Grand old building which is in contrast to the typical uni blocks surrounding it. Good selection of beers with a couple from The Brunswick in Derby and a Blonde beer from the Coppice Side Brewery in Nottinghamshire (a new brewery to me). Imposing entrance and interior with a conservatory off the bar and gardens beyond. Busy at lunchtime when we were there and it's the first time I have ever seen customers queueing in line to be served !! (presumably because the bar counter isn't very big). Beer prices were very reasonable - averaging 2.50 a pint. Naturally it's popular with university staff and students though we did not feel out of place (and I never went to Uni). The tram stops just round the corner so it's easy enough to get to. Well worth a visit. mcroyal - 16 Feb 2011 23:56 |
Warm pub just on the edge of the university campus and by far the best place for a relaxing drink if you're an ale discerning uni student. Tends to be frequented by post-grads and lecturers but feels friendly to all crowds. Frequently evolving ale selection, supplemented by Thornbridge regulars all at a reasonable place gain the Uni Arms bonus points. Also one of the few pubs around with a garden that is actually pleasant to sit in when the weather warms up. hatter90 - 1 Apr 2010 17:40 |
Comfortable, traditional pub virtually on the University campus - hence the name, I suppose ? Note that it's only been a pub since January 2007 - previously it was the University Staff Club building. It feels a bit like entering a hotel as you go in through the lobby into the bar straight ahead of you. The pub bears the logo of Thornbridge Brewery outside, but serves real ales from other micros as well. My pint of Thornbridge White ( Wild ?) Swan at 2.20p was an excellent beer with a noticeable spicy and citrussy taste to it. In contrast to other reviews, I felt the customer mix was equally split between students and older drinkers during my recent Friday afternoon visit. This is another pub I think you should try and do when in Sheffield JohnBonser - 12 Mar 2009 13:54 |
An unexpected pleasure, finding an excellent pub in the middle of university land which is quite unlike most student bars (although I suspect that this place is perhaps more frequented by lecturers and other staff). Good range of real ales, including a selection from Thornbridge Brewery. The Lord Marples was on good form, and the atmosphere was lively and warm. rpadam - 28 Feb 2009 14:51 |
Late comment from October when visiting to do the Pub-Tic-Tram-Sport beer festival, and this was pub number two of those participating. Enjoyed 7 beers from the bar, cellar and the stillage in the lovely small room overlooking their oasis of a garden. Great choice of ales and all tip top condition. gillhalfpint - 17 Jan 2009 11:56 |
