The Prince Llewellyn, Beddgelert

Based almost on the bridge over the river. Nice attractive stone built building with a nicely laid out lounge with a small bar with a brick surround. 4 hand pumps offering a good selection of real ales. Seating, however only average.

The Bulls Head, Reigate

A small traditional pub with the bar located to the right of it's narrow long lounge. There is another room at the back of the lounge. there is a garden/patio at the rear of the pub. Although they had 4 hand pumps, there was only 3 beers on when I visited the pub - Sharps Doombar and Sea Fury and St Austell Tribute. All Cornish beers! It is reasonably comfortable and very friendly.

The Red Cross Inn, Reigate

Located at the corner of the one-way system, this large pub was very quiet when I was in there. I was the only customer! The bar is located in the larger of the 2 rooms which appears to be set up for sports with very basic seating. To the right of that is a small lounge with predominantly church pew like seating which has its own little bar which wasn't being used. I had Pilgrim Surrey bitter and they also had St Austell proper Job bitter.

The Surrey Oaks, Newdigate

Located in Parkgate rather than Newdigate, this pub has won many CAMRA awards for its cask bitters. Its long lounge is 4 distinct rooms with a very low roof at one end. Seating is mainly made up of church like pews and other assorted wooden chairs but is reasonably comfortable. There is seating at the front and side of the pub and in their large garden. There is also a fair sized car park. The kitchen is open plan and is in the centre of the pub. It is nice to drink in a pub which is not a glorified restaurant. A fine choice of real ales, some from some unusual breweries, all served nice and cold on a very warm summer afternoon. Highly recommended.

Royal Oak, Dorking

A small Youngs pub near the Chart Downs estate. It is very much a local's pub but is none the worse for that. It means that beer prices are lower than the Young's norm. As well as it's own car park, there is parking opposite. The right hand side of the pub is used for dining while the left hand side is the main bar. Despite a long bar, it had only 2 real ales on it, Youngs Bitter and a special which was Proper Job when I was there. There were 2 old leather sofas which were very comfortable and a large covered garden area. A unpretentious local's pub.

The Bell, Reigate

A small narrow pub near the centre of Reigate. It has a long thin lounge with the bar to the right. Although a Greene King pub, it had 3 guest ales on the bar. It is reasonably comfortable with a small patio at the rear. Nearby is the outside Gent's toilet. A good no nonsense boozer.

22 Mar 2017 11:53

The Jolly Farmers, Betchworth

Now called The Pheasant, it is a large pub on the A25 with a large lounge and an even larger restaurant with the bar in the middle. A good selection of 6 real ales and no Doombar in sight! It is very comfortably laid out and even though it is very much a foodie pub, there is plenty of room for those that just want a quiet drink. It has an equally large patio area which must be very pleasant in the summer.

22 Mar 2017 11:49

Cobbetts, Dorking

A tiny pub at the back of an off licence specialising in bottled beers. All beer is served direct from the barrels. There were 2 on the bar and the rest were in the cellar. Staff are very friendly and knowledgeable on real ale. There is a small room at the bar where you can sit down and an even smaller patio. t is low on comfort and amenities but good for beer drinking.

The Duke of Cumberland, Henley

A very picturesque pub located up a narrow winding country lane. Apparently it has extensive gardens and views but since it was a cold wet night, I couldn't see them. A very small central lounge with a restaurant area to the right and a room in the extension at the rear. As there was a function, I couldn't try that room and we weren't allowed in the restaurant so some of us were forced to drink in the substantial smokers' shelter in front of the pub. Luckily it had a log fire because it was rather chilly. It had outside toilets but a reasonable selection of real ales.

30 Jan 2017 14:22

The Golden Lion, Southwick

A deceptively large pub with a lounge that loops around the central bar. Seating is comfortable and decor is good. A good choice of real ales including beer from Langham's brewery. The only negative is the outside toilets.

30 Jan 2017 14:15

The Wheatsheaf, Shedfield

A very small pub with a single lounge which sells beer direct from the barrel. Some seating and it majors on beer from the Flowerpot Brewery.

30 Jan 2017 14:13

The Cricketers, Chessington

Located in a residential area of the town, it is very much a local's pub and was very quiet on my visit. Normally there are 2 real ales on the bar but there had only Adnams Cashmere on as the landlord was on holiday. It has a large lounge with the bar in the middle and a pool table and darts on the left side of the lounge. The lounge on the right included some comfy sofas. It also has a patio area. It doesn't serve food which can be a blessing.

30 Jan 2017 14:11

The Sultan, South Wimbledon

This pub has 2 distinct bars and a small patio area. The bar featured beers from the Hopback and Downton breweries. Food was basic but cheap. Seating was comfortable, especially in the conservatory. It was holding a beer festival on the patio when i was there and there was a good range of real ales at reasonable prices.

30 Jan 2017 14:07

The Albany, Thames Ditton

A pub that has 1 large lounge with the bar in the middle, Whilst the lounge is comfortable with fine views over the Thames, it is principally laid out for the sale of food. Although the bar had 2 hand pumps, there was only Doom Bar available on my visit. It has a large patio area overlooking the Thames but since it was a cold misty winter's day on my visit, there was nobody sitting outside.

30 Jan 2017 14:02

The Mill House, North Warnborough

A very unusual pub which used to be a mill house and is in beautiful surroundings which include the mill pond. The pub has a large lounge with a restaurant below it which you can see through the mezzanine floor. The old mill wheel is visible through a window inside the pub. The bar is at one end with a good range of real ales. Furniture and decor are excellent and the pub is well worth the visit.

22 Sep 2016 13:38

The Bonesgate, Chessington

This pub is now called the William Bourne

8 Sep 2016 11:59

The Queens Head, Dorking

Located at the far end of South Street, this a fairly small Fullers pub. This is a 1 room lounge pub with the bar located centrally and a pool table at the far end. Usual range of Fullers ales. Reasonably comfortable and worth a visit.

7 Sep 2016 14:51

The Cricketers, Dorking

A good honest boozer based in South Street which hasn't changed for years apart from some new/secondhand furniture. Usual selection of Fullers ales which was in good condition. The L shaped lounge has a variety of seating, from armchairs. high chairs to dining type chairs but was reasonably comfortable.

7 Sep 2016 14:46

Sir Timothy Shelley, Worthing

A medium sized Wetherspoons with a fair selection of real ales. Seating was a bit cramped but was comfortable enough. Food was the usual Wetherspoon fare.

7 Sep 2016 14:38

The Dolphin, Eastbourne

A small front lounge with a much larger rear lounge which was in use for a function when I was there. Seating was average and the food rather expensive. There was only 2 real ales available.

7 Sep 2016 14:34

Neptune, Hove

A smallish lounge with the bar tucked into one corner. A fair selection of real ales. As it was Friday evening when I was there, they had a very good group performing.

7 Sep 2016 14:32

The Cliftonville Inn, Hove

Small by Wetherspoon's standards with a rather square lounge with the bar on the left hand side. They have squeezed in the maximum amount of chairs and tables as possible making it a bit cramped. However it had the usual good selection of real ales at a very reasonable price

7 Sep 2016 14:30

The Sportsman 'Time Well Spent', Mogador

The pub has lost a lot of character following its refurbishment. I preferred the quirky decor of the old pub. It is now a foody pub rather than a drinkers haunt. Despite there is a reasonable selection of real ales and it was comfortable.

7 Sep 2016 14:27

The Old House At Home, Dorking

A large L shaped lounge with the restaurant at the far end. the bar is centrally located with a fair selection of real ales. Seating was reasonably comfortable.

7 Sep 2016 14:25

Watership Down, Freefolk Priors

This set up from the road. It has a reasonable selection of real ales including some local beers. Food, however was expensive. I had butternut squash soup which was a bit bland. The bar lounge was split by a dividing wall and the seating was mainly benches but was fairly confortable.

7 Sep 2016 14:21

The Shepherd and Flock, Farnham

Located on a roundabout, it had a beer festival when I visited so there was about a dozen beers available but it included some very ordinary beers. The seating was bit cramped due the space taken up by the barrel racking but was reasonably comfortable. I can't comment on the choice at the bar since I was only there for one drink.

7 Sep 2016 14:09

The Hope Hotel, Southend on Sea

No real ales so best avoided if you want cask ales.

7 Sep 2016 14:05

The Last Post, Southend on Sea

A large pub with entrances on 2 streets and therefore 2 bars. Although there was plenty of handpumps, the choice of real ales was poor. There was too many ciders and the regular beers taking up pumps and their choice of beer was odd. Strange tasting summer style beers. The beer and the whole pub could have been cooler. Although the weather was very warm when I was there, the other pubs in Southend were coping better. Badly needs air conditioning and coolers on the hand pump beers. There was plenty of seating with a conservatory and a patio area. The food was OK but my soup arrived lukewarm and the baguette too hot to handle.

7 Sep 2016 14:04

The Sutton Arms, Southend on Sea

Located at the far end of the high street but was not worth the walk. Although there was 2 real ales on the bar, Doom Bar and Old Golden Hen the barman was reluctant to sell either because no beer had been poured since the previous evening. Surely one of the duties of a competent barman is get the beers ready for sale each day and if that been pouring out a couple of pints to clear the lines so be it. Eventually he poured 2 pints off Old Golden hen and the resultant beer was fine. Just because the barman doesn't like real ale is no excuse for not preparing the beer for sale. If this was typical, I cannot recommend this pub to real ale lovers.

7 Sep 2016 13:55

The Falcon Hotel, Southend on Sea

A Greene King pub with Old Speckled hen and Abbot on the bar. A fairly average lounge.

7 Sep 2016 13:50

The Cornucopia, Southend on Sea

Claims to be the smallest pub in England. The lounge is certainly small with the bar squeezed into the right hand side. Even the toilets re upstairs. A limited range of draught beers and lagers and no real ale at all. It was however friendly.

7 Sep 2016 13:49

Chinnery's, Southend on Sea

A popular pub near the amusements. 3 real ales on the bar which included Wychwood Hob Goblin. It was reasonably friendly but the decor was a bit basic. There was large outside drinking area.

7 Sep 2016 13:46

The Castle, Southend on Sea

A large pub on the Western Esplanade about a half mile from the centre of Southend. It has a large lounge with comfortable armchairs. There is an upstairs mezzanine floor which is used for the restaurant. However on my 1st visit, there was only 1 real ale, Sharps Doombar but there was a second, Exmoor Gold on my next visit.

