The bar has recently been updtated. This WAS one of the best bars in Manchester till they changed the staff. I have now seen them insult customers twice for bringing back below par beer. Avoid like the plague 1/10.
11 Feb 2015 16:39
The last proper boozer on Thomas Street. Get your blue suede shoes on if Big Jim is singing. If you want a flash bar-go elsewhere.
11 Feb 2015 16:34
Decent pint of Holts and also new guest beers. Quite a big recent refurb which has changed it from being a boozers pub to a frilly seated boozers pub....
11 Feb 2015 16:31
Still a very cramped bar, the beer is normally excellent and you can normally find a chair. Wetherspoons City Centre prices-which aren't too bad.
11 Feb 2015 16:27
Decent pint of Holts bitter in a traditional type pub. The most recent refurb hasn't messed about with the atmosphere.
11 Feb 2015 16:24
The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
I used to love this pub, but two changes have affected it recently. The restriction on drinking outside, probably can't be helped due to local residential complaints....But why have they employed that obnoxious tall chap behind the bar?...He tries to bully various customers whilst sucking up to his 'mates'....I'm surpised that a brewery with only one outlet in London would allow this. Can someone please put a review up when he has left and I can inform a few ex customers that it's 'safe' to come back...

Not a bad stopoff for a late beer after the 11pms have closed on a friday. Loud music - lots of lights (I believe the chap in the centre of it is called a D.J.)....Anyway a couple of pints later and I had flashing lights in my brain all the way back to the hotel.
7 Mar 2010 10:42
Wow!...All the seats were taken, last time I called...Whats happened to the best kept underpopulated pub in Smithfield?....The pint was excellent as usual. The punters are a decent younger bunch and it has the feel of a slightly updated version of what a student pub looks like in numerous 1950's Brit Flicks.
I think that walking past John Betjemans old flat on one side and the ancient, sturdy , beautiful Church of St Bartholomews on the other (minus film crews-for once)- might have added to my Timewarpishness (or maybe it was just the amount of beer I'd consumed)....
7 Mar 2010 10:34
The Butcher's Hook and Cleaver, Smithfield
Decent range of quality beers, the pub is on two levels which is common with many Fullers pubs near The City. Most times I've visited its tended to have its fair share of the suited.
7 Mar 2010 10:14
Good atmosphere, swtched on staff-who actually have a personality (uncommon in most pubs) and a decent range of decent beers...
7 Mar 2010 10:08
The Sir John Oldcastle, Farringdon
It's a 'does exactly what it says on the label' Wethers.........
7 Mar 2010 10:03
I was expecting more from this pub after reading some reviews, the beer was O.K. but the atmosphere was flat as a pancake.
25 Oct 2009 12:05
Its worth checking out The Chandos if you're in the area as -considering its position- it can be surprisingly quiet, even on a saturday afternoon. In recent years the Sam Smiths Old Brewery has been on fine form and a bargain at 1.90....Upstairs is more food oriented, still a surprisingly excellent boozer.
25 Oct 2009 11:57
The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
The Plain Porter is now 3.35, this place is still a decent stop off on a saturday afternoon, if only to have a quiet pint after survivng Covent Garden.Beer quality is invariably excellent.
25 Oct 2009 11:48
The Horse and Groom, Great Portland Street
Had a check what all the other Billys were drinking in here-and decided to 'Go Lager'...cheap enough for central London, a bit of a mish mash of people (and a bit of a mish mash of a pub)...O.K. but not an outstanding Sam Smiths pub -of which there are still a few in London.
25 Oct 2009 11:45
The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
Still the best boozer in London if you're into Honey Porter (sounds like a Bond babe?), Cream Stout (which doesn't) and assorted other top brews, It's a pity that you can't stand with a drink outside after 10pm as this makes the place even more cramped...Choose your bottles from the shelf-if you want room temp ale....HAPPY SUPPING!
25 Oct 2009 11:38
The Hamilton Hall, Liverpool Street
After a breakfast or 2 or 3....(Bagel shop Brick Lane, Kellys pie & mash, & the Italian cafe on Bethnall Green Rd...It was time for a 10 a.m. pint on saturday morning-jump on the No 8 and get your tonsils tickled in here, not one of the best Wethers-but convenient all the same.
25 Oct 2009 11:32
Stopped off for a late un here a couple of weeks ago(on a friday)- WOW!! this place was really buzzing - 80% of the people in there were bouncing round to the jukey....the tunes weren't great-but I loved the atmosphere-more of the same please!
25 Oct 2009 11:24
HMS Wenlock?? - I got there late on a couple of fridays ago....quite a few of the passengers didn't have their sea legs and bumped into you as you tried to get served....The 3 elderly chaps in the corner hammered out the jazz as the ship slowly sunk in its own beer suds.......Love the place, good natured drunkeness, quality ales and Thatchers cider...bar staff doing their best to keep the alcohol flowing.....It's become a 'must visit' on my jaunts around here....Just don't wear any decent clobber!
25 Oct 2009 11:20
Decent boozer, the staff tried to keep the service level high, the beer was fine & its not too far from The Wenlock
25 Oct 2009 11:11
Nice to find a very quiet pub 5 minutes from the hell that is Oxford Circus - Enjoyed my pints of 1.90 Old Brewery.Well maintained pub,woody-in a wooden sense.
25 Oct 2009 11:09
Gordon's Wine Bar, Charing Cross
Excellent customer Service-the chap behind the bar realised I was a stranger, treated me like a stranger and charged me like his best friend....
1 Feb 2009 21:59
Crap pint , served by some very good looking East European lady- whose interest appeared to be swayed by the fact that she had just been told that she was going to be the first non monkey in space to be blasted off without breathing apparatus....Oh!..Did I mention that the beer was crap?.....
1 Feb 2009 21:50
Decent boozer-lots of beers to choose from,I picked a good one and stuck to it......Forget the foreign barmaids ale talents....Make your own calculated guess-if you view these pages you must have some idea!!....
1 Feb 2009 21:39
Not a bad stop off if you're on your way from the centre of town to Smithfield.Decent pint and very lively owner/staff.....The comments on running a pub should keep entertained for most of the night!
1 Feb 2009 21:30
The Exmouth Arms, Exmouth Market
Still an entertaining place for a late night drink....not the usual derelict mob of yore...this time it was a drunken pervy Pole and a wannabee gangster - the staff were still nice though.....
1 Feb 2009 21:24
The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell
Having a drink mid P.M. ,so there was still the odd imbibing postie -lets hope this(and the early opening) can continue.....
