Union Hotel, Sheffield

Certainly a friendly community pub, with a decent choice of beer. Nothing that particularly stands out, but isn't that enough?

White Lion, Sheffield

Pleasant pub with a wonderful interior. The oldest building in the area, although you wouldn't know it from its mid-terrace position.

Wonderful interior, with lots of snugs and traditional decor. Beer choice is not as good as it might be, but has gradually improved and is generally well-kept.

Although it's a couple of miles from the town centre, it's easily accessible and a trip be combined with the nearby Sheaf View.

11 Feb 2011 15:02

Bridge Inn, Sheffield

Has now closed. Was nothing special and couldn't compete with the fantastic Sheaf View so close by.

11 Feb 2011 14:59

Earl of Stafford, Hooton Roberts

Mostly a pub for food. The food is not cheap, but the quality is fine and the choice is good. Reasonable choice of drinks.

The Nottingham House, Sheffield

Has swung between being perfectly good and pretty awful over the last few years. Recently, it's been pretty good, with a reasonable choice of ales and very tasty pies, although service can be slow. Lively but with a few quieter corners, too. One of the better pubs around Broomhill.

The Interval, Sheffield

Surprisingly good student union bar. Has a reasonable range of ales (not always well kept), plus very cheap but tasty food, and a large beer garden (shared with Bar One; you can take drinks through). Generally open to all during the day, but students and their guests only during the evenings. Sometimes has unnecessarily loud music - or maybe I'm just getting old!

28 Oct 2010 15:00

Sheffield Tap, Sheffield

Lovely place with a great range of Thornbridge ales and plenty of guests (including bottles). Furnishings are very pleasant - give the appearance that they might have been there for decades, even though it's been open less than a year.

Only problem is a shortage of seating - not that you could fit many more tables in. That, and you're not supposed to exit directly onto the platform, so you have to remember to leave enough time to go out and back through the main station entrance before your train leaves!

28 Oct 2010 14:57

Harlequin, Sheffield

Good pub with a large selection of well-kept beers. Sometimes feels a bit overly busy, though that just reflects its popularity. Small yard out back isn't great, particularly with the industrial-strength extractor fan blowing across the tables. But these are minor quibbles; it's basically very good, and makes a fine alternative to the excellent Kelham Island Tavern, Fat Cat and other "Valley of Beer" pubs.

28 Oct 2010 14:40

Platillos, Sheffield

Although under the same ownership as the Wig and Pen, Platillo's is very different. It has the feeling of an expensive chain bar, and indeed their intention is apparently to test the market and develop this into a chain.

Downstairs is a popular bar, decked out in many different kinds of wood and somewhat bizarrely a dresser complete with plates. The bar has a lively atmosphere in the evening, but is dead during daytimes. It serves an unusual range of beers, generally very good, although there's barely one I've seen anywhere else. Prices are high by Sheffield standards, as are those of the tasty bar snack menu.

Upstairs is a tapas restaurant, where prices are reasonable and the food is apparently very good.

Old Red Lion, Grenoside

Visited this pub a couple of weeks ago; a sign states that it is under new management. It had a reasonable selection of beer, decent decor and a sizeable (although rather unkempt) beer garden. I opted for an orange juice and was rather disappointed that it was not only rather dear but was served in a shot glass! The dire music - "Celtic" remakes of various pop songs - was enough to get me out the door pretty quickly.

10 Jun 2008 00:51

University Arms, Sheffield

Formerly the 197 Club, this is now more obviously open to non-academics and is busier. It has long had a good beer selection, and the pleasant beer garden is now more popular. Also has some under-used function rooms upstairs. The best pub in the area.

19 May 2008 21:12

Sheffield University Bar 1, Western Bank

This is not the University Arms; it is the main bar of the student union. The beer garden (shared with the slightly dearer Interval Bar, home to better food and beer) is very nice; inside Bar One, it's pretty cheap but often heaving, and has a poor selection of beer.

The place does have a big, popular pool room and some cheap pizzas available, and the Raynor Lounge club venue lies immediately off the bar - you can take drinks through, should you so wish.

19 May 2008 21:09

The Snake Pass Inn, Bamford

The only pub for literally miles around, the Snake primarily caters for diners; there are only a few tables inside at which you can drink without eating.

When I called in recently, there were a couple of decent real ales on, and the service was reasonable. If you are walking to the pub, beware that it is currently closed all day Mondays, on Sunday evenings, and probably on Tuesdays as well.

