First review of 2013!
Never visited this pub in its previous guise, but went here before an event down the road.
Its a small but cosy space, not mentally packed on my visit.
A nice range of American Beers on tap. Nice snacks available, had some gorgeous warmed pita bread. Friendly staff.
Just be prepared to be paying the odds, as due to importing the beer, you are paying over a £5 a pint. London prices plus extra, although a very enjoyable visit!

The Tulse Hill Tavern, Tulse Hill
Its another cavernous pub with an old style feel to it.
Last time I was in here years ago it felt like a definate locals haunt, was quiet on a wintery early Dec Sat afternoon visit.
Nothing unlikeable, would pop in and return.

The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross
So, a pub of two halves. You can debate if its one or two pubs.
I believe it is one pub, split into two parts, you just have to walk across a pathway to gain access to the other side.
Only been here once for a couple of drinks, but from what I can gather, the part of the right (if approached from the passage) is theh main section, and the left one is the extra that is only open at busy times or for perhaps occasions like parties, has an upstairs, and is called 'the crows nest'
Even both these parts joiend you wouldnt get the biggest pub in London, but on a good day people can access the outside. Of course, good afternoons/evenings in London are another big rarity! (talking weather wise of course)
However it does for some reason feel like a special vibe of a pub with something a little different, so for that reason, it has kudos from me and well worth a return in the future

The Sherlock Holmes, Charing Cross
Just above average id give this place. It was harmless enough on my visit, I wouldn't say I had a bad visit.
It is not only called the Sherlock Holmes, but is a monument to the character created by Sir Arthur Conan Coyle. It has a downstairs bar area and an upstairs restaurant. I went for a meal, so never experienced downstairs. It wasn't too packed, and to service wasn't too bad throughout - the American guy hosting tried to engage the clientelle, so wheather this is something appealing or you'd rather be lest alone to dine is to personnel taste. He managed to loose his stick that you sign onto the till with, and was scrabling around looking for it before service continued, however its called being human. Admittedly, he remembered we'd ordered drinks prior to this and still delivered.
There is also a room upstairs decorated to a Sherlock Holmes scene with memorabelia. Its worth a look through the upstairs window. There's also a small warmed up enclosed balcony bit next to this.
All this being said though, the pub looks and feels standard London fare. Pint range on tap is limited upstairs, and food and drink is still typically pricey.
Id still return, however, it wouldn't be the best pub ever to return too.

Driven past this pub hundreds of times and finally popped in the other day. Was over the Jubilee weekend and the crowd inside was in nice spirits. One barlady handling orders in a polite and smiley manner.
Only stayed for one - definately seemed a locals joint but seemed friendly enough. Is one of those that is hard to get to unless you are driving which isnt always ideal or up for a small walk

The William Morris, Merton Abbey Mills
First time ive been to this pub and got told the location was really nice with a market area on a Sat and a good vibe - although it isn't as good as it was 10 years ago
The pub experience was very enjoyable. Was a bank holiday and wasn't too packed, and tried out the varied ales on tap. Didnt order food but saw others that did and it came out fairly promptly.
The outside sitting area was a bit small and can imagine in the summer getting a seat is hard work. The view is ok but limited.
Other than usual London prices was a overall decent experience
10 Jun 2012 12:06
Passed in here on a stag do and it is an impressive pub, both in size and in location.
Was very packed inside, but the wait at the bar wasn't too painful. We drank outside, and although it was getting a bit blustery it was a pleasant enviroment with a fantastic view outside.
Didn't stay for too long to get a full grasp on drink prices but would image its standard pub prices for food and drink - ie would need a few notes in the pocket for a good night out here
Would happily return though

Is a Wetherspoons and does what that says on the tin, although this place seems smart, was reasonably packed on a Friday night visit but didnt take too long to get served, is rather large inside with an upstairs.
Unless its a dive that has no signs of ever having a lick of paint with old men that long like they actually live in there, I generally dont mind a Wetherspoons, and prices are normally quiet welcoming as well
28 May 2012 15:56
Some of the latest reviews below seem very negative
From my visit on a Sunny Friday evening, it seemed decent enough. The bar area was completely free when I went up, however 3/4 of the pub were sitting out the front enjoying the sunshine
The interior feels quite smart and plush for the area, and there is a hatch which shows it serves food.
Meet people in here, so worked well enough for that reason. Prices typically expensive. While was a decent visit, this seems the sort of place would have one and move on unless was with a decent sized group

The Hole In The Wall, Waterloo
Its got a tradional feel to it. Went in late afternoon just before a football match started, then started to get packed. I am personally not a footie fan, but still had decent drink and food service for the couple I stayed for.
Yes the side food section is more like a truckers cafe but it adds to the charm plus it is decent and not over-priced food
Well worth a visit
23 Apr 2012 09:42
Is an okay pub however wasnt that bowed over
Was packed on our visit, so went upstairs which was more of a restaurant area. Was fairly empty, and we were ready for an evening meal anyway. The food wasn't bad, took a tad long to come.
My biggest gripe was with teh service - a solo barman working. He was serving another table which is fair enough, however he came back behind the bar a couple of times and went about business pretty much ignoring our pressence as we held money in hand. All it takes is a 'be with you in a minute' acknowledging the customer, sounds petty but it goes along way.
Not bad on a crawl but a bit too souless for an extended stay
13 Apr 2012 14:49
This is another great pub that looks like its steepeled in history. The decor looks like you are drinking in a monastery. There are wooden pictures of monks on the higher parts of the wall.
A great pub, there is a lengthly bar with a good range of ales and beers on. Serves food but didnt have any, and couldnt say how packed it could get at peek hours.
Well worth checking out
13 Apr 2012 14:40
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
Obviously this pub has had extensive reviews, but wanted to elave my mark here as well
I believe this is the 3rd visit Ive had to this pub, and yes it is a unique visiting experience, has a top bar that claims it isn't for 'women' but obviously they do drink here.
It then goes downstairs on two other levels, and feels like your drinking in a dungeon area. Serves food, has a range of Sam Smiths unique beer, and although is obviously a bit of a tourist trap, is well worth the visit at not so crowded times (ie Friday evenings straight after work)
13 Apr 2012 14:37
Quaint little hostelry. Smallish on the inside, but popped in on a weekday morning making it pretty much empty at the time but suited the mood on a day off.
The barmaid was friendly enough, but we all had to deal with a drunken geezer who came in asking for a lost bag, who said he'd been in drinking the night before with a priest, who then turned into an official claiming he was going to shut the pub down, and then finally began picking up tables and chairs and twirling them around outside, all while happily downing his bottle of Leffe beer. Once I saw the beer I knew he wasnt a man of the cloth or an official, the scandrel! A happy morning in Brighton town!
13 Apr 2012 14:29
Impressed with this hostelry upon my visit
Polite service, with an upstairs section which looks like it could do live music in a jazz atmosphere.
Only stayed for one pint, but if upstairs, poke your head out the window to the right and enjoy the great sea view
13 Apr 2012 14:13
Not overly impressed with this new pubs outlook. Looks like another baron evening star clone. Not my pint of beer
13 Apr 2012 14:06
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Went on a warm Tuesday afternoon.
This place does have a good atmosphere about it, with a decent ale selection. There was many people sitting down to enjoy a lunchtime meal, and while I didnt indulge, it spelt good
First time id visited this place on my multiple visits to the city by the sea, and id happily return. Ideal for a 3 or so hour stop for food and beer, but on this occasion I enjoye a fine pint of Seafarers while perched outside nr a window
13 Apr 2012 13:59
Popped into this pub on a weekend visit to Bexhill, as read that it is one of the more favourable ones in the area. It was a mildly sunny day, but was very quiet (there was one other couple having a Saturday afternoon lunch).
It seemed a decent pub, nice interior and outside, but unfortunately nothing id say was fantastic.
Looks like theres a restaurant section for dinners, a couple of ales on tap. Worthwhile for sure, would pop in for but not necessarily go out the way for
13 Mar 2012 12:07
A new update with a new management in place - the old management used to be a couple which while never had any problems with always looked to me like they had no enthusiasm to be running the pub, and looked like they'd prefer to be elsewhere
Looks like the walls have had a lick of paint. And an ale pump has appeared. Only had an afternoon visit but I like the potential of this pub - on a busy cross junction wheather your inside or in the garden its a good feeling to have a pint and watch the world go by. With them reportedly making an effort inthe evenings it is a place that deserves to win.
16 Jan 2012 11:37
Generally had been avoiding this pub on regular visits to the Triangle - not that it was ever a terrible pub but it had always been a bit dark and gloomy on the inside and turned into a bit of a loud disco atmosphere at the weekend - getting older and want a more quiter atmosphere to sit and drink
However in the last few months this pub has been drawing me in again. It has alot going for it - very spacious, a large bar with a decent array on tap including real ales (there was 3 different varieties of Adnams at one point all in a row), capable and friendly service, and a well rounded atmosphere - book selection, different corners.
