Banker central this one, but as a Fullers pub at least you could get a decent beer, and the service was reasonably good as well for a city pub..

The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
New owners:yet again. Advertise Tapas but cant even spell it. Food is now ropey. They put dodgy sauce on all sandwiches without putting it in the menu.

The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
sounds more like a personal issue than a review of the pub..

The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
pubspy69 you are an idiot
the only truth in your rant is about george falling out with some of the locals - a fair point, but the rest of it is just fiction
the pint of Guinness in here is far far better than elsewhere in Sunbury - where on earth do you think it is better?
it's a proper pub - who gives a shit about the toilets - you shit in them.
if you want a fancy dan superficial rubbish pub serving crap drink then go to the Magpie or especially the Phoenix - leave the White Horse to people who actually like proper pubs
27 Jul 2011 21:20
The Inn on the Quay, Goodrington Sands
Not good. Only excellent thing is the location. Had a half decent beer as well.
Apart from that - Microwaved food, found a fly in the food. Lots of table staff but place was filthy (what are they all doing?) And this on an empty Monday lunchtime - hate to think what it is like when busy,,
27 Jul 2011 21:13
very fancy pub for food, not really a drinkers joint, but nice enough for a meal, if you go lunchtime you'll have to try to get a seat amongst the pensioners
28 Apr 2011 15:51
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
have had a refit of the refit - bit better than before, the outside is especially good now, so they will cream in the punters in summer I expect
28 Apr 2011 15:50
old fashioned pub, owner old school. definitely worth a visit, although personally am not that keen on Badger ales, a good pub nontheless
5 Mar 2011 20:32
not that impressed. Bit of a soulless joint. Full of people who weren't drinking. Bar staff very miserable. Pastries on the bar
poncy beyond belief
5 Mar 2011 20:31
The Prince Blucher, Twickenham
still an excellent pub, one of the best in Twickenham
26 Dec 2010 19:41
The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames
always seem to be too drunk by the time I get to this pub, so have never enjoyed a proper evening here. However, seems a real proper pub, always busy and a good atmosphere
26 Dec 2010 19:39
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
Lower Sunbury not Leeds? I love it - the way to justify being the most expensive pub in Sunbury,
I would point out that it is Lower Sunbury, not Richmond - as this pub is more expensive than Richmond,
Not a bad pub by any means, but the beer prices alone would send me elsewhere
26 Dec 2010 19:37
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
more new pub owners, and they are also giving the 3 fishes a very good go. The refit is excellent. Haven't tried the food. Jukebox and quiz machine are very good. I hope they succeed, loads of competition around Sunbury, but I like this pub.
26 Dec 2010 19:36
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
New owners seem to be giving this place a good go - the interior is still a bit hotel lobby, but the service has improved ten fold and the food is excellent.
Would definitely rate it the best pub in Sunbury for food without a doubt.
26 Dec 2010 19:34
The Angel in the Fields, Bond Street
A hidden find and seemed an excellent pub. The interior was classic old pub, and the prices staggeringly cheap
What is there not to like?
26 Dec 2010 19:32
has a sign outside suggesting they are trying to reopen it as a pub - no idea who would take this on though, needs loads of work..
7 Dec 2010 20:22
absolute disgrace that this is now a supermarket - A pikey Tesco at that as well
i'd have rather one of the other soulless pubs in Twickers had gone, eg. The Albany, Grand Union, Bear etc.
7 Dec 2010 20:14
The London Apprentice, Old Isleworth
the last review is correct about it being more of a food pub - having said that, I thought it a very good pub of that type, having gone in here for the first time in a decade, I'd definitely go back..,
7 Dec 2010 20:09
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
that last comment sounds suspiciously like a member of staff.
the refit has improved the place though - first impressions very good,
31 Oct 2010 21:22
was poisoned by the food the first time I came here - glad to say second visit recently was much much better, Food was good and beer as well - full of young trendy things with dogs and beards, but apart from that, seemed a good pub now
25 Sep 2010 11:45
seemed allright, very very busy with live music - barman was a bit dozy, but would be worth revisiting I feel
25 Sep 2010 11:44
yes it is expensive, but it is the nearest pub to the rugby ground so what do you expect?
went in after a long absence, on a non rugby day, still one of the better pubs in Twickenham if you can ignore the prices
22 Sep 2010 20:25
a real find, a welcome antidote to teh chain pub hell everywhere else.
good jukebox but is so small inside you might struggle to get in comfortably
22 Sep 2010 20:17
no frills and no great shakes, but nothing negative to report - a perfectly respectable boozer
19 Aug 2010 19:41
fairly pleasant pub with friendly staff and boondoggle on - recommended
19 Aug 2010 19:40
Went back in this pub after years. ironically, what annoyed me the last time I went in this pub was the fact that a decent old boozer had been refitted to look like a hotel.
Now it has been refitted again it seems, and I have to confess it seemed a bit better than I remember - let's not pretend though that the old pub was some sort of old world ye tavern, the refit before was crap, this one has just made it a bit nicer.
I'd like to visit again as this looked like an appealing place to spend an afternoon
29 Jun 2010 13:42
surprised it was still going, as this is stretch of road is that much of a pub graveyard that not even an All Bar One could survive, however went in for lunch recently and thought it quite agreeable
probably full of chavs in the evening, but overall, worth a visit
29 Jun 2010 13:28
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
looks a bit smarter now at last, so probably worth revisiting now under new owners..
29 Jun 2010 13:21
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
I can understand why people don't like the 3 Fishes, but I find it strangely calming.
The beer can sometimes be excellent, and it is a good location. Also has an excellent jukebox.
Just don't sit on the bar near the toilets, it stinks.
29 Jun 2010 13:18
The Rock Point Inn, Lyme Regis
as everyone else said, A prime location but the pub itself was shabby
29 Jun 2010 13:14
Lovely pub. Friendly staff, good drinks, the best I went to Lyme Regis
29 Jun 2010 13:13
More of a restaurant than a pub, but the food is top notch
29 Jun 2010 13:13
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
just to add to my previous comment, in actual fact the pub seems to have gone to pot - went in the other day, they had run out of most beers (including Guinness), there was no-one in the bar, Also having a child running around the bar after 10 is not right, even if she was something to do with the owner.
all in all A once good pub in danger of going under unless someone pulls their finger out..
4 Apr 2010 21:46
a very strange experience being in a pub where you are literally the only punter - the pub didn't seem that bad in itself, but felt slightly intimidated by that fact - good location though right in the centre of town.. and better than a crappy wetherspoons anyday
12 Mar 2010 15:51
lovely pub, incredibly cheap - how can this pub be cheaper than my local in Sunbury astonishes me. would definitely recommend a visit, only downside is it a pain to get to
27 Feb 2010 19:21
an OK Fullers pub in city land, can be a bit packed and is very open plan so not that cosy, but away from the rush hour is probably very nice
27 Feb 2010 19:19
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
now under new management which seems odd, considering how much money the old owner must have spent renovating it.
Went in and was still OK, the Pride was still excellent, food was nice, albeit from a smaller choice than before, A few little things I might change, but overall still seemed nice enough.
24 Feb 2010 16:25
The Weir Hotel, Walton on Thames
visited after a long absence and thought was excellent - very friendly service and beer was good..
16 Jan 2010 20:30
The Magpie has had it's long awaited refit and they have done an excellent job - managed to preserve what was good about the old pub, but looks and smells much nicer - well done.
Looked busier when I went in as well so must have done the trick. Some of the neighbours should perhaps take note of how to do a refit.
16 Jan 2010 20:28
The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames
went in here for the first time in years and was surprisingly busy
i feel like I should return for a longer visit, seemed allright
19 Nov 2009 16:36
The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
A fine pub, it stands out amongst the others in Sunbury for it's sheer old fashioned ness. Not to everyones tastes I understand. Old men, proper drinkers, Irish and sports fans welcome. Braying Henrys and wine drinkers not..
22 Oct 2009 10:30
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
A lesson in how a refit can go wrong, but whenever I go in is packed!! Maybe I am in the minority, perhaps the ploy of letting the pub fall apart and smell literally of urine made any sort of refit welcome.
I remember going in here a decade ago and it was a great pub. Theres nothing fundamentally wrong with it now, indeed if this was a mile up the road it would be the best pub by far, but I feel in comparison, it lags behind the other pubs in Sunbury. Plus the cost of a pint in here is more than Central London or Richmond!!
Concentrates on food, and civilised bad lager drinking couples, of which there are many so maybe a wise refit as they know their market impeccably! The garden is quite nice in the summer as well I guess.
22 Oct 2009 10:27
I still much prefer the Magpie to the overrated joint next door.. I do worry though that it is going to be ikea-ed up/closed/ruined, as it does appear to be a bit under invested.
Dark and dingy in places, but I like that - I don't like going into a pub and feeling like I am in a dentists chair (like next door)
There is a mythical upstairs bar of the pub as well that no-ones ever been in.
Plus a quiz machine, the only one in any of the Sunbury pubs
22 Oct 2009 10:23
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
not a bad pub - quite old fashioned but that is good these days..
16 Oct 2009 16:45
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
Dying trade? Only in badly run pubs
Commuter belt? Money draining? What on earth are you on about?
maybe address the facts in the post rather than irrationally post nonsense abuse. All of the things I criticised can be addressed for free - no cost to the owner whatsoever.
read the facts - I said there is nothing massively wrong with the pub, I wonder why someone running a pub wouldn't put in a bit of work for free to fix the obvious things wrong with it, rather than swearing at people on websites.
16 Oct 2009 16:44
The Dolphin Tavern, Bloomsbury
thought briefly this was a gay pub when I went in
Seemed slightly odd, but the barstaff were very friendly and the pub grew on me - would return for another visit
16 Oct 2009 16:28
Looks very fancy these days - and much improved I would say.
30 Sep 2009 16:30
looking a bit tatty out the back these days. Still like it, but could do with a little TLC..
30 Sep 2009 16:30
The Jubilee, Sunbury on Thames
a better pub than I went in last time - still fairly average though
and better than the Jockey
23 Sep 2009 15:08
Never been in this pub despite being in the area for years
Gave it a go for the first time recently- on the plus side, the staff were very friendly, and I had a very nice pint.
On the negatives, on a not that hot a day, it is off putting when fat male chavs with tattoos sit with their shirts off in the pub. Not the pubs fault though.
Overall, wouldn't be top of my list for Sunbury pubs, but was allright.
23 Sep 2009 15:04
an old fashioned pub, but a welcome one, good to see a normal 70's pub still intact.
reliably informed that this is a Spurs pub so Gooners beware
3 Jul 2009 09:38
a nice vibe in this pub, seemed a bit studenty, but has a bit of character
3 Jul 2009 09:35
I actually had a nice time here despite the terrible reviews - I suspect that might have more to do with the fact that I was absolutely hammered, but still..
3 Jul 2009 09:34
a well hidden back street pub, but well worth visiting. a proper pub
3 Jul 2009 09:33
A nice enough pub tucked out of the way. Not good that they ran out of Youngs, baring in mind it is a Youngs pub you would think they would have some in reserve.
However, got served quickly and the pub seemed popular and worth a visit if you are in this hidden bit of London
3 Jun 2009 13:12
I saw Ghostbusters in here back in the 80's - wheres the cinema gone??!!
25 May 2009 12:45
As seaside pubs go, this is a fairly good one i think - Birds out the back (the feathered variety) for the kids also
25 May 2009 12:44
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
if you get served by the eastern european guy behind the bar, that is just his manner with everyone - he is quite abrupt
I can understand why people would find it a bit "local" - but it's ok really
15 May 2009 20:50
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
trying hard?
The back room used to be laid out immaculately. Now there is a tatty old couple of sofas in there, the long list of excellent food is gone, and there is crap lying around.
There used to be a quiz machine. This is now turned off
There used to be a well kept garden. Now covered in weeds and all sorts of crap left around the edges.
They are forgetting the basics! Nothing much wrong, but a little common sense would go a long way..
15 May 2009 20:45
Full of Polish people, you would think you had wandered into a pub in Staines rather than Eton. However, it has a certain dingy charm
4 Mar 2009 13:41
This is how I imagined an Eton pub would be like - overpriced, wooden floors, snooty looking babes wearing clothes far more expensive than my entire wardrobe
The pint I had in here was very pleasant to be fair, so it's not a bad pub
4 Mar 2009 13:40
Funny pub the Sun. I love rugby, and you get a decent pint in here, but I can't agree about the atmosphere, I always find it a bit sniffy towards those they perceive (incorrectly sometimes) as non regulars. could do better
4 Mar 2009 08:33
a decent pub, some of the regulars a little scary (pit bulls always make me nervous) but it seemed a proper pub
4 Mar 2009 08:31
The George and Devonshire, Chiswick
Excellent beer, as you would expect from a pub literally spitting distance away from the brewery. Some interesting prog rock on the stereo as well.
a good pub
4 Mar 2009 08:30
Mawson Arms/ Fox and Hounds, Chiswick
A fine pub - excellent service, perhaps Fullers reserve the pub on their brewery for the best staff but still, excellent.
4 Mar 2009 08:29
service for food not that fast but was nice. Can we revert back to serving food on plates rather than boards though, that is just silly.
It's a nice pub though, great location, I would come back.
22 Dec 2008 09:05
The Hog in the Pound, Bond Street
bit of a tatty joint, filled with a mixture of tourists, drunk office workers and chavs.
22 Dec 2008 08:59
my experience of this pub is positive - a surprisingly good pub considering it's location, where most of the pubs tend to be soulless, I thought the service was very friendly and helpful, they had good beer on draft and a quiz machine.
All in all , a nice surprise.
22 Dec 2008 08:55
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
erm, and Pride as well as Brakspear? Maybe it was off.
I agree the refit went too far, but it's still OK, and compare the pubs in Lower Sunbury to the dreadful ones in Feltham and Ashford.. It's an Oasis of good pubs!
4 Dec 2008 20:26
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
what rubbish - the reason local pubs are failing is because of the arrogant dismal service you get from the staff.
I will support local pubs, just other ones than this one.
4 Dec 2008 20:25
terrible service - I finished up pouring the pint myself, no-one battered an eyelid.
4 Dec 2008 20:23
The Duke of Cambridge, Twickenham
Went in here recently for the first time in years.. Enjoyed the front room vibe. And everyone turning round to look at you when you go in. Having said that, it's not all bad, and preferable to say, the Admiral Nelson..
25 Aug 2008 20:25
pants - yet another good pub ruined by some brainless corporate whores..
25 Aug 2008 20:13
Another identikit refit.. another Richmond pub loses any character whatsoever..
25 Aug 2008 20:10
By the way, check out mpw246pf's review of the Marlborough as well - clearly they fancy themselves as a pub restaurant critic ala Michelin star inspector, rather than the awkward bugger impossible to please customer that they are..
25 Aug 2008 20:08
I ate in here and was on the toilet for a day afterwards.. Wige also ill. Avoid.
25 Aug 2008 20:07
I wouldn't bother eating in this pub - Some of the food is rubbish beyond belief. Go in on a Sunday and you may as well be in a creche considering the number of kids in here.
For a midweek or evening drink though you'll be OK, the staff are friendly enough and the Youngs is good in here - so not all bad then..
25 Aug 2008 20:05
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Lovely photo of the pub - makes it look like a charming country joint, rather than the hell hole it is..
25 Aug 2008 20:03
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Couldn't disagree more with the last review - Yes, the ambience has gone a bit hotel bar, but the positives are very good food, good service and definitely one of the best pints in Sunbury, so they know how to change a barrel.
4 Aug 2008 19:59
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
That last comment was so full of inaccuracies I don't where to start:
"The staff are always polite and friendly" - Not true, the exact opposite!
"Speak English unlike the Flower Pot" - Nice racist comment - They seem to know about customer service in Poland though?
"the same staff (Unlike the 3 Fishes) - I'd rather have different staff than the same old miserable git being rude to you" - read ALL the comments below
"The food has never let me down in the 4 or so years i've been drinking there" - When it finally arrives, you may be right
This pub is not all bad, and compared to many say, up the road in Feltham, is a million times better - But it used to be the best in Sunbury and has gone to pot, thanks to the owners taking their eye off the ball and neglecting customer service and general upkeep of the pub.
28 Jun 2008 09:36
Surprisingly good pub tucked away behind Holborn tube station, good ales and not full of mentalists like many other local pubs.
28 Jun 2008 09:30
Never used to like it in here, but after having Children, all of a sudden I see the appeal.. A decent pub for a meal for sure.
26 May 2008 20:28
Went back in here after a very very long absence - I hated it before, but to be fair it has improved, and although not necessarily a pub I would go out of my way to visit, I feel it is fair I should give it some praise for the improvement.
26 May 2008 20:27
An allright pub.
By the way - why does BITE have continual pop ups now? Cut it out lads
29 Apr 2008 22:07
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
I'd second the comment below, the pub has been transformed, clearly a lot of money has been spent, and far more customers in there than they ever had before. The garden does look very impressive, and will be very popular in the summer. The Magpie will lose out bigstyle. They
The inside is disappointing though, they seem to have gone to the same identikit pub interior company that also did the Flowerpot. When will people realise that it is the carpets, jukebox, pool table etc. that make a pub more homely?
22 Mar 2008 10:15
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Flower pot is now revamped and open for business. It's a definite improvement on the last refit, although I prefer the decor 2 refits ago now, when it was more traditional.
However, I can't blame the landlord as he must be making double the takings. It's been well done and the staff are always friendly, definitely the best pub to eat in Sunbury, especially now the Admiral Hawke is being run into the ground..
3 Jan 2008 22:04
Ye Olde Watling, Mansion House
not a bad pub, but the staff have no idea how to serve - had a few guinnesses, all short poured. avoid
21 Dec 2007 19:07
a bit soulless in here, has a great location, but had a bit of a wetherspoons feel to it.
Liked the blankets provided for customers outside though.
20 Dec 2007 13:51
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
baffingly seems to be getting run into the ground - why I know not as used to be a great pub, now getting increasingly tatty and empty
16 Dec 2007 22:09
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
I can assure the earlier poster that I go to this pub and am not related to any of the other customers and/or staff!
I admit to being baffled by the staff turnover as there seems to be someone different behind the bar every time I go in, but the pub seems OK to me!
4 Nov 2007 08:43
Why is this place rated so low? A lovely pub in excellent surroundings and the food was allright as well!
27 Aug 2007 18:59
I liked it here, full of men with nordic beards, good quality drinks, worth visiting
29 Jun 2007 11:58
Truckles of Pied Bull Yard, Bloomsbury
Not impressed. Advertises on it's windows as purveyor of wine and ales, they sell virtually no beer, bottled lager is your lot.