7 Sep 2016 13:43

The Britannia, Southend on Sea

This pub is currently closed.

7 Sep 2016 13:39

The Borough Hotel, Southend on Sea

A large pub near the pier and amusements. There is a large bar with a fair selection of real ales. There is a raised seating area and some seating out the front of the pub. The lounge is comfortable and the food is cheap.

7 Sep 2016 13:39

The Alex, Southend on Sea

A modern comfortable pub near the seafront. The bar is on the right of the lounge and there is a large patio area for drinking. There was a reasonable selection of real ales and it seems to be popular with young people.

7 Sep 2016 13:37

The Royal Standard, Wooburn Common

This pub has a long narrow lounge and the bar is front of you. There is a good choice of real ales and it has cheap bar food. It is long time since I have been able to buy a simple no nonsense filled roll which is served direct from the bar. Why don't pubs have food counters any more so you can see what you are eating before you order it? The lounge is a bit cramped but reasonable comfortable.

8 Dec 2015 14:10

The Royal Standard of England, Beaconsfield

This claims to be the oldest pub in Britain, dating back to the 1100s. There is a small bar in the corner with a long lounge with a cantilever roof and loads of old timbers, some decorated with dried hops. There was a good choice of real ale and the lounge was reasonably comfortable.

8 Dec 2015 13:58

The White Horse, Hedgerley

A small rural pub with a counter for a bar with the beer on stillage in the room behind it. There is blackboard which shows the beers that are available and there was a good choice of unusual real ales. The lounge was small but cosey.

8 Dec 2015 13:55

The Surrey Yeoman, Dorking

This has been recently redecorated and has new furniture which is geared for the sale of food rather comfort. Usual range of Greene King beers plus some seasonal specials. I found the furnishings a bit bare with flagstones in the bar and wooden flooring in the compact lounge.

8 Dec 2015 13:51

Red Bar and Lounge, Dorking

Located conveniently closed to the centre of the town, it has a bar which is dead ahead as you enter with the lounge circling around it. A reasonable choice of real ales, featuring, when I was there 2 from Dark Star and Wychwood Hobgoblin. Seating is comfortable and there is a conservatory and patio at the rear. I was initially put off by the name but it is worth a visit.

8 Dec 2015 13:47

The Wheatsheaf, Duxford

The post code shown above is incorrect it should be CB22 4RP. The map that is displayed is in New York, USA!

23 Aug 2015 12:24

Ye Olde Swan Inn, Thames Ditton

Located in a quiet part of Thames Ditton with a large patio area facing the river. There is a large lounge which extends around the bar which includes some excellent beer from the Old Dairy Brewery. Despite its location, it is reasonably priced. Beautiful location and well worth a visit.

10 Aug 2015 12:16

The Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower, Ashtead

This pub has reopened with new owners after being closed for at least 6 months. It has been redecorated inside and out. The bare wooden floors are now alleviated by rugs and there is an eclectic mix of furniture which blends well with the decor. There are 5 cask ales on the bar which are all well kept. Food is reasonably priced but I haven't tried any yet. It is comfortable and well worth adding back to your list of pubs to visit.

10 Aug 2015 12:13

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

This pub re-opened on May 22nd after 6 months closed for refurbishment following a change of ownership. The pub has been opened by removing some walls making a larger lounge which leads into another room which is principally a dining area. The new bar takes up far less space than the old one but there are still 5 real ales on the bar but both the beers that I had were rather flat. As the pub had only just re-opened I have put it down to teething troubles. Food was very expensive but the decor is much improved.

13 Jun 2015 15:17

The Red Lion, Thames Ditton

I decided to visit the pub as it has been nominated by the local CAMRA branch for Pub of the Year. It certainly wasn't for the beer which was only 2 rather weak beers, Hogs Back HBB (3.7%) and By the Horns Stiff upper lip (3.8%) at not equivalent cheap prices (£3.80 per pint). It wasn't for the decor since the lounge which goes right round the bar contains mainly hard wooden dining type chairs and tables apart from 2 very worn leatherette easy chairs which look like they have been rescued from a skip. It clearly is laid out for the sale of food and virtually everybody bar me was eating when I was there. I can only assume it was for the rather quirky bar made from cut down doors complete with various chipped paint, door knobs, hinges and letterboxes and the colanders used for lamp shades. The new word in the Oxford dictionary "shabby chic" seems very appropriate. It appears to be a pub run by young people for a younger clientele (20-30s).

17 Dec 2014 13:51

The Albion, Epsom

Reopened after being closed for some years. The interior, apart from redecorating and new furniture is much the same as before. There is lounge area at the front and at the rear with some seating alongside the bar which is on the right. The choice of beer was unadventurous as was the choice of food. There is a patio/yard at the back and the old stables have been turned into a self contained function room with bar.

17 Dec 2014 13:40

The Plough, Leatherhead

Located on the busy Plough roundabout about 1/2 mile from the main town. It has 2 bars , a front saloon and a rear lounge which also houses a Thia Restaurant. It has a front patio area and a garden at the rear. The park is a fair size but is an awkward shape. The front saloon is dominated by the bar and has bare floorboards and limited tables and chairs which are fairly basic. On the righthand side is a pool table and the left has a dartboard. It had 3 fairly standard real ales on the bar which were reasonably priced. It has a friendly atmosphere.

14 Aug 2014 15:33

The Symonds Well, Epsom

Formerly Symonds Wells and The Magpie before that and now called Acorn 3. The bar has been moved to the right and the lounge opened up. This has given the pub a more airy feel but has lost some of its character of the old pub. Seating is adequate and the food reasonably priced. There was only 1 real ale on the bar and was of poor quality. The pub, considering it was a bank holiday was very quiet when I was in there. Not a pub if you like your real ale

14 Aug 2014 15:27

The Wheatsheaf, Ewell

This is located just up the road from the Spring. It has no off street parking but a good shaped lounge. The seating is comfortable and is located around the edges of the room with a large bare standing area in the middle. The bar is located at the rear of the lounge and had 4 real ales on the bar including some uncommon ones. Although near the 8 Bells and despite superior seating and a better choice of beers was virtually empty. They don't appear to do food which may be the reason. It is a good choice for real ales.

14 Aug 2014 15:21

The Eight Bells, Ewell

It is located away from the centre of Ewell and is a Greene King pub which only sells Greene King IPA and Abbott although IPA is cheap at £2.69. This pub was clearly 2 rooms with the bar in the middle in the past. There was plenty of seating but it was not especially comfortable. The decor was pleasant with the usual flat screen TVs on the wall. There was a fair sized beer garden and parking was adequate. Although I didn't eat there, the prices were reasonable with a fair choice. The pub was OK but Greene King beer is not my favourite.

14 Aug 2014 15:16

The White Horse, Epsom

This pub has closed and has been boarded up. It is on the market but whether it will be sold as a pub or a site for redevelopment remains to be seen.

14 Aug 2014 15:11

The White Hart, Newenden

Although it has a fairly compact bar but had an excellent range of real ales including local beers from the nearby Rother Valley Brewery. The long thin lounge is reasonably comfortable. The food is reasonable for the money

25 Nov 2013 12:12

London and County, Eastbourne

This a Lloyds No 1 bar with 2 lounges on 2 floors. A good choice of real ales but rather expensive for a Wetherspoons. More comfortable than you typical Wetherspoons. Appears to be a young person's pub based on my visit. Can get noisy when full.

25 Nov 2013 12:09

The Duke of Devonshire, Eastbourne

A big L-shaped lounge with a bar along the left hand side. Fair choice of real ales and cheap. The lounge on the left hand side is large with comfortable seating but the other side is a bit bare. There was a very loud disco going on during my visit so I didn't stay for a second pint. You get really blasted when you go in the toilets.

25 Nov 2013 12:06

The Portsmouth Hoy, Poole

On the quayside in Poole, it is a very long deep pub with the bar on the left hand side. There is a good selection of Hall and Woodhouse beers. Seating and décor is very basic with bare wooden floors and plain wooden chairs. Not a pub for comfort. Beer is rather expensive.

25 Nov 2013 12:01

Spotted Cow, Poole

Now called the Quay. As the name suggests, this Wetherspoon is located on the quayside. The pub is very deep but the bar is relatively small. It had only 5 real ales on the bar, the least I have ever seen at a Wetherspoons. The beer I chose Sunset Red was very good. Plenty of seating and fairly comfortable.

25 Nov 2013 11:57

Bankes Arms Hotel, Corfe Castle

Located on the main road but opposite the town square, it is a traditional pub with oak beams. The compact bar is in the front when you go in and the lounge extends left and right. Seating is comfortable and the lounge is on several levels. There is a good selection of real ales but food is expensive. The bar staff are friendly.

25 Nov 2013 11:48

The Greyhound, Corfe Castle

Located on a junction with the main road and the town square, the bar is located in the centre with the lounge extending on both sides. There was a good selection of real ales including Palmer Copper Kettle that was rather expensive as was the food. Seating was comfortable and the lounge well laid out.

25 Nov 2013 11:43

The White Horse Inn, Swanage

Located near the harbour, it is a very basic booser, It has bare wooden floorboards over most of the lounge with a small raised area in one corner. The bar is at the back of the lounge and the food is reasonably priced. Seating is also basic and not built for comfort. It was rather noisy on Saturday night with a huge TV blasting away. I ate Chilli Con Carni which had an odd flavour and far from the best I have eaten.

25 Nov 2013 11:39

The White Swan, Swanage

Located right in the centre of the High street, It looks small on the outside but has a large extension at the back. It makes the lounge long and thin with a slight dogleg where a pool table is located. The décor is modern with a raised section at the far end which appears to be used mainly for food. Real ale choice is reasonable. Lasagne came with just the right quantity with chips and salad for my appetite and was clearly home-made.

25 Nov 2013 11:34

The Red Lion, Swanage

Located close to the centre of the town, it is another pub which has 2 separate bars. The right hand room appears to be for food and the left hand room just a plain bar. It is fairly basic with a scruffy carpet but a reasonable selection of real ales on the bar, including one on stillage out the back. There is a garden but it is separated by the car park. Seating wasn't very comfortable. The curry night was very good value £8.49 for a choice of 3 curries and a pint. Not quite Wetherspoon prices but reasonable nevertheless.