Now with an xmas tree almost touching the ceiling to boot, its not hard to see why this pubs a winner and throws another pub into a winning line-up at the Crystal Palace Triangle
2 Dec 2011 14:15
Closed down now and boarded up - aroudn 2-3 months ago.
While the only outstanding reason for a pop-in visit was generally comical value before it closed, it has to be said this pub definately went downhill over the last few years and with so many better places to choose from at the Triangle its no real sad loss, just nostalgia from its better days from 3-6 years ago
2 Dec 2011 11:35
It seems to have garnered decent reviews from below
I won't knock it - it seems like a quaint little place - but it is a small bar. Works on a pop in visit, don't know about an extended stay, although I would return there are more favorable places in the Triangle to adorn
2 Dec 2011 11:26
So after a period of 'which way will it go' - restaurant idea that went bust then back to a pub again - this has had a re-furb, and tried it out around a month ago.
It looks nice inside, the bar area seems more impressive with a greater range of drinks. Staff too are very friendly. But from my POV and others below just seems like that little bit is missing. With my visit, food was fine and they even said they'd bring our drinks to our table - but then we got handed the dessert menu, and we'd built up to have one, but then after having one staff member come around and pander to all of the 3 other tables around us for around 20 minutes - and she came around 5-6 times, we felt ignored and asked for the bill. I think this included the table next to us pretty much receiving their roast dinner and finishing it off during the wait.
However, don't want to be too negative - will definately give it another go - it deserves to do well...
9 Nov 2011 08:49
Very cosy little pub that I throughly enjoyed a brief visit.
Biggin Hill always seems like an historical spot to stop off at and its not got a lot of pubs in the area but thsi one does seem to be making an effort.
Works well on a crisp early Autumn evening
2 Nov 2011 12:30
The pub itself isn't bad at all - it could probably use a makeover though traditionalists will cry out no
Ive been in here several times and the service has always been friendly and curteous. It has some benches front and back, and live entertainment and quiz nights scattered throughout.
My biggest gripe is that theres a very clique vibe to the patrons here in which some live and die down here, and it can give an 'our pub' mentality to proceedings
2 Nov 2011 12:24
Its all about location isn't it - if this place was in Croydon, it would be slammed down as trashy - end of the day, it isn't all that much different attitude really, and by previous reviews, its already had a slight slating. But its a 'posh bar' over the West End.
My visit was very enjoyable as it goes, it was a mates birthday, but he hadn't booked any area up, but we got there before 8pm so was free entry, managed to get a couple of rounds in from happy hour which was half price cocktails, got some outside sofa type seatings which suited our numbers (and for this time of year it wasn't too cold - I think the heaters from next door were helping the atmosphere somewhat), and if that wasn't enough our group got let into the VIP area downstairs (just another small room with another bar so quicker service is all really), and wondered in and out of there without any hassle.
Enjoyed myself and got merry, and before I knew it was 12ish and had to rush off to get the last tube home. So all in all I should give this place kudos, but it is what it is after all - a bar with fast drinks and loud music. My next visit could easily fall into a previous review category
24 Oct 2011 11:53
The Conquering Hero, Upper Norwood
On a passing visit, I thought this pub was quite a decent place to escape for a couple of hours
A mixture of tradional with a more modern feel, was quiet when popped in here after work but def get the vibe of a locales pub.
Halloween theme just starting up and and events list so making an effort.
24 Oct 2011 11:36
Definatelty sad news, have popped in 3-4 times now and the escapist location gives this place a rare buzz
However the isolation factor has probably worked against it as well, but would still cross fingers that this is opened again under new ownership and kept in it current guise
3 Oct 2011 10:53
Only popped in briefly on a very Sunny afternoon in Oct(!) but from what I saw this looks a very cosy and friendly pub.
Can sit out the front and watch the traffic go by, sit to the side in a good bar garden, comfortable looking interior, friendly bar lady serving and a decent range on tap
Would def like to return
3 Oct 2011 10:51
Middle of the road for me. The pub was rather packed to the point where you couldn't maneuver (im sure its popular with its regulars but on this occasion think it was more people standing in awkward spots). Toliets dark with broken seat (nature called in that way), and person working thought it was more important to down a shot with his at the bar mate than serve the next customer (id hate to be a killjoy but my job always demands a customer comes first so sod it ill make a point of it here)
Stood outside on a summers day which is quaint though im suer makes a lot of noise from whoevers living down that road (if its students they are probably living in the pub making all the racket anyway)
6 Sep 2011 11:50
Its had a re-furb. Can only mean improvement. This place really was at the bottom of the barrell on my last visit, with only die hard regulars propping up the bar and 'you don't belong here' looks from anyone who is probably called either Barry or Clive at the bar
The new look bar is modern, and clean. It still stands out as a small place to frequent, more of a passers pub now than a regulars, but whatever its future stands for, its better than it was! Service was polite and curteous on my visit
6 Sep 2011 11:39
Decent little boozer which feels like a hidden gem between the backstreets
Unspoilt interior and location give it a tradional feel
Packed just enough for an early Sat afternoon atmosphere without feeling unwelcoming or disturbing
Only stayed for a swift one but would return at any time
4 Jul 2011 13:18
The 2nd visit ive had to this tradional pub which looks like its stoof the test of time without being spoilt too much
Had a bit of afternoon company on Sat lunchtime without being too disturbing. Feels like a hidden gem. Couple of ales on. Only stayed for a quick tipple but works well for a couple of hours away from the madness
4 Jul 2011 13:04
The Garrick Arms, Trafalgar Square
While it seemed a decent pub it can get pretty packed and is suitably poncy for this area.
There is a small selection of ales and for a pop by visit isn't bad but for an extended stay need to weigh up your options for time and space
30 Jun 2011 14:22
The Bear and Staff, Leicester Square
Popped in here a couple of times now.
Its a decent enough pub compared to others in the area. Most look quite decent from the outside but lack any charm on the inside other than over-priced beer and food and lack of space.
Seemed friendly enough
30 Jun 2011 14:14
The Fox and Hounds, Carshalton
Reasonable pub on a summery evening visit.
Got a bit of a rough and tumble atmosphere compared to other pubs in the area but did enjoy the visit here.
Has a digital jukebox added which is never a bit thing.
Good place to visit for a crawl after a couple of drinks but wouldnt become a regular
27 Apr 2011 12:11
A nice pub to go out of your way for.
On my visit, the friendly bar staff were present.
The garden at the back is quite unique, inc as previously stated, a sandpit and animals in cages. I don't have kids personally but it didn't bother me too much a few being around
Didn't order any food but the food being served aroudn looked very decent
Beer nice - not the hugest selection ive ever seen but decent enough
Come here for atmosphere.
27 Apr 2011 12:04
The Grape and Grain, Crystal Palace
Along with all the below glowing reviews, I too can attest to this pubs popularity on here
Emerging as one of the better pubs in the triangle, it has a solid range on tap, comfy feel to the interior, and friendly service, with the only negative points being it can get too packed at times to find seating, and the toilets seem to be located in a different area code the time you get to them.
However very much worth going out of your way for
10 Mar 2011 16:00
Decent sized pub which has a somewhat grand feel to it
Car parking at rear
I went in on a midweek quiz night and the atmosphere was busy in there, but relaxed. Service was fast friendly and re-liable
Can't complain
10 Mar 2011 15:27
Decent Wandsworth boozer that had a busling atmosphere on a late Sat afternoon, where barstaff are friendly and can have a laugh also
Would return
24 Jan 2011 12:43
The Rose and Crown, Wandsworth
Quite cavernous pub which has an olde school feel about it. Nice to stop in for a pint but don't expect happy hour to feel... very happy
24 Jan 2011 12:42
Only popped in on a flying visit on a quieter Sat afternoon when the weather was a bit biting but you can see it is a decent little hostelry
Bar staff go out their job happily and stands out as a unique oasis in the Youngs mounted pubs in the area
If you cant smile at the friendly reception of the pub dog that wants you to play 'ball' then nothing will cheer up your mood
24 Jan 2011 11:30
Decent range on tap, decent and friendly service, and parking priveledges
Enjoyable visit, packed atmosphere when I went in
Would return. Old ramshackle charm to it
16 Nov 2010 10:03
The Claret Free House, Addiscombe
This place is obviously still turning good trade if all these regular reviews are to go by
Its more of a wine bar look to it, but def has a pub feel on the inside.
While was a decent enough visit, theres always something of an over-rated feel to these sorts of places, akin to the beer circus of croydon and the evening star of brighton - yes wide range to drink available, but customer service always leaves something to be desired
Out of the three I have had the best experience in the beer circus so far
Would return but it aint a 'roll out the red carpet' type of place
16 Nov 2010 09:59
Locales feel pub... big enough, has a bit of atmosphere
But badly kept booze, which when I asked for a swap, I received another pint of... badly kept booze
Wouldn't be too much in a rush to return for this reason
16 Nov 2010 09:53
Fantastic pub forthe area, and one of the more packed pubs to back up that fact...