Service was quick though so I'll give them that
29 Jun 2007 11:57
The Park Lodge Hotel, Teddington
Visited again after a long absence and enjoyed it again, very much.
22 Jun 2007 13:28
An odd pub, with a French restaurant on the side and a more normal pub on the other side. The pub side was allright I thought, a nice pint and quite comfortable, so I would definitely recommend a visit.
Barmaid was fit as well.
22 Jun 2007 13:28
The William Web Ellis, Twickenham
High prices and dress codes at Wetherspoons?
Don't think many people will be going here anymore!
19 Jun 2007 13:11
clearly staff leaving some of the last comments, sounds like a sales pitch. if they have managed to get some staff who can actually serve you properly in here it might be worth going in again...
17 Jun 2007 22:09
went past and the car park was full of gents with crewcuts and england jerseys - full marks for trying to put a more up market pub into feltham, but i fear you are doomed to failure..
17 Jun 2007 22:08
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Heard a rumour that it is closing - pity the running horse when all the regulars go there instead..
17 Jun 2007 22:04
The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street
Seemed a very ornate pub, quite agreeable really
20 Apr 2007 14:08
The Ferryboat Inn, Hayling Island
STOP SHOUTING SEAMAN YOU IMBECILE
Good location for this pub, not entirely sure about it though as it seemed a little rough round the edges - was put off eating here by the dirty state of the chef.
Would need another visit to be sure, but as it is virtually in France, might be tricky.
18 Apr 2007 20:52
Great pub, traditonal footy pub, if you are watching the Bees go here rather than the crappy Royal Oak, service far superior and lesss nicotine encrusted
15 Apr 2007 22:20
The Hare and Hounds, Sunbury on Thames
Has now been tarted up and is a vast improvement on a couple of years ago, although basically anything short of shutting the pub would have made it better than a couple of years ago.
Used to be inferior to the Running Horse but is now definitely better by a long way.
12 Apr 2007 12:04
Went in here for the first time in years and enjoyed the experience. Service seems to vary, if you get the guy he is incredibly friendly, if you get the girl she is very sour faced.
However, as a summer traditional pub this is excellent, although it suffers from being in the Oasis that is Charlton Village.
12 Apr 2007 11:56
Was called "The Bugle" about 5 years ago when it had paying customers. 2 pointless refits later, it is the Bugle again!
12 Apr 2007 11:55
The William Web Ellis, Twickenham
Pointless refit, it was a Wetherspoons before, who do you think owns the Lloyds No.1 name?
Alright for a cheap pint on Rugby days but I laugh at the comical Rugby day ker-ching cashing in of the new name of this pub - will it fool any passing Rugby fans who think they will be going to a proper Twickenham rugby pub? I bet it does..
12 Apr 2007 11:39
Never went in the pub when it was the Fulwell Arms, sounded more my type of joint then. However, the place is OK now as long as you bare in mind it is more of a restaurant-pub than proper pub.
If you go in for that purpose, then it is very nice - the food is good and the service was first class, the best I remember in a pub for a long time. They also have a beer menu with loads of Belgian beers which is a nice touch.
Therefore I would recommend coming here for a meal and a few drinks, probably not for a drinking session or a quiet pint.
12 Apr 2007 11:32
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
I like this pub but the grey haired old fella who I presume is the landlord sometimes acts as if he has never run a pub in his life and has just wandered in. A rude man. A very funny idea on how to give off a friendly vibe, a shame as the food is excellent and it is a good pub.
7 Apr 2007 21:14
More of a restaurant than a pub, the food was very nice but I wouldn't recommend coming here for a nights boozing unless you were old.
7 Apr 2007 21:10
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
The Phoenix probably used to be my favourite pub in Sunbury, but now is incredibly tatty. I know the building is old etc. and probably needs a fortune spending on it, but some of the other faults, such as the weeds and fag butt infested garden, could be fixed without any great expense.
The Guinness in here is still good mind.
1 Apr 2007 20:48
Not really my cup of tea usually. However, went in to eat on a saturday lunchtime and it was very pleasant.
31 Mar 2007 18:23
Depends what you are drinking.
OK, "The best pint of Guinness in Feltham"
29 Mar 2007 12:38
Surprised at the low ratings for this pub - I thought it OK, although the service was eccentric at times..
12 Mar 2007 18:27
Hundred House Hotel, Great Witley
The only bar in Great Witley is to be found at this hotel. The bar has all the life of a mortuary and the decor is drastically in need of an upgrade.
Service was friendly though, but I wouldn't really recommend coming here for a drink, even with the lovely scenary outside.
28 Jan 2007 21:17
A staggeringly good pub, almost perfect. Great ales and ciders, food is sublime. This is the quintessential English pub, out of 400 odd pubs I've rated on this site I'd even say this is the best I have ever been in...
If only I could find pubs as good near London! Ah well, never mind..
28 Jan 2007 21:14
Apparently a Camra recommended pub, the Pilgrim had all the atmosphere of a hotel lobby, although to be fair it was a Sunday night which might not be the best time to visit.
Didn't convince me though that there is a decent pub in Caterham - but it is better than the Surrey Hounds one nearby..

The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
Technically my local now, although I have been in here in passing a few times in the past, I have to say I quite liked it in here when I went in recently - Service was very friendly and I like the right hand side of the bar - it felt quite cosy.
So all in all, seems a good pub these days
7 Jan 2007 19:28
Now done up very fancy, it's not at all like it used to be here. I actually much prefer the decor now as the old place had all the ambience of a hotel foyer, it's much nicer now.
Service was friendly, I get the impression they eager to attract new customers. Food was very tasty, although not cheap. I can see this place being successful though. Not sure I would spend an evening here drinking, but it is nice enough.
1 Jan 2007 22:24
Against my better judgment, went back in here and nothing went wrong! Hooray! I'll up my rating a couple of notches then.
27 Dec 2006 15:52
The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
A funny type of pub, the Porterhouse looked like a touristy/All Bar one type joint from the outside. I am always suspicious of pubs that have bouncers on the door constantly - Usually this means I do not visit the pub.
Inside it is dark and cavernous but and this is the plus point, the choice of beers is extraordinary. This in itself promotes the Porterhouse from being just another touristy central London pub with gorillas on the door into somewhere I would actually contemplate spending an evening in. Therefore, worth investigation.
27 Dec 2006 13:46
The Opera Tavern, Covent Garden
Nice enough pub, for tourists and theatre goers, as such you would never ever ever come here for a night out unless you were planning on a theatre visit.
However, as a pre-show drinking venue I would recommend it completely.
27 Dec 2006 13:44
If I am going in a pub I want served quickly and efficiently, not to make friends with the bar staff.
Go on a training course or something, then you might realise why this place is always emptier than all the other pubs nearby. A shame as this used to be a classic joint back in the day before the numerous refits.
23 Dec 2006 11:29
The fancy decorations are beginning to look a bit worn - Another refit from Ikea is due I feel.
Got served pretty quickly though, but the Guinness is a bit ropey. A place to go for the laydeez me feels
23 Dec 2006 11:28
Was too expensive and always empty so they did a "refit" which seemed to involve moving the bar.
Now it is empty and too expensive - Why bother? This road is a bit of a restaurant graveyard and this place is going to be signing in soon..
23 Dec 2006 11:27
The Prince Blucher, Twickenham
Can't wait till they ban smoking - this is a nice pub, but I feel like I have smoked a 20 pack after every visit..
23 Dec 2006 11:25
A much improved pub, the live music seems to work much better in here than it did in the old Hobgoblin.
23 Dec 2006 11:24
The Prince of Wales, Twickenham
Very nice pub, one of the better ones in Twickenham, not as smoky or full of pissed up chavs.
All in all, a positive drinking experience
23 Dec 2006 11:22
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
Ate in here the other day and the food was as good as it used to be - so would definitely still recommend.
Service v.friendly also.
19 Dec 2006 13:19
Used to be one of the best pubs in Richmond, now a Youngs version of All Bar One. Sad
7 Dec 2006 13:36
Hope to god Youngs don't ruin this pub like they did with the Orange Tree - I just could not bare it
7 Dec 2006 13:33
I would say this is one of the best pubs in Richmond - I've never been disappointed after having been here. And the comedy club upstairs is worth a visit.
7 Dec 2006 13:31
The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames
I like this pub - cosy. Beers good in here as well. Always full of plod as it is next door to the cop shop.
6 Dec 2006 19:12
I never used to like the Magpie. but I've changed my mind - It's actually pretty good nowadays.
Even the food is edible now as well.
6 Dec 2006 19:10
An allright pub, definitely a locals one and if you knew the history of some of the locals, you would tread a little carefully with some. Most used to drink in the Nelson before it turned into a Chav infested sewer.
the Guinness in here is by far the best in the area.
29 Oct 2006 17:59
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Building works have now finished it appears - Has improved slightly to be fair, more like the pub it used to be before they started the "refit"...
15 Oct 2006 19:40
The first ever bungalow pub I have been in, was incredibly hot, but seemed popular with the locals, and on a colder day, perhaps worth a visit. Or invest in some aircon people.
23 Sep 2006 08:38
Was OK, although I preferred the pub next door, this one is also definitely worth a visit.
23 Sep 2006 08:36
A Sam Smiths pub that was an unexpected find. Was full of tourists, far more than the usual Sam Smiths outfit.
Was OK, but there are better SS pubs in the centre.
17 Sep 2006 11:15
a grotty disappointment, felt like one of those crap pubs you get in Railway stations. Soulless.
17 Sep 2006 11:13
Beaten to it by the last reviewer, this is a grotty pub full of people thinking it is 1995 and with it. Not a good pub in any way.
17 Sep 2006 11:12
A great find, an excellent pub. Good atmosphere, and the landlord turned off the TV to let the jukebox be played, always a sign of a class boozer
17 Sep 2006 11:08
A great pub, seemed to be run by a couple of Goths, but their taste in music seemed good when I was in there - The Doors, Waiting for the Sun - nice.
It's not pristine like an All Bar one, but it's by no means tatty
8 Sep 2006 13:14
Quite a pleasant pub in an area where you are spoilt for choice for good pubs
8 Sep 2006 13:13
Anonymous, if your daughter is as thick as you I am not surprised people are rude to her - Go back and read my last comment again and perhaps you will note what the point of customer service is..
4 Sep 2006 13:08
dreadful dreadful Pub - On a par with the Nelson for chavness, with the added bonus that they employ young chavs behind the bar as well who clearly have no idea what they are doing and would rather be somewhere else.
Glass collecting - none existent. Plus I had a load of girly blokes at the bar going on about their tinted eyebrows - Ponces.
3 Sep 2006 20:25
Fabulous pub - Guinness is second to none and atmosphere great. Not sure if the old Irish lady still works here, but she should train the young Irish guy behind the bar to recognise who is next in line for a drink - He is pants at this.
27 Aug 2006 20:58
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Less is more TeeKay, less is more.
Flowerpot has the best food in Sunbury, and is the only pub in the area that I know of that serves the bowel shatteringly good Addlestones Cloudy Cider - Why they serve this potent brew here I have no idea but good on you fellas and keep it up.
27 Aug 2006 20:54
I would say most definitely not a microwave menu. Full of middle clarses in their chelsea tractors with their dominics and stephanies.
Not a bad pub actually despite my inverse snobbery. Staff were friendly, service very good, food paltry in portion but tasty.
27 Aug 2006 20:44
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
Judging by TeeJays comments I think I am being stalked..
21 Aug 2006 16:13
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
Get over yourselves people, this is a site for reviewing pubs - by being so over-defensive you make yourself look stupid.
My opinion counts for no more than anyone elses so I would recommend anyone to visit the pub for themselves and make up their own mind.
21 Aug 2006 16:08
She's right about the beer you know - Best pint in Feltham in this pub..
21 Aug 2006 16:01
Keith Moons old local back in the day (see his excellent Biography, "Dear Boy" for many stories involving this actual pub)
Went in and it is a nice country type old pub. My only slight gripe was the barmaid was a bit miserable, which wasn't that welcoming, but it might have been a one off so I'll give her the benefit of the doubt. Seemed an allright pub though.
18 Aug 2006 10:47
What an odd comment from Anonymous - Why would I want to sit in the garden? You have to accept that the pub might not be to everyones tastes. Rather than just general negative comments care to address the actual downsides of the pub, such as the crap bar design, general tatty state etc.?
13 Aug 2006 17:31
This is a great pub - nothing fancy, just does the basics really well - Serves good drinks, is clean, feels traditional and an excellent jukebox.
The kind of pub I would be happy sitting in for an afternoon.
How would I cope living in Teddington if I had to choose between here and the Abercorn Arms? 2 great pubs within walking distance!
13 Aug 2006 17:28
As it had "changed" thought I would give it another go.
Basically the same flea-incrusted, smokey hell hole populated by toothless old gits that it was before. Except as it is not a Witherspoons you pay more for the privilege. Service crap as well.Avoid.
4 Aug 2006 09:27
I used to like it here more as you could get decent grub, but went in the other day and the menu had been reduced to basically 3 main courses, which call me picky, is not much.
Odd, as it was nice how it was before. Drank up and went to the UpnUnder to eat instead, which to be fair was even worse.
4 Aug 2006 09:25
"Closed for refurbishment" which is quite comical as the place was new and didn't need refurbing.
What it should say is "Closed due to charging 20 for steak driving away all customers"
4 Aug 2006 09:22
For the staff person who left their comments.. You've completely missed the point.
This is a website rating pubs, and if a pub is not worth visiting because of crap service then it is worth mentioning. Whilst you may do your best, if it invokes the reaction that it has on so many customers, you should leave a service based industry.
Plenty of other pubs manage not to piss off their customers completely, so it is not a case of "seeing it from your side" - It is a case of not putting up with crap service full stop.
3 Aug 2006 12:51
It's a bit pointless bar staff defending their pub on here because a) It's obvious and b) it won't make any difference anyway
Most discerning drinkers would avoid this Chav-Hole and go to one of the many nice pubs in Twickenham. I have no problem with the Sorting Room, it keeps the brain dead chavs out of the other pubs I like going in. Long may it continue!
3 Aug 2006 12:43
Seems rather a pleasant pub, although it does seem a "Go to eat on Sunday lunchtime" type of outfit. I thought it OK though.
31 Jul 2006 12:54
Ate in here and the service was overwhelmingly friendly - would fully recommend a visit..
30 Jul 2006 12:01
Seems a nice enough pub, although the large barman underfilled my pint of Guinness twice - he really should learn how to pour a pint properly.
Did feel a bit like a hotel bar though.
30 Jul 2006 12:00
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
I worry about the Admiral Hawke. Traditonally one of the better pubs in the area with a great menu, on my last few visits there has been something wrong each time. There was my last comment below, then last time I got a pint of Warm Guinness which was meant to be extra cold.
The menu appears to have gone a bit Flowerpot as well - The old menu was perfectly OK and hit the spot, no need to get delusions of granduer...
It's still OK, but not as good as it used to be
29 Jul 2006 10:07
I like this pub but they should take care and tidy the garden up a bit - in the back bit I was almost up to my knees in fag butts- it was like being in a pub in Feltham.
26 Jul 2006 13:34
I like your reviews TeeJay, good work fella. Have to disagree with your comments about this pub though - In theory, it should be what you say but for the appalling service I have had on 3 consecutive visits. Chronically understaffed, and rude at that, possibly because they are understaffed..
21 Jul 2006 13:42
A first for me - A nice pub in Staines. Arrived by boat and it was very pleasant, although the view was slightly spoiled by the chav bars over the road.
Anyhow, I thought this was an excellent pub.
21 Jul 2006 13:28
A nicely laid out pub with a massive beer garden - apparently the only beer garden in Poole.
16 Jul 2006 18:35
Not quite sure why I came in here, but felt like I was intruding on someones front room.
Having said that, credit where its due, the service was friendly. I suppose as this pub is located in Poole High street, which seems like some sort of weird stuck in the 80's decrepit mess with loads of fat chavs thrown in must rub off on the pub - Not their fault though.
16 Jul 2006 18:27
From the outside, this looked like my ideal kind of pub - olde stylee, traditional type of thing. Was a bit let down by the number of chavs in there and they also seem to employ a number of staff, including the landlord, who have no idea what drinks they sell! A quite bizarre experience..
Probably better in the day
16 Jul 2006 18:25
It's called "Hectors House"
Seemed like one of the better pubs on the front, not as rough and some lovely furniture.
16 Jul 2006 18:24
Full of crazy people when I went in, women of all shapes and sizes wearing little, people arguing and some of the worst karoake I have ever heard - Honestly, who would perform Iron Maiden in Karoake?
16 Jul 2006 18:23
I didn't think this place was that bad, but was put off slightly by some of the other patrons. Firstly a drunken old man called Brian decided to dribble at me in the gents, followed by shaking hands (I think it was hands)
Then outside, some annoying bint was going on about bacteria in your fingernails being lethal and having "snake like" hips - Which might have been true, but this was slightly marred by her 80's haircut, which a lot of the ladies in Dorset do seem to have.
Anyway I digress - The pub wasn't that bad so I would recommend stopping off on any quay pub crawl - Just watch out in the toilets.
16 Jul 2006 18:22
I enjoyed this pub, didn't meet any angry landlord, the woman behind the bar seemed friendly so I'm not complaining!
Attractive green outside as well - Like a giant toilet but in a good way
16 Jul 2006 18:19
Seems an OK type of pub, certainly not as bad as the first reviewer makes out.
16 Jul 2006 18:18
Probably one of the worst pubs on the Quay. It's not terribly bad in itself, only it is always packed and it is a Wetherspoons, so apart from the prices, I would go to one of the others.
Plus it would help if the foreign barmaids in here actually served what you asked for
16 Jul 2006 18:17
Stayed here and found it in a ideal location and the rooms were fairly priced, and in good condition. The pub itself is OK too, would recommend visiting either.
16 Jul 2006 18:15
I always got a bit put off from going in here as it looked a bit rough from the outside. How wrong could you be? Inside it was a revelation! A really really quirky good pub.
Stay off the psychedlic beer though otherwise you might see field mice in the garden as one punter was
9 Jul 2006 12:12
Called The Longford now, not the Stonehouse. Bit too poncey for my liking, and they serve your food on a wooden board - use plates for christs sake.
9 Jul 2006 12:09
Not too many frills in here, but I like it nonetheless. The service was very friendly. If you like a traditional no frills pub then this is worth visiting. If you like All Bar one then maybe not.
9 Jul 2006 12:08
Duke of Clarence, Hampton Hill
An OK pub - Has some stiff competition, but is a pleasant enough stop off
9 Jul 2006 12:07
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
What the hell has happened here? The Running Horse used to be a well run, if slightly rough round the edges, acceptable boozer.
