Had Thwaites Original, which was OK, and Bombardier on cask. TV's with sports on in every room.
2 Jan 2013 11:31
Nice pint of Brass Monkey Golden Langur. Food was OK, and also has Sky Sports.
2 Jul 2012 10:26
Average pint of Lees Dark. Staff were attentive and the food (Sunday roast) was good though. Has a beer garden.
10 Jun 2012 20:14
Didn't have any problems with service this afternoon, despite the pub being busy. 9 handpumps (1 real cider), at 1.90/2.00 per pint., half from the local Saddleworth Brewery. Quality was good. Food portions looked good too. I'll definitely be back.
10 Jun 2012 20:10
Sadly the silver buckets have gone! Real ale is still inconsistent
7 Jun 2012 00:17
Formerly the Junction and a vast improvement. Friendly and 7 handpumps with beers mostly from microbrewers, from 2.50/pt. The landlady will not reveal the house beer brewery....
7 Jun 2012 00:14
The Fenay Bridge, Fenay Bridge
This restaurant-cum-pub now has 2 handpumps, with Black Sheep Best and Bombardier on. Average quality.
7 Jun 2012 00:08
Only cask ale was Theakstons Best at a hefty 3.25/pt, nowt special.
7 Jun 2012 00:03
Jennings Cocker-Hoop at 1.50/pt special and Morland Original at 1.79 - normal price I'm told. Both fine
7 Jun 2012 00:01
9 handpumps, 2 of which were ciders and 1 perry - all hidden down the far end. Ruddles and Abbot repeated, so just 2 guest ales - Cains Jubilee Mild and Beartown Black Bear, both decent and well priced at 1.79/2.05 - that's dearer than the Imperial though!
6 Jun 2012 23:59
6 real ales, 2.10-2.65/pt. Won't win awards for it's beer or food, but it's OK. Big screen for sports, has Sky and ESPN.
7 May 2012 09:53
The Princess Victoria, Matlock Bath
Nice pub with occasional beer festivals (4 handpumps normally) and a good selection of ciders. Quality excellent, good staff too.
16 Apr 2012 01:38
Inside is stone floors, leather chairs and modern wood tables. Four real ales, all from the Marstons family ('Me Duck' was in good form)
16 Apr 2012 01:35
Real ale range isn't great, but at least they do a couple, Deuchars was OK. Opposite the Academy
16 Apr 2012 01:32
5 cask ales on, from a range of breweries (3 were local). However, they turned off the sound and TV without warning and announced the pub was closing (about 7pm Sunday) without calling last orders?
16 Apr 2012 01:26
Only cask ale was Courage Directors and it was not in good form. Sound on the TV's was a second or so ahead of the action - I think upstairs had 3D coverage.
16 Apr 2012 01:19
Currently has a 'real ale festival' on until May 7th, but that only entailed 3 beers - Lost Dene Bitter (Courage Best); Deuchars IPA and Marstons 'Me Duck', all at 2.50/pt. The latter was good, the Deuchars a little green. Loads of TV's with the football on, but the sound was from the 3D commentary in the back (glasses 2 deposit), and frustratingly 1.5 seconds ahead of the action on most of the TV's. Staff were pretty good.
16 Apr 2012 01:17
Four real ales from independent breweries plus 2 cask ciders. I tried two of the ales (1 good, the other average). The snug is a bit like someone's front room. Aside from there, the tables and chairs are aimed at diners.
14 Mar 2012 00:29
Still the same beers as previously reported, the Black Sheep was a bit disappointing this evening. This pub has Sky Sports.
14 Mar 2012 00:18
4 real ales, 3 of which were local. I tried 2 and both were excellent
14 Mar 2012 00:15
Good range of real ales at decent prices, interesting Wakefield Trinity memorabilia around the walls and a pool table in the back. Staff seemed friendly enough
7 Mar 2012 23:01
The Black Country Arms, Walsall
Excellent beer quality and range. Food was pretty good too, if a little slow to arrive.
4 Mar 2012 13:46
The house bitter is from Theakstons and the one of our group who had it also said insipid. The Golden Delicious was OK, but the Holdens Golden Glow was below par - very disappointing for a current GBG pub. 5 of the 6 ale handpumps were pale beers, plus Abbot.
4 Mar 2012 13:44
Reasonable enoug Wetherspoons, just 4 real ales on though - quality OK
4 Mar 2012 13:40
Now called the Nightingale, and served Doom Bar when I visited last month.
2 Feb 2012 22:05
Last orders at 1045 on a Friday? Several local cask ales, particularly Arundel beers, available and in good form.
11 Jan 2012 01:16
The Earl Of Burlington, Eastbourne
The worst range of cask beer I've seen at a Wetherspoons in a long while - only Marstons, Ruddles and GK on? Quality OK, but the Lloyds bar in Eastbourne had a far better range.
11 Jan 2012 01:13
Nice old style pub, with excellent beer, only disappointing thing was all the cask beers are from the W&D stable
11 Jan 2012 01:04
Average pub but it does do 1 changing cask ale, which was OK.
4 Dec 2011 15:21
Shrubbery Cottage, Stourbridge
Good pint of Holdens Special and shows football on TV screens.
4 Dec 2011 15:15
4 real ales and plenty of belgian beers, though rather aimed at the eating market, at least during the day (all tables with cutlery on and no stools at the bar). The Irwell 3 Bad Shepherds was on good form. In the 2012 GBG.
4 Dec 2011 15:14
Had Bank Top Black Bart and Copper Dragon Best Bitter cask ales yesterday, neither on top form, but friendly enough. Has Sky/ESPN.
4 Dec 2011 15:11
The handpumps are still there but are never used. It was almost empty at 1045 on a Friday evening...
4 Dec 2011 15:03
Cask ale in the form of local brew Titanic White Star, which was OK
10 Oct 2011 19:32
The Rose and Crown, Walthamstow
Bar staff were good, as was quality, though expensive. There were 5 beers on, though I can't believe it's the best range in London, particularly as there were 3 Northern blonde beers on at the same time, plus Hogs Back TEA and West End Bitter - nothing dark at all. What I didn't like is the misleading advertising outside this pub which implies that it was a finalist in the CAMRA pub of the year 2009 and 2010. They clearly know it wasn't as they make the point that they won the 2011 East London pub of the year - in fact they appear just to have been a losing finalist in that competition the 2 years before, a far cry from the national acclaim they purport to.
21 Aug 2011 20:35
The Prince Arthur, Tottenham Hale
Decent place, approach looks a little better when coming from Tottenham Hale station. Good Guinness 2.80 and showing Irish and Sky sports. No real ale. I think the yellow and blue may have come from the Roscommon origins, clearly displayed on a pillar to the right of the bar. But it's not yellow/blue outside any more and appears to have lost a window during the riots unfortunately.
21 Aug 2011 20:20
The Moon and Cross, Waltham Cross
Plus points to the staff, friendly on both bar visits. Two Nethergate beers on, average condition each.
21 Aug 2011 20:03
This pub is alive and well, with 2 guest beers as well as the McMullens AK and Country. Sky Sports still shown, well worth a visit if in the area.
21 Aug 2011 19:56
Welcoming pub with a few tables outside and AK and Country Bitter from McMullens on handpump, quality fine.
21 Aug 2011 19:51
Same two beers as 'fugglehops' enjoyed last time and the Brewers Gold was indeed very tasty. Friendly welcome
21 Aug 2011 19:49
McMullens pub with AK and 'McMullens cask ale' (3.10/pt), quality fine. Sky sports in Bar area...quiote busy on my visit today.
21 Aug 2011 19:44
The Market Tavern, Huddersfield
Closed at the end of last football season. In the last few weeks, the building has been demolished. There is a new pub on the opposite corner, the Yorkshire Rose, yet to appear on here, which is a bit more family orientated.
21 Aug 2011 10:09
This pub is closed and boarded up. However, the next door Station Hotel, in the GBG but does not appear on this site, is well worth a visit for both food & drinks.
31 Jul 2011 22:08
Note the clock is well ahead in here - thought I only ha dtime for a half pre-train when in fact there was time for a pint. You'll have to ask for any top-ups, they don't do so by default. Quality good though.
31 Jul 2011 22:00
Good pint of Landlord (2.75/pt) and a nice beer garden to the rear.
31 Jul 2011 21:56
Last review sounds like it's a relative of the new management. However, it's nicely decorated, with a couple of sofas and a nice bar area. Cask ale is provided in the form of Ossett Yorkshire Blonde, at 1.90/pt and was good. Tables out of the front, it's probably the most handily located pub for Wakefield Wildcats rugby league.
31 Jul 2011 21:53
Can't comment on how this has changed because it's my first visit. Approx 8 real ales, half from the Ossett stable, 1 from Clarks. Tried 2 and both were OK, but nothing special. Long queues at the bar both times (Sunday afternoon). Loads of space in the beer garden and a nice view out the front also. Lovely interior.
31 Jul 2011 21:47
The Bradley Arms, North Featherstone
Traditional but comfortable multi-roomed pub with 3 real ales - Black Sheep Bitter, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin (2.60/pt) and Ringwood Old Thumper on my visit. TV and parking to the rear. Lots of Featherstone Rovers gear and cuttings in the front room.
28 Jul 2011 22:14
Good Stonehouse beers (4) and a range of Belgian bottles also.
19 Jul 2011 23:54
Soulless Wetherspoons, fitting in well with it's surroundings. Beer average.
19 Jul 2011 23:44
I agree with previous comments - good cheap food, friendly, looks like a pub rather than a restaurant even if quite a few eat there. Just lancaster Bomber on cask. Has several TV's.
6 Jun 2011 15:05
The Axe and Cleaver, Dunham Massey
Beer choice Youngs, Deuchars, Bombardier - some local beers would have been better. Quality OK and a lot cheaper than the Rope & Anchor for both beer and food, without compromising on comfort
6 Jun 2011 15:01
The Rope and Anchor, Dunham Massey
Food is good but expensive. There were 2 Dunham beers and a Tatton one on handpump yesterday - can't say I liked the Dunham one, although I've liked their other stuff, but the Tatton one was good (and also expensive).
The pub is virtually unrecognisable from before.
6 Jun 2011 14:59
Sky Sports, good quality Badger beers and the food was very good :-)
10 May 2011 00:25
GK IPA and London Pride cask ale in this Punch Taverns pub. Still has Sky Sports. 4.1 average? It's better than that certainly.
10 May 2011 00:22
Best of the Bayswater Taylor Walker pubs - 2 guest ales (Exmoor Ale and Beartown Ginger Beer). No Sky Sports anymore. More of a locals pub than most in this area.
10 May 2011 00:18
Quite expensive Taylor Walker pub with 3 real ales, London Pride, GK and Landlord. Quality OK.
10 May 2011 00:15
It's part of the Taylor Walker pub chain now, rather than Rat & Parrot. Compared to the other 2 Taylor Walker pubs within the area (the Kings Head is only 100m away), it has a much smaller range of cask beers - both handpumps tonight were Youngs London Gold - unfortunately my choice in the KIngs Head!
10 May 2011 00:11
The Rosehill Tavern, Westhoughton
Nice cask Holts Mild, also has Holts Bitter, TV with sport.
28 Apr 2011 01:41
The Daisy Hill Hotel, Westhoughton
Thwaites pub, 3 cask ales (Nutty Black, Wainwrights and Thwaites Original) - the Nutty Black was OK. Darts and sport on TV's.
28 Apr 2011 01:39
GBG pub with 3 real ales (Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, Magnum PA and a Salamander beer today). Quality very good. Two rooms with a traditional interior inside, plus plenty of room in the beer garden out the front
22 Apr 2011 23:11
Couldn't find the Wheatsheaf, now I know why! 3 Phoenix beers on handpump. I had the honey porter, which didn't really work (not pub's fault) but was a tad warm.
31 Mar 2011 23:09
Both the Purple Moose beer and the Allgates California were excellent. Also had another Allgates, Hydes and a Welsh cask cider. Definite revisit
31 Mar 2011 23:06
The Coach and Horses, Tadcaster
I think this has probably undergone a makeover, as it's gone a bit upmarket. At 2.75/pt, it's expensive for the area, but has a range of real ales - Black Sheep, Copper dragon and had a Taylors pump.
30 Mar 2011 11:28
The Angel and White Horse, Tadcaster
The barman apologised last night for the recent price increase, which now sees a good pint of Old Brewery Bitter at 1.52 in this pleasant multi-roomed GBG pub. There's a fire towards the back.
30 Mar 2011 11:25
6 handpulled beers tonight, 4 from Great Heck plus a Mallinsons and HQ1. A bit unbalanced on selection with 5 of them being pale, quality fine.
26 Mar 2011 00:39
2 Ossett beers (Silver King and Yorkshire Blonde) plus Landlord on the handpumps tonight. Quality OK. Still has Sky
26 Mar 2011 00:36
Now has 4 handpumps - all of which serve Marstons EPA?! It's not the most comfortable place with the tables not suiting the level/distance from the chairs.
16 Mar 2011 11:09
Sorry, pub patron is incorrect. Bluu, yards away, has real ale and it's 30p a pint cheaper there. However, Odd has a changing guest beer and the Mary Rose was good on Saturday.
16 Mar 2011 11:07
Very much open today, 4 real ales in excellent condition, but didn't see any obvious sign of Batley rugby league fans either before or after the game today, though you won't find any other pub between the station and the ground. Has all sports on.
13 Mar 2011 21:04
Multi-roomed traditional GBG pub. Nice Goose Eye guest beer last night, Tetley plus 4 guests and 2 cask ciders.
10 Mar 2011 22:26
The Angler's Retreat, Wintersett