As previously said, the interior is lush and quite cavernous. The service is friendly and pretty prompt, and the range of ales is very good
Theres food upstairs if that takes your fancy, though maybe a wait involved
A favourite stop off when going to see acts at the Hammersmith Apollo
22 Oct 2010 09:43
Had a fun evening in here on a Friday when the Kareoke was occuring, but thats mainly because it wasn't ultra packed and the group that we was in had time to enjoy it and let loose. The lady who does the kareoke made it quite fun
Dunno if the pub is special on any other levels, I probably wouldn't go out of my way for it normally, but if passing...
18 Oct 2010 13:00
Its a niche little place, directly opposite the 'London Tombs' Entrance, and this is what drew us in... on a mates birthday venture to there, we were slightly early, so popped in for a cheeky pint first, and we had money off vouchers
It was empty, seemed small inside, but for a quick stop off worked fine in the circumstances. Had an ale out of a tankard, but looks more for wine lovers
The one sole woman behind the bar seemed pleasat enough.
Wouldn't have a problem returning but wouldn't go out of the way for either
21 Sep 2010 13:16
I have to agree with the reviewer below. This pub seems to be getting less and less enjoyable on each subsequent visit
Also would help if the guy who runs it actually looked a bit more like he enjoyed doing so... doesnt exactly feel welcoming
On a good visit in here it feels like a small house party is occuring but doesnt have that good feel alot these days
3 Aug 2010 10:24
The King Henry VIII Inn, Hever
Visited on a lovely summers day when the pub was averagely filled and the tourists were out in full flock.
The beer garden was lovely and extensive, the '1698' bottled ale was a treat, and the service was friendly and curt enough, but my is it pricey. Ok we are talking somewhat of a tourist trap, but still even for a place you feel a slight cost increase it does still sting a tad..
2 Jul 2010 08:24
Diamond little hostelry, with a rather large beer garden out the back. There was a tent and festival taking place on teh Saturday, only stopped for one but was very decent.
Staff seems helpful and willing, and was suitably packed.
Would definately return.
25 May 2010 12:51
Had a Saturday afternoon visit, just had a pint out on a bench on the outside stretch nr the car park
Considering the lovely day, am surprised managed to get a seat, as it didnt have alot of seating on the outside. Maybe was too hot for some.
Enjoyed the pint and moved on, no problems, but considering reports on food here glad that was it really
25 May 2010 12:49
Pleasant enough on the very sunny afternoon visit of the weekend. Was unsurprisingly packed in the pub garden outback.
Seems quaint but a small-ish pub on the scale of things, plus does look like a regulars haunt.
Does have a restaurant section
Beer selection mediocre
25 May 2010 12:40
Have only made a passing visit to this pub, would would largely agree with reviews posted below.
The weather was lovely, so frequented the garden out back, and quite lenthly it is, really has a feel of your own back garden to it, though being nestled in between houses down a residential street can easily have this feel. Does make me ponder what it would be like to live right next door to a pub like this - pro's and con's.
Didn't have any food but the layout at 'the back' does look welcoming, with many reserved signs on tables highlighting its popularity.
Its a pub to a restaurant with a fireplace to a pub beer garden layout.
Ok range on tap, as said typical Youngs fare. Would def return
26 Apr 2010 12:53
Have been in here twice over time now, one on a fairly packed weekend and once on a quieter weekday visit
Its a fairly large place with a rectangular feel, with a large bar around the centre.
Its got a decent range on tap.
No problems here generally, though not had any outstanding visit as such.
23 Apr 2010 11:15
The Hand and Raquet, Wimbledon
Decent pub, quite homely, lengthly bar, prompt service.
Only had a pop in visit, and some other pubs in the area are more worthwhile seeking out, but isn't doing a bad job
22 Mar 2010 13:28
The Hand In Hand, Wimbledon Common
Another winner in the area, and just off the beat and track
Wimbledon is heaving with Youngs pubs
This one isn't overly big and will get packed out, but has a fair bit to offer on tap, and does serve food, didn't have any, prob none-too-cheap, but for atmosphere and friendly service definately would return
22 Mar 2010 13:24
The Dog and Fox, Wimbledon Village
Its an ok pub, which is as previously said massive inside, half of which is divided into a restaurant. I had a meal with a mate, and is pricey. Food isn't bad, but isn't extraorinary either.
Maybe in a party mood with a large crowd and prepared to pay out for it, this place would work well, but for pop in visits it doesnt do much, as well as having very gloomy feel to the restaurant area
22 Mar 2010 13:13
The Rose and Crown, Wimbledon Village
While it has a slight feel to it of nothing outstanding compared to the other pubs in the area, this ones quite a friendly winner. A good selection of drinks/ales available, with a good crowd in. some of which had babies in tow, not to everyones tastes but in this area is really unsurprising
As a few have pointed out, alot less pricey and poncy as the Dog & Fox over the road, and a much more homely (and less cave type) feel to it.
Good recommendation
22 Mar 2010 13:10
Decent pub but chain style offering
Good atmosphere, though will attract the Friday/Sat night drinking crowds
Nice interior though
18 Mar 2010 12:38
Great country visit old style hostelry, which was quite packed on a Summers day visit
Sat in the extensive beer garden, which has many nooks surrounded by shrubbery
Inside, it is a decent size, but the bar area is quite small and may demand a small wait. Beer selection decent as well
Well worth visiting
18 Mar 2010 12:06
A nice little treat of a pub, which is only really accesible by car or by a little stroll I gather from reports below.
It was fairly quiet, but it works very well in being so. There is a nice bench outside, and sitting in that in the summer rays makes you have one of those moments when you can smile and really mean it.
Bar staff chirpy, would return
18 Mar 2010 12:02
Another great stop off point for myself during V09.
This one is a large pub, with a fantastic area out back that had an extra bar, music stand, only criticsim is not tons of seating space but adequate.
The inside is a tradional feel, and was packed.
Works well and would return
17 Mar 2010 11:01
Lovely little village pub, although located on a busy street area.
Went in here during the V Festival period in 2009, and on a hot Summers Day, on the way to the festival, was a lovely stop off point.
Quite small, and dunno if would work at all times, but friendly staff and nice selection of ales on tap, its a nice stop off point.
17 Mar 2010 10:41
Has gone downhill over the last 5 years or so
Used to have a decent pop in meal and drink feel to it, but the food has slowly gotten worse and worse. I can believe the long wait comments below as well, as I have had to wait for over an hour myself.
Have been to a reasonably fun quiz night here in the past, and does have a decent Summer beer Garden, but other than that the appeal has totally worn off
17 Mar 2010 10:03
I have had a semi-decent curry night in here from time to time, but generally these days, if im gonna go for a curry, a proper Indian is normally preferable 9/10 times, unless your looking for a cheap option.
Other than that have to agree with the reviews below, although I wouldn't go as far as to say this is the worst Wetherspoons pub around, it isn't anything extraordinary, has a grotty feel to it, and does have a lonely drinker feel to it
17 Mar 2010 09:56
Not all that bad a hostelry. Seems a very locals place, not the sort of place you can easily pop in or by very easily anyway. But im a local myself.
Has a digital jukebox on offer, very rare these days. Fun and friendly atmosphere on a Saturday night, a decent alternative to the Goat down the road
16 Mar 2010 10:32
Its a nice layout on the inside, big bar and a decent if nothing too expensive range.
It is a bat that thrives on the clubbing nature though. Decent for occasional pop ins but regularly nothing stands out about it
12 Mar 2010 10:32
Nothing spectacular. Has a bar, serves beer, no great range.
Empty pop in visits probably work best, if on a crawl because if has to choose just one this wouldn't be too far at the top of the list
12 Mar 2010 10:30
After years in Croydon, i only ventured in this pub recently, as always heard it was a bit of a grunge and goths haunt.
While to an extent this is true, this place has a charm to it. While the music gets extremely loud on a Saturday evening, and its of hard rock and metal lines (although im sure they have different types on different evenings) the staff and clienette are friendly, and the beer/ale range is decent and extensive.
Not for the stiff upper lipped, if that even exists in Croydon, it maybe a starting point for the Black Sheep, but its worth a pop in at the right time
12 Mar 2010 10:11
I quite like this as a JDW, and as the reviewer below me has said, its the only Llyods bar in Croydon, although there isn't much difference between them and normal Spoons these days.
I used to come here regularly in my night-life days, used to do the Thursday nights til 2pm when it was really packed. I can honestly say if I still enjoyed doing that, this would be the place id come, although I think its pretty dead now on those 'clubbing evenings' where everyone else goes to Yates or Reflex, or the way over-rated Tiger Tiger, but just goes to show you im not with the crowd anymore.
