The Drill, Burntwood

Who chose the lights? I went for a pint - not sunstroke. Still - beer was decent enough (Pedigree - well, what else?). Staff were a pleasant bunch.

3 Feb 2010 21:11

Treguth Inn, Holywell Bay

Lovely little pub down the road into Holywell Bay. Ideal if you're staying at one of the campsites and fancy a proper beer. Lovely pint of Exmoor, they do Food, Cream Teas and Quizzes. Dogs allowed, Children allowed. Beer garden at the front for up to 5 people to soak up the sun/rain.

5 Aug 2009 16:49

Lugger Inn, Polruan

Nice little pub, staff were pleasant enough. Had a pint of Tinners which was too cold by far and somewhat bland unfortunately for me. Dog and Child friendly.

29 Jul 2009 15:53

The Ship Aground, Mortehoe

Found this to be a very pleasant pub. Situated next to the chip shop it has a little garden area at the front to watch the world shuffle by. Plenty of space inside and is all low-hanging beams and tradition. Welcomes Dogs and Children so long as neither makes a mess, and the beers Exmoor and Doom Bar were decent. Meals were a bit pricey, but the aforementioned chip shop wasn't so bear that in mind.
Accepts Credit cards so long as the purchase is over 10. No Cash points in Mortehoe and the nearest is in Woolacombe.
Highly recommended.

3 Jun 2009 14:13

The Old Albion, Crantock

Solemn pub. Had a choice of a pint of Courage Best or half a pint of Courage Best. The pub had the life and soul of a frozen ice pop that's been left, crumpled at the bottom of the freezer under some fishcakes.

2 Jun 2009 10:18

The St Pirans Inn, Holywell Bay

A lovely pub in an ideal location, just a short walk from the beach. Doom Bar, Proper Job and Tribute were all well kept by the landlord and well enjoyed by me. Carlsberg is available and so was some cider but I didn't risk it.
There are four rooms and a big garden and the food is pleasant enough.
Children and dogs welcome if you have either or both (or neither for that matter).

28 May 2009 22:49

The Running Mare, Cobham

The Tea was a decent pint. Great atmosphere. Having said that, the whole pub seemed to be spinning whilst I was inside, they should sort that out.

21 Oct 2008 16:25

Old Plough, Stoke D'Abernon

Beer was alright, can't remember what it was, there was a lot of confusion at the bar, and in my head, but it tasted malty. Decent atmosphere.

21 Oct 2008 16:19

Ye Olde Globe Inn, Berrynarbor

The rooms are incredible, full of all sorts of quirkiness and finery. The beer was decent but I was caught out by the 3 p.m. afternoon closing before I could really plough through their range.

21 Oct 2008 16:14

The Castle Inn, Combe Martin

A fine pub worth the hike down the main street. Went on a Saturday afternoon, the place was practically dead - as were the punters.
Beer was good - a pint of Wolf or something and free pool which is always pleasant.
There's a garden and parking at the back with a pleasant view of the church.

17 Sep 2008 15:34

The Pack O Cards Inn, Combe Martin

Apparently this pub was built in hommage to a pack of cards; 4 floors, 13 windows, 52 doors and at least 2 jokers propping up the bar.
Proper Job was lovely, easily the best pint I had in Combe Martin.
There's a big beer garden at the back which is useful, especially since the inside looks like Tracey Emin's been at it.

17 Sep 2008 15:29

The Focsle Inn, Combe Martin

Located right on the beach, the Focsle is nearly surrounded by outdoor seating and remains the ideal spot for lepers to enjoy a few tabs with their beer.
Beer was alright, only one left on draught was Exmoor and it went down without a hitch.
The bar is a child-free zone but the adjoining restaurant lets the little nippers enjoy everything with chips.

17 Sep 2008 15:08

The Dolphin Inn, Combe Martin

Smashing little pub and by far the best at the seafront.
Eden and Doombar were on tap, both of which were fine.
The food is prepared in a flash and was both tasty and plentiful.
The pub does indeed have one platformed foot wedged firmly in the 70's which is superb.

