| I've not been in this wonderful old pub for some years mainly due to the complacent attitude of the staff, but on this unexpectedly pleasant evening I decided to pop in for a couple. Well, the couple turned into a session for precisely the opposite reason previously mentioned. The young serving staff were very welcoming and genuinely seemed to care about the beers even to the point of of bringing my pints to my table after they had settled and then been topped up; a complete turn around from before. | Solid old building in beautiful location,scenic views and with a nice beer garden containing crafty thuggish peacocks who chased a screaming customer and her dinner back into the safety of the pub's interior. Because of it's position I mistakenly assumed that the place would be a tourist rip-off just as certain other Peak pubs exploit their locations to charge high prices. So apologies from this jaded old cynic. Food and drink prices were reasonable and the meal quality was good, not marvellous but certainly acceptable. Staff were pleasant and the bar-lad knew how to pull a pint properly with just the right amount of head. For what it's worth I give it my seal of approval. GeofB - 27 Jul 2012 23:37 |
| To start with, this pub appears to have the lot - A great location overlooking Strines Reservoir whilst just a few miles off the main Snake Pass, a traditional old building with three seperate rooms and a nice seated area outside. It really is a nice place, but if I were being just a little picky, it would be that although the beer choie was fine, it was entirely made up of the Marstons portfolio, so 'boasted' Pedigree, Banks bitter, Jenings Cockerhoop and one from Ringwood - the Jennings I tried was pleasant enough, I would have just preferred a little more choice from some of the excellent breweries in the Sheffield area - Lots of people were eating, and this just about didn't spoil the pub atmosphere but it was a close run thing. | Just stayed here (only 1 night sadly!). Great accomodation (4-poster bed), fantastic views for reservoir from room. Evening meal VERY good, not too longa wait although busy, and good sized portions, freshly prepared and excellent quality. Coffee in bar afterwarsd is to die for (so the wife says) - I stuck to the beer, which was well kept, and a good selection (Boondoggle, Wolf Cry and a Jennings - Cockerhoop!). | Very disappointing. The pub was busy, but not especially so. When we ordered our food, we were not told that there was a long delay. We waited, finished our drinks which we were cleared away without interest or comment; after 40 minutes' wait, having realised that others around us who seemed to have ordered after us had been served, we managed to ask one of the staff (it took several attempts to catch someone's eye) whether the food would come soon and were told it would be served in "about two minutes - we only have two cooks on today". After more than 5 minutes, the food arrived, with the comment "Sorry for the wait...". Two of the dishes were no more than OK. The cheese burger was composed of two slices of plain white bread, with a thin, dry-looking burger and some grated cheese straight from the fridge; the chips were overcooked in what appeared to be old fat. The ravioli were presumably microwaved in a very fatty sauce - the pasta was hard and solid (either undercooked or over-microwaved). The wait would have been acceptable had we been warned (or they had owned up to having forgotten our order and tried to make amends), but the quality of the food (especially the fact that the cheese burger did not come in the advertised bun and bore no resemblance to a normal cheese burger) was not, particularly as the food was relatively expensive. We had been invited for a meal, so it was not appropriate to complain about our food, but our hosts were very embarrassed and have said that they will avoid the pub in future. ab14 - 3 Jan 2009 12:17 |
