The New Hop Pole, West Bromwich
This is a nice enough boozer 10 mins walk from the centre, nice traditional feel to it. Bit of a locals pub though so don`t expect a hearty welcome. Has some decent real ales though getting one needs a bit of mind reading as to what the actual price is..barmaids.hand outstretched for cash "er..how much is it please?" funny

The Bloxwich Showman, Bloxwich
Short bus ride from Walsall on regular service so not a hassle to get there, yeah very pleasant JDW, worth a look.
19 May 2017 11:20
The Billiard Hall, West Bromwich
Yeah it is very convenient next to the bus station and Metro, and they run very regular services so not a grind to get there. Decor is still the same but the ale prices can be superb (Saturday and all ales £1.99!) and they`ve got bona fida footie games on...bonus indeed!
8 May 2017 15:51
Quick visit on the way to the Station and I liked it. Everards Ales which was well kept, laid back atmosphere, usual trad pub fittings, friendly staff and sport on TV. I`d probably use this boozer often if I lived there...praise enough!

The Roebuck Inn, Burton-Upon-Trent
Was speaking to the landlord of this boozer in the Devonshire Arms (lovely boozer) what a nice bloke. As the Roebuck is right by the station thought I`d pop in. It`s a community type pub, juke box, sport, real ales. Unspectacular but worth popping into for a couple before getting the rattler.
13 Jan 2017 08:38
Sterile, featureless, overpriced and worst of all boring. If this is the future for pubs count me out, more atmosphere on the moon - what a shame.
13 Jan 2017 08:27
The name and the fancy exterior could give the impression that it`s some sort of Italian coffee house but no it`s a nice little boozer with a range of ales - well worth a visit.
28 Oct 2016 11:29
The Giffard Arms, Wolverhampton
METALLLLLL!!!!!! (sos got carried away there!) Yes it`s a rock pub, as said, lovely outside and all black and blood red inside. Another essential pub to visit when in town....HORNS UP!!!!
28 Oct 2016 11:25
Dog and Doublet, Wolverhampton
As the other reviewers have said this pub is a good `un, essential visit when in Wolvo.
28 Oct 2016 11:20
The Wheatsheaf, Stourport on Severn
It`s not really a pub, more of a venue. Looks like a warehouse from the outside, all exposed brickwork and high ceilings inside. Sells brand beers at the going rate, place for the young `uns.
24 Oct 2016 08:21
I understand what the other reviewers are saying but I actually quite like this boozer. It`s got a bit of a rock thing goin` on under the surface ( Billy Joel does AC/DC on youtube check it out!) The beers are ok, found the punters untroubling and it`s right by the metro terminus...perfect!
13 Oct 2016 13:24
Not much to look at from the outside, the inside is a bit of a furniture mash up. It`s a comfy locals pub with one real ale on and a selection of brand beers. Apparently the food is very nice. Has the opening hours from way back in the 70`s though so don`t expect any service after 2.30 of an afternoon!
5 Oct 2016 16:14
The One Elm, Stratford Upon Avon
Modernist decor bar but bit of a mish mash in my view. Couple of ales on, pleasant enough place for one or two.
12 Sep 2016 10:33
The The Gate Inn, Sutton Coldfield
An attractive pub from the outside and a well done out interior. Couple of ales on which was in good nick. Music orientated, would probably be my boozer of choice if I lived here but I`m not posh enough! Well worth a visit or three.
7 Sep 2016 12:33
Large chain pub in the middle.....oh just read Oddball`s review of 2008
7 Sep 2016 12:14
It`s a trad looking boozer on the main drag. A pub with hardly any seating or tables! Had to sit by a couple of middle aged blokes who was on an afternoon bender I presume goin` by the language at full blast! Limited beer range but cider was fine enough. Put some furniture in and have a word with the regulars and this could be a decent pub.
10 Aug 2016 12:26
10 minute walk from Walsall centre. Seems nothing has changed about this pub since the last review in 2013. Inviting exterior and sadly sparce interior. Only a pit stop for me however so can`t judge what it`s like of a night time. Cider very cheap but very limited choice otherwise.
10 Aug 2016 12:17
Although the previous reviews are from some time back nothing drastic seems to have changed in this trad little boozer. Bit quiet for a sunny Sunday afternoon though especially as it`s got such a prime location. Not much beer choice but yes the Banks`s is pretty decent.
8 Aug 2016 09:39
The Crown Liquor Saloon, Belfast
Worth a visit to admire the interior and have a quick Guinness, way too busy for more than that though. Nip across the road after to Brennans bar where they do some quality grub and a variety of beers.
3 Aug 2016 08:56
Interesting little boozer, well kept with good selection of beers. Barman friendly enough. Overtly political paintings adorn the place which did give me some sense of unease though - Brits in a strange city e.t.c, worth a visit however.
3 Aug 2016 08:50
Decent Travelodge right next door, breakfast is served! - and quality price too though large brekkie beat me! goodly few ales on, regulars no bother and 2 minutes back to slumberland. recommended place to be based on a budget.
3 Aug 2016 08:34
Large double tiered JDW, nothing different from the UK. Busy on a Saturday night, nice atmosphere, friendly staff - drop in pub.
3 Aug 2016 08:28
For trad pub lovers this is a must visit boozer. Nice atmosphere, friendly owners and regulars, plenty of quaint character, ales tasted perfectly good on my visit. If I lived here I`m sure it would be a regular haunt...probably has a ghost aswell!
4 Jul 2016 12:57
It`s branded as a Ska bar these days, specializing in punk, reggae and ska. It`s a nice little boozer with a real ale on (ok it`s a Marsdens but tastes alright) has live bands, sport TV e.t.c..only downside was having my ears assaulted by several Bad Manners songs!!!
4 Jul 2016 12:51
Actually their pub grub is a bit of a bargain and worth a visit just for the pie and chips! I was a bit stingy before, I quite like the place really!
4 Jul 2016 12:43
Interesting looking pub with some nice traditional internal features. Nice water feature and sitting area on the way to the toilets. Had the Stowford which was a bit pricey. Piped rock music seems a bit out of character with the place though. Worth a peek.
1 Jun 2016 14:43
What a shocker, this JDW has closed! Sign outside thanking everyone for their custom...gobsmacked! Hope this isn`t indicative that the brands bubble has burst?
1 Jun 2016 14:30
A really attractive pub, you`d never think you was 10 mins walk from the Black Horse on the main drag. Still obviously a `are you locals?` establishment, real ale on, pleasant staff...but....more Hi-Viz than a tarmac gang on the M1 and just as loud, don`t know about the fluorescent PPE required - ear defenders would`ve been more useful! Try the quiet room on the right when you go in.
29 Apr 2016 13:42
Old style boozer with a certain charm to it. Music themed compact bar selling usual brand stuff and Holden ales which are very nice. Only drawback is goin` to the loo, like something from the 50`s...brick outhouse down t`alley..must be murder during the Winter months! Worth a visit though.
25 Apr 2016 11:50
The Goose At The OVT, Selly Oak
Has some reasonable beers on, Adnams, Punk IPA etc.. Wouldn`t call it a real student pub though...they`re all in the S`oak. smattering of youngsters but mainly old blokes and shifty types. Staff too laid back and regular friendly..no good for a stranger in town!
13 Apr 2016 14:34
It ain`t too bad but some of the louder Rugby residents seem to frequent it. Everywhere you turn your confronted with mirrors, after a few bevvies the last thing I want to do is see the reflection of my fizzog! Not a pub for a session.
22 Feb 2016 11:23
Just out of the centre, it really is a special little boozer that deserves more custom. Plenty of nice ales, friendly, search out and visit.
22 Feb 2016 11:16
Large open plan wooden floored alehouse. Caters for the Rugby sport fans, busy on a Saturday afternoon, friendly enough, plenty of beers on, must visit.
22 Feb 2016 11:13
Standard brand beers, standard service, standard décor, I expect more from a pub in this prime location..could do better.
22 Feb 2016 11:09
Wins hands down price wise with the other pubs by the square..yes I know it`s a JDW but the difference between a £7 nosh and a £13 nosh make`s all the difference. Otherwise standard JDW.
22 Feb 2016 11:00
It`s not too far from the station and well worth a visit. Had about 5 real ales on although I was on the cider. It`s a nicely done out olde worlde type boozer, food looked ok, comfy little sitting areas..a good `un!
