Now called The Tap House - great selection of ales and world beers - had Hardknott Continuum on draught - excellent. Good atmosphere.
13 Apr 2015 10:12
Never drank in here but did notice that it was all GK ales plus a TT Landlord. However, did stay in the hotel and that was fine as was the breakfast.

Mulberry Tree Hotel, Stockton Heath
refurbished 2015 due to competition from Costello's nearby - now serving range of Weetwood ales and selection of other - likes to advertise ales it does not have on or that have been on and gone...so expect to have to make a second choice - I'm sure they'll get on top of it - trying too hard - but fair play, at least things have changed here for the better. They also serve range of craft with Brewdog Punk IPA on draught @ £4.80 pint!!!

Dreamland - 15 ales/10 ciders/21 English wines/6 meads + craft lagers...what's not to like? Many of the ales are from local breweries and the cheapest served up is Potbelly Best (Kettering) at £2 pint. Apparently this pub had been closed for 6 years and re-opened December 2014 - no music is played (generally) and there are no slot machines - the landlord and staff are very friendly and so are the locals - the only pub in Huntingdon worth considering if you are into ale...keep up the good work 9/10 (I never give a 10).
11 Apr 2015 06:53
Easily the best drinking establishment in Huntingdon? Not any more - see Falcon. This pub had 4 ubiquitous ales on Doom Bar, Landlord, A N other and Tribute (none of them local) - had the Tribute - very disappointing Cornish Pale Ale and poured by inexperienced staff.
11 Apr 2015 06:46
very friendly landlordess who initially was knarked about me calling Late Rooms when turning up and finding closed - we left on good terms though and tbf she gave a discout of £15 as I was alone. Room - clean though not en-suite. Food - tasty enough. Ale - two on from Donnington brewery - acceptable. The 12thC Church 5 min down road worth a look...no ale there tho.
9 Apr 2015 18:55
Stopped for an ale which was OK...looked like it could be a busy place - the cafe over the way does a mean cheese & pickle sandwich.
9 Apr 2015 18:53
Stopped here over Easter weekend for a couple of pints before trudging up to Bampton - 3 ales on with Brakespear (my choice) being very well served - enjoy.
9 Apr 2015 18:50
Quirky and friendly - warm and welcoming. Three real ales on the go Moreton Mild, a West Berkshire Bitter and White Horse Blond - tried the last two - both good.
9 Apr 2015 18:48
Stayed here - clean enough for walker...nothing fancy. Also ate here and the curry was good. Two ales on the go...had two pints of the Moreton Mild which was good - landlord and missus friendly/helpful.
9 Apr 2015 18:47
Went off-piste off the Thames Path and found the Blue Boar...CAMRA listed. Had Otter ale and Brakespear best - the latter was the best. Had a BLT sandwhich was very good - ideal. Seats out front premium in good weather - staff...courteous and visually pleasant.
9 Apr 2015 18:44
The Rose Revived Inn, Newbridge
The reviews below sound dreadful. Here is what I experienced - two pints of Mauldons (another Suffolk Brewery) with first being served at 10.30am...fair play. Beer garden very nice as were the bar staff pleasant enough tho did feel undercurrent of anti-walker animosity in landlord who patrolled the pub like something out of 30's Germany. 6/10 +1 for serving before 11am.
9 Apr 2015 18:41
At least it was open and the Arkells Hoperator I had was more than acceptable after 15 mile hike - clean and friendly...what's the problem?
9 Apr 2015 18:36
The Bakers Arms, Somerford Keynes
What beer gives you more pleasure asking for it than drinking it...Butcombe is the answer - always a pleasure requesting it! Had lunch here and a couple of pints o Butcombe - food (pork pie) good and ale almost as good as it should be...
9 Apr 2015 18:34
had a 50p off voucher and the bus dropped me right outside - woulda been rud not too. OK, reasonable selection of ale and the Wychcraft Blonde I had was almost as good as it should be. looked to be some interesting characters in there.
9 Apr 2015 18:32
Great staff - friendly and welcoming - Streatlet best £3 and tasty/well kept - food tho...hmm pretty bland - the gravy with bangers and mash was deffo bisto. Look chef, cook the sausages in a pan - fry some onions in the residual oil - add stock or marmite with water - thicken with flour - season...dead easy.
9 Apr 2015 18:28
The Catherine Wheel, Henley-On-Thames
Nowt wrong - stayed here and the rooms good - request 2nd floor to avoid noise Fri/Sat. Ales - nothing to write home about but can't be beaten on price.
9 Apr 2015 18:25
I stayed here and the rooms were clean and comfortable BUT rooms to the front beware as there is an 'unofficial' taxi rank outside where at the weekend there is high brow riff raff on the streets shouting and carrying on until the wee hours. Apparently it's £5 cheaper to get cab Eton side of the Thames - hence the taxi rank. The place itself though is OK and suprised to read comments about ale as the Windsor & Eton Brewery ale I had was excellent BUT £4 pint! There was also a beer fest due (local ales) the following day.
9 Apr 2015 18:22
reasonable selection of ales - Brakespear was good - if you're peckish and don't fancy full blown meal go for the Scotch Egg...top draw.
9 Apr 2015 18:17
The only 'real pub' in town - all the others as far as I can tell are primarily eating establishments - three ales on when I visited - tired surroundings looking tho.
9 Apr 2015 18:15
The best Le Frog by far for service and ambience - the staff were truly excellent - wrong burger sir, sorry - keep that one and we'll get another and throw in a free jug of beer (4 pints)...now that is service. Beer...so, so...Parislytic the best.
14 Feb 2015 14:40
rolled up on a late sesh - never really took the place in but remember it being very busy - ok. If you want a decent beer in Paris head off to L'Express de Lyon on the Rue de Lyon near the Gare du Lyon...cracking beer.
14 Feb 2015 14:38
The Frog at Bercy Village, Paris
OK, prob the best Le Frog decor wise and the microbrewery is impressive. The ale tho aint all that...the best IMO is the 5.2% ABV Parislytic, the rest are low moderate to poor, tho never tried the bottled gear.
14 Feb 2015 14:35
Top of the Latin Quarter near Pantheon - great pint of Bombardier and friendly
14 Feb 2015 14:32
2 ales on chalk board - none available at bar. Busy place but no ales is a non-starter.
21 Sep 2014 18:28
3 real ales - all from local brew - good pale ale. Friendly staff - good selection of whisky - best bar in Tobermory IMO.
21 Sep 2014 18:26
1 real ale available - Jarl from Fyne Ales - good quality. Also ate there in the evening and food was very good with attentive service - easily the best bar we visited on the Isle of Mull.
21 Sep 2014 18:24
The Whitefriars Olde Ale House, Coventry
Think there were six ales on offer and three cider when I was in Sat - plumped for Slaughterhouse Saddleback 3.7% - in great condition. There is a beer garden and a band were setting up out there (they looked like they were going to be loud). Oh yes, and the Gents toilet floor is still wet...so keep checking your laces are tied!
8 Sep 2014 08:51
When you've done visiting the real ale establishments of Cov and are looking for late night with quality beers, get yourself in here. Craft ales abound but think the couple of Bryatts available are cask - open until 2am Sat night.
8 Sep 2014 08:46
Five ales on (didn't see any guests) - Hobgoblin, Doom Bar, TT Landlord, OS Hen and Theakston's Old Peculiar which we had a pint of each - in good condition.
8 Sep 2014 08:42
The Town Wall Tavern, Coventry
Respectable pub frequented by Coventry people - reasonable selection of ales but more of the ubiquitous brands than any local or micro ales - still the Adnams Broadside was perfectly acceptable - would visit again.
8 Sep 2014 08:37
The Gatehouse Tavern, Coventry
Visited on Saturday evening - pretty quite - six ales on as stated in previous post. The most local brew was from Church End which I think is Shropshire had two pints of this - it was decent enough and well kept.
8 Sep 2014 08:35
Day after Brewdog AGM - visited Dunnottar Castle and stopped for couple of pints/lunch in the Marine - quality food/ale/ambience.
22 Jun 2014 18:21
Top quality traditional pub serving great selection of ale and extensive whisky range - outstanding.
22 Jun 2014 08:28
Is OK, had Cromarty ale on Happy Chap when was in there plus a few other mainstream...acceptable.
22 Jun 2014 08:26
Quality establishment selling fine range of ales and extensive selection of whisky.
22 Jun 2014 08:23
Popped in for a pint pre=Brewdog - had one ale on, Lia Fail from Inveralmond Brewery - it was in good condition. The staff were helpful.
22 Jun 2014 08:20
The Victory Hotel, West Mersea
3 ales on - Deuchars IPA and Adnams Broadside - there was a 'Victory' ale on offer - I asked who brews it? - Deuchars was the response...in that case I'll have a Broadside thanks... the Broadside was great though and the place is friendly...good for families as highlighted elsewhere.
9 May 2014 08:34
The place to go in West Mersea if you want local, well kept ales - good work.
9 May 2014 08:31
The real deal - best bar on island in my book - friendly staff - made the effort to get us a sandwich prior to serving food - ham off the bone as well. Real Ales in a bottle - the Islay Ales Single Malt was top draw.
9 May 2014 08:29
The Harbour Inn and Restaurant, Bowmore
Looks good from outside and bar looked cosy - no ale though...
9 May 2014 08:26
The Sack of Potatoes, Gosta Green
Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild 6% available this weekend along with a few other ales - expensive but beer quality is good. The food looks Brake Brothers though...
6 Apr 2014 21:42
Serves Banks Mild but I plumped for a Marstons Smash 4% because not seen it before - was good. This pub is a gem in a very run down area of Birmingham - I like that though.
6 Apr 2014 21:39
Itchen Valley Pure Gold 4.8% was my choice of beer here and the starting point for a great weekend in Birmingham...this is a good pub if you want real ale.
6 Apr 2014 21:37
One of the many great pubs we visited in Birmingham over the weekend attending Mammal Conference...we had a great time and the beer is top notch.
6 Apr 2014 21:33
Went in late on a Friday and it wasn't that busy really - served straight away and the ale I selected Daleside Sea Fever was good.
6 Apr 2014 21:30
The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham
Big selection of Ciders and Ales - good service and quality of Salopian was excellent.
6 Apr 2014 21:23
Probably the best pub of the 11 we visited over the weekend - great beer in a friendly clean pub.
6 Apr 2014 21:21
Dived in here after Wellington closed at 12 as is open until 1am - not busy, good service ales acceptable and reasonable choice.
6 Apr 2014 21:18
3rd pub on a Friday in the Digbeth area and what a belter - good quality ales and friendly welcome awaits.
6 Apr 2014 21:15
Great boozer with 4 Real Ales on the go and DJ Sam playing jazz funk/soul until the wee hours - well worth a visit.
6 Apr 2014 21:10
Good selection of ales in reasonable condition - had Jarl on sale when I visited...have tasted it better though elsewhere...sharper more hoppy.
19 Mar 2014 21:21
Busy friendly pub with good selection of ales and whisky. Staff are very nice indeed.
19 Mar 2014 21:18
Gem - this pub is well worth a visit from hub-bub of city centre. 7 ales on mostly golden...all good quality. Highly recommended.
19 Mar 2014 21:16
The Prestoungrange Gothenburg, Prestonpans
Back again with some friends - the seafodd platter was just great - many thanks. Goth Stout still available and good.
19 Mar 2014 21:14
The Levenhall Arms, Musselburgh
Did the walk from Musselburgh to Prestonpans with this pub as a visit - 2 ales on both good. Check the 'Barred' list on notice board
19 Mar 2014 21:12
Ale (Copper Dragon) £3.40 pint in LS26...madness! Had meal there as well, place was busy. Had Haddock and chips with mushy peas £9.95...just about acceptable, mushy peas had most flavour. Not sure why this pub so busy - maybe the Old Masons Arms (Toby) is forcing a race to the bottom in terms of quality?
19 Mar 2014 21:09
Adnams boozer rammed with Col U fans and two officers from Kent Police! U's were playing Gillingham that day. It is an Adnams pub and had good range of ales from them plus couple of guests. I had Ghost Ship from Adnams and find it is always a nice pint wherever sampled. I like brewery pubs that have guest ales from other brewery's, so well done Adnams. Decent boozer and suspect it is even nicer on non-match days.
12 Jan 2014 20:35
Open - half curry house (Gurka) half pub - the pub half retains it's character as a pub as is frequented by restaurant and non-restaurant clientele - it is separate from the restaurant. It serves three real ales from the Colchester Brewery, including a Porter on my recent visit. Not tried the restaurant but believe has a good rep. Well worth a visit.
12 Jan 2014 20:30
On the Essex Way long distance path - 3 ales none of which I'd consider local. A stout from Greene King, an Adnams ale and one from Thwaites. Ornate pub with friendly enough staff.
23 Dec 2013 23:02
This pub is great - three ales on two local (Brentwood Mild and Old Growler Red Santa) plus Banks & Taylor Turkey Trauma which was top draw as was the Old Growler tbf. Two lovely ladies serving, very attentive. Had some food off the menu and was simple but good quality and reasonable portions. Also stayed the night in the converted windmill - good. Recommended.
23 Dec 2013 22:58
The Square and Compasses, Fairstead
