The Retreat, Reading

Scruffy but characterful back street pub. Two rooms. Lounge has a band on Thursday evening. 7 handpumps including ringwood, harveys and sharpes beers. Worth a visit!

28 Jan 2010 21:28

The Black Lion Hotel, Salford

Popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Extremely quiet but its early days yet. Definately has the look and feel of the New Oxford.
I've only been once before I think - many years ago and it certainly has changed for the better.
Six handpumps with a wide selection of beers, including a porter.
Menu looks very interesting, but chef was off the day we visited.
Bery friendly and knowledgeable barmaid.
Will certainly go back.

6 Nov 2009 15:21

Turnhouse, Edinburgh Airport

Known as the Turnhouse

6 Nov 2009 07:21

The Atlas, West Brompton

5 handpumps only 2 on, serving st Austell tribute and deuchers. Pride had just gone off. Tribute was good. Nice pub. Has a bit of a gastro feel but not too bad. Probably the best pub I've come across in the area and would definately go again.

21 Oct 2009 23:06

The Eagle, Hoxton

5 handpumps but only two on serving black sheep and bombadier. Food acceptable. Awfully busy for a Tuesday evening and too noisy to relax. Marie Lloyd would turn in her grave!

21 Oct 2009 22:56

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

Great! Typical old style london east end (well almost) drinking hole. Didn't think there were many of these left. I imagine my ancestors drank here! Good range of beers, too many to list. A must if you are anywhere nearby.
Pleasently amuused by the little old man who shook everyone by the hand and said cheerio before heading home. Also please to see copies of the stockport & south Manchester opening times in the rack of beer publications.

20 Oct 2009 23:33

The Waterhouse, Manchester

The improvements may be due to the new bar manager?

2 Oct 2009 18:03

The Fitzrovia, Goodge Street

Nice enough if unremarkable single room pub. Serving Ldn pride, gk and duchars. Perfectly acceptable pint of pride. Only 2.50. Service good but lose marks for closing up - lights on, music off, at the stroke of 11.

23 Sep 2009 23:03

The Old Hatchet, Winkfield Row

Good selection of 6 Fullers beers on hand pump, although I wasnt able to sample any of them.
Interesting food menu, including two frogs legs dishes! Food was of a very good standard

10 Sep 2009 13:41

The Alehouse, Reading

Great selection of beers. 6 or 7 hand pumps including real cider. Sampled a very good mild from local brewers West Berkshire.
Liked all the pump clips stuck to the walls - it took me a while to find any I recognised, but I found a couple.
I liked the little rooms / snugs at the back.

10 Sep 2009 13:35

Sweeney and Todd, Reading

4 hand pumps serving Adnams 6X, Tanglefoot and a guest Butcombe Gold, the later of which was very good.
Amazing selection of pies, although only one veggie one - which was very good.
Reminded me of an east end pie and mash shop, with the additiion of beers!

10 Sep 2009 13:31

Nags Head, Reading

Escellent selection of beers. Friendly staff. My only minor fault would be as it is only one large room and there was a dart match going on when I visited, it was understandably a little noisy.
If I am in the area again I will return

10 Sep 2009 13:28

The Golden Ball, Scarborough

Popped in 1/9. Two handpumps, both off.

4 Sep 2009 13:37

The Ship, Scarborough

No handpumps and dominated by two televisions

4 Sep 2009 13:14

The Commercial, Scarborough

2 handpumps neither of which were on until the following day despite the clip being on display

4 Sep 2009 13:03

The Station Inn, Whitby

Possibly the only pub in this town I would consider crossing the road for. Possibly. The line up of beers was much the same as when archivist visited in July, with the addition of daleside blonde instead of the golden pippin (a blessing). We managed to sample most of them. All bar one were good, but nothing to write home about. I'd like there to be a bit more variety in beers and style. I would suggest giving the live music a miss, but the pub quiz is worth giving a go.

3 Sep 2009 23:31

The Bay Hotel, Whitby

4 handpumps serving duchers IPA, john smith cask, directors and theakstons black bull bitter. The later was acceptable. Wide selection of pub standard food. Good views across the bay.

3 Sep 2009 13:33

The Fleece, Whitby

Two handpumps, only one on serving a very poor tetleys cask. Folk band noodlings drown out by piped music. Two rooms. Surprisingly busy probably cos it's cheap by local standards.