19 May 2008 21:00

The Cow and Calf, Grenoside

I called in the other day, and was pleasantly surprised. The pub is in what appears to be a converted farmhouse, on a country lane. The farmyard is now a very pleasant beer garden, which was packed on the sunny day I visited. Inside was also busy, but with three rooms, there were a few seats to be had.

The beers are the typical Sam Smith's, average quality but with the usual low prices - 1.39 for a pint of Old Brewery Bitter. There was a broad mix of people, many of whom appeared to be regulars, and a friendly atmosphere. Service was fine, and quick given how busy the place was. I'll definitely return.

13 May 2008 00:37

The Lions Lair, Sheffield

Re-opened under new management, but much the same as before. Went in early evening, when it was very quiet, and several beers were off, but the service was friendly and efficient, and the music is now a little lower.

1 Apr 2008 00:31

The Brown Bear, Sheffield

Newly refurbished, and as usual, Sam Smith's have made a nice job of it. Crowd seems to be much the same as before, and fortunately the prices are still very low.

1 Apr 2008 00:29

The Leathern Bottle, Godalming

Not my cup of tea - the beer was good, but the atmosphere was very unwelcoming to this non-regular. There's a lot to be said for a pub for locals which doesn't change with passing fashions, but surely it wouldn't hurt to redecorate some time?

1 Apr 2008 00:24

The Rose and Crown, Godalming

Popped in recently. Only one of the three real ales was on, but still had a good night. Very good atmosphere, enjoyed a game of darts and the beer that was on was well kept. Beware - the toilets are freezing cold and you have to cross a courtyard to get to them.

1 Apr 2008 00:21

The Inn On The Lake, Godalming

Couldn't agree more with surreydiner below. Almost very good, but could do with friendlier service.

1 Apr 2008 00:19

The Manor Inn, Godalming

Popped in for a drink when it was miserable outside. Garden would be great on a pleasant day, as it leads down to the river. Beer pretty poor, and the place doesn't really cater for drinkers, although we were made fairly welcome. For some reason, not only was music blaring out, but also the TV was on full blast. Toilets also in an unpleasant state. Only worth a visit on a sunny day to sit by the river.

1 Apr 2008 00:17

Dempsey's Bar, Sheffield

Very much a bar for the LGBT community in Sheffield. Poor choice of beers, but decent food. Big dancefloor upstairs and lots of entertainment. Quite a steep entry charge in the evening, but free during the day.

1 Apr 2008 00:11

Shakespeare Hotel, Sheffield

Nice big pub, currently stripped of pretty much all its non-original decor, and quite bare. Presumably this is only temporary.

Huge yard at the back is very popular. The upstairs room is used for lots of gigs, although it is not best suited, as the only entrance is in front of the stage and the sound desk. Friendly staff and atmosphere and a decent choice of beers, but when I went, they didn't appear too well kept.

A good pub with lots of potential, but has some fierce competition from the nearby Kelham Island, Fat Cat and Riverside.

1 Apr 2008 00:09

Sheaf House, Sheffield

Lovely building, and could be a great pub. Very close to Sheffield United's Bramall Lane ground, and plastered with old team photos and other memorabilia. Fairly welcoming, but beer unexciting and lacking in atmosphere except on match days.

1 Apr 2008 00:05

Little John Hotel, Hathersage

Good beer, food basic but cheap and filling. Service not great when I've been.

13 Mar 2008 22:36

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Castleton

Good food, good beer, pleasant surroundings - no complaints!

13 Mar 2008 22:33

The Red Lion Inn, Litton

Haven't been in some time, but have always found it extremely friendly, with good beer and an idyllic location. An excellent choice - highly recommended.

13 Mar 2008 22:32

The Anglers Rest, Millers Dale

Great location, good beer and friendly enough staff. Food only served at limited times, and muddy boots (which I've always had when I've been) are only permitted in one rather bare and not very comfortable bar. I suspect the other bar is nicer.

13 Mar 2008 22:30

Cricketers Arms, Sheffield

A pub with a split personality. Downstairs, it can be a fairly miserable boozer for locals, or it can be thronged with Sheffield United fans - the ground is over the road. Management changes fairly often, and most use the upstairs room for gigs, which livens the place up no end.

13 Mar 2008 22:03

The Vine Inn, Sheffield

Nice pub; area outside at the back is ideal for summer. Something of a variable reputation, but I've always had a very pleasant evening.