This GBG pub is closed on Tuesdays. It still has Barnsley Bitter (fine) and Sam Smiths Bitter but is not a Sam Smiths pub. The guest last night was Taylors Landlord. The Old English cider is no more, the friendly landlord is undecided what to replace it with. Welcomes dogs, and smells a bit of them.
10 Mar 2011 22:20
Has cask theakstons XB - ok. Not many people in last night, but friendly.
9 Mar 2011 13:12
Friendly bright place with 3 Moorhouses cask beers (Pride of pendle, Blond and Black Cat Mild) - the latter being good.
9 Mar 2011 13:11
Leeds Pale Ale was OK, 2 other cask beers available. This is very much aimed at upmarket diners, seemed to be doing a good trade.
8 Mar 2011 01:16
The first pub I've been in where Songs of Praise has been on the TV on a Sunday afternoon. Bland choice of real ales - I had the Greene King IPA and it was OK
24 Feb 2011 00:21
Chilled pub in a residential area just outside the town centre. Good real ales and friendly
24 Feb 2011 00:18
North Riding Hotel, Scarborough
The brewery here is now open and all beers were very good.
22 Feb 2011 01:02
The Elephant and Castle, Wakefield
Has added Timmy Taylors Landlord - was in good form on Saturday.
10 Feb 2011 23:47
Trof Northern Quarter, Manchester
Agree with pub_patron, this is disappointing compared to other Northern Quarter venues
10 Feb 2011 23:34
A good range of Danish bottled beers - the real ale range tonight was not as good as previous posters have found - initially Landlord and Bombardier but by 8pm just the Bombardier (OK).
10 Feb 2011 23:32
The Sunday roast was excellent, just about the best pub food I've ever had. The Charles Wells IPA was superb also. Only disappointment was the beer range itself - all 6 handpumps were well known beers.
7 Feb 2011 00:28
Skolars Sports Bar, Wood Green
Closed today, even with London Skolars RL playing Widnes just up the road.
7 Feb 2011 00:12
Clean toliets and good service today. For a Wetherspoons, to have only 1 guest beer on is pretty poor, but the quality was good.
7 Feb 2011 00:07
No real ale and hardly anyone in this afternoon, despite having the football on TV.
7 Feb 2011 00:06
The Snifter was half right - the (loud) regulars still block most of the bar - and the staff ignore newcomers to serve regulars who arrive after. Has Sky. Gave up waiting though and took my trade elsewhere.
7 Feb 2011 00:03
One guy working very hard, whilst the rest of the staff could not be bothered. Quality fine (Blindmans Siberia)
6 Feb 2011 23:57
This now appears to be part of a small chain, the 'Sheffield Pub Company'. Food on in evenings - no takers tonight as far as I could see. The quiz night seemed to be still going. Good news on the beer front - now includes a house beer and beers from the Thornbridge brewery. Bad news is the price - 3/pt for the house 3.8% bitter!
18 Jan 2011 23:25
Not far from The Shay, but you need to know where you're going ;-) 4 Taylors beers plus 3 guests on handpump. Well worth the effort.
1 Jan 2011 22:31
Friendly pub with Lees Bitter on cask - there is a mild handpump but not currently in use.
27 Dec 2010 13:49
Already advertising for New Years Eve 2011, it was closed yesterday.
27 Dec 2010 13:43
It's been a long time since I was here and it's been sanitised, removing all the previous character in the process. Still does real ale, but nothing to write home about.
27 Dec 2010 13:40
The Old Packet House, Altrincham
Pleasant and friendly, the Timothy Taylors Golden Best was good but expensive (2.50)
27 Dec 2010 13:36
Marstons Pedigree, Burton Bitter and a guest, Hobgoblin Yo-Ho-Ho (2.45), on draught, the latter being OK. Very much aimed at the food market.
27 Dec 2010 13:34
Very pleasant JW Lees pubs with a central bar with Lees seasonal beers plus regular offerings. The Chocaholic (2.31) was superb. It's bigger than it first looks as there is room to sit the other side of the central bar. Has quiz nights.
27 Dec 2010 13:31
Was very full yesterday with United in the large main bar and City in the side bar. The Deuchars IPA was poor, but the Black Sheep was OK
27 Dec 2010 13:27
Dull choice of real ales - cask john smiths, tetley and bombardier. OK.
18 Nov 2010 01:12
Promising food and Sky soon. Greene King ipa and a slightly murky Leeds Best (as guest) on handpump
18 Nov 2010 01:11
Worthington Winter Shield on my visit - guests are changed every 2-3 weeks. Has Sky
18 Nov 2010 01:09
Previous comment correct re music. Best real ale was Red Lion Bitter (1.40/pt)!
18 Nov 2010 00:37
Robinsons pub with a decent Battering ram and Unicorn on handpump
18 Nov 2010 00:33
Handpumps but nothing on them, in this large open pub near the station
18 Nov 2010 00:31
The Grey Horse Hotel, Wakefield
I had a little better John Smiths Cask than the previous reviewer, but otherwise I concur!
17 Nov 2010 00:16
The Lord of the Manor, New Crofton
An excellent Sam Smiths Old Brewery from the friendly landlady tonight. The closest pint of real ale to the nearby Nostell MW football club.
17 Nov 2010 00:13
Friendly and helpful staff and clientele in this large pub split into lounge and bar sides. No real ale.
17 Nov 2010 00:10
The Angler's Retreat, Wintersett
Got there at 6.40 tonight to find everything closed. A local then told me it opened at 7, but there was still nno sign of life well after that so I moved on. No opening hours are displayed outside.
17 Nov 2010 00:09
Not up to usual Wetherspoons beer standards - just 2 real ales on and the one we had was poor
3 Nov 2010 21:34
Best beer of the day on my visit to Liverpool. Sport on TV, as seems common in the real ale pubs around :-)
3 Nov 2010 21:15
Perhaps not the real ale range of some of the other local GBG entries and the 1st pint was off but changed OK and the 2nd was fine. Food was OK.
3 Nov 2010 21:11
The Goose at the Gardens, Newcastle
One real ale (Marstons EPA), but didn't last long
3 Nov 2010 20:54
great range of beers all in good form. Surprisingly busy Tuesday teatime
3 Nov 2010 20:51
Red Lion ales have now stopped brewing, replacements were not great last week
3 Nov 2010 20:50
The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
Ate here on Sunday and it was decent. Guest beers are now 3.40/pt
13 Oct 2010 23:06
Hmm. Friendly enough pub with 2 permanent real ales (Tetley and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, only the latter on tonight). I wouldn't go as far as the previous poster though!
13 Oct 2010 23:04
Previous descriptions still accurate except there's just Pedigree on handpump these days
14 Sep 2010 22:38
Real ales from the Wolverhampton & Dudley range (Marstons, Jennings etc) in a predominantly food-based pub. Closed Mondays.
23 Aug 2010 23:31
Had real ale in here in May, but has stopped again. Handpumps still there.
23 Aug 2010 23:28
The Coach and Horses Bistro, Honley
Now just a steak house and has removed the handpumps and TV's.
23 Aug 2010 23:27
No longer smoky, but just has Landlord and Tetley on cask nowadays. Quiz Night Thursday.
23 Aug 2010 23:26
Tried to overcharge me and sullen acknowledgement of such afterwards does not leave me with a good impression. Beer was average
21 Aug 2010 22:17
A 'do not miss' when in Northallerton. Probably the best weizen I've ever had (Dr Morton's Milk of Amnesia) - truly memorable ;-). Knowledgable staff and 6 real ales plus a good selection of continentals / bottles. Games available.
21 Aug 2010 22:10
Tickle Toby Inn, Northallerton
3 real ales, Taylors Golden Best, Daleside Blonde (ok) and cask Johns (?). Lots of booths, good for privacy, plus a TV (no Sky)
21 Aug 2010 22:06
now has a tv and 4 handpumps - Black Sheep Best, deuchars, cask Johns and the guest Adnams Braodside (average condition). Friendly enough but there's better beer elsewhere.
21 Aug 2010 21:38
Has dropped the John Smiths and Bass and has Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, which was good.
16 Aug 2010 23:09
Range of real ales reduced (Black Sheep Best and Taylors Golden Best only) and soft drinks are very expensive (2.15 for a lemonade!) Quality OK though
16 Aug 2010 23:05
The White Horse, Jackson Bridge
Best pint of the day on Sunday, a Mars Magic from Wold Top :-)
16 Aug 2010 22:59
Old Speckled Hen, Tetley and an excellent Abbot Ale on cask in this split-level 2 roomed pub. Sunday lunches were popular in the front lounge bar.
16 Aug 2010 22:50
Has now added a handpump (Leeds Best) but not the beer yet (23/7)
8 Aug 2010 23:38
Now closed and all pub signs have been removed - looks like it's being converted to flats.
5 Jul 2010 19:04
The Shoulder of Mutton, Castleford
Friendly 2 roomed pub with 2 changing guest ales. The Derwent Brewery 'Summer Rose' was in excellent condition. Well priced, worth the short walk out of town. On the 189 bus route to/from Leeds.
5 Jul 2010 19:02
Beer range and quality were good and staff were attentive. Short measuring pints seems de rigeur though.
5 Jul 2010 18:59
looks closed - if you don't open when there are 6000 people at a rugby league game a few hundred metres away, when do you?
5 Jul 2010 18:57
Two roomed local with TV's. Cask John Smiths plus a guest (Banks Bitter), which was in excellent form. Very expensive for the area though (2.65/pt).
5 Jul 2010 18:55
The closest pub to Castleford Tigers RL ground. No real ale - the same applies to The Garden House and Early Bath, also on the way to the ground from the town.
5 Jul 2010 18:54
A change of ownership and opening times have increased aswell as the range of real ales. The Mallinsons Bitter (local) was very nice.
2 Jul 2010 18:20
Good range of independent real ales and a TV for the World Cup in 1 of the 4 rooms. Also has a beer garden
17 Jun 2010 09:38
Now 2.10 a pint, but still serves cask Johns and advertises Sky Sports. The Royal Swan a few doors down has neither and blasts the music at deafening levels.
13 Jun 2010 22:44
has detiorated over the last 5 years and is now pretty run down. Does not have real ale any more.
13 Jun 2010 22:42
popped in a few months back and was surprised to find a real ale on, which was OK. Is primarily a music bar
13 Jun 2010 22:40
This is much improved, much lighter than previously. A choice of relatively uninspiring real ales and food (says all day, but all the menus were removed at 7)? Sports screens at the back
12 May 2010 00:34
Were a bit short of barstaff on Saturday lunchtime, but beer was good
12 May 2010 00:30
I wouldn't quite as far as the previous comments, but it's definitely the best pub near Cheadle Town FC (the others being 2 Robinsons pubs not registered, Queens Arms and Printers Arms (keg only)). On my visit, 3 Robinsons real ales - Mild, Bitter and Dizzy Blonde - in decent form. Food seems to be available evenings too and the carvery does sound good (12-6 Sunday, 6.95).
12 May 2010 00:02
Three real ales (Landlord, Cumberland, Boddies). Bit expensive but OK.
7 May 2010 23:14
The George and Dragon, Altrincham
'Table table' pub/restaurant - no real ales last Monday, but I believe they normally do
7 May 2010 23:09
The Star and Garter, Manchester
Sadly, Smile has also declined in quality. Beer not very good, but there is a pool table.
7 May 2010 23:06
2 Storm Breweries beers on cask in decent form - a welcome alternative where Robinsons dominate the market.
7 May 2010 22:54
Had cask Robinson's Hatters Mild and Unicorn Bitter, but quality was below average.
7 May 2010 22:52
Closest pub to New Mills Central station, but has no real ales - the Royal Oak (Robinsons, not registered on here) just up the road does though and is recommended
7 May 2010 22:47
Advertises cask ales on the signs outside but does not do them anymore :-(
7 May 2010 22:45
Richard John Blackler, Liverpool
Good Friday must have the Saturday beer menu - choice and quality were good on my visit
4 Apr 2010 00:40
Have to agree with previous comments that this has gone downhill and is now unreliable on quality. However, as pablos12 commented last year, it is generally a nice pub, seems to avoid idiots and obviously seems to be the place to see Manchester United lose, as I did today, alas.
4 Apr 2010 00:33
A once cracking pub now is as run of the mill as the other pubs in the area. No real ales, though at least the handpumps are still there, should someone else come in
4 Apr 2010 00:25
The Greyhound Inn, Attercliffe
Closed today after a game at the Don Valley, if they don't open then, when do they open? Does appear to have signs of life though, where many of the pubs in the area do not.
4 Apr 2010 00:23
a 'table table' restaurant with a bar - 2 real ales (Hobgoblin and Black Sheep Bitter 2.50/pt), the only one in the area to do so. Sky Sports News but not Sky Sports.
4 Apr 2010 00:18
has a nice beer garden (albeit surrounded by factories and a main road), but no real ale
4 Apr 2010 00:16
Haven't had the beer quality problems other have mentioned. However, when matches are rearranged, they don't seem to find out and therefore don't prepare for them. However, they made a great effort on Saturday when they did find out.
14 Mar 2010 19:50
they have now removed the only handpump they had. What a waste.
14 Mar 2010 19:47
The Grey Horse Hotel, Accrington
This is now a Thwaites pub - with 3 Thwaites real ales (Nutty Black, Wainwrights and I think it was Lancaster Bomber) - the Nutty Black was good. Whilst it was cleaner than the previous post suggested, it's pretty basic interior wise.
27 Jan 2010 23:42
No handpumps at all anymore - real ale drinkers should try the Grey Horse when visiting Accrington Stanley.
27 Jan 2010 23:36