Only pub for miles around methinks - the nearby Terling Inn being boarded up. Ales here are served on gravity - on my visit there were two Adnams on offer. Opted for Best, first pint was very cloudy but changed without any qualms - they pilled aother from same barrel and this time acceptable - tasted OK. I'd been walking Essex Way (passes pub) and it had been lashing down all day, so good find.
23 Dec 2013 22:52
Boarded up Dec 2013 - looks like it has been for a while. Terling has quite a few houses in the village...to much drinking wine at home me suspects.
23 Dec 2013 22:47
Three ales on, all Greene King (yawn!). Fortunately they had the GK stout which is acceptable. Had the steak & ale pie...should be called mushroom, steak & ale pie - tasty enough though. Not really a pub in the real sense of the word. Gets a 7 for the food and stout.
23 Dec 2013 22:45
Room and shower good as per previous post - breakfast good. On the ale front, unfortunately only Greene KIng ales available - Best and Speckled Hen, the latter was bland - was 7 marked down 1 for ale selection.
23 Dec 2013 22:41
Been here a couple of times before, remains good. 8 ales on 3/4 from Cheshire plus 3 craft ales (including Thornbridge Jaipur). Weetwood is the best value ale (£2.50 pint) with guests usually over £3 depending on ABV. Best ale I had last night was Slaters Blitzen at 4.0%. There is a bar over the road @ 22 Church Street, think used to be wine bar but now house Blue Ball Brewery with three handpumps and numerous craft - good beer in here.
13 Dec 2013 09:44
The Cholmondeley Arms, Frodsham
Last pub of the night - 3 ales on, couple of Marstons, one of which was EPA (poor beer this one IMHO) and a Jennings Snecklifter which is a great beer. Had the latter and it was in good form. Pub seems alright to me, pleasant enough staff.
13 Dec 2013 09:35
Two Harvey's ales and Dark Star Hophead when I visited Saturday lunchtime - had a pint of Hophead and a dark beer form Harvey's whose name slips me. Both pints were excellent. They also appear to sell quality 'local' lagers on draft which I'd be interested to try sometime. Staff were very friendly and pleasant in a natural way - well done.
8 Dec 2013 20:28
Lovely pub - decked out old worldy, very nice ambience. A Greene King pub I believe, had two of their Suffolk offerings on and the more local Dark Star Hophead which is an excellent beer and the one I opted for - it was in good condition.
8 Dec 2013 20:25
Ye Olde Smugglers Inn, Alfriston
Very nice pub with friendly staff - had four ales on when visited, there from Harvey's and one from Skinners of Cornwall called Cornish Knocker - opted for the Harvey's...it was in good condition - wish I could have stayed longer but had already done the rounds by then - recommended.
8 Dec 2013 20:23
I read reviews before coming to Alfriston and decided to see if Star as bad as people make out. Not a bit of it, there was a wedding going on and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. They had two ales on, one from Long Man and the other from Beachy Head (both local) - I had the latter and it was in good condition.
8 Dec 2013 20:19
Came in Saturday lunch about 12 - already a few in and they kept coming. Most were there for food, the menu looked great. Had there ales on all from Long Man - Best, Old Man and Blonde, had the first two - the Old Man was particularly good.
8 Dec 2013 20:16
Very nice pub with a nice crowd - six ales on and the Trappers Hat in good condition - would come back - friendly.
5 Dec 2013 18:21
Popped in for a pint after walking Hooton to Hoylake - had a Peerless ale which I think is local brew, was OK, could have been better. Ship Inn better bet for ales IMO.
5 Dec 2013 18:19
Very nice pub, quite refined compared with other drinking establishments in Oswestry. had 4 ales on the go - the LocAle Stonehouse Bitter available. Real fire on the go as well - well worth a visit. Gents toilets being done up at the moment.
3 Nov 2013 17:20
The post below should read Offah's Dyke Brewery...Stonehouse ales were available in The Plough and The Griffin - apologies.
3 Nov 2013 17:16
Went in here at about 6pm, nobody in other than couple of blokes. The interior has been modified to resemble nightclub. They did however have three well presented handpulls with selection of LocAles from Stonehouse Brewery Harvest Gold 3.8% Thirst Brew 4.2%, Grim Reaper Porter 5.0%, all were well kept. I particularly liked the Harvest Gold. We came back later at 11pm and the place was rammed with a young peasant crowd who were really enjoying themselves - enjoyed it.
3 Nov 2013 17:15
4 ales on handpull, nothing special really and 1 on gravity Cambrian Gold which I had, OK. Barman/landlord seemed bit offish - scruffy interior.
3 Nov 2013 17:04
First visit here, outstanding, as a pub should be. Had quality Colchester Brewery stout (x2) and Farmers Ales Pucks Folly (Maldon) which was also great. The latter went while I was there and landlord put on new barrel, tested it and took it off as not happy - good skills. Will make bee-line for this place when next in Colchester.
7 Oct 2013 20:08
Formerly known as The Clarence, I normally presume catchy names such as 'Purple Dog' synonymous with bad can't be @rsed served ale (if you're lucky)...and I'm normally right! In this case however I am wrong - four ales on cask (two local) and one on gravity (also local). Had two Colchester Brewery ales and both in good condition - friendly staff and mixed crowd - believe it is open until 1.30am weekends.
7 Oct 2013 20:03
Had couple of pints in there before going to Thai restaurant over road - friendly staff and locals, made us welcome. Two ales on the go (both GK I think) and another house ale which I think is also brewed by GK - had the latter and (as advised by gentleman at the bar) the beer was very good condition.
7 Oct 2013 19:57
Serves Jaipur and many, many other great beers - if you are in Sheffield via train this place an absolute must.
2 Oct 2013 21:51
If this is indeed 'PI' I was there a week ago - great ales and bottled beers and the pie, peas and mash was well worth the £7 - recommended.
2 Oct 2013 21:46
Great selection of bottled beers - good range of English ales including Marble Dobber and Thornbridge Jaipur two excellent ales. Had some tapas as well, good. Bar PI down the road to your right is pretty good as well.
2 Oct 2013 21:42
Popped in lunchtime with a few colleagues - JW Lees pub so expect the ridiculous glass and mundane selection of ales - quiet.
2 Oct 2013 21:37
Bustling restaurant/cafe/bar - 3 or 4 ales on the go - back end of East Lancs Rail Ale trail...people really seemed to be enjoying themselves - thumbs up for Bury.
29 Sep 2013 09:52
Great little bar just round corner from City Gent - had well kept Blackjack and Ilkley cask ales + 1 other when there. Has good range of craft ales, nice crowd. Well worth the vist, like to go when less busy.
15 Sep 2013 08:50
Drove past this pub a few times in March, managed to get in here on a late Sunday afyternoon/early evening as part of canal holiday. Short menu mostly concentrating on steaks which the four of us went for - excellent well cooked with accompaniments such as onion rings, mushrooms, etc. 4 real ales available - good friendly pub.
17 Aug 2013 15:40
Robinsons Ales (yawn)...the food was good and my companions all liked it there - expensive gastro pub, if you want real ale other than Robinsons then visit the Cotton Arms down the road.
17 Aug 2013 15:36
4 ales on when I visited - most local was Salopian Shropshire Gold. Looked a good honest pub.
17 Aug 2013 15:33
No real ale, Brake Brothers food - empty on a Friday night except for couple of families.
17 Aug 2013 15:25
Respectable, traditional pub with very well kept Robinsons ales (4 on when I turned up) - if you are on look out for real ale in Ambleside try The Gilded Lily and Queens Hotel.
10 Aug 2013 08:46
Friendly locals and staff - best selection of Cumbrian ales in town, 6 on when I visited. If you'd like to try other real ales in Ambleside the next best two hostelries are The Gilded Lily (4 Cumbrian ales and very pleasant environment) and The Unicorn (very well kept selection of Robinsons ales and traditional pub interior) - both well worth a visit as is the Queens.
10 Aug 2013 08:42
The Queens Head Hotel, Troutbeck
Stayed here two nights - accommodation was good to be fair. Only meal I had was cooked English breakfast with coffee which was £12.50 supplement on top of room - steep but reasonable quality. Ales - Robinsons (yawn), why is Robinsons so prevalent in Lake District when there are so many quality breweries in the area? I went and drank Cumbrian ales at Mortal Man up the road but did have half pint of Old Tom on my return and it was in good condition.
10 Aug 2013 08:38
Beer choice and quality was top notch - 4 Cumbrian ales to choose from including Coniston Bluebird, Loweswater Gold, a Hesket Newmarket Ale and a Hawkshead. Great beer garden as well - also, had the vegetable Tagine along with Tzatziki as side dish, all homemade and delicious - no issue with paying slightly higher prices for quality and location.
10 Aug 2013 08:32
Decent ales but most expensive pub on the street - Peroni my lager drinking acquaintance had was £3.95...
3 Jul 2013 18:56
The Oak Tree, Catterick Village
Sam Smiths pub with usual value for money drinks - has real ale on cask - nice historic pub.
3 Jul 2013 18:52
The Bay Horse, Catterick Village
Jennings pub with a couple of Jennings ale - drinkable. Place seemed busy enough with the food crowd - sat outside in fact for some peace and quite- Catterick is a nice village.
3 Jul 2013 18:51
Nearest pub to campsite we could find. Had two ales on, both OK.
3 Jul 2013 18:47
Tweedies Bar at Dale Lodge Hotel, Grasmere
Got here at opening time a few weeks back - great range of ales - bit dark inside if I remember rightly but if weather good there is a massive beer garden.
3 Jul 2013 18:39
Found this pub walking back to Langdale - great selection of ales, busy, but seating available outside if weather good - recommended.
3 Jul 2013 18:37
All change here - now a Daniel Thwaites outlet and has had £250k refurbishment (incl. gents toilets...not before time!). It now serves 5 Thwaites ales and occasionally has a guest. Landlady is friendly and welcoming - don't know about food. Busy.
2 Apr 2013 09:20
Porter's Ale House, Warrington
Back in here last Thursday - ales now £2 pint...but you'll struggle to find a decent one amongst the usually six offered - needs to up it's game on the real ales...
2 Apr 2013 08:56
Bitterly cold in Oldham Easter Monday...what's new! Had a pint of Robinsons Hoptimus Prime which I've not had before - it was very well kept and had flavour. There were three other Robinsons ales on and the landlady was very friendly and cheerful - it was though cold in there - would go back though.
2 Apr 2013 08:24
Opened at 2pm on Easter Monday - private party pending. It had two ales possibly three on the go - can't remember what I had but it was on it's way out, like the current landlords - change of management pending apparently.
2 Apr 2013 08:15
Popped in for one because Whittles taking time opening. Two ales on, ordered Marstons EPA but had to return (cloudy) - no problem changing for other which was Doom Bar which was ok but not an ale I rate that much. The place itself was sunny on a cold day and spacious but airy - a little more effort on the real ale front would be good for them and punters IMO.
2 Apr 2013 08:09
Popped in for a couple pre v Col U game. Nice pint of Phoenix Spotland Gold and an absolute belter of a pint from Penpont called Cornish Gold...others available, good pub.
2 Apr 2013 08:04
Been meaning to come here for years - so at last I donned my walking boots and trudged over from Warrington via Sankey Valley Way - a good walk. Finally found the Turks Head after visiting pub called Olde England (fine selection of ales). The Turks Head had 12 ales on the go and a good selection of continental beers. I had 3 pints of 3.5 from Outstanding Brewery of Bury - it was top notch. The locals and staff were friendly and welcoming, one small point though - please sort the locks on the mens traps.
31 Mar 2013 08:15
Stumbled upon this pub looking for Turks Head. It had a sign outside which said 'real ales' - I fully expected to find Bombardier or GK IPA on offer (yawn) but no 7 real ales with one brewed on the premises. When next in SH will be back and recommend it.
31 Mar 2013 08:10
Like comment below, I to was a U's fan making a day of it - great pub with trains adding to ambience (what is it with trains and real ale?) - had an ale from the 'Outstanding' brewery which is Bury based - real good.
31 Mar 2013 08:06
Been coming to Edinburgh for a few years but never made it here until this year - the evening was well on but I remember there being good selection of ales and whiskies plus a nice ambiance.
31 Mar 2013 08:03
Great selection of ales all admirably managed and served by one barmaid - they know their stuff here - two 4Ts ales available plus countless others - nice 80's music, XTC, Ultravox, etc...
10 Feb 2013 19:44
The Salford Arms Hotel, Salford
Was in Friday - had a Blackjack ale on and another LocAle as well - nice pint of proper Manchester Ale the Blackjack - big head and light hoppy flavour. Will return despite raucous males in corner.
10 Feb 2013 19:42
Visited lunchtime on a Thursday - 3 real ales (I had London Porter from some brewery in Herts). Good selection of craft ales and lagers. Fish Finger sandwich I had was good quality.
13 Jan 2013 09:52