25 Nov 2013 11:29

The Ship, Swanage

It is located in the centre of the town, not far from the sea. The interior has bare wooden floorboards which I don't like. The bar is just offset from the front door with a large room on the right and a smaller room on the left including a raised area at the back. There were 3 real ales on the bar including 2 from the Ringwood Brewery. Seating is generally comfortable. It does a good food trade. I must be getting old but they dim the lights and put the music on rather loud after 9:30.

21 Oct 2013 11:46

The Royal British Legion, Swanage

It has a large room with the bar on the lefthand side. One half of the room is laid out with a dance floor and a stage. There are also 2 pool tables around the lefthand side of the dancing area. It has a separate room with a bar which is used for the sale of food and other things like bingo. The food is extremely good value but is only available on Friday to Sunday. The bar has 3 real ales which were cheap. The seating was reasonably comfortable. Although we were visitors we were made welcome.

21 Oct 2013 11:38

The Purbeck Hotel, Swanage

A very unusual building almost castle like in appearance. It has a very small bar in the centre which doesn't sell any draught bitter. I had a bottle of Purbeck Brewery Fossel fuel which was rather warm. The seating is variable but some of it is comfortable. Not worth a visit.

21 Oct 2013 11:33

The East Bar, Swanage

A very boring exterior but a modern comfortable interior. The bar is prominent in the centre and has 2 real ales which were reasonably priced. No food appears to be sold and was always quiet when I was in there. It has a pool table in the far corner, mainly played by the bar staff do to lack of trade. There are televisions around so is good for watching sport.

21 Oct 2013 11:29

The Black Swan Inn, Swanage

Apparently the oldest pub in Swanage, it is located a little out of the town centre. The pub is split into 2 rooms with their own bars. Very rare these days. The righthand bar is designated a family room. The left hand room has a small bar in the corner with 3 real ales. There are flagstones on the floor and large brick fireplace. Must be very homely in the winter when it is lit. There are separate wooden tables and chairs so doesn't score very highly on comfort. Toilets are a bit of an anachronism since they are outside but at least they are clean. Food is rather expensive but similar to other pubs in the town. Very friendly though and the pub dog will keep you amused for hours!

21 Oct 2013 11:24

The Anchor Inn, Swanage

Ii is in the middle of the town but has a rather austere interior - bare floorboards etc. The lounge is long and wide but the seating is very basic - hard wooden seats. They had 3 real ales on the bar and the food is rather expensive for a scruffy pub. However the roast beef on Sunday was excellent value at £6.95.

21 Oct 2013 11:17

The Claret Wine Bar, Cheam Village

A small wine bar close to the centre of Cheam. It is quite narrow with the bar on the left hand side. The bar had 5 hand pumps selling almost exclusively Cornish beer. There is hard wooden seating along the side of the bar. There is a raised are at the back with a small alcove and 3 tables and chairs. There is a glass roof above. There is a lot of wood but I suspect most of it is fake.

19 Aug 2013 15:28

Ye Olde Red Lion, Cheam

A bit of a tardis of a pub, bigger on the inside than the outside. The bar is in the centre of the pub and the lounge circles it 360 degrees. They had a fair range of real ales. My first pint, Brakespear Bitter was the end of the barrel and a bit sour but they changed it without a quibble for another Brakespear beer - Oxford Gold which was fine. My next beer was Dorking Late Red which could have been colder but it was the first out. It must be in the same menu as The Brewery in Ashtead even down to the prices. It has a large patio out the back.

19 Aug 2013 15:23

The Dukes Head, Tadworth

Located on the Dorking Road in Tadworth. A large car park wraps itself around the pub with the beer garden, which is partly covered in the middle. The bar is along the length of the pub on the left. It has 6 real ales including one special for the pub. The lounge which curves around the bar is well laid out and comfortable. It was doing a good trade on food but I wasn't eating so I can't comment on the quality.

19 Aug 2013 15:15

The Blue Anchor, Tadworth

A large pub with plenty of parking. It is a large spacious lounge with good quality comfortable furniture. The bar is at the far end and has 2 real ales on the bar. The far left of the lounge is laid out for the sale of food. The pub is a bit lacking in character and souless. There is an outside patio area around the edge of the pub. There is spotless toilets.

19 Aug 2013 15:10

Nonsuch Inn, North Cheam

A typical Wetherspoons but smaller than most. The bar is located along the right hand wall with seating on the other side, including cubicles on the left hand side and far walls. It has 2 sets of 6 handpumps in the usual Wetherspoon's fashion. The far ones have the regular beers and the other the specials. The beer was good but could have been cooler. It was very popular and therefore rather noisey.

19 Aug 2013 14:59

The Bear, Oxshott

I thought the Victoria down the road was expensive but I was well and truly mugged in this pub. £4.29 for a pint of Shere Drop - that's outrageous! The pub is OK with a large 2 level balcony but the lounge is rather plain. It has a good range of Young's beers. However none of it justifies the extortionate prices. A pub to be avoided unless you have more money than sense.

1 Jun 2013 11:58

The Victoria, Oxshott

A traditional pub in the centre of Oxshott. It has limited parking but some outside seating. The small lounge leads to a larger room to the left. The bar had 4 real ales but the choice wasn't very adventurous and expensive at £3.86 a pint. Too expensive for my tastes.

1 Jun 2013 11:54

The Fox and Hounds, Walton On The Hill

This pub re-opened a year or so ago. It is a good down to earth pub. The bar is central and the lounge wraps around it. The seating and decor is serviceable and OK. They had 3 real ales on the bar but the one I chose ran out. It was a good thing because the bit I tasted was particularly sour. I therefore had Sharps Doombar. I ordered a cheese and tomato sandwich was particularly good value. It had a huge slab of bread with about 1/2 pound of cheese in it plus fries and side salad and only £4.50.

The Coronation Hall, Surbiton

Went here for a mini beer festival featuring London beers. I arrived early lunchtime but already 4 pumps were bent over - no beer on those pumps. Of the remaining 8 pumps, 4 were being used to sell Greene King Abbott and IPA. Of the remaining 4 pumps, 2 had non beer festival beers. I chose 1 of the 2 remaining but by the time I wanted a second, that second pump too was bent over. Doesn't Wetherspoon teach staff how to change barrels, the pub wasn't that busy? Early lunchtime and 5 of 12 pumps out of action. That is not the way to run pubs. What is the point of advertising a mini beer festival if only 1 beer is available. This pub used to offer a good range of beers but in recent years I have been disappointed with the beers available. I will not use this pub again for mini or twice yearly national beer festivals and I will recommend others to go elsewhere.

The Greyhound, Weston Green

A large Tudor style pub just to the side of the green. A traditional interior with plenty of wood paneling and separate chairs and tables with a bay window pew. The lounge is L-shaped with a pool table on the extreme right. Bar had 5 handpumps but only 3 beers on when I was there which included 2 Christmas ales. Beer was rather expensive. Food was reasonably priced but a rather boring selection. Difficult to comment on ambiance since I was the only one in the pub! May be better in the evening or in the summer.

5 Jan 2013 14:36

The Ewe, Weston Green

Located just on the edge of the green. The first part is the lounge with the carvery restaurant on the left. There is a bare black tiled floor and a plain painted bar which gives it the impression of a cafe than a pub - not very inviting. Part of the bar is a food servery area and there was 4 handpumps on the bar but only 1 was available, Sharps Doombar when I was there. Seating is adequate but again laid out cafe style in rows. A pub for eating rather than drinking.

5 Jan 2013 14:31

The Cricketers on the Green, Weston Green

This pub is currently closed and has a to let sign pinned to the outside.

5 Jan 2013 14:24

The White Horse, Maplehurst

A nice country pub with a small brick fronted bar but an excellent range of real ales. Seating is a bit basic with long rectangular tables. Apparently it has an extensive garden but I didn't see it since I arrived at night with a coach party.

3 Dec 2012 15:19

The Hare and Hounds, Cowfold

A nice country pub with a central bar with a brick frontage and stone flagstones on the floor. The lounge is long and thin and the seating is rather basic. There was an excellent range of real ales including a good pint of Darkstar Chestnut Brown Ale. There is a separate carpeted dining area but since I wasn't eating, I can't comment on the food. It is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide and is worth seeking out.

3 Dec 2012 15:16

The Hand in Hand, Boxhill

A large pub on the top of Box Hill. There is a large lounge with the bar on the left which had 4 hand pumps though only 3 had beers on. The lounge is very comfortably laid out with leather sofas and chairs and a real log fire. The far end of the lounge is laid out for food and there is another large room behind the bar. It has bare flagstones throughout which gives it a bit of a country kitchen look. There is a large garden on the right which I couldn't try because it was pissing with rain when I was there. Wee worth a visit.

17 Nov 2012 14:46

The Eagle, Eastbourne

As you enter the pub, you are confronted with a large area with an odd assortment of furniture laid out in a rather haphazard fashion. The bar had 4 handpumps but only 2 real ales when I was there but they were unusual and from local brewers. At the far end there is a pool table. Although it was Saturday night, I felt that the music was over loud and not very pleasant, causing customers to almost shout to be heard. As a result the noise levels were rather high and it was not very relaxing.

11 Oct 2012 13:41

The Running Horses, Mickleham

A picturesque pub opposite Mickleham church. Main lounge feels like 2 rooms although you can freely walk between them. The bar is in the lefthand side and had 5 real ales on the bar. There was large fireplace on the left covered on horse brasses which must be very pleasant in winter. The seating is mainly of the church pew type which is functional but hardly very comfortable. There is a separate restaurant on the left of the main lounge. It does a lot of food trade. Staff are very neatly dressed and are very courteous. Beer was in good condition and nice and cold but rather expensive.

11 Oct 2012 13:35

The Swan Inn and Lodge, Claygate

A quaint pub about 10 minutes walk from the station and located opposite a small green. It is decorated with plenty of flowers and hanging baskets. The bar is L-shaped with bare wooden floors in the lounge. The lefthand side is set up for drinking and the smaller righthand side for food. Although the bar had 4 handpumps. there was only 2 beers on the bar, both Fullers. There was a beer festival outside at the time so that might have been deliberate. Seating is adequate but hardly salubrious. There is a small garden out the bar.

11 Oct 2012 13:29

Watermill Inn, Dorking

Located about a mile out of Dorking on the road to Reigate. The car park extends on both sides of the pub but uses a surface of pebbles which is not ideal for my motorbike. The bar is central with large lounges on both sides. There is an outside area to sit in the front and another larger patio at the rear of the pub which has splendid views to Box Hill and the North Downs. They had 3 regular beers and 3 guests, once of which was a cider. It does an excellent food trade despite prices which are higher than normal. Worth an occasional visit, especially in summer.

