Old Crown Inn, Handsworth

seems to be trading again.

4 Mar 2010 17:54

The Drakehouse Mill, Sheffield

A modern family diner pub by Crystal Peaks shopping centre and retail park, near sheffield. Part of the spirit group "two for one" chain.
***
large interior with lots of seating. It can get very busy at peak meal times.
Meals are reasonably priced anyway, but there are often some even better promtions on.
***
counter service is usually ok, even at busy times.
meals are fair for the price.
***
verdict:
handy local family diner with fair pricing and reasonable service. no cask ales, but this is really a diner anyway.
a 6 from me.

2 Mar 2010 13:36

The Gateford, Worksop

passed this the other day.
now closed down and boarded up.
not rated.

11 Jan 2010 17:35

The Innkeeper's Lodge Derby, Derby

another very satisfactory stay here on a city break.
the place seems to have a relaxed, welcoming feel to it.
only let down this time by the carvery being temporarily out of action during twixmas!
***
rooms, breakfast, beer, service are all very commendable.
2 cask ales on. pedigree and banks bitter.
frequent bus service into town if required.
***
verdict:
a 9 again from me.

6 Jan 2010 12:30

Harvester, Derby

modern looking pub/grill just out of town on the "pride parkway".
inside, light in decor. felt nice & welcoming.
staff were very friendly & helpful.
***
as said, whilst there is a separate bar, this is not really a "pub" and is more for diners. that said, it met our needs perfectly, and the "early bird" menu, before 6:30pm, was good value.
plus free top-ups on soft drinks.
I had the chicken & rib combo at about 6 which, with the self-service salad buffet, was more than adequate.
***
verdict:
very satisfied with the food & service.
[remember this is a diner].
a 7 from me, basically on food quality, value & service.

6 Jan 2010 12:24

Ye Olde Dolphin Inn, Derby

oozes character.
lots of small rooms, some with open fires.
beer good, but a little pricey.
think the food is served in a separate room.
verdict:
an 8 again from me.

6 Jan 2010 12:10

The Standing Order, Derby

another satisfactory visit to here for lunch during a city break.
good ales, food, & service.
beautiful building!
verdict:
a 9 again from me.

6 Jan 2010 12:06

The Blue Bell Inn, Bolsover

nice town pub in old english country-pub style.
i.e. limestone built, slate roof.
adjacent pub carpark, with stupendous views from this high vantage point!
***
I believe there is a public bar, family room, and larger lounge.
the family room is newer and more modern. we settled in the lounge, pleasantly done in stone with timber beam.
***
there were 6 excellent cask ales on, mainly from the Jennings and Wychwood breweries. [some of my favourites!].
around 2.80 a pint though, which is not uncommon, but is a bit of a shock for a jdw customer!
food is available. some of the meals looked huge.
unfortunately didn't check the menu for prices.
***
verdict:
a quiet, very pleasant pub with good ale & good meals.
scores on most things I look for, so a 9 from me.

28 Dec 2009 18:13

The Rawson Spring, Hillsborough

have visited a few times since.
there still seems to be just as many beers on, but the beers now seem to be ok on the whole.
back up to a 7 from me.

17 Dec 2009 14:08

The Square Sail, Lincoln

an attempt at a trendy, modern bar in the new retail area around the wharf.
quite small for a jdw house.
2 levels. downstairs bar. upstairs dining.
excellent view across the wharf from the upstairs window seats.
the usual jdw menu, but only 2 cask ales on, abbot & ruddles.
the abbot was in good condition.
***
we called during the lincoln christmas markets for a lunchtime meal.
the place was completely filled, but we did get served at the bar fairly quickly.
had to wait well over an hour for our meals though.
the staff seemed to be doing what they could, but the place seemed thinly staffed for such a busy period.
loads of empty glasses all over the place.
we eventually felt as though we'd spent a lot of the day here instead of up in the markets!
***
verdict:
no extra staffing during the lincoln christmas markets seemed a poor management move.
also the cask ale range was down to only 2. quite poor for a jdw.
seemed more of a youngsters weeked boozer.
disappointing. wished I had gone to the ritz pub instead in the end.
just a 4 from me.

14 Dec 2009 09:15

Wetherspoons, Birmingham

built into a small, modern shopping mall near the city centre.
fairly small for the typical jdw. 8-10 pumps on. usual menu.
**
I did notice one or two of the younger evening bar staff are well practiced at ignoring you, unless you are an attractive young girl. unfortunately a life-size cardboard cut-out of pamela anderson was not available to stand behind.
***
This may of course be down to the "strange queueing system" mentioned earlier. however as said, it doesn't seem to apply to dolly birds!
***
verdict:
nothing special.
a 5 from me on ale/food choice & pricing. but thats the jdw deal anyway.

8 Dec 2009 12:29

The Square Peg, Birmingham

this is a modern city centre bar, occupying a long, ground level section of office block.
it has an extremely long bar, looking all the more impressive as the room is also long & narrow. They have a jaw-dropping 20 cask pumps!!
dining-only area at one end. better for families, etc.
some reviewers noted a lot of pumps were often 'coming soon'. however I think most were on at our visit. that could be down to the recently ended beer festival.
I would imagine most pubs would find it extremely difficult to shift 20 cask ales on a constant basis, so I would expect some to be off unless theres a festival on.
***
verdict:
we were quite pleased with the choice & service of both meals & drinks.
however cheap-beer-day monday did seem to attract a few questionable characters. there wasnt any trouble though.
based on our two visits, happy to give an 8.

8 Dec 2009 12:23

The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham

a listed building, just out of city centre, by the cathedral.
the tall, stone front leads into a very impressive, high-ceilinged room, with a second floor above. an ornate well decorated ceiling, with domed sky-light.
the central rectangular bar has four sets of six pumps, all serving the same 6 ales.
these are all fullers, such as london pride, esb, gales hsb & some seasonal.
all quality ales, but at around 3/pint, not that good value, as was the menu.
regarding the 'atmosphere', I would say large premises need large numbers of people to provide it. otherwise they feel empty.
***
verdict:
very impressive interior, good ales & menu [albeit a bit pricey].
an 8 from me.

8 Dec 2009 12:21

The Shakespeare Inn, Birmingham

small-fronted M&B pub just off the pedestrianised New Street.
we called here both in the day and in the evening. each session had a different feel.
the evening felt like a typical town boozer, whilst the lunchtime session had a much livelier, friendlier, relaxed feel.
There were a few in for a drink by the bar, most were dining in the back room.
The inside has a lived-in, traditional look, with old timber bar and coloured ceramic tiling on the staircase & some walls.
The menu was quite varied, with meals around 4-5, plus grills & burgers, etc.
we had the check/bacon barbeque sauce & cheese at 4, with was very tasty.
2 cask ales were on. draught bass and shepherd neame spitfire.
The staff were quite friendly and helpful.
***
verdict:
we liked it here and we'd go back again to eat if we visited.
unfortunately the cask ales [I tried both] were a little off colour.
however I should have guessed, as I have found this to be the case in a number of M&B pubs I've visited, even though the meals and other drinks tend to be fine.
so a 7 from me. more if the beers had been good.

8 Dec 2009 12:20

The Lock Keeper, Worksop

this pub/diner has been closed for a few months.
now re-decorated and recently re-opened. still under the Marstons banner.
the 2-for-1 menu has been scrapped, in place of a carvery and more pricey menu.
so basically its dearer, but the meals are bigger and better.
they also now have 3 cask ales on instead of the one.
marstons pedigree, burton bitter and brackspear bitter.
***
verdict:
the place feels very smart after the re-furb.
should do well both over christmas, and also in summer, as it has outdoor seating by the canal-side, an enclosed childrens play area, and a large car park.
the carvery [6] was very enjoyable. plenty of meat [3 joints] and self-service veg.
unfortunately the cask ales weren't to my own particular liking.
a 7 from me.

8 Dec 2009 12:18

Sir Jack, Bramley

this pub has now re-opened as a more up-market carvery.
6 in the day, 7.50 evenings.
***
verdict:
nice food, but more expensive.
the problem here is that as more pub/diners move toward carvery, the menu choices become less & less.
a 7 from me.

8 Dec 2009 12:15

Cuthbert Bank, Hillsborough

closed dowm & up for sale again.

12 Nov 2009 12:47

The Museum, Sheffield

as said. traditionally styled town pub.
upper floor with bar, lower floor leading into orchard square shopping arcade.
chalk board of meals & guest ales.
3-4 cask ales on. GK & others.
meals during day.
***
verdict:
a nice traditional real-ale bar, but slightly expensive. as is the usual for GK?.
verdict : 7

29 Oct 2009 17:35

The Red Lion Inn, Todwick

laterooms.com comment:
Originally a farmhouse, the pub dates back to 1838 and has retained much of its old character having oak beams, flagstone flooring and real fires lit in winter. Situated just 8 miles from Sheffield City centre and only one mile from Junction 31 off the M1 The cosy bar, restaurant and terrace offer seasonal menus, with a wide selection of modern and traditional British favourites, from hearty main courses and lighter snacks, complimented by a selection of real ales, carefully selected wines, speciality teas and coffees. The hotel offers 29 comfortable en-suite bedrooms.

8 Oct 2009 19:57

The Red Lion Inn, Todwick

speckled hen was on beside the abbot ale on a recent visit.

28 Sep 2009 13:40

The Half Moon, Whitwell Common

closing down for refurb to become a carvery.
no more 2 for 1.
***
not before time in my opinion.
food was often poorly cooked & over-microwaved.

28 Sep 2009 12:55

Sir Jack, Bramley

closing down for refurb to become a carvery.
no more 2 for 1.
due to re-open october I believe.

28 Sep 2009 12:53

The William Rufus, Carlisle

close by the railway station on the main street.
a large, open plan, single seating area, for about 200.
modern design. a bit dark inside.
mixed table & soft seating.
***
standard jdw menu.
6 cask ales on.
***
verdict:
fairly standard jdw.
I like wetherspoons but I much prefer the older, restored buildings they use.
a 7 from me.

28 Sep 2009 12:36

The Cumberland Inn, Carlisle

Had a day trip to Carlisle from Penrith, and I was really looking forward to visiting this pub, as Its rated highly in my 2006 good beer guide.
***
however it seems to have got worse since then.
I can see the original building has potential, but it has a run-down feel to it now. no meals. no cask ales.
lady behind the bar says they don't sell these days.
***
verdict:
I'm sure the place has seen much better days, but there are much nicer pubs on the same street.
sorry to say, only a 3 from me.

28 Sep 2009 12:32

The Silkstone Inn, Barnsley

called last saturday lunch.
this is the newer of the two jdws in barnsley.
modern design, with front outdoor seating.
one or two heavy drinkers outside, but weren't a problem.
***
inside a single large interior with some partitioning.
seating for around 200-250.
the place was quite busy around lunchtime, and we struggled to get a table.
this cleared a little, later on.
***
standard menu, wihich we ordered from.
service was quick and polite, to say how busy it was.
meals were okay.
there were about 8 cask ales on.
I had the abbot, which was a little cloudy bu tasted okay.
***
verdict:
standard wetherspoon.
the place was a little dark, but was kept clean, even when busy.
meals & drinks okay.
an extra point for good service.
an 8 from me.

20 Jul 2009 13:10

The Little Mester, North Anston

2-for-1 menu.
nice steaks. 2 for 10.
go early to eat, as can get busy later on.

15 Jul 2009 12:57

Cuthbert Bank, Hillsborough

opened recently with a new landlord/couple.
seems a bit bare and empty at the minute.
***
central bar with lounge, pool table, pub/disco setup, etc.
no meals or cask ales.
***
its a bit too far out to be in the hillsborough "pub circuit" so will probably have to make do with the locals. I think its going to difficult for them.
***
verdict:
not much to offer at the moment.
just a 1 from me for now.

13 Jul 2009 13:17

Cuthbert Bank, Hillsborough

13 Jul 2009 13:16

Junction Hotel, Woodhouse

called again last saturday evening.
no food and only one cask ale [deuchars].
the place was full, but this time with chav-like characters.
some quite drunk. there was also a noticeable increase in "rather young looking" 18 year olds.
then the kareoke arrived, things got a lot louder and the drunks decided they wanted to be pop stars.
***
verdict:
this has just about put me off completely now.
probably won't be calling again.
down to a 3 now from me.

12 Jul 2009 21:50

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

called last friday evening.
food was as good as ever. carvery at 3.50.
bar now has Greene King IPA on cask at 1.69/pint !
not sure if this is to be the price long-term.

29 Jun 2009 13:10

The Loyal Trooper, South Anston

the specials menu is now 2-for-9, days & evenings, mon-thur.
half a dozen options, including fillet of salmon !

25 Jun 2009 12:38

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

crown carveries and toby inns are to have cask ales on offer.