Its got a nice area downstairs with extra bar and dancefloor, and comfortable large area upstairs.
For me, it suits all occasions, Breakfast and afternoon beers, and evening gatherings.
12 Mar 2010 09:57
Been drinking in Croydon for 10 odd years now, having seen alot of the night-life, and went through the stage of the 'Orchid' was the best place to be with mates on a Saturday night, just bring those free champayne vouchers
Always heard this place was dodgy. Avoid unless you want a fight. And lets face it.. the name of the pub doesn't exactly raise confidence levels
However, just lately, I wondered in to see what all the fuss was about...
I was pleasantly surprised. Ok its nothing special, but its quite a comfortable place to pop in, loads of room so people do just mind their business, and a place to drink, play pool, use the jukebox, although there's no great selection on tap.
Much better than the Eagle at the end of the road, which you do feel you might need a gun for.
12 Mar 2010 09:40
A place to go to get away from the hustle of Croydons busy high street.
Its not a bad place to go out of your way for for a pint or two, but it is rather small, and hasn't got anything outstanding about it per say.
Id rather pop in here on a Saturday afternoon to get the benefits of it, and drink to the end of another long working week...
12 Mar 2010 09:35
If im to be totally honest, the pub inself, although in bad need of a lick of paint on the outside and a new carpet, looks decent... decent sized interior, nice conservatory section for eating and a large beer garden
But the rest of the elements is a ramshackle...
The bar had no ales available, and just run of the mill pints
The clintelle chavvy types with 20 year old dads bringing their babies in prams down. Still they take them in the garden for some fresh air... while they smoke a fag...
Its the sort of place you don't stare around in... or sooner or later your be asked 'what you looking at?'
No my sort of place... very different contrast to the Joiners over the road
11 Mar 2010 16:06
A countryside pub, with a car park that gets full up very quickly
Large beer garden, bigger than the pub itself, definately a summer place but has a winter charm to it if you fancy a couple of hours away from your hectic schedule. Go and sit at the bar...
The pub is like a little cabin, and def has a charm. Well worth a visit
I received a text on my phone and swore in alarm... not smart considering the house rules but I thought it was amusing at the time...
11 Mar 2010 14:44
As a chain, Ive got no problems with O'Neils, although never found them totally enchanting.
However been here a handfull of times, and the layout is pretty decent, feels like its got 'layers' to it, with a nice upper terrace if your visiting on a warmer day or evening.
I think this sort of place works better with a group of people having a good catch up other than maybe a solo drink or a couple of you, in which it has a somewhat gloomy feel to its visits.
11 Mar 2010 10:05
Rather football orientated pub near the station.
Bit of the small side
Ok for a quick pint but not really my pint of beer
11 Mar 2010 09:55
The Flying Machine, Biggin Hill
Rather hidden away and as such probably more of a locals place.
Been here twice and neither time was particularly packed, though not on a Fri or Sat night so far
However, it isn't all bad. Service was decent enough, has a pool table and jukebox, and what looks like a resident pub dog, while the locals have a banter. Car parking at rear, and a fair bit of space to it.
If you can take the feeling of being recognized as a non-regular without much fuss being made about it, its well worth a visit when in the area
11 Mar 2010 09:12
Ample old fashioned type pub which does the trick
Very different that alot of which Clapham has to offer
Serves food
Quite unassuming and nothing spectacular. Miserable barmaid
10 Mar 2010 13:41
On a drop in Saturday visit, the pub did seem quite packed with an afternoon lunch crowd. Service didn't take too long either
There is a nice range of ales/lagers on tap, and the interior is cosy.
Had a drink in the garden, was cold and hardly anyone out here, though a heater was there near the entrance. Looked very funky though, would imagine that would be packed and pumping in the Summer.
Not the most obvious choice along the North Clapham stretch, but a treat none-the-less, would definately return
10 Mar 2010 11:40
The Clapham North, Clapham North
A Saturday afternoon visit here was a decent experience, if nothing to write home about.
There has been alot of comments complaining about staff here, but they were very friendly on my visit, was waiting at the bar, they were serving someone else, they told me they'd be straight with me (customer acknowledgement), then said they'd take me order from the table when said wanted food. Pretty Aussie staff as well.
Decent range of largers on tap.
Wasn't all that busy on my visit, the sun was out but it wasn't the hottest day. Interior is nice and snug.
The only thing im comment on is had a breakfast meal, it was rather expensive for what it was, but for this type of pub, its too be expected. Nice though.
10 Mar 2010 11:23
The Joiners Arms, South Norwood
Cosy is definately the definative word to descripe this place. Its a feel like entering Aladdins cave, in a very pleasant way
Very tradional feel
Ive now been here twice, and both have been pleasant. Service was decent. Havent seen any theme nights in action.
I can imagine it getting a little clicky at times with regulars
8 Sep 2009 12:05
Very relaxing and welcoming pub in the tradional sense.
Away from the high street variety, so away from the hustle and bustle crowd
Could have easily stayed for a fair few ales
Highly recommended
21 Aug 2009 15:02
Popped in on a 'passing visit' last Sat, and it was an enjoyable little visit in my opinion
Old style pub feel with a little bit of a modern charm. They had Doombar on tap when I was in there, plus a new Adnams lager tap.
The barman who was leaving on Sunday dispersed amusing life advice and offered Tequila if things go wrong with the ladies...
Maybe this one off visit was a one off joy, but would return if passing
4 Aug 2009 13:59
The Railway Tavern, Carshalton
Cosy if small pub, but it sounds like its got its kudos and honors
Was a brief visit on a rainy early evening, but was quaint, fairly packed with supposed regulars im guessing
A return would be welcome. The pub quiz MUST be defeated, so says the regime!
12 Feb 2009 09:57
Although alot think that this pub has seen changes towards the worse lately, the two recent visits Ive had here have been a pleasure
This place would definately work best on a hot day though, as the wide garden and seating area helps fill up this place. Cosy inside but a little small
But the Tanglefoot and Beaver are lovely, and the service has been wonderful. A quality pub
2 Sep 2008 14:40
Lovely old style pub with a modern touch in a beautiful area
Couple of decent ales on tap, well worth trying
Nice garden area, and friendly staff
15 Aug 2008 13:05
Welcoming pub full of exotic Belgium largers. Nice, but yes you have to be willing to spend a pretty penny
Stopped for a meal, was nice, the squid wasn't quite what I was expecting (think I was thinking more calamari, but had a small creature with tentacles mixed into a salad), but the chicken more than made up for it with a big portion, though they did also forget a small side dish i added in at the end
Friendly staff. A re-visit welcome at the right time
28 Jul 2008 10:07
Very packed on my visit yesterday. But was appropriate weather for it
Lovely outside section for this sort of weather, although does get a bit cramped
Friendly enough crowd
The only bad thing id have to say is directed towards the staff. Ok plus point there was around 6-7 people behind the bar, much better than your average 3 people on a busy moment. But still waited literally 20mins to get served, and the thing that got a lump in my throat is that a guy that had only just reached the bar got served before me and a couple of others simply for knowing the barman serving, and I think he knew it. Simply not on, especially when your patience is starting to wear thin anyway and you really feel like mentioning this in haste then hoping you will get served after your grumble
28 Jul 2008 09:53
The Surrey Cricketers, Croydon
A decent boozer, seemed spacious and quaint on the inside
Fair amount of tap. There is the feeling this can be a regulars haunt once it gets going, but popped in on a more quieter moment
21 Jul 2008 10:41
Decent range of Fuellers on tap, not a bad place
The inside could do with smartening up.
There is a small garden section across the way, and they were doing a barbeque. Nice touch there
21 Jul 2008 10:38
Niksons Bar and Restaurant, Battersea
Didn't have a problem with this establishment, it does have a 'we are based in Clapham, we are frequented by suits and the money buys good living' vibe no question about it. You will be paying alot for a good night out here
Occasional visit with perhaps a good woman in tow, this is a decent stop. Other than that nothing spectacular.
26 Jun 2008 09:38
Not a bad new venue, will probably never have the range that the beer circus had to offer, but some interesting selections none the same.
Its cosier. We have a bit of music atmosphere once again, and it is becoming a trend of South Croydon with these snug bars that are a nice change from the Chav-centric range of Croydon
Beer Circus will be missed of its uniqueness, but then again, I also think like its Brightonian counter-part 'the evening star' it was a little over-rated too
13 May 2008 10:13
Impressive garden that was a joy to seat even after the sun went down
Nice range of tab, great machines to play on, a joyous pop-in visit
12 May 2008 10:05
Enjoyable visit, cosy place with a great beer garden that was packed during my sunny Sat visit. There was a BBQ in motion, but was exclusive of a private party, which was a shame as it smelt good. Still at least the garden didnt get shut off for it...