1 Feb 2009 21:20
Not a bad boozer-full of ex stuuuudents and their ex stuuuuudent Mrs..... Usually open late - even when you've had enough of the city centre Wethers...and quote close to the more potent kebab shops.....
1 Feb 2009 21:15
You're buying a pint in someone elses front room-get used to it!
1 Feb 2009 21:11
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
Top pint of Sam Smiths. The Old Brewery wasn't as good as my previous trips here nor at the Chandos (how do they do that !)....but, by London standards-its still great pint, to be savoured before the Suits rush in....
1 Feb 2009 20:46
Went there when England beat Croatia away...I've not been as satisfied for years for not only winning the match -but shutting up the (mainly Glaswegian!) Irish on the way....Lets hope the Celtic economy keeps paying for the ludicrous prices you pay - and alsofor you to watch a rank Irish football team in a totally overpriced Oirish pub.
1 Feb 2009 20:23
Young, loud as fck, busy in the early evening...ie you'll like it or not.
1 Feb 2009 20:15
Some really decent people behind the bar -matched by a right set of twonks who tend to stand at the right end of the the bar....don't bother trying to communicate with these pondlife-they're algae brain is pre Flintstone....
1 Feb 2009 20:12
Hopefully find a chair on the the weekeend -then, it's time, for a drink(hopefully).
1 Feb 2009 20:07
I got the place as recommended by a Camra member-as a non Camra member member the beer quality did nothing for me(though the service was very good)...must be the Camra price....
1 Feb 2009 20:01
Still like this place-get a pint of Strongbow stick a couple of tunes on and look around You....Thats not a bad chillout fora burning out area
1 Feb 2009 19:52
Apologies!...The views on here have made me give this place a well deserved another look, Excellent beer!check the sitting room upstairs if you run out of space....on this place I'm suitably chastised
1 Feb 2009 19:48
I don't know which of the Smith Boys is checking the condition of its Samuel Smith brews in London lately? -but the standard has definitelty 'gone south'... The one exception this time (and all the more remarkable considering its location) is the Chandos off Leicester Sq.
1 Feb 2009 19:42
The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
Still the biz!!...off the shelf Honey Porter......WWWOOOOWWW!!
1 Feb 2009 19:27
Great for a brekky or during the day-at night time the average (cm) arm musclesize is far higher than te average (cm) IQ...........
1 Feb 2009 19:25
Had a drink in here again (It's lots better without the BNP taking up root in the front bar-and I'm far too old to front 15 of them...).. back to studentville.
1 Feb 2009 19:18
If you're old like me -and you like a backstreet loud music Studey pub, you'll love this one -(if you're too old-its totally changed since I got barred for life in 1981 ( when it did look like someones front room)
1 Feb 2009 19:10
Forget the rest-best pub in Tadcaster-if you can work your way in from outside to the bar.......
1 Feb 2009 19:02
The Coach and Horses, Tadcaster
Locals boozer, next to the bus out of town...Quite liked the [place
1 Feb 2009 19:00
The Angel and White Horse, Tadcaster
The 3rd pub out of 3 that gives you the "Slaughtered Lamb" look when you walk through the door in Tadcaster......this one has enough internal characterisics though to ignore the North Yorky mob.....Good Pint
1 Feb 2009 18:58
Top cheap pint (1.35)....anybody know the Slaughtered Lamb?
1 Feb 2009 18:53
Great pint,Decent student lively atmosphere...... Ruined tonight by the 'This is England' skinhead appreciation society -taking up the front bar space for a couple of hours.....LEEDS- get your city sorted!
23 Feb 2008 01:17
Had a great pint of Bradfords brewers Ruby Mild (4.4%)....good atmosphere in the pub... unlike its past rep as home of Leeds' football 'reception committee'
23 Feb 2008 01:12
Absolutely top pint of Bombardier (2.50)...varied selection at the bar....very welcoming traditional locals pub-just keep walking-when you get to the Ackhorne (off Micklegate).
23 Feb 2008 01:07
Tried a pint of Landlord (2.50),,,.Don't know if this a general Landlord fault -but it was flat as a southern 'beer of the month' within 5 minutes!...Good local with a friendly atmosphere in a very welcoming traditonal (1930's) pub.
23 Feb 2008 01:03
Whoops -should have realioed what kind of bar it was when I saw the Madonna and Quentin C drawings when I was getting served -friendly enough...Is that good?
23 Feb 2008 00:58
Had the Abbott whish was fairly bland -but my companions food was served sharpish...lots of people calling in for food -so can't be too bad!
23 Feb 2008 00:52
Got in before the post 5pm 'rush' -cracking pint of Everards Stout (2.65)..sat in the back room -very accomodating staff.
23 Feb 2008 00:49
Locals boozer -Sam Smiths bitter ,spot on as normal....Got the inbuilt skylight at the back-through which you see (in a few northern Sammy smiths pubs)the leather jackets and the loud women on pints...
23 Feb 2008 00:44
Lovely pint of Jennings Snecklifter 2.55 -nice pub having a bit of work done to it.
23 Feb 2008 00:38
Oh Yes!! still the business.Superbly maintained beer, great selection-the lack of attention to non regulars at the bar could do with a tweak-but well worth the visit.
2 Aug 2007 01:58
The Hare and Hounds, Manchester
Old style working mans drinking pub, with bar at the front, lounge at the back & a mainly standing room in between(pubs like this in york are venerated!)...Have to agree with beer quality being up & down at present-hope this gets sorted as its one of my favourite stopoffs
2 Aug 2007 01:50
They've took the punk off the jukey-which to me is a pity -cos loud should be loud...but i'll listen to the rest with my strongbow,as per usual
2 Aug 2007 01:46
Corbieres Wine Cavern, Manchester
Top music-ask em to pump it up..lots of old manchester bands...beer quality can vary-but still a manchester institution....my funniest visit here was @ 18 months ago, when I got trapped on a shopping trip ,as they decided to run a formula 1 circuit down market, cross, john dalton st & Deansgate...I'm stuck in the middle after saying Hello to some of Mr Waterstones books...Thank God for Corbieres beers $ jukey, otherwise I'd have been ....well-..soberer!
2 Aug 2007 01:42
Try drinking here, when theres a retro punk combo playing on a sunday afternoon...kiss goodbye to all this pubs many good points!
2 Aug 2007 01:34
The Tomas O'Raida Bar, Dublin Airport
Not too bad,the best thing is watching the suits...you can visibly see them thinking 'no way will I sit next to HIM on the way back'....Guess what chum-its your lucky day!!