25 Jun 2009 12:34

Leeds Arms, South Anston

the leeds has recently advertised Abbot at 1.60 and speckled hen at 2.
haven't been in for a while, so gave it a try.
they were out of abbot, so had the hen, which was okay.
however I got the feeling they were just getting rid of the last of it.
the pub looks a bit bare now, and was empty apart from a small group of visiting bikers.
no food on now.
it looks desparately in need of some business.
this used to be a busy youngsters pub, so where they're going nowadays I don't know.
the trooper up the road is still doing okay, but is more geared toward the older residents. [e.g. no music, etc].
***
a 1 from me, for the beer alone.

25 Jun 2009 12:30

Lordens Hotel, Dinnington

the Lordens is now completely shut down & boarded up.

24 Jun 2009 12:57

The Benjamin Huntsman, Sheffield

called again last saturday for lunch.
tried the new chicken, ham & leek pie at 4.99.
the short-crust pastry was soft and nicely warmed [as opposed to the rock-hard over-microwaved stuff you can sometimes get].
the abbot was also spot on.
***
verdict:
I like this one a bit more than the other sheffield jdws. it seems to be smarter, and the cask ales always seem to be in top condition. [10 on my visit].
the staff are usually quick and helpful when they are not too rushed.
an 8 from me.

24 Jun 2009 12:56

Corn Law Rhymer, Rotherham

full name : "Corn Law Ryhmer".
a recent lloyds No1 bar, part of the wetherspoon chain.
ex-litten tree premises.
named after Ebenezer Elliott, the successful iron dealer born in Rotherham, in 1871 famed as the Corn Law Ryhmer.
***
not visited yet, so unrated.

17 Jun 2009 12:57

The Cutler, North Anston

had a couple of police raids recently.
now advertising the lease for sale.

17 Jun 2009 12:45

The Squirrel Inn, Dinnington

confirmed yesterday.
still trading but up for sale.

17 Jun 2009 12:43

Brunswick Hotel, Sheffield

small residential estate pub. looks a bit run down on the outside.
inside has a small central bar serving a tap room and lounge.
the tap sounded a bit rowdy, so we went in the lounge which was quieter, and turned out to be clean and looked after.
historical pictures of woodhouse around the walls.
***
there was no food or cask ales.
has the feel of a "locals only" dwelling.
***
verdict:
poor state, no food or cask ales.
prefer the Junction just down the road.
just a 2 from me.

17 Jun 2009 12:33

The Bay Horse, Scholes

a lovely country pub on the main road through the tiny village of Scholes.
the pub faces directly out on to the road, and has its own carpark to the rear.
***
inside, there is a comfortable modern bar area at the front, with tv, pool table, and open log fire for winter. around to the side and rear of the central bar is a larger area mainly for diners. the place is clean and comfortable, and claims to have an enviable menu. Surprisingly, there were 6 cask ales available from various breweries.
***
verdict:
whilst the pub was nice. it was [perhaps understandably] more focussed toward the local regulars present than visitors. I also caught a couple of worried looks from the landlord at my attire [sweat top & walking boots]. however all were clean as a whistle so his concern was unwarranted. so it appears despite the existence numerous local footpaths and adjacent ancient coppice woodland, I sensed a slight holstility toward walkers.
best to judge for yourself.
a 7 from me.

16 Jun 2009 17:17

Station Hotel, Kiveton Park

a traditonal brick-built pub, sat by the kiveton park railway level crossing.
the place had been getting a bit run down, and closed recently for re-furb.
it is now open as a "freehouse" and is run by the landlord from the Midland pub at Killamarsh.
***
the pub has a fair sized car park to the rear, with outdoor smoking area.
inside, the central bar serves a public bar and lounge.
the bar has darts, pool table & plasma tv.
the larger lounge is split into 2 areas, and used mostly for dining. seating for about 60-70.
whilst there is a low population locally, the place seems quite popular with visitors, and there were many diners on the saturday evening we called.
***
the menu is on nightly, with an "italian" night on saturdays.
tuesday quiz, sunday kareoke, friday disco.
there were 4 cask ales on at our visit, but I found them slightly pricey at 2.70/2.75 a pint.
***
verdict:
scores ok for the meals and cask ale choice, but the beer is pricey.
a 7 from me.

16 Jun 2009 17:11

The Palladium, Llandudno

visited again on a recent holiday.
a very impressive 15 cask ales on !
every day is a beer festival here !
the ones we tried were all in good condition.
***
only thing I don't like here is its a bit dull & dark on the lower floor, even in bright sunlight. Also, as is the case in many jdws, the tables were cleared but table tops and menus were sticky with drink spill.
bring back beer mats !!
***
verdict:
even after my gripes, I still give an 8 for exceptional choice & value.
rock on JD.

16 Jun 2009 14:05

Stag Inn, Woodhouse

presentable, small town pub. Used to be an M&B "sizzlers" pub.
***
outside, a decent sized beer garden and patio face out on to the paved square. This is quite popular in teh summer.
***
inside is clean and looked-after. A central bar serves a sizeable public bar on one side, and three lounge areas on the other. The rear one used as a dining area until around 7pm.
***
there is a main menu, priced at around 5 a head, then a 2-for-7 menu available mon-fri before 7pm.
We tried these and they were quite decent meals for the price.
thursdays offer is 2 ribeye steaks and bottle of wine for 15.
cask ales are advertised outside, and there is a courage directors pump. However I'm told this has not been used for quite some time.
***
verdict:
a fair pub, plain but looked after. Meals are decent and well priced.
for me, let down by the lack of cask ales.
also the staff seemed quite miserable and unfriendly, considering we required 4 meals and drinks, and the place was not busy.
a 6 from me.

16 Jun 2009 13:58

The Cappercaillie, Fort William

I couldn't spot this anywhere on the high street on a recent visit.
I suspect it may be under a different name now.

12 May 2009 14:01

Aulay's Bar, Oban

called here one lunch time on an Oban day trip, a quiet mid-week afternoon.
the pub has a somewhat celtic/irish feel to it. The location and interior have been well described already.
***
a central bar serves a lounge & tap room, as in the photos.
no cask ales. the belhaven best is always decent alternative.
food is on at certain times. around 7-8 for mains.
***
verdict:
attractive pub but sadly no cask ales.
[no excuse - belhaven do a nice 80/- as cask].
so a 6 from me.

12 May 2009 13:51

Moorlands, Owler Bar

a "newish" pub diner, on the big roundabout at owler bar, on the edge of the peak district park. theres a large car park, small kids fenced kids play area, and about a dozen outdoor tables.
***
inside is modern, smart, comfortable, and quite spacious. the tables are not too crowded, as I've found in some crown carveries. seating is for about 200 at a guess.
the standard carvery is available through the day and evening.
3.50. 6.50 on sundays.
small range of additional meals, with staters and desserts.
although I have to say I've usually had enough after the self-service carvery!
once again, no cask ales on. [shame].
***
verdict:
as to be expected from the crown carvery chain:
good food at excellent prices.
we found this was a nice stop after a days walking in the Peaks.
however I think it could get quite busy at peak dining times.
a 7 from me. [mainly as a diner].

12 May 2009 13:26

Junction Hotel, Woodhouse

revisited last saturday.
found the pub had changed management. in January.
apparently the lease is owned by a pub management group.
***
its still a smart pub, and now has a pool table and juke box. An attempt to cater more for the younger crowd.
No meals yet.
2 cask ales on. Tetley bitter as regular, and one guest.
courage directors was on for our visit. 2.60/pint.
Bombardier had just come off.
***
the place seems to be less busy on each visit.
a shame.
nice pub, nice beer.
down to a 6 from me, as the meals are now off.

12 May 2009 08:16

The Innkeeper's Lodge Derby, Derby

I too can say that I know of a number of M&B pubs where the cask ales are poor or have gone off.
however with regard to this particular toby, I can only say that the speckled hen I had on both nights we stayed in Jan [reviewd april'09] was a tip-top pint.
Its a beer I know and one of my favourites, and this pub did it due justice.

7 May 2009 13:27

Grog and Gruel, Fort William

smallish high street pub, with bare board floors and barrel tables.restaurant upstairs.
we called on a monday night, which was quiet.
4 of the 10 cask ale pumps were on.
the barman was quite helpful in choosing a beer, and happily allowed us to sample some. two I remember were caledonian 80/- and "Kelpie Seaweed Ale" from the lanarkshire Heather Ale Ltd.
we tried the seaweed ale for novelty value which turned out to be quite nice, like a flavoursome stout.
there was also a decent whisky selection.
***
verdict:
bar was a bit basic, beer and price was good, not sure about the food as we didn't try it. okay for a change from the drovers.
a 6 from me.

30 Apr 2009 18:04

The Drovers, Fort William

the drovers pub lies on the main high street through town. The smart but small looking frontage belies a deceptively large interior, which must stretch back a good 50 yards or so! It is split level with a small quieter area at the front containing soft seating, tv, open fire place, and steps up to the main bar.
There are more tvs and soft seating on the larger upper floor, which also contains the bar and small kitchen. There is a pool table, and the seating to the rear reaches back almost to lochside, providing good views along loch linnhe.
***
the kitchen provides a reasonable menu, with daily specials. most main meals priced around 6-7. but these are also 2-for 1! among others, belhaven best keg bitter was available, plus belhaven 80/- on cask. there is also a reasonble whisky selection.
***
verdict:
after our first call here on our weeks holiday, we were convinced this would be our regular for the week. the pub and prices were right, and the staff were very friendly.
an 8 from me.

30 Apr 2009 14:15

The George and Dragon, Wentworth

a lovely old english country village pub on the main road through wentworth.
it is set back from the main road, with its own small car park. a few stone steps lead up to a small slabbed patio providing a handful tables with outdoor seating. I didn't see the beer garden but its said to be nice.
***
inside theres a small seating area near the bar as you enter, along with two other rooms either side, mainly for dining. The place has a nice original old fashioned feel to it, and smells appetizingly of food. I found there was also some stairs leading to an extra dining room upstairs.
**
the george is a "free house" and I noticed there are 6 cask ales on, a selection of both local and national. I called sunday lunch time and whilst trade was brisk, the staff were still friendly and keen to serve.
***
verdict:
I was very pleased all round with my visit, and I like this kind of pub.
I would be happy to call again here off-peak to try the meals.
an 8 from me.

30 Apr 2009 13:27

Aulay's Bar, Oban

aulays own comment :
"Aulay's Bar, known simply as Aulay's to the locals, is situated in the centre of Oban, occupying the former site of the towns oldest droving inn, Tigh Clach A' Gheodha or the House of the Creek Stone.
Brimming with character, the pub has traditional back to back public and lounge bars.
Every inch of wall space is awash with a unique collection of maritime prints showing Oban's seafaring heritage throughout the centuries. "

27 Apr 2009 13:58

The Volunteer Arms, Fort William

this appeared rather shabby and run down on a recent visit.

27 Apr 2009 13:52

The Oban Inn, Oban

a recent visit to Oban confirmed this pub is now closed and boarded up.
This was a fine example of a traditional seaport bar.
I can only hope it will returned to its former state at some point.

27 Apr 2009 13:45

Champs, Sheffield

called here last summer.
one for the very young.
sports tv, darkly lit [disco style], loud music, very sticky floors & carpet, no cask ales.
not really to my liking.
verdict :
a 1 from me.

27 Apr 2009 00:02

The Thurcroft, Rotherham

passed this pub today.
It is displaying a "for sale" sign.
it looks as though it is still trading at the moment.

26 Apr 2009 23:56

The Cutler, North Anston

called this weekend.
the pub has changed hands yet again.
***
There are now no cask ales now on offer.
The saturday evenings live entertainment has stopped, with just loud disco music as a substitute.
I think the meals have also stopped.
The place went from half full to almost empty on the saturday night.
I get the feeling the place is on a downward slide.
***
verdict:
now down to a 3 from me.

The Old Angel, Doncaster

called recently for lunch. ex-Yates wine bar, not far from town centre.
outside, its a modern looking building, with some outdoor seating.
***
Inside, an L-shaped interior, with open plan seating for about 150. Not a particularly large pub for JDW. There is also a balcony with alcove seating. There is a big screen TV over the central bar, along with other smaller plasma TVs elsewhere. I think this one of JDWs "Lloyds No1" bars, and so has a disco setup in one corner for the evenings. The saturday lunch crowd were reassuringly quiet well behaved.
***
There were 10 cask ales on. The daytime bar staff were particularly "chilled out" and we were served at their leisure. The standard JDW menu was available. We were happy enougb with our choice.
***
- verdict:
we liked it a bit more in here than the other JDW [gatehouse].
slow service but everything else ok.
a 7 from me.