Stuff are fairly prompt. Small range of ales but the one I had was really nice
12 May 2008 09:47
A cosy welcoming regulars place, fairly big, ales on tap.
Sounds like it has a couple of charms to it from previous posts
More a ramshackle look to it, may not become a best of on my list but future visits would not be out of the question. If your in this neck of the woods, worth a pop in.
28 Mar 2008 12:38
Inside, you are dealing with a trendy looking, up to date look, although even with an upstairs, it is small.
Popped in on an early evening visit, and the staff were friendly, came to the table and offered to bring a round over. Your looking at a bar/club atmosphere, so beer and cocktails, ok range but rather expensive.
Then tried to pop in on an evening visit, to get the bad bouncer experience. Looked up and down, then told 'members only tonight'. Wow, you can tell im not a member before checking memberships boys? Doesn't bother me these days, im not dressing up poncy for a flying visit, those days have gone, I get to move on somewhere comfortable while said mind readers get to enjoy the cold. Still, they will be predicting thoughts on how to do a decent job hopefully next
28 Mar 2008 12:14
The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
This place has a great look and vibe about it
My first visit, quite packed, didnt wait too long too get served, so further decisions about the place will be reserved, but ill happily return
The music is also a treat
20 Mar 2008 10:06
I do like this bar.
I haven't seen it in its hayday, so maybe nothing to compare it too. It does seem to have a bit of a 'Sports Bar' Feel to it, almost comparable to Walkabout in some respects, but the atmosphere is more down to earth, if still loud
However, has a decent range of Canadian Beers on offer, and thats worth the voyage of discovery alone
Something original to try in this grand neck of the woods
20 Mar 2008 09:51
I enjoyed my brief visit here, although is more of a restaurant feel than a pub feel. An interior mix of old fashioned elements going into a modern feel
Nice for a stop off
5 Mar 2008 09:09
Seemed cosy and comfortable on my fleeting visit
Didn't pay much attention to the restaurant section, though the pub did the trick, nice Youngs, and the tv although off looked nice
1 Feb 2008 10:29
Cosy pub with a regulars attitude
Jokebox works a treat, and certainly has the patrons queueing (does also help if you like Now combilations as well)
28 Jan 2008 12:43
Prince Of Wales, Covent Garden
Bit crowded in a bad way, hard to get to the bar. A staff member saw me and a friend line up in a bad place, recommend we move over, then asked us what we want. This surprisingly quaint staff attitude was then quelled by two female patrons who thought we were served above them. Well, the staff offered, and im sure if it was the other way around you wouldn't be complaining but smiling as well...
28 Jan 2008 12:42
The Opera Tavern, Covent Garden
Nice place, if you get in at a decent time
Fast service, and a good 'it machine' to have a stab at
28 Jan 2008 12:40
The Coach and Horses, Covent Garden
Bit on the small side, but has a quaint feel. If your with your other half or one other person, suits well
28 Jan 2008 12:39
Gets very packed with crowds of all ages
Can be awkward to get a seat. Fair range on tap. Would re-visit but depends if you want a quiet drink or in more of a flamboyant atmosphere mood as to when your come back
28 Jan 2008 12:37
Great place to visit, nice tradional feel to it
Doesn't have alot of seating options, there is an upstairs area which suits the food options more than anything I would think
But as a pop in visit, or short stay, suits well
28 Jan 2008 12:36
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
Great pub, tucked away, so becomes a hidden treat
Can get quite packed out, but service remains at a fast pace with a smile
Recommend visiting
28 Jan 2008 12:34
Although nothing to write home about, didn't have any problems with this place on my visit, however only stayed for one (as intended)
No real ales, a bit of a small locales pub, however, board games, pool table, and the best of all, a digital jukebox offer a few quaint touches
Service was decent enough too
11 Jan 2008 12:38
The County Arms, Wandsworth Common
Pub seems lovely as a well decorated, presented establishment. The service was ok when I was there, and the ales on tap weren't bad.
However, location wise, is a bit of a hard one to get too, and would prob only be frequented by regulars.
Ideal if passing, not worth going out of your way for
2 Jan 2008 11:43
The Claret Free House, Addiscombe
Enjoyable visit, and a great Xmas Ale on tap... was only going to try it for one, but me and my mate decided it was worth having 3 times
Quite packed by regulars I would guess
My only slight criticism is the barman acknowledging the customer ritual that left me and my mate waiting a bit while he was yapping to one of his regulars... could have asked what we wanted then continued the conversation as he poured... just you can see your hands rolling up into fists and the feeling of walking out coming on, as countless other ignored patrons have done before...
27 Dec 2007 11:08
Nice traditional look of a Hostelry. Very nice 6X on tap, shame it ran out on an early afternoon visit, saving grace was a decent Adnams
Nice screen to watch a match on, Im not sure what the atmosphere is like when packed though
11 Dec 2007 20:53
Good Hostelry, containing a decent modern look, with interesting interior seating
Proper Pint mugs, and fairly prompt service
How can one walk past the Train Station, unless heading to the Half Moon Instead?
11 Dec 2007 20:51
A great find, a pub that looks small on entry but has alot of room to it by the looks of it
Studenty feel, would return myself, if your in the mood for this kind of atmosphere
14 Nov 2007 09:47
The Portobello Star, Portobello Road
Enjoyable visit, small so hard to get a seat, but friendly service and some music off an ipod added a smile
14 Nov 2007 09:46
Nicely done up now, very welcome feel. Nice cold pints and a good looking food menu..
18 Oct 2007 08:48
Got a bit of character, seemed busy on my visit, yet was served fairly quickly
I would definately return, as a longer stay would be welcome
18 Oct 2007 08:45
Not bad for a wetherspoons pub, fairly large. But running by the numbers
18 Oct 2007 08:43
Wow, whoever anoymous is. I was aiming to get merry at least thanks for asking.. first of all, my comment was based on a pop in visit... Doombar is served down at the B&R, which was where my comment was directed at.. I had that in both, so I do drink ale, as well as lager. Your probably one of those that think that ales are the only way forward.. have a bit of broader spectrum pal.
15 Oct 2007 13:48
Seemed quaint on a pop in visit, had nice atmosphere.
The beer was good. Didnt try the food though
3 Oct 2007 10:59
Seemed okay on my visit. Brimming with a bit of life. Decent IPA on tap...
Try reserving your own bar seat area and enjoy your pint...
1 Oct 2007 11:34
One of those 'decorate the walls with the passage of time' pubs, which although quaint, can be give or take depending on your mood...
Was a nice visit on a Saturday afternoon. Bit small but worth a pop in.
1 Oct 2007 11:33
Similar tap range to the Bread and Roses down the road...
Smaller pub but cosy enough... Nice to sit outside on a not-too-bad day
1 Oct 2007 11:28
Very good pub, nice range on tap, fairly friendly service, and a packed pub as i sat there trying out several new ales
Off the beat and track, which maybe adds a certain hidden treat
1 Oct 2007 11:26
Nice looking bar, could be adventurous on a packed visit, as long as you can find a seat, but seemed a bit flat on a quiet afternoon.
The staff did look in a bit of a daze. Guess thats what working Sta afternoons does to you.
1 Oct 2007 10:58
Nice pub and nice bar staff humoured a first visit of the day for me and a happy colleague...
And yes beer was flat, ale has run out, so this was the let down. Would re-visit and reserve judgement for a second time...
1 Oct 2007 10:55
Nice location, seems a nice cosy interior, though was empty on my afternoon visit, and had a pleasant enough day to sit outside.
The food is quite expensive, I really enjoyed what I ordered, but they are giving the impression that you are paying for 'quality' so if y0ou dont mind splashing out a bit fair enough
Would re-visit, though dunno with any tight mates as I know who will get lumbered with most of the rounds...
1 Oct 2007 10:53
I came here about 8 years ago for a friends birthday, and was keen to find it again for memory value. Seems almost totally different from what I remember
Seems more of a restaurant feel than a pub venue. Seems cosy, nicely done up, with decent enough food on the menu, though haven't tried it yet
Ill 'reserve' judgement for my next planned visit, as will return
11 Sep 2007 10:03
The Crown and Anchor, Covent Garden
Seemed pleasant enough, though was outside most of the time
Okay range on tap, but seemed a bit small inside...
29 Aug 2007 08:37
It passed a visit, the bar lady who served me was pleasant enough, but can def see the gloomy atmosphere in this place. there was some loud youngsters at the bar on my visit and one of the bar staff guys was def taking his time chatting to them
Good do better but if you've got a bit of tolerance isn't bad bad
13 Aug 2007 15:58
Nice visit when I went. Garden lovely. Bar staff very friendly. Has a charm, maybe a bit small and rickety, but is tucked away nicely enough that it would def be a regulars haunt
10 Aug 2007 10:43
The Old Buttermarket, Canterbury
Decent hostelry, spacious, selection on tap. Been in here at varying times, its got a charm to it. Would imagine student nights aplenty in here.