2 Aug 2007 01:21
Bless me father,I have definitely sinned!! I questioned the quality of the beers here last time. This time they were gorgeous.I had the plain porter(excellent) and got my mate to 'test' the wrasslers...WOW! what a revelation, top notch pint- followed by a few qually good ones.Accompanied by top music -yet again! The guy was playing Roses tracks in his own style....Apologies to the couple for eating all their Pringles(def looked like you'd gone home!)
-don't miss this pub on a vis
2 Aug 2007 01:15
Has the feel of a tourist trap from previous visits, but my last stagger into the venue on a weekday night, brought a decent Irish session from the corner(as usual)but also a genuine Irish pub feel at the bar...(though my night had already been enhanced by excellent stopoffs in Kehoes,Doheny & Nesbitts and Toners)
2 Aug 2007 01:04
Sat at the bar on the ground floor -still the same 'seen it all-but don't quote me' clientele.
Still haven;t found a pub anywhere near here with that same atmosphere-so I'll keep coming
2 Aug 2007 00:52
Pretty empty during the day.The kind of place you could get a really good retro photo of a 60's pub ,60's patrons, vinyly pub...In fact I really liked it!
2 Aug 2007 00:49
Decent Indie music, had some Kopperberg to vary the G onslaught-open slightly later than some of the other pubs near Grafton St,so a big plus point....Though The only thing Irish about this pub was the postcode...
2 Aug 2007 00:45
Through the squint on the stairs-you can watch your deadly enemies,(in their flared trousers)walk nonchanantly down the stairs and blow you away with their magnum .44's to the background music of Starsky and Hutch wangy wangy music-your last view is of the 70's woody effect walls-one of which you slide slowly down.. Then again -you might be sat in here on a monday night with 2 decent Irish guys....use your imagination, but THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!
2 Aug 2007 00:40
The Exmouth Arms, Exmouth Market
Good late stop on the way back to the crash...Some pratt may have put his fist through the window...but what a great combination of drinkers in there...Posh totty dancing, posh drunken guys drinking, posties on a late drink, drunken northern blokes talking about their teams, lesbian police officers on a bender...For a late drink this is what you want.....
17 Mar 2007 04:02
The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
WAHEY!!! still the bis....Management change-but at least they've got some room temp stuff...EX-CELL-ENT!!
17 Mar 2007 03:55
Top pint -sound bar staff....and I've sorted out forgiveneness for drinking the expensive leftovers after inadverdently gaining admission to the rich wino's groupie meeting in the crypt round the corner
17 Mar 2007 03:53
The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping
The Business-Down this neck of the woods? -you can't pass this one by...The 1980's Yuppie Hutchers may still reside here-but the place has history...
17 Mar 2007 03:24
Great pub for being able to walk down the side of it and having a leak in the Thames..Tried to work out for the last 20 years why this pub doesnt look old-ITS THE CARPET-Leave it sans carpet slipper country, and you've added 200 years of history..
17 Mar 2007 03:17
Done a good job to chuck in a pub near the top two on the Wapping High street Strip.......
17 Mar 2007 03:12
Still like this boozer for the chill and the decor-but the continental lager I drunk was p***
17 Mar 2007 03:07
I've been in here for the past 20 years-and its as processed now as it was then. The pity is,that the pubs near it are now the same...
17 Mar 2007 03:05
The Grave Maurice, Whitechapel
Loved the old pub,up till a couple of years ago it was still rough as.....-not that I ever went in here after the Nags Head...Now its a Q-can't see anyone queuing for this one..
17 Mar 2007 03:02
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
Really liked this pub,but I think that part of the mystique is that you need an A-Z to work out here it is -I'd walked down Brick Lane many times without knowing its whereabouts...(let me get my tunes on-its loud and the brandy has stopped kickin in)
17 Mar 2007 02:55
Great old pub-pick one of the bars down either side or the main one at the back....I sometimes wonder if Nottingham deserves this pub-when you see some of the other slop merchants in the immediate area.
27 Feb 2007 01:02
Last minute pub for a sharpish one pre the rattler -thats about it...
26 Feb 2007 23:36
The Salutation Inn, Nottingham
Always loved the look of this ancient pub, though its always had the atmosphere of a stable without a Messiah....
26 Feb 2007 23:27
Bright pub with cheerful staff and decent beer-Castle Rock etc.Well worth a look if your round here.
26 Feb 2007 23:17
Love the layout of this pub.its the kind of place where-if you looked liked Daniel Craig- you'd expect to get your next 007 mission(M's sitting room)....Top pint-mine was London Pride.
26 Feb 2007 23:15
This place has to be seen....Visited this place quite a few times-and it still feels weird to be sat on an altar drinking a pint...victorian church, lots of light, plenty of stained glass in (Lincoln?)green.Excellent woirk by the refurb team
26 Feb 2007 23:10
Excellent pint of Everards Tiger 2.30...friendly staff in locally pub,in between the station and town.
26 Feb 2007 23:05
First time in since the refurb-beer was excellent as normal-nice to see what your drinking, due to the extra lighting/window space...Had the Archers which was a top drop.
26 Feb 2007 23:02
The Pit and Pendulum, Nottingham
Well worth a look at this place, especially when they only have 1 person serving the whole pub....Have a look around then walk out-unless you want to hang around for 20 minutes to get a drink.....Management-what does that mean??
26 Feb 2007 22:57
Top pub...get your pint of Strogbow and listen to the punk / death metal anthems....not as loud as it used to be-or am I just deafer?....Enjoy
26 Feb 2007 22:53
The Newcastle Arms, Nottingham
Loved this place before its refurb a few years ago..the food was incredibly cheap and the atmosphere bounced...Bye-Bye to both...sad.
26 Feb 2007 22:49
Upmarket older studey/post grad place, which lets the older punter sit around its big wooden tables-nice chill out music & cocktail range-well worth a look.
26 Feb 2007 22:47
The Tap 'n' Tumbler, Nottingham
The music on the jukey jumps froms one music style to another-the beer tasted dodgy and wasnt cheap...the food was cheap but doesnt make up for the other 2 failings...not worth the detour
26 Feb 2007 22:44
The Sir John Borlase Warren, Nottingham
Best beer I drunk allday in Nottingham. The Everards Tiger was stripe/spot on and the the Derby Porter wasnt far off.....The pubs like a well kept antique shop with some- very good-croaky French tunes on when I was in there...Well worth a check.
26 Feb 2007 22:39
Bottled beer only when I visited...A younger crowd that a lot of Wethers...Upstairs is better proposition for seating/views
14 Jan 2007 11:32
Decent wethers.Looks better from in than outside....Top beer from the smaller Scottish breweries.Has a few suits in as its in that part of town.