2 Sep 2009 23:17

The Endeavour, Whitby

Ok little pub. Many photos etc on walls. 6 handpumps, 5 on. Adnams broadside, duchars IPA, wells bombadier, john smiths cask and something else bog standard. John smiths was acceptable.

2 Sep 2009 23:13

The Shambles, Whitby

Six handpumps serving a selection of theakston and copper dragon beers. The copper dragon challanger IPA was acceptable. Good selection of food served. Good sized portions, but overpriced as with many things in this town. Great view from the balcony across the harbour. Watch out for the seagulls!

2 Sep 2009 18:43

The Black Horse Vaults, Whitby

Proper old fashioned pub. Selectiion of snuff available behind the bar. Uninteresting selection of real ales - black sheep, green king, adnams and youngs kew gold. Very overpriced!

2 Sep 2009 08:36

The Jolly Sailors Inn, Whitby

If ever a pub was misnamed this one was. Grim!

1 Sep 2009 23:17

14, Manchester

closed long ago and now an office block

13 Aug 2009 12:51

Steamhouse, Urmston

Excellent pub. Trafford and Hulme CAMRA pub of the summer 2009. Top class real ale; frozen cider and the food is supposed to be good too.
Watch out for the Christmas beer festival, hopefully on again this year. You may see santa passing by!

1 Aug 2009 17:52

The Manchester and County, Manchester

Know slightly more imaginatively known as The Manchester & County.

30 Jul 2009 11:49

Oddest, Chorlton cum Hardy

Has reopened as Oddest.

13 Jul 2009 22:57

The Grapes, Stockport

Single unit. Just the one bar. Door to smokers area behind bar. Depressing place. Bit like going into a 70s timewarp. Old men drinking to their graves.

28 Jun 2009 11:14

The Queens Arms, New Mills

Must be the local rock pub- seem to have a good area for bands to play. Recently had a lick of paint. Maybe new tenants? Good pint of robbies dissy blonde but not what I'd expect from a robinsons pub.

21 Jun 2009 17:40

The Beehive Inn, New Mills

Chav-tastic! Felt like I'd be knifed if I looked at anyone twice. I imagine the once characterful interior has been ripped out. The only saving grace was a half decent pint of storm breweries gale force.

21 Jun 2009 17:34

The Swan With Two Nicks, Little Bollington

6 handpumps including 3 dunham Massey brews and landlords. However lacked the country pub atmosphere I expected. On a bank holiday monday many disgruntled people seemed to be waiting a long time for their food. Didn't look very appatising so glad I wasn't eating. Staff not exactly welcoming or friendly.

25 May 2009 17:58

The Railway, Stockport

Excellent little pub. 12 hand pumps 8 on when visited including Pennine ales and pictish ales. Good atmosphere. Many bottled belgian and german beers. A proper free house.

30 Apr 2009 22:21

The Pump and Truncheon, Blackpool

As grim as a cold wet day out of season in Blackpool. 6 hand pumps, 4 on when visited but the Shardlow Cavendish Dark wasn't upto much.

29 Apr 2009 19:20

Churchills Bar, Blackpool

Limited selection of real ales as previously mentioned. XXXB was I'm good condition. Probably one of the better pubs in Blackpool. Gay friendly but welcoming to all. Worth a visit of you are in blackpool and want a half decent pint.

29 Apr 2009 17:23

The Bree Louise, Euston

Very surprised to see the likes of pedigree, hobgoblin and banks bitter on offer here today. I have become acoustom to expecting more unusual brews from here. However the Adnams oyster stout made up for it.
I still feel it is not the place for a quiet relaxing pint.

22 Apr 2009 22:20

The Doric Arch, Euston

The last time I was here was before it was called the head of steam to see a band called death by crimpers! I'm sure you can imagine what they were like!
Good selection of well kept light beers including kelham island pale rider which I sampled. More style than the bree. Pity about absolut radio blaring out while many people were watching football on tv. Left at half time

22 Apr 2009 21:17

Mabel's Tavern, Euston

I'm surprised by the negative comments. Does have a lot of Tvs so probably the best pub in the area for watching football. Five SN beers on, including good pint of master brew. Bar staff polite and efficient and prices lower than anywhere else I know round here!

22 Apr 2009 21:11

Ye Olde Swiss Cottage, Swiss Cottage

Hmm. Surprised by the very negative comments. Agreed about the poor lighting and sullen staff, but at least they were quick and efficient! Great price and perfectly acceptable pint of Sam smiths. Beer garden ok. Pity about the roundabout!