Has 1 real ale - Abbot, which is expensive and was average. It's main feature is that opens earlier than the rest of the pubs in the village.
27 Jan 2010 23:30
The first pub you come to from the railway station. Has 3 guest ales - the Ringwood Porter was exceptional! The landlord made us very welcome too - a definite to revisit
27 Jan 2010 23:28
Real ale range was a little disappointing - Tetley, Ind Coope Burton Ale and Black Sheep - quality OK.
27 Jan 2010 23:26
this used to be one of my favourites, but not a single ale on the other week - sadly in common with most Camden pubs, it seems!
19 Jan 2010 12:31
The Haverstock Arms, Belsize Park
Beer (3 ales) were excellent, and better priced for the area than most (2.80/pt). Multiple screens for sport. I'll be back next time I'm in the area.
19 Jan 2010 12:26
Not very good pint of Young's Kew Gold, but people seemed to be enjoying themselves
19 Jan 2010 12:20
Whilst it's comfortable, my visit the other day didn't support the previously glowing reviews. One ale on, Bombardier, in average condition
19 Jan 2010 12:19
The Sweet Green Tavern, Bolton
Excellent Hop Star Winter Ale - all ales 2.40. TV's (no Sky)
7 Jan 2010 21:16
Good Hydes real ales and sport on big screen (2.20 for bitter). Friendly locals.
7 Jan 2010 21:09
Multi-roomed pub next to Staybridge Celtic FC. Black Sheep Bitter and Robbies on draught. TV (no Sky)
7 Jan 2010 21:06
Just Old Speckled Hen on cask on Wednesday but was OK. Newspapers available
27 Nov 2009 00:47
Cask Greene King IPA and Old Speckled Hen always on - never seen a 3rd cask ale on? Quality is not great. Still has Sky and now has ESPN, and refurb is an improvement.
22 Nov 2009 20:55
Now has cask Marstons Pedigree in the downstairs bar (only), in decent form. Same menu as the Headingley Taps - looks like both are owned by the same company.
22 Nov 2009 20:40
The Headingley Taps, Headingley
Wanted to order a Sunday dinner with drink, but they will not include any cask ale in the offer, despite cask Tetley being cheaper than most of the other drinks which are included. The menu doesn't say it is limited to Smooth, but the barstaff, who were slow aswell, insist it does. Tetley is cheap but better at the supporters club at the Stadium.
22 Nov 2009 20:34
Arcadia Ale and Wine Bar, Headingley
Great beer, also does food. Only problem today was they were short of bar staff, so long queues at the bar.
22 Nov 2009 20:28
Seems to have relaxed it's non-diners policy a little - though some of our group had eaten there earlier. Had an OK Old Speckled Hen.
10 Nov 2009 00:12
A welcome improvement on my previosu visit - much cleaner since the smoking ban and comfortably refurbished. Now has Copper Dragon Black Gold on handpull, plus 2 others on Tuesday. Busy for 5pm too
30 Oct 2009 14:14
Owned by Boggarts brewery, it always has 1 of their real ales. They boast never to have repeated any others...Kuppers Kolsch on draught for lager; and a real cider on handpull too.
30 Oct 2009 13:15
Oddfellows Arms, Ashton under Lyne
Decent food, friendly service, beer was superb and sport on the TV. :-)
18 Oct 2009 19:13
The Ash Tree, Ashton Under Lyne
Guest ales 1.75 yesterday and fine, as was the food and the service. May not be the best Wetherspoons going, but competition is pretty poor in Ashton....
18 Oct 2009 19:11
Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchester
Has stopped selling real ale and removed the handpumps :-(
17 Oct 2009 13:09
Be warned - Last orders have been called at 9.30pm on my last 2 visits!
10 Oct 2009 09:46
The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
Good beer range - guests were Robinsons Wags to Wiches (3.10) and Holts Bitter (3.25!!!) Also a weissbier and Continental lagers. Much more down to earth than the marquis
9 Oct 2009 18:27
Marquis of Cornwallis, Bloomsbury
Would agree with rob372 re the crowd. Just 2 ales on as I write, but have a guest real cider. Two draught weissbiers and a good bottle selection make this pleasant enough
9 Oct 2009 17:32
The Friend at Hand, Bloomsbury
Staff were fine today, youngs bitter and speckled hen on (bombardier conditioning). Has espn and sky. Nowt special tho'
9 Oct 2009 17:13
Tetleys, Boamardier and adnams broadside on handpump but a bit expensive (2.80). Espn and outside table
12 Sep 2009 13:33
The Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal
apparently there is an upstairs bar with real ale. However, I asked at the downstairs bar for cask ale and they never mentioned it. Grrrrr!
9 Sep 2009 11:37
Wasn't open on my previous visit, but was this time. Multi-roomed pub aimed at the food market. Did real ales though and they were OK.
9 Sep 2009 09:39
Actually the Hartleys XB and Cumbrian Way (2.60 each) were pretty good. Barstaff were friendly. Rating revised upwards.
9 Sep 2009 09:37
Has a tiny beer garden outside. Cask ale OK (Hawkshead Yewdale Bitter)
9 Sep 2009 09:34
Stuck in a timewarp, but at least has a pool table and 2 real ales (Jennings Bitter and Marstons Long Hop on my visit)
9 Sep 2009 09:28
Seems to be (re)named the Duke of Clarence, but still closed and available for let.
31 Aug 2009 01:11
Previously an ale free establishment, this now has Greene King IPA (2.10) and Old Speckled Hen (2.35). Has Sky / ESPN. However, short measuring is de rigeur and the landlady attempted to overcharge myself and another punter.
31 Aug 2009 01:09
and the restaurant is now closed and boarded up, with a sign advertising this as a pub again.....
31 Aug 2009 01:04
Has improved it's range of real ales - Landlord (2), London Pride (1.75) and I think Bombardier (1.93?). The landlord (and the service of it) was good.
31 Aug 2009 00:25
The Albert Hotel, Huddersfield
Never open when I pass, it seems (closed again this afternoon) though clearly ther are signs of life.
31 Aug 2009 00:20
I agree with tyson. No real ale (though still has a handpump) but has Sky
29 Aug 2009 17:23
Same beers (good) and the food is very nice, but the portions are smaller than they used to be.
25 Aug 2009 13:50
Just 4 real ales on this Saturday, Batemans XB & Miss Australia, Landlord and Sharps Stogies. Good quality though and a huge beer garden.
24 Aug 2009 11:45
Still an amiable and helpful landlord, nice beer and still a bit expensive - cheapest was Everards Beacon at 2.85/pt.
24 Aug 2009 11:41
The Betjeman Arms, St Pancras International Station
I was charged 3.00 for a Sharps Betjeman on Saturday! How ugly must I be , if steve2905's premise is followed!
10 Aug 2009 12:18
The Central Bar, Shepherds Bush
I think previous comments are harsh - beer (York Guzzler)and food good tonight, clean, plus there is the feature in the back corner of books you can read whilst there... For the non-shoppers, 'West12' is opposite the tube station and should not be confused by the 'Westfield' shopping centre.next to the tube! Seemed a good Wspoons to me
30 Jul 2009 21:37
The Defector's Weld, Shepherds Bush
No real ale and loud, crap music blasting out earlier tonight
30 Jul 2009 21:28
The Old Parrs Head, Kensington
Real ale OK but 74p more expensive compared to the beaconsfield for a same strength beer and not the range of the havelock
29 Jul 2009 22:03
Now serving just one real ale, Youngs Special, permanently, but give me that in good condition (which is what it was) anyday over two sh*te beers. At 2.66pt for a 4.5% beer, it's good value for the area. Friendly barstaff.
29 Jul 2009 21:55
The Havelock Tavern, Kensington
Twickenham grandstand bitter was top notch, Sambrook Wandle cask ale OK too and does London Pride too. I like this pub nmore than it's neighbours
29 Jul 2009 21:27
Would echo the previous comment - staff were friendly and helpful and pride was fine.
29 Jul 2009 20:08
The Windsor Castle, Kensington
Food was pretty decent on Sunday (nothing special though), beer OK too
28 Jul 2009 23:50
Most expensive pint of Greene King IPA I've ever had.No desire to revisit
28 Jul 2009 22:15
I doubled the number of customers when I entered this shopfront pub tonight. Barman was quick to respond but they have no handpumps.
28 Jul 2009 21:55
Bomardier cask ale, which was OK. Not enough staff serving though! Has Sky Sports
28 Jul 2009 19:06
The Cumberland Arms, West Kensington
Overrated - decent beer but expensive and in a poncey atmosphere
26 Jul 2009 22:53
The Live and Let Live, West Kensington
Looked good from the outside, advertising Greene King IPA for 1.99 but they don't even have it :-( No real ales at all.
26 Jul 2009 22:48
The Hand and Flower, Kensington
Was quiet and unobtrusive on a Sunday afternoon. 2.80 for a bitter is decent for the area (choice of 3 real ales, nothing exciting though). Better than I expected
26 Jul 2009 22:42
No.88 Bar and Grill, Kingston Upon Thames
The previous time I visited there was a choice of real ales and it was busy. Yesterday, no real ales and dead. The sullen and lazy barman did not help
26 Jul 2009 16:29
Kingsmeadow, Kingston upon Thames
Nice drop of Kew Gold yesterday. The Back bar does not have any handpumps but the bar staff will get it from the other side when the main bar is shut
26 Jul 2009 15:48
The Robert Peel, Kingston Upon Thames
Adnams was good and Spitfire was on offer. Hosts a large flying ant population by the Cambridge road door, which makes sitting outside less pleasant.
26 Jul 2009 15:44
Not the most welcoming pub, but it does still have real ale. The Brunswick is worth the extra 100m walk though.
22 Jul 2009 00:23
Courage Best handpump but not in use tonight>Advertises Sky Sports
21 Jul 2009 01:37
Closed and boarded up, and unlikely to reopen, I suspect. The nearby Fleece Inn on the same road is in a similar state.
20 Jul 2009 18:53
The Hare and Hounds Inn, Mirfield
Nice remote pub with choice of 3 real ales, in OK condition and whilst not cheap, not overpriced
20 Jul 2009 18:10
Reopened about 18 months ago. Now non-Thwaites; with Copper dragon, Landlord, Tetley and a guest (Caledonian XPA last Saturday). Ale was good, does Sunday lunches again (5.95)
27 Jun 2009 11:45
Formerly 'Lounge 68', you can still see that name in some of the fittings. A handpump has been added, though the quality of the John Smiths cask served was poor. A replacement drink was courteously offered though. Has a restaurant at the back.
25 Jun 2009 16:41
Nicely renovated and reopen as an alehouse - approximately 8 handpumps (Taylors Landlord, 2 Golcar beers, an Empire one, and 4 guests) plus Continental lagers both on draught and in bottles. The Sky Sports has gone but it's better for the changes IMO.
15 Jun 2009 21:52
The Quayside Pub, Manchester Airport
This bar is no longer there, having fallen victim to a general move of all shops to be airside. However, in May 2009 a new airside T2 Departures pub has opened called The Observatory. Looks quite snazzy but has real ales on (Hobgoblin & Pedigree)
13 Jun 2009 22:44
GBG regular pub with an excellent real ale choice. Basic and friendly
13 Jun 2009 22:39
Unenterprising real ale choice (Tetley and John Smiths) - only worth a visit when waiting for a train
13 Jun 2009 22:32
It's claim to fame is being where Jimi Hendrix stayed when playing in Ilkley many moons ago. The house beer, from Moorhouses is duly called 'Jimi's' and is OK. These days, Hendrix does not get much of a play in the music front, which is played LOUD. Not sure I'd like that as a resident in the accommodation above / to the side.
13 Jun 2009 22:30
A truly special pub. Spacious and friendly, 6 real ales, in tip-top condition, and at very good prices. Also has Sky & Setanta on big screens. My top discovery in the last year! Do not miss if you are Ilkeston; and sidetrack to it if you are close by.
13 Jun 2009 22:26
Just over the road from the train station, has a couple of OK real ales and Sky / Setanta sports on screens.
13 Jun 2009 22:20
Aptly named warm and friendly pub as you come down from the Helvellyn range into Glenridding. Decent Jennings Cumberland Ale.
25 May 2009 13:34
Believe there has been a change of landlord earlier this year... There was only a poor and expensive Jennings Cumberland cask ale on today.
18 May 2009 23:38
Had to take my Old Speckled Hen back but it was changed for an Everards Sly Fox without fuss. However, the manager said he was fed up with throwing ale out and said this could well be the last ale he puts on there. :(
18 May 2009 23:36
No real ales, it has taken 3 months to get this registered, so don't have any more details, sorry.
16 May 2009 16:25
Hare and Hounds, Ashton under Lyne
No real ales, it has taken 3 months to get this registered, so don't remember any more details, sorry.
16 May 2009 16:24
Oddfellows Arms, Ashton under Lyne
Very nice multi-roomed Robinsons pub, good real ales, but expensive for the area
16 May 2009 16:22
Now has Copper Dragon IPA instead of Black Sheep and SuperSport. Beer is excellent and wel priced (2/pt).
16 May 2009 16:19
No ales, but has Norwegian sport channels and is pretty cheap
16 May 2009 16:17
Couple of ales on, may not be a patch on the nearby Eagle, but still very welcome when you are waiting for a train
16 May 2009 16:16
Now 3 Thwaites cask ales (Wainwright was excellent|) and also has Sky/Setanta
16 May 2009 16:07
another good night in there, real ales spot on, friendly people and Sky Sports. I can't hink of a better east London pub....
16 May 2009 16:02
The Lord Nelson, Holloway Road
No real ales here, so moved on. Was totally empty around 6pm on a Friday, but staff friendly enough
16 May 2009 15:45