I know they are having building work done, but that doesn't excuse the total breakdown inside the pub - Chairs scattered randomly, old drinks left for hours on tables, half the bar covered in empties, bar staff throwing your change at you. I do hope this is temporary, as it stands at the minute, is the grottiest pub in the area, by some distance.
7 Jul 2006 11:16
My new favourite pub in Teddington. The Abercorn Arms is easily missed, hidden away from the other pubs in the area, indeed I stumbled across it by accident.
It's a Youngs pub, and is incredibly like a traditional proper pub. One side of the bar is full of old regulars, the other side has a pool table and dartboard, and there is a little garden. Service is excellent. It's not cheap, but I don't mind paying a little more for a nice drinking experience like this one.
7 Jul 2006 11:11
OK, I slagged this place off before but have been back in for another go.
It did stink last time, but fortunately it didn't smell too bad now - Ate and it was fast and OK. I'd say it's about the same as the Old Bill, acceptable place to go for a beer and food at lunchtime, bit Chavvy and chain bar-esque in the evening for me.
One annoying thing though - Don't give me my change on a bloody tin tray - it is very pointless
23 Jun 2006 16:46
Wow famous people! Thats a reason to go to a pub, I don't think. How pathetic.
I think Angelina is staff judging by her comments, so her praise doesn't count. It's not a bad pub though, but the priority in a pub should be the service and atmosphere, not the concentrating on being so called "trendy"
19 Jun 2006 13:25
What the hell is going on here! The guy Cheeky seems spot on IMV. It's a bit pointless getting into slanging matches with dumb chavs though.
Yates is probably one of Hounslows better pubs, but this is not saying much as they are mostly all dire, completely due to the rough clientele who are either rough young asian locals poncing about after leaving work at Carphone Warehouse, or shot to pieces older punters who have long since lost teeth and dignity (go in the Bell especially for this one)
When you have a pub in a hell hole like Hounslow, where being attacked at night is par for the course, don't be surprised when the pubs are rough! Yates is not a bad choice though if you are in the town centre and need a drink, or maybe lunch.
16 Jun 2006 11:00
This is definitely NOT the best pub in Richmond. It's the most expensive and has some of the worst service.
If they sorted this out it would be worth a visit as the location is lovely.
16 Jun 2006 10:40
Hammersmith is a bit of a black hole for pubs, but this is a top class one. Fullers have done a good job of keeping an old pub in it's original ornate style. I wouldn't choose to have a night out in Hammersmith, but if you are in the area for some reason, this pub is definitely worth a visit.
16 Jun 2006 10:35
Not a Wetherspoons? I'll have to visit it now the Chain Nazis have gone...
16 Jun 2006 10:21
Who cares about non-MEAT eaters?
Go away you tree hugging weirdos
It's a funny pub this one, but being so close to the rugby ground, they were mad to shut it down.
16 Jun 2006 10:20
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
Agree with the previous comment about the Magpie..
Pleased to see that The Phoenix seems far more like it's old self again. The pool table side of the pub has now been refurbed, alas no Jukey, but the Pub was playing some excellent music inside so don't mind really.
I feared this place was being lost to the discerning pubgoer. I think the previous poster was trying to point out that it was a no nonsense pub - it is and that is a good thing, but you don't want to go too far and turn it into Chav Hell like the Three Fishes or Grizzly B to name 2 nearby examples.. The Phoenix has the balance right and is a pub I fear I will be visiting an awful lot this summer again.
5 Jun 2006 21:04
Jesus christ, the last punters review must be sarcastic.
Where to start? The locals certainly don't make you feel welcome. They were all crowded around the bar, making it impossible to get to the bar to order, despite the rest of the pub being empty. They visibly didn't try to make room either, even for a lady, the rude bastards.
The girl behind the counter couldn't pour Guinness properly. This was after she finally got round to serving us our drinks. After a local, who I guess perhaps had some ownership connection with the pub, butted in and ordered drinks for him and his mate, barking orders at the barmaid who I felt a little sorry for by this time.
The interior is tatty - Some superficial efforts at making the place look classy and like a posher hotel had been made, but failed miserably, mainly due to the tatty carpet and white vinyl sofas (nice!).
3 hours later, went past and my empty pints were still on the table and hadn't been collected. The worst drinking experience I have had in a long time, christ knows what the actual hotel must be like!!
27 May 2006 13:05
A fairly average pub, service was friendly and it didn't seem that bad.
27 May 2006 13:00
Went in when football was on and so was packed. A lot of younger Chavs go in here. The pub itself is very smoky and quite lively. Not sure I'd want to spend all evening in there, but it was fine for a quick pint.
27 May 2006 12:59
This seemed a very old pub, with low ceilings etc. I found the clientele friendly - The bar was crowded but a kind gent made way for me. I liked this pub, it had a certain character. Appears in places to be some sort of hook up joint for men and their Thai Brides, but I'll let that pass.
27 May 2006 12:58
Now open again and called "Trawlers"
Yep, another winner there methinks:)
7 May 2006 20:04
I thought it had improved, but on going in the other day I can only confirm the other recent comments - overrun with children, more of a creche than a pub. Full of IT consultants and their air brained wives, SUV's parked outside no doubt. Never has a clientele ruined a pub so much, which is a shame as I think they have done their refit very well..
2 May 2006 22:17
Nice traditional pub, service was friendly, food and beer was good.
2 May 2006 22:13
The Robert Inn (Master Robert Hotel), Hounslow
Soulless pub that has had a hotel built on to the side of it, on very busy road.
29 Apr 2006 12:34
The Spelthorne, Ashford Common
Probably because the property developers offered the brewery
Now vanished, covered by flats
22 Apr 2006 20:12
The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames
TURN OFF YOUR CAPS LOCK
I like this pub and the brunette barmaid is fit. So there.
22 Apr 2006 20:03
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Hello anonymouse, thank you for your kind words - I have no real axe to grind with Feltham pub drinkers, and you are right that there is no real difference between this pub's customers and the ones in Feltham.
I think my comments have been misconstrued on here about Feltham pubs - There are dodgy punters all over the area, but the pubs in Feltham are particularly bad, whereas this one is better run and more welcoming. I agree with your post completely, so my apologies.
22 Apr 2006 20:01
This is funny, because I did visibly notice how quiet the Red Lion has been recently and the comment below validates the reason why. Seems to have been overrun by Irish and their mates.
Having said that, it seemed OK on the inside at least - Service was good and the pub didn't seem too unchanged so would be intrigued to see why and where the Feltham regulars have gone.
22 Apr 2006 19:56
I went in this pub for this first time in eons, and was startled to see how busy it was. I had a good pint of Guinness and sat in the car park - Very noisy planes, but you can't blame the pub for that.
Pity I couldn't drink in the garden, but I have no wish to open the earlier debate on here about glass in the garden etc.
One of the better pubs in **Feltham** thats for sure
22 Apr 2006 19:51
A Fullers pub, unusually for Central London, so was expecting a certain level of quality - Couldn't shake off of the feeling that it was like being in a Wetherspoons. For no apparent reason, I didn't enjoy my pint in here, the Guinness wasn't great and the interior was pants. Go to the Cittie of Yorke, it's a far far better pub.
Not the worst pub in the world though. And why "Melton Mowbray" - It's in Rutland?
22 Apr 2006 19:34
Walked past this pub millions of times but never went in till last week.. Was staggering inside. 3 bars and like drinking in a chapel.
Sam Smiths so beer cheap and marvellous. Surroundings superb. Only usual downside is lack of music in SS pubs, but a small price to pay for cheap beer in great surroundings. One of the better pubs in London for sure.
22 Apr 2006 19:32
Yes. this pub was called The Bugle, back in the day when it was a proper pub. Bit rough in those days, but far better than it is now.
17 Apr 2006 13:20
Bit of an odd pub, but not too bad. A series of different rooms makes it almost 3 different pubs in one. The main bar is an old tatty room full of smoke and regulars, but out the back it is almost All Bar One esque. There is also a restaurant.
Not massively impressed, but I've been in worse.
17 Apr 2006 11:02
The Salisbury, Leicester Square
I am always suspicious about a pub highly rated by the beer strokers, but the Salisbury is an odd one make no mistake. This is a pub I have popped in and always left rapidly as it is always too rammed. However, I had to spend a whole evening here recently as the Chandos was unexpectedly closed.
The pub is of very traditional decor, an old pub still in it's original decor which is admirable, and the place is in "Londons historic pubs". Therefore, on the basis of checking out a well preserved classic old London pub, I would definitely recommend a visit.
However, whether I would recommend staying for more than one or 2 is doubtful - The pint I had in here was poor, MrsGP also had a very bad pint in here as well. It is really not the pubs fault, but it is also still TOO busy - full of pre-theatre goers getting in the way! But you can't hold that against them, more the perils of visiting a pub in this location.
Therefore, pop in for a pint in mid afternoon and enjoy. Steer clear in the evening.
9 Apr 2006 20:24
A good traditional pub, thank christ they have finally binned the Thai meal theme, that scared lots of people off for ages, myself included.
Back to being a proper pub, Irish landlord has a mightily impressive beer gut, well done that man! Barmaids were friendly, and very attractive too!
7 Apr 2006 17:48
As a pub/bar I despise, it is odd to wonder why I went in the George for a drink on a Thursday night recently. What is even odder is that I am going to post some praise for it. I wonder whether it was so much nicer because it was chav-less - Maybe because it was empty! The service was pretty friendly. They seem to have decorated it. Karoake was on, which I like.
I think the places sheer appalling reputation for chav hell has scared away all the customers, including the Chavs. And perhaps the owners are changing to try and attract normal clientele. Tellingly, the empty Thursday I went in, Filthy McNastys round the corner was packed!
I probably wouldn't choose to come in here again, but it's not as bad as I remembered. Honest.
7 Apr 2006 17:46
I wonder whether this is under new management? Went in for the first time in a while and I noticed how friendly and good the service is - Not sure if it was like this before? The comedy is good as well. One of Richmonds better pubs for sure.
7 Apr 2006 17:42
This is the 400th pub I have rated on BITE so I feel I should attempt to leave a decent review. There is not much to say about this pub, I found it by accident never even knowing about it's existence before. It was absolutely empty apart from one other customer. A very spartanly decorated place, I wonder if it gets busier during the evenings? Strikes me as a very local pub. Toilet is quite narrow, at least might catch out any fat Hounslow chavs wandering in here by mistake.
All in all, OK, but nothing out the ordinary.
26 Mar 2006 20:38
Not impressed by this pub. Dingy and dark inside, filled with bankers and their spoilt families, service was poor. Nice location but that is about it. Guinness was pants in here as well.
26 Mar 2006 20:35
Seemed an allright pub, slightly marred by some of the deeply rude posh people being served in there, one of whom seemed to want to make a big point about how brown and granary bread are different - Get a life you sad woman and stop trying to be so clever.
The pub was allright though and served a good pint of Guinness
26 Mar 2006 20:33
Filthy McNasty's II, Twickenham
Went in here for the first time since the "refit". This was on a rugby day. I have to say, although it is not my cup of tea, there is a place for a slightly rough round the edges bar that shows music in Twickenham. There's enough cliquey crappy pubs around ala Bear/Patch so there is room for this place too.
19 Mar 2006 20:36
Spent an afternoon in here and enjoyed it immensely. The Guinness was good and the service seemed good as well - I couldn't fault it.
19 Mar 2006 12:19
Appears closed - Perhaps they are turning it back into a pub again rather than a faux-reataurant? We can only hope..
12 Mar 2006 19:17
The Twickenham Tup, Twickenham
Always managed to avoid watching rugby in here, but tried it the other day. It was OK, certainly well organised with some TV's labelled "Rugby" and others "football". Guinness was nice. Too full of poncy types smoking themselves to death though - Women on the look out for Rugby blokes to pull who natter all the way through the rugby, and poncy geezers who want to "do the tup" on a Twickenham rugby day.
Not bad as a last resort to watch the game, but there are better pubs in the area to be honest.
12 Mar 2006 19:03
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
It's a nice pub with a good menu, but they should be careful it doesn't go the way of the Three Fishes - Keep it friendly to non-locals. Being able to get to the bar to get a drink would help, as would stopping the barmaids flirting with the Chav punters and getting them serving.
However, still one of the best pubs in the area.
12 Mar 2006 18:54
A very odd pub. Teddington has a lot of nice pubs, and this isn't one of them. Service was very friendly, but the interior decor and design of the pub is atrocious. The bar appears to have been planted in the middle of the room and sticks out a mile. It was very very smoky. No ventilation. None of the furniture matches. There was a small TV, but the picture was very very fuzzy. And the point of that is?
Apart from the service, which was prompt, I see no reason whatsoever to come in here, especially when there are so many better alternatives.
12 Mar 2006 18:48
A foodie pub. Ate here once and it was fine. Obviously in competition with the Boathouse opposite, which is a virtually identical type of pub. Not much to choose between them I'd say..
12 Mar 2006 18:36
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
I can see why this pub gets up some peoples noses, as it has gone from being a traditional pub to somewhere the landlord clearly has ambitions of grandeur for. I am not sure being too strict on the attire is a good idea, go to the Sunbury conservative club perhaps if you want to be a dress nazi.
However.. The food in here is staggering - Restaurant quality (and a good restaurant at that). My Guinness was quite nice too. If you want somewhere to go for a top notch meal and a few chilled out drinks, this place will suffice. The Admiral Hawke is better for your traditional pub grub, but if you fancy something out of the ordinary go here.
And the bar staff are always good looking, albeit all act as if they have never worked behind a bar before.
5 Mar 2006 16:49
This is the English "pub" hidden away inside Harrods (not the "Harrods Bar" already listed on this site - thats a different one)
It feels like a film set, and is like no pub I have been in outside of Harrods. The service was friendly though, but the "Harrods Lager" tasted odd - I wondered which brand it really was, something Czech i reckon, Very expensive in here obviously as well.
26 Feb 2006 21:03
The Bunch Of Grapes, Knightsbridge
As seen in "Londons Historic Pubs"
Indeed, it's decor is great, a real example of a proper English pub. Sadly, it is let down by the cretininous service. Slow in the extreme, I waited at 4 different vantage points before being served. The barmaid disappeared for another 5 minutes and came back with an atrociously poured pint of guinness.
There were hoardes of staff milling about doing anything but serve customers.
There was a fair smattering of rough types in this pub, baffingly so for it's location. Fairly intimidating. Plus a lot of Yank tourists- they've found a good pub potentially, but I hope they don't judge all UK pubs by the crappy service in this joint.
A wasted opportunity.
26 Feb 2006 20:58
Went in this pub for the first time in over a decade, and it wasn't bad. The thing that struck me was the service, which was exceedingly friendly. The comments on here suggest the landlord is new, which if the case, he is doing a great job.
The beer was OK - The pub is a little bit tatty around the edges, but I thought it was fine for a couple of pints. Let's face it, there are enough shitty pubs around Victoria, so this one is worth a little walk too, this and the equally good Rising Sun.
26 Feb 2006 20:54
Fantastic pub - a cracking example of how to keep a pub in good shape without making it tatty or all bar one esque. Great decor, nice service, good pint and best of all, great music playing.
I disagree completely with the comment about lack of atmosphere - I thought compared to some of the pubs around here it was great.
26 Feb 2006 20:52
This pub was a pretty random find for me. Stuck in the middle of Pimlico, I was astonished to find an irish type pub full of working class people smoking and drinking themselves silly.
This is not a bad thing - a good unpretentious boozer, don't know how they will cope when the smoking ban comes in, but served an excellent pint of guinness. Posers stay away though.
26 Feb 2006 20:51
This seemed a very odd pub. The interior decor was peculiar (framed pictures of champagne bottles? Why??), there was a very odd mix of people. There was a funny atmosphere. At 10.00 virtually everyone left the pub.
Very underwhelmed to be honest.
26 Feb 2006 20:48
I liked this pub. Big, airy, a traditional drinking establishment. I would imagine it was even nicer in summer. Only downside is that it was very expensive.
26 Feb 2006 20:47
I was fearful before entering this pub - it had the look of "themed family pub - approach with caution" written all over it.
It clearly is a food pub - there is a restaurant area that was absolutely packed. I of course therefore had something to eat, and it was very nice. The waitresses are very sexy too..
I would recommend this pub if say, you have an elderly relative you need to take out for an uncomplicated meal. For a proper drinking session, I wouldn't recommend it.
26 Feb 2006 20:43
What a great pub - good service, nice food and virtually chav-less. Great!
18 Feb 2006 18:16
Went to this pub for the first time properly and was dismayed as it appears to be the 18 year old chav's favoured choice for a Friday night.. avoid
18 Feb 2006 18:14
The White Hart, Sherfield on Loddon
Seemed a nice pub. Guinness was good and the service was friendly. The only downside was the meal I ate was poor, Rubbish Pie with watery mash - However, other peoples food looked OK, so perhaps just avoid the pies (if you'll pardon the expression)
in the middle of nowhere so you would be hard pressed to pop in on the off chance, but if you are in the area it is worth a visit.
12 Feb 2006 20:36
I'm afraid the place stank - or do you think the smell of shite is acceptable in a pub.
not biased at all then "The Landlord". nuff said
29 Jan 2006 20:48
yep the bouncers are bad, but it's an O'Neills?
wasn't too bad once inside - service was fast and friendly, pint was OK.
29 Jan 2006 20:12
The Hogshead, Leicester Square
An appalling pub. Hogsheads can be pretty bad anyway, but this one is shocking - noisy, dirty, expensive, and if you want a pub where you are going to get your bag nicked, this is target #1.
avoid at all costs..
29 Jan 2006 20:11
pretty nondescript pub next to Leicester Square, hence is tourists hell.
having said that, clearly a far better option than the nearby Hogshead rubbish, so for it's location is not bad.
29 Jan 2006 20:06
The Weir Hotel, Walton on Thames
This pub has reams of bad reviews, and I have to admit, I don't visit it that often, but I went here the other night and enjoyed it very much.
I went for a pre-arranged party, and the service was prompt and very friendly. The Guinness tasted fine to me as well. Food was provided and it was excellent.
Wasn't that busy apart from the party so perhaps some of the pricing comments are valid, but on my visit I thought it was good.
25 Jan 2006 19:56
Caterham is an odd place, it is a commuter belt but the town centre is quite tatty. As with this pub, it is an old fashioned boozer, quite tatty, with some hardened drinkers - I don't mind it though, I had a decent pint of Guinness. Somewhere to go if you want a solitary drink or 2 to get legless
25 Jan 2006 19:52
A football pub, this is on the corner of Griffin Park, one of the 4.
Was a traditional old fashioned pub. I went on a football day so it was particularly so. Seemed OK, if a bit rough round the edges.