14 Jan 2007 11:28
Historic Glaswegian pub.Low ceilinged, dark & woody- with its own set of boozy regulars-tales of drunken music sessions abound!.....Good pint of Belhaven....Pool room upstairs.
14 Jan 2007 11:21
Cracking pint from the Kelham brewery, bright and breezy pub, which has a comedy venue downstairs. You can people watch through the large windows or give the bar a determined look....Well worth a visit if in the Merchant City.
14 Jan 2007 11:16
Went in at lunchtime and appeared quite soulless to me.The place looked like a well kept cafe bar..Not what I was expecting -and the beer wasn't great either.
14 Jan 2007 11:10
Gets some of trhe overspill from the busy bars nearby-standard wethers.
14 Jan 2007 11:07
Belting beer in here.Had the Summer Lightning-which was spot on.Wide range of beers on handpump -All priced at 2.40.Decent set of punters in this pub.Well worth the detour...Walked down St Vincent St from Byres Rd and the huge block of flats on the right are as good a windbreak as I've ever seen..
14 Jan 2007 11:03
Top pint of McEwans 80/- (2.10)and the other beers were also on form. This is where you deserve a sit down after your standing stint at Tennents...Appears to be more of a Postgrad student kind of hangout.Relaxed but with great beer....Had a deep fried black pudding supper after this-from the chippy down the road.."I left my Art(eries)
in a Sauchiehall Disco....."
14 Jan 2007 09:33
Loved this pub...Stand at the bar,and off you go...The Bitter&Twisted was in excellent form, 2.20.
good beery atmosphere-The first pub on my list for a return visit.
14 Jan 2007 09:23
Cracking pint of Guinness(2.70).Just round the corner from Hillhead underground. Some decent Irish tunes in the background...Well laid out pub with a few booths down one side.Liked the painted Guinness barrels outside.Good atmosphere
14 Jan 2007 09:18
Quiet pub(in the daytime anyway!)...stylish decor- it looks like a few quid has been spent on it.Had a pint of Peters Well here (2.55)-which wasn't the best...
Just round the corner from Tourist Info on George Sq.
14 Jan 2007 09:13
Cracking pub, handy for your first pint after getting off at Glasgown Central.Tends to be more space at the back of the bar-if you can get there!...Belhaven was 2.25,they had a (dodgy)house bitter for a quid and offers on other drinks-Tennants lager at 1.95 being very popular. The food was excellent value and tasted very nice.Decent looking interior-well worth a visit.
14 Jan 2007 09:08
Bright one room pub, which doesn't look like the kind of place where you'd want to have a full session.I've had much better Guinness as well.
6 Sep 2006 22:14
If you've been to the Covent Garden branch-you'll know what to expect, ups downs wood copper, bottles and plenty of variety in the beer. The plain porter I had, didn't hit the extremely high standard of Covent Garden.Though I must say that the quality of the live music has always been outstanding,no matter which group I've seen here.Well worth a look.
6 Sep 2006 22:08
Fine looking pub, lots of wood and stained glass-Have to agree with Albert on his comments.you can actually see whats in there, since they introduced the smoking ban.Tricky place to find on your first trip, but there is a small mosaic with the pubs name on Dame street which shows you where to turn off the pavement and through the passage to the pub.Enjoy!
6 Sep 2006 22:02
Cracking pub,and being 10 steps from my Hotel made it even better.UsuaIly a belting pint of Guinness.I usually try and sit in the back room if possible. Its the kind of place whetre its very easy to start chatting to your next seat neighbours, and the pictures on the wall are worth looking at,though a couple of my own personal favourites
-the geezer with the specs-are no longer there....Perhaps hes had laser surgery?
6 Sep 2006 21:54
Considering its position -it doesn't get too rammed during the day, although no matter what time you go,you'll always get literary enthusiasts coming in for a quick scan at one of Behans main drinking dens.
Small pub with big windows, gives it a great deal of light during the day.Tends to get a lot of 1 pint tourists,so it can fill up and empty within half an hour.
6 Sep 2006 21:45
Decent pub for a beer when its not too packed on a night visit. Some interesting featurespictures and woodwork to look at when punters are a bit sparse...
Narrow front bar spreads out to a larger space at the back.
6 Sep 2006 21:39
Good pub for an weekday afternoon drink, when there's usually only a handful of (local) people in,and the attention of most punters (and some staff)is the latest horse race on the box -a trait of many Irish pubs-Now I know why Cheltenham does good business!....Love the mahogany interior in this pub and the partitions, including the small snug at the front-a thing it has in common with my usual ports of call round here...Toners and Doheny&Nesbitts...The latter being my personal favourite Dublin pub
6 Sep 2006 21:34
Ther ground floor has a 'down at heel' feel, which isn't found much in this part of town. This is seen in both the surroundings and the regfulars-who have the looked of the failed muso about them...Decent atmosphere
6 Sep 2006 21:24
Theres more photos in here, than in a Heathrow baggage handlers house. Two small cosy rooms and a bar which is so small it should be called a ba or even a b.
The tetley draught was a pleasant drop. Its run by George who years ago, used to run the late lamented Douglas on Fennel St (opposite Pips). The Douglas still holds the record for the smallest pool table-with the biggest pockets I've ever seen. You had to have 20/20 eyesight to find somewhere to put your chalk round the side of the table that wasnt pocket...
22 Aug 2006 23:23
Excellent pub.It was in doubt that the high standards could be maintained, when the previous incumbent (Alex)left a couple of years ago. However, the beer is still brilliant & the choice of foreign beers, legendary. The Porters own beers are great-the regulars tend to have their own preferences-although the Sunshine is very popular. The prospect of this pub being demolished -for yet another massive soulless supermarket-is still a possibilty......Drink here while you can!
6 Aug 2006 12:17
Excellent pint of Sam Smiths.Cheap beer, refurbed a couple of years ago.Still has a slightly older clientele.Handy for a quick refresher after arduous bargain hunting at the market next door.

notoriousd....You must be drawing pictures of an empty pub on your windows, because when you look in -whilst speeding past this bobbins pub on the 42 bus-it always looks empty.......Hope your other pub reviews are a little more lucid.......
6 Aug 2006 11:36
The Crown and Anchor, Manchester
Usually have ample bar staff to serve you,in a decent pub which (along with its regulars)picks up the overspill from Sinclairs-25 yards up the road.
Serves a very good pint of Holts,at a price which is expensive by the brewerys prices-but cheap by city centre standards.
