There's a definite East/West Midlands divide in Marston's pubs. In the West they're the old Wolverhampton & Dudley estate; in the main a mixture of unattractive street corner locals and bland, chain-style eateries. In the East. though, Marston's still means tradition and quality. This pub has both in abundance. Good beer, good staff, although it's hard to score as I seemed to be the only customer early on Saturday afternoon. I hope it's usually busier than this because it would be an absolute shame if such an unmissable pub were to struggle for trade. djw - 29 Mar 2014 22:05 |
A really excellent village pub which had been awarded Best Country Pub by CAMRA three years on the trot. Very enjoyable real ale, cheese and ham rolls wrapped in cling film, and the friendliest landlord I've ever come across. As it began to pour with rain and we were some walking distance from our hotel, he even went to the trouble of phoning for a taxi for us. No fruit machines, no loud music, friendly atmosphere, just how a pib should be. Excellent! Paul_Rochdale - 21 Jun 2010 08:51 |
This is a good pub. Tell your children how pleasant it is. Then remind them it is a proper pub where children aren't allowed. Then laugh at them and amble your way to it and enjoy the excellent range of beers. londinieres - 9 Sep 2006 20:54 |
This is a wonderful example of everything a pub should be. It has a small, quarry tiled bar with wooden tables and benches and a slightly larger lounge. The landlady and her husband are doing a fine job of preserving this gem, although I would quibble with the presence of a wide screen TV but as this is hardly ever used except for major sporting events it is not intrusive. Marstons Pedigree and various guest beers,(usually two), are kept in superb conditionand served with a smile. If you are looking for thrills, then don't bother coming but if you are looking for an antidote to large, plastic, overcrowded city bars, it might just be the place doctorpint - 26 Aug 2006 19:39 |
