Had a pint of Old Peculier here after visiting the abbey. Interesting decor and a tad touristy but it was a good pint and they had some quality old music. Recommend.

After a walk up the 199 steps to the Abbey & back down again it was time for pub number 4, this being one of 2 pubs in Church Street for me to tick from the 2015 GBG.

Carpeted throughout with old wooden beams, wooden and brass tables, very old and tired decor but it does add to the charm. Look out for the port hole in the wall near the bar.

Pictures on the wall depicting the sea and old Whitby.

4 ales on the hand pumps, Caledonian Deuchars IPA, Theakston XB, Old Pecuiler and my choice which was Double Cross IPA @ 4.2%, another decently kept beer.

Dining room to the rear that overlooks the harbour and the front snug has a nice view of the steps to the Abbey.

Blimey. The decor of this place is somewhat reminiscent of the working mens club my Grandad frequented in the 1980s. Friendly welcome, but the average age of the clientele matched the age of the decor when we popped in. Worth a visit if thirsty from walking up the. Abbey steps.

A very enjoyable warm cosy pub. My pal went for the Old Peculiar, myself Theakstons XB. Both in top nick.

Liked the sliding door to get into the bar. Like many Whitby pubs, I could have sat there all night.

This pub is a bit like Marmite......I visited on 2 nights recently, the first night the Deauchers was fine... the 2nd the young lad just didnt seem to be interested...

The food appeared to be in good order and the pub does have some great views...... on previous visits I have always thought this pub kept a decent pint, I just seem to think that young lads sometimes just cant give a xxxx
