This has been massively refurbished and is more of a restaurant than a pub these days, with the focus on burgers. They've finally made something decent out of the patio area overlooking the river, while there is an absolutely massive snooker-table sized ... er ... table inside for those group celebrations. Much as I like traditional boozers, I applaud this conversion. The food is fine and reasonably priced (remember to take the cocktail stick out of the burger before tucking in). The vanilla milk shakes are excellent, and I usually have one in preference to the beer. Air conditioning is frighteningly good, which makes the pub a good choice on a hot summer's day; after frying yourself on the patio you can come inside and cool down. Has a good range of McMullen ales on tap: four if memory serves. Then again, the brewery is right next door, so it should have plenty of variety. Fiendishgames - 6 Dec 2013 15:29 |
I thought this place to be a little bland and apart from the nice paved beer garden out the back that runs alongside the river I thought that this was another unremarkable McMullens pub in Hertford. The barman was very friendly and the usual Mcmullen ale range was available along with a standard draught selection. There is a plasma screen in the bar area and another out the back, but these were showing an under 17s football game so they were muted and some inoffensive background music was playing. I would walk past if passing again as there are better pubs a stones throw away. Strongers - 28 Oct 2009 10:06 |
One of the better MacMullen pubs in Hertford. The Cask Ale was fine for a session and the Country bitter was also well kept. The pub is clean and tidy with a chatty barman and a friendly atmosphere. However mid week the pub is quiet although the karaoke on Fridays brings in more custom. The proximity to the Six Templars probably accounts for the loss of trade, but if your looking for a quiet beer or two ,the Woolpack meets the bill. Decent pub, McMullens nearest pub to their HQ so always looked after. Not ye olde world, anymore since the refurb and more expensive too. Nice beer garden overlooking the River Lea. Beer is ok too. thirtyhertford - 4 May 2008 18:21 |
What do you expect its a McMullens pub and the beer is tasteless and expensive.. sit outside by the river in the Summer but dont expect a good atmosphere inside. hogshead - 7 Mar 2008 14:53 |
