First visit to the Robert Pocock via the Tilbury to Gravesend ferry and I sat outside opposite the Library enjoying the Summer weather watching the people of Gravesend go about their business.
On Monday a pint is reduced 20p so I paid 230p for a decent pint brewed at Southwold by Adnams.
Will go back again sometime.

18 Oct 2011 21:31
I do miss the beer festival which was an annual evnt but given the circumstances I can understand the reasons why it is now cancelled but the pub is not the same without John.

16 Aug 2011 09:19
If you see a tall guy around 60 with fuzzy hair that would be Rory McGrath who lives near by and is often seen on his bicycle around the town.
Apart from that its not a bad pub.
14 Aug 2011 11:37
The White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye

Major building work next door as they develop more flats so very noisy at the moment.
26 Jul 2011 11:29
Woodfordes Wherry now 350p a pint and Fosters nearly 400p a pint.
Dreary interior against a great riverside view.
13 Jul 2011 09:16

A GK pub so thats it.

20 Aug 2010 15:26
The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester
New management moved in last month perhaps they can stop the decline in standards.
30 Jul 2010 09:56
Sad to read in Julys edition of TAP that John the landlord died on the 29 th April.
19 Jul 2010 08:51
The Three Horseshoes, Mole Hill Green
Beers include Speckled Hen Abbott and IPA so no choice being a GK pub but I had an Aspells Cider @320p.
Darren the Landlord was a great guy saying I could spend the night in my tent for 5 so I stayed the night in the large field at the back but the sight and sound of the RyanAir planes landing at the Airport which is 1 mile away were a big distraction.
Would I return probably yes as its a great old thatched building with plenty of character.
4 Jul 2010 12:37
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Visited Friday and the place is alive and doing well and has 5 stars on the Doors...beers nothing special but hoping things will improve with a few local beers coming soon.

5 Jun 2010 08:17
Last week paid a lunchtime visit served in 30 seconds and the beer was topped up without asking and the barman was very attentive to his regulars of whom most are over 60.Beer was good quality and for 189p a pint I hace no complaints of this JDW pub.
16 May 2010 08:37
The Woodlands Edge, South Ockendon
Great news they have Abott on the pump again after a 6 month absence but still no other real ales despite being a gk pub.
Its a start.
16 May 2010 08:25
Full marks to the bar staff when I was here a week ago when the beer I ordered was flat and a member of the staff asked me what I was drinking and replaced it for me with a pint of Abott with an apology.
If only more pubs were more customer focused.
16 May 2010 08:14
My friend has seen an old rock star with a dodgy haircut in here with his mates but he never buys a round.
6 May 2010 10:56
Another visit planned for Monday weather permitting I will sit outside again.
Lets hope the toilets are in better shape.

5 Apr 2010 09:06
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
I cant wait for your update billy but please no more private messages because your not worth it.
3 Apr 2010 19:44
Incredible a pint of Pride is now 330p a pint and ESB at 385p a pint a 40p increase on a pint I was at the Flask in Highgate last Month and it was cheaper to drink there so how can you justify higher prices than affluent London.
1 Apr 2010 20:28

Another visit yesterday and had a pint of Brentwood Gold 4.3 % and another pint of Charlie Pecks at 5.2% which makes 3 ales brewed by the Brentwood Brewing co.
Last year I remember they had Clockwork Orange by BBC at 8 % but have not sen it since.
23 Feb 2010 20:34
Beers on sale yesterday included Hobgoblin, Abbot and Spooky Moon a 3.4% beer brewed by local company Brentwood Brewery.
Price of a pint was 280p and considering I paid 340p for a pint of London Pride in Chelsea the day before its a bargain.
23 Feb 2010 20:26
Que Pasa whats going on it seems nada according to the latest review sin duda.
23 Feb 2010 12:14
Next to a zebra crossing in a busy road the real ale on sale was limited guess things were different when Pink Floyd used to practice here in the 60's.
22 Feb 2010 09:58
Enjoyed a pint of Adnams bitter also Broadside and London Pride available so not a bad selection and priced at 330p a pint but this is Chelsea.
Overall a nice corner pub with a pool table room upstairs.
22 Feb 2010 09:53
Beers on Sunday today included Winter warmer by Brentwood Brewing co
an another dedicated to a local guy at 5.2% it is nice to see local beers on sale.
Service is quick and a pint is full so no complaints.
21 Feb 2010 20:38
I am sorry to hear of your experience clea I too meet the tall bald guy last night and he told my friend and I that the table we were sitting at was reserved for 7.30 pm we paid no notice as it was only 6pm and people were coming and going allthe time. But I am upset at your treatment I can only suggest you try to speak to them again or contact Fullers Head Office and make a complaint..and this is from a Fullers shareholder for the last 10 years.
There is no need for rudeness from the manager.
21 Feb 2010 20:21
Pub off the Kings road which is famous because Pink Floyd recorded Arnold Layne in the recording studio accross the road(the house with the head of a cow).
Nothing special beer wise.
21 Feb 2010 11:05
A Fullers pub a 3 story Georgian building although the bar is on the ground floor and sat in a ante room next to the fire and its old fashioned and a quirky sort of place and lit by candles.
London Pride ,Discovery and other Fullers beers on I had a pint of Bengal Lancer a new IPA at 5% as the ESB was not on.Beers sampled in great form but expensive at 330p for Pride but this is North London.
This is my friends local and its one of the best .
21 Feb 2010 10:46
First ever visit Saturday and settled for a pint of London Pride and place was packed so sat outside in the cold by the front door..cost 330p a pint and the toilets down a staircase were pretty poor..
This was lunchtime time spent about 20 minutes.
21 Feb 2010 10:12

Can you believe they had Anker Gouden Ambio on sale at 8% and this before you get on the plane..!
3 Nov 2009 18:56
Enjoyed 3 pints of Old Thumper by the New Forest brewer Ringwoods yesterday and at 169p a pint excellent value and the staff ar very quick serving customers and this during a lunch time.
No faults with the condition of the beer and the despite the run down aspect of the area everyone I spoke to was friendly.