17 Sep 2008 15:00

The Crown Inn, Alrewas

What a gem of a pub. The snug at the front is one of the most satisfying bars I know, a low-beamed room with a roaring open fire. There's an adjacent room for darts and a restaurant at the back which doubles up as the music venue for visiting local bands at weekends and Mondays.
Nice beer garden at the back for sunny days and boules and the beer is well kept; Pedigree and a guest ale usually, and Leffe on tap if you've run out of Benylin. Occasionly they throw in a beer festival too.
Tia the pub dog will help you eat your crisps and the landlord and landlady are friendly.
The ideal venue for a quick drink and several slow ones.

16 Jul 2008 21:21

The Horn, Reading

Feculent pit!
No real ale on tap and my cottage pie was full of frozen meat.
Save your money and your intenstines and run to the hills.

26 Jul 2007 22:40

The Winner, Brighton

Lovely photo, still - its missing something ... what is it? Ah yes - two enormous Rotweilers on the roof who bark at anything moving within 3 miles. They especially don't like chavs in caps I've noticed. Good doggies.
Flowers on tap - it was like home from home.
Nice pool table too - and a bicycle of outstanding beauty. Its out on a limb up Elm Grove - but well worth the hike.

16 Jul 2007 20:33

The George Hotel, Tideswell

I would have liked this pub a lot more if I hadn't been served beer in plastic. I grudgingly understood why - it was the festival of Well Dressing (one chap explained this celebration was to cajole the wells to produce water during these dry summer months - ahh, I've been knee-deep in irony since!).
Anyrates - none of the other pubs went plastic so shame on the George.

16 Jul 2007 20:05

The Horse and Jockey, Tideswell

Good pub with some lovely White Beer that can cause some serious damage to your ability to see.

16 Jul 2007 19:55

The Moon in the Square, Bournemouth

Thanks to the bouncer for letting us in. Or at least half of us. The other half fell foul of the bouncer's novel excuse: "There are families eating at the moment."
Naturally, we'd hate to disturb these folk gorging on the finest gourmet pennies can by, by drinking beer. In a pub.
What's the World coming too! They'll ban smoking next!

16 Jul 2007 19:48

The Snowdrop, Lewes

Decent end of the road pub. Harveys well kept. Good pub grub. Little yard at the side for watching the empty road.

12 Jul 2007 16:11

The Gardeners Arms, Lewes

What all pubs dream of becoming. There are new beers every day and they all taste incredible. Everyone in there is friendly enough and best of all its just a 12 second(*) dash from my buddy's place.

(*) Unconfirmed

11 Jul 2007 21:30

The Tapp & Hobbit, Bournemouth

Could do better!
Those seats look like they've been recovered from the floods at Toll Bar!
The beer was okay - although they'd run out of Ringwood, they had Deuchars IPA and that tasted fine.
The barstaff were friendly too.

10 Jul 2007 12:46

The Star, Tideswell

Smashing pub and the finest in Tideswell. The beer is very well kept, Marstons Bitter and Old Hooky were both going down very nicely. The landlord and landlady run a pub to be proud of.

4 Jul 2007 12:14

The Red Lion Inn, Litton

Decent little pub off the village green. Three rooms, two with roaring fires and well-kept ales.

4 Jul 2007 12:10

The Royal Oak, Kingsbury

Decent lunchtime pint of Pedigree. Good value food too.
All the staff were friendly and helpful.

2 Jul 2007 17:31

The Eagle Hotel, Buxton

Popped in for a pint, beautiful pint of Hydes and the patrons were friendly enough.

2 Jul 2007 17:17

The Star Inn, Ringwood

Very pleasant pub with Ringwood best and Thumper on tap. Thumper - now there's a beer to proud of!

29 Jun 2007 19:40

The Original White Hart, Ringwood

Decent enough pub after the relentless bars of Bournemouth. Ringwood tasted lovely, and Pedigree was also available but when in Rome...
Carvery was good value and the landlady was very pleasant.