14 Aug 2012 14:46

The Symonds Well, Epsom

This is now closed for refurbishment and will reopen in September as the Acorn30

21 Jul 2012 10:37

The Cricketers, Dorking

Although it must be almost 20 years since my last visit, nothing has changed. Even the seating looks original. As for the easy chairs, I have seen better ones in skips! On a positive note, the beer was good with 3 Fullers beers and 1 guest. The pub was also friendly and had a good atmosphere. It has no car park so you have to use the street or public car parks.

21 Jul 2012 10:35

The Crab Inn, Shanklin

A very unusual thatched pub in the middle of Shanklin old village. The lounge is on various levels and initially it is difficult to find the bar! There is loads of comfortable seating but the bar only had 2 real ales but one was a local beer Goddard's Scrumdiggity Ale.

6 Jul 2012 13:30

The Steamer Inn, Shanklin

Located halfway along the sea front, the pub has a large outside area which part of it is covered. It has a large bar with a nautical theme and a good range of beers including the local beer Goddard's Fuggle-dee-dum. Food was a bit expensive for a tourist bar. Seating is more laid for the sale of food than drinking but was reasonably comfortable.

6 Jul 2012 13:27

The Dairymans Daughter, Arreton

A pub in the middle of the complex which is the old village of Arreton. It has a large long lounge and the bar has a very good range of real ales, including Goddards Ale of Wight. The lounge is unusual with its stone flagstones and assorted nik naks. Seating varies from booths to separate chairs and tables. A pub for the tourists.

6 Jul 2012 12:21

The Castle Hotel, Newport

The oldest pub in Newport located at one end of the High Street. As you enter, there is a large brick built fireplace facing you and stone flagstones on the floor with the small bar to the right. Seating comprises wooden benches plus separate wooden chairs. There is also a room at the back and a garden. Food was reasonably priced. There were 3 real ales which included Oyster Ale.

6 Jul 2012 12:16

The Old Manor House, Lake

A pub located in the middle of Lake. It has a long thin lounge with the bar alongside it. The seating was in need of repair and/or cleaning. It was however comfortable. It had 3 handpumps but only 1 real ale, Charles Wells Eagle. There is another room at the other side of the bar which has a pool table.

6 Jul 2012 12:12

The Spyglass Inn, Ventnor

A really quaint old pub at the far end of the esplanade. There is a large balcony on the outside with a great view of the beach. The small bar is in 1 corner with a number of small rooms around it. It is laid out in a nautical fashion with a pirate theme. Due to the low ceilings and small windows, it is rather dark inside but it was a dull day when I was there. Seating is variable with stone flags on the floor. It had an excellent range of real ales including a number of local brews. A unique pub that is a must if you are in Ventnor.

6 Jul 2012 11:43

The Tap, Sandown

A very spartan bar which feels more a sports club. Bare floorboards throughout but seating is not too bad. The large lounge has 3 fruit machines, a pool table and a football machine. It also had a very large flat screen tv and a projector screen plus another screen in the other lounge area. Its only saving grace was that the beer was cheap but not of a very high quality.

6 Jul 2012 11:38

Scruffy Jacks, Sandown

A very basic bar on the pier. The decor and the seating was functional but the drinks were very cheap. No real ale but that was expected for this type of bar. Only worth a quick visit.

6 Jul 2012 11:34

Flanagans, Sandown

A restaurant which overlooks the pier. It is a wedge shaped lounge which is comfortable with leather seats. It has bare wooden floorboards which I don't really like. It had 1 real ale, Black Sheep Bitter. The lounge has good views and the food was reasonable.

6 Jul 2012 11:32

Caulkheads, Sandown

A large prominent pub on the far side of the town. A large lounge which is basically L-shaped with a central bar. Although the bar featured 4 handpumps, it only had 1 real ale, the very common Sharp's Doombar. Quality of beer could have been better. Seating is plentiful and generally comfortable. Food is very reasonably priced and of high quality. I had a good homemade chicken and ham pie. Helpings were very generous. A pub for eating rather than drinking.

6 Jul 2012 11:29

The Old Comical, Sandown

A real old spit and polish boozer but with plenty of character. Bare wooden floorboards and hard wooden seats abound but it doesn't seem to matter. A choice of 2 real ales with 1 unused pump. No food but still worth a visit.

6 Jul 2012 11:24

The Castle, Sandown

A back street boozer that features a large l-shaped lounge and a central bar. There are large flat screen tvs on both sides of the pub. Floor is mostly carpeted and the seating which includes a couple of sofas is reasonably comfortable. There are a few unusual beers on the bar, including some local IOW beers. The pub seems mainly frequented by locals rather than tourists. The castle theme is carried on in the lounge with loads of oddments; shields, axes, suits of armour, a portcullis etc!

6 Jul 2012 11:19

The Ocean Deck, Sandown

A seaside fronted pub based on 3 levels with a strong nautical theme throughout. There is an outside decking area, a conservatory level and finally the bar level. The furnishing is relatively bare and not especially comfortable. It had 3 real ales, 2 from Ringwoods. It does a good food trade and the Sunday carvery is worth a visit as it is good value and well cooked.

6 Jul 2012 11:12

The Kings Head, Yarmouth

A traditional pub in the centre of the town. The bar is in the centre with 2 lounges on either side. 3 real ales on the bar but a rather predictable selection. Seating includes large sofas and wooden chairs with large wooden tables. Lounge has a large stone fireplace. Food is reasonable but the main menu items are rather dear.

6 Jul 2012 10:41

The Fountain Inn, Sandown

This pub was closed during the week we were staying in Sandown. I don't know whether this is permanent.

3 Jul 2012 14:35

The Pilgrim, Dorking

Located near West Dorking station, it has a fair sized car park in front. The central bar has 4 real ales, including Sharps Doombar, Ringwood Best Bitter and Old Thumper. The lounge stretches around both sides of the bar, the large area on the left seems reserved for food. There is a very mixed assortment of furniture including church pews, sofas and padded wooden wall seating. Even the flooring varies, carpeting in the food area, wood opposite the bar and stone flags in the righthand bar lounge. Seating was generally comfortable and the pub has a good atmosphere.

3 Jul 2012 14:31

The Watchman, New Malden

A new Wetherspoons pub built in an old Police Station on the major roundabout at the end of New Malden High Street. There is a small patio at the front of the pub. When you enter, the modern aluminium bar is front of you with a large eating area to the right and a smaller carpeted lounge to the left with high seating dead in front. Curiously there is a narrow seating area directly behind the bar. It has the usual excellent range of real ales. The pub is comfortable with a modern dcor and should be added to your list of pubs. It is however a little dearer than other Wetherspoons.

3 Jul 2012 14:26

The Windsor Castle, Carshalton

Located on a very busy crossroads about 1/2 mile from the main shopping area. It is a traditional pub with oak panelling on the walls and a centrally located bar with plenty of bar stools around it. A good selection of real ales 3 from Shephards and Neame and the food was reasonably priced. Seating was comfortable. There is a patio area behind the pub with a separate building called the Cottage Room where a beer festival was taking place.

3 Jul 2012 14:20

The Hope, Carshalton

A small pub near the railway station which is a Camra pub of the year. The lounge is simply furnished and rather narrow so the bar dominates. For the size of the pub it had a very reasonable range of 6 real ales which are changed regularly. It is run as a co-operative and has a friendly atmosphere. They have a simple range of food but had stopped serving by the time I got there.

3 Jul 2012 14:16

The Anchor, Bookham

Situated about 1/2 mile from the main shopping centre. Inside the low ceilings and small windows makes it rather dark. The small lounge warps around a central bar with a very traditional decor that includes plenty of wood and a large fireplace. Seating is of the church pew type with cushions and is reasonably comfortable. There is a small patio out front and a useful shaped car park. good selection of real ales including Skinners Cornish Knocker which was very nice. Well worth a visit.

29 Jun 2012 16:40

The Crown, Bookham

Situated in the middle of Bookham, it has fair sized lounge with leather sofas at the far end. It has mostly wooden floors which gives it a rather austere appearance. Seating is reasonably comfortable but is plain. The bar which is on the right hand side of the lounge has 3 hand pumps but only 1 beer available, Fullers London Pride which could have been colder. Pub looks rather rundown and shabby so could do with a major refurbishment. The food is reasonably priced but wasn't tried. There is also a large garden and patio area at the back.

29 Jun 2012 16:34

The Cock Inn, Headley

Located in a prominent position in the quiet village of Headley. There is a large car park with steps leading up to the pub. There is a small garden area to the right. It is a one room pub with the bar at the far end. It has waist high partitioning on the right to segregate the dining area and a further fenced raised area on the right also mainly used for food. It is very well kitted out in predominantly cream and grey. The seating in the central area is very comfortable. They had 3 real ales but the choice was rather unadventurous i.e. London Pride, Courage Best and Greene King IPA. Although it does a strong food trade, it is still worth a visit if you are only drinking.

23 Mar 2012 11:19

Old Plough, Stoke D'Abernon

The only pub in Stoke D'abernon that is on the road to Cobham. It has a fair sized patio and garden area. The manager must be a keen gardener because it is well kept and there are plenty of pot plants dotted around. The bar is in the bar lounge but extends into the extension but that has no pumps. The bar lounge is quite small but the extension almost doubles the size though it is mainly used for the sale of food. There is a good selection of real ales including Surrey Hills Shere Drop, Sambrook Junction, Sharps Cornish Coaster and Harveys Best Bitter when I was there. Although it was winter for my visit, it would make an excellent pub for the summer.

23 Mar 2012 11:11

The Kings Tun, Kingston Upon Thames

A large Wetherspoons pub on the one way system. It has a large oblong lounge with a partition wall about 2/3rd down and the bar on the left. There is another smaller bar upstairs. Most of the seating is geared towards the sale of food but is comfortable nevertheless. It rather lacks character. It has an excellent range of 12 real ales. It can get rather busy and service sometimes can be rather slow but it is still well worth a visit.

23 Mar 2012 11:04

The Falkland Arms, Dorking

A Young's pub at the far end of the town, not far from the A24. The lounge is split into 2, one carpeted and one bare wooden flooring but both are comfortable. A fair selection of Young's beers plus St Austell Tribute. It was very quiet when I was there so it is difficult to comment on the atmosphere.