18 Jan 2006 18:20
big pub in a grotty bit of Rotherham - probably not the worst pub round here by a long way though.
31 Dec 2005 10:19
A disturbing pub, newly built that serves food - mainly a family restaurant in a pub "style" - not a drinking venue of choice, although the food is nice.
31 Dec 2005 10:17
The Fairways Hotel, Brinsworth
Pub in a very grim area of Yorkshire. They do a nice sunday carvery though, but I wouldn't want to spend an evening there.
31 Dec 2005 10:10
went in for the first time in a while.. not too bad, although in no way in hell would you want to be in here after 8pm.
21 Dec 2005 21:29
Third visit, and poor service to match my first visit. Was waiting at the bar ages whilst the barmaid faffed about serving someone very slowly, then she walked off!
Then some halfwit at the bar left his bag under my table and got shirty when MrsGP picked it up and enquired to the ownership, quite reasonably I thought.
This pub always turns into an unpleasant visit for me - I am going to cut my losses I think , as the poor service and mad rich rude old customers are too too much.
21 Dec 2005 21:26
Seemed an OK pub, had a stinking hangover which soured my visit but hardly the pubs fault! Would recommend a visit..
21 Dec 2005 21:18
Visited this pub for my Xmas lunch at work..
It's oh so posh, in the commuter belt. I was (un)reliably informed that Angelina Jolie has been seen in here - Whether this is true I know not.
The village is nice, and it is a traditional posh village pub - full of workers from nearby like me and posh old ladies that lunch. Had a nice meal in here it has to be said, and the pint I had was also agreeable.
21 Dec 2005 21:16
What a great little pub, magnificent food and good atmosphere.
20 Dec 2005 18:30
A totally bizarre pub, this is an old church, very much still like a church as well. Even to the extent that the bar staff could ring the proper bells behind the bar! Worth a visit for the novelty value alone.
The actual pub does have a bit of a Wetherspoons feel to it, and they have bouncers which are unnecessary and a bit ego-inflated.
But worth a visit for the decor!
20 Dec 2005 18:30
Great pub, Sam Smiths so quality of wares second to none as usual, plus the riverside location.
Only negative point would be the surly goth behind the bar, but apart from that, I like.
20 Dec 2005 18:25
Why do you not know how?
Felt a bit Peter Kay when I went in, but I thought the landlord was exceedingly friendly. Not posh but seemed OK to me - Hope it stays open!
20 Dec 2005 18:24
Initially I was worried by this pub, as it looked to be one of those average run down joints with the stereotypical poor food. However, although the service was slow, it was friendly, and the table tiding away leaved a lot to be desired, I had some staggeringly good food in here - So would defintely recommend
20 Dec 2005 18:22
went in at the weekend and was full of women on the pull - this is clearly a pub now aimed at the ladies, which is not a bad thing in itself, just means i will avoid like all other similar all bar pants places!
incidentally though, all these birds on the pull are not going to have much success now - pop over to the Racing Page, it's packed full of men!
it's by no means the worst pub in the world, and of course I exagerrate, and moving with the times is good, if the change is good - it's just a shame that one more good pub has fallen prey to the Changing Rooms brigade - it's not as if there are no pubs like that in Richmond is it?
MrsGP was a big fan of the refit though - so at least thats 50% of this household happy!
13 Dec 2005 18:49
Yep, another place serving great Pizzas is just what Bath needs:)
No-one is pretending the Beehive was a smart joint - but that is the point, there are millions of poncy joints in Bath but an ever decreasing number of your spit and sawdust places - no-one needs another crappy wine bar/theme pub do they?
11 Dec 2005 18:51
If I am not mistaken, this was the pub where a few years ago there was a News of the World-esque love triangle and the landlord got murdered - The pub is not actually that bad so don't let it put you off!
11 Dec 2005 18:46
Ventured into here after being scared off by the Chav Hell over the road in the Old Bill.. no different.
The only difference was the smell of urine from where I was sitting - The toilets are in a complete state, Mrs GP confirmed the burn marks, broken seats, leaks, smells etc. Although I could confirm the smell from my seat. Any thoughts of eating in such a disgusting hovel soon subsided. Quick pint and then made my exit - An awful awful experience, and went over to the Queens Head, which was an altogether pleasanter experience.
11 Dec 2005 14:31
Never used to be that keen on this place, but went in after a long absence and not sure why I disliked it - Seemed a great pub, with a decent atmosphere. Would visit again definitely.
Was 80% men - Perhaps all the women who make up 80% of the Orange Trees customers these days should pop over here if they want to pull, as there's no men in that sad excuse for a pub now.
11 Dec 2005 14:29
One of the best pubs in Bath - No young idiots wearing salmon pink polo shirts in here.. Big Music pub.
6 Dec 2005 22:28
This pub is in "Londons Historic Pubs" Historic it may be, but it's not actually that good.
I didn't think the service was that bad actually, but the choice of beers was poor, and the was an odd atmosphere in there - An odd mix with a few dodgy punters. It was a bit tatty as well.
All in all, it is worth visiting if you are going to see Ally Pally, which is impressive, and the views are impressive, but don't go out of your way just to visit this pub - It's not worth it.
4 Dec 2005 13:04
Had a pleasant enough afternoon in here - I have to say, it didn't strike me as much out of the ordinary (apart from the Barmaid with half her bottom hanging out..) but it was OK - Worth a stop off perhaps.
27 Nov 2005 10:22
Is this pub famous for something? Or am I confusing it with a different Coach and Horses? Seemed OK, if a little dead on the atmosphere. Nothing particularly wrong with the pub though, perfectly OK for a stop off.
26 Nov 2005 10:59
A nice little pub well hidden just off Regents Street. Staff were a bit rubbish, but this is central london. Pub itself was dark, traditional, with open fire. I like.
26 Nov 2005 10:58
The Slug and Lettuce, Oxford Circus
Typical Slug and Lettuce, full of suits. Downstairs was very tedious, although I was at a function upstairs which wasn't so bad. Prices astonomical!
26 Nov 2005 10:56
There's too many negative comments from too many posters for them all to be untrue.. And they all involve the service.
I like the pub itself, and the other punters are happy rugby loving folk, but in a service industry the way the staff act towards their CUSTOMERS, (you know the people putting money into the pubs pockets) is nothing short of disgraceful.
Only in England would you get away with this...
6 Nov 2005 10:04
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
Wise words Stellad, but don't aim them at me, as none of the recent posters have been me, and there was no derogatory comments from me anyway in the first place!
people need to loosen up and see that most posters are positive about this pub rather than getting on their high horse about any implied criticism.
The whole point of this site is to express peoples opinions, good and bad.
My only criticism originally was **on that day** the miserable service and the dodgy geezers hanging outside - This is a valid criticism for that particular visit, and I am not saying it is like that all the time. Or am I meant to be happy about being served by someone looking like their dog had died?
Otherwise, full marks for a local community pub - I think it is a very good thing.
2 Nov 2005 22:16
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
Can understand the recent comments - Last time I went in it seemed to have declined drastically. Some sort of paint job had gone badly wrong, the jukebox was hanging off the wall and the pool table out of use.
Hopefully it was just for repairs, but it does seem a bit tattier of late it has to be said.
29 Oct 2005 20:05
I, and many on this site have given this pub a bit of a slagging in the past. However, I went in again for the first time in years, and to be fair it was OK.
Bar staff were very friendly, it is a very local pub, but it seems to have considerably less of the threatening chav element that say, the Red Lion or the Rose and Crown has. And the Guinness is good.
Therefore, I would perhaps recommend a stop off for a quick pint - it's not that bad.
29 Oct 2005 20:02
A real "Family" pub and make no mistake - If you have elderly relatives visiting, take them here for a meal they will love it.
Therefore, not the place to go for a fun night out - But perfectly nice for a drink and a meal as the food was excellent.
29 Oct 2005 18:56
What a nice pub. Has been given a bit of a refit, and usually I dislike such things. However, I was won over by the friendly service and good local ales. All in all, a good pub.
9 Oct 2005 18:39
Dear oh dear, have the pub refitters consulted changing rooms perhaps?
A pub that did not need refitting - Before it was too light, now it is too dark. Before it was open plan, now it has pot plants and cubby holes.
What is it with pubs and pot plants these days, garden centres must be making a fortune.
I found the service very friendly, and there are far worse pubs in the area, but the ambience and charm of the old place has been ruined. If anyone likes The Bear in Twickenham (which tellingly used to be an All Bar One) then the Orange Tree is now virtually identical. Has turned a good pub into an average one.
4 Oct 2005 21:29
what a great pub - let down sometimes by the service as many others have posted on here - not necessarily the quality, more the lack of it.
employ more staff! how hard can it be?
otherwise spoils what is the best pub in the area by a mile.
25 Sep 2005 13:41
A nice find, a Sam Smiths pub in such a posh area - As such, it is a bit more fancy than your usual Sam Smiths pub - Not much atmosphere, but a decent pub all the same.
25 Sep 2005 13:32
Ignoring the anonymous insults, this is a good pub - will be interested to see how feasible it is in the middle of winter, but I suspect the big patio heaters might still work well and make it an all year round pub to sit outside at - Nice!
22 Sep 2005 12:06
"Buffoon" - Nice - I don't choose to throw insults from behind an anonymous tag.
To repeat one final time, my username has details of all the pubs I have been on so anyone can see what I like or dislike, or indeed, contact me direct if they disagree through the BITE messages option.
You go on to pubs, post insults and no-one can come back to you, or see if you have posted insults anywhere else, or indeed differentiate you between any other troll posting insults or their opinion.
Got the difference yet maybe?
22 Sep 2005 12:05
the pub hasn't changed at all, but with the students away it was blatantly obvious how many illegal drinkers there were in here - and they were all hooray-henrys as well to make it worse.
sort it out guys - get the bouncers to do their jobs..
20 Sep 2005 21:08
i liked this pub - caters for veggies granted, but every other pub in town will probably serve you a burger, so i don't mind if one caters just for the tofu eaters.
a bit "bohemian" this pub - men wearing berets and i heard the Levellers being played in the background. it's a good pub though.
20 Sep 2005 21:04
a great pub, with some great choice of beers and food. plus a cat that verges on the over-friendly. would recommend.
20 Sep 2005 21:02
never really went in here properly till the other day - and it is a nice unique little pub. i like it.
20 Sep 2005 21:00
had a meal in the afternoon here, a very very cheap meal which i admit i feared the worst - however it was superb. full marks - a good no-nonsense pub.
20 Sep 2005 20:58
what happened to the Huntsman? A classic late night hangout ruined.. full of those daft blokes with fluffy styled hair wearing salmon pink polo shirts - do they realise they look like tits?
The pub still stays open late, but the move to resemble a garden centre has ruined it.
20 Sep 2005 20:56
still an excellent bar, cheap drinks and a jukebox that plays a great range of power ballads..
20 Sep 2005 20:54
seems an ok pub - massive outside bit, pint was fine. all in all, perfectly acceptable.
20 Sep 2005 20:50
If there is a simplified menu it should suit you fine, anonymous. Takes guts to hide behind your username you know, well done!
11 Sep 2005 19:12
Better than all the Chav bars in Staines, but still reeks of All Bar one & Ikea.
1 Sep 2005 12:09
The Bell Hotel and Inn, Woburn
Mostly concentrates on the hotel side, but the left hand side is a pub, albeit very small. Hence, it is quiet and not that interesting - However, is a perfectly acceptable stop off.
29 Aug 2005 18:04
Fairly big and busy pub in posh Woburn. Clientele is a mix of the local rich fiefdoms and the poorer folk. Seemed an OK pub though, and service was friendly.
29 Aug 2005 18:03
A very odd pub, especially compared to the others in Twickenham. The fact that it is at the bottom of an office block does it give it the look of a dodgy pub on an estate as the earlier person commented. It's not that bad inside though.
26 Aug 2005 09:04
Visited for first time since the refurb.
I think I might have been expecting more as the pub didn't seem that much different, apart from the old restauranty bit being now expanded. It has definitely improved the pub though. Didn't eat so can't comment on whether the food has improved.
26 Aug 2005 09:01
The Hook, Line and Sinker, Twickenham
Went in here for the first time in a long long time. Was incredibly quiet compared to the Bear over the road and the Eel Pie. I have slagged this place off in the past, but to be honest now, there is little difference between here, the Patch and the Bear - They are virtually the same pub.
Is expensive in here - A round of 6 drinks cost 3 more in here than in the Eel Pie - Why?? Food is little expensive, but having said that, it was very nice, so credit where it's due.
26 Aug 2005 08:59
The Barley Mow, Englefield Green
Regarding the comment below, the staff complaint wasn't about one particular member - All 3 of the staff I or my party came into contact with were all rude, so I wouldn't want to pin it on one person in particular.
22 Aug 2005 16:50
Filthy McNasty's II, Twickenham
Let's face it, it was pub for chavs and pikeys before it changed it's name - At least now no unsuspecting punter will go in by mistake!!
22 Aug 2005 16:34
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
Although many people are very opinionated about pubs on this site, myself included, I doubt whether many people would not go in a pub because of comments on here. Especially if there is a mixture of good and bad as there is about this pub.
Personally I would always rather visit a pub myself to get the flavour if it, and if the criticism is unfounded then you have nothing to worry about hopefully. If there criticism all says similar things, then perhaps take note of it, after all this site could act as a useful source for improving your pub (not saying this applies to you by the way..)
18 Aug 2005 16:37
A poor pub. Had the joy of being taken in a here for a cheap meal once, and I doubt I have tasted worse food.
18 Aug 2005 12:29
Filthy McNasty's II, Twickenham
Filthy McNastys 2? Some sort of joke surely!!
Unless they have truly come up with a name to match the pub..
8 Aug 2005 21:11
The Scotsmans Lounge, Edinburgh
Wasn't impressed with this pub. Close to the royal mile, so might explain the crappy faux-scottish interior to fool the tourists. Atmosphere was dead, my pint was deader. Avoid.
7 Aug 2005 22:13
Located off the beaten track on St Andrews square, the metal tables outside made it look like a crappy sub-all bar one. However, upon entry it was a revelation - This building is clearly an old pub, and it's interior was marvellous. Cafe Bar it may say, but a traditional old pub decor it is inside, and you could almost pretend it was a proper pub.
7 Aug 2005 22:12
The Caledonian Sample Room, Edinburgh
I liked this pub. The barmaid was welcoming, the punters seemed honest friendly folk, and there was a bit of a drunken singalong. What more could you ask for?
7 Aug 2005 22:09
Went in this pub to watch the Rugby, and was impressed with the facilities for this.
Baring in mind it was 2.30 in the afternoon, I didn't expect the gangs of tattooed women dressed up to the nines and blokes knocking them back ten to the dozen - I think if I came in here in an evening I would be very very afraid..
7 Aug 2005 22:08
A very nice proper pub, full of seemingly red faced proper drinkers.
7 Aug 2005 22:02
better than it was, but they need to clean up the garden - The grass is covered in fag butts and dog shit, and the benches are stinking.
A shame as the inside of the pub is fine.
31 Jul 2005 19:48
The Moon on the Square, Feltham
Went for a pint in here after a long absence, and I have to say, give them credit where it's due, it's OK. Absolutely packed mind you, they must be making a mint. Despite this, you always get served quickly and they always have an excellent choice of beers.
There are some very "unique to feltham" customers, but most of the leary kids don't come in here. I certainly wouldn't mess with the landlord judging by the size of him either..
31 Jul 2005 19:47
The Armstrong Gun, Englefield Green
I really really liked this pub. Can feel intimidating as you walk in as there is a long line of locals welded to the bar. However, they are friendly. Then I discovered the back of the pub and gardem which is surprisingly large. Plus they had good TV's, pool table and jukebox. In fact, this is a proper pub make no mistake.
Would fully recommend a visit.
31 Jul 2005 19:42
The Barley Mow, Englefield Green
As the other reviewers have said, this is a nice pub, in a good location. Can't help feeling though that are squandering this advantage. Went here the other day, the beer was OK, and very nice looking over the green. Service was rude though, not just from one staff member but all.
Had food, and it was average but OK (Surprising given the "gastropub" look they are going for - Would have expected better). All the staff had a really bad attitude. And this was at Saturday lunchtime.
As a result I doubt I will go back - Pubs are a service based industry, so why people who work in pubs think they can be rude is beyond me. Nip round the corner to the Armstrong Gun instead, they are much nicer in there.
31 Jul 2005 19:40
Yet again you have missed the point. Anyone can read all of the comments about any of the pubs I have been to. You can dip on to any pub and leave insults behind the banner of "anonymous".
And why would you have to go to somewhere like Hoxton? A meaningless statement.
Anyway, anyone on this page, forget all the petty anonymous sniping - IN MY OPINION the Castlebar is a very good pub. Others may disagree, but some like pubs like this one, others like Edwards and the like - Different strokes for different folks etc.. I think most people will know exactly which camp they fall into.
24 Jul 2005 15:37
The Old Manor Inn, Walton on Thames
I can see what people mean about "cliquey" - I got that impression also. Having said that, this is a charming little pub. Very old fashioned, and I actually thought it was very nice. I will certainly return for a second visit.
Fortunately I missed Jim Davidson though.
23 Jul 2005 21:48
The Harbour Lights, Bournemouth
An odd pub and no mistake. Hidden away in the Imax building in Bournemouth, this is a pub well hidden. Find it though and it is definitely kitted out like a proper pub.
Seems to cater for the hungover stag parties - Breakfasts looked huge and impressive. Was packed, but service was quite friendly. An odd pub, and not one you would want to have an evening in perhaps, but the view on the balcony over the sea is nice and the food is reasonable.
23 Jul 2005 21:43
A curious pub - Only noticed after going in that it was a gay pub. Is quite grotty, but not necessarily a bad thing - It had all the components of an old mans pub ie. Dishellved punters, lots of smoke, jukebox. Which I like very much,
So on my one visit, it seemed OK.
23 Jul 2005 21:39
I have recently received a lot of flyers through my door about this pub - Yet another new management, but this time with a bit of marketing - Offering a FREE PINT and a 2 meals for the price of 1.
I thought this very generous, so thought I would go to claim my freeby and see if the new management had improved the pub.
Inside, the pub does seem to have improved - They have always had trouble with the layout, but they have got some more comfy looking furniture and taken out the pool table (yay) but removed the quiz machine (boo). I reckon this will improve the pub 100% in winter.
However, we are in summer not winter, so I sat outside. Lots of creaking patio furniture, covered in ants, literally falling apart. Almost up to my knees in fag butts. Why spend money sprucing up the inside if basic repairs and cleaning are beyond you?