29 Jun 2007 19:38

The Bakers Arms, Bournemouth

Its a gay pub alright - didn't take long to work that one out, especially when one of our crew had ran to join us and came in sweating and panting, he raised more than just eyebrows.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Pedigree on tap, but sadly it hadn't travelled very well.

29 Jun 2007 19:35

Bar Vin, Bournemouth

Decent enough pub on a street full of big-windowed chain blandery. Serves a decent pint of Ringwood and there's plenty of staff to do just that.

27 Jun 2007 20:47

Daisy O'Briens, Bournemouth

Closest thing to a real pub in Bournemouth centre and they've gone and filled it with Irish farm equipment.
Although there are an interesting bunch of pictures which include River Gods of Ireland, the Shannon, the liffey and the er ... Atlantic Ocean.
They've got Ringwood Best on tap and we all enjoyed several pints of that.

27 Jun 2007 20:44

The Litten Tree, Bournemouth

After 10 minutes of waiting for non-existent service, we moved on - which was no great loss, no draught ale, no women and next to no staff. What a lousy apology for a pub.

25 Jun 2007 12:58

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

What were we drinking? I can't remember but it tasted great. Excellent real ale and cider weren't the healthiest preperation for the London to Brighton cycle ride but definitely the most enjoyable.
The band were very good, knocking out a few tunes.
A pub full of happy boozers.

18 Jun 2007 22:56

The Albion, Hove

Excellent pub - memorable for a having a fishtank within one of the supporting columns. The Timothy Taylor's Landlord was in near perfect form and I tried a Harveys and that was well-kept too.
Lots of screens showing every sport under the Sun.

18 Jun 2007 20:02

The Seafield Inn, Hove

A beautiful traditional pub from the outside, and inside and fulll of locals were having a great time.
All of this was let down though: The pint glasses were filthy with ground-in dirt and the Harveys was ropy enough to swing from.
Get the basics right and this could be a great pub.

18 Jun 2007 19:55

The Alehouse, Reading

Impressive warren of a pub selling some truly fine real ales. This was the last place I'd thought I'd find in the centre of Reading.
Beer mats for wallpaper and old gadges yarping on about the price of lead.
Fantastic beer.

14 Jun 2007 16:13

The Butler, Reading

Strolled in on a recommendation - it was like entering the Queen Vic off Eastenders (see BBC1 early evening Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays - all day Sundays).
London Pride was very pleasant which is a rarity. Everyone friendly enough. The bar hatch nearly hit a woman on the head which had everyone (and nearly her) in stitches.
Tiny outdoor at the back for catching the hottest of the days rays.

14 Jun 2007 16:08

Barsh, Cheadle

If I want to drink Euro-fizz, I'll fly to Corfu. Nothing on draught, nothing in the freezer that looked nice - ended up with some bloomin Sol!
Barsh?
Change the 'h' to an 'e' or add an 'it'.

12 Jun 2007 09:46

The Shoulder of Mutton, Walton on Trent

Traditional pub. Excellent Pedigree. The landlord is a friendly chap is the landlady is an English rose.
One salloon, one lounge. The furniture is a bit tired, but then I wasn't there to drink the furniture.

12 Jun 2007 09:32

The White Swan, Walton on Trent

Is there a Bad Beer Guide?
If so - stick a picture of this shambolic excuse for a pub on the front.
And then try the Shoulder of Mutton just down the road.

11 Jun 2007 15:19

The Crown On The Bridge, Caversham

Smart pub with a pleasant beer garden hidden at the back.
The only Chelsea top I saw in there was being worn at the time - and by a gentleman who did bear a passing resemblance to Neil Diamond.
Decent pool table.

11 Jun 2007 11:32

The Griffin, Caversham

The pint of Black Tom was a decent opener for a long session. Food appeared to go down well with the hoi polloi. Beer garden was packed.

11 Jun 2007 10:56

Nags Head, Reading

What a fantastic pub - couldn't believe my luck when I tumbled into this place. 12 ales to choose between, I tried 3 - and they were all delighful. A fine atmosphere too.