29 Oct 2009 14:06
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
This pub should be preserved for ever like the Moose.
24 Oct 2009 08:40
I prefered it when it was a Punch tavern pub as I understand the manager was going to buy it from them and Shepherd Neame got there first so the result is one unhappy landlord.
24 Oct 2009 08:38
Enjoyed a pint of Gold yesterday for 189p its really cheap and service was quick.
Excellent choice of beers and the beer festival is due soon.
16 Oct 2009 08:58

15 Sep 2009 17:39
Over-rated restaurant not place to go for a drink and the service is slow.
14 Sep 2009 14:06

The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester
Best unspoilt pub in Cambridge with Adnams @240p a pint and a guest ale(Norfolk Wherry or Landlord) @260p a pint.Always well kept by John and Karolin who are very welcoming.
4 Sep 2009 19:11
The Woodlands Edge, South Ockendon
I ordered a half of cider and a half of Guinness the other day and the gay Polish barman put them in the same pint glass what a joker.
2 Sep 2009 14:38
Last time I went in there a big guy threatened me for staring at his girlfriend and I'm gay.
1 Sep 2009 21:54
Another pretend restaurant type pub but they do sell Woodfordes Wherry.
Used to be a great tradional drinking pub now the Sloanes that use the Criketers up the road have taken over dont you know.
31 Aug 2009 09:16
Another pretend restaurant type pub but they do sell Woodfordes Wherry.