22 Feb 2016 10:55
It`s the closest pub to the train station. 1 real ale on which was ok. As for the friendly local bit not sure where that comes from...middle aged blokes who look at you like your from another planet (the 2 heads and four arms probably gave it away!) so only worth a visit if your desperate for a quick half and the loo.
22 Feb 2016 10:48
The exterior is of the classic trad pub variety. Inside is nice enough, seems popular in a trendy sort of way. It appears that it`s run along the craft lager and beers line with the expected prices, if you`ve got deep pockets yes, if your a bit thriftier no.
22 Feb 2016 10:39
Bog standard JDW in a very pleasant setting, service was fine when I visited, close enough to station.
22 Feb 2016 10:26
The Vat and Fiddle, Nottingham
An interesting boozer plonked in the middle of nothingness and ugly office blocks. It`s a few minutes walk from the train station which is handy and the ales are top quality. Group of birthday girls dropped in by mistake and did stay for one or two ("Doubles only 3 quid!") but did comment that it was "an old man`s pub" - that`ll be me then! Must visit if your on the rattler.
1 Feb 2016 11:02
Bog standard JDW, not too far from train station. Typical pub fare - as a rule JDW always have a couple of decent well kept ales on and this one is no exception. Can only say service was pretty quick, mind you all the footie fans had just departed so that explained it!
25 Jan 2016 08:29
Typical Ember Inns pub, open plan comfort, real ales, food etc., Laid back atmosphere while I was there, not far from no 6 bus, if your spending the afternoon in B&Q, Carpet Right or Pets Are Us it`s worth a stroll to.
18 Jan 2016 11:41
Typical rock orientated boozer, limited beer selection` black décor, plastic skulls and dodgy toilets - Kidderminster's answer to the long missed `Costas` in Brum. essential haunt for the alternative crowd.
12 Jan 2016 14:34
Martinsh spot on. Plenty of ales but service needs looking at - prob dropped in at the wrong time.
11 Jan 2016 10:53
Blue Scrumpy`s just about summed it up, typical JDW - food yes...night out nope.
11 Jan 2016 10:46
Looks like it should be a good pub from the outside, inside it`s quite a large place, traditional wood floors, olde décor and large bar. Couple of real ales on which was in decent nick. regulars seemed friendly enough for a Sunday afternoon. Worth a visit if your in the vicinity.
11 Jan 2016 10:41
Food`s quality, don`t go too late or you won`t get a table!
6 Jan 2016 14:23
It`s ultra rare that I`d give any pub a top score but sometimes it`s justified - get to this place when the special live music is going on and you`d be amazed - awesome!
6 Jan 2016 14:20
The King and Castle, Kidderminster
I can understand the mixed reviews for this place but I think location, real ales, service and friendly locals means it`s a definite thumbs up from this punter!
6 Jan 2016 14:16
The Hen and Chickens, Birmingham
If your after a fantastic nosh from this place make sure you book a table - it`s popularity has soared to the point where if you don`t book...you don`t eat!
9 Dec 2015 10:53
An immense improvement on what was a dinosaur drinking establishment rooted in the 70`s when it was quite acceptable to have a good old ding dong at the end of a pleasant evening of lager quaffing. Thankfully it`s more bog standard now, nothing outstanding but atleast the regulars have grown up or are on her majesties pleasure. Not my brand of boozer but communities need these places - praise the lord!
9 Dec 2015 10:44
Whoa it`s now become Subside...a rock and indie bar open till very late at a price. Hope it`s a success - rock on!
8 Dec 2015 12:09
The Weavers Real Ale House, Kidderminster
A very pleasant pub indeed. Railway station just up the road. Nice ales, nice Cider, nice staff and nice punters...must visit.
16 Nov 2015 11:14
The Tavern in the Town, Tamworth
Called the Tavern Inn these days. Very underwhelming boozer, very basic beer choices, basic `salt of the Earth` punters and very basic décor. Handy for the buses but not worth going out of your way for.
6 Nov 2015 13:32
Don`t try to have a drink upstairs unless it`s from the tap in the loos! Seems to have a forest of furniture at the mo, after a couple of their fine beers, trying to negotiate the maze can be a bit difficult to say the least!
16 Oct 2015 15:01
It`s sort of jumping on the `craft` ale bandwagon at the moment - now there`s a bad start. Beer was ok, lot`s of office wallers in civvies being loud, food looked ok. As has already been said atmosphere in short supply, doesn`t help that there`s no redeeming feature interior wise and the lighting is so gloomy it`s like being in a morgue..needs improving.
21 Sep 2015 08:38
Being redeveloped as a refuge for ex alcoholics amongst others...oh the irony.
18 Sep 2015 15:52
I`ve never liked any incarnation of this place before to be honest - always seemed to be surrounded and frequented by pretentious tosspots drinking trendy beers.....however had a quick pint early evening and have to say it was quite a pleasant experience, not too bad at all...must be mellowing in my old age!
18 Sep 2015 15:49
Surprised no reviews part 2! All wood floors and quaint French farmhouse decoration type stuff, quality covered outside area. Fancy beers, live music, plenty of seating - way to trendy for a bloke like myself but the missus would love it! Moseley comes to Kings Heath, a little gem.
18 Sep 2015 15:39
Surprised there`s no reviews for this cosy little sort of bar come café. Very small venue, trendy beers, decent food cooked at the front, not for beardy ale drinkers but bit of a charmer.
18 Sep 2015 15:33
The Railway Bell, Kidderminster
If you`ve a train to catch this pub is ideal. It doesn`t have any particular selling point to it but I quite liked it. Locals were friendly enough, cricket on the TV and a decent real ale on. I`ve been in a worse!
27 Aug 2015 11:42
The Billiard Hall, West Bromwich
Possibly the worst decorated and furnished JDW I`ve ever been in - like a factory canteen in the 70`s, enough to give you a headache the minute you walk in!
24 Aug 2015 08:29
The Black Horse Hotel, Northfield
All the reviews are pretty spot on in one way or another. Choose carefully where you sit to quaff though - some of the punters appear to have been whisked in from episodes of `Love thy neighbour` or `Please Sir` pretty grim in this day and age.
24 Aug 2015 08:22
Typical JDW, cheaper than a lot of `em though. Would you go out of your way to visit though? Wednesbury seems like a lot of small West Midlands towns - struggling with the current economic climate and lack of opportunity...doesn`t help that the locals give you the `stranger in town` look...make your own mind up!
17 Aug 2015 11:22
It`s been through a turbulent period where it was shut for a while. It`s open again but is exactly the same as before except a few regulars are now at Her Majesties special hotel. It`s standard fare pub wise, if you want a quick lager after a wander round the markets it`ll do.
12 Aug 2015 11:55
if your a complete ale lover this place is for you. Beardy old blokes (I`m not quite there yet) needn`t bother finding another pub it`s here. This is in no way a criticism, if I was in Bearwood it`d be a must visit and if you want peace and quiet the Bear Tavern up the road is not the place for you! Bear Tavern - loud, busy footie pub but with some nice beers and the food is pukka...visit both, pubs need us!
12 Aug 2015 11:45
The Black Country Arms, Walsall
It`s a good `un, if your in Walsall it`s a must visit - nuff said!
12 Aug 2015 11:33
Out of the way up the hill, it`s a nice enough beerhouse with a choice of real ales, friendly staff and regulars...worth a punt if your in the vicinity.
12 Aug 2015 11:29
Pretty unattractive large open plan pub with godawful drinks promotion signs dangling everywhere. Old Speckled Hen was Ok, food was Ok, staff was Ok...I prefer better than `Ok` to be honest though...the young `uns probably love it!
12 Aug 2015 11:23
Quick visit, first impressions it`s an interesting boozer with some decent ales on...only downside ..front bar you can hear the pin drop when you walk in, two head syndrome from the locals...I`m sure they`re friendly enough - probably me!
10 Aug 2015 09:11
Impressive interior, standard JWD fare and plenty of ales....get`s top marks `cause it`s opposite the bus stops for getting back to base..pie, pint and a piddle!
10 Aug 2015 09:02
Blue scrumpy sums it up pretty well, food and beer perfectly acceptable. Looks a safer bet than some of the other pubs on the high street.