6 Aug 2006 11:29
The most upmarket Wethers in Manchester...Bet you'd never seen three of them words in the same sentence before!...A fair few sculptures & paintings in what used to be a solicitors office(don't ask why I know that...)Small bar space for the size of pub.The service is usually quite slow-but they have decent staff at present & yesterday they had 5 Moorhouses ales on draught. The Pendle Witch was spot on.Usual Wethers fare-not burnt to cinders like Edinburghs brekkys.Unlike most wethers-you actual feel comfortable, eating in this pub.
6 Aug 2006 11:07
The Jerusalem Tavern, Clerkenwell
ABO-SOL-UTE-ELY THE BEES KNEES!!....Great pub!...Had the draught Old Porter & Cream Stout-also had the Aspulls cider and (my personal favourite)the Honey Porter from the bottle.......Everyone of them was totally top notch....The only slight gripe I had was that the Honey Porter was too cold to really get the flavour as its served from the fridge...The same thing happens with Taddy Porter in Sam Smiths houses.
Mentioned this to the barman-who admitted it was a problem with space-but said to speak to him next time I'm in and he'll get a few room temp ones from the cellar-CLASS BLOKE!
Sat down by the table up the steps in the middle of the pub-I think this is the place from where you can see Jerusalem!....
Stonkingly good Pub -pity you can only give a maximum score of 10 on this site!
2 Apr 2006 15:00
The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane
The same layout as Whitelocks in Leeds-though about 200 years older!Wasnt too busy when I visited during the day.It appeared to be a bind to the barmaid to serve people as this kept interupting her text messaging.......
As expected-most of the other punters were legal bods-trying to outdo each other with their stories.
Pleasant enough place.
2 Apr 2006 14:47
Top pub,sat near the fire and came out smelling like an Arbroath smokie!Went in during the day when there were only a handful of people in.This pubs never changed in the many years I've frequented it.Basic furniture and lots of wood panelling-theres a proper pub atmosphere to the place...One of my favourites.
2 Apr 2006 14:39
The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross
Decent enough pub for a quick drink-well maintained beers and pleasant staff.
2 Apr 2006 14:31
I quite like the shabby chic...Its a nice place to stop off during the day as there are few punters and you can check out the interior or just check the human traffic going by-through the large windows...The chunky walls and wooden steps, down to the toilets-seem to transport you back in time-although I could do without the 'realistic stinky smells of ole London Towne'-which engage the nasal passage as soon as you get down there!
2 Apr 2006 14:27
Lots of shamrocks and stuff knocking about.Only realised (after getting my Guinness)that no one else was drinking it-not a good sign for an 'Irish' pub. Looks just like any other back street boozer to me.
2 Apr 2006 11:12
The Fox and Anchor, Smithfield
visited around 7.30am this week after a few snifters at the Cock & The Hope.......Absolutely top class full English brekky with a decent pint of Guinness to guide the food down...Appears to cater more for the office imbiber, than the Smithfield workers. The pub is waxed, polished and awaiting your appraisal-well worth a visit.
2 Apr 2006 11:07
The Butcher's Hook and Cleaver, Smithfield
Excellent pint of the seasonal porter. The usual Fullers pub conversion-ie mezzanine floor-lotsa wood and metal....This place always feels like a fast beer outlet to me,ie get them served and get them out.No soul to the place-but it does serve a good pint1
2 Apr 2006 10:57
Went for a drink last monday night, chilled out place, good service and decent beers-a pretty good pub-pity I keep referring to it as the 3 Henrys(Cooper, v111'th & Kissinger?)..............
2 Apr 2006 10:45
The Sekforde Arms, Clerkenwell
Has the 'feel' of a local boozer, which isn't too bad for most parts of London. When I was in,this week, the macho suits were all stood by the bar whilst the regulars were sat in the room to the right-good atmosphere and friendly service.
2 Apr 2006 10:41
Endorse most of what has been previously said-although I've managed to get Scarlett off the dry roasted.....We now share packets of pork scratchings-Scarlett gets the bottom half-because her hand is a lot smaller than mine......We also both agree that the chilled out jazzy(?) type tunes in the background enhanced the occasion...and the keeness of the bar staff was apparent...However It does take a while to read through the beer menu thats written over the bar-so a degree of/in Patience is required
1 Apr 2006 01:38
The previous 2 comments are pretty close to the mark. The place was surprisingly empty when the pavements are choc a bloc outside. And it was wierd how long it took the barmaid to acknowledge your presence-seeing that I was the only one who needed a drink-She eventually managed to drag her arse away from her friend....This pub has always had its fair share of middle aged drunks-but years ago,you could at least sit at a decent set of tables, and sit comfotably with your discomfort.
1 Apr 2006 01:21
Most points to be made are in previous comments,I think the barnside only comes into its own when theres a band playing-it makes for a sound music venue.
1 Apr 2006 01:14
cliquey scumbags.....Get to the bar and get told -sorry we can't serve you,you need to wear alternative clothing....(had to wear a jumper to get through the rain to the pub-you muppet)!!.....I was going to goth gigs when these prats were still smiling sweetly & showing off there milk teeth to the school camera.
...0/10 -and lucky to get that.
1 Apr 2006 01:10
It was shut last sunday evening...don't know if its just for a refurb??
1 Apr 2006 01:02
A pub which looks like it could be a cracker. Its cosy at the front, with a large (dance) floor at the rear.
The back room was being used for a kerryoake.Unfortunately the decent sound system made the caterwauling even clearer than normal...NOT a good thing!
1 Apr 2006 00:55
Was in this pub on a sunday night.....Lucky I'm not paranoid.....There were 5 traditional players sat in a circle facing inwards on the stage-playing away....
whilst the punters were all huddled round facing the bar.I sat at a table in the middle...-WERE THEY ALL TALKING ABOUT ME???WAS I SITTING OVER A TRAPDOOR THAT COULD HURTLE ME TO MY DEATH ON THE JAGGED ROCKS BELOW-IF I TAPPED MY FEET AT THE WRONG TIME...err no!! -just that noone had noticed me...so I eventually shuffled out -still,the trad session was very good.
1 Apr 2006 00:47
Enjoyed it in here-was a bit of a throwback to the 80's when I used to drink round here...The St Johns gone gastro & the Archways gone euro-but the Lion roars on!..Good atmosphere on sunday night, with the 1 man band mixing it up with the usual Irish tunes & some rebel songs(?).....Good boozy, mixed age atmosphere-the kind of Irish pub you're looking for on a very damp night!.
1 Apr 2006 00:33
Was in the front bar-no music on at the back...mixed crowd of drunken scruffy locals & a sprinkling of spaniards watching Real Madrid on the screens...uninspiring
1 Apr 2006 00:27
The Engine Rooms, Ashton Under Lyne
Much cheaper than was mentioned in the previous review...both in terms of food & beer prices....