10 Aug 2007 10:40
Not so hidden away but you'd think so seeing as how quiet it can be when the main stretch of Croydon is quite busy...
Nice to have a Saturday afternoon drink in the sunshine, on the benches outside, even if its a bit cramped to watch the world go by, can still admire the blue sky...
The inside shows some good event and commoraderie possibilities on a good night...
7 Aug 2007 15:39
Looking a bit less run-down agreed. Would be interested to see how an evening here shapes up..
Will look on with keen interest
7 Aug 2007 15:36
Brief visit, but I liked this pub. Nice feel and atmosphere, was served with a smile fairly quick...
Looks like they will reserve a table for you if you ask in advance...
31 Jul 2007 11:12
On my brief visit, seemed ok. Was a sunny day, front doors open, and everyone was sittin there to feel the sunshine on their legs...
31 Jul 2007 10:37
Big pub, busy feel, nice on a Sat sunny afternoon
Music to compliment visit. Group visit here would go down a treat
18 Jun 2007 16:23
Good place this
Gastro pubs in my view are welcome if they mostly retain a good pub feel, and this does well.
Packed with Studenty types, with a retro decor
Would love an extended afternoon here
18 Jun 2007 16:19
The Duke Of Wellington, Portobello Road
Nice establishment.
Spacious, packed on my visit, though was to avoid the Saturday Rain...
Fair range on tap, and bar goes around in a long square
And yes come on boys, the clock needs to run above the bar again!
18 Jun 2007 16:17
The Earl of Lonsdale, Notting Hill
To be honest, weird pub
Ok, some may like the Samuel Smiths, and I only tried one, but wheat beer is a bit horrid on my taste buds...
Also, whats with the low doorway type alcoves you have to get through? We all elves or something? Or is this a prove your not too pissed ploy?
Not my cup of tea, tho the eating room did seem nice
18 Jun 2007 16:14
The Portobello Gold, Portobello Road
Brakspear does grow on you, though it does have that vinegar 'going off' taste from the off
Ok establishment, not massively big but tradional feel that looks like you need to try it when it is easy to get to the bar
Staff friendly, Music nice. Different feel to other Gastro pubs in the area
18 Jun 2007 16:08
The Sun In Splendour, Notting Hill
Was pleasant on my visit. Very studenty feel. Looked like a garden or something out back.
Worth a look in...
18 Jun 2007 16:05
The Prince Albert, Notting Hill
Hopefully 2007 has seen some improvement in the running of this pub
I had no qualms about it, decor is lovely. Didnt try the food but the cooking section seemed nice enough. Cracking blue labelled ale, and a fair selection on tap. Got fairly packed while I was sitting in there
Would return, would be on the guard for possible thieves...
18 Jun 2007 15:59
Like its shambolic charm or not, this pub certainly has character...
It appears to have changed hands, has had a few paint jobs, the carpet has been taken up. The ceiling also apparently fell down due to some badly fitted air conditioning unit right outside the blokes!
Its regulars know though that it is trying, and is still very much worth a pop in if your passing...
14 Jun 2007 10:37
The Botley Hill Farmhouse, Warlingham
Seemed a nice place with a nice bar...
Food was reasonable, bit pricey though. Also had a quiet atmosphere inside with seemingly the feel that everyone is watching and hearing you...
Ok visit, would return, not a priority though
14 May 2007 11:24
Enjoyable visit, welcoming atmosphere
Good range of ales on tap. Small so would be lucky to find a seat when packed...
More of a 'pop in, pop out' than a long stop-over sort of place...
14 May 2007 11:16
If your in a flamboyant mood, you have a flamboyant pub here
Maybe not for everyone, but it was an enjoyable visit. The barman had a group of friends in, student types, all having a laugh together, with an ipod connected for some music selection. But they were chatty and friendly enough, making for a welcome 'they could eventually have poured your choice of pint before you've uttered a word on entry' sort of hostelry...
14 May 2007 11:14
The kareoke section is back in a new guise which is welcoming...
However, having been there a couple of times in the last week, two points have stuck out :-
The service is poor. The staff have no idea who has been waiting the longest. One chubby geezer was standing next to me, eager to get back to his football match, flashing a tenner, wanting to get served next at no expense. Surprise surprise the staff served him before me and a mate, who had been waiting longer. Dispictable...
And when you do get served, the beer was very flat. I asked for a change, which I got, and this was flat as well.
Good atmosphere in the right group but unless they sort out their liquer this place is getting less welcoming...
24 Apr 2007 10:20
Prob the best Spoons in Croydon, although make of that what you wish...
In my opinion, the Ship of Fools is the pits, the George is middle of the road (used to be good starting fodder for a Fri/Sat night but cramped now). This place is spacious, modern feel. It is always fairly pleasant on my visits.
I enjoy the curry nights, I don't moan too much because I know what to expect. Unless the nan bread is rock hard or the curry doesnt move when prodded, Ill give it a decent attempt. Want a 'proper' curry, there's plenty of nice curry houses in South Croydon anyway...
Not brill, but I think it has increased over the years myself.
20 Apr 2007 15:44
Although its a bit of a local dive, and does take a couple of visits to warm up, its a pretty decent affair once you get going.
Friendly and decent staff who do work fast, and the pub has a variety of theme nights, kareoke and bands playing, which add a nice touch.
18 Apr 2007 09:30
Seating outside really nice to watch Brighton life as it comes and go's
Shame about the inside though
17 Apr 2007 11:00
Walk inside. If your a stage artist, your love it. Everyone turns and looks at you. Talk about being sized up as you enter. Uncomfortable.
Outside, nice, relaxing. A bit of a 'can't see much' atmosphere but on a nice day not bad..
17 Apr 2007 10:22
The Moon Under Water, Leicester Square
Decent 'Spoons' Pub
Nice long bar, a fair range on tap. Seems packed enough with decent atmosphere. Weekends gets maybe a little too packed, unless your in those years where the buzz of going out over-whelms the annoyance of 20 mins wait to get served.
But the location is a nice buzz too. So well worth a pop in visit, even if nothing spectacular...
5 Apr 2007 11:10
Decent place. Never really done more than pop in here, and never gotten much into the pub further than the door, but seems fairly busy when been in here and enjoyed the few visits I have.
5 Apr 2007 11:04
The Old Thameside Inn, London Bridge
Seems like a nice pub, with good inside/outside possibilities...
Nice big bar and range on tap
Future visits welcome
15 Mar 2007 10:34
Was very busy on my visit. Took a while to get served but in the bar peoples credit they do seem to notice who's been waiting the longest...
Sat outside, a pleasure, was a bit windy even for a sunny day but to look on the brightside nice seating a view of the rivers...
14 Mar 2007 09:54
Doggetts Coat and Badge, Southwark
Magnificent little venue, with new potential on evert visit
Fairly packed on my visit, showing its popularity
Heard that stars have graced these walls
Unheard of ales grace the taps to try
Sitting on a sunny day in the back 'garden' area with the sun on your back makes you reflect that life can be sweet... at times. Wonder what the higher levels are like...
And yes, terenced, I remember roger roger. This pub is the eqivalent of 'driving along in a sleepy summer sun'
14 Mar 2007 09:42
Nothing particularly wrong with this pub on my visit, but nothing particularly special either.
Is a bit small for a modern style pub, but there is the upstairs to redeem. Reasonable selection on tap.
Think it was just very dead on my visit. Nice to have a quiet pub, but maybe was expecting a bit of atmosphere?
All in all, worth a pop by, jsut a bit bland
14 Mar 2007 09:37
Only popped in for the one
I didn't ever visit the Maple Leaf in its hay day, so sounds like Ive missed an experience. Was disappointed that there was no Molsen on tap, as this was one of the first beers to ever grace my lips... and not done since in ten years, as its done a vanishing act...
Seemed okay on my visit, staff very friendly although there was a few minutes when me and a mate thought we were going to be ignored...
All in all, an okay in-and-out job...

The Three Cups Inn, Stockbridge
They should put up a sign saying 'MIND YOUR HEAD SUNBEAM!!'
8 Jan 2007 11:03
Fast visit so won't say this is a comprehensive review...
Modern feel bar, no ale on tap. Ok atmosphere
And... bar games. Little digital devices that play 'hangman' and a quiz on screen. Nifty!
18 Dec 2006 09:35
I dunno if its the same Landlord as mentioned below on my Fri visit, but he looked like Kevin Smith in my opinion (and he looks like he's had a few prk pies, bless him)
Not a bad pub, yuppie atmosphere but welcoming. Not alot of ale choices but a 'blue label' beer ive never heard of and I can't remember the name admittedly but was fairly strong and quite nice.
Cosy place with friendly punters but nothing out of the ordinary...
18 Dec 2006 09:16
My impression of this place was above average, seems to make an effort yet just doesn't quite hit the mark. Old style, nice big square bar, a fair bit on tap, foods okay though not alot on offer, and a downstairs function room/opens when packed.