And the core problem of this pub remains the same - the service. There are never enough staff on for starters. Then for seconds, they seem to employ bar staff who have never worked behind the bar before - They are unable to distinguish who was first at the bar and randomly serve customers waiting in no particular order, thus hacking off many. I also had trouble ordering food from a very flustered barmaid.
The service is the bedrock on which you found your pub. You might have some negative aspects, but good service can make an average pub a place you want to visit - There are other pubs in Feltham, such as the Running Horse or Red Lion for instance, that are busier, perhaps more tatty round the edges, but have always shown excellent service. Hence I will go there instead if I want a local pub.
Please please sort out your staffing rather than your free vouchers - The service is far more important..
22 Jul 2005 20:24
I'm not really taking your post seriously as it seems you are more upset I don't like one particular bar that you like (Baroque) and have formed your entire opinion on that.
Each person to their own as you say, only I don't have to resort to insulting people to put across my view - especially people who post insults behind the banner of "anonymous".
22 Jul 2005 16:23
The Minnow is a definite "new style" pub. Inside it looks like a hotel foyer and is frequented by similar clientele.
It has a large front patio gravelled area, which whilst like sitting in a giant litter tray, is quite pleasant in the sunshine.
The food looks nice but is expensive (this is Weybridge after all..). The service is a bit dubious - You would expect better service in a joint like this, but it sometimes seems the posher the pub, the more rude and lazy the staff are. Perhaps it is the la-di-dah punters involved.
Anyway, in the sun this is a pub that is worth visiting for a pleasant drink, but it might get a bit annoying after a longer stay.
22 Jul 2005 16:19
No problem at all Wmon, but I suggest you re-read my last post as you've completely missed my point. My post wasn't aimed at you.
20 Jul 2005 13:12
A Travelodge is now almost built over this pub. Ah well..
18 Jul 2005 16:56
Would be interested if all these "Anonymous" posters would reveal their identiry - As they are the ones having a pop at me, and accusing the management of having posted.
I think they should be quiet unless they reveal themselves!
As for Gastro Pub.. Why not eh? Ealing has enough bars for Chavs, ie. 99% of all the other places down the Uxbridge road so this place is a refreshing change.
18 Jul 2005 16:45
What a surprisingly grotty pub. Being in Kew, I thought this place may be a little more refined.
However, I found the dodgy blokes going round trying to sell knocked off DVD's a bit off putting, also the blokes shouting stuff at women passers by.
Surprisingly leary chav customers - What are they doing in Kew?
18 Jul 2005 13:07
This is a truly first rate pub. Out of the way of the rest of Richmond, so you get none of the Hounslow chavs ruining the Atmos - A very nice pub for a civilised drink.
10 Jul 2005 20:28
Can't judge a pub by one bad experience so returned for another try - Seemed much better this time, the exceptionally rude bald barman has either left or wasn't on.
Found a little back yard as well. A decent pub, nothing staggeringly different to set it apart from the rest though..
10 Jul 2005 20:26
A good summer pub - Venture on to the Green and watch loads of couples get frisky.. Get a room for gods sakes!
The pub is good though.
10 Jul 2005 20:22
Went in this pub and had to leave after quaffing a drink very very quickly due to the heat.. Ever heard of Aircon guys??!
10 Jul 2005 20:10
More of a bar than a pub, this is one for the discerning middle-aged Sheffielder, looking to pull a more classy lady than you would get in one of the towns tarty pubs.
Popular with the gay crowd also.
8 Jul 2005 16:10
A curious name for a pub, this place seems quite popular, and is almost 200 years old.
Some of the patrons look like they were there when it opened!
Not that bad a pub though.
8 Jul 2005 16:05
I once almost got arrested for taking a pint glass home from this pub.
Bit extreme I thought at the time.
The pubs big and noisy.
8 Jul 2005 16:03
The Greyhound Inn, Attercliffe
This pub is next door to the Don Valley stadium, so was popular with fans of the Sheffield Eagles, when they were in their prime.
The pub is OK, always quite busy, daft fact, was the first pub in Sheffield to serve Caffreys!
8 Jul 2005 15:55
A very old pub from the 19th century, is very small, but quite nice - I like it.
8 Jul 2005 15:53
Quite a dark old fashioned pub, which is good. Certainly better than many of the other nearby chav-infested places so would recommend.
25 Jun 2005 12:36
A pub that as the name suggests, is an old police station. Therefore, the pub itself is quite a nice old building, which does give it a certain charm.
It does seem to cater for the chav market though, even if there is a sign outside saying "No heavy jewellry" so perhaps they are trying to get rid of them!
Not a pub I would go out of my way to visit, but is OK for a stop off.
25 Jun 2005 12:35
Too right Sergeant Howie - I remember the old pub as well, and it was a good one - It was only 5 years ago they changed it to their current format, but it seems so much longer..
23 Jun 2005 13:43
Ahahaha classic rip off move by the Patch - Did they try and sell you some bottled water for 50 a bottle?
This place has gone to the dogs so much. Sadly, all the money they make from Rugby days means they can be rubbish all year round. See also Admiral Nelson in Whitton...
23 Jun 2005 13:40
Good to hear Kollantai, I will visit this pub again, as it sounds as though it has improved.
20 Jun 2005 16:41
A big random, Beef-Eatery type of pub. Not to my tastes.
14 Jun 2005 13:28
The Parade Bar, Bath University
tomandy2 you are correct in that the place is a rip off.
Back in the mid 90's, this place was quite spartan in decor and run by the University, who employed staff who clearly enjoyed serving students, plus the prices were reasonable. There was even a decent jukebox. Perfect place for a few quiet beers and a laugh.
Sadly, then the powers that be gave a contract to Gardner Merchant caterers to run it. Not sure if they are still in charge now, but it is still run by caterers. This meant they were running it for a profit, so they decided to style it like a city pub and offer prices to match.
Blame David VanDerlinden, the dodgy ex-VC of the University (And the highest paid). He sold it off to pay for all the University sports facilities!
14 Jun 2005 13:09
A pub which in decor and drinks choice, could be situated in Hounslow town centre rather than Cyprus - Not necessarily a good thing.
Got very busy though, but distinctly average.
12 Jun 2005 16:08
An excellent bar by the seafront, was poplised mostly by young locals which is a sure sign of a decent venue rather than the other touristy trash..
12 Jun 2005 16:06
Didn't really like it here, beer seemed very very expensive, far more so than in other bars, and the bar owner seemed a bit of a "character" - Not in a good way..
12 Jun 2005 16:03
An English themed pub, that has a nice logo of Shakespeares face as it's logo! You can even buy merchandise inside.. There is no pub in England anything like this.
However, it seems to be run by a team of middle aged English expats, who do work very hard to be welcoming - One of the locals messed up my bill and was very rude, but on the whole, I found this place OK, for an early drink and breakfast - Plus it is next to the excellent mini golf course.
They show key sports events too..
12 Jun 2005 14:54
A very small "Irish" bar, located in a particularly unfortunate location on a busy road crossroads.
Seems to absorb the traffic noise a lot more than the other places nearby, and there are many better places to drink to be honest.
12 Jun 2005 14:52
The Step Inn is one of those "Irish" pubs that you seem to get not in Ireland that I doubt resemble anything located within Ireland.
This one was not bad though, very busy and lively, with the Karoake. Downsides were the rude bar staff (VERY unusual for Cyprus) and the location on a busy road - But then, most of the bars in Limassol are on a road, so that is not a major criticism. Worth a visit, especially late in the evening.
12 Jun 2005 14:46
Pub near the breeze blocks - Not a bad pub, and is very fortunate in that it has a tourist attraction next door - Which must keep it in a healthy profit..
3 Jun 2005 13:48
St Margarets Tavern, St Margarets
Each to their own Cmerrigan, I was with 8 other people and all agreed that the place was unbearably hot. Smokey as well. No woolly hat! It needs Aircon, or even perhaps, a window opening. Don't be defensive about your pub, constructive criticism was all I was offering, not slagging it off for no reason!
I agree that the food looked good and the service was good.
Plus for a Lions game I reckon it would be a good place to watch it.
3 Jun 2005 12:23
St Margarets Tavern, St Margarets
Lookes very impressive from the outside. When I went in, I was hit by the size of the place - It's massive!
Lots of people in there were eating, and although I didn't eat, it looked pretty good.
As somewhere to go for a drink in the evening though I feel it falls short. It is absolutely packed, hence you can't hear yourself think, never mind have a conversation (perhaps too many tables crammed together methinks). Also the problem with having sofas in a pub like this is that no-one can hear anything and when they dim the lights around 9ish, you might as well drift off to sleep.
The temperature was very uncomfortable, the pub badly needs some decent ventilation, or indeed Aircon. Service was good though considering how busy it was. It was also full of people who clearly like to go "Drinking in St Margarets" as a badge of honour, as some sort of status symbol rather than as an enjoyable night out.
All in all, a disappointment, but I can imagine if you came in here in the day perhaps, it would be a much improved experience, so I don't want to put anyone off a visit.
3 Jun 2005 09:19
The Druid's Head, Kingston Upon Thames
Quite clearly an ex Hogshead despite the name change. Wasn't looking forward to a visit, as it seemed quite a sterile type of pub - However, wasn't that bad. The food I had was tremendous.
The only sour point was the piped music in the background, playing some awful Mariah Carey song. Why do they think this would appeal to customers?
30 May 2005 12:11
Went in here last night and found a previously unknown beer garden - Very nice it is out there too.
This is really an excellent pub, despite the best efforts of the brewery - I noticed it was very quiet in the main bar, and the Plasma Screen had gone to be replaced by a TV, which seems an idiotic decision to say the least. Service is still a little random at times, but friendly of sorts.
Trying to think of a better pub in Teddington - I can't. The Tide End Cottage is nice, but small. The Adelaide is probably the best pub in the area, and deserves to be more popular.
27 May 2005 09:55
This is an absolutely enormous pub - Still a Wetherspoons though, so it just means you can cram in more alkies and deadbeats.
Looks like a warzone after a certain time on a Friday night..
22 May 2005 18:07
This used to be a decent pub, but sadly was bought up by "The shite pub refit company" or whatever they are called - Hence I would avoid now at all costs..
22 May 2005 18:05
An excellent irish themed pub, bit rough round the edges, but all the better for it. Plus it is on the alleyway that has all the Cardiff chippys and kebabs so is handy after you stagger out.
22 May 2005 18:04
This is an excellent pub. Very traditional, as the other comments say it is a proper pub, full of dribbling old Welshmen - Which is not a bad thing.
22 May 2005 18:02
This is a good pub, one of the best in the centre of Cardiff. A very old pub, opposite the Castle, it is worth the walk past all the hellish bars full of chavs to get to it. Is frequented by normal people, and usually a lot of crumpet. Also has a good quiz machine.
22 May 2005 18:00
Ah, a Welsh pub with Goats in the title, you can't beat it.
Quite a nice pub, one of the few pubs in the centre that is not a horrendous chain bar.
22 May 2005 17:56
It could be argued that this is currently the best pub in Feltham! All the others are really rotten and this one is average, so it must be the best...
18 May 2005 14:22
The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
The Hawke has recently had it's kitchen and menu refurbished - It was good before, but having visited again, I can confirm it is still very good.
Had a nice meal that cost an identical amount to a microwaved abomination I had in the nearby Magpie.
I would go in here instead.
Can still be a bit cramped for a proper drinks session, and can be hard to get to the bar, but food is main strength and staff always friendly.
18 May 2005 14:13
Hmm.. Pub gets a unfavourable refit, next thing there is a comment clearly posted by someone linked with the new management.
Might want to ignore the previous comment - it has false staff praise written all over it. It happens on many pubs on this site, usually rubbish ones, and I don't know why because it is always obvious.
18 May 2005 14:11
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
A very nice pub. Watch out for the random barmaid though - There must be a general shortage of bar staff in the area as many of the pubs down in Lower Sunbury seem to have acquired Eastern European bar staff who quite frankly, have trouble understanding the most basic of orders!
This is a very good pub though, especially in the summer when you can gaze out onto the river.
15 May 2005 20:39
Yes it is a Wetherspoons, but didn't seem to have quite it's local quota of toothless chavs and alcoholics that Wetherspoons usually have.
Seemed OK, and ate a perfectly acceptable meal here too..
15 May 2005 20:37
A lovely old fashioned pub. Look out for the nice jugs. Seems "local" but patrons very friendly towards first time visitors. Didn't eat but looked nice.
All in all, a pub as it should be.
15 May 2005 20:35
The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Rubbish anonymous - The White Horse is a very welcoming pub. I would say however, that it is a mans pub - There will literally be no women in here apart from the Landlady on many nights, hence it might not be ideal for your crappy bar/Magpie type of crowd.
This is a perfect example of a proper pub though - And it always has the unexpected - Last night a Jazz quartet were playing! A bit rough round the edges, but a refreshing change from the sterile, chain type of pub which outnumber this place by millions..
13 May 2005 11:29
Went in after a long absence, still not impressed.
Many comments about the food being nice - I would hotly dispute this - I had a very overpriced and clearly microwaved meal, big prices and small portions is what you get.
The pub itself is OK, the service was very friendly I have to say - But most of the other pubs in Sunbury are superior and the food is miles better in the FlowerPot up the road - Go there instead.
13 May 2005 11:23
Sorry bout that Cleversaz, I see from your profile that you are indeed a lady, no offence meant!!
8 May 2005 19:23
Visited again, and is still the best pub in Richmond in my opinion - It won't be to all tastes for sure, but for a proper English pub, this is it..
8 May 2005 18:52
After a second visit, perhaps not as much of a Crap pub as I first thought. In fact it has a lot going for it.
The view is an obvious attraction, plus it has an old fashioned bar billiards table in full use, which is a rare treat these days. Very dark inside and can feel cramped when it is busy.
Don't order food when it is really busy, as it will take years to arrive. However, the food was nice when it eventually arrived.
All in all, a decent pub.
8 May 2005 18:49
I found this pub by complete accident as I was lost in the backstreets of Richmond - and it was a pleasant surprise.
An old fashioned pub, smoky, with some old punters and traditional decor - Quite nice to go to a proper pub in Richmond. Service was quite slow, but it was busy. Perhaps not worth a visit if smoking bothers you, but seems a good pub to me..
8 May 2005 18:45
Some websites seem to suggest that this place and Baroque is one and the same - It isn't, they are completely separate.
The Castlebar is an excellent pub, with big outdoor tables surrounded by loads of patio heaters. Would fully recommend a visit..
7 May 2005 15:41
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
OK, OK, This is not the place for an English Flags=Racist discussion, which I do not agree with by the way - You should be able to fly your flag with pride. Sadly, in Feltham and surrounding, this often means something else. There is a National Front problem round here. Nuff said..
But obviously this pub has no connections with anything dodgy like that! This pub does have mostly positive comments, so I will return and give it another go methinks, perhaps of an evening,
4 May 2005 21:52
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
Nothing wrong with pubs frequented by LOCAL people as you put it Kaz, and I never said there was. You make the pub sound a hotbed for community spirit and I congratulate you for that.
However, you have to judge by what you find. If you think a bunch of Chavs playing their dodgy boom box at earth shattering volume in a pub car park is something to be proud of.. They were also drinking, and then drove off as well - Not that you would condone that I am sure.
Therefore I recommend, not to put off first time visitors like me:
1- Discourage behaviour such as above
2- Encourage your staff to smile a little - I was met with a very unwelcoming surly look.
3- Put up signs saying "Welcome back Brother in Law from the Navy"
Forgive me for associating the flags thing with a right wing pub, it is easily done, especially if all the pubs in the area that do the same ARE right wing pubs (ever been in the Three Fishes?)
However, if as you say, all race, creeds and religions are welcome, then I will give the pub another try - Hey, they might even have "Ebony and Ivory" on the jukebox when I get there eh?
4 May 2005 20:51
The lagers in this pub are excellent, as they are in every Sam Smiths pub - If you just want your bog standard Stella or Carling go to one of the trillions of other pubs that offer such wares..
Best pub in the area by far, and miles better than the London Apprentice, which has some of the worst service in the area.
4 May 2005 20:33
The Teddington Arms, Teddington
Seems a nice enough pub, although the correlation between Menu Price and food portion got lost somewhere.
Personally not to my tastes, i would much prefer the Adelaide or the Railway - If you want to pull some laydeez theres more chance in here though as all the posh fanny congregate here drinking their chilled Chablis.
2 May 2005 18:09
Have to leave another comment on here - Went in at the weekend and enjoyed a very nice meal. Service was outstanding, which makes a refreshing change.
This pub is working hard and is overtaking many of it's main rivals - I would easily say it is better than the Cabbage Patch and the Hook Line and Sinker, and is probably the best pub of it's kind in Twickenham.
2 May 2005 17:56
The Grizzly Bear, Sunbury on Thames
I'm amazed at some of the positive comments on here - I must have gone to a different pub.
Baring in mind someone I know said that the Clare tavern was "the worst pub I had ever been in", they clearly have improved this pub since it's name change though.
Many have commented on the friendly atmosphere = I disagree - The pub seemed OK on the inside, quite dark with a giant wooden bear which is a nice touch. Was served by a very disinterested looking barmaid. Went to sit outside and was treated to some "sounds" by a bunch of chavs car stereo, whilst they were supping pints.
Therein lies the problem with this pub - It is essentially a pub for chavs - I am always suspicious of pubs with lots St Georges Flags and Union Jacks, which are a complete giveaway about the white trash/chav slement likely to be inside. This pub is by no means that bad on the chav-ometer, certainly all pubs in Feltham are worse. But as Sunbury goes, this place is one of the less friendly pubs, and has a similar vibe to the similarly unwelcoming Three Fishes.
2 May 2005 17:53
Having now visited the revamped Albany, a more unlikely refit I have yet to see - They have lost all the toothless old regulars and pool tables and gained a very fancy pub, decorated in an All Bar Oney style.
Not all bad, certainly better than the recently revamped Cabbage Patch, so I would go here rather than there.
30 Apr 2005 22:25
Now appears closed for good. Will it ever re-open? This place has executive flats written all over it..
29 Apr 2005 16:16
Whoever did this to the Hat and Feather should be taken away and shot.
Morally wrong - Please avoid and let this place get what it deserves.
29 Apr 2005 14:23
For some reason, the one pub in Twickenham that I had never been in, like Mike2004.
Wasn't all bad - There are far worse pubs in Twickenham. Was very very quiet though which didn't bode well.
All in all, an average boozer.
29 Apr 2005 10:49
Went in for the first time after the refit and it has gone badly wrong.
The Patch always had a certain uniqueness, homeliness and character - It now feels like an All Bar One.
Avoid like the plague, this is now just another Twickenham average bar - See Hook Line and Sinker, The Bear etc. - It's the same pub. Shame on the owners.