The Famous Cock Tavern, Islington
Green King IPA, Youngs Bitter and Fullers Pride, but a tad expensive.
16 May 2009 15:41
French Horn is a little further north.
Still 3.40 for a London Pride on May 3rd!
16 May 2009 12:21
One of the best pubs I've been in this year. Friendly, great beer range and quality and Sky Sports.
16 May 2009 12:01
3 real ales, including a local Saltaire one in decent condition
16 May 2009 11:58
Customer service and a good range of real ales, but would certainly agree about overpriced food.
16 May 2009 11:53
No real ale on today, but otherwise as described by others before.
1 May 2009 16:18
Metro Bar and Canteen, Holloway
No real ale - in fact there is no draught bitter of any kind...
1 May 2009 16:07
More aimed at the food market, but does a couple of real ales.
31 Mar 2009 14:21
The Little Bridge, Slaithwaite
More of a wine bar, but has a selection of Continental beers .
31 Mar 2009 14:20
Beer quality has been a problem in the past, but was fine last visit. Usually 2 changing real ales.
31 Mar 2009 14:19
No real ale here, though it still had handpumps last time.
31 Mar 2009 14:18
The Wharf Side Inn, Slaithwaite
No longer does food, but the beer is still excellent.
31 Mar 2009 14:17
Two-roomed local with good real ales and Sky Sports, not that common a combination.
31 Mar 2009 14:16
Cracking back street boozer very close to the canal just out of town. Popular with Huddersfield rugby club, but also divers! Tetley Bitter and Mild on handpump, always on good form.
31 Mar 2009 14:14
The Countryman Pub and Dining, Kirkby in Ashfield
Tow-roomed pub with a range of real ales and Setanta Sports on TV's
31 Mar 2009 14:08
2 roomed local with a cosy snug. Black Sheep on in my visit (October 2008)
27 Mar 2009 11:22
Has real ales on but the music was so loud, I didn't even get inside the door before turning back (Mar 7, 7.30pm).
18 Mar 2009 13:41
Sadly seem to have stopped bothering with the Jennings on my last few tries. Had also run out of 2 of the 3 lagers too on my last visit.
18 Mar 2009 13:34
Hand pulled Stones was OK, I'm sure it was keg only when I was last there so a welcome improvement
10 Mar 2009 12:09
closed when I visited on Sunday evening. Shame, given the previous reviews
10 Mar 2009 12:06
OK beer and has Sky & Setanta. Good bit more expensive than the Wetherspoons over the road though!
10 Mar 2009 11:52
Service terminally slow, but the beer is still OK and has Sky Sports
3 Mar 2009 22:29
Has added 2 real ale pumps with OK Bombardier and Green King IPA. However, the till price for Bombardier was higher than the displayed price list. Tut, tut....
3 Mar 2009 22:19
The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston
3.70 for a lager, 3-3.30 for real ales. Much cheaper in the Sun Inn (including for Coniston Brewery's own beer!).
3 Mar 2009 22:15
Friendly, good ale (Landlord / Hobgoblin) at an OK price. Good size food portions. Accommodation decent I am told too. Didn't see any of the clientele referred to by 'Nomadic1'...
3 Mar 2009 22:00
OK Theakstons Best cask ale. Internal decor betrays a Beatles obsession.
12 Feb 2009 11:48
Beer prices still similar to anywhere else in Nantwich (ie expensive). Had a couple of guest ales, very genteel, but also has TV screens
12 Feb 2009 11:45
Excellent Hydes seasonal ale 'Finders Keepers'. Unusually for Hydes pubs, also has a guest (Abbot Ale / various Allgates brews).
12 Feb 2009 11:42
Great range of good quality real ales very close to the station. Also has real cider
11 Jan 2009 19:43
Range of beer was limited than most Wetherspoons and the service was just about the slowest I have encountered in one...
11 Jan 2009 19:42
Batemans pub with 3 Batemans real ales, Sky Sports and a homely fire. Busy when Boston have home games..
11 Jan 2009 19:40
also has sports on TV and a pool table. Found it to be friendly and the real ale good.
4 Jan 2009 14:30
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem, Nottingham
Decent range of real ale including a mild, but expensive (as you might expect)and the staff need to learn how to pour a decent pint
4 Jan 2009 14:25
Via Bar and Restaurant, Nottingham
No real ale but the service was friendly and helpful
4 Jan 2009 14:21
This place has reopened as Melodies Karaoke bar. It did have an incarnation as 'Livvys' before with some Belgian beer, but didn't see here any here now. No real ale
28 Dec 2008 15:41
Copper Dragon Challenger IPA was OK yesterday (Bass and Orange Pippin were on too).
28 Dec 2008 15:35
No real ale on my visit yesterday (would have liked a decent pint of Landlord too!)
11 Dec 2008 16:45
The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield
Bit of a rabbit warren rooms wise, with 5 real ales on (2 Coach House specials, Tetley, Cumberland and Bombardier (I think)). Quality was good and a nice atmosphere.
11 Dec 2008 16:44
Decent range of Lees beers (2 bitters, the Dark and Moonraker) at the most expensive prices I've ever seen for a Lees pub. Quality OK though.
11 Dec 2008 16:41
The Peveril Of The Peak, Castlefield
I've heard rumours there has been a change of owner, but the beer quality was decent last night (Copper dragon). Pricey though.
11 Dec 2008 16:38
What a change. This is now a pleasant pub, friendly people in at 10pm Saturday. Certainly not smart, but a big improvement. Copper Dragon Golden Pippin at 2/pt, excellent!
7 Dec 2008 23:26
Has now added a good pint of Black Sheep Bitter and frequent bands. Why did they have to wait until I moved the other side of town?
7 Dec 2008 23:22
The Ainley Top (Brewers Fayre), Ainley Top
Now renamed Toby Pub & carvery, but still no real ales. No staff behind the bar during my short stay, I think they were all looking after the restaurant...
7 Dec 2008 23:20
Four real ales, in good condition but not all of which were well served. But pleasant enough.
7 Dec 2008 23:09
Closed and securely boarded up, does not look like opening again soon. Rating withdrawn
24 Nov 2008 00:09
This pub is now much improved, 300% in my rating. It still has no real ales, but its position as Huddersfield's worst dive no longer applies. Now seems to have a bit of a 50s fetish, there seemed to be preparations for a band and more people in today than I have seen in total on previous visits.
23 Nov 2008 23:58
? Can't see kingster's comment relating to this pub? It is a community local, now has Thwaites Original as the cask ale instead but little else has changed, still bright and friendly.
23 Nov 2008 23:24
The Wharf Side Inn, Slaithwaite
don't see why why this pub would need a face lift? Well run and popular pub, good quality cask ales.
23 Nov 2008 23:20
The Shoulder of Mutton Inn, Slaithwaite
Expensive for Slaithwaite (2.40/pt), the range of cask ales has diminished to only Black Sheep Bitter. Now has Sky Sports. Has 4 rooms, some with comfortable chairs and has a pool table.
23 Nov 2008 23:17
The Commercial Hotel, Slaithwaite
Alas, new landlord, no real ales. No Sky Sports any more either.
23 Nov 2008 23:12
Real ales in good condition today too. The staff served quickly and even smiled! Food service was busy.
16 Nov 2008 23:11
Good choice of ale (Youngs Bitter, Special, Winter Warmer & St Austell Tribute) on excellent form. Food is not great value though.
16 Nov 2008 23:07
I think this small boozer is my favourite Richmond pub, Good Youngs beers.
16 Nov 2008 22:56
Beer was fine. The food wasn't great, but is reasonably priced for the area. Has Sky Sports (and Setanta)
16 Nov 2008 22:54
Unusual choice of Fullers real ales - London Pride, Porter and ESB, so no weaker beers? Mine was served in a hot glass.
16 Nov 2008 22:47
Quite a number of the pictures on the walls seem to have been removed, so maybe a refurb coming or has recentl changed hands? Three real ales on, had a decent pint of Landlord, pretty quiet for a Saturday.
2 Nov 2008 21:15
This seems to have improved since the last review. Can't comment on food, but the beer was OK and whilst not every pump was in use, there were at least 6 real ales on. Toilets not up to usual Wetherspoon standards though.
2 Nov 2008 21:09
No Nottingham Ale anymore. Has a Pedigree handpump, but none available on Saturday. Decor has not changed!
2 Nov 2008 21:05
Execllent quality beer in this pub on platform 1. Occasional beer festivals
2 Nov 2008 21:03
3 pint of Landlord, the most expensive beer of the weekend. This side of the river was almost universally more expensive than the other?
30 Oct 2008 16:33
Ales have got more adventurous - Black Sheep Bitter and a guest, has Sky and Setanta.
30 Oct 2008 16:28
No Old Speckled Hen on draught last weekend, just Tetley. Has sports on the big screen though.
30 Oct 2008 16:25
beer quality good; and prices do not seem to have risen as much here as some other places
25 Oct 2008 00:15
The English Lounge, Manchester
Very expensive cask beer, but the quality was OK. There are plenty of much better pubs around though.
23 Oct 2008 13:39
The Barnsley Oak, South Elmsall
Two-roomed friendly pub up the hill from South Elmsall station. In the Good Beer Guide 2009, but it must be for good beer quality than anything about the cask ale range, which was John Smith's and (for part of the night) Black Sheep Best (it's replacement, Boddies, was not ready). Food is nice and good value though.
23 Oct 2008 13:37
We were not allowed in Saturday evening, even just for a beer, as we had not booked a table. There was plenty of standing room available.....
Surely time to call this just a restaurant.
23 Oct 2008 13:25
The Faulkners Arms, Altrincham
I think the 'half decent staff' comment below actually means half the staff are decent, the other half don't know what they're doing behind a bar. Ruddles County real ale, loud music
23 Oct 2008 13:22
Home to a pool team, this is a local type pub in the town centre. Three real ales, a bit overpriced.
17 Oct 2008 22:27
Samuel Smiths pub with slightly too cold Bitter and friendly clientele.
17 Oct 2008 22:23
Cask John Smiths, poor service. Only thing going for it is its proximity to the bus station.
17 Oct 2008 22:20
Country pub with beer garden, multiple rooms and a restaurant with good food. Three real ales - taylor's lanflord, best and tetleys.
27 Sep 2008 01:31
Very handy for Ossett cricket club and Ossett Albion FC. The beer quality and range is good
27 Sep 2008 00:52
The Horse and Jockey Inn, Ossett
Real ale slightly too cold, but you can't fault Sam Smiths prices!
27 Sep 2008 00:50
The Old Nag's Head, Manchester
Had 2 real ales (Theakstons Best and Old Speckled Hen), which were OK
22 Sep 2008 00:09
Super beer as always and the largest chips I've ever seen. Brewery tours available on request. My vote for pub of the year.
19 Sep 2008 22:03
The Bulls Head And Lodge, Hale Barns
Usually has a guest ale ('Dizzy Blonde' on my last 2 visits) and the food is pretty good. Has Sky Sports
19 Sep 2008 21:44
Multi-roomed chain pub-restaurant with OK real ales and a big screen with Sky Sports
8 Sep 2008 23:03
3 real ales, 1 of which is a guest, good quality. Also has Sky and Setanta sports channels. As others have said, friendly
24 Aug 2008 14:25
No real ales, no interesting lagers. In contrast to a previous reviewer, this is one of the worst station bars I've been in - far better ones are at Stalybridge, Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Bridlington, even Kings Cross and Euston. Not suitable for disabled visitors
23 Aug 2008 00:10
Friendly, cosy local Robinsons pub with Hatters Mild and Unicorn Bitter.
20 Aug 2008 22:52
Dog and Partridge, Stalybridge
Belgian beers, Sky TV and tapas on Saturday nights. Apparently the pub was closed for a while and is now owned by locals.
20 Aug 2008 22:48
Great location (you see the pub from the M62 at it's most scenic point, heading eastwards between junction 22 and 23). No real ales.
20 Aug 2008 22:43
More a restaurant but serves beers too and has Old Bore Bitter from Eastwood Brewery. Beer garden to front.
20 Aug 2008 22:41
Two roomed friendly local with real ales (Everards Tiger on 19/8).
20 Aug 2008 22:26
The locals turn, stare, and then talk to you :)
Still no real ale though
3 Aug 2008 20:52
Fortunately we did not see the landlord's son! This is a Robinson's pub, with Unicorn Bitter cask ale (served a bit cold). Food and staff good.
3 Aug 2008 20:46
Now have 15 ales on draught but quality is still good. Also have approx 40 Belgian beers in bottles, around 100 bottled German beers and many other countries including Albania and Mongolia!
3 Aug 2008 20:41
Also has a TV and Sky sports, cask ales usually include some from local breweries (Eastwood / Copper Dragon)
16 Jul 2008 14:01
The Student Union Bar is open to the public but you get a discount with a student card. It has 2 real ales which change, though the Ossett Silver King has been in a while now. It has a cavernous interior with many screens and has Sky. Often has events.
28 May 2008 14:13
Quiet pub heading towards Castle Hill from Newsome village. Seems to have been a while since it was last done up, but the cask beer is good (Thwaites Bitter) and there are newspapers and a TV (no Sky).
28 May 2008 14:07
Multi-roomed local with a fire. Has Sky (no Setanta) and 2 real ales (Black Sheep and Lees Bitter). Quite friendly, allows kids in during the day.
28 May 2008 14:03
Serves 4 cask beers (Old Mill Bitter plus 3 guests). Pool, darts and Sky sports (small screen only). Nice pub with nice people in it!
26 May 2008 20:55