11 Jun 2007 10:31

The Horse and Jockey, Freeford

Decent little pub just outside Lichfield. Cosy bar serving Landlord and occasionally Calders and a larger restaurant at the back which serves good food in lovely surroundings. Garden at the back with views of the Tamworth road if you enjoy watching traffic.

23 May 2007 15:38

The Red Lion, Hopwas

Great pub serving grat Bombadier and Pedigree. Double saloon-bar at the front and a tidy restaurant at the back which always seems popular.
Two beer gardens allows children to gawp at the narrowboats and adults to concentrate on their pints.

23 May 2007 15:30

The Fox Inn, Tamworth

Strange roundabout pub.
Its full sofas that swallow you up - one of which was home to around 20 warrior-class thunderflies.
The beer is fine, although the staff appeared to be at least one man down.

22 May 2007 14:44

The Tame Otter, Tamworth

One of the Village Inns chain - decent food and family friendly, if that's what you're after. Very pleasant beer garden with a view of the canal. Decent pint of Pedigree.

22 May 2007 14:27

Brickmakers Arms, Berkswell

Pedigree tasted superb...kept with class. Little bar at the front is cosy with another room joined at the hip for pool. The backroom was full of geriatrics singing Sweet Caroline and Simply The Best in-between dancing and supping - which was a lot better than having to listen to the Eurovision song contest which was on that night.
Landlord and Landlady were both friendly and polite. Jolly good pub.

13 May 2007 11:33

The Bulls Head, Barston

Dartmoor was guesting last night - and it was lovely. The place was packed. Two small bars and a restaurant inside with a large garden at the back add to the pulling power of this fine pub.

13 May 2007 11:12

The Salutation Inn, East Looe

Quality pub in a town full of them. Probably the finest in East Looe, and the beers are extremely well kept. The Sunday roasts looked and smelt great and the sheer volume of oldies shuffling in and out confirmed it was good value too.

12 May 2007 16:24

The Noughts and Crosses, Polperro

Popped into the Noughts for a drink, tiny/cosy front bar where you can throw some arrows. And listen to a talkative parrot. Restaurant at the back a little bigger. The beer was adequate, and the landlord was a very decent chap. Great pub to while away an hour in the afternoon.

12 May 2007 16:16

The Case is Altered, Five Ways

The beers are absolutely superb. To reiterate other reviews, this is a step back in time - no mobile phones allowed, there's no jukebox. I cycled in the other Thursday and the place was packed full of extremely happy punters.

3 May 2007 17:49

The Plough Inn, Rottingdean

Full of parvenu snobs. Apart from that - its a lovely pub in a lovely village serving a decent pint of Harveys.

2 May 2007 11:30

The Downs Hotel, Woodingdean

You can't miss the Downs Hotel, its on the major crossroads in Woodingdean and conviniently has Downs Hotel painted on the roof in case you're parachuting in.
The beer is okay, decent pint of Bombadier. Adnams Broadside and London Pride also available.
Decent little beer garden at the back. Watch out for the parking for punters sign or you could find yourself 50 poorer.

2 May 2007 11:22

The Jug Of Ale, Moseley

Decent pub, lots going on, loud, beer okay.

17 Apr 2007 21:15

Bohemian, Moseley

I asked for a vase of Belgian Kwak the other day and was duly asked for a deposit so I wouldn't run off with the glass and the test-tube rack it came in.
I dunno - this country eh?
Still - its a bit different though I did prefer it about 4 years ago before they went on their frenetic chain of annual remakeovers.

17 Apr 2007 21:13

Elizabeth Of York, Moseley

Its cheap. Its Weatherspoons. Expect the expected.

17 Apr 2007 21:08

Goose At The Fighting Cocks, Moseley

The best thing about the new Goose is the new Polish? barmaid: After asking what draught beer they had on, she offered me several choices which included Carlsberg and Diet Cola. Despite the communication she was very helpful and credit to her. As for the rest of the pub, the prices have gone up, and the locals have gotten 30 years younger. Can't see much difference otherwise.
I'll be interested to see how long this review will last before someone reports it off and replaces it with an anonymous bleet of rousing joy for the place.