29 Apr 2005 10:47
The Albany was seemingly gone forever, I last went in here in it's old version years ago, which was a dodgy ropey old pub indeed. Then it appeared to be turning into a block of flats.
Now from the ashes, it appears to have re-opened as a "Gastro-Pub" Review of the new version to follow soon..
29 Apr 2005 10:43
Had an OK meal in here, but the pint wasn't great. Also has loud music playing, but Video screens playing un-related music - WHY - Synch them up or turn them off.
25 Apr 2005 19:23
A well hidden and seemingly decent pub. But like Mike, the flooring made it feel a bit too Slug and Lettuce for my liking.
25 Apr 2005 19:22
Bit of an odd pub. Looks lovely from the outside, a real country local. Go in, and the layout feels unfriendly and it is very dark.
Staff seemed friendly, but for some reason I can't quite put my finger on, was a disappointment.
25 Apr 2005 19:20
Quite an un-twickenham like pub, old and traditional, but this is a good thing. You could quite happily shuttle back and forth between here and the Eel Pie over the road.
12 Apr 2005 08:49
This always used to be a restaurant, but has now been changed into a new bar/restaurant type of arrangement. The downstairs bar serves their own brand of weak fosters-esque lager at high prices.
The food is good, although expensive for what it is. Not a patch on the old place on this site (El Torito)
12 Apr 2005 08:47
It is an improvement on the All Bar One (how could it not be?) but it still has a whiff of the manufactured all bar oney vibe about it. I think the refit they have done is very nice, don't get me wrong, but the clientele is still the old one (ie. people not really interested in proper pubs) and the furniture still looks they took a mass visit to Ikea.
There are a lot worse pubs around the Twickenham area (the HLS, Hobgoblin, etc.) but this place is still distinctly average in my opinion.
11 Apr 2005 09:23
I like this pub. Has it's best incarnation since the Hogshead days. Service in my experience was friendly. The sofas were very comfortable and they have an excellent wurlitzer jukebox.
Was deadly empty though for a Saturday, so I fear another refit may be not long coming..
11 Apr 2005 09:20
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
The refit which stalled at first, seems to be slowly working - Went in on a Sunday evening and was busy. Now has a fancy fishtank installed. Service was friendly. All in all, much improved.
11 Apr 2005 09:19
Went back in after a long absence and still a fine pub. Most "Irish" pubs are phoney O'Neill esque joints - This place manages to capture the atmosphere of a proper Irish boozer, And I am not even sure why.
Has an excellent atmosphere, and is one of the best pubs in the area bar none - If you are in Hounslow, just take the 285 bus down to the Bridge and avoid all the awful pubs there.
11 Apr 2005 09:17
Murdered was he? I'm not surprised, it's a dreadful pub.
Now under new ownership I believe - Hence all the beers were off when I went in. A lost cause and no mistake.
4 Apr 2005 16:38
Looks a much nicer pub from the outside than it is inside - Is actually quite rough and chavvy, go to the Blucher instead.
4 Apr 2005 12:33
The Triple Crown Inn is more expensive than the White Cross? Thats 2 pubs I won't be visiting in future.
The location is all the White Cross has going for it - Everything else about it would make it an average ripoff Richmond pub. Go to the Watermans Arms around the corner instead, it has a far better atmosphere and you'll definitely get a better pint.
1 Apr 2005 12:42
The Leicester Arms, Piccadilly Circus
Bit of an odd pub, looks quite good from the outside, but lacks soul - I suppose because of it's locations there is little "community" in here and it strikes you more as a traditional pub meant for tourists.
31 Mar 2005 16:42
A proper old mans pub, ring the bell for service.
Hence a bit quiet and intimidating in a way, but well worth a visit.
29 Mar 2005 16:05
Quite a nice pub, with a particularly good restaurant.
Definitely worth a visit, especially if you are staying at the really good hotel next door.
Shuts in the afternoons though.
29 Mar 2005 15:53
A pub that doubles up as a hotel, was not that impressed to be honest. Barmaid first of all short changed me by 5 then under charged me by 5, was packed and menu was nothing special.
I would advise eating in the pub over the road instead.
29 Mar 2005 15:03
The Atlantic Bar and Grill, Soho
Bit of a poncy joint, if you can get past the doormen there are basically 2 bars - One is quite relaxed, one is massive and noisy, full of blokes buying chav girls champagne.
Not bad, particularly the quiet bar which has a nice enough vibe, but this is a "trendy" bar and hence you could not drink in here all evening unless you were literally rich,
29 Mar 2005 14:51
The Hogshead, Leicester Square
Not bad for a Hogshead, always a bit too loud though and full of thieves looking for bags to nick - I wouldn't spend an evening here, but as a meeting point or a quick pint it is OK.
29 Mar 2005 14:47
The Botley Hill Farmhouse, Warlingham
Situated out on the Surrey Countryside, this has a very beautiful location. However, that is mostly what it has going for it - The menu makes a big thing of it's fish, and the prices are not cheap, but the quality is poor - I had a pate starter that was like wallpaper paste and a cod and chips which I have had better in a Wetherspoons (it was the thinnest Cod I have tasted)
Therefore, as a pub to pop into in the summer to enjoy the scenary I recommend, but not for much else. It's location miles out of the way also means someone would have to drive so you can't really have a proper session there either.
29 Mar 2005 10:05
Went back in here after a longish absence and was surprised - Some pubs take on an entirely different fell during the day as they do during the night. This place always feels hot, too well lit and cramped at night.
On a Saturday lunchtime though, it was a different story - Enjoyed a more than half decent lunch and pint whilst watching the footy.
Would definitely recommend a visit therefore in the day.
21 Mar 2005 15:41
A big pub, a bit off the beaten track for Twickenham, hidden on the wrong side of the green.
Worth a visit.
20 Mar 2005 18:32
"Found" the bigger bit of this pub to the right - It is a shame that the staff service is below-par in here, as it is seemingly a great rugby pub.
18 Mar 2005 09:16
If anyone has been in the White Horse in Sunbury, this is basically the same pub transported to Richmond, but a lot busier and with more mental customers.
A real un-richmond like Richmond pub, the decor is as far away from Pitcher and Piano-ville than you could get. There was also live music, from a man on acoustic guitar playing barely recognisable and neverending versions of Eagles tunes.
I usually eat and drink this type of pub, but I do agree with some of the earlier comments about the unwelcoming vibe.
18 Mar 2005 09:11
I am not a big fan of Guinness but even I could taste how good a pint it was in here - Therefore if you are a fan of the black stuff I would definitely recommend.
18 Mar 2005 08:56
Is this officially the worst pub on this website? I think it may well be the worst pub ever..
17 Mar 2005 16:07
Tucked away from other pubs, is a decent joint though, and worth a visit as long as you dont' let the locals scare you - Don't worry, they will get used to you eventually.
17 Mar 2005 16:05
A bog standard Old Orleans, and gets plenty of trade in a place like Bath.
17 Mar 2005 16:02
The last comment confirms that in over 2 years this place is still as bad as ever.
Attitude is - If you question us or complain, leave, you are in the wrong.
This pub is wrong wrong wrong.
17 Mar 2005 15:44
Another unlikely face lift, I remember this pub when it was full of rough and ready folk drinking luminous cider and sale of dubious wares were available in the main bar.
Sadly now a thing of the past - Another pub succumbed to the refit brigade, although the drug dealers won't be missed obviously.
16 Mar 2005 16:57
Why oh why oh why oh why oh why don't BREWERIES LEAVE THINGS ALONE.
The marvellous pub quiz has been stopped. The sunday roast you could get till the evening, has been stopped.
Therefore, I will not be frequenting this pub again. Even the barstaff advised us to complain about the changes.
14 Mar 2005 21:51
Agree with Ray, the service is chronically bad.
What is it with these people - Do you think they really think that service does not matter?
10 Mar 2005 07:44
The Triple Crown Inn, Richmond
A very well hidden pub, I would guess would be a good atmosphere for watching Rugby, considering the title.
10 Mar 2005 07:36
The Three Horseshoes, Shepperton
A real blokes smokey pub, ladies who like wine go elsewhere.
6 Mar 2005 13:10
Had a decent all day breakfast and pint in here, seemed an OK pub, nothing too special, but perfectly adequate.
6 Mar 2005 13:09
A large pub in the Bermuda triangle that is Upper Halliford, seems to be proud of it's restaurant which is big and beefeater-esque. Haven't eaten there so can't comment on it's quality. Pub seems OK, but is packed with Kids on a Sunday.
6 Mar 2005 13:08
The Warrington Hotel, Maida Vale
A very ornate and spectacularly good pub - If only it was nearer civilisation!
6 Mar 2005 13:06
A real quirky pub, with it's little passages, well worth a visit.
6 Mar 2005 13:05
Having background music, decided by the barstaff is a very BAD THING, as you finish up listening to the Sugababes - Personally, I would rather have no background music or better still, install a jukebox.
27 Feb 2005 20:14
Browns Restaurant and Bar, Leicester Square
A restaurant really, not a bar and definitely not a pub.
Perhaps OK for a pre-meal drink, but little else.
27 Feb 2005 11:06
The Salisbury, Leicester Square
Is in "Londons Historic Pubs" And sure, it's decor is nice. But as far as having a drink in here, forget it - Always too crowded. Who are all these people!
27 Feb 2005 11:05
I think awhalpin needs to chill out.. Her story is irrelevant, customers are customers.
For the record though, I found the service in here very friendly and helpful.
A strangely overlooked pub, most people go to the Orange Tree instead. But this pub is not all bad, nothing out of the ordinary, but a perfectly respectable pub, and not a Edwards/Pitcher and Piano type vibe like you get elsewhere.
27 Feb 2005 11:01
The Heath Street Bar, Hampstead
Although this is a "new" design, I like it. Is in no way an All Bar one, has a slightly run down and far more relaxed vibe than a chain bar, there's no way you'd get a cheap and cheerful Chinese menu in an All Bar one.
Worth a visit, especially good to watch sport as you have the big screens.
27 Feb 2005 10:57
Well hidden place, but unexpectedly massive inside - Absolutely packed as well, what looks like a quiet old mans pub from the outside.
A decent pub.
27 Feb 2005 10:55
A very old fashioned pub, with it's 2 parts split into the lounge and public bar. Full of people whose livers have seen better days, always the sign of a good pub. A proper old pub, not many still around these days..
27 Feb 2005 10:54
The Freemasons Arms, Hampstead
A complete disappointment.. Virtually a restaurant now, what was a traditional pub has been gutted and turned into a wine bar. Avoid at all costs.
27 Feb 2005 10:53
It's a good pub - Especially the area surrounding it is filled with rubbish pubs/bars.
Particularly like the interior in this place - Olde dark wood
18 Feb 2005 21:14
Ooh I love me merlot and lobster I do.
Seems you are almost as fond of a Stereotype as I am Charty?
I can give a specific example of the "right wing" attitude in this pub - Went in here with an Asian colleague and the looks he was getting from the rest of the punters told it's own story. Again, perhaps a one off, but you can only judge by what you find.
18 Feb 2005 21:06
Dissenters don't live in Islington or Muswell Hill.
Was trying to be diplomatic, and not say "The Shire Horse is a pub frequented by BNP and Football Hooligans" - But it seems you didn't read between the lines..
However, as you seem to rate it, perhaps the pub has changed recently, if so, I apologise.
18 Feb 2005 21:01
Food is rubbish- Had a mixed time in this pub, enjoyed some good evenings in here, also been involved in some aggro. Never seem to get a decent pint in here either. Yet, yet.. It is a nice location so in summer is definitely worth a visit, perhaps in the afternoon when not so busy.
18 Feb 2005 13:47
Yes, the price is hiked up when the rugby is on. Nearby curry houses are particularly adept at this, but then again, no local in their right mind would go out drinking in Twickenham on a rugby day so perhaps there is nothing wrong with the price hike.
This is a fine pub though that deserves cherishing - Offers something nowhere else in Twickenham does.
18 Feb 2005 13:44
The prices in here are astronimical - Which is a shame as it is a good pub. Seems to be slowly in decline though, the iffy refit, the food has definitely got worse (particularly the Sunday Roast)
I suppose because the Patch is the traditional Twickenham rugby pub, they make so much money from that they don't care about the punters the rest of the year.. I just hope no-one builds a pub nearer the stadium!
Worth a mention as well is the nightclub upstairs, one of the few later night venues available in Twickenham - However, tried to get in the other night and at 10 entry for an upstairs room in a pub, I was never going in - Drop your prices for gods sake, talk about delusions of grandeur!
18 Feb 2005 13:42
I don't think this pub was a Firkin that I know of - However it was a Hogshead, then they did a refit, then another until finally turning it into it's current state.
Not bad, but nothing different to much of Twickers pubs..
18 Feb 2005 13:35
Wouldn't it be nice if a new pub was built to replace this rubbish old one?
Don't hold your breath though..
18 Feb 2005 13:33
Universities student bar, open to non students during the day. Has a good vibe, traditionally the Parade Bar was a better venue for hardended drinkers, but then the University ruined it.
The plug therefore is pretty good as these types of venues go.
18 Feb 2005 13:25
I thought this pub was fantastic - It's very traditional inside, the right side of shabby, service was quick enough for my liking, there is a quiz machine, screen for sport and jukebox.
Ticks all the boxes for me, seems a great "proper" pub, definitely intend to go back for a proper session..
18 Feb 2005 09:45
The Park Lodge Hotel, Teddington
The service was a bit random at times but it was friendly, and I found the food very good.
This place is basically like an All Bar One, but with half divided into a restaurant - Quite a good idea considering some of the good pubs nearby, if you require grub then it is an option, and it was very busy when I went in on a Thursday night.
If you want a night out drinking, I would suggest somewhere else nearby though
18 Feb 2005 09:43
The Toad at Two Rivers, Staines
There is a bit of a paradox here - I agree with many of the comments about the Toad and it's clientele and Staines as a whole (Chav Central of the West!)
But but.. In no way would I wish this venue to close down, merely for the fact that there are pubs aimed at some areas of the population (such as this one) and others aimed for others, and there needs to be both.
I visited the Toad, and quickly realised that it was aimed at a lower level intellectually and entertainment wise than I enjoy, but then Staines is predominately that type of place at the moment - People who don't like violence, bad music, gassy lager and ill-mannered people with names like Tyler or Summer should go elsewhere.
However, I defend the right of these people to go to the Toad or any similar venue and enjoy yourself!
17 Feb 2005 11:31
Cleversaz likes the Hob Goblin so he might be telling the truth about his age.
The Sorting room is not a bad pub of it's type, in that as it is fairly new it is not as tatty as most Wetherspoons and the Moon over the road seems to attract all the alkies.
Therefore, as a meeting place, or a stop off, seems perfectly reasonable to me..
14 Feb 2005 13:29
STAFF praise does not COUNT - Let the PUNTERS speak for THEMSELVES.
Having the gents toilet opposite the bar is not a good thing - You can be standing having a drink and get a very unsavoury view/smell
Haven't eaten in here yet though, so will reserve judgement
14 Feb 2005 13:16
More of an eaterie than a bar, decorated in a "Hogsheady" type of way. Was OK, But not so happy at the barman saying there were no tables when a tumbleweed was clearly blowing through the venue.. Not good service methinks..
14 Feb 2005 13:11
The Toad at Two Rivers, Staines
"ppl" "dis" "fri n sat nite"
You may not be a chav but you certainly type like one.
Fairplay, there should be a range of bars for everyone - If the Toad shuts all the Chavs will just congregate at some other poor joint..
11 Feb 2005 16:59
Went in here after a long long abscence and it was still truly awful - Hobgoblin aside, the worst pub in Twickenham.
Didn't even finish my pint - Whatever they have in the pumps churns out a truly awful pint of 1664 - Tasted nothing like it should and my partners Carling was the same - Gassy chemical vomit - Some would say Carling is like that anyway, but in here it is 100 times worse..
But then all the weekend Chav punters drink Bacardi Breezers and Aftershocks anyway, so why should the barstaff care?
Avoid at all costs..
11 Feb 2005 09:14
Anything had to be an improvement on the old All Bar one, but they have made a pretty decent fist if the refurb - Losing the old Brand name is half the job done, but they have also decorated to make it more homely - The bar looked pretty much identical to what it was before.
I am pleased they have refitted, as it was packed when I went in and this means the Hook Line and Sinker over the road is hopefully losing trade! Woo-Hoo!
Worth a visit.
11 Feb 2005 09:11
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
True enough Trog, but unfriendliness manifests itself in many ways. the bizarre barman combination of skinhead moustache + right wing tattoos made me briefly wonder whether the pub had gone either for the pink pound or the BNP - I was too scared to ask.
Having said that, they are one of the few pubs in Lower Sunbury that shows sport on a Sat afternoon, so if you want a couple of pints and Gillette Soccer Saturday, it is not all bad..
7 Feb 2005 12:53
Not sure about the comments about the unfriendly staff, but seemed OK when I went in. A nice local, in a style that feels like a pub should do.
Do good beer as well, but the barmaid had clearly never served a bloody mary, or was lazy, as the worcester sauce and tabasco was not offered..
If it had a decent jukebox, or even a jukebox, would rate it even higher.
3 Feb 2005 12:26
A bog standard, but seemingly very popular Hogshead.
Does the job - Food is pretty good, and they show the footy.
31 Jan 2005 16:58
Don't be put off by thought of going to an Irish Bar in Madrid - This place is very lively once it warms up after midnight, plays decent music, serves massive doses of vodka and is full of women of many nationalities on the pull.
Just watch out for the English Language teachers from Oldham though.
31 Jan 2005 16:57
Go here in an evening now and it is like the Bar Scene in Star Wars.. All sorts of alien life and a lot of unsavoury goings on.
A shame, but has gone way downhill, mainly due to the current landlord, who has had a long run at it now and couldn't make it grottier if he tried.
I second Mikes comment - Go to the White Hart
21 Jan 2005 13:10
A better branch of the well known chain, attached to the Quality hotel so if you are staying there it is basically the hotel bar.
21 Jan 2005 13:06
Old Orleans, Kingston Upon Thames
Yer bog standard Old Orleans, OK if you want to see hen nights or people on the pull, no other real reason to go there..
14 Jan 2005 13:03
The Prince Blucher, Twickenham
New Years Eve update - All other pubs as far as I know were ticket only - Not the Blucher, who welcomed all, including families, hence great atmosphere and the best new years in a pub in living memory - Well done!
2 Jan 2005 20:30
A modernish bar, with low lighting and the usual wooden strip flooring common to all such places. Hence, not really a proper pub, more of a bar
31 Dec 2004 10:57
a bit of a rubbish pub, full of smoke and blokes appearing to have been drinking all day.