Has cask Tetley and Jennings Cumberland (which was good); and a nice rockery beer garden to the rear. Does food too. Had to ask for my beer to be topped up when it clearly required it, but when I asked it was genially done!
26 May 2008 20:52
Lloyds No 1 bar with Wetherspoons standard beer and food. Beer quality was good, service OK too.
14 May 2008 21:16
Whilst there are many pubs that are much bigger when you get in them than they appear from the outside, this is the opposite - you wonder where all the space has gone. Traditional interior, but no real ale.
14 May 2008 21:13
Sky sports (and Setanta), big screens, Boddies real ale was OK. Does sandwiches.
14 May 2008 21:09
Lancs and Yorks, Bamber Bridge
This is actually the closest pub to Bamber Bridge station. Sky but no real ale
14 May 2008 21:07
Ye Olde Original Withy Tree, Bamber Bridge
Good Robinsons pub with real ale and Sky sports. Multi-roomed, friendly.
14 May 2008 21:04
Nowt special, but far from the worst station pub around. Usually 2 real ales, last time I had Davenports (2.16/pt). Not the quickest bar staff
14 May 2008 20:58
Does Sunday roasts now, but sadly has removed the real ale pump
14 May 2008 20:39
Family pub? Barstaff were fine, but the rest of clientele were hardly friendly. Mind you, it was Chelsea and Manchester United on Sky, and there were Leeds stickers up around the pub....
No real ale
27 Apr 2008 22:59
Not as friendly as the Bodega, and a bit more expensive, but OK.
25 Apr 2008 22:53
Cracking pub, great ales (6 on handpull), good staff and has Sky and Setanta
25 Apr 2008 22:49
As well as super real ales, this pub also has Sky and does Sunday roasts until 3pm!
19 Apr 2008 00:34
The Prince Of Orange, Ashton Under Lyne
4th visit, 4th time karaoke has been on, wondering if it ever stops here? Robbies Unicorn bitter is OK.
19 Apr 2008 00:29
3 real ales with a changing range. Seemed tidy enough to me.
19 Apr 2008 00:25
Food was decent and filling, good selection of real ales and has Sky
19 Apr 2008 00:19
sadly the prices here are well above most Holts pubs now and certainly well above the Wetherspoons next door and there have been quality issues recently. Food is OK
19 Apr 2008 00:17
agree with terrylunn - this is a busy, but reasonable Wetherspoons
19 Apr 2008 00:15
now has 3 real ales - Bombardier, Boddies, Tetley. Has Sky and the food is good value.
18 Apr 2008 23:39
Shepherds Rest, Sowerby Bridge
Ossett brewery pub with good beer, friendly atmosphere and comfy chairs
30 Mar 2008 22:50
Poor pint of Black Sheep today and is a bit pretentious
30 Mar 2008 22:43
The Radcliffe Arms, Almondbury
Jennings Cumberland has replaced the Burtonwood, but otherwise much the same.
30 Mar 2008 22:35
Legendary for massive food portions, now has real ale too. TV with Setanta Sports.
24 Mar 2008 22:59
Sunday lunches good value and quality, but may require pre-booking - strange for the nearest pub to the station! Real ale (guests) good but expensive
24 Mar 2008 22:52
Completely unrecognisable from how it looked 15 years ago. Sky and Theakstons real ales, helpful barstaff
24 Mar 2008 22:49
The Jailhouse is certainly an appropriate name for this unfriendly pub, with a clientele that appear as if they might just be out of the clink themselves. Has TV's (and apparently Sky sports) but no real ale. Go elsewhere
24 Mar 2008 22:18
Pub location is correct, it is the station that must be in the wrong location.
On the contrary, I found the bar service slow; and the barman then topped up my guest ale with Tetley and did not apologise. Also an expensive pint.
10 Mar 2008 22:01
Friendly multi-roomed local pub with TV's, a jukebox and a pool room. Has Tetley Bitter, Mild, Burton Ale and a guest on handpull - on great form.
10 Mar 2008 21:39
The North Eastern Hotel, Goole
If this is much improved, I dread to think what it was like before, because it's a dive now. No real ale.
10 Mar 2008 21:34
Also has Sky. My Durham seasonal beer was served at the perfect temperature
2 Mar 2008 22:54
Has been closed now for almost 6 months. A hand car wash is operating in the car park.
17 Feb 2008 18:03
Now called the Harlow Gata, this pub has Sky TV with big screens and serves Taylors Landlord. Comfy chairs.
3 Feb 2008 20:55
The Old Bell Tavern, Harrogate
I think a previous reviewer is referring to the Winter Gardens - the Old Bell is not a Wetherspoons pub as far as I could tell. Good quality ales but no Wetherspoon prices! A classic old English pub.
3 Feb 2008 19:54
3-roomed boozer. Good range of expensive ales and standard lagers. Darts and pool, strong rugby following amongst customers. TV (no Sky).
3 Feb 2008 19:41
The Coach and Horses, Harrogate
Comfortable multi-roomed pub around a central bar. Food is good; choice of 5 ales, all from Yorkshire - Rooster YPA excellent. Has a TV (no Sky)
3 Feb 2008 19:30
Choice a little reduced today from previous visits, but those ales on were in good condition. Does a good Sunday lunch
27 Jan 2008 21:41
Multiple rooms, has Sky Sports and loads of TV screens. Does 3 real ales (Courage Best, Ruddles County and a Dunham Massey ale on my visit). Friendly and attentive barstaff. A tad expensive the only downside.
24 Jan 2008 17:03
The The Melting Point, Huddersfield
Has Taylors Landlord on draught at a hefty 2.80/pt, must the most expensive in Huddersfield. Has a restaurant section, comfy chairs and plasma screen TV.
20 Jan 2008 22:59
Multi roomed boozer with Moorhouses Blond Witch on draught. Has a wealth of City and United memorabilia. Sky sports, friendly.
20 Jan 2008 22:47
Multi-roomed pub with Sky close to Radcliffe Borough FC. No real ale.
20 Jan 2008 22:45
Standard 'Last Orders' pub, with beer garden and surprisingly large rear room. Has Setanta Sports. No real ale
20 Jan 2008 22:42
Two-roomed local pub en route from the Metrolink to Radcliffe Borough FC. Has 2 handpumps but does no real ale anymore
20 Jan 2008 22:34
Landlord and Everards Yule Fuel (1.99), in good condition, but the bar staff are not all well trained how to pour a pint. Both Sky and Setanta on multiple screens. Food looks good value and seems popular (Sunday lunch 4.99 inc a drink).
9 Dec 2007 22:28
They have now added Hoegaarden and Fruli (strawberry) beer here on draught.
9 Dec 2007 22:24
Has 2 handpumps, with Black Sheep and Bank Top pumpclips, but the days of serving anything through them are terminally numbered.
8 Dec 2007 23:44
unusually for a a burtonwood pub, it has no real ales. No hoodies allowed in the evening!
8 Dec 2007 23:41
Under new management. Has been refurbished and is much more open and light than before. They now have Moorhouses Blond Witch cask ale, and do food including Sunday lunch (large size). A little on the expensive side though. Has a jukebox and pool table.
30 Nov 2007 23:26
Has real ale - Fullers London Pride when I visited. Was one of the few places in Stockholm showing England-Croatia.
30 Nov 2007 23:19
Sky and real ales is an all too infrequent combination. 3.05 for a Late Red.
21 Nov 2007 00:01
Thwaites pub, normally has real ale but had run out on my visit
20 Nov 2007 23:55
Certainly not the best place for real ale in the town, but it does have one and also sports on big screen and pool.
20 Nov 2007 23:49
The Stirling Castle, Bridlington
The only real ale here is John Smiths Cask, but otherwise good.
9 Nov 2007 23:13
The New Crown Hotel, Bridlington
There certainly isn't a good range of real ales here, just (not very good) John Smiths Cask
9 Nov 2007 23:09
Now has Setanta Sports. Some of the cask ales are quite expensive. Has a beer garden at the front.
14 Oct 2007 11:38
The Quarry Bank Inn, Timperley
Hydes pub with excellent range of their beers, including Mild and seasonal ales, in great condition. Also had an U21 international match, so I presume has Sky Sports? Will revisit.
1 Jul 2007 18:07
has a quiz night on Thursdays, real ales as good as ever and they helpfully categorise into light, medium and dark beers.
1 Jul 2007 17:54
Recently reopened after being closed for many months. Cask Tetley and John Smiths available.
1 Jul 2007 17:00
Manchester Bitter superb as ever - even my lager drinking friend loved it. Food has gone more upmarket - good quality but more expensive than before. Great jukebox too!
1 Jul 2007 16:58
The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester
Was very much open on June 23rd. The usual fantastic range of well-kept real ales was on, though my Foster's drinking friend was less impressed with his drinks.
1 Jul 2007 16:51
The Hare and Hounds, Manchester
The Holt Bitter was disappointing on my last visit. Had live music on at 3pm Saturday?!
1 Jul 2007 16:49
The Head of Steam, Huddersfield
In the process of being re-painted, more modern furniture has been put in. Beer quality is not consistent, but there is a great range of bottles and always a choice of (fairly expensive) real ales. Coach House Passion Fruit was superb though.
1 Jul 2007 16:45
The Three Horse Shoes, Huddersfield
Sky sports but no real ale - definitely a lager pub
16 Jun 2007 15:31
Tetley, Deuchars and Landlord cask ales. Sometimes food, TV, nice pool room.
28 May 2007 22:05
Staggered up to the hill and thankfully it was open. Looks bigger from the outside, well furnished. Has 3 Jennings cask ales and does food, great view over the moors out the back.
28 May 2007 22:02
The Blacksmiths Arms, Wakefield
Has a reasonable pint of Marstons Pedigree (their only real ale). Food is expensive.
28 May 2007 21:12
The Caledonia Hotel, Ashton Under Lyne
OK Robinsons Hatters Mild and Bitter cask ale.
5 May 2007 17:17
The Station Hotel, Ashton Under Lyne
OK, only 2 of the handpumps on; service slow. Good jukebox though
5 May 2007 17:16
Now has Sky Sports, but only on small screens, which can be a problem when the bar area is busy. Also has a pool table and welcomes kids on matchdays (this is the closest pub to Bury FC)
1 May 2007 23:18
Did have Jennings Bitter on for a while, but no real ale on the last couple of my visits. Has Sky Sports on a big screen.
1 May 2007 23:14
The Donkey Stone, Manchester Airport
They don't have guest beers anymore - just Boddies or Bass nowadays. Still 2.70/pt last month, it is the only real ale in either terminal (I am assuming that 'Busby's real ale bar' in Terminal 2 arrivals, which I have never seen open, doesn't trade anymore).
8 Apr 2007 23:22
Not to be confused with the other New Inn, all of 5 minutes walk away. It has the same real ales too, Tetley and Taylors Landlord, but is a good bit more expensive. Also has a pool table.
8 Apr 2007 23:04
The Lower Royal George, Scammonden
I don't disagree with beermonitor, but just beware this pub still closes 3-7pm on weekends!
8 Apr 2007 22:44
Has Sky Sports, a pool table cask Taylors Landlord and Tetley Bitter. Often has bands on
8 Apr 2007 22:42
4 real ales, Black Sheep Best, Taylors Landlord, and 2 guest ales, from Cottage and Archers, and in excellent form. Also serves food and has a TV with Sky Sports, and is cheaper than most of the outlying Marsden pubs.
8 Apr 2007 22:40
The ales are Black Sheep Best, Taylors Landlord and Ossett Silver King, which was good.
8 Apr 2007 22:33
The Riverhead Brewery Tap, Marsden
Now owned by Ossett Brewery, beers were in good form.
6 Apr 2007 21:52
Also has sports on big screen, and serves Holts seasonal ales
23 Mar 2007 14:42
Is a Hydes pub, also serving their seasonal ale, which was good.
1 Mar 2007 12:37
Great beer (Weetwood), but the overpowering stench of dogs pervades throughout. Had to drink in the doorway.
1 Mar 2007 12:32
Has 4 beers, including Copper Dragon Golden Pippin, large screens for the football and friendly staff. Definite revisit.
19 Feb 2007 13:09
Wetherspoons pub on the northern side of town with usual Wetherspoons features. Service was good and beer quality good too.
19 Feb 2007 13:06
Sky sports on big screens but music is loud and only Tetley on handpull. Friendly enough though and has a pool table.
19 Feb 2007 13:00
Sam Smiths pub near the River Calder. Friendly, and at 1.25/pt you can't go wrong.
19 Feb 2007 12:58
Popular W&D pub with a wide range of W&D beers plus guests from microbrewers. Beer garden to the rear
19 Feb 2007 12:53
Two roomed pub with Bombardier on handmpump. Good value Sunday lunches in a non-smoking section.
19 Feb 2007 12:51
This charming pub has two characterful rooms; one with pine and stools, the other stuffed full of bric-a-brac. TV's for sport, darts, pool. Old Mill Bitter and a guest on handpump. The friendliest pub in Elland, well worth a revisit.
19 Feb 2007 12:50
Thwaites pub with a well deserved reputation for food. Has 3 Thwaites real ales, Bitter, Lancaster Bomber and Double Century on my visit. The Double Century was well kept, and the pub is a definite revisit.
16 Feb 2007 12:25
Quieter of the New Mill pubs, but with less beer choice (just Tetley cask ale) or entertainment options.
16 Feb 2007 12:20
Of the two central New Mill, this is the more boisterous. Had a drinkable but disappointing pint of Timmy Taylors Golden Best, usually one of my favourites. Has Sky, but whether you can hear it over the loud music is another matter.
16 Feb 2007 12:18
The White Horse, Jackson Bridge
Friendly local, opening early on weekends for tea / coffee from passing 'Last of the Summer Wine' trade. Two ales, the guest from a microbrewery in good condition. TV with sport on, multiple rooms.
16 Feb 2007 12:14
Decent pint of Jennings Mountain Man (guest) and Banks Bitter. Sunday lunches, darts, pool, football teams based here. Has a TV.