The proximity to The Wethers pub, probably has a large bearing on this...The age group is a lot more mixed now, as well.
28 Feb 2006 17:39
The Ash Tree, Ashton Under Lyne
Cracking pint of Aboott served by a chap, who'd been left on his own,but who was working as quickly as the normal combination of 3 slackers you get at most Wethers pubs....usual Wethers pub features
28 Feb 2006 17:36
The Caledonia Hotel, Ashton Under Lyne
Excellent pub food, great service & a spot on pint of Robinsons(which isn't usually a favourite of mine...)
...This means I always stop off for a pint or two here on my A-U-L stop offs.
28 Feb 2006 17:33
Still like this bar...it deserved to get more popular & has taken up extra space to do this. However I absolutely LOVED the way it used to look-when it first opened...The psychedelic rooms with the outrageous structures...The senses were assaulted so much, you felt like you'd had 10 cocktails before you'd finished the first one!
7 Jan 2006 22:05
Forget comfort food-this is a comfort pub!colourful warm and friendly-with a lively history.Rather strange looking at the front bar-as some strange force, appears to have moved the 1st floor ceiling!...One of them pubs you genuinely want to revisit.
7 Jan 2006 21:30
One pub, situated round 3 sides of the entrance courtyard.Feels like it could be 3 separate pubs.Sat in the right side bar as you go in which gives a good view of the buildings structure-which is impressive.Well maintained pub with keen service.
7 Jan 2006 21:12
Decent laid back place.Appears to be somewhere in between a bar and a pub-which works well.Attracts a slightly more upmarket punter-though they let me in! Welcome addition to Yorks pub scene.
7 Jan 2006 18:43
Cracking location by the river, maybe too close-as the various high levels which the river Ouse has reached are marked inside on the pubs walls.Possibly the reason why The Sam Smiths isn't handpumped-'you change the barrel-you drown'.Usually a decent mix of tourists, locals & students. Can get chocker on sunny summer days.
7 Jan 2006 18:15
Decent pint of John Smiths in a sound pub, just inside the city walls.I usually sit in the front bar which is clean bright and basic-like front bars should be.always had a good pint at this boozer.
7 Jan 2006 18:04
I remember this pub as being the 1st(of many) I visited on a 6th form visit to York....slopes don't get much slippier, than the one I was on that day!
Hardly changed in the intervening years-unlike the new Hitchcockian me!
Definitely a locals pub, another Sam Smiths pub-but not the best.
7 Jan 2006 15:51
Never visited the pub in its previous guise.I've been in a lot of bars like this throughout the country. Its been refurbed for the early 20's pre club crowd. This usual appears popular for a couple of months-but unless its in the right location or has a great selling point-ie top music-then it dies.C'est la vie.
7 Jan 2006 15:44
Cracking tradional boozer.Always had an excellent pint here, this time it was Abbott Ale.Its a cramped 2 room pub with a side passage to join them.Sat in the back room this time.On the food front, they appear to have gone back to the doorstep sandwiches-which fits in with the pubs image-rather than the tapas etc of a few years ago.
Best to avoid this pub if you're in a large group-as it IS small. My favourite York pub.
7 Jan 2006 15:38
A larger pub than it appears from the outside. It looks weell maintained & tidy.Would appear to be directed more at the passing trade, than the regulars who previously frequented it during the day.
7 Jan 2006 15:29
Tried a few of the beers here and they were all of reasonable standard. The enthusiasm of the chap at the bar was particularly infectious.I Like the metal spiral staircase-although a few more pints may have brought a few problems....Its great to have an addition,to the already impressive, pubs of central York.
7 Jan 2006 15:23
Always liked this bar.Had a glass of Leffe and sat upstairs in the small seating area beneath the glass roof, surrounded by plants.Staring at various lively urban photographs.
7 Jan 2006 11:29
Cracking pint of Abbott, sat in the front bar,`which is cosy & warm with the fire getting a lot of attention due to the freezing conditions outside.
Attentive bar staff and great value food, mainly veggie options.
7 Jan 2006 11:23
Not been in this pub for years,as the local aleheads said that The brewery had stripped out the original interior years ago.
Decided to venture back in.Looks a good one to me.Several small 'rooms' on various levels.a patch of exposed wall shows the original building materials.Lots of light newly polished wood.Keen bar work.Reasonable pint of John Smiths.
7 Jan 2006 11:19
Great pint of Sam Smiths (1.31).Sat in the large lounge.Dark wood & leather upholstery which never fails to look clean & shiny.
Tends to be older chaps having a drink during the day.The retired military types would appreciate the cleanliness.
7 Jan 2006 11:11
Had a top pint of Roosters Yankee here-spot on.The chap who served me was very keen even asking if I wanted to read one of the papers .Sat in the Cosy 'front room'.
Theres an added quirk you get by coming here.At the traffic lights by the walls-you can see the old advert painted on the gable end of a house, advertising 'Bile Beans'-never fails to bring a smile to my face...No wonder Heinz came to dominate that market!
7 Jan 2006 11:04
Thank god for Wethers!Got a few pints of tasty 1.59 stout during the beer festival before getting back to the 2.40-2.70 pints in the old town. The haggis neeps & tatties was very good as well.1 main bar & 3 smaller rooms-well situated for having a stop off on a shopping trip.
19 Nov 2005 22:34
Heck of a lot of stag parties & groups of lads from south of the border in here, but theres a decent party mood round most of the pubs here.
19 Nov 2005 22:21
Nicely situated for the castle,as its just off the Royal Mile...fairly smoky pub,but a decent relaxed atmosphere . The beer (80/-) was very good..As its old town central, you'll need more than a fiver for a couple of pints.
19 Nov 2005 22:18
Top little pub-looks like a 2nd hand shop from the outside, but don't be put off as its a real find. Its a laid back front bar with a smaller backroom. Some of the middle aged local male punters were drinking wine.Theres a great selection of real ales from north & south of the border-had an excellent pint of Riggwelter. The chap that served me,had the best waxed moustache since Salvador Dali....and if I'd had any more Riggwelter I'd have tried to bring it home with me!!......
19 Nov 2005 22:06
Cracking little pub-like sitting in someones front room.Good beer from the smaller (scottish) brewers.Had my haggis tatties & neeps-which was spot on.Camra pub of the year for scotland 2005
19 Nov 2005 21:26
Excellent beer quality, which was only matched in Edinburgh by The Blue Blazer.Tried several of the brews & they were all top notch.Harviestouns bitter & twisted and a Kelburn brew, being particularly good.