This pub has improved immeasurably over the last few months - been done up but has retained key features. The Gents toilets are now clean and respectable (they were an absolute disgrace previously). The atmosphere in the place on Sat lunch was good - 2 real ales on GK IPA and Jennings Cumberland - I had the latter, it was good. Bartender advised that they may bring back pool table (good idea) and she presented me with a loyalty card - 8 pints and the 9th is free - reasonable deal. Very well done to the manager/staff in making this well located pub respectable again - will be back
13 Jan 2013 09:47
3 real ales on - Bombardier, GK IPA and the one I had London Pride was OK - reasonable ambience - room for improvement but getting there.
13 Jan 2013 09:42
Packed on NYE during day - got a seat in the bar area and the Haddock & Chips were top dollar - there were two ales if I remember, both scottish - remember the darkish ale I had was average quality - would come back though.
2 Jan 2013 16:07
The Stockbridge Tap, Edinburgh
Two ales on at lunchtime NYE (guess saving others for evening), both good - food (particularly burgers) looked good but did not try - staff looked busy but like they enjoying working together and serving punters - would come back.
2 Jan 2013 16:04
OK for one or two to experience the ambience of the place...then move on. Beer quality good and the house blend is not bad at all.
2 Jan 2013 15:56
Here on NYE - can't fault the service or availability of two real ales and one real cider - the ale I had was good quality. Malt-of-the-Month promotion was Old Pultney which @ £2.70 is not bad for location...it would have been rude not to.
2 Jan 2013 15:50
Quality bar in central Edinburgh - plenty of real ales and mostly from Scottish breweries - well worth a visit.
2 Jan 2013 15:45
Had a couple of ales in here and they were good - bit more vibrant than the Oxford down the way - not everyone wants quiet/unspoilt/traditional/old man type pubs - me, I don't mind either.
2 Jan 2013 15:40
Been in here a couple of times now - once when rugby on TV (Eng v Ire in 2010...Eng got hammered) and more recently NYE 2012. Normally a range of real ales but this seems somewhat reduced now - the ale was ok but the food was over expensive and 'brake brothers'.
2 Jan 2013 15:35
Manningtree Station Buffet, Lawford
I'd heard a lot about this place in the past and happened to be delayed at Manningtree Station on way to Harwich - there was a bar but it looked dishevelled - appeared to be two ales on but didn't look all that - went outside without bothering to purchase and ate an apple instead.
29 Dec 2012 11:04
Half Butt Inn, Great Horkesley
Popped in as was passing on Essex Way - 2 ales on, Bombardier and Woodfordes Wherry - two pints of latter which was good condition but slightly to cold. Friendly enough pub and welcoming enough when out walking.
29 Dec 2012 10:22
Packed - most of pub given over to food but enough room round bar for drinkers. real fire and real ales mostly local - Broadside was delicious. Friendly hardworking, cheery staff - good pub.
29 Dec 2012 10:18
One Xmas ale on which was reasonable quality - place looks tired, empty and on the way out - needs new owner to take it back to what earlier posts describe - it's a minted area so maybe locals could chip in and buy it. Was going to eat here but after one pint in there just did not fancy it.
29 Dec 2012 10:12
The Strangers Home Inn, Bradfield
No Harwich Town Ales on my visit :( However, there were 4 ales on with Adnams Lighthouse being the most local and top draw. Also tried was York Terrier Bitter - not all that I'm afraid - the two other were Xmas variety ales.
Accommodation - £40 but not en-suite, clean though but on my visit Karaoke until early hours of morning (though to be fair I was pre-warned at booking stage) and very boisterous in the corridor outside room - earplugs ensured some sleep. Had beans on toast for breakfast so not really in a position to comment.
Food - vegetarian menu poor (as with most places) - had lasagne which was of low quality - garlic bread was well toasted but I'm sure marge had been used instead of butter.
Overall, the staff and locals are very friendly/welcoming and immediately have a crack with you on arrival - looks a fun place and if I was not so tired from walking Essex Way I'm sure Id have got up and done a tune.
29 Dec 2012 10:07
Ye Olde Cherry Tree, Little Oakley
Popped for some respite from incessant rain after having strayed from the Essex Way! There were 3 ales on and two were of the Xmas variety, the other being Adnams Bitter. Nice pub with real fire - friendly staff - would go again if passing.
29 Dec 2012 09:58
Very nice pub with great selection of ales and malts - very friendly staff - well worth a visit.
24 Oct 2012 21:03
The Golfers Rest, North Berwick
probably the first pub you'll encounter if walking John Muir Way - OK, friendly enough but unispiring ales with limited care - better is the Ship Inn.
24 Oct 2012 21:01
Shocker of a pub - unfriendly, no real ale and the default choice of Guiness is served from a can and frothed up by some gimmick of a machine. as noted previously in 2006 - keep walking and you'll come to the Mackintosh - I'm not one for closing pubs down and don't like to see it, but the sooner pubs like this are closed the better for all concerned - locals and unsuspecting passers-by alike
24 Oct 2012 20:56
The Prestoungrange Gothenburg, Prestonpans
Walking the (overated) John Muir Way we passed this intriguing looking pub. Having had a skinful in the City the night before we were slow getting started. As noted in other reviews, they brew their own Porter and had when we visited one other ale on (cannot remember name - but it was red/brown in colour) - both ales were in excellent condition. Food looks good and the place is very well managed with highly unusual/ornate interior - bar is quality.
24 Oct 2012 20:53
Now known as No1 Bar/Restaurant - fearful when I saw the this but on entering it was generally same layout - 7 ales on the go, fine selection of Malts and still live music on a Fri night...oh, and the toilets have been done up. Went back on the Tuesday night and the ale I had (alchemy) was off - they changed it no qualms.
24 Oct 2012 20:49
The Royal Mile Tavern, Edinburgh
Couple of unspectacular ales on (Deuchars IPA and 80/) - not that well kept. Bitter & Twisted on keg...why? Staff not that interested and all-in-all a tourist trap.
24 Oct 2012 20:36
Second time in here - first was a couple of year ago and it had live acoustic music on a Saturday night and the ale was great. Two years later, on a Friday there was no music and the ale was so, so. Good selection of Malts.
24 Oct 2012 20:30
As stated elsewhere - stunning interior - also good range/quality of ales - always busy weekends... rarely get a seat, but good place nevertheless.
24 Oct 2012 20:24
Think it is just OK - ale not exceptional and often quite bland - had Fraoch on when I was there and not all that.
24 Oct 2012 20:20
Decent boozer - had a scotch real ale festival on when we went in - appears to sell similar products on a regular basis - table service.
24 Oct 2012 20:18
Thought it was a good, busy pub with good selection of ales and whiskies - unfortunately it is in Rose St which I don't particularly think is that nioce an area of Edinburgh.
24 Oct 2012 20:16
As per previous poster from 3 years ago...some things never change. OK though while waiting for train...
3 Oct 2012 17:05
No ale when I went in on Saturday 29th October (on way back from Nantwich Beer Festival) - settled for half a John Smiths keg which was not so bad...it was late and I was not sober!
3 Oct 2012 17:04
Heard a rumour that it is now closed for business - extortionate rent rise the cause I believe...real loss for Warrington this place.
3 Oct 2012 17:01
The Vale of York, Carlton Miniott
Two ales on when I stayed here - Copper Dragon and Black Sheep - Copper Dragon was ok. Food - had fish and chips...if you want real/decent fish and chips go to the White Horse Cafe in Thirsk.
Rooms basic but clean and OK.
3 Oct 2012 16:59
This place came recommended for the food - the Whitby scampi and salad I had was top notch. In addition the bonus is that they had three real ales on - I just had the Theakstons which tbh is not a beer I would usually choose (but it was a LocAle) - it was outstanding - never before have I had a Theakston taste like this...I'm staying here next week.
3 Oct 2012 16:56
Decent pint, but IMO not as good as The Crescent up the road - wouldn't chuck it out of bed though...
3 Oct 2012 16:53
Nipped in here for 1 after completing leg of Irwell Valley Way (Bury to Salford) - great pint, wish I could have stayed for more but had Kings Arms to squeeze in before malt whisky fest at Palace Hotel, Manchester...
3 Oct 2012 16:49
The Old Oak Tree, South Kilvington
Mostly given over to food and it was packed when I went in to the point diners were also in the very small bar area - there were two real ales on when I went in and one included one of the World Top range which was well kept and drinkable...had to leave though after this pint as I was literally being crushed by waiting diners.
14 Sep 2012 21:27
Dreamboat of a pub - made an effort to get here before Col U game at Prenton Park (wish I'd stayed in pub tbh!). There must have been four ales on the go and I had Bitter from the local Brimstage Brewery and it was so good. The sun was out and the beer garden is a good place to be when it is.
14 Sep 2012 21:24
Popped in while waiting for a train - must have been 7-8 ales on the go (how many pubs in Scarborough offer that and at those prices?). I had Wooden Hand Cornish Knocker which was well kept and very drinkable.
14 Sep 2012 21:20
The West Riding Hotel, Scarborough
Nipped in when I was passing - had Theakston Black Bull on but I'm not paying 3+ for that product - left without ordering.
14 Sep 2012 21:16
Saw this pub out of the corner of my eye and you can tell from the exterior it serves real ale. They had four on when I went in - I had World Top Anglers Reward @ 4% and it was well kept. The only let down was the bespectacled friendly barman turning down Rocket Man by Elton John because he 'does not like it' even though most of the punters in there are 20+ years older than him and likely much more discerning in their musical tastes...-1pt for lack of culture.
14 Sep 2012 21:11
Had Black Sheep and Bombardier on when I passed by on the Cleveland Way - I usually avoid both these ales but was thirsty so plumped for the Black Sheep which to my surprise was very well kept and enjoyable.
14 Sep 2012 21:03
Six ales on the go when I visited - opted for and stayed on all night the Boulby Blonde from the Staithes Brewery - it was a fine ale and after 7 I walked 20 miles the next day! I also stayed here and the landlord was very friendly pulling down big screen and putting on England game. The tarrif for a large double room was 25 and this included a fine breakfast - Recommended.
14 Sep 2012 20:59
Good selection of ales in here including more local'ish varieties such as Daleside, Copper Dragon and Camerons plus others from further flung locations. I also had some crab soup in here and the portion was large and delicious served with fresh bread and butter. Recommended.
14 Sep 2012 20:54
Got the feeling it is a meeting place for 'Bay Towner's'. However, the pint of Timothy Taylor's Landlord I had was in good condition and the food looked good and reasonably priced.
14 Sep 2012 20:51
Went in here to eat but it was so hot that I just had a pint and sat outside - they had 4 ales on and none were anything The menu read well but ventilation required.
14 Sep 2012 20:49
The Laurel Inn, Robin Hood's Bay
Theakstons Old Peculiar was top notch - don't mind paying a bit extra for well kept beer (not that you should have to).
14 Sep 2012 20:45
Black Sheep (which I usually avoid unless nothing much else available) and fortunately Gun Dog Bitter from local Northallerton brewhouse available - nice pint and as I was walking Cleveland Way, very welcome.
14 Sep 2012 20:39
Great pub catering for all sorts of people - families, couples, real alers, wine buffs...and so on. Good selection of ales in good condition, large selection of Belgium beers in bottles. Beer fest coming up at the end of Sep 27th-29th.
18 Aug 2012 22:01
Its OK if you are out with the Mrs - bit foodie and modern for my liking - the ales are just standards like GK IPA/Bombardier, etc. If it's quality real ale you are after then the Village Hall is where you should be Thurs, Fri, Sat eves and Sun afternoons till 4pm and eves...unfortunately it was closed this weekend for cellar repairs hence we are in here and I have the hump!!
17 Aug 2012 14:57
Dropped in on completion of Sefton Coastal Walk - very friendly back street boozer - 4 ales on when I dropped in Bass, Summer Lightening and Doom Bar but the one I had Liverpool Organic Brewery- Roscoe Head was top notch - good friendly service to the table - generally unspoilt interior.
8 Jul 2012 08:49
Large boozer with great selection of ales in good order - we were on the back end of a stag and had a few snoozers in the boozers towards the end but landlady was sound and sorted them a taxi. Decent place.
24 Jun 2012 18:42
15 of us landed there on Saturday lunchtime - there were 4 ales on, the two local Bridestones, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber and best of all the Worsthorpe Old Trout which was absolutely delicious. We ate here as well but the food was rubbish - though not bothered about that so much. All in all a decent pub
24 Jun 2012 18:39
Good traditional boozer with a very nice landlady - beer quality good - got flooded on the Saturday like most of pubs in HB.
24 Jun 2012 18:34
We stayed here weekend of the flood - the rooms are very nice and they have not skimped on the re-furb - good selection of ales but at 3.50 pint!! Also would not sell us a pint of ale after hours (residents) but happy to sell wine or bottled lager both of which I detest. The breakfast was good local ingredients and we were well attended to.