6 Feb 2007 17:45
Modernly furnished pub with real ale between the bus and train stations

Copper Dragon pub with a range of their beers, nice food (Sunday lunch until 6.30) and pool. Has a TV but no Sky Sports.
23 Jan 2007 22:48
The Commercial Hotel, Slaithwaite
Visited in early Decmber and again on Sunday. The landlord is intending to get guest ales in, but has not got any yet, so currently no real ale. Has Sky Sports.
23 Jan 2007 22:02
The Rose and Crown, Slaithwaite
Comfortable multi-roomed country pub with a fire and Copper Dragon Golde Pippin
23 Jan 2007 21:57
The only change to the previous review is that it now has no real ales
9 Jan 2007 11:39
The Lion Inn (Little Lion), Atherton
Seemed welcoming to me on my visit? Pedigree and Tetley real ales, TV
9 Jan 2007 11:32
Now called 'Old Isaacs'. Has 2 Phoenix beers on - the 'Navvy' was superb. Separate smoking / no-smoking rooms, food, TV's in some rooms and a decent wine range. One to revisit
9 Jan 2007 11:30
Had Hydes Boddingtons, an average jennings Bitter and Wadworths Bitter at a huge 2.40/pt. Disappointing for a GBG pub. Serves food now
9 Jan 2007 11:25
Well the fisrt time I went in, I asked if they had Sky Sports. Someone replied what do you want to watch? When I replied the football, they told me no, but they had boxing on. I asked who was fighting - they reply 'you and whoever you pick'. Has Tetley cask ale. Take care.
21 Nov 2006 23:01
Remote Wolverhampton & Dudley pub with Mansfield Bitter and Marstons Pedigree cask beers. Food available.
21 Nov 2006 22:57
Good friendly little local with 2 rooms and Landlord and Black Sheep cask beers. Will return
21 Nov 2006 22:49
The Foresters Inn, Lower Cumberworth
Large multi-roomed pub with real fire and 6 cask ales - requests are welcome. Large restaurant area (mains approx 8) but plenty of room for non-diners.
21 Nov 2006 22:47
The Sovereign Inn, Huddersfield
Formula 'Vintage Inn' with emphasis on food (mains approx 7. Tetleys cask Bitter.
21 Nov 2006 22:44
Local pub with Sky Sports and Black Sheep Bitter. Food in the evenings on weekends
21 Nov 2006 22:41
Foodie pub with 3 cask ales (Theakstons Masham Ale, Pedigree and St Austell Tribute when I was there). Food is popular - do not expect good service if you aren't dining.
21 Nov 2006 22:39
Friendly pub with Premiership football and a good pint of Camerons cask Bitter.
21 Nov 2006 22:37
3 roomed pub with dartboard, food and accommodation. Taylors Best and Theakstons cask ale (occasional Landlord too)
21 Nov 2006 22:33
Nice Thwaites pub with good food and some history - it was apparently used as a mortuary after floods in 1859! Three cask ales from Thwaites, Lancaster Bomber was in good form on my visit
21 Nov 2006 22:16
Sadly they have stopped serving real ale at all here - the jJcobs Well, Allied and Foresters are all within easy walking distance though. Handpumps are still there.
21 Nov 2006 22:14
The Coach and Horses Bistro, Honley
Multi-roomed pub with a TV but no Sky Sports. Below average Black Sheep Bitter on my visit
21 Nov 2006 22:12
Multi-roomed pub with Sky Sports and guest beers. A bit cramped and smoky
21 Nov 2006 22:10
Multi roomed pub with Sky Sports and tow Timmy Taylors cask ales (Landlord and Golden Best).
21 Nov 2006 22:08
As has Premiership football on TV's and free bananas for patrons!
21 Nov 2006 16:58
Nice country pub. Good pint of Taylors Landlord. Food looks nice but is at gourmet prices
21 Nov 2006 16:51
The Whipping Stocks, Over Peover
Nice pub with beer garden, typical Sam Smiths prices (1.34/pt for cask Bitter).
21 Nov 2006 16:46
Also has a pool table, an unobtrusive TV (for sport and current affairs only) and tables reserved for non-diners in busy periods.
8 Nov 2006 13:56
The British Protection, Stalybridge
Good Beer Guide listed pub with 2 rooms, Premiership football and good real ales.
8 Nov 2006 13:48
Friendly enough down to earth boozer which does breakfasts. Unforunately the last refurb removed the Tetley handpump, so no real ales anymore. Not far from the Huddersfield Town / RLFC ground.
8 Nov 2006 13:36
Old style pub in one of Huddersfield's less affluent suburbs. From the outdoor seating, you can watch the police patrol cars passing - 3 in 10 minutes when I was there. Has a handpump but no real ale. At least the pub is still open - nearby the Little John (Keldregate) is closed and shuttered since a fire, and The Badger (199 Bradley Road) is also closed, though advertising for tenants.
8 Nov 2006 13:28
Formerly 'DB's', the disco lights were going at 6pm on a Friday. No real ales.
8 Nov 2006 13:19
Large Hardy & Hansons pub with a heavy emphasis on food. Poor service for those who just want to drink. 3 real ales, which were OK - Hardy & Hanson Bitter, Greene King IPA and a guest - H&H Olde Trip on my visit. Plenty of no smoking areas.
8 Nov 2006 13:13
This pub has the wrong details - please see the other High Park entry, which shows its true location.
8 Nov 2006 13:10
Also has a guest ale now and is going all no smoking as of 1st Jan 2007.
30 Oct 2006 16:45
Alas, the real ale is off now and they don't know when / if it will be back....suggest trying the Liberal Club just down the round instead - it has 3 Timmy Taylor's and a guest (Empire on my visit). You can get in therewith a CAMRA card or Good Beer Guide.
30 Oct 2006 16:43
The Nont Sarah Hotel, Scammonden
Glorious views over Marsden Moor, Scammonden Water and down to Calderdale (OK includes the M62 too, but you are far enough not to hear it). Food oriented, with a small kid's play area. One real ale, Theakstons Best, which was good. Opens all day - neither of the 2 nearest pubs (Lower Royal George and Jack O Mitre) do.
13 Oct 2006 12:33
Soft lighting and bric-a-brac. Home to the Huddersfield branch of the Stenhousemuir supporters club. Reputed beer quality problems were not in evidence on my visit - 2 cask ales (Tetley and 'Red Bass'). Closed Sunday afternoon. Has a TV.
13 Oct 2006 12:25
Dark 2 roomed pub close to Salford Rugby League ground. Has a Lees handpump, but none on when I was there.
13 Oct 2006 12:10
The Piccadilly Tavern, Manchester
Handpumps are back and beer was OK. Mitchells & Butler pub now.
13 Oct 2006 12:05
Walkabout chain pub with the standard drinks and food. Upstairs and downstairs sometimes show different sporting events. If you in at lunch don't expect everything to be clean from the night before. Bar staff do not seem to pay any attention to who has been waiting longest
1 Oct 2006 10:24
Grand interior and large no-smoking areas. Good range of ales, quality OK.
1 Oct 2006 10:19
Formerly Squire Hardcastles, it still looks like a pub. No real ales - please could someone turn this back into an alehouse!
30 Sep 2006 10:48
Formerly the Parish Pump, indie / rock pub with no real ales
30 Sep 2006 10:40