Was a bit dark and dingy though. Music playing was nice. Would return but as previous comments suggested not a 'highlight' establishment!
Dunno what to make of posts below detailing 'stabbers!'
10 Dec 2006 17:53
I used to come in here a few times when I guess I was regarded as the 'youthful crowd'. It always amazes me that im sure at least half the people that moan about the 'tinnyboppers' were probably there once, just hit 18 (or slightly younger) that couldn't wait to meet up with their mates on a Fri/Sat night and would be down if they missed one... I know I was. And yet now I prefer a more marure atmosphere with a good Ale on tap... funny how things change
This place isn't bad for a chain pub. Nothing exceptional. Come and enjoy it at quieter times. You may marvel at the huge bar instead of being in cheesed off with its length..
And I still look back at coming here a few years back fondly...
8 Dec 2006 10:39
Interesting venue. Visited on a colder evening and sat outside, and can positively say the heater lamps are a good touch to keep you warm...
Inside sounds bigger than I saw of it, as I went just to the left and the bar there, didn't seem to stretch on that far, but it was fairly packed and the service was fast...
Toilets outside interesting touch. Dunno how much of a jog that would create though! Nicely old fashioned!
30 Nov 2006 18:55
Very decent pub
Maybe limited ale selection but at least it has IPA, a decent one...
Thai window at the back makes a unique touch. Had a meal and it was very decent food.
Staff friendly, with a pool table and jukebox to add to differing taste. Nice on a chilled out evening, don't know what is like on a busy evening. But would return...
17 Nov 2006 12:10
Not a bad pub for the area....
Seems quaint. But if you want to pop in for a Friday night visit it should be pleasant enough. Prop good when it has some live entertainment, though I haven't seen it yet
12 Nov 2006 16:33
Excellent pub, kudos has all been given before
Fast service, great beer/ale range. I only popped in for an hour to meet with some workmates. Wish I could have stayed longer
Was pretty packed to the point in which people were outside. But was alot of good atmosphere for a Fri night. I plan to return...
12 Nov 2006 16:29
It must be a full time job trying to keep this pub at a top spot. And interesting that hardly anyone can do it without trying to put down someone elses opinion. To not like the evening star must be to make you speak like 'innit' is it? Sounds very unbiased.
So the lager/beer in here is excellent... we should rate this pub a 10. So, not taking into account no music atmosphere, hardly any seats. Im sure this would be taken into account with any other pub...
I admire its selection of beers/ale, and im sure if you come here regularly it holds a warm place inside you. I also like a mature atmosphere myself. But im not afraid to say... the star is average at best!
9 Nov 2006 12:14
Its okay in here, interesting decor (waving fans on the walls), but a bit gloomy...
Seems there's a hidden part downstairs and not just a trek to the toilets
Not been packed on my couple of visits here...
27 Oct 2006 11:21
Once dated a girl who lived close to here, so popped in a few times back then. Re-visited recently, and it has gone a bit down-hill...
Its not a total loss, maybe would start here for one. It used to be run by a couple if memory serves, yet they have gone by the looks of it. Me and a mate tried an ale to find it had gone off. We were re-embersed though...
The digital jukebox was a nice addition, and im sure with a good atmosphere can attempt a good evening visit, but there's not a huge range on tap and it isn't anything spectacular...
27 Oct 2006 11:19
Unpleasant pub. Uncomfortable atmosphere. Im sure the regulars know each others names, but they certainly wouldn't wanna know yours...
Popped in with a mate on way to the station, sat at the bar, and got rather unsavory looks from one guy sitting next to us...
Usual offerings on tap.
The only redeeming quality of this place was once visited on a friends stag do last Summer, and with the doors open and a large crowd it was a laugh. Wouldn't recommend at any other time though...
27 Oct 2006 11:14
Well, this place has at least had a lick of paint both inside and out...
New tables, the long baquet table have gone to be replaced by... shorter but the same sort of width tables...!
Its trying to get its act together, and I still have a liking to this place. It seems to be more enjoyable tho in a quieter moment where you can prop yourself at the bar, get in a couple of pints and some pork scrathings, and hope that its an occasion when the beers/ales are in a better than average condition...
16 Oct 2006 10:32
Great Bar, Great Evening
Its got the trendy feel, but totally relaxing. Struggled to get a seat, and on a Sunday Eve. Altho a nuisance, its an admirable atmosphere.
No problems with the service, friendly staff. A bowl of chips ordered came within about 10 mins. Guess you gotta get this place on a good night!
The range on tap was fair, and not your usual lager. Not alot of Ales. A return trip would be welcome!
16 Oct 2006 10:23
The Good Companions, Warlingham
This place deserves the kudos it has received thus far...
Looks like it could be a Harvester/Beefeater, but it is much more than those..
Was in there yest evening, and it looks like the menu is prepared on the day for a wide range of meals to choose from, all home cooked and not tacky, and at a reasonable price too...
The Ale on tap is lovely, managed to sample all three on tap while there. Welcoming atmosphere, bit loud from the locals but it was all in good taste. Would def return...
9 Oct 2006 10:29
The Prince of Wales, Wimbledon
Nice pub, nice atmosphere and homely decor feel, modern yet a tinge of tradional...
Small range of Ale on tap
Good Eve, would def return, tho a small fight broke out just outside, but this was something of an unfortunate situation with yobs outside wanting to start on someone inside.
7 Oct 2006 15:08
Well worth the good reviews this place has generated..
Ive been in here for quiet afternoon sessions and eve packed ones. Both have been charming and enjoyable.
The jukebox is digital and offers what seems fantastic choices. The cold beer goes down a treat.
2 Oct 2006 11:50
Lovely little pub...
Packed at lunchtime. Nice mix of characters. Let the men drink while the wives are clothes shopping!
Nice range on tap...
Welcoming visit would def return...
2 Oct 2006 11:48
If your looking for beer/ale from all over the world, interesting and culteral place. Not alot of 'riff raff' here, and it is welcoming. However, no music, leaving it a bit of a solomn place overall...
Was told that they do have entertainment/live bands occasionally, but the trouble is luck of the drawer stepping in on the night, as its not really advertised..
I don't mind the place, but lets not call it a haven, as its not your a-typical pub.
2 Oct 2006 11:40
More updated, this pub still stands strong in Croydon as a mature and respectable drinking establishment...
Nice range on tap
The only slight drawback I feel when I go in here is the staff never seem to have an urgency to serve you. Sat afternoon at a bar where no one else needed serving, and I still had a little under a 5 min wait while two staff finished what they were doing at a rather slow pace until they came over...
I can understand things need to be done but customer acknowledgement is the first step in a welcome atmosphere...
2 Oct 2006 11:34
A brilliant little gem of a bar hidden away. Looks as barren as anything from the outside, with a large area hidden away at the back. Stage for live music, saw a band called WOLFKANG last night, they were brill. Raw talent gets a chance to shine here...
Would def return
8 Sep 2006 08:27
Can only really comment on the UNDERWORLD nightclub downstairs...
Its the sort of place that seems great on the 1st few visits but degrades gradually over time. Its worth a visit here and there, but its better in a large group, when you have some energy, and in the mood for a general boogie!
Waiting time at the bar is attroutious though
27 Aug 2006 13:25
Had a terrific night in here a couple of years ago for a birthday
It was really enjoyable. Cocktails were grand, and a uni was having a night out, schoolgirls style!
Future visits may never be as great, but it made one memorable night out!
27 Aug 2006 13:09
I have only come here when the beer festival has been on the last 2 years, but on both occasions have gone into the pub as well, as the festivals were held outside in tents.
Haven't graced this place for an evening but its a valid effort. The memorbellia on the wall is a sight to behold. The pub also seems to not waste a valuable inch and still have a far amount of space. And the selection on tap is good!
Well worth a visit
24 Aug 2006 16:08
I dunno what all the fascination is with a pub like this...
In all honesty, i want to like it. I appreciate the range of beer and ales on offer. But... why is this the equivalent of giving a place 10/10?
Judging a place should be on many merits. Atmosphere, music, staff etc. This place is small, atmosphere was okay but nothing tremendous, no music available (okay people like to chat, but there can be a balance) and okay the well renowned ale... its nice but dunno if id want to spend an evening on it. Okay the argument is you can get a standard pint anywhere, but... sometimes its nice to go with what you know...
What a rave-on! Okay, maybe im not ready for this place, Im not saying its bad, but its not the be-all-and-end-all either!
17 Aug 2006 13:08
Nice interior.
Its very red! The front bar is a picture, very interesting decor
Nice range on tap. Its extended next door, the aforementioned 'back bar'
Im sure it was just an off day, but the barstaff were a bit off. When asked when the loos where, all I got was 'too the right'. If id followed their directions, would have ended up pissing on a table....