31 Dec 2004 10:53
The Bricklayers Arms, Aylesbury
Seemed a nice old fashioned pub, with low ceilinga and traditional decor.
The only downside was the rubbish music which veered between Robbie Williams and an unidentified rubbish aylesbury band.
Would recommend a visit however.
31 Dec 2004 10:51
Excellent pub, in good location. Food is excellent, and service was exceedingly friendly - The Old Ship take note..
20 Dec 2004 18:23
Looks very appealing from the outside, was strangely soulless on the inside, although perhaps we caught it on an off night..
20 Dec 2004 18:21
It's a beefeater! Seems better than the Hare and Hounds, service very friendly.
20 Dec 2004 18:19
The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Actually, I was too harsh in my earlier post - The dodgy Feltham punters tend to stuck to pubs in Feltham - Quite a mix of people in here, and can certainly look intimidating from the outside - But once you get in there, it's not bad - Beers ok, decent music, quiz machine etc.
12 Dec 2004 21:34
This is not a pub or "bar" in any sense of the word.
However, it is a pretty nice restaurant, which I would recommend.
8 Dec 2004 10:48
Used to like this pub, but went in recently and it was full of leary blokes and smoke.
May have been a one-off, but has put me off for a while.
6 Dec 2004 15:18
The refit seems to have been done well - However, my first impressions were ruined by possibly the service, the bald guy serving was as rude to me as any person has ever been in a pub - Hence I drank up quickly and left...
4 Dec 2004 19:09
Yer same old crappy chain pub. Walk up the road to the Kings Head instead..
29 Nov 2004 14:53
This pub is definitely not the best in the world. The landlord may be great though, I haven't been in here in a while.
I'd love to know of anyone without a Yorkshire/Northern accent who has gone in this pub and come out alive..
29 Nov 2004 14:46
Hugh, please try at least to sound like remotely like a punter rather than giving it a blatant staff plug!
29 Nov 2004 14:38
Has deteriorated in recent months - Most pubs have a sign behind the bar banning smoking - The R&C now has one saying "No Fighting"! Says it all really..
26 Nov 2004 16:01
Stop press.. Actually had a decent evening in this pub last week. They appear to have brought in a pub quiz, played some decent music and lowered their prices - Is someone finally trying to make a success of this place??! Keep trying please and your rating will go up!
26 Nov 2004 15:58
Those last 3 comments sound suspiciously like staff praise - No one actually leaves genuine comments like that! I'd ignore them if I was you..
Annoys me intensely how this place has suddenly got delusions of grandeur - Especially comical juding what a dodgy boozer it has always been and the number of chavs hanging out in the bar area.
26 Nov 2004 15:56
Quite an old fashioned pub, off the beaten track a bit, so you have to go off the main roads to find it.
This is a good thing, as it has a more homely vibe than many of the pubs down the road, and is worth a stop off.
26 Nov 2004 15:52
Have to agree with Tony here, that whilst I like the pub, the staff leave a lot to be desired with their ideas about "Service"
25 Nov 2004 14:39
The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Glad to report that although the outside of the pub looks shiny and new, the inside has been left untouched!
12 Nov 2004 10:43
The Toad at Two Rivers, Staines
An awful awful place, full of the worst kind of Staines Chav.
If they are going to turn it Tapas then I am mightily relieved
10 Nov 2004 15:01
The Jubilee, Sunbury on Thames
Mikes comments must have been offensive as they are no more!
Can't remember what he said, but I am sure he meant nothing against the staff personally. The problem in here boils down to a few key factors:
1-Poor service - Slow and unable to pour drinks properly
2- Quality - The beer itself was disgusting
3- Cleanliness - The little garden on the front actually stank of sewage.
I have nothing against old pubs with characters in by any means, in fact I love pubs like this, but this place was just really unpleasant - If it wasn't opposite the racecourse it would have been closed down years ago.
10 Nov 2004 14:57
The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Now benefited from a smart paint job, looks revamped - Haven't seen if they have redone the interior yet though..
9 Nov 2004 12:24
As Feltham pubs go, this is probably one of the best.. But Feltham is sorely lacking a good pub, thats for sure... The point I am clumsily trying to make, is that there is a whole demographic of people in the area not catered for by the current pubs of Feltham - And the Green Man is part of that..
5 Nov 2004 14:03
A pikey from Acton??! That did make me laugh!
The other extreme of the Chav scale methinks - And just as bad..
It's still a horrible chain pub - There are plenty of better places nearby..
5 Nov 2004 13:42
The Slug and Lettuce, Richmond
"A lively, trendy and happening place"!
Joshua, how I laughed. I doubt whether that would be anyones description of a Slug and Lettuce.
Other pubs in Richmond are busy too - Better ones than this dive.
4 Nov 2004 12:35
Tiger Tiger, Piccadilly Circus
Or as it should be better known, Chav Chav.
I am glad there are such bars as this to keep the ignorant proles out of the decent drinking establishments.
2 Nov 2004 13:22
I have changed my mind - but having gone in again recently it had improved no-end, certainly on a par with some of the competition..
1 Nov 2004 16:59
This should be exhibited on how to keep a pub in it's original style, whilst not letting it get old and rundown.
Magnificent big pub, with traditional fittings and a decent pint. And a Youngs pub as well, which makes it success even more surprising..
1 Nov 2004 16:57
A good pub, decor was a bit too Bright and all-bar oney for my liking, but was happy with everything else about the place..
25 Oct 2004 12:27
Seems a decent pub - Had an excellent pint of real ale, service was good and the ambience OK also.
The other customers were normal, which after just going in the Shakespeare was a blessed relief.
25 Oct 2004 12:25
A truly truly horrendous pub on every level.
As it is next to Victoria station, it was full of a weird mix of normal looking people nervously guarding their luggage, Football fans passing through eyeballing people, and total down and out's quietly drinking.
The decor and the SMELL - The toilets and whole downstairs reek of piss.
The service was slow and poor. The pint I had (but did not finish) was possibly the worst pint of Lager I have ever had - Clearly their hygiene does not stretch to cleaning the pipes out either.
Almost the worst pub I have ever had the misfortune to go in. Saw signs advertising to have your Xmas party here - Either they are wildly optimistic or incredibly cheap, because I would rather have my function out with the dossers in the gutter than this flea-ridden piss-smelling sewer of a pub.
25 Oct 2004 12:19
Outside of the pub is classic olde style pub, as it should be.
Inside, the decor is not too bad and the beer is decent.
Downsides are the piped crappy music (install a jukebox for gods sake) and a particular problem is the dossers coming in and hassling customers for change and fags. Although that is more of a problem with the dodgy Hammersmith area than this pub.
At least this is a proper pub, rather than the abomination of chain hell that you get down the rest of the high street.
19 Oct 2004 11:13
What time was it you were refused service? Was it busy? To be fair, bars are not really places for 4yr olds are they...
Having said that, I suppose if it was quiet and early then they could have exercised a bit of common sense...
12 Oct 2004 17:00
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
Been in here recently and the locals were VERY unfriendly.
Definitely a locals pub - No other pub in Sunbury will you encounter the same hostility - Possibly because this pub clearly has lock ins after hours..
4 Oct 2004 16:47
Seems a decent pub, and quite traditional which is good. Always packed, which says a lot.
4 Oct 2004 16:38
Gay pub - I am not, but have been in here for a pint and it was OK - I am possibly not the target customer though...
4 Oct 2004 16:36
Now closed for business - Some sort of refit is being carried out - I fear the worst...
4 Oct 2004 16:28
Surprisingly good pub, hidden away from the ponces that frequent all the other riverside pubs.
A jukebox would be nice, but their selection of music was very good. Service was friendly also.
Just goes to show that not all Richmond pubs have to be a ripoff (see White Cross etc.)
4 Oct 2004 16:27
Hang on Zod.. So you are saying that the beer is more expensive in Richmond because it is higher quality??
Sounds nonsense to me. You would expect to pay more for a pint in Richmond for sure, but quality has bugger all to do with it.
24 Sep 2004 13:57
The Moon Under Water, Hounslow
TC - I have nothing against Feltham per se (I live there actually)- It is the pubs of Feltham and Hounslow that leave a lot to be desired. I also have teeth thank you.
And the last comment made me laugh out loud - If that is not a Wetherspoons employee I am an otter.
The Moon is actually one of the better pubs in Hounslow - And the fact that a Wetherspoons is one of the best says it all really.
24 Sep 2004 13:46
I don't blame them for having a sign banning baseball caps - They might as well just have one saying "NO CHAVS" - But then most of Hounslow would be excluded...
24 Sep 2004 13:41
Very very dull pub. A very depressing place at closing time
21 Sep 2004 14:07
Packed in here on a Saturday - Go to one of the quieter ones.
A good pub though, as it is Sam Smiths.
21 Sep 2004 14:06
The Bricklayers Arms, Fitzrovia
A good old Sam Smiths pub, offering fine ales at cheap prices.
21 Sep 2004 14:05
Sam Smiths pub, quite packed but has to be the best pub so close to Oxford St.
21 Sep 2004 14:00
Marvellous Sam Smiths ales, a decent pub, but there are better pubs from this brewery in the area.
There was a very odd smell in the main bar.
21 Sep 2004 13:59
The Horse and Groom, Great Portland Street
Seemed a good pub, although was slightly tainted by witnessing a fight at 3 in the afternoon.
However, not the pubs fault.
21 Sep 2004 13:58
You wouldn't know this pub was here - Down a little backstreet.
A nice surprise, Sam Smiths so is great beer, out of the way so no dodgy punters.
21 Sep 2004 13:56
Nice little local pub, bit Irish, one for the oldies.
Good spot for an afternoon quiet pint.
21 Sep 2004 13:55
What the hell, dodgy staff rating alerts!
This is a pub in a shopping mall... Say no mor
21 Sep 2004 13:53
The Hammersmith Ram, Hammersmith
I second Chris's comments - If you want a crappy bar, go to Edwards - This is a pub, and not a bad little one at that.
21 Sep 2004 13:52
The Duke of Cornwall, Hammersmith
I was suspicious before going in here, as it looked like it had been given a dodgy ikea refit.
However, was pleasantly surprised. Has a nice vibe, a good jukebox where you can hear the music (essential in a good pub) and a quiz machine (although it did rip me off a fiver).
All in all, not bad.
21 Sep 2004 13:49
Reasonable large-ish pub, a bit on the chav side (witness the Microwaved Fish and Chips for 2.99 menu) but is passable for a stopoff before going somewhere else.
Needs a jukebox as well.
21 Sep 2004 13:47
Think I must have got comments on the wrong pub originally..
This place is cheap, but not that cheerful - There are many other nicer pubs to go in around here.
21 Sep 2004 13:39
OK Peter the landlord, fair point well made. In light of this info. I may return for another pint (of something other than Heineken..)
I'll also up my rating
Heineken sound as if they are getting away with daylight robbery mind you.
15 Sep 2004 16:35
Decent Scream pub, great jukebox, food and drink.
Full of students, but they are friendly folk.
14 Sep 2004 14:45
The Mad Bishop and Bear, Paddington
A station pub is usually depressing and dodgy beyond belief (see Bonapartes in Waterloo for example) but as it goes this place is not too bad.
No other reason to drink here apart from waiting for a train mind you.
14 Sep 2004 14:21
Totally Chav pub, but then it is next to Victoria Station. Packed full of tourists, undesirables and JOCK SHOUTING
14 Sep 2004 14:18
A historic pub, tucked away from view. Takes years to get served, but quite enjoyed it nonetheless.
13 Sep 2004 13:24
Dodgy pub that is a regular meeting place for Football hooligans.
Might want to give it a miss on Football days then.
13 Sep 2004 11:23
Absolutely insane pub - Crammed full of Royalist trinkets, this is where the Handlebar club meet.
Probably unlike any other pub I have been in, and therefore well worth a visit, even if it is like taking a tab of acid.
13 Sep 2004 11:17
The Salisbury, Leicester Square
Looks like a marvellous pub - The decor and that. However, not sure about the actual pub itself - Service was very slow, no decent beers and very packed. So obviously popular, but not great.
13 Sep 2004 11:14
The Green Man and French Horn, Covent Garden
Lots of rubbish pubs around here, but this one was surprisingly good - Nice beer, quiz machine, decent music. The jukebox makes a big difference!
13 Sep 2004 11:13
The Sherlock Holmes, Charing Cross
Insane pub, obviously aimed at the Yankee tourists who lap it up.
13 Sep 2004 11:05
Location not exactly great, the pub looks OK, but doesn't work somehow - You can even sit outside and watch the annoying tourists/Chavs/Civil Servants(delete as appropriate) go by
13 Sep 2004 11:04
Ciaran - The whole point of Samuel Smiths pubs is that they don't sell all the branded crap that they do elsewhere...
Go to the millions of other pubs that sell Guinness - Or be a little more adventurous and try the Sam Smiths equivalent?
10 Sep 2004 11:58
Pub in Waterloo train station. Hence, has no atmosphere, and is chav-central outside, what with all the beggars.
Beer is also very expensive and watery than a very watery thing
10 Sep 2004 11:55
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Losing customers hand over fist - All the men who used to drink here have gone elsewhere, leaving an empty Tarts Boudoir, playing unfeasably loud "music" obviously catering for the "laydeez" eg. Wind Beneath My Wings, Katie "Wombles" Mellua etc. Absolute rubbish.
The service behind the bar has also declined drastically.
I almost feel sorry for them - This used to be a nice pub.
10 Sep 2004 11:40
Filthy McNasty's II, Twickenham
Oi David! I live in Feltham and am not scum! Although to be fair, I understand where you are coming from!
I think all the pikeys in the Hob Goblin are more than likely to be from Whitton and Hounslow, which was full of them last time I checked. Possibly brought here via the 281 bus.
10 Sep 2004 11:31
I remember, a long long time ago (or 5 years ago to be precise) the George was a lovely pub, full of oak panels and decent beer.
Now sadly, has been subject to a dodgy refit and the soul has been ripped out of it. The type of pub that sells aftershock. When you see drunks on the news in Twickenham, and they are going on about "yob culture" or binge drinking, chances are they will have been in here, the Hob Goblin or the Sorting Room.
Avoid - Go to one of the other very nice pubs in Twickenham on this site.
10 Sep 2004 11:27
Formerly known as Olivers, refit was probably overdue, as despite a seemingly prime location, never had any customers!
8 Sep 2004 13:25
A cool pub right in the middle of town, sit outside and watch the mentalists go by..
8 Sep 2004 13:17
If this is a pub, I am an armadillo.
Poncey joint, that wouldn't know a pint if it slapped them in the chops.
7 Sep 2004 15:58
Demolished?? I'd not been here in a while, but if this is true it is a definite improvement.
7 Sep 2004 15:35
WHY would you want to go here, when there are so so many good other pubs in Bath?
It's only good point is it keeps the meatheads out of the good pubs!
7 Sep 2004 15:32
The Full House, Hemel Hempstead
A massive pub, used to be a cinema.
Probably was better as a Cinema to be honest.
6 Sep 2004 14:02
Was the old pub really that good? Usually I completely agree with the dodgy pub refit, but this place seems to have been done with taste.
6 Sep 2004 13:48
Woah, avoid. A DREADFUL pub, full of the lower forms of society.
Trust me, you just don't need the hassle of drinking in here.
6 Sep 2004 13:45
This is not a good pub, sorry Cindy, staff praise does not count.
In a particularly grim area of Hounslow, inside is smokey hell, outside is crime hell.
Avoid like the Plague.
6 Sep 2004 13:44
Tried a refit of sorts but didn't work.
This is something of a "right-wing" pub so would best avoid if I was you.
6 Sep 2004 13:42
Catch it while you can - Once the third runway is built, this pub will be reduced to rubble.
Quite a decent pub actually, with a good menu.
6 Sep 2004 13:24
Hayley - You are right, for plane spotting it is ideal.
Personally, having your pint glass almost shatter due to the din every 2 minutes gets a bit galling after a while.
Also, this pub is always full of Feltham white vanners, on their way home.
And as the Pub Ghost says, the beer is rubbish.
6 Sep 2004 13:22
Quite a "local" pub, big for your watching sport type of thing.
Popular, only due to the total lack of competition.
6 Sep 2004 13:19
The Moon on the Square, Feltham
Best pub in Feltham eh?
I hate to say it, but he is probably right - But bare in mind that there are no decent pubs in Feltham it is not saying much.
Personally, the Red Lion is marginally better.
6 Sep 2004 13:18
Squares / Wall Street, Preston
Now called Wall Street rather than Squares.
Horrid pub/nightclub, full of tarty types, aftershock drinkers and glitter.
3 Sep 2004 15:31
I AM SHOUTING!
An incredibly big and popular Wetherspoons - Bit rough and ready with the locals, but cheap enough.
3 Sep 2004 15:14
The Jubilee, Sunbury on Thames
My initial comment perhaps was too offensive.
I second Mikes remarks - The barmaid could not pour a pint of Shandy - Not a complicated task you would think, but she poured a quart of lemonade and then topped up the point with warm beer for half an hour.
Hence a pint of warm beer,
Although perhaps that is what you deserve for ordering a pint of Shandy.
3 Sep 2004 15:04
Short on the variety of drinks.. Are you insane, this is a Sam Smiths pub..
If you mean the Fosters, Guinness and John Smiths were missing, then that is why. All the better the pub is for having some decent cheap ales as well.
3 Sep 2004 14:52
Very local pub, Mike you are too harsh though, I bet you only dislike it so much because they wouldn't serve you a snakebite till your voice broke.
There are better pubs around mind you.
31 Aug 2004 10:44
An OK pub, has a little comedy club upstairs sometimes, which is cool.
31 Aug 2004 10:35
Thanks Pub Ghost, as I suspected, another decent pub ruined by the refitters!
31 Aug 2004 10:23
Now renamed as "Crystalz" Wine bar. Still the same old sad bar though..
31 Aug 2004 10:20
Walking into this pub for the first time, I was pleasantly surprised - Looked good inside, decent music playing, no pikeys and a good range of beer.
However... I was then forced to pay 3.05 for a pint - THREE POUNDS FIVE PEE! We are in Twickenham admittedly, but there is a line between being an expensive pub and a ripoff - And this place is a rip off. It was only for a pint of bloody Heineken as well. I was considering a Hoegaarden or Leffe but a call to Ocean Finance would have been in order if I had been foolish enough to order one of those beers.
A real shame - A decent pub ruined by ripoff prices. Officially the most expensive pub in Twickenham.
31 Aug 2004 10:14
If anyone can find a more expensive pub in Richmond, please post it on here.
I wouldn't mind, but their main lager is Castlemaine XXXX - Not even a decent brew..
25 Aug 2004 14:12
I lost my wallet and it was handed in to the bar in here.. Hence I think they are very friendly, honest and marvellous.