14 Apr 2009 13:35

The Innkeeper's Lodge Derby, Derby

we stayed at the toby inn at Chaddesden in january, on a Derby weekend trip. Its about 2 miles out of the city, and has an extremely regular bus service into Derby at about 1.50 a trip.
we got 2 nights room + continental bfast [for 2] for 39 a night on a winter offer from innkeeperslodge.
***
The toby consists of the main bar & carvery building, an accommodation annex, and a large car park. The main building is timbered, mock tudor style.
***
Inside, the whole place is very clean, comfortable, smart, nicely lit and welcoming. From the main door, there is a large bar area to the right, and an even larger carvery area to the left. In addition to the usual drinks, the bar had two cask ales on. Old speckled hen and draught bass. Both were well kept and reasonably priced.
***
A day / early evening carvery offer at 5 a head [7.50 later] meant we ate here both nights. It was excellent value, and the food was of a very high standard.
The continental breakfasts also provided a good choice of cold foods, with coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and juice drinks, etc.
We found the adjacent accommodation to be of a high standard, and were well pleased.
***
verdict:
We were extremely pleased with everything about the visit. It had also been easy to book on the internet. This visit has encouraged me to look at other toby lodges for future weekend breaks.
a well earned 9 from me.

9 Apr 2009 18:18

The Rawson Spring, Hillsborough

once more, another visit and some of the ales our group had were off form.
I have mentioned this to JDW on theire website feedback.
rating down to a 5 from me.

9 Apr 2009 13:57

Spa Lane Vaults, Chesterfield

called again recently for saturday lunch.
A lot of "bloke" groups in, due to the local football I think. It was quiet though, and we stayed for lunch. Had the beer & burger option. I think there were about 8 cask ales on offer. The landlord let me choose a cask ale instead of the fixed list. [Incidentally this happens a lot in the jdws I've called at. You only have to ask!].
***
the food arrived after a reasonable time, and was the usual. Basic but good value.
***
re : "pints weren't topped up - even after asking they still weren't satisfactory"
Can't say I've had this problem when I've called. Reckon it could be an individual staff problem.

8 Apr 2009 17:57

Cuthbert Bank, Hillsborough

closed - up for sale.

1 Apr 2009 18:04

Ye Olde Kings Head, Chester

first impression :
This attractive old pub, dating originally back to around the 1600s, is situated in the lower part of town.
***
Outside, it has the typical black timbered tudor style of many buildings in Chester. There are two front entrances. one into the bar and the other into another room that now seems to be used for dining and private hire.
I understand the "renaissance" restaurant is upstairs.
***
Inside, a small door leads into a low ceiling, beamed room. There is a mix of couch and table seating, an open coal fire with authentic firelace, and leaded windows. The central bar serves the pub and restaurant. Downstairs seating guesstimate at around 60-80.
***
it was a quiet sunday, and the restaurant was closed on our visit.
3 cask ales "should" have been on offer, but all were off on our visit.
I got the last pint of theakstons black sheep!
***
verdict:
the character of the building has been preserved, although the room was very smokey with the fire on, and the place had a feel of neglect. Two couples came in but left immediately.
great on the outside, but neglected on the inside.
only a 5 from me.

1 Apr 2009 17:55

The Rawson Spring, Hillsborough

I like this place, and its very convenient for me.
however I've noticed recently that one or two of the cask ales are going off before they're sold.
I think as things are they're notshifting as much cask ale, and could do with reducing the range.
They consistently have about 10 ales on together.

23 Mar 2009 08:25

The Lock Keeper, Worksop

called again recently.
noticed they now have another cask ale on.
currently jennings cimberland ale, at 2.45/pint.
***
table service.
waiters seem very on the ball.
nice place.
particularly in summer, with canal-side seating.

23 Mar 2009 08:18

The Brown Bear, Sheffield

re : my previous review in aug,2007...
"bare and un-looked after. mucky with fly posters on the walls. jaw-dropping beer prices [sam smiths]. if you're a student, this is as good as it gets! rating = 2 [for the beer]".
FORGET IT COMPLETELY !!
***
this is now a completely different pub, as I found when we called recently for a pre-theatre pint. [the bear, by the way, is extremely convenient for sheffield's theatre goers].
***
the structure remains the same, 2 smallish rooms either side of a central bar, but the place has been completely transformed.
It has had a total re-styling and re-furb, done in a traditional english-modern style, with open coal fire, soft lighting, wall-lit pictures, plush carpeting, etc.
***
the sam smith ales remain the same, with the cask and sovereign keg an excellent pint. also extremely well priced.
***
verdict:
a re-ranking of 2 to 7 from me.

9 Mar 2009 19:58

The Old Queens Head, Sheffield

one of the few really old buildings left in sheffield after WW2.
***
While the outside has been preserved, much of the interior has been modernised. Although the frontage with the large window [photo] is in what seems to be the dining section. This interior has been preserved to some extent, with exposed original ceiling timbers, etc.
***
thwaites beers. food available.
worth a look if your in the area and like historic pubs.
an 8 from me.

2 Mar 2009 21:43

Strugglers Inn, Lincoln

quote fron daily telegraph
Chris Arnot, 21 Sep 2007.

Guide to British pubs. Chris Arnot visits The Strugglers Inn, Lincoln

"If the beer then was anything like as good as it is today, there must have been worse places than The Strugglers Inn to have a final pint before facing the hangman.

Yet some prisoners still struggled with their captors on the way from Lincoln Castle for what was, in more senses than one, the last drop. Hence the name of the pub.

The gallows that once stood across the road have gone and the castle walls are separated from the back door of the Strugglers by a garden of dazzling colour. Licensee Alan Watts's begonias are a credit to him."

2 Mar 2009 21:21

Ritz, Lincoln

Called for tea late afternoon last saturday on a visit to lincoln.
Its a large building sat on the high street. A good walk from the main shops and cathedral. Neon Ritz sign displayed.
***
inside, it consists of a street level frontage which leads to a higher, split-level interior. This is a much larger room, and contains the bar. The decor is similar to other jdws, but also has some 1920s art-deco style furnishings, and similar style window patterns.
***
The usual jdw menu applies, service was quite prompt even though fairly busy, and the food was presentable. 12 good cask ales on pump here, which I thought was quite good.
***
verdict :
fairly standard jdw. competitively priced food & drink, plus real ales.
a 7 from me.

2 Mar 2009 14:36

Strugglers Inn, Lincoln

Called for lunch last saturday on a visit to lincoln.
a traditional brick-built pub, sitting by the castle walls.
***
inside, the pub is quite cozy and small, and consists of a central bar serving a small snug with open coal fire, and a larger public bar.
***
There is broad food selection from the chalkboard menu, or from the sandwich list. Prices vary around 3-4 for sandwiches and 4-5 for hot meals. There was an impressive choice of 7 cask ales, of national & regional origin.
***
verdict :
cozy, village pub type atmoshpere. good food and ale.
A 7 from me.

2 Mar 2009 14:35

The Garrison Hotel, Sheffield

Situated in the Hillsborough barracks complex, and accessed via the A61/penistone road. Opened in 2001, it was converted from what used to be the Grade II listed jail, guardhouse and ammunition building. It consists of 43 en-suite rooms, two conference suites, a larger function suite, and the Jailhouse bar & restaurant.
***
Inside, the Jailhouse bar and resturant is clean, smart, and comfortably done out with soft seating. Many of the original features have been retained throughout.
***
The kitchen is open seven days a week serving a wide range of meals. Fairly reasonable prices. There is currently a promotion on for 2 evening main meals. Two-for-8, Monday-Thursday, (6-9pm).
There are no cask ales currently offered.
***
verdict :
Very pleasant and comfortable place. Nice food if you're willing to pay a little over the odds for the area. Also very handy for where I work. Can get busy lunch times,
A bit disappointing with no cask ales. So a 6 from me.

24 Feb 2009 14:04

The Square Bottle, Chester

A large, modern pub with folding doors for open frontage in summer. fairly typical jdw features.
***
Inside, large open plan area, with seating for around 150+.
***
the standard jdw menu was available.
10 pumps for cask ales. all were in use.
I tried the slaters "queen bee" which was commendable.
***
verdict :
modern style building, ale was well-priced, didn't try the food.
manager was knowledgeable on his cask beers.
would call again for beer or food. however would probably avoid at weekends or peak times.
a 7 from me.

21 Feb 2009 23:13

Treble Bob, Barlborough

This is a fairly recently built pub/restaurant, on a new retail & residential plot on the A619 at M1,J30.
***
It is quite a large building with a considerable parking area, which also caters for the adjacent Ibis hotel. It also has plenty of outside seating, with benches & tables.
***
Inside, there is a fair sized bar area, combined with a larger restaurant. The area is spacious and open plan with some partitioning. Very clean and smart. It is softly lit, with pleasant background music. Ideal for dining or quiet conversation. It has a slightly up-market feel to it. The bar area has table and sofa seating for about 50. There is an open fireplace with coal-fired stove. The restaurant area has seating for about 150. The tables are well spaced, providing a degree of privacy.
***
There is an extensive menu. All-day carvery at 6.95 mon-sat, 7.95 sun, with 3 roasts and help-yourself veg. Starters & deserts for around 4. Mains for around 8, steaks at around 10-17. There is also a special deal for over-50s, with 2 courses for 5.95 at certain times. There are the usual selection of drinks, with 3 cask ales on. Spitfire, Youngs Special, and Wadworth 6X. We had the 6X at 2.50/pint, which was on form [and carefully topped up I might add!].
***
verdict :
This would be a nice place for a special occasion or intimate dinner. Very pleasant and spotlessly clean.
Slightly pricey for the area, but with cask ales thrown in, an 8 from me.

21 Feb 2009 22:57

Old Crown, Sheffield

- first impression
this is an ex stones brewery pub, on the A61 penistone road not far from the Hillsborough football ground. It is a smallish, traditional, fairly modern looking place. There is a small car parking area, covered smokers area at the rear. A few tables outside front.
***
Inside there is a large central lounge bar leading down into a tap room area with pool table. The other end is split-level, leading up into an adjoining smaller dining area. The place is clean and smart with no damage. The toilets were smart, clean, and colourfully tiled !
***
The menu has a good range of starters mains and deserts,, with mains at 5-6 and grills at 6-7, lighter snacks 2-5. There are no cask ales on. Keg J.Smiths at 2.45.
***
verdict:
Nice enough place, but I prefer old english style and real ale.
a 5 from me.

19 Feb 2009 13:55

Ye Olde Custom House Inn, Chester

- first impression
this attractive old pub, dating back to the 17th century, was originally called The Star, but was later renamed as the old custom house, as it stands opposite the custom house on watergate.
***
outside, it has the typical black timbered tudor style of many buildings in Chester. there are two front entrances. one into the bar and the other into another room that is now used for dining and private hire.
***
inside, stone steps lead up into a timber-floored, low beam ceilinged room. There is a mix of couch and table seating, two open fires, and authentic leaded windows with a view out on to watergate.
there is a central bar, serving the two front rooms of the original building, along with a large extension for diners. Seating for around 100. This eventually leads out into a tabled outdoor area.
***
there is an extensive menu, along with their daily steak & chips offer at 3.99. We found the steaks we had were good and thick, expertly cooked, and well worth the price.
3 cask ales were on offer. marstons pedigree, jennings cumberland ale, banks winter ale [guest]. The winter ale was exceptionally good, and a fairly reasonable 2.60.
***
- verdict
the character of the building has been well preserved, and the food and ale exceptional. I would be extremely please to have this as my local.
a well-deserved 9 from me.

18 Feb 2009 13:57

The Old Bell, Derby

I have to say that I too, on a recent visit, was attracted initially by the building, only to find it like a basic student pub inside.
quite dissapointing, and a waste of good potential.

10 Feb 2009 13:56

The Half Moon, Whitwell Common

called again recently. Sunday afternoon.
Quite busy.
***
this place is slipping in my estimation.
no cask ales on.
most meals have that "micro-waved" look and taste. Usually overdone.
partner had chicken breasts, so tough they wouldn't even cut with the knife.
only reason they're 2 for 1 is because they're well over-priced in the first place.
***
verdict:
very disappointed.
don't think we'll be going again, for some considerable time !
a 3 from me.

6 Feb 2009 14:06

Jorrocks, Derby

Of the four city centre pubs we visited during our weekend visit, for me this was the most dissapointing.
It has the outward look of a good old fashioned english pub, but on the inside is just another football-focussed tap room with basic furniture and blaring sports tvs.
***
No food.
There were 2 or 3 cask beers available. we had the youngs special, which was okay but a bit over-priced at 2.70/pint.
***
verdict:
"Admire the exterior and move on". couldn't agree more!
a disappointed 3 from me. mostly for the beer.

6 Feb 2009 13:47

Ye Olde Dolphin Inn, Derby

The dolphin is an attractive old coaching inn, sitting close by the cathedral.
It is noted to be Derby's oldest existing pub, dating back to 1530. It is said to be haunted, and is included in the Derby "ghost walks".
***
Enter by the front entrance and you encounter a stone slabbed passageway leading to the main bar with two rooms, a small snug with an open fire, and then on to the outside beer garden at the rear. The bar rooms are smallish & cozy, retaining much of their original features. Some parts were in need of a clean though, as noted by others.
***
There were three cask ales on. Abbot, Pedigree, and a regional. This seems to be quite a reduction from previous comments! Theres a menu with snacks and mains at quite reasonable prices.
***
verdict:
With me, this scores well for its cask ales, meal prices, and historical aspects, i.e. the "olde englishe" factor.
so an 8 from me.