31 Aug 2009 09:16
Best alternative to the Alma Arms which is full of greybeards and the GreenMan now closed but opening soon as another restaurant large choice of real ales one problem is getting to the pub.
31 Aug 2009 09:10
Used to be a fine real ale pub but the grey beards have taken over so I dont bother going there now and the Green Man up the road has closed down there is no choice.
31 Aug 2009 07:43
The Old English Gentleman, Harston
Re-opened last month as the Vujon another restaurant.
29 Aug 2009 16:07
The Red Lion is lacking in atmosphere and the choice of ales is disappointing I would prefer it if Wetherspoons took it over at least it would less moribund.
28 Aug 2009 20:30
The Old English Gentleman (OEG), Saffron Walden
The problem with a nice Market town like SW is the quality of pubs does not always reflect the same atmosphere and the OEG is a fine looking pub from the outside but there is a certain clientale who want a fight at the week-end.. day time its fine but night time forget it.
27 Aug 2009 11:36
The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford
On a recent visit I had a pint of OXT at 200p a pint and a pint of Jake the Snake at 280p and the place was packed out due to a funeral whoever he was he must have been popular.
24 Aug 2009 14:01
Beer Festival coming soon with over 50 different beers including Pucks Folly.
24 Aug 2009 13:50
Paid another visit and again the Pedigree was warm and uninspiring and the other beer was a Banks so no choice again .
At least the Plough in Cranham re-opened last week perhaps the staff there will be a bit more friendly and speak to you.
23 Aug 2009 11:02
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
Yes its a shame it closes at 2.30pm during the week when the Regal down the road is open from 9am to 11pm but thats a Wetherspoons pub but the point is how do these small backstreet pubs survive without their regulars.
I dont like foodie pubs like the Kingston Arms and that leaves the Cambridge Blue and the Let Live both of which have their own style.
23 Aug 2009 10:49
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Still closed and I cant see it opening this year with 4 months to go it will be a year since it closed down ..there is a rumour it has been sold for 625k to a private buyer.
23 Aug 2009 10:37
Only joking about the Windmill at the top of the hill strange they should re-name it as everyone knows it as the Bridgehouse.
13 Aug 2009 10:09
Been in a few times and beer is cheap and in good condition and the staff are pleasant to me of course you get the usual lonely blokes drinking in there every day and there is a few dodgy blokes who have served time for killing their wives but I have never seen any trouble in the day time I cant talk about nights as I usually stay in.
Wetherspoons are great for a cheap pint what more do people want.
13 Aug 2009 10:05
The White Hart Inn, Margaretting Tye
Went to this pub last night for the first time a lovely old pub in a rural setting and large gardens however once inside its been modernised in a Wetherspoons style which was a let down..they are advertising 2 rooms for b&b its more like a hotel than a pub.
They had 6 beers chalked above the bar including Adnams bitter and Broadside I had a pint of Mighty Oak @280p which was in good condition the only problem was the wait as the foodies had taken over the bar I waited 5 minutes while someone ordered an apple drink and the barstaff explained to him what it was.
I must say I prefer the Viper at Mill Green for the traditional pub without the foodies.
10 Aug 2009 08:25
Landlord Johns beers are top rated by everyone who visits his pub and the new chef is a cordon blue rated chef in his own right.
28 Jul 2009 14:35
The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester
A great weekend spent at the BlueBall and nice to see Rory McGrath enjoying a pint of Adnams hope to see him again soon he is a funny guy.
27 Jul 2009 10:25
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
No longer serving the excellent Tiger but a similar beer called Jack.
27 Jul 2009 10:20
Went in last week and the place was empty cant see it remaining open for much longer.
23 Jul 2009 10:11
Well I was there Saturday lunchtime and had a nice pint of Warrior which was 4.4% volume. At 205p you cant get a cheaper pint in Cambridge yes the place is a bit soulless and no one talks to me but the Polish bar staff are friendly enough.
20 Jul 2009 08:56
The rabbits in the cage have long gone and so have the customers.
20 Jul 2009 08:50
Went past yesterday lunchtime and the place was empty I guess the silver beards have been effected by the credit crunch like every one else.
20 Jul 2009 08:48
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
I'm standing outside the GM at the moment its partially boarded up after 3 break-ins over the past 6 months.. do you fancy meeting up..?
17 Jul 2009 10:06
Well that was a cheap round .. I was the only one there lunchtime..lol.
16 Jul 2009 11:05
No dogs allowed so that keeps the riff raff out and that includes me..!
15 Jul 2009 09:12
I will be drinking there tomorrow lunchtime I will be with my lurcher dog so should be easy to recognize me..I will buy a drink for anyone who knows me..!
14 Jul 2009 10:34
In reply to the hungryfrog I do appreciate good ale and the beer was top quality(as it was before the new people arrived) but i went in last week and spent nearly 20 for a couple of beers and a sandwich .
In todays times every penny counts and I am lucky to be able to afford to spend 20 in a lunchtime but the place was almost empty so obviously many office workers cannot afford more than one drink and a sandwich as was clearly the case last week.
I like the OXT its a great pub and spend most lunchtimes there rather than the White Horse which is shame as I have always used the WH in the past.
1 Jul 2009 09:41
Lots of beers on now and the place is cleaner and fresher but ESB @ 345p a pint and London Pride @ 295p is a bit expensive.
When Nigel was there a curry was 550p and great value and now a curry is 700p and the cheapest sandwich is 400p so prices have increased by 30% since Nigel was there.
Lunchtime was very quiet with a few office people having lunch but apart from them it was moribund.
25 Jun 2009 13:36
Tried a VIPA beer last night and it was great other beers include Jake the Snake and Oscar Wilde all local beers and also a Nethergate beer from Clare in Suffolk.
22 Jun 2009 13:33
Lovely thatched building with a large garden the bar itself is small if you exclude the restaurant part.
I had a pint of Hardy & Hanson @270p which was above average.
Worth a visit although it is a GK pub.
21 Jun 2009 11:40
Couple of nice beers on this week including Dounle Door a 5% beer from Weymouth a dark hoppy beer and Radgie Gadgie a 4.8% beer from Walsend a copper coloured beer also Marstons Old Empire which is a regular at the Regal.. all for 205 p which is a bargain.
13 Jun 2009 10:26
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Closed since before Xmas now and little chance of it re-opening this year the place needs a lot of work spent on it inside and out its looking very run down with weeds growing in the front and the back garden a jungle with rubbish everywhere.
The board outside sales anyone interested should contact Punch Taverns but with a rent of 1200 a week who would possibly want to take this on.If they reduced it to 500 they might get a tenant but the Brewery are greedy.
12 Jun 2009 18:46
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Still closed cant see it opening this year perhaps Barry and Kanga will re-lease it again..
lol.
11 Jun 2009 17:30
The Woodlands Edge, South Ockendon
A GK pub that does not sell real ales as they said there was no demand for it..Avoid.
11 Jun 2009 17:27
I'll be there in a few weeks time I'm going to The Swan Beer Festival in Little Totham starting the 14th June and I will pay a visit to the Blue Boar as it is a year since I was last year.
24 May 2009 20:09
