Good beer in quite a small pub. It's rough and ready so don't go thinking this is a romantic pub. It's a basic boozer with good beer. The landlord seemed to lack a little bit of a sense of humour, maybe he was having a bad day. Overall ok

Ok pint of timmy taylors landlord. Locals seem a bit parochial and hostile. no scratchings . big telly so unfortunately football is on.
25 Dec 2012 22:28
Had a lovely meal recently, well yesterday. Good beer ; Black Sheep. Super Pork Belly . Great service. Re comment of landlord, we thought last time he seemed odd and i definately would not return if i had witnessed that behaviour. He was fine when we visited but he does seem to hold court with his cronies at the bar.
25 Feb 2012 20:17
Visited recently. Good basic pub food. Have eaten here before and food excellent. 2 guest beers. Pedigree and Hobgoblin

The Jekyll and Hyde, Edinburgh
Interesting Decor , pretty average beer and not real ale. Awful music, i mean truly awful. Avoid if you wish to stay sane.
5 Dec 2011 14:27
Superb. Stayed in Elterwater and went in every night. Yes the food is on the more expensive side but it's very good. The service is incredibly friendly and they are welcoming of dogs. It can get busy but everyone mucks along together and that's the attraction.

The Stickle Barn Tavern, Great Langdale
We went recently. We were in the ODG but the service was so lousy we didn't order food and gave the Sticklebarn a try. I was impressed by the friendly welcome then a great beer selection and really lovely snack. I heartily recommend this pub.

Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Ambleside
I am amazed at the positive feedback for this pub. I visited recently , the service was downright rude. Beer was ok. Pub was dirty as was the grotty outside. There are much better pubs nearby. This pubs rests on it's previous reputation which is a shame.

The Foresters Arms, Carlton in Coverdale
Visited recently , virtually ignored by stroppy barmaid, most unhelpful. Won't return.
28 Feb 2011 20:15
Visited this week, good pint of Theakstons. Friendly Landlord. Food was good honest pub food, 7.95 for Fishemans Pie. Lovely atmosphere. Dog friendly and slap in the middle of Swadul walking country, what more could you want?
26 Feb 2011 11:33
Very impressed by visit this friday. great selection of beer.Friendly staff.
7 Nov 2010 19:34
Why o why did I go in? I was a bit pissed. They'd run out of beer on a fri night, how basic is that? Music was good thou
7 Nov 2010 19:32
Went in on Friday. Friendly enough bar staff. Cheap ale. Clientele were distinctly dodgy, looked like gangsters. I was a bit scared.