16 Feb 2012 14:15

The Prince Of Wales, Dorking

A small one room pub at the far side of the town, not far from the A24. The brick built bar is on the lefthand side with seating in front and to the side which includes a fruit machine. At the back of the pub is a gaming area with a pool table and dartboard. There were 3 real ales on the bar, including Caledonian Double Black. It is a local's pub but is friendly and inviting. It is also comfortable and worth a visit.

16 Feb 2012 14:07

The Marquis of Granby, Epsom

Located at the southern end of the High Street, it has a square shaped lounge with the bar largely in the centre. It is rather dingy inside, made worse by the dark paint on the walls and the low ceilings. It seems a friendly pub and the lounge is comfortable. It had 3 cask ales when I was in there, London Pride, Doom Bar and Sambrook Wandle Ale. The latter was very pleasant. Food seemed a little expensive but I wasn't eating so I couldn't comment on its value for money.

20 Dec 2011 15:11

The Spring Tavern, Ewell

An Ember Inn pub located at a crossroads just out of Ewell high street. It has a very odd shaped and small car park. The bar is more or less in the centre of the pub with the lounges wrapped around it. It is comfortable and well laid out in the typical Ember Inn's style but has a rather boring food menu. The real ale choice varies but is reasonable but it is quite expensive for an Ember Inn. There is a small patio outside, if you don't mind all the traffic going past.

27 Oct 2011 14:26

The Druid's Head, Kingston Upon Thames

Located in the Market Square, it has quite a small frontage but goes back a long way. The bar is on the right as you come in and has 6 real ale pumps. The lounge is well laid out and very comfortable. It has a patio area on the side and another room in the corner of that. The food menu had a good choice at fair prices. I was there for the Summer beer festival which had a good range of golden style beers served by a very friendly barmaid. Well worth a visit.

27 Oct 2011 14:21

The Dolphin, Betchworth

An old pub in a very rural part of Betchworth. Oak beams and wood panelling abound. The lounge is surprisingly large and wraps around the bar. The front bar has stone slabs and the back lounge has bare floorboards. It has a good selection of Youngs beers, including Waggledance and Charles Wells Bombardier. A pub with real character and well worth a visit.

27 Oct 2011 14:17

The Star, Ewell

An unusual pub with 2 rooms at the front of the pub with the bar well set back in the middle. The front lounges are comfortable but the bar area is a bit sparce for my taste. There is a raised area at the back with a pool table. They only had 2 real ales but they were Hall & Woodhouse Badger and Tanglefoot which were very good. It was bit quiet when I was there but it was mid afternoon.

27 Oct 2011 14:12

The Bell Inn, Cheam

A good sized pub just out of the centre of the town. The car park is adequate. The lounge is L-shaped, the left is reserved for pool and darts and the other side has a well laid out and comfortable lounge. Normally it has 2 real ales but only Sharps Doombar was on when I was there. However it is a good beer so I wasn't complaining! Although I wasn't eating the food seems reasonably priced. A nice friendly ambience and it is weel worth a visit.

27 Oct 2011 14:07

The Fountain, New Malden

A large imposing pub located on a large roundabout at the end of New Malden High Street. It has a large L-shaped lounge with a generous sized bar. The lounge has comfortable seating and pleasant decor. A fair selection of real ales. I had a beer from Purity which was very citrusy and not to my taste. However the pub is well worth a visit.

27 Oct 2011 14:02

Bar Malden, New Malden

A very non descript pub from the outside which is located near the station. A fair sized bar with a large comfortable lounge. It was rather quiet when I was in there on a mid Saturday afternoon. There was a reasonable selection of real ales on the bar.

27 Oct 2011 13:58

The Royal Oak, Tolworth

A grotty pub inside and out, located at the far end of the broadway. On the far left is a pool table area with stone flag stones and the remainder of the L-shaped lounge is carpeted. All the decor looked very tired. The bar, although had 3 hand pumps only had Courage bitter available. On the more positive note, I overheard a conversation that there is a new manager and the pub is to be "redone". It certainly needs it. My visit was back in August so the pub may now be much better. I will revisit sometime to check it out.

27 Oct 2011 13:55

The Brewery Inn, Ashtead

This has recently been redecorated inside and out. The old gold lettering has gone, replaced by a white on black signs similar to the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower. All the furniture has been replaced inside with standard sized tables and chairs so there is a lot more seating room than before. All vestigates of Ember Inn's decor has been removed. Even the pumps have been tidied up, the spare handpumps have gone and new T-bars are used for the lagers and cider. The coffee machine has moved to the other side of the bar. Beer choice is fair but a bit boring. Food menu similarly has all items on the safe side, there is nothing spicey i.e. curry. However, overall the improvements are worthwhile and it is still my favourite Ashtead pub.

13 Jul 2011 15:02

The Blenheim, Epsom

Large pub in a basically residential area. The bar is in the middle with large rooms either side. The lefthand side appears to be reserved for sports i.e. darts and pool while the righthand side has basic wooden chairs and tables. Bare floorboards abound. Very poor utilisation is made of the space available. It feels more like an old style public bar and is not very inviting. There is no real ale only Greene King IPA smooth - yuck! It is not worth even a casual visit.

13 Jul 2011 14:55

The Dolphin, Betchworth

An old pub in a very rural part of Betchworth. Oak beams and wood panelling abound. There are stone flag stones in the front bar and bare floorboards elsewhere. The lounge is deceptively large wrapping itself around the bar. A good selection of Youngs beers, including Waggledance and Charles Wells Bombardier. A pub with real character - well worth a visit.

13 Jul 2011 14:50

The Kings Arms, Epsom

Located on the road going out of Epsom towards Ewell. It has a large car park at the side. The front lounge is for drinkers while the upper part is primarily for food. There is also a large decking area in the garden. It has the usual range of Young's beers plus 1 guest ale, St Austell Tribute when I was there. Seating the front lounge is very comfortable.

6 Jul 2011 15:46

The Ramblers Rest, Chipstead

A clapperboard built pub which has obviously been modified and expanded several times. The restaurant is in the old part of the pub while the bar and lounge is in the newer part. Seating is comfortable and the bar is modern looking. A fair selection of real ales; Sharps Doombar, Fullers London Pride and St Austell Tribute. There is also a large patio at the rear of the pub. There is a small car park at the front but a much larger one at the rear. This is clearly a pub that derives most of its revenue from the food trade.

6 Jul 2011 15:42

The Tanronnen Inn, Beddgelert

A small pub in the centre of the town not far from the bridge over the river. It has a small bar and comfortable lounge but no hand pumped beer. They did have Robinson's Double Hop, Crusoe and Unicorn on keg.

2 Jul 2011 15:24

The London Hotel, Llandudno

From the outside, it looks more like a restaurant than a pub but it has an excellent range of Marston's beers. The lounge is deep with the bar on the lefthand side. Seating is more geared to the eating of food than relaxing with a pint but was average.

2 Jul 2011 15:22

The Carlton, Llandudno

This is a large pub in the centre of the town, not too far from It the pier. It has a large saloon bar with the bar at one end. It has the look and feel of a Wetherspoon's pub with similar deals on their food. There was an average selection of real ale including Thwaites Lancaster Bomber, Tetley's Bitter and Marston's EPA. Both food and drink were cheap and good value. The seating was plentiful and comfortable.

2 Jul 2011 15:19

The Kings Head, Llandudno

Apparently the oldest pub in Lllandudno which located next door to the tramway to the Great Orme. The bar is in the centre of the pub with the lounge going all the way round at various levels. The one in the far corner is the restaurant. They had a good selection of real ale but it was rather pricey, as was the food. The soup, however was very good. It was very friendly and the decor was traditional.

2 Jul 2011 15:14

Blue Bell Inn, Conwy

An old pub located in the centre of the town. It has a large barn of a lounge with the bar in front of you as you enter. It has been laid out to take as many people standing as possible. The round the wall seating is on 3 sides with one corner only having stools. This area is used for entertainment which was on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There was a good selection of real ale from small independent breweries which was changed regularly. This included North Wales Brewery Moeffre IPA, Castle Rock Preservation Ale and Butcombe Brewery Mendip Spring. It didn't serve food after 7pm which was a bummer.

2 Jul 2011 15:09

The Malt Loaf, Conwy

A pub located near the railway. It looks much better on the outside than inside which was very disappointing. It looked more like a sports club with pool tables when we first walk in and a darts area in the other corner. It was sparsely laid out and not very inviting. Desperately needs redecorating. There was only 1 real ale; Brain's SA and it didn't sell food.

2 Jul 2011 15:02

The Bridge Inn, Conwy

Located opposite the castle. It had recently re-opened after a complete refurb and still smelt of fresh paint. It has been tastefully decorated with comfortable seating. It had 2 Banks' beers; Mild and Bitter plus Marston's Pedigree. The mild which was very nice looked and tasted like a normal session bitter. They didn't do any form of food.

2 Jul 2011 14:55

Ye Old Mail Coach, Conwy

A pub that can be very noisy if you go in on a Friday or Saturday. It has comfortable seating with a raised area at the back of the pub. Poor choice of real ales, only Greene King IPA on my first visit but Marston's Pedigree had been added for my later visits.

2 Jul 2011 14:51

The Castle Hotel, Conwy

This is a hotel based bar in the middle of the town. The bar which is located to the right of the restaurant is quite small but to it's credit sells local Conwy beer; Welsh Pride, Beachcomber Blond and Rampart. All were very pleasant but rather bland. The beers could have been colder. Even though there was a restaurant, almost everybody on the bar was eating. Food was very expensive and even the beer was the dearest in the town. It felt more like a posh club with all the waiters than a pub so it was not really to my taste.

2 Jul 2011 14:47

The George and Dragon, Conwy

Located in the middle of the town, the lounge is long and thin with the bar on the righthand side. There is a garden at the rear. There is another room on the other side which is set up as restaurant. The seating is reasonably comfortable It has 3 rather ordinary real ales; Speckled Hen, Bass and Green King IPA. Food was well priced with large helpings. It could get rather noisy at times when it filled up.

2 Jul 2011 14:40

The Liverpool Arms, Conwy

I totally disagree with the comments of smellybelly. I used it several times when I was on holiday in Conwy and it was not dirty and the staff were very courteous. I didn't see any dogs. It has a good location on the side of the estuary but the bar is small with limited seating. They had 2 real ales on, Brains SA and Bass.

