15 of us landed there on Saturday lunchtime - there were 4 ales on, the two local Bridestones, Thwaites Lancaster Bomber and best of all the Worsthorpe Old Trout which was absolutely delicious. We ate here as well but the food was rubbish - though not bothered about that so much. All in all a decent pub

This pub has the grumpiest landlord around. Run by someone that doesn't really want to be there, it's about time he passed it over to another member of the family, but unfortunately his son doesn't want it. Renowned in the area for bring a miserable git - I had first hand unpleasant experience of the geezer a couple of months ago.

Admittebaly, it was a busy evening but it doesn't excuse the way I was spoken to by the nasty unpleasant landlord. Having gone into the pub to get me and my partner a drink - it was a cold evening and we were outside . I wanted a pint and my partner wanted a hot drink. Nothing wrong with that apart from the fact they don't do hot drinks - don't pubs like this ever move with the times! Anyway, I asked if I could get a glass of red wine with hot water in it (like a hot toddy or mulled hot wine). Didn't want much, just a glass of wine with some hot water from the kettle. Landlord said he couldn't do. I suggested he just put the kettle on for a couple of minute to boil a bit of water and I didn't mind waiting. He said it would take half an hour, so I replied "what, to boil a drop of water in the kettle that is directly behind you?". He said, "look mate, we don't do it ok" I asked politely again it would only take a minute, at which stage he took the glass of wine and proceeded to top it up with hot water from the tap ! Yes that is right, from the tap!!

I shouted, "hey, don't put water in it from the tap mate, that's not the way to do it and not a good way to treat your customers", he replied, "it's fine, I have a a clean hot boiler the water is fine" (in a gruff nasty manner), "whoa man, please don't do it" and he did. What's more, the water was not even luke warm, He ruined a 3 + glass of wine with shitty hot warm water from the tap. Not only that, he then snatched my 10 out of my hand before I had chance to demand a fresh glass or refuse to pay for it. Hence, at this stage I was so annoyed I actually swore at him and said he didn't didn't deserve to run a pub and suggested he get out of business, and that I would never go in there again.

Hence, he lost my custom, and the friends that I was with outside. First class ****!

I thought this may actually have been a one of incident but since heard that he is always a miserable old man to his customers, unless you are one of his pleb regulars !
Avoid this pub like the plague.

the beer range in such a rermote location has to be aplauded ,there was 4 real ales on 2 from the bridestones brewery.as well as a good selection of continetal lagers. it was fairly busy on a late sunday afternoon, and after a pretty srtrenues walk it was nice to relax with a locally brewed pint. i also noticed behind the car park there was a area for camping. pubs in remote areas are struggeling at these times so it was good to see the new delight bucking the trend.

Definitely agree that the choice and condition of the beer is excellent, especially the Bridestones which is brewed by the landlord's son. We certainly didn't expect to find 5 real ales and several lagers including Kaltenburg Hell in such a remote spot.
The landlord himself was on duty behind the bar when we were there and was perfectly welcoming.
The menu is good and includes lots of locally sourced ingredients: the meals we had were very good and reasonably priced.
The pub is very close to both the Pennine Way and Calderdale Way, making it an excellent refreshment stop on numerous walks over the glorious moorlands in this area.
The pub is a rare example of a community local surviving in a remote location and yet offering a better range of food and beer than many a city pub.

Firstly the beer was excellent.
The food was very average, but then again not too expensive.
However, the barman was about the rudest I have ever encountered. When my 2 mates and myself walked in the bar was empty, yet the barman couldn't even look up from his paper let alone give us a warm welcome. Once we'd decided on our drinks, we had ask him to serve us, which he did sullenly and with no enthusiasm whatsoever. I can only assume this bloke was a hired help rather than the landlord. No wonder pubs are going out of business. I really didn't want to give him my money, but we I was starving. I wouldn't go back through choice.