30 Jul 2015 09:00
Like the pub over the road it`s a nice enough boozer but like Erdington in general it`s stuck in a bit of a time warp.
9 Jun 2015 12:55
Like being back in 1985, friendly enough staff, standard beer selection, nuff said.
27 May 2015 15:59
It`s a nice enough locals pub, no ales on, bog standard fare.
27 May 2015 15:54
Apart from the slightly dated.... er I mean retro décor inside at odds with the modern glass frontage outside there`s not much not to like about this JDW...plenty of real ales and ciders to enjoy, standard food menu, clean toilets e.t.c and it`s closer to my house than the White Swan in Solihull...bonus!
12 Jan 2015 16:18
This used to be called the Barrel Organ back in the day, a live music, indie, rock venue that to my mind deserved legend status. So whoever bought it for whatever reason and turned it into an Irish theme bar all those years ago cheers! It`s probably one of the most depressing pubs I`ve been into in Brum and I`ve been in a few believe me! I don`t like to be so negative but it really doesn`t have much going for it at the mo...shame.
12 Jan 2015 16:08
Sure this is now called O`Roukes bar opposite coach station. Gather it`s had a very chequered past. Recently taken over and open full time. Too early to make a judgment on it...wait and see what the new gaffa does with it.
5 Jan 2015 15:11
The New Billesley, Kings Heath
Cavernous eating pub, if your noshing it`s standard fare, if your drinking head up the road to Kings Heath.
16 Dec 2014 08:45
Last couple of times I`ve popped in it has been sadly lacking in the real ale department..couple of bog standard and maybe 1 a bit more interesting. Indicative of Moseley at the moment..gone down the nick a bit.
8 Dec 2014 15:43
Has changed hands and Is now called `The one trick pony` ( I jest not!) haven`t been in yet so will have to save my comments until then.
8 Dec 2014 15:37
And now they`re selling 10.1% beer...get the waterproofs on!
19 Nov 2014 12:59
Nice historical looking alehouse couple of minutes from the City Centre. Seems to be getting lots of plaudits from the real ale and cider brigade. Personally I think it`s ok but not somewhere I`d be drinking on a constant basis...same as the Wellington which isn`t quite my cup of Bovril. Must visit if your into that sort of thing.
19 Nov 2014 12:56
Used this pub years ago before they developed the Mailbox, closed about the same time. Was a sort of traditional boozer - not masses to commend it for to be honest, glad to say though it`s reopened. It`s got quite a bland uninspiring interior, couple of ales on, brand beers. Suppose it`s a bit like the Hen and Chickens on Constitution Hill, geared up for Asian food...until I`ve had some I`ll reserve comment on that aspect, useful that it`s across the Street from the Craven.
19 Nov 2014 12:44
The Dragonfly, Birmingham International Airport
It`s an All Bar One now. Trendy everything....could be Broad Street....Ok if you like that sort of thing.
28 Aug 2014 12:17
And they`re having the toilets refurbed..Hoorah! Now if some of the punters could face the right way when they`re having a piddle...I blame the 6%+ stuff they sell myself.
15 Aug 2014 09:13
Visited on a Monday (on holiday OK!) busy but no bother and no screaming kids. Everyone going about their business and having a relaxing beer or 3. About 5 ales on, had a 5%er which the barmaid informed me was a bit more expensive on a Monday than a Sunday....£1.85. The Pear Tree may have it`s critics but for beer quality and price it`s a tough one to beat.
15 Aug 2014 09:10
It`s had a refurb. Apart from the toilets it`s a large improvement, it wasn`t bad before but now it`s much more user-friendly. Quite a few real ales on at a very decent price and the staff are nice too! Safe bet if you live in the vicinity.
4 Aug 2014 13:03
A nice alehouse, not much to add to other comments, try to visit if your in the area, worth it.
7 Jul 2014 08:19
Small trad pub on main drag, shows sport, does a bit of real ale which was in good nick, décor inside a bit underwhelming, staff and regulars friendly enough, ok boozer.
7 Jul 2014 08:16
Haven`t noticed any major change since my last review. It`s an ok if unspectacular pub. The prices are good and there`s usually at least 1 decent ale on. Bar staff are standard friendly and you get served pretty quick. One bonus is it can be a bit quieter than the OC`s so you can have a relaxing slurp with the missus before catching the train.
25 Jun 2014 13:57
Yup, worth going in just to admire the place. Personally didn`t have too much trouble getting served...helps if your a bit of a buildery type as the suits think they'll get mucky if they stand next to you! Prices not vastly expensive...better than the OJS obviously...food looked ok and beers in good nick..must visit.
25 Jun 2014 13:38
Would say that the bar staff need to get their finger out a bit, too chummy with regulars serving wise so can take an age to get a drink, it`s a good pub but waiting time seems like a lifetime!
12 Jun 2014 10:32
Brewdog Birmingham, Birmingham
No question this pub is popular, always seems rammed. Decent beers, bit pricey but not too far train station. My only personal gripe would be the harshness of the interior..all varnished brickwork and minimalist furniture...could do with some flock wallpaper, log fire and a couple of armchairs.
11 Jun 2014 14:58
Agree with other comments, quaint homely pub, close to City Centre, couple of ales, food looked good and friendly staff...worth a visit.
11 Jun 2014 14:51
Whoever put that pathetic comment on the website about this place being shut should crawl back to whence they came. Yup it`s still open, still playing Deep Purple on the jukebox, Has a nice new big TV showing cooking/gardening programmes, plenty of quality real ales (some for under £3!) Thatchers Gold e.t.c , nice unthreatening atmosphere...Top boozer!
5 Jun 2014 08:38
Agree with most people about this place, ok to pop in before the train, pretty featureless inside so lacks a bit of atmosphere.
5 Jun 2014 08:28
Standard sort of boozer. Really nice exterior, wood floor and stained glass windows interior. Decent ale. Could see it might be a bit `lively` of a night. Phone thing happened to myself and a girlfriend years back...we`d had too much beer, some robbing chancer and not paying attention to what was going on...s*** happens
4 Jun 2014 10:47
Now called the Railway. Spit and sawdust boozer, good prices, serves food, couple of real ales. Pop in pub.
23 Jan 2014 14:27
The Hen and Chickens, Birmingham
Popped in early doors wiv a mate to sample the large mixed grill starter....It nearly killed us! The friendly smirking barperson accepted our cash and told us it wouldn`t be long, 15 minutes later a huge mountain of steaming starters duly arrived..."Not many try it, not many finish it!" It was a struggle but we persevered, that was food sorted for two days! Superb indeed, we shall return but just for the balti next time! Must visit.
10 Jan 2014 14:05
Ok the Mrs liked it, the real ale was very nice and it was rammed, they must be doing something right. Toilets are total rip of the Old Contemptables though!
7 Jan 2014 10:51
The Springhead Tavern, Darlaston
Bit of a truck out for me. Nice friendly boozer, apparently has a new landlord who seems to know his stuff, excellent quality ales, bit of rock music in the background, bit of footie on telly, nice bit of banter, Elvis on guitar....all round comfy place, worth the effort.
6 Jan 2014 10:49
It`s had a refurbishment. Walk in, do a right ignoring the family/kiddie dining area and it looks a lot like a pub! Still woefully lacking a beer range but if you want a bit of TV footie and a lager it`s not a bad bet.
29 Nov 2013 12:34
A pot of money has been spent on this place and quite impressive it looks too. Same open plan but updated (and did they need updating!) toilets, glass frontage to get in, large decked area, comfy chairs. Impressive. I can see a lot of people are going to love this place, it`s a pose innit! For a moody `un like me though it doesn`t hit the spot. Too many wannabees comparing designer sweaters, paying top dollar for `quality` foreign beers and well expensive wines..38 quid a chuck anyone? - Yeah loads! Nope I just couldn`t be comfy in this place but then Moseley overall seems to be heading that way...now if they`d just open a Waitrose.....
29 Nov 2013 12:26
Popped in for a cheeky one...it`s an ok sort of pub, not unattractive, unassumingly welcoming. Yes few footie types, cheesy tunes, blokes who won`t move away from the real ale pump clips. ales was ok if unspectacular...I think you get my drift. It`s ok if you live across the road.
22 Nov 2013 13:10
It`s had a `refurb`, I couldn`t see the difference! Had Hopback Summer Lightning on..peachy! Menu looks better.