Multi-roomed boozer around a central bar close to the bus station. Unfortunately the cask Tetley has been replaced by John Smiths Cask. Has Sky sports.
30 Sep 2006 10:37
USB (Urban Style Bar), Huddersfield
No real ales, but a decent choice of Belgian and german beers on draught.
30 Sep 2006 10:28
More homely place on this banal stretch of bars. A handpump would not go amiss.
30 Sep 2006 10:23
Theakstons and Bass have been replaced by 2 changing guests - Davenports and Nellie Dene on Sunday. The no smoking section has disappeared. Has a pool table and Sky sports.
20 Sep 2006 18:26

Robinsons pub with a predilection for bad karaoke. Cask bitter.
20 Sep 2006 18:22
The Albion Inn, Ashton Under Lyne
Robinsons pub with OK cask bitter and mild. Very much an old style boozer
20 Sep 2006 18:18
No real ale on now, and no customers on the 3 times I passed it on Monday night.
20 Sep 2006 18:14
No real ales available - anyone wanting a decent pint whilst at Piccadilly should try the Jolly Angler instead
17 Sep 2006 10:40
The George (Beer Engine), Bury
In the unlikely event of the previous comments about this place enticing you in, don't expect any real ales on offer
17 Sep 2006 10:26
Holts pub with both mild and bitter cask ales at their usual prices - with Wetherspoons next door, this is the only time I can remember a Holts pub being dearer than the pub next door.
10 Sep 2006 13:55
No real ales, but has Sky sports. Can't believe my rating (3) is going to raise the average!
10 Sep 2006 13:48

Deservedly popular pub with beer garden, multiple rooms, TV, pool table and good selection of cask ales
7 Sep 2006 17:41
Cask Tetley and occasional guests. Pool, darts and dominoes, TV with Sky sports. Can be a bit smoky
7 Sep 2006 17:36
Agree with all said before. There are tables outside if it is smoky in.
7 Sep 2006 17:24
Not sure why this pub is popular - the beer (tetleys) is poor and expensive
7 Sep 2006 17:21
Hidden gem amongst the houses between the Greenfield and Woodhead Road. 6 real ales including Adnams, London Pride and a mild on my visit.
7 Sep 2006 17:19
Principally a food pub, they have 3 uninspiring real ales (Ruddles, theakstons and Pedigree). Good service.
7 Sep 2006 17:12
Thwaites pub with potential if it wasn't for the poorly kept ales and scowling service. As one of the locals said 'If you're waiting for the landlady to notice to top up your beer, you'll be waiting a long time'. Real ales are Thwaites Bitter and Lancaster Bomber. Pool, darts, TV food.
7 Sep 2006 17:04
Multi roomed pub with Sky sports and Prem Plus on multiple TV's and big screens. OK cask Tetley is a good bit cheaper buying a pint than 2 halves.
25 Aug 2006 15:46
Has Sky Sports and usually cask Tetleys and Bombardier, but no real ale on my visit.
25 Aug 2006 15:41
One of the best Brewers Fayre's I have been in. An excellent pint of Taylors Landlord, also offering cask Tetleys and Old Speckled Hen. Main emphasis is food, also has a TV.
25 Aug 2006 15:39

25 Aug 2006 15:37
Large pub with a huge beer garden to the rear incorporating a 5-a-side football pitch. In adequate supply of real ale, the John Smiths Magnet did not last far into the afternoon. Barbecue for large sport events at the close by St Helens Rugby league ground.
15 Aug 2006 15:19
Three room basic boozer with bookies at the back. Pool, Sky sports. No real ales. Has bottles of Paulaner, which you don't see much. Friendly landlord

15 Aug 2006 14:58

15 Aug 2006 14:56
The Elephant and Castle, Holmfirth
Smoky pub with multiple rooms, Sky sports and 3 real ales (Black Sheep, Stones and Tetleys). Black Sheep was off but promptly changed, Stones was fine.

6 Aug 2006 09:29
The Albert Hotel, Huddersfield
Traditional pub in the City Centre with heritage listed interior. Unusually the (continuous) bar is split over two levels. No smoking section, food available. TV but no Sky. 6-7 ever changing real ales including a mild, in excellent condition. Very friendly landlord.
6 Aug 2006 09:19
Former Greenalls pub, handily located for the train station. Beer garden. Cask Greenalls Bitter was OK (brewed by Tetley now, I think). Friendly barstaff, darts, TV but no Sky
30 Jul 2006 12:48
Popular multi-roomed pub with TV (no Sky) and real ales inc Black Sheep Bitter in good condition on my visit
30 Jul 2006 12:44
More of a drinkers local than the Roebuck over the road. Sociable, Sky Sports and 4 real ales including 2 guests. Black Sheep Ennerdale was excellent.
30 Jul 2006 12:43
4 real ales (Tetley, Speckled Hen, Abbot and Landlord), expensive. The Landlord was disappointing on my visit.
30 Jul 2006 12:39
If anyone seriously thinks this is the best pub ever, they need to get out more. Prices are reasonable, but the beer wasn't great. Nothing special
22 Jul 2006 12:04
good Adnams Bitter, reasonable prices, Sky sports, big screen, pool table. Will return.
22 Jul 2006 11:59
6 St Chad's Place, Kings Cross
Barmen more interested in chatting up lasses than serving customers. Occasionally has real ale (Bombardier) but not permanently.
22 Jul 2006 11:55
Just over the ring road from the bus station, the refurbishment of this pub has improved it no end. Stone flag floor, 8 real ales, mostly from small brewers, with Landlord on permanently. Reasonably priced.

The Radcliffe Arms, Almondbury
Burtonwood pub with OK Burtonwood bitter on handpull. Pool table, TV (no Sky).
17 Jul 2006 10:32
Coaching inn style pub - I suspect the Con club next door (dated 1631) was part of the same building complex. Pleasant beer garden to the rear, Sky sports, 3 real ales (Tetleys, Ruddles County and Bombardier). A little pricier than its neighbours.
17 Jul 2006 10:29

17 Jul 2006 10:22
Friendly, multi-roomed pub with sports on TV and dartboard. Two real ales, John Smiths and Black Sheep at 2/pint. Beer gardens to front and rear.
17 Jul 2006 10:17
Most comfortable of the lower Paddock pubs, but no real ale.
15 Jul 2006 15:13
The Fox and Goose, Hebden Bridge
Alas, the condition of several of the beers at the late May beer festival was poor, though they were changed promptly. Upon revisiting last week, the quality of the ales served via the pumps was impeccable. Aswell as bar billiards, there are a host of other weird and wonderful bar games.
15 Jul 2006 15:02
The Stratford Haven, West Bridgford
Agree with previous comments - great range of ales and the prices are reasonable also. There is a TV in the front room - no Sky sports

The Navigation Inn, Nottingham
Banks Original (mild), Bitter and Black Sheep Ale on my visit. Sky sports, friendly staff but expensive.
7 Jun 2006 12:08
beers and food were both good on my visit. Beers mostly from the local Alcazar brewery. Nice beer garden out the back.
7 Jun 2006 12:06
Alas, the 7th of the 7 pubs I've visited in Milnsbridge also has no real ale. Ale drinkers should head for Linthwaite, Golcar or Longwood where there is plentiful choice.
27 May 2006 12:28
Thwaites pub with a good pint of cask Thwaites Bitter. Bright and friendly
27 May 2006 12:25
The Sands House, Crosland Moor
Just beyond the urban sprawl from Huddersfield, this pub is a classy food pub with rich smells in the air at mealtimes. Multiple rooms, some non-smoking and a beer garden. Five real ales and a plethora of clocks, few of which seem to have the right time.
27 May 2006 12:22
The Rising Sun Inn, Crosland Moor
Busy cosy back street boozer on the edge of the Huddersfield sprawl. Closes Sunday afternoons. Tetley cask ale - disappointing on my visit

Thwaites pub serving decent food (Sunday lunch was good) at reasonable prices. Pool, darts, TV's, 3 Thwaites cask ales
27 May 2006 12:04
Canalside pub reminiscent of a German beer hall with its long room stretching away from the bar. Pool table, TV, but no real ales.
27 May 2006 11:59

Pretty village pub popular with diners. 6 real ales, expensive but good.

Recent CAMRA pub of the season winner, with a great choice of real ales including stouts and milds in good condition. Food during the day. Recommended
25 May 2006 13:01
The refurbishment throughout the rest of the pub has obviously not reached the toilets yet. Has TV's, Black Sheep real ale.
25 May 2006 12:58
The Shoulder of Mutton, Holmfirth
Pool and darts - but the stools had (loose) cushions? One room full of armchairs but the carpet was manky. Perhaps halfway through a transformation? Black Sheep real ale - OK. Unable to distinguish the gender of the barperson.
25 May 2006 12:57
Comfortable pub with 3 real ales (John Smiths, Tetleys and Bass). Has darts.
25 May 2006 12:48
Best wine bar I've ever been in - 4 real ales from Copper Dragon and other local small brewers. Also a good range of speciality beers.
25 May 2006 12:46
Seems enough of a proper pub to me? I suspect 7 real ales is more than their turnover can keep well - none from microbrewers.
25 May 2006 12:44
Thwaites pub with darts, pool and Thwaites real ale. Has plenty of dinner plates if you are short of a few.
25 May 2006 12:40
Near the cricket ground, this is a cosy local pub with multiple rooms. Enterprise Inns with 3 real ales - Landlord, Black Sheep and Tetley. Has Sky Sports and does food, only downside is the smoking throughout.
25 May 2006 12:39
Some may think the name refers to the abundance of sheep in the area, but no-one will be any doubt after a visit that it refers to the bar prices. At 2.70 for a normal strength bitter, this is the most expensive pint I've had in the North. Almost all seats in the pub were reserved for diners, though there was no-one at all eating when I was in. The only people in were tourists, presumably the locals drink down the hill in Holmbridge. 3 real ales - Banks, Black Sheep and a guest. An idyllic setting though, what a shame.
25 May 2006 12:36
Popular pub just over the road from Leeds main train station. Wood interior, changing real ales (Wylam Bitter, St Peter Mild and Tetley Bitter on my visit), all in good condition.
17 May 2006 18:01
Multi-roomed pub with pool table and 2 cask ales (Worthington and Salopian Gold on my visit).
8 May 2006 13:20
Good selection of beers, all good quality. Has a no smoking room. Located close to AFC Telford but the landlord got very upset when a bit of singing started - called the police even though there was absolutely no trouble!
8 May 2006 13:17
New landlord in, who told me he would have some real ale in within 2 months.
4 May 2006 12:10

Pub with a heavy emphasis on food, but with 2 changing real ales and newspapers for those who just want a drink
4 May 2006 12:01
The Scape House, Scapegoat Hill
Pleasant Jennings pub with virtually their full range of real ales.
4 May 2006 11:58
A little isolated (near the junction with Round Ings Road), this pub had 2 rooms, 3 real ales and does food. Closed in the afternoon.
4 May 2006 11:55
Small 2 roomed rural boozer; completely no smoking. 3 real ales - Black Sheep, Landlord and a guest (from Copper dragon on my visit) in great condition. Very friendly and welcoming - not a pub for sitting in a corner and ignoring everybody else!
4 May 2006 11:13
Originally a pub, this hostelry now concentrates on food, and was very busy with it Sunday lunchtime. Almost completely no-smoking inside, there are also tables outside with a good view over Calderdale. Black Sheep real ale
4 May 2006 11:09
The Waggon and Horses, Outlane
Wheelchair friendly village pub with tables outside. Real ales inc Black Sheep, Landlord. Pool table, Sky sports and reasonably priced food, also Sunday lunches.
4 May 2006 11:06
Pool, darts, Sky sports, good Sunday roast at a good price, Black Sheep and Landlord real ales make this a good bet in my book. Only downside is the beer is expensive for the area. Close to J23 on the M62
4 May 2006 11:02
The Junction Inn, Crosland Moor
Advertises cask ales, has the handpumps with Tetley badges, but no real ale. Has a pool table.
30 Apr 2006 10:47
Signage suggests this is a Burtonwood pub but inside the beer is Mansfield (no real ale). One room local.
30 Apr 2006 10:44
Comfortable Enterprise Inns pub with 5 real ales and Sky sports on a big screen. The last pub before Huddersfield town centre with any real ale!