The Milburn Arms, Rosedale Abbey
This pub is not closed. I don't know why metrology man has posted this but it seems odd that he also listed the other pub in Rosedale Abbey as closed and it is not.
10 Oct 2010 19:56
Visited in the last week. Very impressed by the friendly welcome , range of beer and good food. Well done. We had sea food platter 22.95 for two, very nice. I thoroughly recommend this pub.
9 Oct 2010 17:02
Good beer and friendly atmosphere. Good food. sheep on the roof, yep, you've not had too many! And it's playing a violin.
26 Sep 2010 15:38
Ye Olde Fighting Cocks, Arnside
Good basic spacious pub. Reasonably friendly welcome. Food fine , not that adventurous, just basic pub fodder. Worth popping in if you're passing but prob not worth going out of your way to.
19 Sep 2010 17:00
Quite frankly I am amazed at people rating a pub poorly because it doesn't take the method of payment they wish to proffer. Surely one has some cash ??? This pub is superb, a shining beacon of a pub of how to do it! Other pubs which may take debit cards are pale comparisons.
18 Sep 2010 18:06
Beer in the evening quotes are highly prized: my last comment now appears on the Kingshead Website. Still a great pub , well done.
18 Sep 2010 17:55
The Chequers Inn, Dalton On Tees
Markh seems to be an 'interested party' . Maybe better to wait for independent reviews. I shall visit soon and post my impartial review.
12 Sep 2010 19:46
Stayed here recently, room dirty and smelled awful, possibly due to a history of smokers yuk!! Beer : no handpulled ale all keg , cheap enough thou and friendly.
Food, remarkable value. Carnforth is a desert, not worth visiting for anything but the Station and just go thru that. you'll thank me for it.
12 Sep 2010 09:25
The Hare and Hounds, Bowland Bridge
Very impressed by my first pint of Landlord , second was off thou and sent back. Not unfriendly but hardly welcoming. Didn't try the food but looked good. Landlord will be moving on shortly so watch this space.
12 Sep 2010 09:22
Disappointing and overpriced , better pubs and value are available.
12 Sep 2010 08:56
John Peel Inn, Bowness on Windermere
Went in last few days. Rude and brusque staff. Overpriced beer , very average food. Avoid
12 Sep 2010 07:51
Food very nice ; Spanish and Greek. good wine and beer selection. Service is patchy , some very good , some distinctly average.
21 Apr 2010 22:08
Still a great pub , just how English pubs should be , warm , welcoming and friendly. good beer at reasonable prices and excellent food.
24 Mar 2010 12:56
The Chequers Inn, Dalton On Tees
reopened with tenant landlord , fingers crossed for better service and food
24 Mar 2010 12:51
Good basic boozer, recently changed hands so watch this space. The Belhaven Best was very drinkable but sadly only on electric. Drummore and area is worth a visit if a little isolated.
17 Mar 2010 19:39
The Port Logan Inn, Port Logan
Fantastic Pub in a great setting. 2,000 acres of Sky was filmed here. Def worth a visit.
17 Mar 2010 19:37
I got absolutely hammered here after completing the Coast to Coast, been back loads since, great pub , good memories, here's to my mate lee
1 Mar 2010 11:26
I agree with the dirty and dingy description. The beer is great as are the views but the pub needs a refurb desperately. the food is basic but expensive. Ok but nothing to shout about pub.
1 Mar 2010 11:14
We had a beautiful meal here on the night we were engaged. Friendly, warm welcome and lovely pint of Mordue. Nice to be offered lime or lemon for a gin and tonic too. I highly recommend this pub.
1 Mar 2010 11:12
This looks interesting. Me and the lads will be visiting Scarboro' so we may well pop in and same some beer.
20 Jan 2010 10:30
Went in 2 days ago. We were greeted by a lovely warming log fire and a big smile from a friendly barmaid. A very well kept pint of Black Sheep , then some toasties. Great warm friendly atmosphere . It's a fantastic bonus that this pub is so dog friendly especially as the beach is close. Other pubs should learn just how easy it is to accept dogs and look at the increase in trade.
22 Nov 2009 08:51
No idea what pub oldboots went in but not Pennyweight. Definately not a chav dump. Beer is always well kept. If the beer was so bad you'd leave 3/4 pint then why not complain? Weird.
2 Nov 2009 21:50
Visited this week , lovely pint of Charles Wells and then Broomstick Bitter. All beer was great and friendly welcome , this pub is superb.
31 Oct 2009 16:26
2 real ales on ; Theakstons and Deuchars. Deuchars was very nice. The barmans welcome wasn't friendly or unfriendly just 'grey' dull, uninterested.
The food took a fair while to come but it was good and usual pub prices; Beef in Ale Pie 7.50. Overall, i'd go in if i were passing but not make a special trip there.
31 Oct 2009 16:17
Went recently at quarter to 9. Chef decided he'd had enough and shut down all food. We had phoned in advance to ask when they served food until and were told 9.
I've never been that impressed by the food although the beer is usually ok.
There are better pubs nearby in Hurworth: bay Horse or Otter and Fish
29 Sep 2009 13:21
Looked foward to this but i was disappointed. Miserable landlord who just wasn't bothered. Beer was good thou. Prob visit again but could do with friendlier welcome.
27 Sep 2009 20:09
Visited in February so review bit out of date . It was excellent , great beer and cracking food. Dogs allowed too. Would def recommend.
27 Sep 2009 20:03
Great pub , impressed every time i visit. Dogs welcome . Great Beer. This is how to run a pub!!!!
27 Sep 2009 19:58
This is the sister pub to pub in Fadmoor. They have an incredibly confusing policy on dogs in pub. You can bring them in if you book a table in the dining room but they are not allowed in the bar:bizarre to let them in a dining room (but only if you book) and not the bar. I was confused so rang back and the staff reiterated this frankly odd policy. Didn't visit, put off by weird rules.
27 Sep 2009 19:39
Only one beer :Speckled Hen but... well kept. Veggie food good and very reasonable. Really interesting pub
27 Sep 2009 19:35
Fantastic and how true was last comment , well said mate!!
Went in after a walk on the beach with our dogs , gave us towels to dry them :really friendly. Great beer and food and a great quiz on Tuesdays. Definately will visit many times!!!
23 Feb 2009 13:00
Went in yesterday, fantastic beer, great choice. A really nice two room pub with tiny smoking room and small 'lounge', all wood panelled. Definately visit if you go to the Wilberforce Museum (well worth a visit) as this has big links to the slave trade.
23 Feb 2009 12:57
Really impressed by this pub. Had Sunday Carvery 5.90 and tasty. Really friendly staff , great Marstons Pedigree. Definately will visit again and Hull is blessed with many fine pubs.
23 Feb 2009 12:54