29 Aug 2013 14:05
The Hen and Chickens, Birmingham
This place was a notorious pit back in the day....back in the day as in past. Looks like they`ve spent a bit of cash and spruced it up, recovered the seats, big TV screens, pool table, snazzy bar e.t.c. The beer was fine, service was fine, yes there was Asians in there..so what? The only person who was dodgy in there was a white bloke who looked a bit unhinged but harmless..might`ve been me! Oh yeah and the food looked pretty nifty. Worth popping into before heading to the Asylum venue to partake in some Death Metal..I ain`t called Blastbeat for no reason!
18 Jul 2013 16:02
The Coach and Horses, Weatheroak Hill
A very nice public house. Nice location, nice interior, nice staff (when I was there) nice ales and nice ciders....it`s all so very nice..oh ok, some gnarly locals at the bar who don`t want to budge over and there was a wasp in the beer garden. Well worth a visit
15 Jul 2013 14:47
The Lost and Found, Birmingham
Decided to have a wander over from the OJS `cause the service was pretty poor for a Saturday night. It`s had a bit of a makeover and a change pf name..bout time `cause Bennetts was a bit of a pit. The decorating`s made a big difference for the better, the toilets are very clean, the service was bang on, the food looked good, four decent real ales on (served in a jug!) and prices that don`t make you faint when the missus wants a vod and lemonade..I keep telling her she`d better off with half a Boondoggle! It`s not the sort of place for hardened tickers but worth a visit if your feeling `trendy`
10 Jun 2013 12:53
It`s a sizzling snake eaterie..lacking a bit of er...sizzle. Lots of builder type blokes suspiciously eyeing anyone from out of town frequenting the bar..regulars get served first...you get the picture. Looked a lot sparse on the ale selection, Guiness was ok but then it usually is anywhere......
14 May 2013 08:31
Great looking pub....if you want a nosh try it out, if you want a beer try the pub over the road.
7 May 2013 08:36
From the outside it`s a dodgy 60`s concrete box, take the top off and it`s a classic estates bungalow pub. Don`t be fooled by the exterior though, inside it`s what the rather grand Saracens Head over the road should be. Nice comfy and clean, no obvious signs of late night brawling, divided up into small areas for private chat. A couple of nice ales on, friendly barstaff..oh alright then there was a Chav at the bar reading the Sun..it`s a pub! Worth a visit.
7 May 2013 08:32
If you looked out the windows of this pub and saw rolling hills, a river, trees and fluffy little sheep (You`d probably had one too many!) then you could be in a place in Shropshire. Unfortunately it`s stuck out the way in Digbeth but so what..it`s a cracking boozer, friendly customers, landlord, good ales and a relaxed atmosphere..it`s a must visit place.
1 May 2013 12:40
It`s a gay bar but looks more like an upmarket cafe..all bright and shiney..just like the clientelle. Bar person was very friendly informing us it was er...happy hour. Standard range of beers, not vastly expensive. Lacks a bit of character but then we`s spit and sawdust blokes and I did inform the missus I`d been in!
1 May 2013 08:53
The Charles Napier, Birmingham
There`s one door to get in..and the same door to get out. Remember what pubs was like pre 2007? Remember what pubs was like 15 years ago? This pub captures that bygone age. Decent if limited in range beers at jaw dropping prices..makes Wetherspoons seem like the Old Joint Stock! Nice friendly barmaid, locals who go about their drinking unfazed by strangers in town. Wide racial mix grogging in harmony..it`s a pub run exactly the way local people want it...not saying that`s what I look for in a boozer but then I don`t live there....
1 May 2013 08:38
Other reviews just about right, was pleasantly surprised though that the regulars/locals didn`t seem to be miffed that some blokes from Brum had invaded their territory, nice friendly place...Oh yeah but don`t sit on the stool at the bar..I think it belongs to the local hard nut..who`s a woman!
1 May 2013 08:20
It`s a Harvester, what more can I say...Not for the drinking man.
1 May 2013 08:07
Well it`s still trucking along in the same vein as I said before but hey..it`s still goin`!
Looked a bit cleaner, beer in a bucket, footie fans wanting to know what team you support, old grunions giving the stranger in town look..not my sort of alehouse but then I don`t have to go in there do I?
19 Apr 2013 10:53
Still a very decent JDWs. Have a manager that seems to have an enthusiasm for the beers which is a definite plus point..even had a free ale tasting session from local Midland breweries - all excellent.
18 Apr 2013 12:41
The Shakespeare Inn, Birmingham
Mcroyal and Odin are spot on...mind the missus reckons the ladies lavs which open straight onto the stairs could be a bit precarious if too much vino or vod had been consumed.
18 Apr 2013 12:31
The Prince of Wales, Birmingham
It`s a trad looking pub in the shadow of a very large concrete convention centre. Haven`t been in here for years..not since the Flapper and Firkin days across the road. Well it`s a tidy little boozer, nice ambience, nice beer at a reasonable price, special cheapy food menu and friendly service. It`s not a total mission to get to really, 15 mins walk from Snow Hiil Station with a goodly few pubs on the way...worth a punt.
27 Mar 2013 16:14
If you like a `real proper pub` this place is for you. There`s nothing touristy about it..Guiness and stew just about sums it up. Not the place to take the missus though..."I couldn`t possibly eat in here!"
8 Mar 2013 10:27
I really liked this pub. Popped in for something to eat (food good) and a pint (Oyster stout...very nice) was impressed with atmosphere and service. Only down side was I didn`t get to sit at the bar, try more beers and watch the footie! Recommended.
6 Mar 2013 10:28
The Dragonfly, Birmingham International Airport
Made a further visit while escaping the UK heat......Decent beers and a substantially larger portion of grub than last time. Shame it closes early so was banished to the Godawful Etap hotel....pants!
26 Feb 2013 12:44
Thought it`d be full of luvvies seeing as it`s next to the theatre but was frequented by beardy studenty types huddled over half a cider when I went in and that included the females! (Only jesting) Ok it was a bit pricey but it`s probably to be expected for the location and the fact that it`s a `real` pub. Ale was of decent quality (Had a guest beer) and it came in a jug! Can you imagine getting beer in a jug these days? I can remember them in the 70`s...Hospitals did a roaring trade because of `em! Anyway a decent change of scenery and recommeded for a visit.
10 Jan 2013 15:07
The Post Office Vaults, Birmingham
It`s a mecca for a variety of alcohlic beverages but not the place to go if you fancy a bit of a lively one...it`s funny isn`t it..a pub selling hefty ales but punters who frown on anyone getting a bit merry!
10 Jan 2013 11:07
It was all going swimmingly until I had the Titanic Wreckage (7.2) ....a shvery nice beer in a decent pub
10 Jan 2013 11:01
Can`t say why but this JDW just doesn`t do it for me. Wasn`t happy with the layout when it was an O`neills, the beer is pretty average quality and the people drinking in there are oblivious to anyone around them....bad pub etiquette..surprised it`s not a brawling pub...
10 Jan 2013 10:56
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
It`s nearly Xmas, German market, twinkly lights, the smell of sausages....good job I`d been saving my cash all year `cause the missus loves this place. It`s impressive, the service is good, it`s rammed, the beer is nice..."I`ll have a double gin and tonic" Nurse! oxygen!
21 Dec 2012 11:15
There`s been a bit of a change in the pub but nothing monumental....well unless you count the introduction of Carling as earthshaking! Still a great pub and 10 minute prog epics on the jukebox enough to make bearded blokes in tank tops faint.
21 Dec 2012 10:50
Did a Friday night visit to reaquaint myself with this JDW. Was surprised by the range of bottled and pump beers. Ales was of the stronger variety and really pretty damn good..... maybe my perception was a little bit clouded though after walking through a cloud of wacky baccy smoke on the way in....and why was some chav blokes sharing a toilet cubicle?....they must be shy!
21 Dec 2012 10:40
Wessex has got it spot on, apparently the food is very nice.
21 Dec 2012 10:19
Seems to be having a bit of a makeover at the mo, it probably needed it! Now they`ve moved that lamp over the bar you can watch the footie on the big screen without being a contortionist. Has a new bar manager but the beer quality has stayed nicely consistant although the cider seems to be rapidly catching up in the popularity stakes. Still an essential boozer and home to good old honest salt of the Earth oddballs.