2 Jul 2011 14:35

The Britannia Inn, Halkyn

A reasonable size pub off the busy A55 into North Wales. A small bar with 2 J.W. Lees beers; Bitter and Game on but there was plenty of comfortable seating in rooms around the bar. The food was reasonable and cheap, as was the beer. It has a large patio area with good views across the Dee estuary.

2 Jul 2011 14:30

The Old Bear, Cobham

Located at the entry to the high street. This pub is a glorified restaurant. The bar is drab with plain wood flooring and grey woodwork and walls. It is not particularly inviting to drinkers. The bar is dead ahead as you enter with all the tables to the left set out for food. There is a limited lounge to the right of the bar plus another area for food. There was an average selection of real ales which were rather pricey. It may be worthwhile considering for a meal but for a drink - forget it!

2 Jul 2011 14:26

The Running Mare, Cobham

A basic boozer located on the outskirts of Cobham. A pokey lounge located around an over large central bar. An average selection of real ales but at above average prices. Seating and decor do not justify the high bar prices.

2 Jul 2011 14:21

Ashtead Village Club, Ashtead

A private members club located in the northern end of the upper shopping area of Ashtead. It is long and thin with the main lounge in the front half which also has the fruit machine and a large screen TV. Midway there are stairs which go up to the Games Room, which has 3 Billiard tables, a pool table and darts. There is another pool table on the dance floor in the main lounge. At the far end of the ground floor is the bar and the bar lounge which furnished in different colours to differentiate it from the main lounge. They have 4 real ales, Youngs Bitter and Special, Sharps Doombar and Courage Bitter. All are well kept. They also have good selection of lagers and cider. Off the bar lounge is a patio area and a smoker's shelter. Drinks are cheaper than pubs but doesn't do food apart from rolls. Seating is very comfortable and the atmosphere is very friendly.

28 Jun 2011 15:36

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

The main saloon bar has been redecorated with all new furniture since my last visit last summer and it is a vast improvement. They had 4 real ales on the bar when I was there and I tried 3 of them which were very good. Unfortunately the food service was very poor. It took 1.5 hours to get our food! It was a good thing we weren't in a rush. However they were very apologetic and it was a Easter Monday. Still worth coming for a drink but I might think twice about ordering food.

26 Apr 2011 15:30

The Star, Malden Rushett

Usefully located near junction 9 of the M25 and Chessington World of Adventures. However over the years, it has become progressively a restaurant with very few seat for drinkers. The beer is expensive but choice is reasonable Sharps Doombar & Cornish Coaster and Courage Directors. Doombar is becoming more common than London Pride in pubs nowadays. Food is very expensive and I didn't try it. It is only worth a visit if you eating and you have deep pockets.

26 Apr 2011 15:22

The Cricketers, Cobham

A pub located in a quiet part of Cobham. It is very quaint with oak beams, low ceilings and little cubby holes everywhere. The bar is more or less in the middle with a food serving area at the end on the left. It was doing a roaring trade in food when I was there (Good Friday) but it looked your typical pub fare i.e. door step sandwiches and burgers. Beer was good, Fullers London Pride, Greene King IPA and Speckled Hen but was rather expensive. It has a garden area located by a large village green. It would make a pleasant summer evening pub.

23 Apr 2011 15:01

The Plough, Cobham

A small country pub located in a quiet part of Cobham. The pub is not very deep but quite wide with the bar directly in front of you when you go in. There is a food serving area to the left of the bar. Courage Bitter, Sharps Doombar and Hogs Back Spring Ale were on the bar when I was there. The Spring ale could have been colder but otherwise was pleasant. Comfortable lounge and quite homely. There is also a garden area next to the smallish car park.

23 Apr 2011 14:54

The Faraday, Epsom

A large pub at the bottom of Church Street. It is one big room with the bar roughly central. Reasonably comfortable and airy lounge but not much ambience. A fair range of beers which included Youngs Bitter, Charles Wells Bombardier and Sharps Doombar when I was there. There is also an upstairs area which doesn't appear to be used.

14 Apr 2011 15:02

The Star, Dorking

The smallest pub in Dorking, right at the bottom of West Street. It has a kidney shaped lounge with the bar in the middle. The righthand side has a raised stage area with church pew type seating on one side, contrasting with an orange sofa on the other side. The other side has 3 sofas. It is a Green King pub which serves a nice pint of their IPA. Worth a visit.

17 Feb 2011 14:01

The Kings Arms, Dorking

An old pub in West Street. Oak beams and low ceilings abound. The lounge wraps around the bar with a smaller room behind the bar. There is also a patio out the back. It is a Shephard and Neame's pub but does have guest ales. The decor is traditional and the seating is reasonably comfortable. It has plenty of character and is a nice pub for a quiet drink.

17 Feb 2011 13:58

The White Horse, Shere

An old pub in the middle of the picturesque village of Shere. Oak beams abound and the small lounge is on 3 levels. It does a good food trade which looked good but I wasn't eating. It had 3 real ales i.e. Spitfire, Tea and Doombar. A nice atmosphere in a very pleasant setting.

17 Feb 2011 13:54

The William Bray , Shere Guildford Surrey

A large pub which sits above it's patio which was previously a car park. There is a large garden at the rear. The rooms are large with a high ceilings with a large mirror dominating the back of the bar. It was selling a good range of Surrey Hills Brewery beers including Shere Drop and Ranmore Ale. Seating was comfortable.

17 Feb 2011 13:52

The Buccaneer, Eastbourne

This pub is located next door to the Winter Gardens. The lounge looks small at first but extends well past the bar. Seating is reasonably comfortable with a good range of real ales including a Buccaneer Ale. It has a good atmosphere and is weel worth a visit.

17 Feb 2011 13:48

The Cavalier, Eastbourne

A curious pub not far from the Winter Gardens. As you walk through the door, you are presented with a food area which makes the pub look scruffy. It is comfortable with a central bar and a pool table on a raised area at the rear of the lounge. A good selection of real ales including Brakespear, Courage, Harveys and Hobgoblin.

17 Feb 2011 13:45

The Edward Rayne, Raynes Park

A modern Wetherspoon pub opposite Raynes Park station. Roughly square in shape with the largish bar on the righthand side. Plenty of very comfortable seating in pleasant surroundings. Over 9 handpumps offering the usual good choice of real ale - majoring on Hammerpot Brewery beer when I was there. Parking in the area is not good but it is still recommended.

17 Feb 2011 13:42

The Old Lifeboat House, Clacton on Sea

A small pub just to the side of the main shopping area. It is a one room pub which has obviously been converted from something else - possibly a lifeboat house? The decor is basic but it feels more like a club than a pub. It appears to be used by locals rather than tourists. It had 2 real ales on the bar which were reasonable.

10 Sep 2010 11:52

The Moon and Starfish, Clacton On Sea

A large Wetherspoons pub opposite the pier. It has large L-shaped lounge which is laid out primarily for serving food to tourists who fill the place at lunchtime. Food service can be slow and they are bad at clearing the debris afterwards. It is quieter in the evening when the daytrippers have gone home. It has a reasonable choice of real ales including a very nice pint of Old Hooky when I was in there for their curry night which is still brilliant value for money. It is not however a pub I would choose for a quiet relaxing drink.

10 Sep 2010 11:47

Ye Olde Windsor Castle, Bookham

A small pub which has had some recent internal changes. The bar is now in one corner with tables and chairs in the lounge. It has a good trade in food. seating is adequate. I was there for a beer festival which was in a marquee at the front of the pub. They had 30 beers which were in good condition - at least the 8 that I tried. Lounge has plenty of oak beams which look genuine. Well worth a visit but it is a long walk from the station.

22 Jun 2010 20:07

The Fox and Hounds, Walton On The Hill

This pub has recently reopened as a gastro pub and it shows! The food is very expensive - 14 for posh liver and bacon and there is no cheaper bar snacks. The bar itself is fairly spartan with bare wooden floors and basic dining room type chairs. Not the most comfortable pub and it doesn't encourage an extended session. Although it had 3 handpumps they only had Fullers London Pride and Greene King IPA on when I was there. Prices are competitive for the area.

22 Jun 2010 20:03

Harts Boatyard, Surbiton

This pub has been repackaged as a gastro pub. The layout is the same but the furnishings look new. The bar on the ground floor had no real ale on my visit despite pumps on the bar. The main restaurant is upstairs. The food is a cut above the previous fare when it was a beefeater pub. Service was a bit slow but it was just before Christmas. A place for eating rather than drinking despite its location on the banks of the River Thames.

2 Mar 2010 19:25

Toby Carvery, Ewell

This pub has had a number of name changes in its lifetime and is currently a Toby carvery. It is extremely popular and it took over a half an hour to get into the restaurant area. The food was cheap, plentiful and good. The bar sold Fullers London Pride and Green King IPA which was cheap at 2.25. It was comfortable and friendly but far too crowded for me. If you came for the cheap food and you had a lot of patience it is fine but otherwise you should go elsewhere.

25 Nov 2009 20:06

The Queens Head, Epsom

This pub has recently changed hands and has obviously been refurbished but the layout is unchanged. It is located just out of town, close to some traffic lights which makes access to the car park difficult. The main lounge is L shaped around the central bar. There is another small room at the far end which contains a pool table. It has 2 real ales, Fullers London Pride and Green King IPA but there was a third unused pump. Seating was comfortable. Mainly a working man's pub but none the worse for that.

25 Nov 2009 20:01

The Magna Carta, Lincoln

A pub located in the middle of the old part of the town between the cathedral and the castle. Walls are largely covered in wood and the lounge was split into 2 levels with another lounge upstairs. The seating was comfortable. The bar offered a good choice of real ales and the food was reasonably priced.

25 Nov 2009 19:54

The Bull and Chain, Lincoln

A small pub next to a car park used by visitors to the cathedral and castle. It had 2 real ales and food was available. The lounge was split into 2 areas with the bar between. It was comfortable but it lacked atmosphere.

25 Nov 2009 19:50

The No 2 Refreshment Rooms (Under the Clock), Cleethorpes

Named so because it is under the clock on Cleethorpes rail station. It is extremely compact with the bar on the left and the seating on the right. Despite its size, it had 6 handpumps for real ale but only 5 were on. A rather uninspiring collection but acceptable. Seating was comfortable butof course due its size did not sell food on any kind. Despite its location it was full of locals.