17 Apr 2007 21:02

The Patrick Kavanagh, Moseley

This place is always rammed. The Beer is palatable, its either Brew XI or Worthingtons. The main bar has a few Big Screens and the bar at the back has Druid bands and Eco music on occasion. There's another room right next to the toilets if you've got the trots and an outdoor if the weathers anything other than treacherous.

17 Apr 2007 20:41

The Prince of Wales, Moseley

Good pub for the first of the night. The locals all have their own regions so enjoy the no-mans land near the fruit machine. They must be getting Bombadier and Adnams cheap because they're always on. A great beer garden is a short bus ride at the back of the pub and there are two other rooms to keep you guessing where your mates are camped. There was a flash of fisticuffs in one of the backrooms last time I was there but no-one batted an eyelid. Excellent value for money too.

17 Apr 2007 20:32

The Fishermans Arms, East Looe

No dogs allowed it says, apart from the two who live there. Tiny little pub full of smoke and real cider and the odd toothless pirate.

17 Apr 2007 16:52

Bullers Arms, Brixham

More like a creche than a pub. Feels like you're inside of Bob Marley's lung. Pleasant views of the harbour.

27 Mar 2007 22:33

The Manor Inn, Galmpton

Excellent pub. I had a pint of Dartmoor and it was just lovely, one of the finest pints and in lovely surroundings.
Had a meal on the Monday Steak and Guiness pie and that too was tasty and filling.
Compliments to everyone involved in this smashing pub.

13 Mar 2007 18:29

The Royal Oak, Kings Bromley

Super pub in a lovely village between Lichfield and Yoxall. The food in here is fabulous and the restaurant itself is a lovely room. The lounge is very comfortable and the bar's cosy. Beer's good and the beer garden is very pleasant.

25 Feb 2007 19:35

The Church House Inn, Rattery

Lovely old Inn, the staff were the most polite and welcoming you'll find. Sunday Roast was a real treat.
Nice pint of Otter.

22 Feb 2007 16:55

The Rose Hill Tavern, Brighton

After watching the 24 hour Grand Prix on Viaduct Road - its a few moments to amble to a smashing pub to drink superbly kept Sussex ales and throw a few arrows. There are 3 small rooms, one of which has a pool table.
very friendly; the antithesis of the Hare and Hounds just 300 merciful yards down the road.

4 Jan 2007 11:52

One Trick Pony Club, Moseley

The Mick McCarthy of Irish pubs.
When its packed - its so-so. The beer's alright and the service is decent but there are several better pubs just a blarney stones throw away.

19 Dec 2006 15:04

The Old Boat, Alrewas

I last visited the Old Boat for a drink at 10.00 p.m. on a Friday night sometime last year and, after standing at the bar dehydrating for a few minutes, the confused barstaff kindly informed me that they were closed.
One double-take at my watch later and I was off towards the George for an excellent pint of Pedigree.
The Old Boat is not a pub and doesn't sell beer in the evening.

19 Dec 2006 14:39

Red Barn, Woolacombe

If you're partial to the colour red - you can't go far wrong with the Red Barn.
If you're used to the manoeuvrability afforded by a straight jacket, then the Red Barn is definitely for you.
The beer was alright but the floors and tables were constantly littered with dinnertime jetsam.

11 Dec 2006 12:35

Tom Sawyers Tavern, West Looe

The food is to be recommended; the beers are impressive. I have spent many an afternoon sat in Tom Sawyers supping an ale, wishing it was Groundhog day.
I'd have thought Pedigree would be considered a guest ale after its 250 mile hike from Burton, but if its a regular and travels any better than Mr T, then the locals are a very lucky bunch.

10 Dec 2006 23:07

The Ship Inn, Polperro

Probably the friendliest pub in Polperro - everyone seems to get on very well. Only the other night, one local, undersized gentleman asked his pal if he would mind awfully if he were to stick his tongue down his pal's wife's throat!
If you can't sample somebody else's wife's throat, the food tastes better than it looks - and the portions were ample.
The beer was excellent. As was the live music.
As for the free taste test requested above - I think she got away with it.