6 Feb 2009 13:34

The Babington Arms, Derby

jdw comment:
The site of this Wetherspoon pub was once part of the gardens immediately behind the long-demolished Babington House. This 17th-century mansion was the home of the Babbington family, whose coat of arms depicted two baboons on a large beer or wine cask."
***
This is the more modern of the two JDWs in Derby, and has a more relaxed, "pub" fell about it. It is situated more to the southern end of the city centre, off st.peters street. It has a folding door frontage, which can be opened in in the summer. There is also a small outdoor seating area at the front.
***
The inside is mostly table seating, say for around 100-150, with a long bar along the right side. Our visit was on a saturday afternoon. The place was very busy but bar service was prompt. There were 12 cask ales on, and all different! We didn't try the meals in this instance, but the ales were in good form.
***
verdict:
not so interesting structurally as the Standing Order pub, but a friendly pub with good ale & service. A bit untidy when we called, but I think this was because it was extremely busy.
A 7 from me.

5 Feb 2009 14:07

The Standing Order, Derby

jdw site comment:
"This Wetherspoon pub was built as the Crompton & Evans Union Bank, later the City branch of the NatWest which closed in 1993 and is, appropriately, now called The Standing Order. "

5 Feb 2009 13:37

The Standing Order, Derby

There are two JDWs in Derby, and I this is the smarter one in my opinion. A town centre pub. A converted bank building with a large stone front with small outdoor seating area.
***
Inside, the entrance area has some seating, and leads into the impressive main room. This is a large, high-ceilinged area, with skylights, ornate decor and numerous portaits hanging high above. The centrally positioned bar is surrounded by open tabled seating, with some alcoved seating round the sides. These are lined with old books.
***
It was an early friday afternoon. The place was buzzing with custom. All ages.
Despite this, the bar and food service was still surprisingly fast. I think there were about 8 cask ales on. We went for the fish & chips, and abbot ale. Both were very acceptable.
***
verdict:
I tend to score on building character, ales, food, service & price, and I was tempted to give a 10 here. On reflection though, I think the beer range could have been wider here, given the volume of custom.
so a 9 from me.

5 Feb 2009 13:30

The Dominie Cross, Retford

jdw comment :
"named after the stone cross which marked Retfords southern boundary in medieval times".
***
The Dominie is comparatively new. A modern looking town centre pub, a short walk from the main square and bus station. The main entrance leads into a single large room which spreads back a long way to open air seating at the rear, for smokers, etc. The long bar on the right stands under two impressive chandeliers. There is a row of tall tables by the bar for drinkers. The other areas have table seating, for around 200. There is also a separate 'library' style room with sofa seating, as in the front area.
***
We called for lunch last saturday. The place was not particularly busy, with a slow trade. There were a few quiet drinkers in, and also a few families dining.
***
We ordered from the 2-for-6.20 menu, along with a pint of Abbot.
There were 10 cask ale pumps, with 8 in use. However I noticed some were the same, and in fact only 5 different ales were on. The Abbot turned out to be in reasonable form, although slightly cloudy. I've noticed that before here. Perhaps they don't have a large turnover on the cask ales.
***
I got served quite quickly, and the meals arrived in around 20 mins.
Food was basic but quite acceptable for the price.
***
verdict :
pleasant spot for a quick, cheap lunch and good ale. All at a very good price. The place isn't very conspicuous, and might take a bit of finding if you didn't know it was there.
a 7 from me.

24 Jan 2009 19:40

Rhinoceros, Rotherham

jdw comment :
"Clifton Park Museum, Rotherham, has a fine collection of locally produced Rockingham ware. The centrepiece of the display is the magnificent Rhinoceros Vase, the first-ever porcelain vase cast in one piece, which gives this Wetherspoon pub its name".
***
The Rhino is a modern looking town centre pub, just off all saints square. The main entrance is deceptively small, and leads into a single large room which spreads back a surprisingly long way. The long bar on the left. All the floor area has table seating, for about 150+ at a guess.
***
We called for lunch this saturday. Whilst not overflowing, the place had a brisk trade. Many elderly folk quietly watching the sports on TV. There were also a few families dining. No rowdies.
***
We ordered from the 2-for-6.20 menu, along with a pint of Abbot.
A quick count showed there were 12 cask ales on. This surprised me, as it jdws often have 10 pumps, with some not on. The Abbot was in good form.
***
I got served quite quickly, and the meals arrived in 20-25 mins, which wasn't too bad considering how bust it was. Food was basic but quite acceptable for the price.
***
verdict :
pleasant spot for a quick, cheap lunch and good ale. All at a very good price.
a 7 from me, which is quite good as I tend to reserve further points for historic pubs, etc.

24 Jan 2009 19:22

Old Crown Inn, Handsworth

possible closure.
"business opportunity" sign has been displayed for a few months.

23 Jan 2009 13:34

The Norfolk Arms, Handsworth

this pub is now closed and boarded up.

13 Jan 2009 13:46

The Bermuda Triangle, Parkstone

Dai.
I think you may have mistaken this for somewhere else.

6 Jan 2009 13:50

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

The "pub & carvery" pub chain, owned by mitchell & butler, appears to have been re-named "crown carveries", but remains under the same ownership.

6 Jan 2009 13:45

Yates's, Chester

premises still not in use.

6 Jan 2009 13:29

Swim Inn, Sheffield

whilst not exactly "small", I would say it was one of teh smaller jdw pubs I have been in. As I recall, there was also not so many cask ales on offer as usual.
That said, it is a nice place. and the usual jdw menu is available.
it is also very convenient the the "west street" brigade. [a very popular part of the city in the evenings, for those who aren't familiar].
a 6 from me.

3 Jan 2009 15:20

Legends Sports Bar, Hillsborough

for "sports bar" read watering hole for the retired and unemployed.
sorry, zero rating.

31 Dec 2008 19:10

Station Hotel, Kiveton Park

re-opened just before christmas.
haven't visited to rate it yet.

31 Dec 2008 19:00

Portland Hotel, Chesterfield

called again for lunch.
this place is always busy, no matter what day we call. All ages.
beer and food is always decent.
10 cask ales on.
real value at jdw.

31 Dec 2008 00:02

The Victoria, Chester

quote from chestertourist.com :
"The Victoria pub is situated on the former site of the HQ for the Roman Legion based in the ancient city of Chester. High cross, the exact centre of the old walled city.
The property first became a pub in 1269, and obtained its current name at the turn of the century in honour of the then Queen. Now a listed building, with it's odd shaped doors, low roof, antique oak beams (of which the main beam has been in place for some 726 years and is almost one thousand years old) it has a charm of it's own despite the cellar being positioned over St. Peters Church crypt and the courtyard being a flagged over graveyard. "
***
This attractive old pub, dating originally back to 1269, sits on one of watergate rows, by the cross in the centre of town.
Outside, it has the characteristic paned windows and black timbered style of many buildings in Chester. there is a small front entrance after climbing the steps up onto the "row".
***
inside, there are two front low-ceilinged, beamed rooms surrounding a centrally placed bar. Whilst retaining the old features, the place is smartly decorated. As well as the table and bar seating, there is a set of attractive two-seater alcoves along the wall. Beyond the bar is another small, even more ornately furnished room. Total seating for around 50-60.
***
I did not notice any menus, but it was early evening when we called. 3 cask ales were on offer, which included wells bombardier. these were slightly overpriced, at 3/pint.
***
verdict :
the character of the building has been well preserved, the ale was a little over-priced, not sure about the food.
for me, an attractive, interesting pub for a one-time visit.
not particularly good value.
a 7 from me.

29 Dec 2008 20:20

The Square Bottle, Chester

the correct name for this pub is ..
THE SQUARE BOTTLE
which I have submitted as a separate suggestion.

29 Dec 2008 19:58

The Forest House, Chester

according to chester camra site, recently re-opened as a Lloyds No1 bar. [which would explain the disco]. Previously called Mansion House.

24 Dec 2008 08:36

The Forest House, Chester

this pub is on love street just off Foregate. Just around the corner from the other jdw, The Square Bottle. However this seems to be the "plusher" of the two.
***
outside, has the appearance of a large city house, with stone stairway leading up to the entrance. To the side of the building there is a first-floor outdoor balcony structure for smokers, etc.
***
inside, there is an upper floor bar, with open plan seating and a small built-in disco setup. downstairs is quieter and much more plush, furnished more like an expensive hotel than a pub, with sofa seating, etc. Not quite sure if there is also a bar down there.
***
there were 8 hand pumps in the upper bar, 6 in use with regional ales.
we tried the meals, which were standard for jdw pubs.
***
verdict :
quite a smart establishment, with the standard jdw drink & meal offerings. As a more senior drinker, the prospect of the disco in full swing put me off a little,. However it wasn't in use when we called.
A nice place for a comfortable quiet drink ... on non-disco nights!
An overall 8 from me.

23 Dec 2008 14:19

The Albion Inn, Chester

called a while ago on a trip to chester.
a unique pub with the courage of its convictions to stick to its own individual character and standards.
okay while ever the demand is there, I suppose.
***
its well described previously.
I would also say its one to visit, if just for the novelty and good beer.
a 7 from me.

21 Dec 2008 22:10

Queens Ground Hotel, Sheffield

the queens ground hotel sits on langsett road in hillsborough, opposite the barracks. its a pubmaster pub, advertising "modern en-suite" accommodation. I called recently one workday lunch.
***
its an old fashioned post-war pub, the sort my grandad would have been used to in the 40s. [thats no knock, as I like the old pubs. Theres something I find re-assuring about pubs I remember as a kid]. on the outside, a big timber door and large green window frames with stained glass wording for "smoke room" and "billiards room". theres no car park as its a town pub. daytime custom seems to be a few locals, and groups from the offices in the barracks over the road at lunch.
***
inside theres a central bar, a decent sized lounge to the front, leading round to a billiards room to the rear with a full sized billiard table. the lounge seating and furnishings are aging [nicely] but are well-kept, clean and smart. Whilst not exceptionally ornate, it is a classic "old-style" pub.
***
you come across a yard at the rear that has been done out with seating and tables, part of which is covered. it doubles as a beer "garden" or smokers area. the toilets are basic but clean, with what looks like a recent tiling.
***
there is no food available, and there are no cask ales on. I happen to know they did have tetley cask bitter on quite some time ago, but it was obviously not selling sufficiently. I had j.smiths keg magnet ale at 2.15, which was quite acceptable.
***
verdict:
quite a nice, comfortable pub inside. but with no food or cask ales, can only give a 4.

18 Dec 2008 17:25

The Bell Inn, Nottingham

called at the bell today on a "christmas markets" day out.
the place is tastefully done out in "olde english" style in the two small bars at the front of the building. There is also a large bar to the rear inside.
unfortunately the barmaid was having great difficulty with a customers debit card in one room, there was no staff in the other, and the large bar at the rear was chocker. took this as a bad omen, and left. not rated.
on the upside, we found the roebuck [jdw] instead!

30 Nov 2008 00:29

The Roebuck Inn, Nottingham

called recently on a saturday day out to nottingham.
first impression was of a reasonably smart pub, converted from an older building.
***
inside was of a fairly modern design, about 3 large rooms and bar area, done out in open plan style. seating for something like 100. there is a smallish upstairs gallery, with a smokers area and toilets. The place seems very popular and well used, but is kept fairly tidy.
***
the bar staff were trying hard to keep up with the busy trade, but there was a 45 minute delay on meals. there were 15 cask pumps and I think 13 were in use, all with different ales. This was quite impressive to say there wasn't "festival" on. We tried the Abbot and Lees autumn gold. both were quite acceptable.
standard jdw menu. the fish & chips and 5-bean chilli were quite good, but we had a long wait as said earlier. this was around 4pm.
***
verdict:
Pleasant place, but struggles to cope when it gets busy. Nice choice of beers. Would be happy to call again.

30 Nov 2008 00:18

Gatehouse, Doncaster

a modern building. part of a new pedestrian arcade by the collonades shopping centre. The pedestrianisation theme provides for an outside seating area for the summer months, and also for smokers.
*---
the inside is also of a modern design. pretty much one large, single floor area with table seating for around 150-200.
*---
On our sunday afternoon visit the place was queitly busy. There were 8 cask ales on, of a possible 10. These were all good names, including one of my favourites, Abbot. Standard jdw menu. We had the 2-for-7.20, fish & chips and 5-bean chilli. Both were of a good standard and arrived fairly quickly. The Abbot was also on top form.
*---
verdict:
2 meals with drinks for 10. Premium ales at under 2. The wetherspoon value sure takes some beating. will calling again on our Doncaster visits.