27 Jan 2009 13:31
Very impressed with this good honest English Pub. Beer very well kept, friendly enough, Warm on a cold day. Recommended.
27 Jan 2009 13:26
Beer is usually ok. Service can be slow when it's busy.
Food can be very indifferent.
Real hit and miss pub.
27 Jan 2009 13:25
The ale is still excellent. I thoroughly recommend this pub!
16 Jan 2009 13:20
The Monsal Head Hotel, Monsal Head
We visited last weekend. The Stables Bar had 'computer' problems and we couldn't order food. Member of staff polite . So , we went into the Hotel which we found had exactly the same menu and could get real ale from the Stables Bar. The large dining room was empty apart from one other couple. We enquired about a table, the rather officious waiter offered us a table by two busy doors. I naturally wanted one by the fire which we were told was reserved. It wasn't! Noone came to it. The service was extremely slow at times (30 min wait for a coffee). Other people were turned down for the 'non-reserved 'tables. A bizarre place!!! The beer was ok as was food but service was abysmal.
16 Jan 2009 13:18
Number 22 Alehouse and Canteen, Darlington
Superb place to meet your old Geography Teacher. Try and lever some bar-hog out of the way to order a Over priced and often quite average pint. Then wait for some pratt in a pin-stripe to knock you whilst he and his drunk mates guffaw at mortgage rate changes. This pub could be so much better than it is!!
5 Jan 2009 11:11
Welcoming Pub, just saved by the community. Hopefully now it will go from strength to strength. I urge you all to visit to support this great pub. Good Beer and lovely fired , dog friendly too. Website also. Not tried food but looked good.
5 Jan 2009 11:04
Visited Yesterday at Lunchtime. Very quiet when we went in with two dogs , welcoming even thou our dogs nearly demolished a table. Food reasonably priced. Very very nice pint of Black Sheep, shame there aren't more real ales on Tap , just Theakstons too. Clean , warm and friendly , definately worth a visit.
5 Jan 2009 10:57
The Chequers Inn, Dalton On Tees
Unfortunately had a meal recently. Food overcooked and sent back. Service ok but smarmy over bearing Landlord is still there. Most locals alienated by him. Prices skyrocket when it's track day at the local Croft Circuit. Could never recommend it.
23 Aug 2008 23:24
Fleapit of a pub , went in , noone behind bar , waited and waited. Eventually a youth appeared who seemed more interesting in singing to the awful music than serving me. Beer avaerage. No quiz now on mondays , lack of interest , can see why. Not good!
23 Aug 2008 23:21
Shame if this has become all parochial,it was my local in the late 80s when Tom ran it , he was a taster for Timothy Taylors and a better pint you wouldn't have. Hope to visit soon and will fill in a report.
23 Apr 2008 00:17
The Chequers Inn, Dalton On Tees
Unfortunately had to visit with friends, it lived it to my poor expectations. Beer was poor, food dull and unimaginative. staff harassed constantly by the bullying over-bearing smarmy Landlord. Do not visit this dump!
31 Mar 2008 10:28
The Old Poet's Corner, Ashover
Beer is of good standard , food gone off a bit , not as good as it once was.
31 Mar 2008 10:25
Wowee Steve, you can read and then recite the board outside , well done!
Had a cracking Pint of Adnams Broadside and Cockerhoop.
Great Sunday Lunch and lovely Eton Mess Roulade.
They serve food all day on Sundays to 7pm , so no need to rush your walk in this lovely bit of Derbyshire.
29 Mar 2008 00:14
It's rare for pubs to get this good , but nellies achieves it by a country mile. Many happy memories here.Beer is superb too and atmosphere fantastic.
14 Mar 2008 19:07