13 Mar 2008 22:01

The Bedroom, Sheffield

Miserable bar, seems to thrive off none-too-choosy pub crawling freshers. Not cheap, and the much patched "bed" is somewhat tacky.

13 Mar 2008 21:44

Revolution, Sheffield

Large but expensive vodka bar. OK for a busy night out, but no atmosphere when it's quiet.

13 Mar 2008 21:42

The Devonshire Arms, Baslow

Very friendly service and a nicely laid out series of bars partially made up for several problems: the food was not very good, one of the beers was undrinkable and a replacement was badly kept, and the toilets were in a poor state.

13 Mar 2008 21:32

The Sheaf View, Heeley

Excellent choice of beer, helpful beer staff and a terrace with good views. Some friends have had some trouble with other customers, but the pub itself is very good.

3 Mar 2008 00:10

The Old Horns Inn, High Bradfield

Haven't been in some time, but when I did, the beer was good and the service was very friendly.

3 Mar 2008 00:09

The Toby Carvery, Ecclesall

Wouldn't bother with the food, but the beer is OK, and it's a very pleasant location in the summer, when you can sit outside overlooking the cricket pitch.

3 Mar 2008 00:07

The Dore Moor Inn, Sheffield

Nice enough, with a pleasant location and reasonable beer, but the main feature is the dining area, and the food is unexciting.

3 Mar 2008 00:06

Strines Inn, Bradfield

Fantastic pub, well worth the trip out of Sheffield. Very remote location, lovely old building. Good range of beers and excellent food at reasonable prices. And peacocks in the car park - what more can you ask?

3 Mar 2008 00:03

The HUB, Sheffield Hallam University

Moved to a new location a few years ago, in the former National Centre for Popular Music. Cheap student bar, with pool and fruit machines. Loud music in evenings and poor choice of beers. Food sometimes good and certainly cheap.

3 Mar 2008 00:02

The Wig and Pen by Milestone, Sheffield

Pleasant bar, often busy with solicitors and other local office workers. Nice food, decent beer. Precipitous stairs. Apparently there are plans to expand back to Paradise Square.

3 Mar 2008 00:00

Wetherspoons, Sheffield

A fairly pleasant, purpose-built Wetherspoon's. Generic, as you would expect, but a good location and lighter and airier than most of the chain.

2 Mar 2008 23:58

Swim Inn, Sheffield

One of the less exciting Wetherspoon's. Pretty generic, but darker and dingier than average.

2 Mar 2008 23:57

The Stag, Sheffield

Much improved since their refurb a few years ago. Now has a good choice of beers and tasty food. Reasonable service. Clientele heavy on families during the day.

2 Mar 2008 23:56

The Showroom Bar and Cafe, Sheffield

Expensive, with some nice Belgian beers but overpriced and variable food. Sometimes has DJs or live music on, but less often than in the past, and the quality also seems to have gone down.

2 Mar 2008 23:55

Scholar, Sheffield

Generic studenty pub. No better and no worse than many others. Unexceptional; there are several better pubs and bars nearby.

2 Mar 2008 23:53

The Rutland Arms, Sheffield

Facing an uncertain future, regularly running out of beer and no longer seems to be doing food. They often don't even have any milk for a tea or coffee. A shame, because it has a nice beer garden, friendly staff, and a good choice of real ales when they are actually on.

2 Mar 2008 23:52

The Ruskins, Sheffield

Pricey and unexceptional, but has some reasonable beers, so an OK choice before an evening at the theatre.

2 Mar 2008 23:50

The Runaway Girl, Sheffield

Rather odd decor suggesting a brothel, but usually excellent (if expensive) food. Beer run-of-the-mill and expensive, cocktails good but also expensive. A good range of live acts and DJs most evenings.

2 Mar 2008 23:49

Roebuck Tavern, Sheffield

A bit run down and nothing out of the ordinary. Average beer and sometimes very loud music.

2 Mar 2008 23:45

Red Lion, Sheffield

Nice pub, often quite lively. Great range of beers, also a pool table. Shows a lot of sport, but this is fairly unobtrusive if you're not interested. Small snug bar across from the main bar with a bell to attract service.

2 Mar 2008 23:44

The Red Deer, Sheffield

Fantastic pub, my local when I lived in the area. Far better than anywhere on nearby West Street, the Red Deer has a great choice of real ales and is popular with postgrad students and lecturers from the university. Reasonable food, although service stops early. Excellent themed quizzes on Sunday night.