According to the web-site the beer festival is from 14th June to 21st June this year.. great.
12 May 2009 22:00
The range of beers is disappointing...and the food is very expensive.
11 May 2009 22:42
I'm sorry to read the comments below I've always had a great time at the Swan and John is a lovely guy all I can say is you should speak to John about the bad experience you had and I'm sure he would compensate you.
I ask stoopish to visit the pub again and give it another chance why not go to the Beer Festival in June I will be there for 3 days myself and I'm sure stoopish will enjoy it.
2 Apr 2009 19:16
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
The former management ran the pub into the ground.
26 Mar 2009 12:14
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
The Pub closed for a few years in the 90's and its a shame to see this happen again and the sooner it re-opens the better preferably as a traditional pub serving real ale and with a shell fish /seafood outlet.
23 Mar 2009 12:33
I should mention real ales are 165p a pint Monday to Thursday according to the notice behind the bar so cheap compared to other local pubs.
17 Mar 2009 10:00
Went in last week almost a year after my last visit at 11am and had the all day breakfast at 390p which included a Guinness which usually sells at 270p so the breakfast worked out at 120p for double everything. The food was well cooked and great value at 120p incredible.
Real ales included Bombardier so not much selection .
Overall not a bad experience but poor selection of ales.
I give 6/10.
17 Mar 2009 09:57
First visit last Saturday and the music /noise was incredibly loud I had to shout to get my order across the bar .
Real ales were Bombardier and Youngs bitter and my Guinness was 310p a pint.
I prefer The Swan next door.
17 Mar 2009 09:47
Popped in and had a guinness last week which was average now called the sex arms apparently according to the lettering outside.
17 Mar 2009 09:43
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Yes what a shame a great pub with a fine tradition has closed for good due to licensing problems and due to the fact Lara was deported from the UK back to South Afica due to her not having a valid work permit.
7 Mar 2009 14:34
Real ales on the weekend included Adnams Broadside..London Porter at 7%...a beer from Fat Cat brewery at 3.5% and Adnams ordinary bitter..all top quality.
I stick to Broadside at 260p which is good value.
Staff are very helpful and dogs are welcomed overall a great local pub in the village.
3 Mar 2009 09:37
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
I paid a visit this weekend and the guy with the scruffy hair is indeed back behind the bar serving top quality ales and the kitchen was back open too so things are back to normal. I drank my usual Tiger which was excellent and my friend tried a local beer at 7.8% volume which was great.
And nice to see the toilets rendered and re-tiled.
1 Mar 2009 09:26
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
The Pub is now closed since Xmas due to licensing problems.
1 Mar 2009 09:14
The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester
Great news John the landlord is out of hospital and back behind the bar and the Adnams Bitter is as good as usual and a roaring fire to welcome you.
1 Mar 2009 09:11
No decent ales on except Pedigree and Jennings which was flat and warm and undrinkable and full of students and chavs as usual..a waste of time for the discerning real ale drinker.
I wont go there again after last night.
26 Feb 2009 16:29
Funny its been called the Bridgehouse for over 200 years and they have named it The Windmill strange because being Essex theres not a Windmill in sight..
26 Feb 2009 16:26
More of a hotel than a pub but dont be put off the Ruddles County is always good as well as the Abbot and prices are not expensive bearing in mind it is a Hotel..
Popular the week-end when you can sit down on the sofa and read the national papers including the FT.
When you think this closed down 10 years ago due to lack of custom the turn around is impressive.
22 Feb 2009 11:07
I agree this pub is not dog friendly and I usually go to the Blue Ball Inn further down the road where my dog gets a bonio biscuit every time we visit its a tradition.
22 Feb 2009 10:57
Glowing review in last Saturdays Telegraph. They sell some nice beer apparently including Four Candles and Bitter all own -brew ales.
11 Feb 2009 21:59
The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester
The opening hours have been reduced due to the illhealth of John the landlord of the past 10 years I hope he gets well soon this is a great little pub with good beer and interesting locals.
5 Feb 2009 20:42
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
Afraid the friendly guy with scruffy hair has left which is a shame and the kitchen is no longer open most weekdays however the beer is top quality as usual which is all that counts I stick to Tiger which is always great.Probably the best ale house in Cambridge Ale district.
5 Feb 2009 20:36
Paid a visit last week and the porkpie I ordered was awful with a hard crust and a strange colour I would not touch the food in future the beer was fair.
5 Feb 2009 20:31
Well thats a surprise I thought it had shut for good.I will be in Cambridge next week and pop in for a pint to find out the truth.
1 Feb 2009 08:26
Disappointed the price of food has gone up the fillet stake is now over 15 which is too much so we doubt if we will eat there again. The beer though was excellent as usual and the Abbot a gravity beer was in great condition but at 300p a pint it should have been.
There is no doubt this is a great pub but food/drink are expensive and in the current financial climate they will struggle to survive against cheaper competition.
27 Jan 2009 14:41
I agree I know some of my friends who use the Alma and the Panton Arms on a regular basis its a shame its now gone.
20 Jan 2009 10:37
Ever watch the film One flew over the cuckoo's nest it has some wierd customers including one guy called Garfield whose real name is Kevin.
20 Jan 2009 06:13
Sad to hear the Alma closed before Xmas another Cambridge pub closed for good.
18 Jan 2009 10:09
I'm sorry to hear that I always enjoyed talking to him over a pint.
12 Jan 2009 17:39
Special offer GK IPA @99p a pint thats cheap if you like that sort of beer.
3 Jan 2009 14:02
Ordinary GK pub serves Abbot and IPA prices above average nothing to get excited about I prefer the Wetherspoons in Newmarket which sells IPA @100p cheaper .
3 Jan 2009 14:00
Beers on last week Abbot,Pedigree and Bombardier I guess its the same beers every time I fly.!
19 Dec 2008 21:11
Excellent food and big portions and the in house beer was also great.A busy pub in December I bet its busy in the Summer with the tourists.
I like The Forresters in Brockenhurst but the pub is just as great.
15 Dec 2008 20:59
The last time I was here was last summer when I sat outside with the dog in the large garden the beer is GK which speaks for itself.
I generally use the Blue Ball down the road where the beer is better kept and the locals are more friendly.
12 Dec 2008 20:31
GK pub but actually its not bad and they do aerly breakfasts.
7 Dec 2008 11:45
I may have seen you last week bil when I was there with my friend for a pint of Bass and they sell London Pride now both keg of course but better than San Miguel which I hate.
The Xmas decorations are already up and the fairy lights are a yearly fixture.
Its weird drinking outside in November but thats Gibraltar for you.
Never tried the food but its always packed with people eating.
Let me know if you want to met up sometime for a pint of Bass...I also go to the Aragon nearby which must be the smallest bar ever its off Main street.
6 Dec 2008 19:57
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
I'm not surprised the pub is up for sale after reading the last three comments.
3 Dec 2008 12:25
I particulary like the open wood burning fire in the Winter gives the place a real warm feel to it.. beers average but dont be put off because its a friendly place full of 15c character.