The Park, Wadsley Bridge

extract from local paper :

Hillsborough pub reopens after facelift
14 March 2008, By Nick Ward

A POPULAR Sheffield watering hole is set to reopen with a brand new look after a 500,000 refit. The Park in Wadsley Lane, Hillsborough, closed in December to be refurbished and will reopen on Tuesday March 18.

Landlady Julia Kelly said: "The pub has been totally revamped both inside and out, and we are all very impressed with it. The aim of the refurbishment was to create a relaxing, welcoming traditional British pub and that is exactly what it has done. "We have worked hard to make sure that there is something for everyone."

Old Blue Ball, Sheffield

passed today.
this pub has a large TO LET sign displayed.

15 Oct 2008 14:16

Station Hotel, Kiveton Park

closed down, with builders in.

14 Oct 2008 08:29

Liquorice Gardens, Worksop

liquorice gardens is a large, modern style wetherspoons pub, converted from an old high street supermarket some time ago. Typical jdw large seating area and long bar. called recently Sat tea-time. manager had dropped the projector screen down for the england match. [normally folded away].
had a burger/beer and a couple more cask ales. burger was a bit basic but okay. cask ales I had were both in good nick. [pedigree and abbot]. everyone was well behaved during the match. left as it was starting to get busy after match, around 8pm.
***
verdict:
Have to agree, its not the best jdw I've been in. but beers were okay, with a good range [8-10], and food basic but edible.
so a 5 from me.

13 Oct 2008 12:39

The Shakey, Hillsborough

The shakey is a small town pub right in the middle of hillsborough, near the crossroads. it is a greene king house. theres no car park as its a town pub, with local parking available.
***
whilst not tatty, the outside design shows the place has been around a while. but the inside is very smart and modern. an open plan design, with seating areas and central standing area. the furnishings are clean and smart, and look as though they have had a recent re-furb. theres half a dozen plasma tvs placed all around for news & sport coverage. looking around, lunchtimes seem to be the regular haunt of a few retired folk.
the toilets were basic but clean.
a notice says theres a quiz night tuesdays & thursdays, with disco/kareoke fri-sun eves. I also noticed a dress code notice banning caps, etc at weekends. hillsborough can be a troublesome spot a times, being the home of the Owls football ground.
***
the landlady gives a friendly welcome. only keg beers available though, which I found odd for a GK house. had keg GK IPA at 2.15/pint. theres no food available either.
***
verdict:
a smart, comfortable pub. but with no food or cask ales, can only give a 5.

9 Oct 2008 15:54

The King Henry, Bramley

on a recent saturday evening visit, I found the re-furbed king henry quite confusing. the building is a double fronted tudor style design, with a large car park to rear, and outside seating at the front.
***
however the inside is a peculiar mix of olde worlde and modern. there is an ornate bar, with unusual wood carvings around the bar and mirrored back panel, old fashioned lighting and 1920s painted wrought iron bannister.
this is mixed with a modern open plan layout, split level floors, sofa seating, numerous plasma tvs for sport, music, a pool table in one corner and a rowing boat on one of the ceilings! to one side there is small a restaurant area [the "vasco da gama"].
***
the menu is a shocker with mains range around 16-35!
that said, the meals consist of one or two whole chickens and
the like. I'm assuming they're supposed to be in the eating style of henry VIII.
***
the keg j.smiths is 2/pint. no cask ales, although they're advertised outside.
***
verdict:
whilst on the face of it an old style pub, its really a modern one with an expensive menu. As there is no cask ales, and as I can eat just down the road 2-for-1 at the Sir Jack, I probably won't be calling again.
a 5 from me.

8 Oct 2008 16:08

The Rose and Crown, Barlborough

the rose & crown is one of the three pubs to be found in the centre of barlborough village. and in my view, probably the best one. I'm assuming its a Greene King pub, as the table brollies say so and there are a number of GK beers served.
***
outside, the pub is nicely decorated in a well-maintained half-brick, half-timbered style. it has a decent sized car park and decent lawned beer garden to the side. looks like it would be very pleasant on a warm summer day.
***
the inside has been done in a stone and timber style, with a separate restaurant section, a dining lounge to the front, and two other drinks rooms to the rear. a centrally placed bar serves all 3 rooms. One of the rear rooms is done out slightly comfier with leather sofas. the toilets are something else! the gents are immaculate, done out with a large square old-fashioned kitchen sink, gold taps, a choice of hand wash creams, deodorants, and breath fresheners. It felt a bit like walking into the house next door's bathroom!
***
the bar staff were quick to serve, friendly and talkative, to say we were new customers. the menu looked nice but was a bit pricey. keg beers included morland speckled hen. the 2 cask ales offered were titanic sundance and morland original bitter, which I had not tried before but was very good.
***
verdict:
an impressive, very well looked-after pub. seems to attract the more affluent of the village. I'm not tempted by the pricey menu but would gladly re-visit for the fine ales.
this one justly earns a 9 from me, only losing a point on the pricey meals.

8 Oct 2008 08:44

Freemasons Arms, Hillsborough

the freemasons is a small, stone fronted pub by the wier in hillsborough town centre. To the side, it has a small outdoor seating area overlooking the river, and no car park.
***
Inside is open plan with one large room. There is a make-shift disco setup for evenings, with large speakers & disco lighting.
Visited one lunchtime last week. There were about 4 customers in. The place looked bare and run down. The tables and carpet were uncleaned, and the seats were heavily drink-stained. cctv was installed and numerous theft disclaimer signs were displayed. The toilets were stinking, with a broken toilet bowl.
appears to be geared toward catering for disco-pubbers.
***
No meals. No cask ales. The barmaid didn't know what "cask" ales were. Keg beers & lagers were on. J.smiths at 1.85.
***
verdict:
I looked further for some good points. couldn't think of any.
I've tried to be objective about this, but sorry to say its my first score of zero for a review.
for me, there are other much better bars nearby.

6 Oct 2008 16:59

Junction Hotel, Woodhouse

revisited this weekend.
guest casks : wells bombardier and mordue brewery's "workie ticket" champion ale [newcastle]. both nicely on form, as always.
***
change to meal availability.
now no meals mon-wed.
only thur-sat till 8pm, sun till 6pm.

6 Oct 2008 09:43

The Unicorn, Worksop

this was open when I passed it yesterday.

6 Oct 2008 00:47

The Litten Tree, Worksop

The litten tree is situated at the northerly end of the town centre area, adjacent the canal and several other town bars in that spot. This particular one is a converted hardware store, owned as a pub initially by laurel group [Yates, etc], and since this year by the town & city pub company who took over. Theres a pay carpark next to it and other town parking close by.
***
first impression of the interior is modern style open plan with one large area, consisting of table seating for about 50-60, and standing area nearer the bar. at the rear is a built-in disco platform for the evenings.
***
we called in to eat last saturday lunch. Once seated I started to take in more of the surroundings. most of the soft seats were damaged and heavily stained with drink spillage. The menu pages were also stuck together with old drinks spills. The menu was still the standard Yates options with mains at around 5 or 2-for-5.95.
Some of the drinks were noticably well priced. guinness 2.10, j.smith 1.60, echo falls wine 4.95/bottle.
***
I ordered our meal at the bar. the staff were polite and reasonably quick. however we ended up waiting a total of over 90 minutes for our two courses. while the place was not particularly busy! that said, I noticed a sign for kitchen staff vacancies so maybe they were temporarily short staffed. I'm willing to give some lee-way here as the meals [2-for-5.95] were nicely cooked and decent portions, with the standard Yates dressed side-salad which is one of my favourites.
***
the toilets were clean and smelled fresh, but there was a display of punch holes in the wall on the way there, and one of the toilet cubicles was minus a door!
***
verdict:
I'm sure this was a nice pub when opened. however its now in need of some repair and a good clean out. the drink spillage and toilet damage is purely down to their regular "clientelle". also the kitchen could be a bit better organised.
the meals and drinks were good value, but they're obviously getting a reckless crowd in the evenings.
a 5 from me as it stands.

6 Oct 2008 00:36

Hatfeild Arms, Laughton

The Hatfeild Arms is named after the Hatfeild family who have lived in the village since the 1600s. It is a deceptively large pub standing on the main road running through the village, and has a reasonably sized car park to the rear.
***
The inside is of no particular distict style. but what I would call "modern traditional", not old english, etc. more 1950s+. It consists of a central bar serving a dining lounge and a large public bar with darts and pool table. There is also a separate restaurant room and upstairs function room for hire. Whilst the outside is a little un-inspiring, the interior is very clean throughout and well looked after. the pub seems quite popular with the villagers and on our weekend evening visit the lounge was busy with a private birthday dinner, and the function room above had a wedding party on.
***
there is a range of meals available. I have eaten here in the past, but not recently since it has changed hands. There are a range of keg beers & lagers [J.Smiths,Bass] and one guest cask. This was Nethergate brewery's "Mad Bob" which I have not come across before. A nicely balanced bitter which was in good condition. At 2.20 it was cheaper than the keg beers!

verdict:
worth another visit. a very pleasant, quiet village pub offering nice meals, good ale and friendly service.
nice but not that exceptional, so a 6 from me.

3 Oct 2008 17:04

The Park, Wadsley Bridge

The Park, named after Hillsborough park, is a large rather unspectacular brick building at the top corner of the park on Wadsley Lane. As a first time visit, it felt slightly off-putting from the outside. there is a small car park to the side, and outdoor seating to the front.
***
inside there is a large central bar. There are two bar areas and a small comfy snug as you enter the front. The place is a bit grand, partly timbered, and has the feel of a large city house. Moving round to the back there is a large lounge for diners with about four seating areas, seating around 50-60. I noticed there was a brisk lunchtime trade with diners, and the staff were busily running in and out with meals, which seemed to be quite popular. the bar and catering staff were all very chirpy and friendly.
***
I checked out the menu, which offered a good range of meals, with daily special at 3, standard mains at 4-6, grills at 7-10. sunday lunch was advertised at 4.99, with tuesday curry+drink 4, thursday 2 steak meals with bottle of wine 10.
***
two of the rooms had 3 cask hand-pumps, normally serving pedigree, black sheep and tetley bitter at around 2. However all the pumps were off on my visit! Keg J.Smiths bitter was 1.85.
***
verdict:
On approach, I was rather expecting a disappointment. But on spending a little time in there I have to say I was very satisfied all round, and would be keen to return and try the lunchtime meals. Particularly when the cask ales are back on!
The place is kept very clean [including the toilets], the meals and ale look good, all the staff were quick, polite and seem happy in their work.
All-in I'm happy to give this place an 8.

2 Oct 2008 17:35

The Admiral Rodney, Sheffield

The Admiral Rodney in loxley is a mitchell & butler "vintage inn" on the north west side of sheffield. It sits on the B6077 out of hillsborough, looking out over the rivelin valley on the edge of the peak district national park. It is a large-fronted, stone-built traditional country pub and restaurant built in the 1950s.
***
It is set back from the road, with a large car park to the front. An entrance archway leads up steps on to an open outdoor patio at the front, with seating and spectacular views out over the valley. We called recently for a weekday work lunch.
***
inside it is mainly open plan in stone and timber, numerous areas with table & chair seating. There is an open fire, used in winter.
Seating looks to be for around 100. The tables have menus and cutlery, but are not table-clothed, so can be used by non-diners. The place was quiet and there were only a few customers in at the time.
***
there is an extensive menu served all day mon-sat till 10pm, sun till 9:30. Snacks sweets at 3+, mains 7-15. There were 2 cask ales, black sheep bitter and taylors landlord. Both were in good condition. The meals we had were very tasty, but not overly large portions for the price. The sweets were particularly nice.
***
verdict:
attractive pub. nice ale and meals, though not exceptional value. Sort of place I would go for a treat occasionally.
Earns an "8" from me.

19 Sep 2008 12:44

George Inn, Woodhouse

older fashioned, double fronted stone building. small beer garden [yard]. free parking opposite. inside is open plan, but with the bar area and two other seating areas [which would have been rooms at some point in the past]. plasma tv in all rooms for sport coverage.
***
keg tetley and j.smiths is usually ok. No cask ales on though. I get the impression they don't move it much. its very much a "beer and crisps only" pub.
***
the new landlord [Dave] seems to be a bit of a character. likes a laugh and a joke, and and gets on well with his regulars. this seems to be doing his trade some good, as it was very busy when we called. staff are friendly and quick to serve.
***
paid a sunday night visit with friends who live locally. quiz night.
its a very "local" pub, and there are lots of regulars who all know each other.
everyone was having a good time. there was a bit of music on the quiz p.a. system, and folk were up and dancing. the landlord was larking about.
***
verdict:
seems to be a great meeting place for the regulars.
however loses points for me with no "history", meals or cask ales.
a "2" from me.

16 Sep 2008 19:34

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

p.s.
just re-read my review.
thank god I don't talk like I spell!