2 Mar 2008 23:42

The Priory, Sheffield

Almost always very quiet, so little atmosphere. But actually a reasonable pub, with a decent choice of beers.

2 Mar 2008 23:40

The Porter Cottage, Sheffield

Not to be confused with the nearby Porter Brook. One of the better pubs in the Ecclesall Road area, very busy at weekends. Much improved since the smoking ban.

2 Mar 2008 23:39

Porter Brook, Sheffield

Pleasant pub with a good choice of beer. Often extremely busy, and no outside space at all. One of the better pubs in the Ecclesall Road area.

2 Mar 2008 23:37

The Old Queens Head, Sheffield

Lovely building and reasonable beer, but somewhat run down, not particularly friendly, and poor food.

2 Mar 2008 23:35

Old Monk, Sheffield

Big pub in a nice building, but unexciting choice of beers and little atmosphere. Reasonable choice if you want to watch sport in the city centre.

2 Mar 2008 23:34

Nursery Tavern, Sheffield

Usually busy with students, and an unexciting choice of beers, but has a huge beer garden.

2 Mar 2008 23:33

The Nelson, Sheffield

If you don't like rock, don't bother. It's dingy, and short on seating. But the DJs really know their stuff and the choice of beers is also good, so if you are into rock, it's well worth a visit.

2 Mar 2008 23:31

The Museum, Sheffield

Pretty good, nice choice of well kept beer. A little on the pricey side, but very convenient city centre location.

2 Mar 2008 23:29

Sheffield Waterworks Company, Sheffield

Typical Lloyds No 1. Nice building, but variable service and food and unexciting beer.

2 Mar 2008 23:28

The Lions Lair, Sheffield

Now closed.

2 Mar 2008 23:26

The Howard, Sheffield

Cheap but lacklustre food, slightly run down, but reasonable beer.

2 Mar 2008 23:25

Bloo 88, Sheffield

Busy pub, with usually loud music and also TVs. Average beer, but worth a visit for the top quality pizza, particularly if you can make it when it's 2-for-1.

2 Mar 2008 23:24

The Ha Ha Bar, Sheffield

Decent beer, friendly service and nice location, but obviously rather generic decor. One of the better chain bars in the city.

2 Mar 2008 23:22

The Green Room, Sheffield

Expensive, with reasonable selection of bottled beer. Tried the house wine, which was very poor. Hope the more expensive wines are of better quality. Has some pleasant live music, although the layout of the bar means only a limited number of people will get a decent view.

2 Mar 2008 23:21

The Frog and Parrot, Sheffield

Studenty pub, with reasonable live music and OK selection of beer, but not a patch on its heyday ten or fifteen years ago. Nothing too wrong, but nothing out of the ordinary, either.

2 Mar 2008 23:19

The Ship Inn, Sheffield

Disappointing. Nice old building, but rather run down and (when I was there) poorly kept beer. However, I've heard better things from other customers.

2 Mar 2008 23:16

The Riverside Cafe Bar, Sheffield

Sometimes quiet, but a good choice of beers and very pleasant location overlooking the river. One of several excellent pubs in the area.

2 Mar 2008 23:15

The Kelham Island Tavern, Sheffield

Regular winner of best pub in Sheffield or even Yorkshire. Great choice of beers, friendly service and an attractive if small beer garden. One of several excellent pubs in the area.

2 Mar 2008 23:14

The Fat Cat, Sheffield

One of several excellent pubs in this part of town. Good value and a great choice of beers.

2 Mar 2008 23:13

Fagan's, Sheffield

Best place in Sheffield for music sessions, in the back room. Good beer, friendly atmosphere and a lovely little snug bar on your left as you come in. Highly recommended.

2 Mar 2008 23:11

Dog and Partridge, Sheffield

Looks a bit run down, but don't let it put you off. Good beer, particularly the Guinness, and often excellent music sessions in the back room.

2 Mar 2008 23:09

The Devonshire Cat, Sheffield

The best place in Sheffield City Centre for beer. Amazing range, well kept. Friendly service unless it's really busy, which it usually is Friday and Saturday nights. Also has a good range of cider, but not so good for other drinks. Food also very average. But the beer is the point, and it is faultless.

2 Mar 2008 23:08

Cubana, Sheffield

Few people pop in just for a drink, but why would you, when the tapas is so good? Regular live music with a latin theme and excellent sangria. Also has a range of cigars, if that's your thing. Highly recommended.

2 Mar 2008 23:05

Varsity, Sheffield

Not my kind of place, but reasonable if you want to watch sport in a lively bar. Food unexciting but popular.