30 Nov 2008 18:16
The Thatchers Arms, Great Warley
Beers on at the moment include Hope &Glory (the local Brentwood Brewery) ..Abbot and Courage Best. all at 275p.
30 Nov 2008 13:29
Full of chavs at night time dont expect a great experience too much loud music and Essex girls.
28 Nov 2008 18:26
Went in yesterday afternoon and the place was empty and no papers available any more.
28 Nov 2008 18:21
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Lol.
For 3 years in a row CCC have awarded this restaurant 1 star out of a possible 5 and describe the hygeine/attitude of management as poor....in fact they come in the bottom 10% on their web-site.
I would not book my Xmas dinner here I would go to the Red Lion next door at least the toilets are clean and paper towels are provided unlike the Greenman.
22 Nov 2008 21:53
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Oh dear the pub is going down in estimation the Scottish landlord is shouting at his staff in front of his customers shame on you Barry and the toilets are filthy time for another hygeine inspection I think.
22 Nov 2008 16:34
Refused entry on account of my dog what a complete dive this pub is I wont go there again.
22 Nov 2008 16:01
Unique pub as you need a boat to get there in the Winter when its impassable by road which is no more than a dirt track and its not well sign posted.
Not changed in 30 years still a great little pub with some good real ales brewed nearby.
18 Nov 2008 22:31
Run by former actress Becky Newman this pub features in Saturday Telegraph Pint to Pint column.
2 Nov 2008 18:51
Excellent news.
I know there have been problems over the last 6 months but to see the pub closed was still a shock and I for one will be glad to see the White Horse back on its feet again .
This pub is the best one in Hertford for quality of beer and great food.
And it featured in BITE's top 40 pubs for many years so lets hope it can regain its former postion.
Good Luck.
19 Oct 2008 14:11
Use this "pub" when flying from Stansted Airport and its great to drink real ale instead of the usual bland keg beers that UK airports sell.
Abbot/Pedigree and 2 others but I stick with Abbot and its not bad in taste and its cheap as all UK airports are complete rip-offs when it comes to food and drink.
All the staff are Polish I think but service is quick and efficient.
I never thought I would praise a Wetherspoons but this one is above average.
18 Oct 2008 19:10
Situated between the river and the sea this is a great Adnams pub with plenty of character I prefer it to any pub in Southwold never tried the food.
Never been in the summer but for me its a great winter pub after walking the dog.
13 Oct 2008 12:10
Rumours in Hertford that the White Horse is now closed... could someone please confirm..
5 Oct 2008 11:59
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Cambridge County council Food authority have awarded this pub just one star out of a possible 5 they said
Confidence in the Management.. little.
Standard of Safety & Hygiene... poor.
The Red Lion next door was awarded 3 stars and their hygeine records are described as "good ".
All the other pubs in Grantchester were awarded at least 3 stars and the Rupert Brooke was awarded 4..
I would prefer to visit a "drinking hole " like the Red Lion that to enter this place.
5 Oct 2008 09:32
Oh dear popular with the young and nothing in the way of real ales.
26 Sep 2008 20:44
GK pub almost next door to the Golden Lion.
I know which pub I prefer.
26 Sep 2008 20:42
Last week went in for a beer and to my surprise they informed me there was no Fullers beers or guest ales available... what a joke this pub has become in Hertford..
25 Sep 2008 14:13
Similar tourist pub like the Anchor next door I went there and a group of French tourists were asking about the price of Kronenberg and when told they walked out..it is expensive but better range of beers than th Anchor including hobgoblin.
24 Sep 2008 19:51
Now a GK pub for the last 2 years but an excellent place to drink in Dunmow.
23 Sep 2008 13:58
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Only one person has made a bad review what about the others..?
Dont you like people telling the truth.
22 Sep 2008 22:13
This pub featured in Porterhouse Blue staring David Jason although it was renamed the Leg of Beef..
Apart from that just another bland Greenking watsit.
21 Sep 2008 12:19
Worth visiting for the beer festival in May held in the back garden when it gets very busy.
20 Sep 2008 15:55
16 th Century the French Revolution fully exposed beams and suits of Armour the Sir Henry Gurnett has them all..the beer is great there is no problem here but overall a rather moribund atmosphere..
Never tried the food so no comment there the staff though seem uninterested in serving customers and more interested in speaking to each other..
Could be a better place to enjoy a pint.
14 Sep 2008 13:09
I'm gladyou enjoyed the crab sandwiches blue I must have gone at the wrong time of the year..
And the same goes for the beer..
I will try my luck again sometime when I'm in Cromer.
11 Sep 2008 14:34
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
The last two comments are a complete joke as familyguy and Kangarook are the landlord/partner of the pub..
The best food in England..lol..
If you decide to visit the pub after reading the rather mixed reviews you know what to expect from him..
Just ask for Barry McKenzie ..
I never called him rude that was another reviewer.
Have fun.
10 Sep 2008 22:11
They dont sell Bass...
Its the oldest pub in town just off Main st .
7 Sep 2008 11:25
Had fish & chips meal here with a pint not bad and watched the tourists walk past.
6 Sep 2008 19:46
First pub as you enter Gib serves Bass beer @300p a pint so its no different to UK prices .
A couple of doors away is the Allswell which also serves Bass and London Pride also at 300p a pint.
6 Sep 2008 19:42
Situated opposite the Convent (the Governors residence) you can watch the changing of the guard or have your photo taken next to th old cannons.
I go there because they Bass beer @240p its 50p cheaper than the stuff they sell at Casements square which is a tourist trap..
6 Sep 2008 19:37
Went there for Xmas dinner last year the food was rubbish and so was the beer.
We wont be going there again.
1 Sep 2008 21:29
Poor excuse for a pub built near a roundabout.. keep driving.
1 Sep 2008 19:23
Worth stopping for a pint on the way to Dunmow...serves fish.
1 Sep 2008 19:19
A tradional old coaching Inn dominates the High Street but no real ales they do serve Guiness but nothing else..
Its a shame as I have enjoyed a meal in there before but the lack of real ales is a big disappointment.
1 Sep 2008 11:16
Better atmosphere than the Regal in Cambridge which is too bland at least the locals here are friendly and the beers are better in quality ..
One of the best pubs in town I would agree..
1 Sep 2008 11:13
There is nothing Smug about it its just a small pub with a tatty sign outside.
1 Sep 2008 11:06
The Salisbury Arms Hotel, Hertford
Dingy and dark interior needs brightening up serving McMullens beer and coffee for the well to do ladies of town...reminds me of a trainn station waiting room.
30 Aug 2008 15:12
Bland chav pub situated in the market area.. poor selection of ale.
30 Aug 2008 15:07
10 years ago was the best pub for miles and now look at it...empty.
26 Aug 2008 21:38
Thanks to Michell and Derek for making myself and dog so welcome over the Summer months and the locals are most welcoming too.
A great real ale pub with tradional stone flagstones and quality real ales.
26 Aug 2008 14:36
The Old English Gentleman, Harston
Went past the other week and it seems to be closed.
25 Aug 2008 20:50
The locals in the village use the BlueBall which is a great real ale pub with live music every Thursday.
Sadly even though the barstaff dont drink here but th Landlord is decent bloke.
25 Aug 2008 20:46