16 Sep 2008 19:07

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

visited here monday night with a few friends.
found the place to be pretty much as previously described by SilkTork. although myself I would prefer the KIT to the fat cat, as I found that a bit drab in comparison.
***
monday night is quiz night at KIT. the front bar room was quite busy with quiz goers. the back room was occupied by a practicing irish folk group. the small beer garden was empty I think, as it was a cool evening.
***
I found the quiz event to be a very hospitable experience, with a free small buffet for the customers. the staff were very attentive, helpful and knew how to handle cask ale well. [no short measures!]. as said before, whilst the pub is very welcoming, the real pull is its range and quality of ales. most I think at under 2/pint.
***
verdict:
the prices, ales, and atmosphere if this place should be the envy of other pubs, and shining example to them. I doubt if the KIT will suffer a great deal in the coming "recession".
a weel deserved "9" from me.

16 Sep 2008 18:21

The Cutler, North Anston

called last night. first time for a while since the last manager left.
saturday turn was quite good. coloured guy singing motown and the like.
looks like the manager has kept courage directors on as the regular cask ale.
it was in good condition. currently 2.35/pint.
I think the keg bitters are about 2.20.
good turnout of customers at weekends.

14 Sep 2008 14:09

Saxon Hotel, Kiveton Park

The saxon hotel is on the main road running through kiveton. It is quite an imposing, white-fronted building, sitting a-top a set of steps. It has a large car park, and outdoor seating for smokers on the patio at the top of the steps.
***
inside, there are two bars serving a large lounge which has a black, beamed ceiling with red painted panels[?], and an unusually large games room, which accomodates seating, a pool table, and also a full-size snooker table!
***
There were two barmaids, one smiled one did't.
most of the keg beers and lagers were sam smiths. when I enquired as to the availability of sam smiths old brewery "cask" bitter, she looked puzzled and should her head in a "we don't do cask here" fashion. a shame, as sam smiths cask is quite tasty and noteably cheap. I didn't see any ads or menus for meals. didn't ask.
***
there were about a dozen customers in the lounge saturday night. Many sat alone, staring at incoming customers, or the wall. I have to admit there was a certain Royston Vasey feel about it. [those who watched "league of gentlemen" will know what I mean].
***
verdict:
I like sam smiths, but no cask here so no points.
All in, I wasn't really tempted to call again.

rating structure:
0-2 building character
0-2 state of repair
0-2 cask ales, range and quality
0-2 meals, range and quality
0-2 overall service

14 Sep 2008 14:00

The Royal Oak, Barlborough

This pub is on the main road through barlborough village, and sits bang opposite the apollo pub.
First impression saturday evening was of a smartly kept place, nicely lit, with large car park and connected restaurant.
***
Inside there is a large bar area with connected pool room, and a separate lounge. The furnishings are not tatty, but the seats, carpet & decor give the feeling the place is getting ready for a re-furb.
***
The service was quick but not overly welcoming. There were two cask ales available. Greene King IPA and Abbot ale. [Not sure if this is a GK pub or not. didn't see any GK signs]. sign for kareoke wed & sat eve.
***
There are bar meals offered 12pm-9pm each day. snacks around 3, mains around 5-6. I spotted an ad for the restaurant for early bird 2-for-10, 5-7pm, mon-fri.
***
verdict:
Beer was ok and meal offers seem reasonable. didn't feel tempted to go out of my way to visit the pub again though. perhaps for the restaurant.

14 Sep 2008 13:37

Apollo Inn, Barlborough

This "pubmaster" pub is on the main street through barlborough, opposite the royal oak.
Each time I pass this place, there is a group outside, glass in hand, shouting around in a loud-mouth manner.
***
It just gives the impression of a rough-neck pub, so I haven't and won't be tempted to try it.
***
not tried. not rated.

14 Sep 2008 13:09

The Station Hotel, Treeton

passed this one yesterday.
closed down and boarded up.
not rated.

2 Sep 2008 08:33

The Cross Keys, Handsworth

pub was closed down this year and had a complete re-furb. looks quite smart now. still to try this one so haven't rated yet.

2 Sep 2008 08:27

The Cutler, North Anston

the pub continues to be very popular with folk seeking music & entertainment.
the line-up is disco on fridays, live entertainment every saturday, curry & quiz wednesdays, carvery sundays 12 till 5pm.

31 Aug 2008 18:34

Junction Hotel, Woodhouse

re-visited recently.
it appears the tetley cask has now been dropped, and there are currently two rotating guest cask ales, chosen by his regulars.
***
one on during my visit was sharpes award winning "doom bar". It was by far the best pint of doom bar I've ever had. Both I and my companion were suitably impressed, so much so that we continued to partake until the cask was no more! nuff said!

31 Aug 2008 18:30

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

The original name of this pub is the "de rhodes arms".
it now appears to have been renamed "de rodes arms".
internet searches on both names appears to work.

31 Aug 2008 18:13

The Burgoyne Arms, Sheffield

passed this today.
closed down, up for let.

31 Aug 2008 17:52

Hind, Rotherham

the Hind is a modern looking pub. sat on the A631 west bawtry road [rotherham south bypass]. It is part of the Mitchell & Butler "ember inns" chain. There is an adequate car park.
***
it is basically open plan, but with 2 or three seating areas. very modern but also very comfortable, with plush seating, alcoves, etc. very stylish.
ember inns also make a point of offering good ale, and there were a few casks on offer. I usually go for the speckled hen.
I understand food is available, but I have not tried it as we usually dine at the Brecks when over here.
***
verdict:
Quite impressive. smart and stylish. Seems to be popular.
cask ales are always good.

29 Aug 2008 13:20

Brecks, Rotherham

the brecks is a large, imposing looking building. sat on the A631 west bawtry road [rotherham south bypass]. It is a whitbread house, consisting of a pub, resturant, and premier inns lodge. There is a large car park adjacent.
***
the main entrance leads in to a large modern, timbered bar area, offering drinks and bar meals. There is also a games room to the rear. There is usually a couple of decent cask ales on. The have held the "cask marque" award for some time.
***
near the main door is another entrance leading off to the restaurant, which offers full a-la-carte and set menus. Its an old-ish building but has character, and is not "run-down". the meals are usually decent quality and service reasonable.
***
verdict:
I do like the place, and I think I'd drink here more often if I lived closer. We also like the restaurant, but as its a bit pricier than pub menus, so we only tend to go now and then as a treat. Nice place on the whole. definitely has a "hotel" feel about it.

29 Aug 2008 13:09

The Yellow Lion, Aston

recently re-visited.
4 cask ales currently offered.
speckled hen, abbot ale, black sheep bitter, tetley cask.
the hen was indeed "a most gratifying ale"!
***
the meals menu is served everyday 12pm to 9pm, main courses ranging around 6-7. can't vouch for the quality, but the few diners there seemed happy enough. the sweets cabinet also looked very tempting!
***
to add further comment..
there is ample adjacent parking.
family/games room and outdoor safe play area.
the main interior is split-level with bar area and two lounge-style rooms.
done out in stone, and timber beam.
verdict:
a nice friendly pub, not too roudy.
its not a main-stream pub, so never seems to get too full.
I think the ales are slightly dearer than others nearby, but they always seem to serve the top brands I like, and keep them in tip-top condition.

26 Aug 2008 21:33

The Beehive, Harthill

the pub has also won the Rotherham CAMRA Rural Pub of the Year 2007 award.

26 Aug 2008 20:58

The Beehive, Harthill

the beehive is one of two pubs in harthill. it sits on the main road through the village, and is the home on the "harthill morrismen" folk dancers. first impression was of a clean, looked-after place. outside painted white. attractively lit in the evenings. there is parking at the rear, plus a separate spill-over park at the side.
***
it is not an overly large premises. inside there is a central bar serving a comfortable lounge and tap room, plus a pool room a the rear. there is also a function room above the pub.
***
looking along the bar there were 3 cask beers on offer. tetley, taylors landlord, and kelham island easy rider. the taylors landlord was on form, and the service polite and speedy.
the leather-bound meals menu had a nice selection and ranging around 7-8 for main courses. a small group dining at the time seemed pleased with their choice.
***
verdict:
pleasant, quiet little pub. would be happy to visit again and possibly try the meals. let down a bit by the toilets, which I thought are ready for a re-furb.

26 Aug 2008 20:55

Rising Deer, Brampton-en-le-Morthen

we pass this village pub on the way to the double barrel and sir jack. I've not seen it open at all in at least a couple of years.
it is occupied.
maybe its someone's house now.

21 Aug 2008 14:03

Yates's, Chesterfield

being one of the pub chains that accept tesco clubcard vouchers for meals, we tend to use these quite often for saturday lunch!
chesterfield yates's is located at the top of the main street, by the spire. it's small-fronted, but is fairly large and goes back quite a way inside.
***
inside, there are are two main tabled/dining areas, at the front and the back. The long bar is centrally situated. whilst not neglected, the place has a slightly "knocked about" feel to it, chipped paintwork, spill stains, etc. this is probably a result of rough treatment by the evening revellers and football fans.
***
the standard yates menu applies, which is quite reaso nable, with 2-for-6,etc. coffee at 99p is also available. food quality and service was reasonable.
[we've noticed the staff in all the yates we've visited during the day [a good dozen or so] always seem to be particularly polite to customers].
***
verdict:
a bit rougher than some of the other yates's we've been in, but service and quality was just as good.
we would [and do] re-visit.

20 Aug 2008 21:11

Spa Lane Vaults, Chesterfield

one of two jdw's in the town. located just over the road from chesterfield's new vicar lane shopping precinct. this is another quite smart looking building, half brick, half timbered. I don't think it has its own parking, but there is plenty available nearby.
***
the entrance steps lead down into a larger area with tables & chairs. theres a longish bar, with a few cask ales to choose from. prices are very good [the usual for jdw]. This pub is smaller then the portland, and does not seem to get so busy in the day.
***
the standard jdw menu is available. we've had the fish and chips here, which is not bad for the price. service was good.
***
verdict:
we were satisfied with the prices and quality of food and drink. quieter than the portland, your more likely to get a table here at peak meal times.

20 Aug 2008 20:51

Portland Hotel, Chesterfield

located in the corner of chesterfield's lower market square, the first impression is of quite a large, expensive hotel, impressive in a cream and black exterior. I'm not sure if it has its own parking, but there is plenty available nearby.
I understand there are 12 rooms that can be hired via jdw.
***
inside, the ground floor rooms have been opened up into one large area, with some wall partitioning.
there is a the usual long wetherspoon bar, with plenty of cask ales to choose from [at least 8]. prices are excellent ranging between 1.50 and 2. As has been said, the daytime custom seems to be mainly elderly folk, and it can get quite busy, even through the week.
***
the standard jdw menu is available. we've had the beer and burger a couple of times, and these are quite decent. service was good to say how busy.
***
verdict:
we were very satisfied with the prices and quality of food and drink. I can see why its so popular. however that is exactly the drawback at times.

The Royal Oak, Chesterfield

me and the wife call here occasionally for lunch when visiting chesterfield. its a wonderfully ancient building in the "shambles" area in the centre of town. it has an incredible history, dating back to the 1200's when the original plan for the shambles area was laid out. [there are numerous historical information boards in the shambles area].
***
inside there is a central bar serving two rooms. we usually go in the lounge to eat, which is the original restored building. its very small and easily fills up at lunch time. there is a fair choice of meals available, and a range at 2-for-6. these are all quite reasonable, and service is fairly quick. there is usually 2 or 3 cask beers on, which were all well-kept when we called.
***
verdict:
a truly historic pub. one of my two favourite pubs in the town [my other is the welbeck]. its a fascinating little pub in which to get good pint and a good meal.

20 Aug 2008 14:11

Welbeck Inn, Chesterfield

me and the wife often call here for lunch when visiting chesterfield. the pub is on a side street just off the lower part of the outdoor market. I like this place. your first impression is of an un-assuming little pub that quietly goes about its trade. there are two entrances from the street, the lower one to the bar and the other to the lounge.
***
inside there is a central bar serving both rooms. we usually go in the lounge to eat, which also has a small dining room leading off it. the lounge is usually quite busy on a saturday, with mostly elderly folk, chatting away to each other. the place has an "old fashioned" feel to it, like pubs would have been when my grandad was around.
***
there is a fair choice of meals available, all at about 2.99. these are all quite reasonable, and service is quick even when busy. theres a couple of cask beers on. it used to be a kimberleys pub, then hardy hanson with olde trippe [which was gorgeous], but now its greene king's IPA.
***
verdict:
its nothing spectacular, but this is strangely one of my two favourite pubs in the town [my other is the royal oak, in the shambles]. its a nice little pub in which to get good pint, a good meal, and glimpse of local life in chesterfield!