2 Mar 2008 22:59

Dulo, Sheffield

Not as fancy as it likes to think it is, but the beer is reasonable and the decor is good, with two smaller rooms to get away from the crowds, and a marquee out the back. There are some really good DJs on in the evenings, and the art on the walls is often of good quality. Don't come for a quiet drink, and don't sit out in the back garden if you don't like rats.

2 Mar 2008 22:58

The Old Crown, Sheffield

Didn't try this place for a long time as I was put off by the line of people who always seem to be stood outside. But it's actually got a fantastic interior, and is a lively and large local boozer. Has a small smoking area out the back, and regular karaoke. Beer nothing special.

2 Mar 2008 22:55

The Cremorne, Sheffield

Decent pub, occasionally puts on live music, and has reasonable beer. Friendly atmosphere. Often pop in on my way home from work, when it is always very quiet, but probably the best place on this stretch of London Road.

2 Mar 2008 22:53

Cherry Tree Inn, Sheffield

Local pub, shows a lot of sport. Unexciting selection of beer and not particularly friendly.

2 Mar 2008 22:51

The Boardwalk, Sheffield

Pretty sure this is only open during gigs. Service as good as you could expect, and reasonable beer. More tables than most live music venues, but toilets usually a mess. Has some excellent gigs (Half Man Half Biscuit and The Fall are regulars), but wouldn't recommend it as a pub.

2 Mar 2008 22:49

The Cavendish, Sheffield

Not nice. Packed with students during term time to the point that it's difficult to make it to the bar, dead during university holidays. Poor beer, blaring music. Nothing to recommend.

2 Mar 2008 22:47

The Bankers Draft, Sheffield

Not one of the better Wetherspoon's. Reasonable beer, but poor atmosphere and slow service.

2 Mar 2008 22:44

All Bar One, Sheffield

Tolerable but overpriced and unexciting range of beers. Food decent, but if you like this sort of bar, try Platillos over the road.

2 Mar 2008 22:43

The Kings Arms Royal Hotel, Godalming

Basically the bar of a hotel, but large and reasonable choice of beers. Often very quiet, and indifferent service.

2 Mar 2008 22:41

The Sun Inn, Dunsfold

Fantastic setting and a lovely old building. Food poor since it changed hands last spring. Very expensive, but well worth it in summer, when you can sit out on the village green.

2 Mar 2008 22:39

Rodboro Buildings, Guildford

One of the better Wetherspoons. Huge interior, divided up quite nicely on various levels. Usual choice of beers, decent services although sometimes the bouncers are a bit overeager.

2 Mar 2008 22:36

Ye Olde Ship Inn, Guildford

Very useful location, although with the busy road running past, sitting outside isn't much fun. Good beer and friendly atmosphere.

2 Mar 2008 22:34

The White House, Guildford

Nice location, reasonable decor. Unreliable beer and rather overpriced.

2 Mar 2008 22:32

The George Abbot, Guildford

Feels like one of the better class of chain pubs, has nothing out of the ordinary and a miserable outlook across a car park. Decent beer, but disappointing food.

2 Mar 2008 22:29

The Cricketers, Farncombe

A good pub, nice choice of Fullers beers. Somewhat expensive. Apparently once owned by the cricketer Julius Caesar.

2 Mar 2008 22:24

The Wey Inn, Godalming

Pretty miserable, but good for games - the only place around with a skittle alley, and also has darts and pool.

2 Mar 2008 22:22

Jack George Phillips, Godalming

Big and busy pub, slowish service, reasonable range of beers - a pretty typical Wetherspoons. Despite some posts, I've never seen any issue with the clientele - it's pretty varied, from younger drinkers, to families, to some older drinkers.

2 Mar 2008 22:21

The Red Lion, Godalming

Probably the best pub in Godalming, although the Star runs it close. Great range of beers, and a choice of two bars: one lively with pool table etc, the other ideal for a chat, although often also busy. To get between the two, you have to either go outside, or through the gents toilets.

2 Mar 2008 22:18

The Sun, Godalming

Better than average pub, with good beer. Generally lively in the evenings, particularly if there's sport on.

2 Mar 2008 22:15

The Star, Godalming

Shame the bar billiards has gone, but still a good pub, with an excellent choice of beer.

2 Mar 2008 22:13

The Gardeners Rest, Sheffield

Must be one of the best pubs in the city; a great range of beer, table football, and a small beer garden backing on to the River Don.