24 Jun 2012 18:32
The Shoulder of Mutton, Hebden Bridge
Had four ales on when we visited a couple of hours before it got flooded - staff on the ball - beer quality acceptable
24 Jun 2012 18:27
Went in after a conference round corner - pub was rammed (Euro 2012 on). There was a full selection of Fullers Ales and two Gales ales. I selected the Gales Seafarer and it was good but not as good as the Spitfire I had round the corner in the Mabels Tavern earlier in the day. I had a burger in here as well and it was good.
14 Jun 2012 14:34
Full Shepherd Neame range available when I went in lunchtime - went for the Spitfire and it was a pleasure to drink and hit the spot. I live up N and when I have it up there it is poor - it obviously don't travel well. Pub was clean and tidy
14 Jun 2012 14:31
The Fox and Hounds Inn, Denholm
Nice watering hole after long slog from Jedburgh on Borders Abbey Way - had one ale on but this was a LocALE from Scottish Borders Brewery - nice. Locals friendly and offered us to camp down in their garden and get lashed in Denholm with them - we declined politely and kipped down on the Teviot watching the wildlife.
5 Jun 2012 18:21
Legendary boozer - staff were very attentive, toilets immaculate. The atmosphere is great and the music choice on jukebox good. Live music was on out the back room.
Ales - there were 10 on and of course many were Robinsons. I had the Crouch Vale Yakima and it was excellent - will be back - keep up the good work.
20 May 2012 12:55
The English Lounge, Manchester
As said elsewhere - ale is mediocre in here - there is a choice but it is usual suspects and rarely anything different or from the local area. I had a pint of Doom Bar and frankly it was just drinkable - not off or anything just insipid, flat and lifeless. Other than the ale the place is OK decor and seating wise and a lot of people were eating in there - would not go in here if it was my choice though...and so off we headed to 57 Thomas Street for some decent ale.
20 May 2012 12:49
Decent Everards Tiger and Beacon on sale. Food was OK. Service good. Staff friendly.
14 May 2012 18:37
This is a great little pub and well worth popping in if you are in the are - it had two real ales on, Black Sheep and another which I had whose name I cannot remember, it was delicious and well kept. I also ate there - the kitchen had been turned into chinese takeaway but customers in the public house will be served food at their tables. I was in there at about 6pm and there must have bee about 5-6 people come in a get a takeaway. I had the Singapore Noodles and they were great. Staff in pub friendly and chatty as were locals. Cash back on minimum spend of 5.
14 May 2012 18:34
The Falcons Nest Hotel, Port Erin
Stayed here - very nice hotel and great breakfast. The bonus of the walk round the island I was on was that the Falcons Nest was hosting a beer festival (their 2nd apparently).
7 May 2012 21:53
Found the staff very friendly and sorted me out a room at the Falcons Nest. Bushy's beer and a great interior. Staff said that there are plans to re-open part of upstairs as guesthouse.
7 May 2012 21:50
Okells plus a couple of guests - nice boozer - worth a visit.
7 May 2012 21:46
Three real ales on when I was in - Okells, Red Goose and Hobgoblin...something like that anyway. Friendly staff. OK
7 May 2012 21:43
Second visit here in last couple of years - TT Landlord was good - friendly and busy - unisex toilets.
9 Apr 2012 08:18
Had a Guinness in here as no real ale - requires a change of management to move forward.
9 Apr 2012 08:14
The Nelson's Head, Bethnal Green
Nice relaxing boozer with great tunes with long iintervals in-between tracks - only one ale on
when we were in there (Courage best) - the other lads drank Guinness. Some nice fit birds in there though...
8 Apr 2012 18:44
The Swan With Two Nicks, Little Bollington
in here again recently - it was a Sunday and was heaving. Despite that got served fairly quickly and had two pints of Bollington Bitter. On the food front, the Cheese & Onion crisps with pickled egg were to die for...
1 Apr 2012 18:16
Good selection of real ale - I had the Wensleydale 3.8% and it was absolutely delicious - could not stay for any more though - recommended.
1 Apr 2012 17:50
Stumbled on this pub looking for the Tithe Bar - it had three local ales on and seemed a very nice place - I had the Nick Stafford Ale - Stallion, it was in good condition.
1 Apr 2012 17:48
The food in here is really outstanding - cannot understand low rating. Get there before 7pm for 'early-bird' deal. There are always three ales on and Nick Stafford Hambleton ales are usually one of them. They play Quoits here regularly as well - top pub and keep up the good work.
23 Mar 2012 21:24
The Shorthorn Inn, South Otterington
Had a few pints in here on a couple of occasions - always has real ale on and usually something localish and people are friendly - don't rate the food though - if you want top food go to The Buck Inn in Maunby...you will not be disappointed.
23 Mar 2012 21:19
Tickle Toby Inn, Northallerton
I've been in here a few times - always friendly and always has local ale in good condition. Have also eaten in here and that was fine as well - nothing special - but good enough.
23 Mar 2012 21:16
I was there this week and there were six ales available - I had the Everards Gallantry @ 4.8% and it was in very good condition. Ambience of the place was good as well - cost me 1.70 a pint with my CAMRA 'sell-your-soul-to-the-devil' voucher...can't argue with that...
23 Mar 2012 21:14
Had the TSB in here but not as good as the TSB served in the smaller establishment in Temple Bar...nice crowd in here though
11 Mar 2012 21:15
Had the TSB - it was good ale - are all those other beers they brew real ale?
These Porterhouse really are a godsend for ale lovers - keep up the good work.
11 Mar 2012 21:14
Sinnott's Bar, Dublin, Ireland
Big place - loud music - it had a more nightclub feel to it than a bar - we was there early evening - had a couple Guinness and some whiskey - no Bushmills - there are some tables where you can pour your own beer.
11 Mar 2012 21:11
The Bank on College Green, Dublin
Decent boozer with nice Guinness - it has a nice ambiance to it and we enjoyed our time in there - less busy lunctimes. No real ale though which tbf to them appears to be the norm in Ireland
11 Mar 2012 21:08
Had two ales on when we nipped in before getting ferry to Dublin. We had the Wadworth which was very nice (the other ale on was Hydes). We spoke with the landlady and she advised that the local punters decide which beer come on.
11 Mar 2012 21:04
One of best pubs in Colchester - good selection of ales - good place to read a paper in daytime and have a few.
As for post below - sorry to hear about your confrontation but ring the pub up and discuss it with the landlord rather than posting on public forum.
3 Feb 2012 09:12
Been in here a couple of times over the years - it's OK - the beer quality does leave a bit to be desired and it is not a patch on it's sister pub Fat Cat Norwich for atmosphere. If you want decent ale in Colchester head to the Odd One Out on Mersea Road and the Hospital Arms on Lexden Road is also good.
3 Feb 2012 09:07
The Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street
OK if passing - busy pub with transients - serves real ale but the London Pride was not all that.
1 Feb 2012 19:01
Two handpulls, but both turnround so no ale. Lager served in plastic containers on football days - overall lively with Col U fans but beer pretty poor IMO.
1 Feb 2012 18:57
Under new management so I am informed. Went in for a couple after Leyton Orient game. TV's gone - now selling range of top notch lagers Czech Lagers and Leffe - in the real ale department there is one handpull and it had on Nightwatchman from East London Brewing Co @ 4.5% - it was top notch condition and it was a shame we had to leave for inferior beer elsewhere.
1 Feb 2012 18:54
Ye Olde Custom House Inn, Chester
7th pub of the night - split opinions on this one- real ale available and 6 pints cost 18.80. IMO - soulless place with good seats though. In my companions opinion - couples pub...lets get married...! :(
30 Dec 2011 10:08
should read 2.80-2.90 pint - apologies for the shoddy maths...
30 Dec 2011 10:04
Wadworth 6X, Courage and Marstons when we visited - nice boozer, big and historic interior - darts being played - well worth a visit. 17ish for 6 pints of ale which equates to around 1.80-1.90 pint - good price for Chester. We paid 3.65 per pint in the 'Piscine' Ship Inn earlier...
30 Dec 2011 10:02
Last pub of eight we visited so cannot say much - friendly enough and we got chatting easily to people next to us - 20.70 for 6 ales - busy - looking at notes one of our party (The Lovely Bob) has noted - affluent and potential pick up joint...
30 Dec 2011 09:55
Landlord and Spitfire on in here when we visited - 18 for 6pts of Landlord - nice pub, wattle and daub a feature - one of our crowd thought there was a 'hamster' smell. There were some decks set out so looked like there were going to be some music played later - come to think of it the staff did look a bit DJ like...
30 Dec 2011 09:49
For some reason someone with us thought this place Piscine...? Fire place, Charles 1st, church, spitting feathers, candle on table, helium balloon on ceiling, Cromwells eating house, tapestry, medieval, wattle and daub - great vales 18.70 for 6 ales.
30 Dec 2011 09:43
snug, wide screen tv (fortunately off), dogs, kids, no carpet - felt like a pub - good selection of ales 15.50 for 5 ales which included Phoenix Wobbly Bob 6% and Titanic Iron Curtain also 6%
30 Dec 2011 09:37
Closed when we turned up @ 6pm - we were following the original ale trail as it is 40th anniversary of CAMRA - dissapointed. We rang but were informed that they would not be opening that evening.
30 Dec 2011 09:34
Was not expecting great things from this foodie pub. I was in for just a drink but to my surprise it had to ales on the go - Snowy Owl from Northern 4.1% and some xmas ales from another localish supplier (think it was Weetwood) @3.7%. Perhaps these were just on for xmas as it had one of those 'modern' Bombardier ale dispensers which I presume the xmas ale had temporarily replaced. Had 2 pints of the Snow Owl but as like the beer in the Ring o Bells up the road it was unsatisfying - no bite.
29 Dec 2011 10:19
Foodie pub - had three ales on and the most local being Thwaites Wainwright! plumped for this but it was not satisfying - looks as if they couldn't care less about their ales...marched on to the Walton Arms...
29 Dec 2011 10:13
Had plenty of ales on - no dark ones - darkest was a Tawny coloured Otter Claus Xmas Ale @5% (tentative xmas ale name if ever I heard one) - it was nice enough. The service was impersonal though and the atmosphere in the place was a bit sad, esp. as it was xmas eve. Place looks tired and I did not knpow it was a JD until I got quite close to it - still, no problem with JD pubs but they always seem a bit sad...
29 Dec 2011 10:09
Thought it was OK - compared to the Cricketers I'd been to earlier - had a Titanic Ale on and a couple of others - seemed an upbeat kinda place.
29 Dec 2011 10:06
The Head of Steam, Huddersfield
A good pub, very different in character from Kings Head and differing (but as friendly) clientle - good selection of real ales and cider.
10 Dec 2011 21:53
Been in here many times - it's a good friendly enough pub with fine selection of ales at very reasonable price.
10 Dec 2011 21:46
Nice pub and crowd - 8 real ales on - had two of Moorhouses Pendle Blonde Witch which was excellent.
10 Dec 2011 21:30
Busy pub - had a nice pint of Gathering Storm stout from Elland Brewery - rather small bar for such a large pub - nice pleasant staff though and the crowd seemed alright.
10 Dec 2011 21:24
Nice bar and nice range of ales - can be tough to get a seat though - probably best to go in day time. Marble beers are awesome esp. for me the Lagonda IPA
10 Dec 2011 21:21
Was in there on Friday - it had one real ale on at 3.60 pint - it was an Xmas ale from Tetley and to be fair it was the best ale of the night - nice pub to hang out in as well. Could try upping the selection of ales and dropping the price though - hence 7
10 Dec 2011 21:14
New owners - reduced selection of ales - 3 on last night - Directors, some Theakston ale and another ubiquitous type who's name I cannot remember. 2.60 a pint. Live music which was OK - still doing food - busy - landlord seems like a nice bloke.
13 Nov 2011 12:30
The British Lion (the Pig), Crewe
In before Col U FA Cup game - 5 ales on, had Tetley's Cask - it was good.
13 Nov 2011 12:26
Ale was good and a good range as well - ambiance not all that - big TV with F1 qualifying on and there was some scrot of an old man trying to palm off a battered 50p for the beer the landlord was serving him - the landlord gave him the beer free in the end and refused to accept the 50p. The old git was rude and gestured at the landlord to give him the beer...I'd have turfed the git out.
Crewe looks a very downtrodden place.
13 Nov 2011 12:24
Back in here but at a lunchtime this time round - very nice crowd of people and the ale selection was improved since my last visit (more unusual ones and more selection) - the food looked well nice, the bloke next to us got served pie, mash, peas and gravy and it looked scrumptious - will definitely come back next time in Liverpool.
12 Nov 2011 08:50
Staying at Sparsholt on tree course - nipped down the road for a pint and a meal - food was excellent and the ales were good as well - just a bit pricey - bot otherwise good place.