Quite a busy pub with the punters being better dressed than you normally get for a pub with such good beer...Well worth more visits
19 Nov 2005 20:49
Greyfriars Bobby's Bar, Edinburgh
No atmosphere,...accosted by the local bore as soon as we went in....fairly mixed age group in there, including numerous tourists
19 Nov 2005 20:40
Had a good pint of 80/- in here, and at 2.10 its very cheap by central Edinburgh prices......Looks a hardened drinkers pub with limited seating.Probably a good place to catch a match on the box.
19 Nov 2005 11:43
Fairly relaxed pub-lot of seating with limited standing areas.Decent pint on draught.Didnt like the way they dropped leaflets on your tables at 7.15pm to say `these tables are reserved from 7.45pm`.....This is not very customer friendly to say the least!
Worth fortifying yourself in here before attempting the @125 steps-opposite the pub- upto the Royal Mile.
19 Nov 2005 11:38
Decent pub with a very laid back atmosphere, appears to attract a few of the trippy ex student types....
The service can be slow though.
19 Nov 2005 11:28
Good selection of beers in a well set out bright room with decent memoribilia .Appears to attract the dedicated drinker whose main interest is the beer quality-which was excellent.Has the narrow rectangular tables which probably rules out changing it to a food pub(unless its a choice of french bread or baguette...).
19 Nov 2005 11:24
The Black Bull Tavern, Edinburgh
Not much to add to the previous comment...stuck to the Newcy Brown as there's no strongbow-which is my usual drink of choice in loud music pubs(I don't no why either!)..jukey has more classic hard rock than anything, but the alternative & punk fans will find something on it.Its a very mixed age range for a music pub.Theres people that look like they've not slept since the Isle of Wight festival in the 60's-stood alongside students....it works well
19 Nov 2005 11:15
Liked this pub a lot.Good atmosphere, great music from some of the better bands from years ago(eg Wasted Life-Stiff Little Fingers).stripped down flagstoned bar with a small music venue attached. The 80/- was 2.70 which is slightly above the Edinburgh norm-but its a good pint.worth a visit...
19 Nov 2005 11:07
Great looking 1 room pub with an island bar.The IPA wasnt the best I've had,but the surroundings are excellent.Dark wooded walls with really well crafted wooden triangular lintel.Bright freshly painted stucco work...you appreciate the room whilst trying to work out which real ale to try next
19 Nov 2005 11:00
The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
Plain Porter...Plain Brilliant!!...My favourite pint in Smokie Town.....They do a tasters servive, which gives you a quick nip of the main brews...but I've found the Porter is King.....3 a pint-which seems more of a bargain after each glass!
Good place to visit during the day as its not too busy...The Ups n Downs format is quite similar to its sister branch in Dublin-whilst theres plenty of nooks & crannies to choose your seat from.
21 Sep 2005 21:31
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
Walking past here at 11am,saturday,thought I'd check the pub out before anyone else gets in(as previous visits have entailed unintentional touchy-feely with about 6 people I've never met before)....I've never rated the beer here so I had cider.....Its a fine looking pub lots of old wood in the back bar, whilst you can sit upstairs- even though it looks more of a food service area.I found the service excellent....Its A little bit of London history-but early visiting is advised!
21 Sep 2005 21:18
Got in early via the pasty shop and had an excellent pint of Betty Stoggs whilst sitting out in the sun on the balcony watching the strained attempts of the performers to generate a crowd which they hope can be persuaded to put hands in pockets for 14.5 minutes of blather & 30 seconds of uncertain action...NOW THATS ENTERTAINMENT!
21 Sep 2005 21:07
The Coach and Horses, Covent Garden
Seems pleasant enough place, the service was excellent, but I must admit I still haven't had any black stuff to compete with the Plain Porter at the Porterhouse round the corner
21 Sep 2005 20:59
"....I managed to evade the Riverside border guards and was able to amble to the White Swan without being asked for my pass.As you may be aware I am NOT a card carrying member of the 'cycling, toddling,WALKIES' Club, which meant that I had to act my Larry O ass off to avoid looking suspicious in such strange surroundings".........................................Still,I enjoyed the beer the view of the river & the pub itself still looks good.
21 Sep 2005 20:45
The Pitcher and Piano, Richmond
Quick drink in here last saturday night,it wasnt too packed and the service was quick & efficient...ok atmosphere as well.
21 Sep 2005 20:15
Like this pub...Not a great Youngs fan but the beer was ok...Usually a few people here who like a beer & a laugh.....Also woke up with more drunkenly taken mobile phone snaps of the river/bridge taken from the balcony & ground floor window...David Bailey-NOT
21 Sep 2005 20:10
Appears to be a bit more of a boozers pub, with a mixture of ages....Enjoyed the ESB...a bit more downmarket than some Richmond pubs-but thats ok with me.
21 Sep 2005 20:04
Fairly central bar on the Richmond stretch of the rivers hostelries.Bright breezy high ceilinged bar.Good for a 1 pint stopoff.
21 Sep 2005 20:00
Decent atmosphere in the pub which looks out over the Green...On cider so cant rate the beer
21 Sep 2005 19:57
St Margarets Tavern, St Margarets
Decent sized pub with plenty of seating.Visited yesterday whilst there was a charity street fair -including music- going on outside....Quite bizarre to see John,Paul,George & Ringo doing there thing, with the atmospheric dry ice being unintentionally supplied by the chorizo stall next to the stage......
18 Sep 2005 10:28
With the various TV's & large screen,it appears to be an upmarket sports bar;didn't rate the service too highly.
18 Sep 2005 10:20
The staff were entertaining-especially whilst pouring my "bargain of the century"pint of Carling for 2.05.
Not a great atmosphere, but surely it must be the only pub in London which has what appears to be a section of seating made out of a bouncy castle!...
18 Sep 2005 10:15
My 1st visit was yesterday, have to say that the ervice was absolutely spot on.Can`t write about ale quality as I Was on Hogey-whish was excellent.
Really loved the look of the pub-to sum it up'BIG WOOD'...Very chunky tables & chairs...Big Candles in Big holders...
18 Sep 2005 10:10
The Hook, Line and Sinker, Twickenham
2.70 a pint for London Pride,so not too bad if you're drinking the house brew.Wasn't a bad pint...Sat
in the leather chairs (near the window)-in which you sink so low that you feel as if you're viewing the pub from the basement....Strange but true-I Hope!
18 Sep 2005 10:02
Pub looks like its been moved in from the kent countryside....well fitted out with some pleasant beers.-in the 2.30 to 2.70 price range so not too bad for these parts...situated on a surprisingly quaint street.
18 Sep 2005 09:50
agree about the friendliness of the staff.Drinkikng Kronenborg so can't write about the beer....though I thought I'd jaunted into an episode of Land Of The Giants when I saw the size of the bottles on the mantlepiece.....