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Apparently the Landlord has barred most of his regulars for some reason so now its just a student pub so typical of Cambridge.
Most of the food is supplied by Brakes frozen foods so I doubt it is homemade.
25 Aug 2008 20:40
The Thatchers Arms, Great Warley
Sad to see the Charles Napier now closed in the High Street still the Thatchers is still good.
6 Aug 2008 10:49
Nearly 300p for a pint of ordinary bitter.
Soulless sort of place.
6 Aug 2008 10:48
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
I agree with Furze the food is overpriced by 100% and even then its not that good its like an upmarket McDonalds.
Another problem is the long wait for a pint which can be 5 mins and also staff turnover must be a problem as you never see the same barperson more than a few times.
The Landlord is not bad but a bit aloof.
5 Aug 2008 09:21
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
Met up with a friend last Sunday who had travelled from London.. the place is handy for the Rail Station.
Tiger as good as usual but 280p a pint a bit expensive..my friend had the Oyster stout which seemed to be popular that lunchtime..
Food is back on Sunday Lunchtimes although we didnt eat.
The guy behind the bar with the scruffy hair and tie die shirt knows his beers and lets you try before you buy..
Certainly improved since the last time I was there but again the tiolets..!
5 Aug 2008 09:14
Went in last week and the place had 2 customers at 9 in the evening.
Across the road the Leather Bottle and Prince Albert were full.
31 Jul 2008 09:03
Oh dear the pint of Brentwood best bitter I had last night was warm it tasted ok and the Foresters Special at 5.2% was unavailable.
Pub situated in the High street its very small and easy to miss.
31 Jul 2008 09:01
The Sandmartin, Chafford Hundred
The manager seems to have a sense of humor bypass he never smiles or speaks.
No atmosphere.
30 Jul 2008 12:21
The Woodlands Edge, South Ockendon
Empty most lunchtimes and evenings now since the smoking ban was introduced and the manager has barred most of his regulars and dogs are barred too.
Still would make a nice block of flats when it closes.
30 Jul 2008 12:18
Open again with a new fresh look and now doing barbeques in the garden at weekends.
Worth a try.
30 Jul 2008 11:39
Stopped serving real ale ie London Pride , Broadside and Bass just lagers now used to be great as a pub now sadly another just a run of the mill eaterie.
avoid.
30 Jul 2008 11:35
Dropped in for a pint last week nice building in small village and local Brentwood beer served which is a plus.
30 Jul 2008 09:08
I totally agree with edchambers 330p is a shocking price for a pint of Broadside.I also went to the Regal in Cambridge and had a pint of Augustinians from the Nethergate brewery down the road at Clare in Suffolk and paid 205p for a decent beer.Right it is the biggest JDW pub in England and they sell cheap beer but I am agast at the atitude of these people who seem to think they can charge 330p for a pint of beer .One to avoid .
28 Jul 2008 10:44
Noisy pub with bouncers at the door at weekends and beer not worth talking about.
Avoid.
28 Jul 2008 09:34
Paid a visit the last week and beer iswell kept with a choice of 6 on plus one cider.
Food is cheap and the menu varied.
A great mix of locals, visitors and motor cyclists and walkers.
My dog loves the pork scatchings.
28 Jul 2008 09:08
I understand the pub is up for sale due to the bad health of Johns wife and that Johns son is not interested in taking over which is a shame.
I would like to pay tribute to both John and Val for making the Swan a great real ale venue over the last 10 years.
I hope that who ever takes over keeps it the same as it is now for being one of the best real ale pubs in Essex.
27 Jul 2008 11:10
Lovely village location but beer uninspiring basically just 2 real ales including Ringwood bitter.Food expensive mainly a tourist pub but you need a mortgage to afford to eat here.
Worth a visit to Arthur Colan Doyles grave in the Church just round the bend.
22 Jul 2008 10:18
Went in for a pint and had a pint of Ringwood bitter no 49'er on show.
No dogs allowed so sat outside watching the traffic go by.. bit boring.
17 Jul 2008 11:33
Still boarded up and a years amount of logs in the carpark if any one is interested.
17 Jul 2008 11:22
Went in again last week after a 2 week boycott for a lunch..
It was 5 mins to 2 in the afternoon and I ordered a meal on the blackboard only to be told they stopped serving at 2.
I ordered a drink and sat down and soon afterwards a group of 4 walked in and asked for a meal to be told that they stopped serving at 2 ; they walked out in disgust.
The place is empty at lunchtimes and yet thet turn away trade they dont deserve peoples business.
10 Jul 2008 10:53
Paid a visit last night beer great and sat outside in the alleyway with dog.
6 Jul 2008 11:21
I paid a visit the other week and was impressed with the choice of ales and the staffs friendliness.Sat in the garden with my dog which you cant do at the Let and live.
20 Jun 2008 10:00
The Old Cross Tavern, Hertford
Great little pub with a good selection of beers including London Pride and a few porter type beers.Staff very helpful and the customers are chatty too .I bring my dog in and have a relaxed time talking to other dog owners.
A shining example of what a proper pub should be in every respect.
18 Jun 2008 13:25
Went in last week after a 3 month absence and although I do not agree with comments by padster the pub is definetely going downhill whether its the new Wetherspoons opened in Hertford recently but the landlord Nigel the one with the ponytail was shouting at the young student barman over a food order. The pub was almost empty this being lunchtime but one thing you dont do is abuse your staff in front of customers.
Also the usual London Pride was not up to usual standard and they had no ESB on tap.
I have now decided to visit the Cross Keys where the beer is excellent and the staff and customers more happy.
17 Jun 2008 11:42
Made a first visit last week and ordered a pint of Old Hooky after waiting 10 mins and tasted it it was like vinegar so I waited another 5 mins before they changed it.
Feels like a moterway service station with all the glass.
17 Jun 2008 11:31
Waited 5 mins to be served when the pub was empty and was charged 330p for a pint of broadside which is overpriced compared to other local pubs.
17 Jun 2008 11:07
Went there last weekend beer pricey 320p for Broadside..can wait a while before getting served due to staff not bothered to get off thier backsides.
16 Jun 2008 14:52
Just returned from the beer festival which ended on Suday..spent Friday and Saturday in my tent in the back garden.
Well done to John and Val and their son for making myself and my dog so welcome.
Noticed the cask marque upside down I wonder why.
16 Jun 2008 10:49
Visited for the first time on Sunday and what a wonderful place to visit.
Tried one of their Farmers beers at 5% and what a great beer one of the best I've ever tried' they also had Pucks Folly and Nelsons Blood but I stuck with the high gravity Farmers.
Great oak beams in the Tap room with stuffed animals in the rafters.. a unique place..
I will return.
16 Jun 2008 10:41
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
Went in for a pint Sunday up to the usual standard.
Food was a let down firstly they said they had no jacket potatoes so we said chips instead and then 5 mins later they said they had no chips.. but even so waiting 30 mins for a pork pie salad is just not on.
Again the gents are a discrace with mould on the walls...
Are the management reading these comments..?
27 May 2008 14:40
First visit Saturday good selection of ales and sampled some others.Bit pricey for beer at 300p a pint..carpets could do with a clean .. went on the computer for a while.
Bit soulless at lunch time and the barman is he Polish I could not decipher his accent.
Not too impressed I think the Cambridge Blue is better.Still the computer was free which is worth it if you have just the one drink.