10 Dec 2006 22:33

The Fountain, Lichfield

Old-fashioned Victorian pub full of old-fashioned Victorians. Decent meals at the back. Great beers.

27 Oct 2006 14:57

Bowling Green, Lichfield

The usual Ember Inn array of shelves and vases changing a no-go pub into a so-so pub. Atmosphere is pleasant enough, beer fine. Quiz is good. Occasionally they throw in some speed-dating nights to humiliate any beasts who've found their way out of Les Dimbles.

17 Oct 2006 16:46

The Chichester Arms, Mortehoe

If I was a pub - this is the one I would be.
Super beer, lovely indoors, wonderful outdoors, there's even a children's room seperate at the back.
Superb.

10 Oct 2006 22:37

The Kings Head, Lichfield

Good cozy pub, well-kept beer, four different rooms and the occasional rabid old gadgie who rumbles at his invisible chums about what the world has come to, letting people like him/them out and about.

8 Oct 2006 19:13

The Queens Head, Lichfield

Superb Pub. The beer's are amongst the best kept in the county. Its old, its small - everyone loves it apart from the Kiddies who spend their pocket money on fizzy spit at trend bars such as Joot and Lloyds. Has a range of cheese if you fancy something savoury. Great atmosphere.

27 Sep 2006 14:04

The Globe, East Looe

I like the Globe. It sits about 100 metres North of the bridge which seems to put off 99% of Looe's wallowing tourists.
Skinners rule the roost with Betty Stogs and Cornish Knocker on tap. Decent pint, restaurant looked nice and a well-maintained pool table made it well worth the visit.

27 Sep 2006 13:55

Browns Cafe Bar, Coventry

"I don't need to give a reason" was the response from the doorman after I queried his decision not to let one of my number into this half-empty pithy bar.
I guess he must have tried the beer in there and was politely advising us against it.

24 Sep 2006 23:00

Lloyds No.1, Lichfield

I'd rather watch an episode of 'Two pints of piss and a packet of shit' than enter Lloyds No.1 and end up consuming much the same thing. This place is so awful - they should rename it the Titus Bramble.

24 Sep 2006 22:40

The Hare & Hounds, Brighton

If this pub was a football team - it would be the San Marino reserves.
God - I wish it was a football team, then every other Saturday it would bugger off and have an away game.
Beer tastes like someone else has drunk it just before you.

24 Sep 2006 20:42

The Cardinals Hat, Worcester

Spent a fine Saturday afternoon with a few pals putting our livers through their paces thanks to a fine choice of Austrian beers. Two little rooms, pleasant and atmospheric. Excellent.

24 Sep 2006 20:32

The Decker, East Looe

30 yards and 30 years from the Admiral Boscarn, The Decker is more like a coffee bar than a pub. Staff pleasant, drinks fine. Different from the rest.

24 Sep 2006 20:25

The Scales Inn, Lichfield

I'd rather go drinking in the Trent and Mersey Canal than Scales. What a dump.

24 Sep 2006 20:17

Fradley Arms Hotel, Fradley

Suits flock to its doors in the afternoons to put some of its bland nosh on expenses. Its dismal. There's a restaurant where children are allowed and there's a creche where adults are allowed. The place stinks of fat and smoke. The beer tastes like cough syrup. What a waste of brick.

24 Sep 2006 19:55

Acorn Inn, Lichfield

Its alright - as soul-destroying Wetherspoon pubs go. Its full of tramps and pirates most of the time but the atmosphere is full of pie-eyed joy and the bar staff do a good job. The beer taste alright for 1.84 a pint.

20 Sep 2006 11:09

Joott, Lichfield

If you've got more money than sense - give it to me. Failing that - give it to Joot/Apres. Either you'll cringe at the bunch of art-hugging middle-flyers who frequent this red world, or you'll love shmoozing with your irrelvant yupster pals.