21 Sep 2012 10:38
Ah Erdington...it`s a difficult place to describe innit. Having spent all of my formative years living there I`ve frequented most of the pubs at some point..lots now sadly or happily not there anymore. So on a rare excursion back there from the other side of the city where I now live it was interesting to see some of the high street rough holes are still there! I`m surprised though that the comments about the Charlie Hall seem a bit negative. Outside it looks like a warehouse, inside it`s a damn fine looking venue. Large, roomy, dark, light, nooks and crannies, high roof.....The rest (beer, food) are JDW standard..service for a Saturday afternoon was quick, place was clean. And here`s one for ya...it`s possibly the most impressive JDW I`ve ever been in..essential to visit atleast once..and they haven`t paid me to say that!
21 Sep 2012 10:27
Looking at the previous comments nothing much has changed with this pub over the last couple of years. Good cheap beers, average grub, good service, nice ambience when it`s not full of noisy overactive `students`, sports on the TV...special promotions which make it cheaper than the JWD`s....all round recommended venue
3 Sep 2012 16:06
It`s an alright kind of pub but a bit yesterday if you know what I mean, sort of reminds me of those Firkin pubs in the 1980`s. It ticks a lot of the boxes, cheap prices, reasonable food, pro barstaff and I shouldn`t say it but their own brand ale tasted pretty good, It`s a starter pub for the Blastbeaters.
23 Aug 2012 13:23
The Dragonfly, Birmingham International Airport
Had the mixed grill while plodding the hours away till the flight...as usual praying I didn`t get food poisoning and spending all holiday on the throne! No worries though, Real ales was ok but cost more than 3..typical airport prices though cheaper than at the other end! Nice to sit on the balcony and watch harassed travellers knowing it was our time next!
7 Aug 2012 15:02
Seems to have a good reputation for beer and food and er yup the beer is ok and the food is up to scratch. The staff was unusually helpful and the prices are what you`d expect from a quality out of the way boozer. Doesn`t strike me as a proper session venue though...touch of the hooray Henrys about it that`d put you off.
7 Aug 2012 14:50
The Golden Bee, Stratford Upon Avon
Fair play to this JWD that it seems to have gone easy on the big tourist bit and kept the Bard theme low key. Not a bad pub, usual Wethers offering, ale was very nice and not at an inflated price, worth going in for a quick pint Romeo while Juliet is doing her hair.
1 May 2012 12:59
My mate prefers this `spoons to the White Swan around the corner. Popped in one midweek afternoon, pretty quiet, no bruisers on the door, no stag/hen parties, no dress restrictions, no banging tunes....I was most disappointed! Apart from the weekend madness it`s a pretty bog standard JWD, the ales was up to scratch, old blokes saving a few quid on the grog and passing shoppers having a cheap nosh.
29 Feb 2012 16:45
The other half of the Baldwin but with a slightly better reputation. Biggish pub, appears to be frequented by brassy women, local hard nuts and builders..... Seems to have quite a bit going on entertainment wise..though the Elvis impersonator was more like showaddywaddy meets Mud than the King (His missus loves him though) Perfect Guiness as you`d expect...just don`t venture in looking timid.
23 Feb 2012 14:56
Well it`s still open so what do i know! Apparently greedy pub company discovered they couldn`t make loads of cash selling it - so plan B,,carry on as before. They`ve got a new gafferess, a pooltable, nice chatty barstaff, the odd decent real ale and the prices ain`t too bad. I`m pleased it`s still there!
12 Jan 2012 12:42
The Brighton Arms, Small Heath
Nipped in after the footie to get a lift yonder. large interior, sparsely decorated, pool table, big Tv screen, tattooed barmen, cheapish beers, kids in prams...could be a bit `lively` of a night I expect......
12 Jan 2012 12:26
According to my mate it`s closed and boarded up. Shame, the food was top banana...sadly missed.
7 Nov 2011 12:53
Yup it`s a trendy looking place, nice interior though, tiling reminds me of the White Swan in Digbeth. Beer was ok and prices not too steep. Went there early doors so not sure if it ever gets really busy. One of the better ones I`ve been to round those parts.
7 Nov 2011 12:49
The first thing you notice on entering is the smell of roast dinners....flipping marvellous and looking at what`s served probably tastes as good as it smells! Nicely done out, comfy, subdued lighting, lively atmosphere, good beers, all round quality boozer - must visit
7 Nov 2011 10:41
It`s a bit trendy, a bit spartan, a bit quiet...not loud enough for a blastbeat man! A goodly selection of very nice ales, friendly staff, no hooolighans...worth a visit.
7 Nov 2011 10:33
The Slug and Lettuce, Solihull
Large open plan, big smoke garden, live band Saturday night, Clean toilets, lots of staff, bit pricey, bit posey, you get the drift, ok
5 Sep 2011 16:05
Typical O`niells in most respects. Saturday night, covers band, pretty rammed, quick service e.t.c....Ok boozer.
5 Sep 2011 15:59
Should be fair and say that I came in here a week or two back and it weren`t three bad. Not a lot to knock it for, helped that it wasn`t rammed for once.
27 Jun 2011 16:08
Goose At The Fighting Cocks, Moseley
Very much how I remember it a couple of years back. Not as rough as it used to be probably `cause most of the clientelle have been transplanted from Hurst Street. Guiness was OK, bit pricey bog standard bar.
27 Jun 2011 16:01
Some of the middle aged Irish regulars look at the pre-giggers from the HMV next door a bit suspiciously and the language can be a bit fruity if the hurling is on the TV but it`s a decent trad boozer with all the fittings, worth a visit.
23 Jun 2011 11:29
Large non descript open plan boozer, situated across the road from a small industrial estate. Has a bungalow pub feel to it without the sticky carpet. Couple of beers I`ve never come across - Magners golden, and a cream flow mild?! Prices closer to where I come from depending on what your drinking, though the bitter was cheap as chips. Put a good spread on if your having a function. Not traditional in any sense of the word, more of a passing by pub.
3 Jun 2011 10:03
On a first visit I quite like this pub. There`s nothing outstanding about the place at all, large old fashioned building, basic decor, basic (well kept) beers at a reasonable price, no frills boozer. It`s a slightly guilty pleasure of a weekend though....so I`m told....mature clientelle having a right mash up to cheesy tunes...can`t be a bad thing..decent and worth a visit.
6 Apr 2011 12:41
Make`s some of the other JDW`s look like scabby dives. Bit of effort gone into this place, big open layout, wooden floors, large glass exterior, plenty of seating, range of ales.....some of the other pubs in this chain need a similar revamp...Square Peg anyone?
6 Apr 2011 12:28
Average sort of venue as far as I`m concerned, but that`s not such a bad thing. Beer was ok, people was ok, clean, not too pricey e.t.c. Not quite my cup of Tetley music wise though...bit 18-50 Ibiza or Megamuff....all together now....
6 Apr 2011 12:19
I expect Marstons are in the sticky stuff financially and need to ofload pubs to reduce their debt. Don`t forget they are a business, alehouses and their customers are of no importance.....profit is King and even if a pub is in profit it`s how big that profit is that matters.
I`ve no doubt the Village will close.....no matter what anybody does, just another national statistic of `hard times ahead`.
I know some people will bemoan another erosion of the Mosely `spirit` but unfortunately it`s not 10 years ago, there`s still decent pubs, Tescos will be built....change, whether you like it or not.
30 Mar 2011 13:20
Old Moseley Arms, Balsall Heath
My mates reckon this is one of the best pubs in Birmingham.....first time I`ve visited it and initially I think it`s ok. Had a real ale festival on at the time and the ones I tried was exceptionally good. Large screen showing England pretending to be good at footie and failing miserably of course! Wasn`t too sure about the mock tudor ceiling beams that looked like lengths of 4 be 2 but had a comfy sort of ambience. Might be bit scary leaving the area late at night though unless it`s in a bulletproof taxi! Worth a visit or three...in daylight
29 Mar 2011 17:44
The Wellington Hotel, Birmingham
The shaven headed barmen looked like startled rabbits under the onslaught of scary metalheads.....God knows what they`d have done if Manowar, the Metal kings, came in with their swords of steel ready to pillage and destroy (someone had beaten `em to it in the bogs!). Anyway 3.50 for a Guiness in this place was a veritable bargain compared with the 4.20 garbage at the O2.