The Burton Bridge Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent
This excellent pub was reviewed in last Saturdays pint to pint section of the Telegraph.

The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
I should add post script that the gents is a let down time for a clean and paint theres mould in the cubicle.
31 Mar 2008 11:34
In competition with the Regal across the road which is Wetherspoons largest venue but if you want a quiet drink away from the noisy tourists here is the place .
Dog is allowed in the beer garden but not in the pub .
Dont expect too much in the way of real ales as its a normal GK outlet nothing fancy.
29 Mar 2008 09:12
If your wanting a decent pint of ale dont bother here it hopeless go to Rainham village instead.
25 Mar 2008 13:07
The Huntsman and Hounds, Althorne
What can be better than camping in the very large field behind the pub during the summer.
24 Mar 2008 16:12
This used to be Sid James watering hole now look at it.. its a pub without a decent beer or atmosphere ..go elsewhere.
24 Mar 2008 11:51
Probably the best real ale pub in the whole of Essex situated in the middle of a forest you need a car to get there.
Its worth visiting if your within a 20 mile radius its thats great.
21 Mar 2008 11:47
Went there for a pint and had Hogoblin which was warm and tasteless.I ordered a crab sanwich this being crabby Cromer and the assistant manageress behind the bar said we havent had crab for weeks this despite just outside there is a shed selling them on the beach.I had smoked haddock which was rubbery and tasteless.
Why do British people put up with such bad service.
17 Mar 2008 14:53
The George and Dragon, Long Melford
I asked for 2 pints and the barman said to me have you eaten yet and I said yes and he gave me a black look and walked away..and that is what I did after drinking my ale.
13 Mar 2008 20:24
Bargirl came up to me and said are you finished and I said no I've only just arrived I should have realised they shut in the afternoons..I wont be going back.
13 Mar 2008 20:21
Worth a visit if only for the Beer festival held in June they have a great range of beers cider and perry and Oscar Wilde. They allowed my dog in but the place is so small we sat in the front garden. One of the best real ale pubs in Essex alongside The Viper in Ingatestone.Restaurant to the left as you go in .
9 Mar 2008 20:35
Best pub in Barking and the Youngs beer is excellent place is clean and tidy and food is good forget the rest.
7 Mar 2008 19:41
What do you expect its a McMullens pub and the beer is tasteless and expensive.. sit outside by the river in the Summer but dont expect a good atmosphere inside.
7 Mar 2008 14:53
The only reason I used this pub was because Syd Barrett lived round the corner and had his own chair apparently.A pint of Abbot is 240p and tastes delicious(not).
6 Mar 2008 18:52
Its a wetherspoons but the abbot was warm and I waited 5 mins for service because the staff were busy talking to each other.
I rate it 4.
6 Mar 2008 14:03
Not a bad pub but when you see notices around the pub saying drug dealers will be banned for life what impression does that give you.
Beer range is limited and not cheap and food expensive.Nice gardens at the back with rabbits in a cage.
5 Mar 2008 15:09
Used to be a Ridleys pub but now a Greene King one.Without transport its difficult to get to.
4 Mar 2008 23:15
Very long and narrow pub in the centre of Cambridge selling GK beers a bit boring try the Pickerel across the road by the bridge.
3 Mar 2008 11:39
Waste of a great pub no real ales to mention and horrid interior and empty compared to the pub next door.. avoid.
3 Mar 2008 11:34
Its a Greene King pub full of tourists in the middle of Cambridge worth stopping for a pint sitting in the courtyard but no big deal.Still its much better than the pub next door now that is bad.
3 Mar 2008 11:15
Food expensive and drinks too and a rather drab pub there are better in Brentwood and the outside is a horrid green colour.
3 Mar 2008 10:33
Populare with the IN crowd over the weekend but expensive drinks best to avoid.
3 Mar 2008 10:28
Now renamed the Woodpecker but thats no reason to go there as there are better pubs around the Brentwood area.
2 Mar 2008 15:18
Used to be a great pub serving Bass now a reatauarant serving meals on wheels..a shame.
1 Mar 2008 14:25
Very old and historic pub worth paying a visit now the landlady who was there for the previous couple of year has gone since she was sitting at the bar usually drunk and abusive.Good real ales some I have never heard of before. The toilets which are down the end of a narrow corridor could do with a refit.Present staff are friendly and its got a great atmosphere now the dragon has gone. One of the best pubs in the High street.
28 Feb 2008 15:57
A Neame pub serving master brew and spitfire away from the high street its got photos of all the actors like John Inman and comedians like Jim Davidson on the walls who have played at the local theatre.Beer garden is great at the back if you want to avoid the lovies.
28 Feb 2008 15:50
The King Edward VII, Stratford
A quick visit Saturday lunchtime and quite impressed with the place it has wooden floorboards and an Victorian interior and is posh for Stratford.Tried Nethergate beer from Clare in Suffolk and was good but pricey.More a fancy food place I guess but it has its attractions. The toilets were worth a visit alone.
28 Feb 2008 15:31
Above average Wetherspoons pub with a good choice of real ales kept in good condition could be a tourist attraction when the builders leave.
28 Feb 2008 15:17
Greene King pub selling GK beers..overlooking the green its worth sitting outside.
27 Feb 2008 19:43
The Square and Compasses, Great Shelford
Beer is Greene King so thats a minus for a start and I went in with my dog and was told to leave.. good thing too.
25 Feb 2008 21:04
More of a hotel and restaurant than a pub with a limited range of real ales and the beer and food is pricey. Photos of local airfields from the War adorn the walls which are interesting to look at.Nice beer garden on the side.Staff a bit slow serving when I've been in there.
25 Feb 2008 19:38
The Snakecatcher, Brockenhurst
The girl behing the bar served me a pint that had seen better days it was warm and tepid and horrible in taste.Garden allows your dog but I would not go back in a hurry.
25 Feb 2008 19:31
The Foresters Arms, Brockenhurst
Been here a few times and the Aussies who run it do a great job even though they support Fulham.Ringwood 49er is the best beer for me at 5% much better than the ordinary bitter made by Ringwoods.Trouble is they charge London prices but the food is good and not overly priced and my dog is allowed in to which is great.I like the place .
25 Feb 2008 19:27
