Went in here years roughly twenty years ago I'd imagine and absolutely hated it, vowing never to return. (Seem to remember it all being set upstairs for some reason??) Went in here again over Easter weekend this year in glorious weather and thought it was very nice indeed. Admittedly, I didn't eat, nor did I sit inside - but I did enjoy my pint of the Barngates stout and the welcome from the chatty barman - going outside to drink my beer on the patio area in the shade of a big umbrella. Would try again for an evening next time I'm in the valley. littledrummerboy - 21 Apr 2014 17:50 |
Had used this pub several times in the past and really enjoyed the good food and great beer, and the staff were lovely, BUT the last time we visited was AFTER the National Trust had taken over in 2012. A walking group of about 15 of us had decided this was a good lunch stop - WRONG! We all agreed that the food was somewhere between mediocre and awful AND very expensive to boot. The other pub nearby that the NT also run gets terrible reviews as well - the NT are great at saving stately homes but absolute rubbish at catering. They have ruined what was once a great pub and none of us will return there either as individuals or as a group. Chas13 - 25 Apr 2013 00:17 |
We went recently. We were in the ODG but the service was so lousy we didn't order food and gave the Sticklebarn a try. I was impressed by the friendly welcome then a great beer selection and really lovely snack. I heartily recommend this pub. mineisalandlord - 22 Oct 2011 19:13 |
Excellent spot for morning breakfast (full english with tea/coffee for 7) with a good choice of beer and fair choice of food for the evening. As mentioned previously the menu is fairly uninspiring compared to the nearby ODG, which seems to have a more home made feel and certainly compared to The Britannia in Elterwater. The beer though is always on good form and the staff, notably the manager, couldn't be more welcoming. BothamsAshes - 5 Aug 2011 16:30 |
A bit smarter and touristy than the ODG , but great beer and food with a much appreciated wood burner roaring away after a tab up the hills. Dog friendly(free biscuits, just a donation to the mountain rescue) and good seating outside, just need to solve the wiff of the sceptic tanks, but still a top pub. so good we never made it to the New dungeon ghyll next door. ian241 - 2 Jun 2010 21:38 |