Actually, an overcrowded, overpriced pub, but I rate them a little higher because of the above..
23 Aug 2004 11:19
A great pub with some mighty fine beers and a great concept with the old workers thing.
23 Aug 2004 11:18
The Weir Hotel, Walton on Thames
Bad ratings on here are very harsh - Miles out of the way, but a nice enough pub with some good beers.
23 Aug 2004 11:16
The Jack Horner, Tottenham Court Road
Good looking male bar staff! Wow, what a reason to go in a pub..
Not a bad pub, has some decent beers, although the atmosphere is a bit chain pubby.
23 Aug 2004 11:15
Mick Jaggers local apparently. Don't let that put you off - A nice little pub and no Ikea furniture whatsoever.
23 Aug 2004 11:02
Whoever said this was a smart and classy venue is clearly blind, stupid or the owner.
A horrid expensive joint, filled with irritating people
23 Aug 2004 11:00
Quite a pleasant, inoffensive pub. Worth a visit, although prohibitively pricey
23 Aug 2004 10:59
The Hole In The Wall, Richmond
Tiny little pub, and not that busy, but has a good vibe and is considerably less pretentious than other pubs nearby
22 Aug 2004 20:27
Rubbish, the place is clearly being run into the ground, has potential but is tatty beyond belief
22 Aug 2004 20:26
A soulless overpriced mess, I agree with whoever said it keeps the poncy morons out of the other pubs..
17 Aug 2004 14:26
Good rugby pub, always packed for big games, but good atmosphere.
Not cheap though - But this is Richmond
16 Aug 2004 12:54
Tiny tiny bar - Not bad though, although if raining could cause a problem.
16 Aug 2004 10:07
Waxy's Little Sister, Piccadilly Circus
Quite quirky, what with the dumb waiter taking drinks upstairs.
In practice a nightmare, as you finish up inadvertantly nicking someones drinks and vice versa
12 Aug 2004 14:26
Used to be better before they Ikea-d it up. Still not too bad, but very sterile and atmosphere is pants.
12 Aug 2004 14:24
EXCELLENT beers - If you want cocktails go elsewhere you cretin.
Has the micro-brewery. Not too difficult to get a seat either - Not overpacked.
12 Aug 2004 14:23
The Moon Under Water, Leicester Square
Always packed, probably due to the prices, most of the bars round here are pants so is probably no worse than any of them..
12 Aug 2004 14:21
Prices in here are a complete ripoff by anyones standards.
A complete disgrace, which distracts from any other merits completely.
12 Aug 2004 13:26
Old Orleans, Kingston Upon Thames
Very expensive and completely soulless - However, drinks and food are pretty good
12 Aug 2004 13:20
O'Neills, Kingston Upon Thames
OK for an O'Neills. Much better than the one in Richmond.
12 Aug 2004 13:19
The Exeter Inn, Chittlehamholt
Lovely thatched pub, right in the middle of nowhere in North Devon.
Hence, getting here might be a problem unless you are actually staying in the pub.
Good ciders and excellent food.
12 Aug 2004 13:06
I remember being asked if I was old enough to buy a pack of fags in here, when I was 24.
Bit of a pikey pub, and also very very expensive for no real reason
12 Aug 2004 09:58
Looks a half decent pub inside, but is located in wasteland going towards Meadowhell and the service is less than friendly..
11 Aug 2004 14:55
Why on earth this place is in here as a pub is beyond me. Mainly a snooker club & bowling alley, it does have a bar, but you wouldn't really want to have a night out there...
11 Aug 2004 14:51
This is not a half bad pub - Good ales, beer garden and music.
11 Aug 2004 14:46
Disappointing. Used to do Molson on draft - Don't do anymore, drinks selection now identikit. Which is pretty pointless when this is meant to be a Canadian bar.
10 Aug 2004 15:50
Apart from the bad sporting losers in here, well worth a visit.
10 Aug 2004 15:49
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
This pub has a really good vibe - A proper pub as it should be
10 Aug 2004 15:46
I think this place is the smallest pub in Britain or something.
This is great in theory, but in practice meand there is never anywhere to sit and it takes a lot of squeezing about to get served.
10 Aug 2004 15:32
The Thames Bar (Ship Hotel), Shepperton
Order a drink and the random number generator comes into play...Get lucky and you get a real bargain, not and your round of 4 pints and a wine may come to 28.42
10 Aug 2004 15:26
This is an OK pub, but has some "interesting" clientele and the service is pants.
10 Aug 2004 15:25
An overpriced pub, with no real atmosphere. Like going for a drink in a beefeater.
10 Aug 2004 15:24
Marvellous pub that stays open till 2am - hence bit expensive, but has a great upstairs bit and good jukebox.
10 Aug 2004 15:16
Good little pub with a good atmosphere, definitely worth an afternoon sesh
10 Aug 2004 15:15
Is a reasonable Irish bar, but you won't find any pub in Ireland anything like it.
10 Aug 2004 15:10
This place used to be a nice little bar called the Westgate - They obliterated it with the chain pub. Food and service in here is pretty atrocious so I would avoid - Go over the road to the Grapes.
10 Aug 2004 15:08
One of the best pubs in town. Great beers, an innovative menu (kangaroo and bison burgers anyone), great for watching Rugby, drinking, anything really.
10 Aug 2004 15:07
This is a tiny, overpriced, overrated place. Avoid, there are so many better pubs in Bath to go to.
10 Aug 2004 15:04
Another good Bath pub, staff have been known to be a bit rude in the past, but generally speaking, the pub is well worth a visit.
10 Aug 2004 15:04
The Bell And Compass, Charing Cross
Atmosphere-less woodened floor type of a place.
OK for an after work drink but little else.
10 Aug 2004 14:52
One of the best pubs in the area. Fantastic beer at great prices, good atmosphere, nice location.
I can't find anything wrong with it! Perhaps it needs a jukebox?
10 Aug 2004 14:45
A great pub, Sam Smiths beers, location off Trafalgar square and aircon for those HOT days..
10 Aug 2004 14:36
In no way possible could you describe this pub as "not bad".
If the clientele have a working liver between them I would be amazed.
10 Aug 2004 14:19
A reasonable pub compared to the dross surrounding it, but the service is very poor, making you feel guilty for even ordering a drink.
Plus it is full of all the usual Hounslow nutters.
10 Aug 2004 14:18
The Pitcher and Piano, Richmond
Hell on earth. Cram into a over-crowded pokey bar, playing bad dance music at decibels making conversation impossible, attempt to get drunk but fail miserably once you run out of cash after your first round.
10 Aug 2004 14:13
A nice little pub, good in summer to actually watch the Cricket and quite comfy in winter too.
10 Aug 2004 14:03
Reasonable, but nothing to shout out about - A typical overpriced Richmond pub, with not enough room to sit down in.
10 Aug 2004 14:03
Lovely. Good beers and food, nice decor, an example of a pub refit that actually works.
10 Aug 2004 14:00
Anyone who goes into Edwards surely knows the soulless hellhole of a joint that they are entering. Basically a knocking shop, playing extremely bad music with overpriced drinks and shallow patrons.
10 Aug 2004 13:57
If you get there early and get a table, then not so bad, especially when not a Friday or Saturday, can have a nice vibe and a good pint.
However, Fri and Sat far too packed, hot and you'll never get served either.
10 Aug 2004 13:52
This is a proper pub - Old men, fire, don't take cards behind the bar, blokes discussing their time in the colonies.
Once, all pubs were like this. If only, more were still.
10 Aug 2004 13:26
This has all the potential to be one of the best pubs in Richmond, but the frankly preposterous prices put paid to that.
I know it is in Richmond, but this just a ripoff.
10 Aug 2004 13:21
Not as poncey as most of the pubs nearby, hence is worth a visit.
10 Aug 2004 13:19
The Slug and Lettuce, Richmond
Absolutely shocking. A prime location like this would be ideal for a great pub.
Why anyone would want to go here, pay 4 for a small drink and put up with all the posing tossers in here is beyond me.
Rubbish over-priced(even for Richmond) drinks and the clientele inspire fits of violence in me.
Slug and Lettuces are not all this way - There is a good one in St Martins lane - But this one really is the Pits.
10 Aug 2004 13:18
I quite like this pub - It has a certain traditional vibe that a pub should have.
I would avoid on Rugby days though.
10 Aug 2004 13:09
The Teddington Arms, Teddington
This place is unusual in that it was built on a site recently that wasn't a pub at all - A new pub being built is rare indeed.
The decor inside is not bad - They have fallen into the wooden strip flooring trap, but not to the extent of a lot of places, there are nice comfy sofas to sit on etc. It is very expensive though, menu is poncey in the extreme and the place does seem to fill up with Poseurs - Therefore whilst not a bad attempt, could definitely do better.
10 Aug 2004 13:05
Ah well, who am I too argue? If they want to say they are in Bedfont then good luck to them!!
10 Aug 2004 12:52
Another pub falls prey to the Ikea brigade.
As it goes, this place is OK, despite the dodgy refit.
10 Aug 2004 12:50
The Fountain has always been a bit of a dive, but had a half decent restaurant to redeem it.
Recently though, it has had a refit, and delusions of grandeur - If you happen to stroll into the bar wearing trainers for instance, an overzealous bouncer will probably be on your case. Which is crazy for a crappy pub in the rough bit of Twickenham.
10 Aug 2004 11:51
A real locals pub, The Three Horseshoes is basically the Tardis in reverse - Looks massive on the outside, but a poky mess inside.
You will get some funny looks from the gold hooped earring brigade if you go in here, and there really are better places to drink not to far away - Get the bus to Sunbury instead.
10 Aug 2004 11:45
Please note that this pub is nowhere near Bedfont!! It is in Feltham.
10 Aug 2004 11:42
Typical Yates chain, as far as it goes around here, is acceptable for an after work drink but little else.
Full of the local people, walking around with their flashy mobile phones, acting as if they were in Wall Street, rather than a crappy Wine Lodge in Hounslow.
10 Aug 2004 11:40
The Moon Under Water, Hounslow
Same old Wetherspoons vibes, but this one is not as bad as soms.
The usual collection of wino's and Hounslow mentalists, but as all Hounslow pubs are full of such people, the contrast in here doesn't strike you straight away, and makes it a viable drinking option if you have the misfortune to have a night out in Hounslow.
10 Aug 2004 11:32
What a dive! I always think this Pub has closed for business judging by it's ramshackle state, until I look more closely and spot the customers inside with their knuckles scraping the floor.
A big pub, with potential to be good, but as it stands at the moment, a dirthole of the first variety.
9 Aug 2004 16:27
This is a nice pub. Very local and cosy, but staff are friendly, beer is good and there is a nice thai restaurant on the side.
Would definitely recommend.
9 Aug 2004 16:25
This is a nice pub! Not sure when the previous person went in there, but on a Sunday afternoon I thought it was great. Papers, nice beer, good food, nice atmosphere.
I think perhaps if you live near this pub, then it may seem pikey. However, I suggest trying a pub in Feltham to get a truer perspective.
9 Aug 2004 16:24
This is a Gay Pub - Interesting cabaret if you like that sort of thing.. Not being Gay I don't really feel qualified to rate it however.
9 Aug 2004 16:23
The London Apprentice, Old Isleworth
Quite a nice pub, although it is twice the price of the Town Wharf next door, so why you would to spend an evening in the Apprentice instead is beyond me.
9 Aug 2004 16:21
The Swan has an interesting interior, but has a decent jukebox and pool table, as long as you go in there when it is quiet. Also, the phrase "I bought it from a man in the pub" comes into play as there are some wares offered for sale that possibly were relieved of their previous owners without their knowledge..
9 Aug 2004 16:20
Magnificent pub, it's only fault which is a major one is it's a real ass to get to.
Sam Smiths pubs are always the bees knees for best beers and prices so you can't go wrong really, as long as you can get home easily.
9 Aug 2004 16:18
The Patch has a reputation as a place to go on Rugby days, although personally I would avoid like the plague on such days.
Otherwise, is a decent pub, it's only fault being the ridiculous prices which prevent it being a regular drinking venue.
For a Saturday afternoon pint though it takes some beating.
9 Aug 2004 16:16
This is a charming, if outrageously expensive, pub. Definitely in a lovely location though, and in the summer especially.
9 Aug 2004 16:14
The Twickenham Tup, Twickenham
OK to watch the Rugby I guess, if you like drinking in a heaving wooden floored mess of a pub, full of antipodeans.
I would go elsewhere if I was you.
9 Aug 2004 16:13
Quite a good summer pub, although personally the raucous crowd and the tiny bar make it an acquired taste.
9 Aug 2004 16:12
A nice pub, with good food and a nice selection of beer. Well ahead of most of the pubs in Twickenham.
9 Aug 2004 16:09
A vastly expensive, white elephant of a place. For a lunchtime quiet, read the papers type of place is reasonable, but is like a graveyard in the week.
Go to the Eel Pie instead.
9 Aug 2004 16:08
This place used to be an Alehouse, many years ago, and was a great pub, serving a great selection of Ales and Ciders.
However, it went first through a pointless refit, and then a complete namechange which obliterated any remnants of the old pub. Hence I would avoid. Only good in comparison to the dive that is next door being the Hook Line.
9 Aug 2004 16:06
Yet another identikit Wetherspoons pub. Also located near the job centre - Is this a deliberate ploy???!
9 Aug 2004 16:02
If you interested in pulling a desperate 40plus woman, who has delusions that she still "has it" then this is your ideal venue.
Otherwise forget it - I actually thought all places like this ceased to exist at the end of the 80's.
9 Aug 2004 16:01
I much preferred this place when it was the Post Office, it had more atmosphere and better facilities.
9 Aug 2004 15:59
The Hook, Line and Sinker, Twickenham
A new dreadful Ikea'd up pub. Has a reputation of being one of the best pubs in Twickenham when it is a soulless hell of a place. Full of fluffy rugby girls who strop around like they are the bees knees. Full of "trendy" people who wouldn't know a real pub if it punched them in the face.
Anyone who likes pubs, avoid this abomination of a drinking estblishment.
9 Aug 2004 15:58
I am guessing that this was a good pub before the Ikea refit took place - However, whatever character the place had was ruined when that happened, and the prices will empty your wallet just to add insult to injury.
9 Aug 2004 15:48
The Prince Blucher, Twickenham
A very nice pub, nice garden, good for watching sports. I can second Mikes comments about the refit, he is obviously a man who spends a lot of time in Pubs.
9 Aug 2004 15:42
The Winning Post is a weird pub, with a hotel and restaurant bolted on to the side. Plus it is on the A316, so you risk Carbon Monoxide poisoning if you sit outside.
Having said that, it is not so bad inside, and the restaurant is reasonable. The staff are clueless though and is full of Whitton "Hard" men.
9 Aug 2004 15:40
The Duke of Cambridge, Twickenham
I am not surprised only 2 people have rated this pub, as you would be hard pressed to get more than 2 people inside this pub it is so pokey.
If you are not known in the area, there is not a reason to enter this place.
9 Aug 2004 15:31
Best pub in Whitton by far. Is small and sometimes very smoky inside. However, has a massive beer garden. OK selection of beers, very friendly barstaff, jukebox is second to none.
9 Aug 2004 15:30
Used to be a really good pub, probably the best in the area. However, a combination of bad landlords and rougher clientele has dragged it right down.
Is still a reasonable place to watch the Rugby, but too often these days is full of the detritus of the area, is rough, smoky, the food is hell on earth and the beer is dubious. Go to the White Hart instead.
9 Aug 2004 15:25
The Moon on the Square, Feltham
As a Wetherspoons goes, is OK I suppose. Good and cheap ales.
Unfortunately, locating a dirt cheap pub in the middle of Feltham, especially so close to the D.S.S, results in a permananent residence of the hopeless alcoholics.
Which is common to many a wetherspoons I guess. If you are waiting for a train at the station, then it is your only option now the Railway Tavern was demolished.
9 Aug 2004 15:18
The Hare and Hounds, Sunbury on Thames
From the outside, looks like quite a nice pub, especially baring in mind it is in Sunbury.
However, the one time I went in, I was greeted with a Karaoke evening, seemingly populated by the worst elements of Feltham/Sunbury white trash. Also noticed all the dodgy shirtless geezers drinking outside when it gets hot. All in all, a very rough and rubbish pub, unless you have a white van, and go down the Bridge every weekend.
9 Aug 2004 15:01
The Flower Pot Hotel, Sunbury on Thames
Until very recently, a decent, if sometimes rough, pub to drink in. Does a pint of Cloudy Cider that you rarely get outside the west country. Had a decent restaurant as well.
BUT... Has recently been subject to a refit seemingly undertaken by a combination of Lawrence Lleywelyn Bowen and Stevie Wonder. This has ruined the atmosphere, and also attracted some of the Magpies "trendy" clientele, obviously attracted like flies to the wooden strip flooring.
So sadly, not worth a visit these days.
9 Aug 2004 14:57
The White Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Pub has been on the site since 1729 and possibly some of the clientele as well.
I like this pub although many wouldn't - If you like a traditional tatty old mans pub, full of people with red faces and that serves brown ale this is your one. Also has a pool room and a jukebox with some very old songs on. A breath of fresh air compared to the manufactured fare you get elsewhere (although fresh air is a premium actually in the pub itself...)
9 Aug 2004 14:55
The Phoenix, Sunbury on Thames
Far better than the nearby Magpie, has similar facilities with a garden backing on to the river. Better beer, jukebox, food is OK, outside facilities are far better and staff friendly.
Plus not full of ponces like the Magpie. Would fully recommend.
9 Aug 2004 14:52
The Three Fishes, Sunbury on Thames
3 Fishes is a very cramped pub and also very local - However, as a stop off on a pub crawl, or a few quiet midweek drinks is fine. Good quiz machine.
9 Aug 2004 14:51
Not the best pub in Sunbury by far. This place has a nice location by the river but that is about it. Overpriced drink, food is also not good value for money, too hot and packed in summer and regularly full of people who fancy themselves too much.
Possibly the WORST pub in Sunbury.

The Admiral Hawke, Sunbury on Thames
A good pub, especially for food it is first class. Is quite small and "local" but go in any other pub in the area and the local element is 100 times worse and more threatening. In the Hawke they are at least friendly.

The Grey Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Quite a nice pub, bit inconvenient to get to, but does a nice pint. Next to a cop shop though so is a PolicePub.

The Running Horse, Sunbury on Thames
Not a bad pub, on the Feltham/Sunbury border, so you get a fair amount of the Feltham meatheads in. However, as an after work stop for a pint, it is perfectly adequate.

The Pride is very good - However, to use this pub involves having a lung transplant after leaving, possibly the smokiest pub ever.