20 Aug 2008 13:49

Lorne, Oban

called on a recent visit, Dec 07.
It looked interesting, as it appeared on the taste-of-scotland.com website as offering home made food, and also I think in the camra good beer guide.
***
The place is not large but quite attractive, done in a traditional style. seems to be one main room, with central oval bar that seems to be a characteristic of older scottish pubs. Off the sea front in the main town area.
we only stayed for a drink and look round. 2 cask ales on offer. Deuchars was nice but seemed a bit on the expensive side compared to others in the town.
would like to call again and try the food.

20 Aug 2008 08:36

The Market, Chesterfield

called on a recent visit to chesterfield.
would agree with rpadam.
handful of real ales on offer.
the ones I tried were okay.
appears more of a qwoffing house rather than a comfy market town pub, which the flowery exterior implies.

18 Aug 2008 08:26

The Royal Oak, Ulley

visited again this weekend. not been for quite a while.
pub & restaurant has had a re-furb since last visit. hasn't changed all that much though.
meals still available in the bar or restuarant.
nice range, but slightly pricey.
sam smiths cask at 1.40 a pint.
worth a visit on a pleasant summer evening.
if we ever see one!

12 Aug 2008 13:30

De Rhodes Arms, Barlborough

The De Rhodes sits by the mini roundabout at Barlborough on the A619 to worksop, near M1 junction 30. It is part of the "pub & carvery" chain, belonging to mitchell & butler.
It is quite a sizeable premises, having been extended in the past, and has its own good-sized car park.
***
Theres outdoor seating to the front, and inside the main bar and carvery area, plus a conservatory and annex. I would guess seating is for around 100. The place is clean & tidy, and well looked after. The small bar has a handful of keg beers, plus the usual drinks range. Prices not too bad. Tetley keg at 2. No cask ales currently.
***
De Rhodes is primarily a dining pub. The carvery dominates the menu, being served mon-sat all day at 3.50, and all day sun at 6.50. There is a handful of alternative mains, plus starters & sweets.
***
make no mistake though, this is not some cheap, make-shift, microwaved offering. There is a good range of oven cooked, serve-yourself veg and trimmings sitting alongside 3 large cuts of roast meat. usually ham, turkey and beef. All the meat is carved from the bone for each customer, and you can have whatever combination you choose. It is a meal you would probably pay double for elsewhere.

verdict:
absolutely unbeatable value on meals at 3.50.
you know, I do like a bargain!

12 Aug 2008 12:47

Varsity, Sheffield

called here last saturday. first time.
modern, basic, music.
about what you'd expect from varsity I suppose.
would rather be across the road in the nursery.

11 Aug 2008 12:33

Pomona, Sheffield

called here last saturday. first time.
I only had a brief look round. looks ok from outside, but inside it seemed a bit worn-out to me.
Central bar, pool table one side, seating to the other. Two [or three] cask ales on offer. I had tetley cask. there was also cumberland ale.
it didn't seem all that busy for a weekend.
verdict:
I wasn't terrible, but I wasn't tempted to stay.

11 Aug 2008 12:29

Nursery Tavern, Sheffield

called here last saturday. first time.
on arrival my impression was of a busy pub, with a quite "rough & ready" looking crowd. the outdoor covered smoking area at the front, facing on to the street, was packed most of the evening.
***
inside was also quite busy.
the interior had a well-used look about it, but not exceptionally tatty. theres a central bar with table/chair seating to the front. A more comfy style to the rear. I spotted a door to the beer garden at the back, but didn't check it out. the bar was well marked up with price tags, and there were lots of posters on display with offers.
although alarm bells rang a bit when I saw the plastic beer glasses and doormen! but I have to say I didn't feel particularly uncomfortable in the place.
most beers below 2, john smiths at 1.70.
there were a couple of cask beers on, one was of which was wells bombardier.
***
glancing around, the style looked familiar to me.
when I investigated further, it turned out to be a mitchell & butler pub, resembling their "goose" chain in style. i.e. cheap & cheerful offers on drinks & meals. Probably a good choice for a student area.

verdict:
its certainly a very popular pub at weekends.
slightly battered, but prices were good and keg beers were ok.
I don't go for cask much in M&B as I have been dissapointed a few times. theres nothing wrong with the brands, but I think they don't shift enough of it to be consistently good. If I were them, I'd take if off in these kind of pubs.
would I go again?
Yes, I reckon so if I was in the area.
I'm all for a bargain!

11 Aug 2008 12:16

The Duke of Leeds, Wales

We call here occasionally for a meal.
Its a nice, quiet, traditional little village pub, tucked away well up a side street in wales village. It has adequate parking, a small bar area, and larger dining area toward the back.
The meals are very good value if you get there early for the reduced price. I think its two courses for 5 or there abouts.
Small selection of cask beers offered, always seem to be in good condition. A bit pricey perhaps for the area. Say around 2.70 for abbot ale.

verdict:
quite friendly folk.
excellent meals value [at certain times!].
beer good but a bit pricey.

29 Jul 2008 13:43

The Benjamin Huntsman, Sheffield

This is a JD Wetherpoon pub, right in the centre of sheffield near the city hall. Its been done out in quite a modern style, with two floors and open spiral stairway. Bar on each floor.
Its like one of those "re-claimed warehouse" type buildings, with bare brick walls and exposed metal heating pipes contrasting with the big soft leather sofas. Table & chair seating for diners toward the back and upstairs.
The place is generally clean and comfortable. I expect it gets busy at weekends. Standard JDW menu. Handful of cask beers on offer, and these are usually in top condition.
staff are usually quick to serve.

29 Jul 2008 13:34

The Red Lion Inn, Litton

A stroll down the main street of the picturesque little village of Litton in the derbyshire dales brings you to the village green.
The Red Lion pub sits next to the green and forms part of a short row of terraced stone houses. It gives the impression it had originally been two of the houses, now converted.
The pub's outdoor seating spreads over on to the village green, which is shaded by mature trees, and also accommodates the village stocks!

You enter the pub through a small passageway which leads into numerous rooms with low, beamed ceilings. One of which houses a small bar and open fireplace.
This is quaintness at its quaintest, but genuine all the same!.
The usual drinks were on offer, plus 4 cask ales. adnams broadside, farmers blonde [bradfield], and two others I didn't recognize.
I was served quickly and efficiently by a young gent.
A range of meals were available at something like 5 upward. Plus some snacks [chip butty, 2].
We had a butty and the chips turned out to be home made and very tasty, delivered speedily by a very nice lady from the kitchen.
Anyone will know [or should] that its the cook that makes or breaks the food's reputation, and I can imagine the quality of the other meals would also be quite good.
The adnams broadside was also spot on.
This pub, as we found, is on a circular walk taken around tideswell dale, millers dale, and cressbrook dale.
what a pleasant end to the day?
If I have one regret, its that I don't live a little closer!

26 Jul 2008 23:38

The New Barrack Tavern, Sheffield

I go here occasionally at week-day lunch times, as I work nearby. Its nice, clean, basic pub with bar room, smaller dining room and snug. Small beer "garden" at the rear. You pass it as you travel out of sheffield on the A61(N) penistone road.
I like this pub. The food is always nice and fresh here, and reasonably priced. Always a good range of well-kept cask ales.
Some thing reliable in a world of so much crap.

24 Jul 2008 17:58

Dusty Miller, Barlborough

this is a busy, popular village pub situated on the edge of barlborough. we were first invited here to a kareoke competition night some time ago.
this turned put to be more like a cabaret show, as the quality of singing by the local contestants has to be heard to be believed!
they also hold regular live entertainment on saturdays, and this is also usually a cut above the rest. more recently we went to see a meatloaf tribute, which was very good.
there was a full house, and a good evening was had by all.
[and don't forget, all this is free!]
convertible car club meet and nostalgia music live band on wednesday eves.
***
anyway, about the pub.
its family run.
as you might guess, its always very popular on entertainment nights. I can't say I've been there at other times.
its out on its own as you leave the village, and so has plenty of parking.
inside I wouldn't say its "plush" but its comfortable.
it has a central bar with large-ish drinking area at the front and dining to the rear, [although you can probably sit anywhere during the day].
theres a wide range of meals with offers [2 for 10,etc], served I think most days, 12pm till 9pm. [weekends I think are carvery, and may differ]. I haven't eaten, so can't vouch.
they advertise a wine bar area with tapas menu.
not sure, but I think theres a family room at the rear as well.
they say they also have en-suite rooms if required.
usual kegs are on offer. There was one cask on when I visited. can't remember what.
***
this is a few miles run for us in the car, so we don't go so frequently as we might!
if you go, go for the meals or the live entertainment.
I don't think you'll be disappointed.

23 Jul 2008 21:17

The White Rose, Sheffield

one of the "sizzling pub" chain, belonging to mitchell & butler. for those who don't know, the chain has a standard menu which offers a wide range of meals, each with their own size/price range. e.g. large/med/small, single/double,etc.
This is quite handy as there is a good choice, and you may want a light meal or sometimes a good scoff!
***
the white rose sits on the road between darnall and woodhouse. its a reasonably sized pub with a fairly large dining area at the rear, and still has room for a good sized bar area at the front. one disadvantage is you have to plough through the bar to get to the diner!
plenty of parking available.
fairly large outdoor seating area on a grassed section at the front of the building.
one cask ale. tetley bitter.
***
have called here twice recently for a meal.
its clean and comfortable, but often quite busy.
get there early if you want to be able to pick your table!
the meals were quite reasonable in quality and value.
a look around confirmed that no-one had been leaving plate-fulls of food!
service is fairly brisk, even when quite busy. your not waiting hours.
***
would I go here again?
to eat, absolutely.
prefer to go up the road to the JUNCTION for the beer, though.

13 Jul 2008 11:35

George Inn, Woodhouse

I visit here occasionally when visited a friend.
its usually quite a busy pub.
popular with the locals.
average. no meals.
1 guest cask ale. often poor as they don't shift much of it.
its recently changed hands.

13 Jul 2008 11:02

The Bankers Draft, Sheffield

had lunch here recently.
its quite big, with 2 floors.
beer, meal & service weren't bad.
**
I looks like it was nice when first done out, but this is a city centre pub and gets a hell of a lot of use.
its consequently a bit battered now!
worth a look, but don't expect the ritz.

9 Jul 2008 22:02

Leeds Arms, South Anston

I haven't been in of late, but I think greene king may have sold this one off, as the GK pub sign is gone.
[only speculation at this point, though].

9 Jul 2008 21:51

Double Barrel, Thurcroft

called again recently.
same as before, but now no cask ales, as its changed hands.

9 Jul 2008 21:48

Sir Jack, Bramley

this is definitely a "diner" pub.
its on a retail site by Bramley at the side of the M1/M18 junction, along with a supermarket, macdonalds, and other businesses.
its a large building with plenty of parking.
it can get very busy early evening & weekends, but it can cope well with a LOT of people.
its popular because it does the 2-for-1 menu, which is reasonable value.
we go quite regularly for meals.
no cask ales.
**
go there to eat. if you go just for a pint, you'll be staring at diners all evening!.

9 Jul 2008 21:46

The Newcastle Arms, Worksop

I'm glad this pub has been turned around again.
in my youth, it was always a pleasant place, with good food and a nice selection of real ales.
its a small-fronted building, but goes way,way back inside!

9 Jul 2008 17:44

Kilton Inn, Worksop

no its not.
wrong pub!

9 Jul 2008 17:39

The Half Moon, Whitwell Common

have been here a few times, as its fairly local.
a big pub out on its own on the A619[?].
it used to be just a pub a long, long time ago, but its now done out mainly as a diner, with a 2-for-1 menu. its nice enough but it can get busy at times.
I think the only cask on offer is tetley bitter.
parking available.
outdoor seating, with a play area for the kids.

9 Jul 2008 13:08

The Dolphin, Dartmouth

this looks like its improved greatly since my review in 2005.
if the restaurant is as good as these reviews suggest, then well done to them, and I would be only too happy to give them another shot when I revisit dartmouth.

7 Jul 2008 18:07

The Union, Gloucester

a modernish high street pub, but done out in timber beam. pleasant enough, but not very authentic.
clean and presentable but nothing spectacular.
more interesting pubs in the area.
see "nearby" above.
cask ales: sharpes doom bar, fullers london pride.

7 Jul 2008 17:36

Printers Elbow, Torquay

called here on holiday, 2007.
small town pub at the top of town.
basic tap room style boozer, but clean, and staff friendly & helpful.
nice handfull of cask ales offered ..
J.smith, Courage bitter & directors, bays gold [local cask].
think it was about 2.50/pt. not too bad for torquay!

7 Jul 2008 14:20

The Hole in the Wall, Torquay

called here on a holiday, 2007.
sizeable pub with a timber-beamed, nautical flavour.
publicizes itself highly as the oldest pub torquay.
some parts are certainly old, but theres been quite a lot of re-furb done. probably to increase the size.
meals available, although didn't dine there.
6 well-kept cask ales on offer.

7 Jul 2008 14:15

The Bear Inn, Cirencester

visited here some time ago.
traditional old english style town pub, timber beams, etc. old features, but still quite modern.

cask ales: moles bitter (wilts).
pleasant.