29 Mar 2011 17:00
Me again, managed to pop in and have the mixed grill 8.20, scoffed the lot...so what does that tell you?....it wasn`t big enough!
25 Feb 2011 10:16
The Garrick Inn, Stratford Upon Avon
Never been much of a fan of Stratford as a whole, plastic olde England for American and Japanese tourists.....Poundland and souvenir shop signs detracting from the interesting architecture.....bung a couple of quid on everything and the punters will lap it up. Quite liked this pub though, looks the part and you could probably have a bit of a session in it if you could monopolise the front bar. Real ale was rather nice, cider was rather nice, bar staff was rather nice...you get the drift...worth a vist or two.
25 Feb 2011 10:11
A number 1 Odin?......sounds like a bit of a number 2 to me.......
17 Feb 2011 08:13
The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham
Managed to have a couple in this place on a Friday night......great atmosphere, great beer, really good service....must visit place.....excellent pub.
11 Feb 2011 08:45
Visited on a busy Friday night , rammed `cause there was rugby on the tv screens. Crowd vocal but not in a `your gonna get your head kicked in` way, so rowdy but pleasant atmosphere. Couple of real ales on which were in top nick....for the Old Joint Stockers price watchers....pint and a large glass of paint stripper 6.50...decent pub.
11 Feb 2011 08:31
Managed a mid-week visit and found this place thankfully short on chavs even though they was showing the England game, a guest beer on and the Guiness was excellent...ups the points score!
11 Feb 2011 08:21
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
The Briar Rose is just a pub, although very cheap.....prefer the Old Contemptables....2 minute walk from OJS......excellent range of well kept ales - pint and a large glass of paint stripper 7......
10 Feb 2011 16:25
They`ve had a couple of real ales on for a while which are pretty acceptable. Some of the prices are quite appealing - Banks`s bitter and a lager 2.05. The all day breakfast is cheap and fills a hole....and yup there are some oddballs in there (including me on occassions) the pick must be the twirling Frank Sinatra addict with the arse hanging out of his ripped kegs.
4 Feb 2011 08:47
There seems to be a raft of new staff in place at the Anchor, all very friendly, no need for the landlord to have taken such drastic action about the previous problems though......only kidding, still a great pub.
4 Feb 2011 08:24
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Odin has obviously fallen for the wine hype or has too much money to burn. For 6 I`d want the wine in a 10 gallon bucket served by a strapping buxom serving wench (that`s not meant in an Andy Gray sexist way incase your concerned)
The Briar Rose a minutes walk away....in Birmingham City centre...... served the same paint stripper and an ale for 5.40.
3 Feb 2011 16:42
Apparently the landlord has had a word with the regulars about the spitting, farting and spilling beer problem and assured them the barstaff will stop doing it............
28 Jan 2011 15:27
Popped in for a quick after work slurp and noticed how clean the place was. Smattering of punters seemingly enjoying the food (no kitchen fire while I was there!) Noticed Mondays are cheap as chips night if you like lager. One guest real ale on at 1.99 a pint, so good that I had 2 (nothing to do with the price.....) and according to my cider expert mate, the Strongbow was the best he`d tasted in recent years. Decent pub.
28 Jan 2011 12:36
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Lovely place well known for being expensive but when they`re charging 6 quid for a large glass of white wine then you know the mick is being truly taken. 9.15 for said vino and a real ale has made this top of the pops for prices...even a greedy bonus grabbing banker would struggle to afford getting merry in this place!
28 Jan 2011 12:23
Glad to report after months away from this place that the hen/stag parties of drunken revellers, Barry the DJ, bloke selling perfume in the gents, middle aged men checking their watches `cause the missus don`t trust them to be out after 12.00 is all still in place.
25 Jan 2011 12:51
Now I know what happened to Cher Lloyd when she got booted off the X factor, went to work behind the bar in this place.......explains the lethargic demeanor and the face like a baby with a slapped backside....priceless!
14 Jan 2011 13:20
The Strawberry Fields, Shirley
Looks a bit like a Dutch Cafe from the outside. Strange sort of bar, across the road you have the traditional boozer the Plume, then you have this place. It`s a pretty small establishment.....50 people in there and it`d be a sardine can! Been it there a few times and stuck to the lager, usually one person serving so tend to go for the easiest quickest drink to get. Can`t say the locals are that friendly.....`your not from round these parts are you? but it`seems a safe enough place. Ok venue to go for a quiet beer with the missus.
11 Jan 2011 08:45
Must be a rebuild, I sat in the original hilltop boozer watching the smoke from the Hamdsworth riots in the 80`s.....
6 Jan 2011 08:43
Used to be a traditional big boozer years back but then succumbed to the theme pub explosion, probably in the late 90`s. Very non-descript open plan pub now, Ember Inns type decor, large bar adorned with lots of hand pulls, food menu e.t.c
Trouble is the hand pulls are only serving brand beers...all the real ale pump clips were turned round so can`t comment on beer quality, unless you want to talk about Guiness, Strongbow?
It`s also a pub of two halves. Walk through the door to be welcomed by respectable middle aged middle class tipplers enjoying a glass of wine and a pint....quiet conversation, you get the picture......
Go further and ah ha!....The landlord is wearing a Football shirt, lads in their 20`s who should know better are wearing the sports romper suits, semi chavs are huddled in dark corners looking like they`ve had one spliff too many.......
6 Jan 2011 08:20
Was in this pub not long back and although I wasn`t greeted with open arms the service and beer were perfectly acceptable....they probably thought I looked scary and rough! Not the sort of area to wandering about on your own in the early hours though.
7 Dec 2010 16:41
Been told it`s a bit of a moody locals pub, could hear the football chanting from outside and some bloke singing `there could be trouble ahead` on the doorstep.......decided to check it out on a quiter night.
2 Dec 2010 08:38
Drank an ex girlfriend under the table in this boozer and got chucked out because my mate was spreadeagled rat-assed in the road outside...yeah..great pub!
30 Nov 2010 16:17
In there again, excellent Guiness, large screen footie game and impressively friendly staff, extra bonus points.
25 Nov 2010 16:28
The bouncer shot himself in the foot. Even rough people think this is a rough pub.
23 Nov 2010 12:44
Agree with Odin, surpassed themselves at the weekend, had hangover Sunday to prove it. To see Furyon for free was a top bonus, awesome.
23 Nov 2010 12:38
Too many pump clips on where the beer has run out, Old rascal has been gone for weeks and they`ve still got the clips on. Big head the ball being sat on was just being friendly, Police gave him a guided tour of the local nick to show how much they liked him.
23 Nov 2010 12:34
See they`ve put the beer prices up and they`re selling festival ales at the new level. Still quality at the price though.....once you navigate past the smokers in the doorway of course!
17 Nov 2010 12:17
Not a beer tickers pub, more of a Broad Strret establishment transported to Digbeth. Expect it could be quite lively in the early hours and if you wanted a barney it`d be available......from the wenches who frequent the place! If you`ve got a bit about yourself then you`d probably like this venue.
17 Nov 2010 12:05
Some valid points from Roy 22, especially about the beer ticker scene. They just take it all too seriously, beer snobbery of the highest order!
As for the clientele, depends when you go in. Yeah you get the old lost souls from the centre across the road, who deserve a bit of sympathy, then there`s the footie crowd, the metalheads, the eccentric morris dancers......and even the odd occasional ...woman!.....quite diverse really.
16 Nov 2010 14:53
The Figure of Eight, Birmingham
Saturday nights, four deep at the bar, full of boyband wannabees and shrieking damsels (?) sticky carpet, bar awash with grog, bogs awash with p***, dumbo`s ordering food at 9.45pm......typical Broad Street mash up.
8 Oct 2010 15:49
Odin should try the Spread Eagle in Acocks Green if he thinks this JDW is bad. Surprised at all the bad comments about this place, OK it looks like a railway bar from the outside and it`s like one big lounge bar from the inside but it`s not a massive difference from most other JDW`s. I wouldn`t even say the punters are worse than most chain boozers...if anything it`s a bit dull atmosphere wise.
8 Oct 2010 15:39
Ah! the Adam and Eve............
Has always a had a reputation for being a late night drinking sleaze pit for the waifs and strays who like a bit of live music, illegal substances and vast amounts of alcohol. Anyone of a certain age who hasn`t fallen out the door in the early hours to the dawn chorus doesn`t deserve the Blue Peter badge - wimps!