20 Sep 2006 10:50

The Bullers Arms, East Looe

Can I have a bag of sawdust with my pint of spit?
The main room was shrouded in a dark malevolence, so everyone cramped against the bar to drink their beers which were pretty good! - as were the live band. Everyone seemed happy and well drunk. Decent pub for a drink or two.

20 Sep 2006 00:21

The William IV, Alrewas

Spitting William IV was the son of mad King George III and more importantly namesake of this fine pub. The beer is excellent and the guest beers change regularly. Mixed bunch at the bar and packed on a weekend - but never any trouble.

20 Sep 2006 00:08

The Royal Oak, Kenilworth

Its a real pub alright. Has lock-in written into the deeds. Good pint of mild.

14 Sep 2006 20:38

Clarendon House Hotel, Kenilworth

If there's no room in the Old Bakery and you are scared of crossing the road - this is the place for you! Decent beer in clean, uninspired surroundings.

14 Sep 2006 20:34

The Clarendon Arms, Kenilworth

Not a bad pub for a quick drink before tackling the minor slope to all the good pubs. Nice food if that's what you want. Excellent pint of Scrumpy if you need an excuse to miss work the next day. Bar staff involved in their own micro-soap.

14 Sep 2006 20:27

The Kenilworth, Kenilworth

Certinaly different from the rest. Table service and irrelevant pictures of New York and saxaphone players on the walls. Not cheap.

14 Sep 2006 10:11

The Lion, Kenilworth

The Draught Beer tastes like its been suckled from the wrong end of a sick goat. The place is often rammed, especially if there's football on and the atmosphere is usually friendly and always lively. The punters are a mixed bag and its a change from the rest. Stick to bottled beer though.

14 Sep 2006 10:09

The Green Man, Kenilworth

The Green Man has moved a long way from its former days as a thunderbox. I'm not a big fan of turning traditional pubs into chain pubs, but Ember Inn do it a lot better than anyone else. Beers fine, atmosphere pleasant. If you've been to The Bowling Green in Lichfield - its just like that. And if you haven't - its still just like that.

14 Sep 2006 10:02

Queen and Castle, Kenilworth

Getting soap in your eye is a more satisfying and rewarding experience than a visit to the Queen and Castle. The beer tastes like its been rinsed through a tramp's loincloth, and the food is incinerated on the outside to preserve the ice on the inside.
No atmosphere in the pub, although the garden at the back is lively in the summer.
Despite its proximity, 30 yards from the castle in the lovely Little Virginia - you can never see the castle from the pub.
If you still fancy it though - just save a few quid as they have also started charging for the use of the carpark.

14 Sep 2006 09:54

The Admiral Boscarn, East Looe

Who needs timetravel when you have the Admiral Boscarn? I enjoyed being back in the '70s - it was Karaoke night - like every other night. There was one old gal who had the voice of a songbird but the rest must have been tone deaf - unlike me sadly. And they kept coming back for more, more, more!!! No-one seemed to mind, everyone was laughing and grinning and enjoying it. Sure, there were a few children playing offground tig on the 70's decor, and the draught beer was an embarrasment but the atmosphere was tops. The nightclub upstairs was alright for 3. Definitely worth a visit.

The George And Dragon, Alrewas

A fine pub with 5 rooms, one for food, the other for TV, one for arrows and all for drinking several types of Burton beer. Occasionally a guest beer available, the range of food is varied and tastes great, and the Landlord and Landlady always say hello.

The Old Bakery, Kenilworth

Outstanding beer, easily the finest ales in the town - with an affable atmosphere. You wouldn't stay here all night (unless of course you had a room and could look forward to and excellent breakfast).
Only 20 yards from the finery of the V's and within 200 yards of 3 more pubs and within 300 yards of 2 more. I love this town.