7 Jul 2008 13:49

had a meal this time [lunch].
usual wetherspoon good value and fair quality.
four nice cask ales on.
nice bar and friendly staff.

7 Jul 2008 08:44

The Grafton Hotel, Worksop

we visited this pub a short while ago for the first time. we were made welcome, and were introduced to the cask ales [on request].
It didn't feel like a pub in the lounge. Its more like sitting in someones front room, it was that comfy!
also glad to see someones mentioned the cheap ale. I'd not seen beer at their prices for some time.
top marks, guys.

2 Jul 2008 18:20

Romans Rest, Worksop

New-build pub on the edge of town. Celtic point is a new residential estate with a small retail park, and it looks like the pub is designed mainly to serve this.
Its a hardy-hanson pub, recently aquired by greene-king. A smart, clean place, consisting of bar and family dining areas, plus an indoor play center for kids, and outdoor/smoking area.
Varied menu and drinks, usually with a couple of greene-king cask ales on offer. IPA,abbot, etc. The ale is always well looked after.
meals are averagely priced. There is cheaper in the area.
worth a visit if you're in the area.

2 Jul 2008 18:08

The Lock Keeper, Worksop

this is a "fairly" new marstons pub/restaurant, built by the side of a lock on the chesterfield canal.
it is a large establishment, with ample parking and easy access from the A57 worksop ring-road.
outdoors is canal-side seating, smoking area, childrens play area.
indoors is a large interior with multiple dining rooms and central bar.
the wide range of meals are offered on a permanent 2-for-1 pricing basis. making most of them reasonably priced.
usual range of drinks. Marstons pedigree on as cask.
We go here a lot, so it must good!

2 Jul 2008 14:09

Kilton Inn, Worksop

I think this is closed now.

1 Jul 2008 18:17

Lordens Hotel, Dinnington

haven't been here for a while.
the lordens is an aging pub, and in need of some renovation.
some parking, family room, and a safe play area to the rear.
don't think there are any cask ales now.

1 Jul 2008 18:14

Monk's Bridge Farm Pub Restaurant, Dinnington

this is a new-build pub/restaurant, designed I think to attract custom from the adjacent new housing estate. [the area is ex-colliery and is being re-generated].

It is quite a large building with almost all the area designed for dining. There is a small bar area.
Its quite plush and modern, and offers one or two cask ales. plenty of parking.
personally I think the menu is a bit on the expensive side for a pub, and for the area.
alright for a posh do but plenty of cheaper options in the area.

1 Jul 2008 17:55

The Dominie Cross, Retford

have called a few times.
can't say I was too disappointed here.
pretty much the average for wetherspoon [which I generally like, for "cheap-n-cheerful"].
reasonable range of cask ales.
haven't had a bad pint yet.

1 Jul 2008 14:21

The Rum Runner, Retford

1 Jul 2008 14:17

The George Hotel, Inveraray

invararay in a lovely little village in a spectacular area, and the George Hotel complements it beautifully.
have visited a few times for the bar.
its appears bit gloomy after outside, but once your accustomed, all is revealed.
the place is well looked after, with spacious bar and dining areas, good range of drinks, with cask ales & whiskies.

1 Jul 2008 14:09

The Squirrel Inn, Dinnington

70's era village pub, particularly popular with the younger crowd.
music & sport TV.
New-build pub opened just down the road.
this one is now up for sale, I think.

1 Jul 2008 13:52

The Village Inn, Arrochar

visited arrochar in april 2007.
this pub is a traditional-styled village bar by loch long, aimed at attracting quieter custom.
it is set back from the lochside road, and tastefully done out with a couple of bars, outdoor garden seating at the front facing out over the loch.
lovely view.
very impressive selection of whiskies.
handful of beers, including belhaven best.
pleasant any time of year, I would say.

1 Jul 2008 13:48

Ben Arthurs Bothy, Arrochar

visited arrochar in april 2007.
this pub is a modern-styled village bar by loch long, aimed at attracting a younger crowd I think.
regular music.
smaller bar at front, larger bar to rear.
the rear bar is a little basic but has a long, windowed rear view with an impressive view out over the loch.
outdoor garden seating at the rear also faces over the loch.
pleasant in summer, so long as not too rowdy.

1 Jul 2008 13:41

Junction Hotel, Woodhouse

this is a nice, quiet, frieldnly, clean & smart little pub tucked away in the sheffield suburb of woodhouse.
landlord is proud of his selection of cask ales.
In addition to the normal keg selections, he has tetley cask bitter, and normally two guest ales, which are always top quality.
meals on offer most days/eves, with "fresh fish" day on friday and special sunday lunch.
great place for a quiet pint.
always a pleasure to visit here.

always a good sign!

30 Jun 2008 18:32

lovely traditional pub. Lots of "memorabilia" on display.
you could spend most of your visit just looking around!
lots of character. very popular with locals.

bit pricey, but goes with the territory.

30 Jun 2008 18:26

Bucaneer Inn, Babbacombe

revisited on a holiday trip last week.
would re-iterate my previous comment from last year.
st.austell tribute, hsd, buccaneer on as cask.
one of the few places in babbacombe I can consistently get a good pint o cask with a decent head!.

30 Jun 2008 18:23

The Yates's, Torquay

Called in for lunch last week during a holiday trip.
its tucked down a side street, but once in I was pleasantly surprised. It was quiet, clean and tidy, and had some very good value meal deals. wine at 5/bottle.
would definately recommend it & re-visit.
Yates seem to be able to put on this kind of atmosphere during the day, and then metamorph into a disco in the evenings!

30 Jun 2008 18:17

The Hogshead, Torquay

passed this one during a visit to torquay last week.
appears to be closed down at the moment.

30 Jun 2008 18:10

yummy!

17 Jun 2008 18:15

The Cutler, North Anston

this pub has just changed hands again recently.
even after an admirable effort by the last managers.
remains to be seen how it will go now.

17 Jun 2008 18:10

The Rawson Spring, Hillsborough

the rawson spring is originally a converted swimming pool building.
It has been a pub called "the deep end" in the past, which closed.
it consists of a large rectangular seating area and bar occupying the old pool area, with extra rooms toward the front, and an outside area.

it is now a popular in-town lunchtime stop-off with good selection of around 8-10 cask ales, keg beers & lagers, & bottled continentals, etc.
basically the usual wetherspoon selection of drinks & meal deals.
this is a day-time pub for me though. can't vouch for weekends & evenings.

plenty of picture-framed local historical information on display.
some shun wetherspoon pubs, but I always admire their ethos of restoring and utilizing some of the countries otherwise derelict properties, along with excellent value pricing.

6 Mar 2008 14:20

The Cutler, North Anston

just another update on the cutler at anston.

the cask ale trials have been going okay. the landlord is keen to promote these.

some of the beers already trialled are ..
morland old speckled hen
shepherd neame spitfire
theakston old peculiar
theakston bitter
bateman xb

the landlord tells me has been trying a guest cask a week, but is now clearing it by mid-week, so is considering two guests.

his next beer due is to be courage directors.

keg bitter is 1.85
cask real ale is 2.10
double spirits are 2.10
he also has some good meal deals on offer.

14 Feb 2008 22:29

The Oban Inn, Oban

two regional casks were on offer.
plenty of whiskies for those inclined. [including me!].

14 Jan 2008 13:55

The Cutler, North Anston

The Cutler
Woodsetts Road, Anston, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S25 4EQ
Tel: 01909 561762

latest on the cutler at 28-12-07.
this pub has been a keg-only pub for some time.
the new landlord has recently trialled a guest cask of old speckled hen at 2.10 a pint, which he says has gone down quite well. [At this price, how can you say no!].
I believe he is planning to make this ale a regular cask in the near future.

more local support would probably be mutually beneficial, and provide encouragement to widen the range of casks in the future.

The John Smiths keg is still on at 1.85, along with the meals menu stated earlier.

28 Dec 2007 20:06

The Victoria Hotel, Leeds

this one has a good read-up on the internet.
tried it on a recent weekend visit. closed.
visitors please note this noe is currently closed all day sundays.

13 Dec 2007 13:59

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

have to agree with "incredible range of beers".
seemed a bit out of the way, but worth a visit.
quality brews are definitely their priority.

14 Aug 2007 13:43

The Brown Bear, Sheffield

bare and un-looked after. mucky with fly posters on the walls. jaw-dropping beer prices [sam smiths]. if you're a student, this is as good as it gets!
rating = 2 [for the beer]

14 Aug 2007 13:40

The Millwright Arms, Warwick

Passed this one on the bus on a recent day visit to warwick. Unfortunately didnt get the chance to go in!
looks a nice old thatch building, though. One for another day.

14 Aug 2007 13:27

The Old Thatch Tavern, Stratford Upon Avon

Nice old thatch building by the market place.
Called in but all the cask ales had been drunk dry.
This might have been due the fact that it was the bulldog rally bikers weekend! Didnt stay. One for another day, I think?

14 Aug 2007 13:26

The Golden Bee, Stratford Upon Avon

Called here again during a recent weekend visit.
The place has a well-used feel to it. Standard cheap and cheerful wetherspoon.
On balance though, if youre looking for a cheap meal with cask ale, it suffices. The place is quite large and can cope with a lot of people. Busy as weekends.

The Garrick Inn, Stratford Upon Avon

This pub has got one of the most impressive mediaeval frontages I have seen, dating back to 14th century. Claims to be the oldest in Stratford.
There is a front bar, leading further into the building to larger drinking and dining area.
The well-kept cask beers on offer were greene-king ipa, abbot, speckled hen, with a guest of st.austell tribute Cornish ale.
Well worth a visit if you particularly like old english pubs.

The Town Wall Tavern, Coventry

I was told by a local on a recent visit that if I liked real ale and a quiet little pub, I should try this one. I wasnt disappointed.
It sits at the start of spon street, just over the road from the shopping centre, [but go round the other side of the church].
The pub is not trendy or particularly old, but what I would call traditional. Tap room with TV, larger lounge and outside seating, and at the front, a small snug called the donkey box.
The exceptional point here for me though was that they had around 9 high quality cask beers on offer, which were obviously [and understandably] popular with the regular crowd. Names like adnams, fullers, deuchars were present, along with other guests. The bar staff were also very helpful and keen to help you choose a beer to your liking. We called on a Friday early evening and it wasnt particularly over-busy.
As a cask ale drinker, I would add this to my best pubs list for Coventry.

The Old Windmill, Coventry

This is one of my favorite combinations.
Old [but looked-after] building [13th century], quality cask ales [6], reasonable prices, friendly and prompt service.
On entering the main door, an old stone pathway leads you through the building past numerous little snug rooms, to the main room and bar, which has a LARGE coal fire place. Just the job in winter.
lovely pub all round.
However, beware weekends - very popular, as are all the spon street bars.

13 Aug 2007 18:11

The Malt Shovel, Coventry

Went well out of our way from town to get to this one.
Didnt feel it was worth it in the end.
From spon street to spon end, passed through a very dodgy estate and subway, known for trouble.
Get there and no cask ales on [shucks!].
May have picked a bad time looking at previous reviews, but wont bother again.

13 Aug 2007 18:01

Earl of Mercia, Coventry

Called here a couple of times during a recent weekend visit. The place has a used feel to it, but is clean. The cask beers were good and food adequate & well-priced.
More of a disco at night, sometimes charging entry.
Would go again [fine in the daytime].

13 Aug 2007 17:59

Flying Standard, Coventry

Called here a few times during a recent weekend visit.
The place has a well-used feel to it and, as has been said, seems to be the haunt of the professional drinker.
However I have to say everyone was well-behaved during the day and early evening.
The cask beers were good and food adequate & well-priced, separate dining area.
On balance Id give it the thumbs up.
Would go again.

23 Jul 2007 18:03

The Dolphin, Dartmouth

appeared to be scruffy and un-looked after to me.
Although as said, upstairs restaurant looks ok.
No match for the Cherub just up the road.
Just add the icing, 2 cask ales on offer at 3/pint !
A bit disappointing.

23 Jul 2007 18:01

22 Jun 2007 22:02

Blue Coat , Rotherham

agree with everything thats been said already.
standard wetherspoon menu also available.

I also read in the wetherspoon magazine that the manager and staff spend time at local breweries, learning how to handle cask ales properly.
commendable practice indeed.
they have also had the opportunity to produce their own ale at one of the breweries, which was on sale in the bar.

mock gallows have been chucked out !

19 Jun 2007 17:58

19 Jun 2007 17:45

all this and sam smiths cask at around 1.36 a pint.

belongs to greene king's old-english-inn chain.
very popular with students, although they weren't a problem when we stayed there.
couple of cask ales on offer, but were poorly kept.
[they probably have trouble shifting cask ale in a student bar].
meals were nice, and also offer good value at certain times of the day, as promotions apply.
5-10 min walk into town.
would stay again.. at right price!