Well I`m glad to report that the place hasn`t changed much (except for the illegal substances bit of course) expensive beer, low lighting, bands who sound better after...50 pints...it`s an institution.
20 Sep 2010 13:03
Rather unspectacular looking pub from the outside, noticed a large covering of ivy on an exterior wall......greenery in Digbeth?!!
Has all the trappings of being an Irish pub but that doesn`t seem to dictate the ethos of the place. Match days, lots of blokes who look like typical fans but without the scowling and undercurrent of possible violence...i.e. friendly and with braincells, geezers!
A very cosy looking pub (cushions on the highstools!) couple of real ales - 2.50, top Guiness........
Must be one of the nicest pubs in Digbeth or even the City centre, excellent.
20 Sep 2010 12:49
Did I say best metal pub in Brum? Must be one of the best Metal pubs in the UK! Metal bands playing upstairs for free Friday night and if you didn`t like their particular shade of noise, then you could go and watch the free bands downstairs! Brilliant, Horns up!
20 Sep 2010 12:24
Think Stein`s just about summed it up. Has lost the spit and sawdust touch though which made this place strangely appealing and it`s just a bit too bright - sunglasses optional. Gets the thumbs up!
17 Sep 2010 12:51
Beers have been real quality lately and from some top (my non-CAMRA opinion) breweries. A pub gaffa was saying he thought the trouble with BITE was it tended to encourage only negative comments.....haven`t got any issues with this pub, ........except........only kidding!
15 Sep 2010 10:59
Sort of local for grown up uni students. Not much to knock it for, maybe a bit cliquee. Being a nob though I had a pint of Brew 11 for nostalga sake, some things are best left in the past! Good pub.
15 Sep 2010 10:48
A weekend of surprises. In there Friday night, nice atmosphere, service instant, toilets.....clean (with some piped music) bloke doing a turn on the guitar......
14 Sep 2010 08:47
Couldn`t get me hat on, went in there Saturday afternoon, footie on the telly, triffic real ale 2.50, Daily Star left on the window ledge - so could catch up with Wayne and Colleen, someone eating steak`n kidney pie and chips, scantily clad maidens walking past to the Arcadian.....it was like being in a geezers pub.
14 Sep 2010 08:27
The Wellington Hotel, Birmingham
Been in this pub pre-gig when the O2 doormen decide to let you stand outside for half hour...`cause they can! Sos me old mates but the beer prices aint justified (good quality though)...just not in the right area and needs a refurb. Don`t know about the gay pub bit, but if it`s usually quiet then they not using it and since when has sexuality dictated beer prices?!
What I reckon is they should profit from the rock brigade. There`s an excellent second hand record shop next door (Nice 1 bargain bin) put on some cheap beer promotions gig nights, stop playing Lady Gaga, leave the toilets be (Costas reborn) and paint the place black...sorted!!

Some pubs you want to go in, convenience, interest, curiosity...
Some pubs you don`t want to go in, personal taste, choice, reason.....
Some pubs there`s no point going in.....
For me The Clements is the last one.....
I`ve walked past this pub on numerous occasions heading to the footie ground, under the urine drenched railway arch past the fast food shops....
What`s the point of going in there? Well, beer quality must be quite low on it`s agenda going by the samples outside on display - Brand lager, lashed Guiness, blue alcopops. Food? Yup, steak sarnie.
It`s a hardcore football fan venue - the regulars stand outside on match day, glowering at everybody and anybody - the Police (Who must love the overtime) fellow supporters who aren`t hardcore enough, each other and Godforbid any away supporters who wander past lost.....they love it! What`s the point lads?

Nothing bungalow pub about this one, no potholes in the carpark, burnt out vehicles, boarded up windows or gangs of feral yoofs vandalising the bus stop. Had a refurb a while back but hasn`t really changed the stamp of the place. Pretty middle class with the odd couple of builders (Extensions a go go!) in it, very sedate and untroubled. Not a pub to be worried about going into for a pint and a nosh.

According to one of the women I work with who lives just round the corner from this pub, it`s a really great boozer! Was the drunken bloke in the doorway the one who robbed the Building Society and was celebrating his good fortune....before he was nicked?

A difficult pub to review, you either like it or hate it or find yourself in between both. It`s a plastic pub full of romanticed memorabillia, a vision of a far away land that never existed...the truly Irish mates I know wouldn`t touch it with a barge pole! But I digress!....saying it`s a pub out of sorts with Mosely is wrong, it fits in perfectly with all the other venues in that it caters for the folks who like sport, beering, X-factor, The Sun and the Mosely Dance centre.....in other words out to get trashed for the weekend! The quality of the food is of no concern, or the beer, it`s there for a purpose and does it`s job well, fed and watered - what more do you want?! Ok the toilets are a pit and it`s a mission trying to get to them through the heaving throng but the service really isn`t that bad. You might get some free tunes from a band playing the Kaiser Chiefs (When they`d rrather be playing AC/DC!) and when it shuts the other pubs are still open.......

Used to be a Banks`s pub, think they were bought out by Marstons or some other faceless pub chain. Inside reminds me of a quaintly dated pub lounge of about 25 years ago...when a pint cost tuppence more than in the bar `cause the room had carpet! Respectable pub all round, expect the food is good standard fare, the beer is well looked after, clean, subdued lighting e.t.c. Bit of an oddity though being situated between the Pear Tree (Wetherspoons - nuff said) and the Nob up the Hill (Chavvy and unfriendly) attracts customers who appear to be ageing Status Quo fans or retired teachers.
8 Sep 2010 15:38
Been closed for a couple of months, went past it on a regular basis and it never seemed that busy - big pub, low custom = shutters. Sign outside saying it`s turning into a pharmacy. Shouldn`t think religeous bods would pay hard cash to leave it empty....much cheaper to have an electrical fault and burn it down, like several old pubs in the past.
7 Sep 2010 14:48
Pub across the road from a small housing estate close to the City centre. The other reviews sum it up pretty well, sort of place you`d be ill advised to swan into with an `I am` attitude. They could probably do without the pool table in the small lounge/bar - take care when you enter! The beer was perfectly acceptable, found a cluttered corner to sit in and enjoy it away from regulars in various luminous jackets...if you need a brickie, chippie, roofer, plasterer it`s the place to go!
7 Sep 2010 12:32
Used this pub quite a bit, had something of the Costas about it. Allegedly, when the fire broke out in Edwards (Which lead to the demolishing of most of the block) it was in the upstairs mens toilets - seeing as how they were always awash with p*** it`s amazing the flames took hold!
6 Sep 2010 13:33
Excellent review below. been in here once or twice and never found it unpleasant, bit quiet, retains that Irish quarter atmosphere and maybe that specific customer base. Trouble is Digbeth has changed a lot over the last couple of years, especially with all the reevelopment and not so sure that catering for such a narrow clientele is the way forward, nice pub however -excellent Guiness of course!
6 Sep 2010 13:26
Big open plan discount drinkery, Cheap as chips beverages sold by staff who probably worked previously in the parole service. Wouldn`t advise anyone to go in showing either attitude or disdain for the place, don`t think the regulars would be too pleased. managed somehow to share a table with some local drinkers and found them to be genuine `rough diamonds`, bit scary but pretty interesting to talk to. They have the odd turn on of a weekend `Bob and his amazing musical organ` `Jennie Goldpants of the x factor` type stuff, worth a visit.

The Old Contemptibles, Birmingham
Decent big traditional looking pub, only popped in for one so couldn`t really gauge the ethos of the place, seemed friendly enough though and interesting selection of beers and food (bit pricey) Gets top marks though for the fact that the far wall looked like it was covered with reddish flock wallpaper..should be obligatory in every hostelry!
6 Sep 2010 09:31
Or as we call it `the pub with no name` Unusual venue, all glass surround, no roof and no front door (bit like a burnt down bungalow chav boozer!). Has the curse of the Briar Rose - big tables and stools in the entrance so the assault course beckons as you enter the place! Found the staff pretty reasonable and unusually speedy, beer, food...blah blah it`s a Wetherspoons. Endless fun looking out the windows watching the young `uns tottering past heading to Broad Street, especially in the winter when it`s minus 5c and they`re wearing the invisible beer coats....which reminds me, this is the coldest venue I`ve ever been in.....practice first aid on hyperthermia casualties....go in February!