Was at a conference in Liner Hotel up the road - went in with a mate after the conference - big pub - had 4 ales on and a box of cider - the place was more or less empty and I feared for the beer, however it was pretty good tbf.
The toilets are poor as commented below - no lock on the traps and no bog roll in one of them - not good enough.
12 Nov 2011 08:26
In before Col U game - went and had a look at what they were serving at the bar - no real ale - left and went into ground and had a cup of tea. Will not return (to the pub).
12 Nov 2011 08:13
Made effort to get here early before Col U game at Prenton - nice pub which had 4-5 ales on, had a couple but they were nothing special and I'd had enough heading off to the Mersey Clipper near ground.
12 Nov 2011 08:11
Stayed at campsite and ate and drank in here. The food was excellent, service good and Adnams ale good - well worth a visit, esp for the food.
24 Jun 2011 19:24
Popped in for a cup-o-tea as the past 3 days drinking and walking along Angles Way had reduced me and my companion to teetotalers!! The barman was spot on and made no jibes about us drinking tea when there were four excellent ales available - two of which are brewed on premises - what a shame we were out of steam at this point...
24 Jun 2011 19:21
Outstanding pub - brews it's own beer ans staff are very friendly. The interior of the pub is as a pub should be - the place is clean and the locals friendly - darboard available. keep up the good work.
24 Jun 2011 19:16
4 Ales/Aspall Cider - ale ok as was cider - expensive 3.10 pt - and why keep a parrot in a bar ffs!! Beccles is an unwelcoming place...Bungay is far nicer.
24 Jun 2011 19:13
Found this pub walking the Angles Way - just before kipping down on the marshes. Great food and ales - made the long walk worth it and made sleep a little easier - thanks.
24 Jun 2011 19:09
The Slug and Lettuce, Chichester
Agree with post below - food was ok and they did have two ales on Adnams Bitter and Bombadier (kind of tokenism really I cannot believe that the Slug chain has any real desire to further its ale offerings). The Adnams was in good form and I can't complain. There was also a massive selection of spirits which looked impressive. Brake Brothers made a delivery while we were there... and ground black pepper was unavailable. Staff were polite and attentive and no doubt underpaid.
29 Dec 2010 15:26
Been in and out of here over the years - last night had 7 ales on incl. two local Farmers Ales and guest from Dark Star called Hopback - this was delicious. Always friendly enough in here but as noted previous it can get rammed in summer. I have never ventured in front bar and have been told the locals can get anal if 'strangers' go in there without an invite - knobbers!
29 Dec 2010 15:21
Indeed a good pub, usually 3 ales on, usually always Black Sheep and Tetleys plus a guest which was London Pride when I was in a couple of weeks ago. Bit expensive tho.
23 Dec 2010 15:53
Last pub of 9 on our evening out - cannot remember a lot other than there was a very reasonable selection of ales and the atmosphere was pleasant. Must go back sober and make a judgement.
23 Dec 2010 15:40
Not bad - friendly enough and had a range of ales including Brass Monkey Cheeky 4.2%, Copper Dragon Golden Pipin 3.9% and Phoenix Hopsack 3.8%. All were very drinkable. Toilets, fully tiled out - looks like an abatoir!
23 Dec 2010 15:32
The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool
This is a pub I nearly always visit when in Liverpool, usually it is very busy and last night was no exception. Some of the ales on included Okells Bitter 3.7%, Cosmic Black Hole Brew 4.2%, Houblon IPA 4.2% and Box Steam Brewery Steam Porter 4.4% - all these were tried by my mates and me and all scored 4/5 on the CAMRA beer scoring method. Yes, we are the Real Ale Twats!
23 Dec 2010 15:26
Always a pleasure going to this pub, always visit when I'm in Liverpool. Had the Phoenix Wobbly Bob @6% which is a classic.
23 Dec 2010 15:16
In here after the brewery tour and had the Christmas Ale @4.7%. It was OK. The place itself was OK - would go back but only if happened to be in the area...and that is unlikely. If you want Cains go to Doctor Duncans.
23 Dec 2010 15:09
Very nice pub. I had Holdens Black Country Special Bitter @5.1%. My mates had a Salopian beer which is always good and hoppy. The Holdens was exceptional - very nice brew indeed. Will be back.
23 Dec 2010 15:05
Alright if you are in a hurry and about to get a train. Had 5 ales on when I was in I had the Youngs Gold Christmas Tale @4%, 1.95 pint. If you have more time then I'd advise left out the door down Renshaw St to the junction and you'll see the Dispensary on your left - better in there.
23 Dec 2010 15:01
Always make a b-line for this pub and it never dissapoints. Only 3 ales on yesterday and I had the Humulus Lupullus @4% which I believe is brewed on the premises, it was an outstanding pint. Also had a bowl of scouse which though expensive (6,50) was delicious.
23 Dec 2010 14:55
In here last night and usually come here when in Liverpool. Had the Rev James on (delicious) and 5 others. Great pub, very unpretensious.
23 Dec 2010 14:52
4 ales on when I was there, Duchars IPA, Caledonian 80/, Harviestoun B&T and Stewars Edinburgh Gold - I had the last one as I not seen it before - it was good and barman took sparkler off and topped up pint without me requesting he do so. Good mix of locals and tourists - good pub 8/10.
23 Dec 2010 14:46
Qirky pub on Royal Mile. Had 4 ales on when I was in Tass 80/, Deuchars IPA, Orkney Dark Island and Atlas Lattitude. Good mix of locals and tourists, Live music on Fri nights. Good pub 8/10.
23 Dec 2010 14:38
Sorry to hear about problems below - bad news. I was there September 2010 and my notes say it had several ales available (all Scottish except Spitfire) - I had Caledonian 80/. Good quality, busy, good craic with punters and people enjoying themselves. No problems.
23 Dec 2010 14:34
Great pub. 4 ales on and all Scottish. I had Caingorm Trade Winds and a Skye beer called Red Cullim which was awesome. Will be back Feb 2011.
23 Dec 2010 14:29
Busy pub with various ales @2.30 pint tho Deuchars is 1.65 pint. Good range of beer and the large scottish breakfast does set u up for the day as advised below. 7/10.
23 Dec 2010 14:26
Nice pub - had three ales on when I was there - Duchars IPA, Caledonian 80/ and Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted. I had the last one, it would not pour proper so the barman went out back and must o moved barrel as it came out cloudy. Cloudy beer don't bother me much and it tasted OK though not the best B&T I've ever had. 2.95 pint.
23 Dec 2010 14:22
A great bar, reasonable prices and good beer - friendly and not overcrowded. Will be back here in February.
20 Dec 2010 09:00
High quality - they love real ale so much here that they brew their own and sell it! Was at a beer fest August BH - great selection of beer - a great place - a must visit if you are in 'Boli'
13 Oct 2010 20:26
The Swan With Two Nicks, Little Bollington
Pub food...what a waste of time...always 'Brake Brothers'...and so girly!. Ale here tho was good - good selection of Dunham Ales, house brew was from Warrington brewhouse Coach & Horses. Ale of the night tho was the ever present Timmy Taylor Landlord - top notch.
8 Oct 2010 19:33
Good pub, with good ambience (hate that me...but most people like it!). Beer was good (Bombardier) and caht about how it's looked after was top - could do with trying some other ales, but understand that regulars are conservative in their tast. Will be back tho.
8 Oct 2010 19:19
Porter's Ale House, Warrington
Still 1.80 - beer improving after rocky period. Bob Rock on a Friday plays good tunes.
7 Oct 2010 19:57
Cannot believe the comments on here. I have nothing to add other than this is a high quality real ale establishment that does it's best to serve people quickly and politely and that MOST people do not give it the big un as suggested by some - get a grip FFS.
7 Oct 2010 19:53
The Riverhead Brewery Tap, Marsden
Second time here - good busy pub with everyone having a good time - lovely outside by the weir and the great topo sculpture...try and locate the pub! Beers we had were all from the on-site Riverhead and all good, included;
Butterley Bitter
March Haigh
Red Brook Premium
Galena IPA
Cupwith Special
7 Oct 2010 19:49
Friendly pub with good beer 3 we had in there include Millstone - Tiger Rut, Elland - Beyond the Pale and Copper Dragon - Golden Pippin all in good knick...mind the pile of 2p's on the bar...think it was 2p's...
7 Oct 2010 19:41
Decent boozer on the 'Rail Ale Trail' - had 4 ales on when we nipped in one was Hydes Ringmaster and one Holts Pioneer...these producers of Ale are so, so IMO. One of the other ales was Caledonian Mellow Yellow and the other I cannot remember, but it was non-descript compared to what we had elsewhere. I have been here before and range of beer was better.
7 Oct 2010 19:38
Had Spitfire on when we nipped in - a 'human' place...loud trance as well...thought it was ok.
7 Oct 2010 19:33
Excellent. 4 ales on when I went in on Weds lunchtime. The Magnum IPA brewed on the premises is the one I plumped for. Landlady ran wee bit off pipes before serving and advised that if beer not ok to let her know as it had been on a week - the beer was fine - couldn't understand why it had been on a week and not drunk - it was excellent and only 2.30 as compared to the more far flung English ales which came in at 2.65-2.75 depending on ABV. Pubs like this are a rarity outside big cities in Scotland.
11 Sep 2010 21:33
Went in lunchtime as fisherman had said they do B&B. They had an ale on (Caledonian Nectar) which tasted OK. But there was loudy girly music on from jukebox vid. The barmaid kindly filled my water bottle and I left. The Scottish Fisheries Museum on seafront is well worth a visit though.
11 Sep 2010 21:23
Friendly staff and locals - nice pub. The Deuchars IPA was off when I went in but Hydes - Summertime Blues was an alternative - looks like two ales is the norm though. The Hydes beer was OK.
11 Sep 2010 21:20
The Whey Pat Tavern, St Andrews
OK - staff seemed rushed off their feet and second time in had Orkney - Northern Lights...might be wrong but thought it had a twang to the taste which my colleague pointed out - I did'nt want to say anything out of respect...but it was there. Otherwise, friendly enough pub and reasonable beer range - not sure why GK IPA has to be house beer though!!?
11 Sep 2010 21:17
One of two pubs visited in St Andrews, this one on 3 seperate occassions and the other on two - the other pub is the Whey Pat Tavern. For selection of ales, staff appreciation of customers and ale and location, this pub wins hands down. If sunny, the chairs outside are a premium. The two best ales I remember both came from the Inveralmund brewery and wer named Tharppledouser and Lia Fail. Bit further down (two doors) is McGregoers coffee/haberdashery shop - excellent bacon rolls.
11 Sep 2010 21:12
Had two handpump ales on the go (Cairngorm - Red Ale and Deuchars IPA) and 1 handpump dispensing cider - other ales available in bottles at a hefty 3.60 if I remember correctly! Food looked good, but as noted before perhaps a little rich for some palletes...
11 Sep 2010 21:05
Aberlour - two pubs. One the Aberlour Hotel which was dreadful, the other The Mashed Tun which was ok, but a bit upper crust. Had one real ale on handpull (Cairngorm Wildcat 5.1%) which I sampled - reasonable. There were others available in bottles. My mate hade Miller in a bottle after being reliably informed that Tennents was the national drink of Scotland by a man with an English accent...get the picture?
11 Sep 2010 20:58
Nipped in here on start of Speyside Way walk on a Sat afternoon - the locals ripped into us straight away about how few miles we had done before having to go to the pub - interesting old bar with sound locals. No real ale, but good crack.
11 Sep 2010 20:37
A welcoming pub with friendly punters and in very nice area of Rochdale town centre - sit outside on a sunny day, it's great. As for the beer, there were about 5 Ales on. We went for the local brew of Phoenix Arizona and the Phoenix Mild that was on offer. Nice bunch of Northampton football fans in there as well - a good, solid town centre pub offering quality ale. Good meeting point before heading off to the game via Baum...
22 Aug 2010 09:12
Was in here after Dale v Col U match. It was a very atmospheric pub and seemed to be the life and soul of the area. It had the typical ales on offer e.g. Landlord, Black Sheep, etc. However, at 2.30 a pint it had a Boggart brew on - it was absolutely delicious and in perfect form. Best pint of the day for me.
22 Aug 2010 09:07
A fine real ale establishment. If in Rochdale, go out of your way to visit this gem. It had a Greenfield brew, a wheat beer from an Oldham brewery whose name slips me and Little Red Corvette from Kelham Island. There was also a 'lager' from Lakeland.
22 Aug 2010 09:03
Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchester
Been back since last comment - I will not be going back.
17 Aug 2010 13:10
The Smithfield Hotel, Manchester
I rate this pub - it's real and the selection of beer is great - thay had Old Tom on the other week! Must get back soon.
17 Aug 2010 13:08
The best pub I have been to in Manchester and the range of beer second to none - shame it's out of the centre cos when you're with peeps they whinge if you have to go to far and are mostly happy with keg...slowly but surely they're converting though!
17 Aug 2010 13:06
Good boozer, with six different ales on last night, four of which are brewed on the premises. Staff friendly, helpful and polite. Well worth a visit.
6 Jul 2010 09:55
The Old Ship Inn, Heybridge Basin
There at lunchtime today - they had two ales on, I plumped for the LocAle Maldon Gold - served OK, nothing special though. Had the Steak & Ale pie, it was homemade and good. This place appears to put most emphasis on food.