17 Aug 2006 12:59
By the sound of previous posts, I missed this pubs hay-day...
I like the modern feel of a pub as well as the tradional style, but this place is a little sterile and not alot of good range of tap. Its huge and spacious and has tremendous potential.
17 Aug 2006 12:53
Nice little pub, good friendly staff, not bad range on tap
Seems to have a large 'lunch' following, old and young (watch the mass exodus at 2ish) and music adds a nice atmosphere
Has a bit of a drab feel to the pub but a laugh. Not really large enough for a big group meeting though...
17 Aug 2006 12:48
The Porter and Sorter, Croydon
High regards to this place
The few times ive been in here before ive had a good evening, from a lengthly one to a short visit. Very spacious (considering its give or take knowing its here too) and good mature atmosphere, its a winner. A small range on tap
Music is a nice atmosphere adder
17 Aug 2006 12:45
Although the re-furb doesnt make the place look that different, it has a more polished look somehow
But it has kicked more life into this place. Was in here last night, and they had a live band on. First of all, I hadn't been upstairs in years! Seemingly reserved for private parties for years, it makes it more spacious now. The band wasn't bad for an amateur act, and although the pub was loaded for young drinkers, it can't be faulted for that...
I enjoyed the atmosphere, and the fact that it was a battle for a table on entry, although this could get annoying on planned return visits, its a testament that this pub is one of the more popular venues in Croydon
A good place to spend an evening, unless admittedly your after a quiet chat...
10 Aug 2006 09:04
The kareoke section has now gone, which is a shame as this was a nice and suitable gimmick to draw in the crowd
The bar as it now stands isn't bad, common stuff. Beer on the Pier, a novelty which will give this place regards above most standrad places. It feels scenic as well, but admittedly even that isnt great. They could have a bit of live music to dust it off, and a few more selection on tap. Other than that enjoy it, though bit bland for more than a drop by visit..
7 Aug 2006 14:18
Been awhile since I graced these walls but it was a nice place...
Stylish and modern by Brighton Standards (and far enough away from the lanes so this is fully acceptable) this is quite a student orientated place. Welcoming and a laugh
Well that was a couple of years ago...
7 Aug 2006 13:37
Its not a bad place, family orientated, friendly atmosphere, average decor
Food middle of the road. Passes for a reasonable Sunday visit
1 Aug 2006 14:37
The White Lion of Mortimer, Mitcham
Nothing spectacular. Popped in while passing. Bit of a small establishment. Typical Spoons atmosphere, old men and gents with massive beer bellies escaping the wives on a Monday eve...
The area outside is a court and is quite dark and dodgy. Would have to keep your wits about you
However, some nice guest ales.
1 Aug 2006 14:35
The Railway Bell, Crystal Palace
Great range of Youngs on tap
Nice pub, great Garden and nice function room. Beauty with this place is it makes both a great regulars haunt AND a random place to drop by and feel welcome
Give it a visit if you dont mind the walk
28 Jul 2006 11:03
The Royal Albert, Crystal Palace
An enjoyable little establishment. Nice kept beer, beautiful front beer garden to enjoy a beverage in in the Summer Weather. Welcoming Atmosphere. Maybe one of the more 'normal' pubs in the triangle, as each has a different slant where atmosphere is concerned
And yes bask in the beauty and ponder over that skyline. As Al Murray would say 'Fu**ing beautiful that, prud British moment!'
28 Jul 2006 11:01
Don't know why this is listed as closed down, I was in here the other day...
I like this pub. Its got a nice atmosphere, friendly staff, nothing spectacular on tap but what is there goes down a treat. Added kareoke a couple of times a week. Does draw in a slight chav atmosphere and does get a bit loud at times but it is thankfully in good atmosphere other than 'lets start a fight'
Worth a visit
26 Jul 2006 10:05
The White Hart, Crystal Palace
To be honest, this pub is a bit pretentious.
Its quite lush inside, but goes to the point in feeling a bit un-pub like. Im not saying its not worth a visit, but id prefer popping in for a quiet hour than visiting for a whole evening.
In a nutshell, its an okay pub but I don't think its worth the 'roll out the red carpet' points its generated
13 Jul 2006 10:57
Looked nice instead but the toilets are a state!
And okay, posh Hampstead maybe, but 4 quid for a pint?? For the slice of lemmon floating in it?
Can possibly have a good night out here, if you have a fair bit of dosh to splash...
20 Jun 2006 13:46
Agreed that this is a better llyods bar. Does greatly help with the scenic location. Staff are friendly and bouncers do a good job. Saw them chuck out a dvd flogger!
Was a bit rough after a few ales. Maybe the way they were kept or just one too many! Worth a few visits
20 Jun 2006 13:36
Nicely decorated and comfortable surroundings. The sort of place you can quite happily sit on your own reading a good magazine or the Guardian newspaper (maybe the Sun but bet those trains are full of Guardian readers) waiting for your train...
Which is why that BIG clock comes in handy. Yep even if you've had a few, you shouldn't have much of a problem not missing your train. Prob recognize your time then have trouble running for it!
Joking aside, its a nice pub warranting a return visit!
9 Jun 2006 14:46
It has a certain charm, would pop in occasionally but none too regularly
Very old style. Regular patrons prop the bar up during afternoon while the occasional hard grafter pops in of an evening. Easy to get in random convo's at the bar
Could do with smartening up a bit.
2 Jun 2006 15:03
Unfortunately has gone down-hill... the trouble is you have to ask if its because the original appeal has worn off or the place has declined over time...
In this case i think its the latter. This place has always had its down-comings. Yep can relate to the toilets, sess-pit. Floor is wet and muddy. And when it is packed, its tight to do a 'walkabout' and you get bashed around.
However, its always been the way of this place (in the 3-4 years ive been coming here) and as such it is acepted. Its normally the type of place you come to after a few drinks elsewhere too.
The 'decline' though is back when I started going here, the bands were better and the place was more alive. The upstairs bar used to go in a circle around the centre, instead of along the back wall (it was better back then)
Now a medicre experience, once upon a time used to be the original Walkabout for me before they started springing up everywhere!
26 May 2006 16:19
Seemed ok by me on a visit. Nice studenty atmosphere. Nothing outstanding, though selling sweets (like the penny sweet variety) was an odd touch...
Bit small, worth a pop by.
26 May 2006 10:15
Amusing to add to the last review, as was a 'day tripper' to this place..
Was aiming to soak up the atmosphere of Brighton and a good few pints along the way. This was the 1st place i visited, and was worthy of a return trip.
As Brighton pubs go, its quite tradional. Can imagine it getting quite packed during peak hours (if loads flock to it).
Friendly staff, nice seating, fair range on tap. Nothing outstanding but would visit again. If a local maybe wouldn't visit regularly unless it touched you with those 'golden moments'!
26 May 2006 10:10
Looks small from the outside (but then again so many shops do in Brighton) but is quite big inside!
Tradional on the outside, Modern on the inside. Had no problems with this place, but nothing outstanding about it either. Was in on a quiet day, so don't know what this place is like during peak hours.
Interesting seating and nice bar, nothing spectacular on tap but good if your passing and fancy a good British Pint!
26 May 2006 10:03
Its a pub of hidden charm. If your going to pop in for a quick one, its not going to do it much justice. It certainly can have a grotty feel, and barstaff who are a bit zoned out (they once cut the jukebox off for a chosen cd behind the bar, and then claimed it was 'live music!'). However, if you sit at the bar, they will come up and offer you another one before you finish your pint, and hence the hidden charm...
When they do really have live music, it is very atmospheric, with local talent in. One of the most original nights out in the triangle. It too is a pub that takes huge advantage of longer opening times, again a hidden charm...
Altogether, if you aren't going to put huge demands on a drinking establishment, this is a nice pub to visit. Once was me and a friends pub of choice in the area, now we have branched out a little, but it still pulls us back alot.
Jukebox plays a good selection too and there is a pool table if that takes your fancy...
19 May 2006 15:59
A nice fairly spaceous pub, which has lasted longer in the same condition than alot of other pubs in Croydon. A nice selection of beers and ales on tap, although a little more expensive. More older and mature clientele than most in Croydon (which is probably why its got a higher rating than many, although a pub/bar and its atmosphere bepends on what your looking for generally)
Used to be better when the upstairs was more frequently open (more aimed at private functions these days). Used to be more packed, may be easier to find room now but has declined accordingly with the quality of the pub.
Above average astablishment.

The Portobello Gold, Portobello Road
An updated review..
This pub still seems to be going strong since my 1st visit a few years back. Its got a more traditional feel to it than most of the gastro ones along here
Meantime beer on tap which was a definite plus.
Theres a more prominent restaurant section at the back than what I remember, with some intricate sitting arrangements, inc a ladder to get to a seating area! Don't know what the menu was entirely, but saw oysters and calamari on offer.
Would highly recommend this place