30 Apr 2006 10:36

Large pub with multiple rooms, TV (no Sky sports), darts and Phoenix brewery real ales. Much more expensive than its near neighbours.
30 Apr 2006 10:17
Cheapest pint I've had for quite a while (90p for a pint of Coach House bitter), but it was OK. Has a pool table at 10p a game. Doesn't have Sky Sports.
30 Apr 2006 10:13
Has darts, table football, quiz night and food weekdays. Also has regular beer festivals. Reminds me of the Queens Arms, Cheetham Hill. No TV's.
30 Apr 2006 10:10
Pub close to the station with 1 real ale from Barngates on my visit, which was OK. Has a pool table and a large (but poorly lit) screen with sky sports
24 Apr 2006 12:19
Bizarrely had no name or sign on the wall outside, though it was clearly a pub. Has sky sports and hartleys (robinsons) real ale. The cheapest of Coniston's pubs.
24 Apr 2006 12:01
Most upmarket of coniston's pubs, more like a hotel bar where afternoon tea seems more likely to be served than a beer during the day. Friendly enough though, and had 3 ales on from larger breweries inc Jennings Cumberland Ale. Has a TV
24 Apr 2006 11:41
Coniston's best pub with at least 4 real ales from a range of breweries including coniston, hawkshead, moorhouses on my visit, in good condition. Food was very good too. Sunroom and beer garden
24 Apr 2006 11:37
The Eagle and Child, Whitefield
Holts pub in good beer guide but ale was below par on my visit. Equidistant to whitefield and besses o'the barn metrolink stops
24 Apr 2006 11:29
Friendly pub with 2 rooms. TV's. Good pint of lees bitter on handpull.
24 Apr 2006 11:27

If you want a good Guinness in this area, you aren't far from the Jolly Angler. The Brunswick does now have 1 real ale on, Theakstons Best, OK on my visit.
19 Apr 2006 14:38
One real ale, Boddies on my last visit, but normally Tetleys. Sound landlord, TV in corner.
19 Apr 2006 14:34
The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester
One of manchester's finest. Agree with everything said before, also has Sky Sports
19 Apr 2006 14:31
Small pub popular for food with no smoking area. Four real ales, tad expensive. No TV's. Has its own accommodation.

Large multi-roomed pub with no smoking area and large food menu. Four real ales. Has TV's but no Sky Sports.

Popular pub for darts, has Sky Sports also. The landlady promised to get real ales in, but still nothing has appeared yet 3months on
19 Apr 2006 14:23
Large old black and white building, looks nice from the outside. Disappointing inside, no real ales. Has TV's
19 Apr 2006 14:19
In an area of poor pubs (except the Slubbers), this is the least appealing. No real ale, dirty, smoky.
19 Apr 2006 14:15
More modernly furnished version of the Lamb, 2 doors away, also with Sky Sports but no real ale
19 Apr 2006 14:08
Games oriented pub, with pool table and strong dominoes following. Good pint of cask Tetleys, TV.
19 Apr 2006 14:04
Advertises traditional ales outside but alas no longer has them at all. Landlord was helpful though.
19 Apr 2006 14:02
Quiet, comfortable Enterprise Inns pub. Has 1 real ale, Timothy taylor's Golden Best which was on good form if a little expensive.
19 Apr 2006 13:59
In its new guise, it now has real ales on again, Tetleys and Landlord, and it was in good form. Also has food and Sky sports.
8 Apr 2006 13:15
Multi roomed pub around a central bar near Afflecks Palace. Used to be a real ale pub, but had none on at 7pm on a Saturday?
3 Apr 2006 12:47
The Market Tavern, Huddersfield
Not sure why the pub has this name as it isn't near a market? En route to the football ground from the town centre, it is reasonably clean and friendly, but doesn't serve any real ales. Ale drinkers should nip up Hillhouse Lane to the Slubbers.
3 Apr 2006 12:36
GBG-listed Holts pub in the town centre. Clean and light, helpful barstaff
27 Mar 2006 12:52

The Ainley Top (Brewers Fayre), Ainley Top
Brewers Fayre pub/restaurant with no real ale. Main attraction seems to be the kids 'Fun factory'.
20 Mar 2006 10:28
Ivy covered carvery pub next to the Premier Travel Inn near M62 J24. Has hand pulled Boddingtons and Theakstons Cool Cask. Not the most well ventilated pub.
20 Mar 2006 10:24
Small country pub close to the M62 with a heavy emphasis on food. Greene King IPA and Black Sheep Bitter on draught permanently. No TV's.
20 Mar 2006 10:19
The Crown and Sceptre, Kensington
First time in the UK I have seen a quiz conducted entirely in Spanish (Mon evening)? Friendly place, beer was good.
10 Mar 2006 12:51
As I am only an occasional visitor to London, this is the first time I have ever had to pay 3 for a pint, though it was a nice ESB. Otherwise fine.
10 Mar 2006 12:48
Neither real ale pump (GK IPA, London Pride) was operational on my visit but the barstaff helpfully pointed me in the direction of Mabels
10 Mar 2006 12:33
One roomed pub with a superb range of beers from all over the world, not far from the Old Harbour. Twelve on draught and hundreds in bottles, from micros and internationals.
2 Mar 2006 15:08
Small community local in the heart of Lindley village. Has a pool table, Thwaites beer (inc 1 real ale, Thoroughbred) at reasonable prices.
21 Feb 2006 14:59
The Spotted Cow, Salendine Nook
How annoying is it when a pub advertises cask ales on the signage outside, but doesn't even have a handpump any more? Has Sky TV and big screens.
21 Feb 2006 14:56
Soulless suburban modern pub / bar. Obviously spent a lot of money recently on the bar, but didn't consider any handpumps necessary.
21 Feb 2006 14:53
First pub in a while that I have walked in and heard classical music from behind the bar. Certainly not poncey in any way though. Mix of ages, pool table, sky TV and 2 real ales (Tetleys and Deuchars IPA).
21 Feb 2006 14:51
Grand building set back from the road, overlooking Quarmby cliff. Beer garden, pool table, Sky TV and real ales (Empire Strikes Back + others).
21 Feb 2006 14:47
The Cotton Factory, Huddersfield
Bar style pub with expensive beer, loud music and no real ales
19 Feb 2006 11:02
Not overly priced? Where do you normally drink? No real ales.
19 Feb 2006 10:59
Very dark, bar-style pub with plasma screens (no Sky sports though). So loud, it can be difficult for the barstaff to hear your order. It's redeeming features are the reasonable prices and the choice of ales - no mean feat considering all the other pubs / bars in the immediate vicinity offer neither of these.
19 Feb 2006 10:57
Good choice of 4 ales. Noisy but friendly, has a pool table. Not far from the station, opposite Sainsburys
19 Feb 2006 10:49
Pleasant pub serving good food lunch and evenings (evenings in a restaurant part). 3 real ales inc Jennings and Camerons. Has a pool table
19 Feb 2006 10:44
Games oriented local pub with a good pint of cask Tetleys
19 Feb 2006 10:40
One of Wetherspoons more interesting pub conversions. Cavernous with a gallery overlooking the floor, and painted ceiling. Anyone know what it was before? Could have been a church, but equally well an old time theatre? As always, competitively priced with a good range of ales (1.39 for a guest ale).
19 Feb 2006 10:39
Anywhere that permanently has Rooster beers will always get good marks from me. With 8 real ales on, the choice is fantastic, and it's always top quality. It's a nice pub too, best in (well actually slightly out of) Brighouse by a country mile.
19 Feb 2006 10:34
Has handpumps but no real ale. Has big screens and Sky sports. Liverpudlian landlord.
12 Feb 2006 10:44
Friendly local near the football ground with a pool table and Tetleys cask ale
12 Feb 2006 10:42

12 Feb 2006 10:38
The Leigh Arms and Station Hotel, Chorley
Good choice of real ales and very handy for the station
12 Feb 2006 10:33
Great back street boozer. So close to Piccadilly, but you need to know where to go to find it! En route to City ground, but Ray the barman is an avowed United fan. Very friendly, with music sessions Sat & Sun night, pioneered the new licensing hours! Hydes Bitter plus seasonal ales, sports on TV. Pretty small, the doors are sometimes closed when busy.
7 Feb 2006 13:54
Friendly community local, popular with all ages. One real ale (Jennings on my visit), big screen Sky sports and a pool table
4 Feb 2006 11:16
The Dusty Miller Inn, Longwood
Country style local pub with a great view out the front. 7 real ales (Black Sheep, Landlord, Tetley Bitter & Mild, Deuchars IPA plus guests), Sky sports and pool tables
4 Feb 2006 11:13
Popular pub for food with 2 real ales, a little pricey. Has a TV but no Sky Sports.
3 Feb 2006 13:29
Still no real ales. Irish memorabilia around the pub suggests Guinness is the go, and it was a pretty good pint of it
3 Feb 2006 13:21
The Mops and Brooms, Borehamwood
good food, good beer, Sky sports, friendly bar staff, nice non-smoking area, what more can you ask?
3 Feb 2006 13:18
Good food, multiple screens and Sky sports, but always show rugby league over football. Tetley and Landlord cask ales.
26 Jan 2006 12:53
Comfortable local with 3 real ales (Tetley, Landlord, Balck Sheep). Pool, Sky sports, a little pricey though.
26 Jan 2006 12:51
Local pub, serving Mansfield beers inc real ale. TV, pool table. The jukebox is almost always in use!
26 Jan 2006 12:40
Multi-roomed local, with Sky Sports, quiz nights and bar food. No real ale.

The Fox at Connaught, Silvertown
Obviously new pub by Connaught Bridge with mood lighting etc. One real ale, Courage Best Bitter. Fairly expensive (1.75 for a half pint of lemonade). Has a restaurant attached (food OK) and also does bar meals.

Great local pub, with 4 rooms. Darts, TV, friendly, choice of Robinsons real ales. One of my favourites.

Alas, the Boddies is now keg, and the Stella was awful the other week.

Real ale (Thwaites bitter) served here, handily en route to Gigg Lane from the Metrolink / bus station.

done up like a lounge bar. Sports friendly, but no real ale.

Decent food, usually has Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, but no real ale on when I visited.

3 real ales on, Worthington, Theakstons Best and Bass and is cheaper than most around. Wouldn't disagree with the previous comment, but is very smoky.

Has cask tetley, is directly en route from the station to the McAlpine stadium. Normally closed on sundays. Usually has Sky Sports on.

Canal Tavern, Stoke on Trent
Bit loud, but OK, better than the current average. Hardy & Hanson Rockin Rudolph was in good form yesterday (Blue Bell not open - seems a common trend)