The Famous Virgins and Castle, Kenilworth

Ah the V's ... 600 years ago - there was a tunnel connecting the castle to the pub where the virgins of the town could run to escape deflowerment.
20 years ago - I could buy a Davenports for the princely sum of 1.25.
10 years ago, along with many Kenilworth pubs, they changed it - painted everything - added a teenage creche and filled the pipes with entrails.
5 years ago, they changed it again - tried to make it into a restaurant.
Now, it's back to 20 years ago - apart from the prices. Good pub with several different rooms and a back garden and several different beers to choose between.

Green Man, Willington

After entering via the pool room, some of the locals seemed a bit too closely related for my liking, and my having 10 fingers seemed too few fingers for their liking. The other room was pleasant enough and the place had a good atmosphere. No idea about the beer, but my diet coke came in an extremely clean glass.

Royal Oak, Barton Under Needwood

This is a good pub. Tell your children how pleasant it is. Then remind them it is a proper pub where children aren't allowed. Then laugh at them and amble your way to it and enjoy the excellent range of beers.

The Middle Bell, Barton under Needwood

All the pleasant people relax in beautiful surroundings to dine and laugh the night away. The rest of us crush in to the other bar waiting for a seat which will never appear. The beers are so-so, but the barmaids are gorgeous, something I will impress upon my girlfriend should I ever fancy a trip to Lichfield A&E (where fittingly, the staff nurse is also gorgeous)

The Shoulder of Mutton, Barton under Needwood

This pub looks great from the outside and is pleasant enough on the inside, although everyone seems to squeeze into each other. The decor is a bit rough much like the beer. Still, the landlady is a pleasant charm, if somewhat colourblind, and the food appears to be well-enjoyed by those who I've seen troughing through it on a Friday night.

The Red Lion, Barton under Needwood

This is a good pub for a quick pint and plenty of slow ones. Despite there being only one room, its actually four with rare, invisible partitions. The bar has a the world's smallest tv screen, and there's table football where locals live out the unlikely dreams of Burton Albion. The brothers who run the place are friendly guys and the beer always tastes lovely.

The Rose and Crown, Snettisham

Pretty on the outside - watch your face on entry - low hanging beams aplenty. Very popular with the entire population of Norfolk. Beer tasted fine, cosy rooms of yore at the front. For what the back room lacks in character, it gains in screaming berns attacking their grubby faces and plastic high chairs with cow&gate. Family friendly, food looked and smelled edible.

The Lord Nelson Inn, Marshfield

Visited this pub after a long treck. Only pub in Marshield worth visiting. Had a nice drink of the local brew - tasted fine, came in an unusual glass which is hardly worth the mention its just received, but it did attract some admiring glances from a few red-nosed locals. Had another couple of drinks - staggered away happier than when I'd entered.

The Blue Peter, Polperro

Good beer in fine surroundings. Bar staff did what they were there to do and so did I. Keep it up.

23 Jun 2006 16:09

The Three Pilchards, Polperro

The beers ok, the entertainment was a bit tired, like the furniture. Everyone seemed pleasant enough which is more than can be said for the outside toilets.

22 Jun 2006 19:24

The Old Mill House Inn, Polperro

In the summer the garden is packed and in the winter the locals keep the beer and jokes flowing. Very pleasant night or day.

22 Jun 2006 17:44

The Jolly Sailor, West Looe

Smashing pub, cosy and friendly. The beer tasted good and the barmaid was always smiling.

22 Jun 2006 17:33

The Ship Inn, East Looe

This is the nearest pub to a theme pub in the area but pleasant enough and serves the finest pint of Tinners I've ever had.

10 Feb 2006 13:53

The Harbour Moon, West Looe

What a pub! - happy and lively, everyone rubbing shoulders and enjoying a great night out.

10 Feb 2006 13:50

The Crumplehorn Inn, Polperro

Visited again recently - looks like they've changed it a little. The food's not as magnificent as it was but the atmosphere is still warm and cosy and the drinks are very fine indeed. Especially a pint of Betty.

The Crumplehorn Inn, Polperro

The colder the night, the warmer the welcome. Full of character on the inside and the outside, The Crumplehorn Inn is a pub for all. Tasty guest ales to choose from and the food there is some of the best I've ever eaten, the choice of which is matched by superb value."