5 Jul 2010 16:53
The British Grenadier, Colchester
Had a pint in there Sunday - four ales available, proper pub, ale was good quality - great location. Pubs like this are historic and should be retained at all cost.
5 Jul 2010 09:42
Pretty much still the same as the comment below - friendly and the ale was in good order.
5 Jul 2010 09:39
was in there Sat for school re-union. Was concerned about this venue as I like real ale...thought I would be drinking the awful Guinness all night as compromise! Fortunately two hand-pulled ales available, Adnams Bitter and Shepherd Neame Spitfire, both were served OK and tasted OK. Place was fairly busy, quite a few eating and the bar served till 12 and moved us out about 12.30. Pleasantly suprised as these places normally make no effort with respect real ale.
5 Jul 2010 09:37
Went in this Saturday - it is a 'pub' again now - three handpumps with a Bombardier pump clip 'balancing' against one. Asked the barman for a pint of this and he looked at me quizically! Reiterated my request and he said he'd see what is in the barrel - it came out looking shocking - I bade farewell and left, never to return.
28 Jun 2010 20:05
Not sure what the problem is with punters below. Thought it was a friendly pub and the 7 ales were excellent - we tried 6 different ones and 2 of them were from local breweries (Phoenix and Coach & Horses). Nice beer garden and views over/along the canal. Serves food, but did not try - looks like it could be busy with canal boat users in summer - quiet when we were there. Well worth a visit for beer alone though.
25 Jun 2010 20:31
Had a couple of pints of a Phoenix beer in here about 5pm on Saturday - it was excellent. No issues with the bar staff - polite enough.
20 Jun 2010 21:41
Update - available this evening Hartleys Cumbria Ale 4.1%, Robinsonas Unicorn 4,2% and Robinsons 4-4-2 3.6%. All beers tested and all were OK - nothing special but adequate - open till 12 but 'locals' bar ( 4 or 5 person) busy everywwhere else empty - how long will this pub last?
18 Jun 2010 01:04
Had Ennerdale Best (think is from Whitehaven) - it was very nice. Also had the Ennerdale Stout on and others as well incl. Jennings Cumberland and Theakstons Old Peculiar and Black Sheep. Wish I could have stayed longer - worth a visit for the Ale.
16 Jun 2010 22:32
Great pub - good selection of Ale. Had the local Coniston Bluebird. Well worth a visit, if weather good has large beer garden with great views - interior looks nice too.
16 Jun 2010 22:28
The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale
ALL your pictures are of The Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel - this review is for the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and subsequent to that will be a review for the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel which as ciderchap advised is further (walkable distance) down the road near Elterwater, likewise the Sticklebarn. I will upload a picture of the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel and the rating is for the same.
Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel: enjoyed a Yates Best and 3 of Moorhouse Black Cat - all beer was excellent in particular the Black Cat. Ate here as well, adequate. Friendly atmosphere - an enjoyable pub, to tired to get lashed. About 2.60 a pint.
New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel: enjoyed 2 beers here Thwaites Wainright and Cumberlands Corby Ale - both were very good, in particular the Wainright. The Corby Ale is produced by a small brewery from Carlisle called 'Cumberland' and is not to be confused with 'Jennings'. Also ate here, had the homemdade chicken and leek pie with fresh veg, gravy and chips - it was excellent (the pie) and at 10.95 with a Wainright thrown in is reasonable for the location. The pie on it's own was 9.50 and the Wainright 3.15...which is a tad steep.
In summary - both Dungeon Ghylls (old and new) are worth a visit. The staff in both establishments are overworked and no doubt underpaid.
16 Jun 2010 22:22
Was not sure about this place until recent visit - quality of ale was very good. The Brass Monkey - Golden Monkey was excellent 2.70. Will be back.
13 Jun 2010 22:25
In here prior to Leftfield concert - had a pint of Thwaites Wainright 2.90. It was good and tasted like Wainrights I have had before - this place seems to manage it's ales well for such a busy place - fair play to it. Returned later and had two Cuba Libre which was expertly made with the minimum of coca-cola and maximum Havana Club Rum.
13 Jun 2010 22:22
Now selling real ale - 2 handpumps with Marstons EPA and Wychwood Hobgoblin both of which were well kept. Served up pasties as well free of charge. Friendly, clean pub - horse racing on 24/7.
13 Jun 2010 22:10
Remember it being busy, but friendly - quirky interior if I recall - the 1 Cumberland Ale I had was good.
13 Jun 2010 21:30
In here a couple of month ago with some colleagues - we ate, the food was OK, nothing remarkable though. The ale selection is the real reason I was there though - good selection of ales that I remember and dipped back in (as it was the best) after visiting a couple of other pubs.
13 Jun 2010 21:27
Porter's Ale House, Warrington
Recently lost their cellarman - quality has dipped - need to sort it out!
13 Jun 2010 21:21
Went here on Thursday night, four of us got a taxi over from Warrington. Concur with views below - had six real ales on, 3 of them from regional suppliers - the best of the evening being George Wright - Pipe Dream. The other beers were also very good, including Courage Best, GK Abbot Ale, Ruddles County, Six Bells Bursting Out and Bowland Pheasant Plucker.
13 Jun 2010 21:18
Nipped in for a couple prior to the Gill Scott-Heron concert - good selection of ales, reasonable price - for a place with a glass frontage it does seem very dark though - my companion mentioned that the ladies toilet was mingin.
2 May 2010 07:03
The Briton's Protection Hotel, Castlefield
Been in here a few times over the years - most recently a lunctime a couple of weeks ago - nearly always go for the guest ale and occ the Jennings Cumberland - no problem with the quality of the beer - bit pricy though - great characterful pub.
2 May 2010 06:58
Another great pub in Huddersfield - this place is about quality real ale.
2 May 2010 06:45
Great pub, quality selection of real ale, decor of pub good - nice and airy feel - good beer garden that get's the sun - well managed - well worth a visit.
2 May 2010 06:41
The Rat and Ratchet, Huddersfield
Came here before the Terriers v Colchester United game - they had 20 milds on and similar number of cider/perry's...needles to say we'd walked in on the 1st day of a mild, cider and perry fetival. Great pub.
2 May 2010 06:37
The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street
What I like about this pub is that for a change it's the ale pumps (Fullers pub full range available) that are to the fore and not the lager which are diddy little things by comparism - things are changing in the pub industry! Also, the painting (nay mural) on the wall of a non-plussed judge looking down on a loose dog in his court who's about to discover the judge's cat! The Beer - had London Pride...OK...had better. Would'nt mind a session in here one winter - much better pubs elsewhere for summer drinking.
22 Apr 2010 11:46
Went in here years ago and left my beer! Now, it has been taken over by a hardworking couple and their son I think - it's been running a couple of years and although a little expensive the quality of the beer is more than good enough as is the choice. The food is said to be good too - local boozer on edge of town next to smart looking church - could do more with the outside space round back - friendly.
19 Apr 2010 21:04
Proper pub, with decent beer at a comparatively reasonable price for what you get. I had Kelham Island ale (can't remember name!) but also had two pumps of Tetley Cask and another guest. Interior is interesting too. Worth a visit.
19 Apr 2010 20:59
The White Horse, Brancaster Staithe
Good friendly pub that gets the sun on the front in afternoons - was there last week and did a bit of walking along coast path - hot! As for the pub - real ale on offer, I had Brancaster Best which I was told is brewed for them by Iceni Brewery - it was very nice. Also own the Sailors down the road which is a bit different and equally good if not slightly better - both well worth a visit.
19 Apr 2010 20:52
The Jolly Sailors, Brancaster Staithe
Had a couple of pints in here and was tempted by the pizza's. The ale was Humpty Dumpty brewery offering - cannot remember nae but it was good - pizza good too. Friendl enough.
19 Apr 2010 20:49
A truly remarkable pub with excellent selection of ales and lagers and manay other types of beer - a must visit when in Norwich.
19 Apr 2010 20:45
In here last week on consecutive evenings - used to come here years ago. It has changed a little bit since, but no mass overhaul - had three CHB ales on and a couple of others - still a high quality friendly local boozer...just how I like em.
19 Apr 2010 20:42
The Willeymoor Lock Tavern, Tushingham
Great pub with great selection of real ales - hospitable and pleasant staff - good outside seating for summer months - all a pub should be.
6 Apr 2010 13:47
In here on Saturday (got fed up in Bickerton Poacher - no peace) - they offered 4 real ales and the one I had was in very good condition (can't remember name). The atmosphere was also good and the barman was making some interesting looking cocktails - could do with binning the imposing TV though. Lot's of potential here - good luck.
6 Apr 2010 13:45
In here Sat ureday for second time in a year - very fine ales served here - I had Phoenix Navvy which was ace and gone by time I went for second, had to settle for Old Eastgates by Weetwood. Deffo a place for the Cheshire set and prices to match 3.40 a pint of Ale. Food looks good but did not try - views outside are awesome on a good day.
6 Apr 2010 13:42
Not bad - ideally placed for those on Sandstone Trail and camping or B&B. As a pub for drinking it's a non-starter - impossible to relax! Inside the staff are charging around serving 'eaters' and the turnover is high so also customers buzzing about. Outside is play area with screaming kids - if your looking for a quiet beer - forget it. Real Ales - had 4 on but all from larger brewery's and non from local such as Weetwood or Dunham Massey, etc.
6 Apr 2010 13:39
Went into this pub for the second time in a year - very accommodating although being a Robinsons the beer range was limited - had the dragons breath or whatever it was - tasted OK but was not 'hot' like advertised. Still, the service was impeccable - barman came round with a platter of sausages, pork pies and quiche for all customers free of charge - it was not Brake Brothers either - quality ingriedients. 8/10...mostly for service, beer 5.5/10
6 Apr 2010 13:35
Well worth a visit at least before it dissappears of the radar - Tetley's is not a beer I rate that much, but it was cask in here and was well kept and suprisingly enjoyable - it can be done!! (take note other landlords). Staff and clientel very friendly. Would really love to see it carry on as a boozer.
5 Mar 2010 13:06
Solid local on corner of busy road just off Oldham Road - bit dark round back but the Ales are always well kept and the choice is pretty good - normally 5 or 6 - well worth a visit.
5 Mar 2010 12:55
Sinclairs Oyster Bar, Manchester
Smas Smiths pubs are normally good on price and quality of beer - both of these were in attendance here BUT...the Ale was served in plastic containers and some of the staff were very nonchelent about serving punters (esp the miserable barmaid who spoke to people like scum that's if she could be bothered to stop texting...sod off luv!!). The place also get very crowded (nay overcrowded) and the bogs are minging - the No2 has no lock...always the sign of a poorly run pub IMO.
5 Mar 2010 12:49
Mingin - girls are deffo back in force and are OK, but horribly dressed (or is that undressed) most of girls OK and will back off when asked politely. Beer range is pathetic though - best they had near to Real Ale was Newcastle Brown in tins - if you want girls and better vibe go to Browns, out door right and further down on same side.
1 Mar 2010 19:35
Tucked away off Kingsway - been a pub since 1549 it said on plaque outside. Looks bigger than it is from outside - friendly and good range of Real Ale - shuts at 11 on Saturday though.
1 Mar 2010 19:32
The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn
Big noisy pub - busy - beer range and prices good - typical JD
1 Mar 2010 19:29
Went in there for the Chelsea/Man C game and moreso for the 6 Nations Eng/Ire game seeing as the latter were 250-300 a ticket at Twickers!! Usual Fullers range and served in glass not plastic containers as in Crickerters next door - rammed and friendly and plent of people eating too - reckon it would be great with the Green in the summer - Fullers was top-notch (as it always generally is in London).
1 Mar 2010 19:16
Think this pub has been turned into a Thai restaurant - I'd check before you go there.
21 Feb 2010 18:11
Went prior to game against Colchester - 16 Ales on the go and 1 Cider - had Stout, Porters, Milds, Light and Dark Ales - good quality, would certainly go again.
14 Feb 2010 18:05
Visited for game against Colchester - Very friendly pub right near Edgely Pk - Robinsons Ales kept in good knick - let's hope County sort finances out as some great pubs around the town.
14 Feb 2010 18:03
I rate this place - it's like a tardis back in time, what a proper pub should be like. High quality ales and cider.
26 Jan 2010 12:47
Being done up - heard that JD is gonna move here and change the existing JD into a Lloyds - we wait to see, might bring more busines to this end of town.