11 Mar 2008 16:24
Spent a great evening here , very friendly , lovely folk. Dog friendly . Breakfasts are smashing too. Stay a week.
11 Mar 2008 16:23
On a freezing cold day they wouldn't let my dog in , welcome to scotland , miserable tossers. don't darken it's doors.
11 Mar 2008 16:21
a very very good pub . Friendly , good food and great beer. They kindly let the Lyke Wake Race use their car park for a race checkpoint. I have visited this pub on many occasions and in all weathers and never been disappointed. Have a wander along the old railway line , you may see an adder in spring and summer. Definately visit!!
11 Mar 2008 16:18
I went and had great beer and cracking food, very friendly . Worth a visit.
11 Mar 2008 16:14
When i went it was ok , that's about it , nothing special , which for a prime location is a shame. The beer was ok, the room was a bit chilly in winter despite being busy. Must do better i think.
11 Mar 2008 16:13
Decent honest pub with good beer. Friendly staff. well worth a visit.
11 Mar 2008 16:10
One of the most hideous of all hideous hell holes.
Anyone who recommends this pub needs sectioning. The beer is cheap because it's rubbish , music is awful and you are guaranteed to see a fight break out sooner or later.
If that's your think, go along.
11 Mar 2008 16:08
The Quaker Coffee House, Darlington
Had a rare bad pint in here , it was exchanged no fuss. If i could make one suggestions it's that the bar staff cheer up , they have quite poor customer skills. Apart from that it's ok.
11 Mar 2008 16:06
Ok if you like squealing kids and the waft of stale food. Not a pleasant experience when i went, although others have said it's ok. service was slow.
11 Mar 2008 16:04
This has changed it's name yet again. It's still a bit of a dump.
11 Mar 2008 16:02
Still a good pub with Black sheep , deuchars and Magnet on Handpull. Good food too during the day. Quiz still excellent Tuesdays 9pm.
11 Mar 2008 16:01
Good pub , fine beer and well kept , shame it isn't in the middle of darlington.
11 Mar 2008 15:59
Dull , huge estate pub with THE most tedious and mind numbingly awful quiz. Not a pub to go in , more to go past.
11 Mar 2008 15:56
Glad to say that this is still a great pub . Chicken races in summer too.
Great beer and food. Not forgetting the warm folk of Bonsa'
7 Mar 2008 17:31
Good pub since change of owners a few years ago. Dog friendly . Lots of good walking nearby then a nice meal , what better way to spend a day.
7 Mar 2008 17:28
Hideous hell hole of a pub , full of dossers. Went in December and it was absolutely freezing. No real ale now. Uninterested staff. Avoid!!

The Glittering Star, Darlington
You've entered the Twilight Zone if you're in The Star. May your God go with you.....you'll probably need it.
11 Oct 2006 00:32
It's not as grim as that.It won't win pub of the year but it's a decent honest boozer. Wait here or the ever lengthening queue in Somerfield ( only to be served by an in bred), I know my choice.
10 Oct 2006 11:41
The Bridge of Orchy Hotel, Bridge Of Orchy
Good for the Bunkhouse too. I met two great girls here, a good night was had by all!!!

The Railway Tavern, Darlington
Pleasantly suprised , thought it'd be like 'Dusk til Dawn', well it was a bit but friendly enough and a good stop off on way to The Central Borough
10 Oct 2006 03:59
Quiet pint in the Tanners Dell72??? When do you go? Try Sat eve , it's a seething mass of Skerne Park hardcases getting lashed up ready for action. Quaint decor; brains and blood.
10 Oct 2006 03:08
popular with Northern Echo crowd, Milburn was seen pissed in here . Beer ok .
10 Oct 2006 03:05
Heard it was bad but it's not! It's actually quite a nice pub and I dropped my phone without knowing and was handed it back , so they're not all thieves. Try it.
10 Oct 2006 03:00
you would only go in this hell hole if you're trollied already. Do not enter this horrible flea pit , you're worth more than that
10 Oct 2006 02:57
Shoulder of Mutton, Middleton Tyas
My god, what are you like , you're ratinga pub on your perception of it's class. Did you actually enjoy it ? Personally being a worker and so by your definition ;working class, I like it. Food is excellent and down the road is a really cracking Scots pine.
10 Oct 2006 00:11
A good stop for those on Coast to coast or Cleveland Way.It's a checkpoint on the annual Lyke Wake Race (42 miles since u ask and yes i have run it!). Stayed here a few years ago, welcome break.
10 Oct 2006 00:06
The New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale
Not been for a while so i must have been in a bad spell will return. Chips were the only redeeming feature, oh and the view
9 Oct 2006 20:16
Used to be a good pub , but now it' very overpriced. But you are sort of stuck if you're on the coast to coast walk, go down the road to Glenridding, the bar is cold but cheaper, much cheaper.
9 Oct 2006 20:14
The Derby Tup, Whittington Moor

9 Oct 2006 19:57
Fantastic little boozer , beer is well kept and atmospere fine n' dandy. I'm not a local but I didn't think it was a pub from Royston Vasey. Maybe Dell72 should purchase his T shirt, sounds a good idea, sod it I'm gonna get one myself.
9 Oct 2006 19:53
The Quaker Coffee House, Darlington

Number 22 Alehouse and Canteen, Darlington
The Beer is good but pricey which suits the suits.Very much the 'Darlo crowd' who eye folk up . Very cliquey. Small thing but bogs are pathetic for such an establishment.

Number 22 Alehouse and Canteen, Darlington
I do have to agree with some of the views. It can get conjested and often with people i'd usually cross the road to avoid. The beer is good but expensive relative to the rest of Darlo. Good place to see your old Geography teacher.