25 Nov 2009 19:45

Willy's Pub and Brewery, Cleethorpes

One of the rare pubs that brews its on beer. It is located at the far end of the promenade. It was selling its "Original" for only 99p - how zat Wetherspoons! I tried the Last Resort which was a sweet golden beer that was very palatable. The pub itself was very basic with pipes and tubes showing everywhere. Seating was limited to hard dining room type furniture. It was doing a roaring trade in food was very reasonably priced.

25 Nov 2009 19:40

The Mariners, St Sampsons

The only pub in St Sampions. It is very small with the bar slap bang in the middle of it. It only sold Randalls Monty which was a keg beer but it wasn't bad. Food was limited to rolls but they were cheap. It is a basic friendly working man's pub which is OK for a quick pint.

30 Sep 2009 20:37

The Bankers Draught, St Peter Port

A large airy pub, now called The White Hart with a large standing area and seating located on the left and right of the pub. It had one real ale, Randalls Liberation but they weren't selling much of it because the pub is cleared aimed at young drinkers so wasn't really for me. Music was rather loud on Saturday night.

30 Sep 2009 20:29

The Ship And Crown, St Peter Port

A very popular pub even on late Sunday evening and as a result can get very noisy. It has a good range of real ales which changed several times during our week there. The seating is comfortable and there is the usual plethora of tvs around the lounge. The music can also be rather loud. I must be getting old! The food was OK but my ploughmans was more like a full blown salad.

30 Sep 2009 20:20

The Thomas de La Rue, St Peter Port

There is a small lounge at seafront level but it doesn't have real ale. The upstairs bar usually does but not on our first visit and only 1 on our second, Randalls Liberation which was very poor. Not my favourite pub on the island!

30 Sep 2009 20:12

The Foresters Arms, St Peter Port

A rather run down pub well outside the main town but on the seafront. Reasonably comfortable but no real ale so this pub is not for me.

30 Sep 2009 20:03

Cornerstone Cafe Bar, St Peter Port

Despite being called a cafe bar, it is a fine pub with a reasonable selection of real ales, including Randalls Patois and Timothy Taylor Landlord. The front looks more like a shop than a pub but is none the worse for that. The main lounge is at th back of the pub and the bar dominates the front of it. There are rather a lot of tvs for such a small pub. There is a steep hill to get to it but it is worth it and you have the excellent Cock and Bull almost next door.

30 Sep 2009 19:59

The Cock and Bull, St Peter Port

The pub is located on the top of a steep hill. The small bar had a fine selection of 5 real ales, including Randalls Patois and Wychwood Beewyched. The lounge was small with an upper area which overlooked the main lounge. There was an Irish band playing when we were there so the pub was very busy. The staff are very friendly and it has a good atmosphere. Despite being out of the way it is a very popular pub and deservedly so.

30 Sep 2009 19:50

The Sefton Arms, Epsom

This pub has been closed for a number of years and has now been knocked to make way for a new development

15 Aug 2009 16:13

Woodies, New Malden

A popular pub with CAMRA members with its fine range of real ales and regular beer festivals. The pub, which was a sports pavilion is located in a quiet cul-de-sac in a residential estate and overlooks a large sports field. It has a large patio area but you can hear the drone from the nearby A3. Inside it is a fire inspector's nightmare with every bit of wall and ceiling covered with sports pictures, programmes, newspaper stories and other articles. Excellent choice of real ale which is changed on a regular basis and is served well. Plenty of comfortable seating and there was a large food counter but it was open when I was there.

27 Apr 2009 20:48

The Sussex Cricketer, Hove

An Ember Inns pub with their usual decor and choice of food. Seating was very comfortable and the pub had a very friendly atmosphere. They had 3 cask ales on the bar, Greene King IPA, Harvey's Sussex and Morrisy Fox Blond. The latter was served well but was rather bland.

27 Apr 2009 20:41

The Hove Park, Hove

An unusual pub with its lounge located in a sub basement. There was wood panelling on the walls and there was a small lounge before you reached the main bar which had further seating. Seating could have been more comfortable and the choice of beer was limited to Harvey's Sussex but it was very drinkable.

27 Apr 2009 20:38

The Cliftonville Inn, Hove

Smaller than most Wetherspoons. It is located in a pedestrianised part of Hove. A good choice of local beers, particularly Weltons. Since I was in there for breakfast, I can't comment on any of the beers. At the time I was there it was mainly full of the usual old crones that frequent Wetherspoon's pubs but it was comfortable all the same.

27 Apr 2009 20:34

The Symonds Well, Epsom

A small quaint pub just on the edge of the main shopping centre. It has one lounge with a central bar and a pool table at the far end. Seating is serviceable but I wouldn't want to sit there all evening. Although the bar had 5 hand pumps, there was only 2 cask ales on when I was there, Youngs Bitter and Fuller's London Pride. The latter was very good and the atmosphere was friendly and inviting. Clientele appear to be mainly in their 20-30s. Well worth adding to your list if you are planning a pub crawl of Epsom pubs.

27 Apr 2009 20:28

The Jolly Coopers, Epsom

A small traditional pub in a quiet part of Epsom but not far from the town centre. Only recently reopened after being closed for about 2 years. It has 2 separate bars with a small lounge and a pool table in the other bar. Seating is basic but adequate. It serves a fine pint of Surrey Hills Shere Drop as wellas London Pride. The Landlord told us that a Pilgrim beer was to be added soon. It is a nice friendly unpretentious pub which doesn't pretend to be a restaurant or anything else. It is also dog friendly which is a rarity nowadays. It is like pubs used to be.

3 Dec 2008 21:00

The Cricketers, Epsom

This Ember Inn is in a delightful location next to a large pond and a common but close to the centre of the town. The inside is nothing to write home about but is comfortable enough. It has an adequate range of beers and the usual Ember Inn's food. It is a popular pub in the summer and deservably so.

20 Aug 2008 20:04

The Albert Arms, Esher

A small pub in the centre of Esher. The lounge is dominated by a large u-shaped bar and seating is confined to a few high table and chairs sprinkled around the bar. There is a restaurant in the rear. It was busy when I was in there and soon got very noisy. A fine selection of beers, including Surrey Hills Shere Drop and Wychwood Last Resort (I think that was the name). It was very expensive though at 3.10 per pint. An unusual pub to sell real ale since when I was there, the clientele appeared to mainly middle class professionals who were mainly drinking wine or lager. It is worth a visit but I will not add it to my regular haunts.

12 Jul 2008 12:35

The Nags Head, Chichester

The pub looks to be in basically original condition with stained and frosted glass in the screens and windows. Reasonably comfortable in main lounge. A good choice of real ales but no unusual ones. The restaurant had a carvery which was good value and the turkey was excellent. However it was very noisy and reminded of a medival banquet! As soon as we finished the food we left, to give our ears a rest.

21 Jun 2008 16:22

The Bell Inn, Chichester

A traditional unspoilt pub just outside the city walls. Great choice of real ales. Very friendly staff and customers. No blaring music. Just a comfortable pub to while away some time savouring their beer.

21 Jun 2008 16:15

The Royal Oak, Bookham

A small traditional pub in the centre of Bookham. It has 2 rooms with a compact bar between. The main lounge has a slate floor with limited and basic seating. The food is simple but good value. The bar staff were very friendly and offered a excellent range of real ales but it was during their beer festival.

22 Apr 2008 21:06

The White Horse, Epsom

A small pub just outside Epsom Hospital. A pub I didn't used to like because I felt that it was too clichey. However it is now under new management who are promoting it as a real ale pub. It is planning a beer festival on May Day weekend. It has an awkward shaped lounge which makes poor use of the available space and is dominated by the bar which can be difficult to get to when it gets crowded. It has a fine range of real ales, including some from unusual breweries. There are 2 large leather sofas at the front of the pub but the rest of the seating is fairly basic. It is does a good range of food but I haven't tried any. The atmosphere is now completely changed and is well worth a visit.

22 Apr 2008 21:03

The Black Lion, Surbiton

This pub has been newly decorated and reportedly has had 100,000 spent on the refurb. It has the same layout but new furniture and decor. Now much improved. It sells Charles Bombardier alongside the usual Young's beers.

22 Apr 2008 20:54

The Chessington Oak, Chessington

Large pub, formerly known as the Blackamore Arms located on a mini roundabout in the centre of Chessington close to the station. Comfortable lounge which wraps itself around the central bar. Only 1 real ale when I was there but it was a very reasonably priced Old Speckled Hen at 2.10 per pint. Serves mainly grilled food which is also cheap. I wasn't eating so can't comment on the quality. Friendly and comfortable and worth a visit.

9 Feb 2008 17:02

The Sloop Inn, Porthgain

An unusual pub in the small port of Porthgain. The interior is designed to look like the inside of a boat. There was plenty of seating and an outside patio area. It served Brain's beer and a very nice Rev James. A bit touristy but still worth a visit.

17 Oct 2007 20:49

Rodboro Buildings, Guildford

A very large Wetherspoon's pub near the station. The main lounge is on 3 levels and is dominated by huge pillars and large trunking for its heating/air conditioning. There is a first floor which is well above the main lounge and has its own bar. The beer and food is the usual Wetherspoon's fare but I had Woodforde's Wherry and Beartown Bear Ass which were both very nice. The pub is spacious and generally comfortable. When I was there, early Friday evening, it full of young people i.e. younger than me! Although it was dark and grissly outside, it was still rather dull and gloomy inside, some might call it moody! Very unusual pub which is well worth a visit.

17 Oct 2007 20:46

Duke of York, Surbiton

A modern red brick pub in the centre of the high street. A Greene King pub recently refurbished but I can't comment on the changes since it is my first visit. Large central area with bare floorboards near bar. There are 2 raised areas with more comfortable seating. There is a pool table at the rear and large screen televisions around the bar. Layout reminiscent of Wetherspoon's pubs. 4 cask ales all from the Green King stable, a very pleasant Alfresco and Old Speckled Hen. Worth a visit but I wouldn't make it my regular pub.

3 Aug 2007 13:09

The Barley Mow, Epsom

A small public just outside the town centre. Used to be the only source of Fullers beer before London Pride became the most common beer in the country. Once a smokey man's pub but various extensions later, the character has changed so now attracts a more varied clientele. Fine range of Fullers beers, perfectly served in a friendly atmosphere. In summer you can sit in the garden or out the front along as you don't mind sharing the space with smokers! One of the best pubs in Epsom and should included on any pub crawl of Epsom.