Was in here a couple of weeks ago, one of our noemal crowd does'nt rate the place for some reason (bit snobish I reckon). Anyway, those that did turn up enjoyed some golden colled Ales from Geroger Wright Brewing Co and Moorhouses - all in good condition and at 1.59p a pint, excellent value. They also accepted the 50p off a pint CAMRA vouchers at one per round. 8/10

The Slug and Lettuce, Manchester
Our Xmas party was organised to be in this place (why here?) and I was dreading it as I scoped the place out before the date. Was kinda obliged if you know what I mean. They had no real ale but had handpumps that were turned around - bad start (or maybe good cos if thay had real ale it would probably be poorly kept as the bar staff looked clueless). Fortunatley the Guinness was OK and fortunatley we were getting table service so I did not have to q in the bar with the overloud shyte dance music and xmas jingles. To be fair - it was the food that I was most concerned about but it was OK as in edible. Not sure why the place is so popular though. Given it 0/10 for the beer and ambieance and 6/10 for the food, so overall 3.

Was there for the Lymm Xmas festival and although I am not a great fan of J W Lees Beer the Cristmas Cracker was absolutley top-notch.

The Bellhouse Club, Grappenhall
High quality real ales served in this establishment - very conservative. Has a beer festival everty year about May (I Think). Well worth a visit.