18 Sep 2005 09:37
Had an excellent pint of Adnams Broadside yesterday, the service was very quick and attentive.Sat outside in a very pleasant atmosphere-looks a decent pub to me...
18 Sep 2005 09:32
Richard John Blackler, Liverpool
Fairly predictable Wethers-usually with a fair sized crowd in it.
29 Aug 2005 19:24
Decent L shaped pub, good food, nice layout & usually filled with lots of younger sober women(unusual for a Wethers pub).
29 Aug 2005 19:16
Friendly backstreet local, which looks like its been unchanged for decades...Decent beer. The daytime punters aren`t too young. You do (unintentionally..!)eavesdrop on other peoples conversation due to the pubs layout
29 Aug 2005 19:12
Awful beer(as I`v learnt in the past)-so stick to something they can`t ruin....The pub itself is one of the best you`ll visit-the main room looks like its come straight from a 'members club, somewhere in London'...The gents is ornately tiled-it makes you want to drink lots more -thats if there was anything worth drinking(brewery take note)!!
29 Aug 2005 19:07
'Bric a Brac Oscar to Peter Kavanaghs'!!...which stands on a side street near the Anglican Cathedral(in an area of Liverpool with some impressively solid housing).
They do give you a curious little look if you`re not a local in the pub,but its well worth a look, though the beer has been of a varied standard when I`ve called
29 Aug 2005 18:20
The Everyman Bistro, Liverpool
Decent foreign lagers on draught (Used to have a Hoegaarden-now I`ve moved on... )... Usually have a pit stop here as the food is spot on(good selection of food from a servery)...Usually a late 20`s /early 30`s agegroup.
29 Aug 2005 18:10
Great beer, great tiled seating area(with lofted ceiling) and no scallies...One of my favourite Liverpool pubs, though it took me a few minutes to find it.
29 Aug 2005 18:04
Spot on boozer,Its been quieter than expected when I`ve visited(although it is a little out of the way)...Had some great beer here.Remember having Anchor Porter on draught here a couple of years back (Yankee Nectar)!
Like the rather ramshackle set of beer posters on the way to the toilets....Long may this pub continue -Good Health!
29 Aug 2005 17:45
Nice place to start a crawl-because the lunchtime food(particularly the sausages)...are excellent!..The drawback is that if you`re in early the beer can be hit & miss (due to the vast selection of beers?)...But when you get the right one,its the business!
29 Aug 2005 17:37
First pub visited in Prague...thought they wouldn`t wait on us cos we`re Brits(waited @ 20 minutes for the 1st beer)-realised later that it was just sheer incompetence....As you you do get decent service When its not busy.
Cheapish beer (24cr) and a decent pub with a good mixture of locals & a few tourists(open till 1am)-sat downstairs at the back.....Had the pigs knee for dinner-which comes suspended on a metal rack.on a wooden block(220Cr)-watch out fot the fiery horseradish!
29 Aug 2005 16:59
'Votch out vor my command-Zen ve vill invade Prague, unt ze rest off ze vorld vill be OURS'!
Middle aged Germans getting their knees up to Frau Braun.....Oompah band etc-Looked like an edited scene from The Odessa File.
Couple of large rooms & a big courtyard-makes for lots of punters...Flek dark beer (49cr) is very tasty & pretty strong.Waiters do try to get you on the shorts...Worth checking out for a couple of beers
29 Aug 2005 16:48
Brit central....beer not much cop.Was only handy for catching up with cricket/football news off Sky Sports
29 Aug 2005 16:38
Cracking beer, particularly liked the dark-which goes down well. The Wheat beer wasn`t bad either.
Food was good & the service was excellent(for Prague)!
29 Aug 2005 16:36
Good atmosphere, lots of small groups of Brits having a good time.Beer was hit & miss
29 Aug 2005 16:33
The Shakespeare Tavern, Durham
Very disappointed with my last visit here....Only 1 ale-a vinegary stout...on sale.Slack service from a young guy who was too busy talking to his mates...Pity because I`ve always liked this place...
Hopefully a one off.
20 Aug 2005 15:09
Decent Hogshead...Beer was on good form & the food was cheap & cheerful.
20 Aug 2005 15:05
Daytime 'sit & chill' bar...Some good foreign beers & decent food.......Another rejuvenated part of Newc`astle....Was in the pubs around here about 20 years ago & they made `Get Carter`look like Mary Poppins!!
20 Aug 2005 15:02
Good studey/slacker atmosphere...Beer was pretty decent
20 Aug 2005 14:55
Nice views...both of the building & the young ladies frequenting it!....Easy to flop into the seats-extremely hard to find your way back through the door after sampling the various beers & shorts!!
20 Aug 2005 14:53
Another great looking pub with a variety of styles in the different rooms-I like the covered area/bar in what looks like a courtyard.Service was pretty good whilst I was there...Although it appeared to be more 'smooth' & bottles oriented than most Wethers pubs....Worth a look
20 Aug 2005 14:47
Very good beer selection, was in there during the week & it was fairly quiet. But well worth checking out-especially if you`re up for an 'all you can eat'Chinese buffet,in Chinatown-which runs alongside the pub.**TOP BONUS**
20 Aug 2005 14:39
Top looking pub, fairly cramped-think you reserve the chairs 6 months in advance here!
But the beer I had (Jennings)was far better than I`d previously tasted....Stop off on your way to the Quayside.
20 Aug 2005 14:29
Great pub interior on a par with the best I`ve seen, with lots of standing space & various quality beers to match!! Another Newc`astle institution.
20 Aug 2005 14:24
Had some cracking pints here from various breweries.spacious traditional interior to it & small area at the back to check out the Tyne...Well worth adding to a Newc'astle pub crawl.
20 Aug 2005 14:20
Top 'REAL' pub....Good well kept beer, great beery atmosphere traditional boozer with no pompous gits around!
20 Aug 2005 14:13
Good pub...YOU`RE HAVIN A LARF!....Feels like an empty storeroom during the day & a half empty common room during the evening...Give it a miss
20 Aug 2005 14:08
Nice looking pub-but got the definite feeling that I was 20 years too young for the place-by the looks of the weathered regulars....Didn`t rate the fabled beer either

When I visited here.The pub looked great,good atmosphere,lots of different beers....But I tried 3 and they were all rank....Theres a big difference between choice(excellent) & taste(horrible).

Great pub, always stop off for a pint if I'm around Shudehill. 'Salt of the earth' older locals and a top pint of Holts- if that's not your idea of a pub, try shopping.