Goose on Two Streets, Kings Heath
Every hamlet needs a pub like this one. Beer tuppence a bucket, the regulars all know each other and are probably related, tattoed women draped over the doormen, bar staff who tell unruly punters to shut up and sit down, sly looks from regulars who don`t like `townies`, walking fashion show from T K Max, and so on and so forth. Why knock it when it performs such a useful purpose to the community....you`d only be mortified if they all turned up at YOUR pub!
3 Sep 2010 14:53
....... knew it was a bad idea when I walked in and heard someone playing the `duelling banjos`
3 Sep 2010 14:33
The Lost and Found, Birmingham
Large cavernous place, all the atmosphere of a library, couples huddled away in the corners hoping their other half doesn`t turn up and catch `em out, when you go to the bar all heads turn..like they do at a cricket match when something actually happens (like betting scandals), be OK when they finish painting the mural on the back wall.
3 Sep 2010 14:23
And if you want a slash you have to negoiate yourself past packs of rabid staffordshire bull terriers....`Don`t worry lovey he doesn`t bite.....`
3 Sep 2010 13:50
Might aswell be the first! Think of an open plan airport bar, everything quid dearer (or more!) than anywhere else`cause your a captive. Characterless and featureless but then would you expect anything different really? Full marks to the staff, endless succession of faceless punters looking harassed and knackered and expecting a cheery face....it`s a tough job!
3 Sep 2010 13:33
Nothing wrong with a cloudy pint if it`s a wheat beer.....always said the customers at the`Wellie` take it too seriously. And another thing, if your drinking ten pints of premium real ale in a session, how do you know it tastes any good? Should think your spannered after six and your tastebuds have gone on strike.
3 Sep 2010 13:10
Yeah seems to be a pub that`s trying to be something a bit different, not quite sure what though! It`s a bit of a mish mash really, narrow comfy lounge type bar, and a mini Costas like area at the back which would probably appeal to reclusive Goths! on the night the bar staff were pretty friendly, flinging cocktail shakers about (It`s a theme night!) some blokes with a couple of decks playing obscure early soul music (not bad at all actually) and yes females...though they seemed happy in aech others company....they`ve got some bizarre burger night coming up and......you get the drift. Worth a visit so you can make your own mind up!
1 Sep 2010 14:50
Used to be quite a buzzing indie/rock sort of drinking hole trendily stashed away up a back street. Now it`s a poor imitation of a Wetherspoons, cheap, beers and 2.99 food specials, expect it does a good trade of a day when the office wallers need a quick bite and a beer. Found it wearily depressing on the night though, few punters, piped R&B drone and finding the toilets was easy - just follow your nose! Sort of pub that needs a kick up the arse or the shuters will go up!
1 Sep 2010 14:27
The Sun on the Hill, Birmingham
Looks like this pub has gone for the `in crowd` image. Big open room with a balcony, bit bright, bit lounge, bit trendy studenty. Lots of beers and wines, don`t know if any taste any good - stuck to a coke as the mod and ska music put me off my beerhead. Just not my cup of tea (or beer) really.
1 Sep 2010 14:15
A very nice relaxed alehouse. Lovely building, ornately tiled inside and well looked after - the sort of pub they don`t really make anymore! Think there`s a family connection with the barstaff so the service is quite consistant, friendly, low key. Couple of uspectacular real ales, Guiness Ok but struggled with the larger and standard bitters on occasions. Big screen TV, ropey jukebox, comfy seating.....nice place for a quiet session.
27 Aug 2010 09:23
And I thought it was just me that didn`t like the place! To be fair none of the `regulars` paid me much notice, probably because the extremely loud banging techno music meant they never heard me come in. The crisps were nice though.
25 Aug 2010 15:58
The Fox is a bit of a strange `un, stuck between the Hen/stag night Reflex types, the Trendies in the Arcadian, the theatre luvvies across the road and the gay quarter. The pub itself seems a bit too traditional to be situated where it is but then I suppose it`s a listed building so the developers couldn`t demolish it! The beer`s ok, tried the odd real ale and they were in good nick, tend to stick to the lager as the bar staff can be a bit ellusive and can`t be bothered waiting for the ale to settle. Decent people watching pub with large windows that face the theatre and the main entrance to the arcadian...not that anyone should be perving at the scantily clad ladies wandering about...disgusting behavior! Just remember when vacating the building, left turn gay quarter, right turn straightsville.
25 Aug 2010 15:48
Further to Odins comments, The pegs a multi-cultural boozer so any dimwit trying to peddle extreme political views would probably be asked to leave...through the nearest window!
25 Aug 2010 10:22
I suppose because of it`s location and it`s size....and it`s a Wetherspoons, there`s always going to be some people who dislike this pub. In my humble opinion though it does what it says on the tin, decent food, large cheap selection of beers, usually a couple of quality real ales on, clean toilets and staff who are up to the job. just seemed bizarre that the last time I was there it seemed to be full of middle aged men who dressed like they`d just come off a Kenyan safari!
24 Aug 2010 14:12
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Not too much to knock about this pub, doesn`t mean I`d want to spend all night in there though - unless entertaining a member of the opposite sex of course! Impressive building, subtle tunes so you can have a conversation without shouting, beers decents enough...though pricey! Door and bar staff friendly and efficient....maybe lacks a bit of atmosphere `cause of it`s size.
23 Aug 2010 14:00
Tickers paradise, millions of real ales on all in top notch condition, no footie, no music, very few mass produced brand beers. Always pretty rammed if you can get in the door - wins CAMRA pub of the year every year! Negatives...faint wiff of real alers breaking wind (I know, it proves the beer is properly brewed and in perfect condition) decor faintly reminds me of a railway station bar...lets compare train numbers....customers take it all too seriously!
23 Aug 2010 10:52
Barry also shouts `Sing a song` and warbles along to the bargain bin hits of the day.....full credit though he also takes the mick out of all the demented beer lashed stag do`ers trying to impersonate Michael Jackson. Yup, pile up car crash of a boozer, see you there Saturday!
23 Aug 2010 10:32
A true legend of Birmingham rock pubs....always the scuffiest, had the worst bogs in the World, dodgy drunk punks and metalheads (living in harmony!) lovely ladies and beer that would strip paint....and sticky carpet!.....sorely missed.
23 Aug 2010 10:23
A not unnatractive pub when it`s not too packed, gather the food and beer is ok in the day. Weekends are a different kettle of fish, bar staff do sterling job under pressure and service is reasonable considering the crush. Door personel keep the t-shirt /shorts/trainers riff raff out (It`s the weekend - make an effort!) and keep a lid on any aggravation - which amazingly seeing as how busy it is happens very rarely.
23 Aug 2010 10:15
Sort of pub you`d meet up in before going somewhere else or polishing off the evening before getting a taxi outside. Staff, beer, food Ok, Wetherspoons innit! They`ve revamped the toilets which now resemble the ones at the Birmingham City football ground...and that`s not a compliment in case you were wondering! Another thing they should consider is getting rid of some of the tables and stools, getting in, out and up to the bar s`like a flipping assault course!
23 Aug 2010 10:05
Decent pub,, not too over subscribed as it`s up the hill (the Wetherspoon regulars are usually too wrecked to get up there!) Food and beer have dramatically improved since the new landlord took over, couple of reasonably priced quality real ales. Probably best pub for sport in Mosely, 3 Tv`s and a big screen. Forget the jukebox as some nob continually plays 50`s rubbish giving the pub the ambience of some rundown back street bungalow boozer. Bar staff are pretty good and friendly though the landlord could do with buying an iron as he usually looks quite dishevelled.
16 Aug 2010 14:12
Great pub! Large variety of beers in good nick. Bar staff full of character - love`em! Really good juke box, plenty of footie on the tv`s and a really friendly atmosphere. Never a dull moment when the regulars are in!
9 Aug 2010 11:30
Yeah best Metal pub in Brum. Beer prices not too bad, efficient door staff and full of `characters`. And if your lucky decent free live music!
9 Aug 2010 11:15
The Costermonger, Birmingham
Well it`s reopened just as it was (well they fixed the toilets a bit) Yes Metal has returned to this legendary shed...long may it continue!!