Worst pub in Upminster and now closed for refurbishment ..It would be best if it was pulled down and flats built.Dreadful place with no real ales and no atmosphere.I give it 2 ratings.
24 Feb 2008 23:39
Best pub in Thaxted serving Adnams Broadside and 3 other ales and not too expensive and locals fairly friendly I believe they have live music twice a week.Has plenty of olde charm.
24 Feb 2008 23:33
Tried the micro beer but it was undrinkable maybe it was my fault I dont know.. other beers were much better tasting although nothing special.Mostly a restaurant serving fresh fish and customers sitting in the bar gives little room for us drinkers.I usually sit in the garden outside.
24 Feb 2008 23:20
An old coaching inn in the High street has a good range of beers Abbot is a regular a place to go for a pint before the racing .Beer kept in good condition and food ok busy on race day especially Saturdays. One of the better Wetherspoons.
24 Feb 2008 23:14
The Rupert Brooke, Grantchester
In the heart of Grantchester this is more of a restaurant than a pub but to their credit they do serve Hardys Sussex bitter which is quite rare some GK beers which are not worth talking about.I have spoken to the Landlord and he said he will have more decent ales in the future.A place for eating I am told but I cant vouch for the quality on that one.Garden at the back and large carpark.
Daily papers available to read whilst having a drink.Staff friendly and place not overtly packed.
24 Feb 2008 15:49
Lovely thatched 18th century building just off the Meadows but its let down by the minimalist interior which undermines its charecter.Beer is Old Speckled Hen and Greene King IPA and is reaonably priced compared to the pub next door as well as the food..large garden at the back where I usually sit as the inside is depressing.
Staff friendly though but no locals mainly tourists.
23 Feb 2008 15:36
An Adnams pub serving a full range of Adnams ales but the staff mostly students wish they were somewher else which is a shame and are concerned with discussing their active social life outside the pub.
Beers are great and food too but the staff are a letdown. There is a garden outside in the Summer its quite packed.
23 Feb 2008 15:20
The best pub in Blackmore and there are 3 of them within 100 yards of each other.Divided into a restaurant on the right and a small public bar to the left.Good selection of real ales include Adnams bitter and Broadside also a couple of guest ales.Sunday lunchtime theres a free roast potatoes and sausages for the regulars which is populare.Staff are very friendly and my dog is allowed which is great.Apparently the building has 2 ghosts but I never met them.
22 Feb 2008 20:42
Situated off the Ongar road this is pub with a large carpark and gardens.Staff are friendly enough and the Norfolk Wherry and Pride are great but pricey.
22 Feb 2008 20:36
A tourist pub with no regulars and you get harassed as you walk in by students trying to interest you in hiring a punt.Pink Floyd met up here apparently and theres a board on the wall on the left as you enter announcing this.. I ended up taking a photo for a couple who had come from Peru just to stand in front of it.
Not a real ale pub but they do Abbot and another beer and you sit back on the leather sofa and read the Times or Telegraph and look intelligent.
It alright for a pint but thats all.
22 Feb 2008 20:30
A great liitle pub and its a Fullers serving London Pride Discovery and ESB as well as 2 guest beers at any one time.Food is excellent and their curries are recommended.
Must have been there 50 times by now but unless you like Rugby and I dont you wont get a conversation with the locals which is a shame.
None the less the staff are friendly enough and you can sample the beer before buying. And now its a non smoking pub you an actually enjoy the taste of your ale.
I would not go any where else in Hertford.
22 Feb 2008 20:07
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
I totally agree with greybeard this pub has so much potential but the staff seem inexperienced and you can wait 5 minutes to get served when there are only a few people in the pub. They serve Adnams Broadside but its at least 50p overpriced compared to the other pubs in Grantchester. Also sell other guest ales such as Black Sheep and Spitfire. It is situated opposite the village green and I usually sit outside watching the world go by.
Basically its a restaurant and not a pub but with burger and chips costing 10 a meal its very expensive for restaurant selling pub food.
Overall a place I go for a drink but its trying to be something its not.
22 Feb 2008 13:43
More a Thai restaurant than a pub these days but they do have a range of 4 real ales including Adnams Broadside and Tanglefoot. Lunch time pint is ok but would not go there at night as it can be a bit wierd.Near th Cambridge ground so its quite handy.
22 Feb 2008 13:29
Situated just off the centre of Cambridge this former Cinema is one of the biggest Wetherspoons in the UK.
A decent range of real ales although not kept in good condition but a pint is 100p cheaper than other locals.Food is cheap but problem is you have to wait in a queue while people order a coffee or a meal.
Compared to other Wetherspoons this one is at the top but they need to hav more staff as it does get busy and waiting 10 mins for a pint is just not on.
22 Feb 2008 13:23
The Woodlands Edge, South Ockendon
A Greene King pub that sells one real ale ie Abbot ale if its on that is.I have been there many times but the beer is not well kept and most people drink cheap lagers.
It was better when it was a Wetherspoons.
20 Feb 2008 22:55
The Live and Let Live, Cambridge
A proper real ale pub with a changing selection of beers and ciders.Has twice yearly beer festivals worth attending.Tiger ale is a regular and Umbel too all beers kept in top condition.Limited food for sale but thats not a problem as Cambridge has many food outlets.Guy behind the bar is very friendly and lets you taste a sampler of beer before buying.
20 Feb 2008 22:43
The Thatchers Arms, Great Warley
Situated in the conservation area of Warley its a old pub which has not changed in the 30 years I have been drinking there. Now serving Adnams Broadside and a local beer brewed by the Brentwood Brewing company which is called Clockwork Orange at 8%.!
Food is reasonably priced and so is the beer.
20 Feb 2008 22:05
The Blue Ball Inn, Grantchester
With lovely views across the Meadows this is a mid terraced pub in Grantchester where the locals meet for a pint of real ale (Adnams bitter and a guest ale)..dont ask for lager because they dont sell it but they do sell a local cider which is strong. Not a food pub but they have live music every other Thursday and old fashioned pub games.
20 Feb 2008 21:56
The Cross Keys, Chelsea
Favoured by the Royalty this is Prince Harry's favourite Pub.