3 Aug 2007 12:56

The Hare and Hounds, Claygate

A large pub at the junction of roads with a car park on one side and a patio/green in front. One side of pub is dedicated to a French restaurant, L'Auberge. Plenty of oak beams in the lounge but some look cosmetic to me. 4 cask ales on the bar, Adnams Broadside and Regatta, Everards Beacon and Fullers London Pride. Beer was tepid and overpriced at 3 per pint. Comfortable leather armchairs and sofas at one end and dining room type chairs in the remainder. Quiet and relaxing atmosphere.

20 Jul 2007 13:28

The Grey Horse, Kingston Upon Thames

A rather austere pub near the station. There are bare wooden floorboards and basic seating. It is a regular venue for live music but not while I was there. It is doesn't appear to sell food of any kind but it had several cask ales on the bar. I drank their Youngs Special bitter. The pub was very quiet when I was in there, mid Friday afternoon and the solitary bar person looked very bored. Apart from the music, I would only recommend it for a quick pint.

7 Jul 2007 16:35

The Royal Oak, Leatherhead

A local's pub outside of the main town which seems to attract loud mouthed, hard swearing types. Not a place to take your wife or girlfriend! Reasonably comfortable but certainly not posh. Landlord must be a biker judging by the photos around the place. It's saving grace was 3 real ales with a fourth pump available. Morland Original, Rev James and GK Abbott ale were available on the day. Service was bit slow with only one bar person serving. Small patio mainly occupied by the smokers. Car park also small but it has been expanded. It doesn't appear to sell food.

7 Jul 2007 16:29

The White Hart, Chessington

A pub with a large frontage and car park, at the far end of Hook Broadway. There appears to be 2 bars but the left hand one was closed for redecoration. The other was moderately comfortable with a small children's area at the far end. Decoration a bit tacky with green/blue flashing lights around the door and children's area. Left over from Christmas? Despite having 7 lagers, there was only 1 cask ale available, Courage Best on an unmarked pump. A sign of the times, I suppose. A typical unpretentious local's boozer that doesn't appear to sell food.

7 Jul 2007 16:22

The Assembly Rooms, Epsom

A large Wetherspoon pub in the centre of Epsom with a large paved area outside. Ideal if you have a motorbike like me. Large lounge on 3 levels with bar on top one. Comfortable with plenty of seating. It appears to be popular with families. There is a good range of real ales that are well kept. Although it is well worth a visit, it rather lacks character for me.

9 May 2007 20:45

The Cap in Hand, Hook

Large Wetherspoons on the Ace of Spades roundabout. Large car park but access slightly awkward. Large airey conservatory next to long thin lounge plus a smaller patio. Fine range of cask ales well served. Not your usual Wetherspoon clientele - younger and more middle class. Much nicer than your usual Wetherspoon.

28 Apr 2007 16:35

The Lucky Rover, Hook

Located in the centre of Hook Broadway with a small frontage with just enough space for 2 tables/benches. Compact 1 bar pub with around the wall seating which is moderately comfortable. 2 cask ales, Courage Best Bitter and a very nice pint of Harveys Sussex Bitter. Predominately used by locals who like their horse racing on the box. Appears to be popular with workers in the construction trade.

27 Apr 2007 09:19

The Blue Ball, Walton On The Hill

A roomy pub near the pond in Walton on the Hill and opposite Banstead Common. Bar takes up an inordinate amount of space in the lounge with the restaurant taking all of the far side. Very popular for food and service was extremely quick. Some items on the menu were over priced. 4 cask ales including a mild but rather ordinary brands. Seating rather firm and upright. Large garden and car park. Popular with families.

9 Apr 2007 12:55

The Sportsman 'Time Well Spent', Mogador

A small traditional pub just off Banstead Common. Popular with walkers and car drivers alike. Small bar with a good choice of cask ales, including Wadsworth 6X and Charles Wells Bombardier. Was doing a roaring trade for food (Good Friday) though the Al Acarte menu was very pricey and really only suitable for a special meal in the evening. Lounge was small with rather firm church pew type seating which was not comfortable for long periods. However most of the customers were sat outside. A pub with great character and well worth a visit.

9 Apr 2007 12:49

The Albion, Epsom

A working class pub at the far end of the High Street. Large screen TVs mainly used for Horse Racing and Football. Long thin lounge with a small patio at the far end. An ex Hogshead pub now run by Greene King, serving GK IPA, Abbott Ale and Old Speckled Hen. Beer is cheap and reasonably well kept though Old Speckled Hen is a shadow of its former self. Food is also cheap but basic. My curry was very unappetising with a thick gooey curry sauce poured on top of chicken pieces and microwaved. Can get rather smokey and feels a bit run down. Could do with a bit of a makeover.

9 Apr 2007 12:43

The Black Lion, Surbiton

A popular locals pub which serves Youngs beer. A long lounge with comfortable wall seating. Beers are well kept. A pleasant friendly atmosphere. There is a large screen TV at the far end and according the boards it does quiz nites, karoake and live bands. Some areas of the lounge could do with some rectification work.

24 Mar 2007 16:55

The Lamb, Surbiton

A recently reopened pub with a u-shaped lounge and a central bar. A bit austere for my tastes with bare wood floorboards and a mish-mash of hard chairs. There is, however 3 comfortable leather sofas. Only 2 cask ales on the bar, though the Hobgoblin was very nice if rather expensive at 3 per pint. A little quiet when I was in there but it was early evening.

24 Mar 2007 16:51

The Red Lion, Hove

A compact traditional pub located in a side street. Small lounge with wood pannelled walls and a pool table at the front. Round the wall seating comfortable but a bit firm. Only 1 cask ale, Harveys Sussex bitter which was well kept. Friendly convivial atmosphere.

16 Mar 2007 09:37

The North Star, Hook

A deceptively large pub with a spacious lounge that snakes around to an extension at the back. Furnished in typical tasteful Ember Inns style (others may disagree). Good range of cask ales including some unusual ones. Comfortable with a pleasant friendly atmosphere. Reasonably sized car park. Located about 1/4 mile from teh Ace of Spades roundabout. Well worth a visit.

16 Mar 2007 09:34

The Harrow, Chessington

Quite a large pub but about half is taken up by a restaurant. The bar lounge is small so it gets crowded around the bar and it tends to get smokey. Only 1 real ale, Courage Bitter. Large car park for those that are driving.

9 Mar 2007 11:07

The Antelope, Surbiton

A pleasant compact locals bar not far from the high street. L shaped lounge with a Pool Room at the back with 2 pool tables. Reasonably comfortable and friendly. One of my favourite beers was on tap, Bateman's XXXb which was very good. Certainly worth a visit.

22 Feb 2007 13:19

The Shy Horse, Chessington

A meticulously maintained pub with a well laid out comfortable lounge. Only 1 cask ale, Fullers London Pride but it was well kept. However it has the feel of a restaurant with a bar rather than vice versa. Not my type of pub.

2 Feb 2007 09:42

The North Star, Hook

Due to close for 2 weeks from 21st January for some internal changes.

The Kings Arms, Epsom

A comfortable homely pub with the usual range of Youngs beers which are well kept and served. Useful sized car park. Just outside main town centre.

The Woodman, Ashtead

Large mock tudor pub next to Ashtead Recreation Ground. Fine views across to Ashtead Common make it popular in summer. The various extensive alterations that this pub has suffered have robbed it of most of its character. Comfortable pub but one I never feel at home in, for much the same reasons given by other reviewers. Badly needs a visible and dynamic manager who takes an interest in his customers.

The Red Lion, Tolworth

A pleasant enough pub just up the road from Tolworth Broadway. Comfortable but with poor range of real ales. For me it lacked atmosphere and was distinctly average.

The Victoria, Surbiton

A large Youngs pub in the centre of the High Street. Very comfortable with a cosy feel to it, especially in the winter. Good range of Young's beer and a large bar so it is easy to get served. Large patio area for the summer

Harts Boatyard, Surbiton

When I was told that my employer was holding its Xmas lunch here, I checked the reviews on this site and expected the worst. However the service was good and the food was fine. The bar had London Pride at the start although it ran out before we left and we had to drink that dreadful Tetleys Bitter instead. Not a pub I would normally go for a drink though I imagine it must be pleasant on a summer's day. Far better a pub than the reviews lead me to believe.

The Railway Guard, Epsom

A small locals' bar a short walk from the town centre. Everybody appears to know everybody else, a bit off putting if you are not a local! A good range of real ales, including some unusual ones. Friendly staff and a good atmosphere. Comfortable but certainly not plush.

The Running Horse, Leatherhead

A very old pub at the bottom of Bridge Street close to the bridge that goes over the River Mole. It has a small lounge bar with church pew type seating with an adjacent dining area. There is a larger bar at the rear and a small patio. There is limited car parking at the side of the pub but there is a public car park next door. A fine range of real ales which are well kept and served by friendly and informative staff. An ideal pub to "chill out". The pub was saved from firkinisation in the 90's by a concerted campaign by locals and regulars. A delightful pub that should be on every discerning real ale drinkers list. Highly recommended.

The Surbiton Flyer, Surbiton

Interior a bit spartan for my tastes, bare wooden and tiled floor with basic seating, though there is a leather settee. Full range of Fullers beers, well kept and served by punctual and friendly bar staff. Got a bit noisy when I was in there, a Friday evening but that may not be typical. Convenient for the station. Worth keeping on your list of pubs to visit.

The Coronation Hall, Surbiton

A unique pub with a very elaborate interior. There is gold gilding on the roof, with a relief of the solar system on one end wall. It is themed with artifacts from the cinema. There is plenty of comfortable seating with long bar.
I was served quickly and efficiently despite being a Friday evening and it was during their Half Moon beer festival. There was a fine range of 12 real ales, including some very unusual ones which you don't normally see in a pub.
The usual Wetherspoon food but I didn't eat there so I can't comment on its quality. One of the best Wetherspoons I have visited and is well worth a visit.

The Brewery Inn, Ashtead

A friendly pub with a good range of real ales. Becoming popular with young people. A part of the Ember Inns chain so food very predictable but reasonably cheap.

The Maypole, Surbiton

A basic local booser in need of a bit of TLC. Furnishings and decor not very inviting. Unlikely to appeal to women unless they are the type that like standing at the bar. Flowers Original beer was good though.