Think it's a Thai restaurant now - was good when it was a pub and sold Coach and Horses Dick Turpin all the time. Nice crowd in there too - wonder where they all gone - Porters?

OK in summer outside - serves only Lager (which 'tasted' OK) otherwise - dive!

Judging by the comments below it seems as if this place has turned it around a bit. Was in there before Xmas and they had 4 Real Ales on the go and the quality of the one pint I had (TT Landlord) was OK. There were however a few meatheads knocking about. Wheel154 - is possible to have an excellent pint of Carling?

Was in here last week - it's OK, nice interior cept toilets are scuzzy! Beer - Marstons Pedigree and Tetleys on cask. We drank Pedigree - it's OK but nothing to write home about - kinda leaves you with an anti-social sulphorus smell the next day. All in all pubs in SH are mingin!!

Mulberry Tree Hotel, Stockton Heath
Went in here when they had the Xmas Mkt - they had Bombadier on and it was OK - slow service though. Went back in New Year with some mates and all three hand pulls were off...and so were we!! Would you believe it, tried to tempt us back on way out with shout of 'we got John Smiths' - Losers!

Came back to test the water after JW takeover - We made a detour from our old tables round the back and planted ourselves in front of the bar in the shall we say European seating area  this was so we could keep an eye on activities in and around the bar. There were six real ales on offer (all J W Lees) and all of them were sampled by at least one RAT. The following is a summary of the beers and comments made;
Coronation Street amber colour 4.2% - not bad, good texture, reasonable flavour 6/10
JW Premium amber colour 4.5% - better than the bitter, good/enjoying it, alright 6.5/10
Gold Digger amber colour! 3.2% - looks goodbut, watery, no flavour 1/10
JW Bitter (award winning!) amber colour - 4.0% - watery, limited flavour, they somehow managed to remove flavour,,,, might as well have water,,, 5/10
Scorcher golden - 4.2% - slightly cloudy, good texture, no flavour 5.5/10
Game On amber colour 4.5% - good flavour 7.5/10
This gives an average mark of 5.25/10 for the beer served at the LB last night draw your own conclusions!

We used to frequent this pub every Thursday, it usually had 4-5 and sometimes 6 real ales - 3 of which were usually GK IPA, Directors, Bombadier, etc. It I noticed the beer getting poorer and poorer in 2009 and we dicided to bin it! Lo and behold, 3 weeks after binning it J W Lees took it over. It now has 6 J W Lees beers that all taste the same and are served in their dodgy glases that are moulded so your fingers sit in ridges. What a shame - Appleton Thorn Village Hall is our new home on Thursdays now.

Quality boozer - well dressed and well mannered bar staff/clientele. How a pub should be. Top notch beer. Micro opening soon I believe.

Now closed - Thank God. Use the much more salubrious Lower Angel a few doors into town on same side of street.

The Vernon Arms, Sudbury
passed this pub a few times and as it was hot day and I needed lunch stopped - the ham sandwich was good, with ham being off-the-bone. No local ale unfortunately but the Ringwood 49er was acceptable...garden nice and set back from the road. Interior looks interesting (must try in winter). Out back is Sudbury Hal Nursery if you need a few plants.