18 Apr 2009 14:43

Prince Of Wales, Leeds

Ok pub. A little lifeless. Only noticed two handpumps on - black sheep and spitfire. Had a reasonable pint of spitfire.

11 Apr 2009 16:46

Whitelocks, Leeds

Totally ignored by bar staff. Waited several minutes to be served and then gave up. Dull selection of beers anyway.

11 Apr 2009 16:38

The Victoria Hotel, Leeds

Proper good pub. Good range of beers. Good menu including several veggie options. Lovely interior with booths. Well worth a visit.

11 Apr 2009 13:35

Mr Foley's Cask Ale House, Leeds

Agree totally with sharp. Smelt of vomit. Didn't stay for a drink dispite good range of beers

11 Apr 2009 13:30

The Lloyds Hotel, Chorlton cum Hardy

Yeah but it's a Lees pub, so the beer is shite!

9 Apr 2009 06:44

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Nice pub. Cool music. Shame about the substandard beer

16 Mar 2009 17:25

The Cavendish, Manchester

Now closed

28 Feb 2009 14:22

The Spread Eagle, Chorlton cum Hardy

Awful place, really. Went in on CAMRA business recently. Was glared at by half a dozen pairs of eyes. Although I have to say friendly staff and nice half of mild.

28 Feb 2009 14:19

The Prince of Wales, West Brompton

One of the few proper pubs left within walking distance of Stamford bridge. If anyone knows anymore worth visiting, let me know. 4 hand pumps and 3 beers on when I got to the bar - bombardier, old speckled hen and London pride (pretty uninsipring), only OSH was still on by the time I got served and that ran out by the time I'd drank my pint. Ok it was a football night but I'd expect better

27 Feb 2009 16:54

Oddest, Chorlton cum Hardy

Now closed

26 Jan 2009 12:56

Revise, Chorlton cum Hardy

Now seems to be closed

26 Jan 2009 12:55

Tap and Spile, Grimsby

One of the best pubs in grimsby. Unfortunately never seems to do too well these days. Six hand pumps although only one was in use on boxing day. Currently under a temporary manager

26 Dec 2008 15:11

The Lloyds Arms, Grimsby

It's a rock pub no more no less. Loud music, unsuprisingly. No hand pumps unfortunately.

26 Dec 2008 15:06

The Yarborough Hotel, Grimsby

It's a standard wetherspoons pub, good if you like that. Surprisingly poor quality beer.

26 Dec 2008 15:03

The Tivoli Tavern, Grimsby

Not bad as local pubs go. Had a pint of M & B mild. Too cold but ok. Very much an old style pub. My partners grandparents used to frequent here. Quite atmospheric.

26 Dec 2008 15:00

Baileys Live, Grimsby

Not bad as karaoke pubs go. Could be good for live music. At least there were a couple of hand pumps, one dispensing a reasonable pint of bombadier

26 Dec 2008 14:56

The Bree Louise, Euston

As good as the beer is here, I don't find it very relaxing. And I always forget to get my 50p off:-(

8 Dec 2008 22:14

The Winchester Arms, Taunton

Hmm. Despite all the bad reviews I thought I'd pop in as I'm staying in a nearby hotel. Not quite as bad as I expected. Lively for a Wednesday. Jam session going on. Otter beer acceptable if over priced. Bar staff friendly. Dcor a bit uninspiring. All in all, not too bad.

3 Dec 2008 22:45

The Racehorse Inn, Taunton

Ok pub but nothing special. If this is the best Taunton has to offer, I pity the locals! And I can see why st austells would soon become tiresome.

3 Dec 2008 22:06

Wetherspoons, Milton Keynes

Pretty standard spoons. Not that I visit them often. Serving draft goulden carolus for 1 a half!

26 Nov 2008 16:20

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton cum Hardy

rumoured to be changing to a gastro pub soon. Looking tired but not quite as bad as others have said.

15 Nov 2008 18:55

Odder, Manchester

Bit pretentious. Tries too hard. Staff off handed Three handpumps usually ok. Food hit and miss. Good veggie platter.

15 Nov 2008 18:38

The Head of the River, Oxford

Oh and it cost me 3.15 for a pint!!!

12 Nov 2008 23:15

The Marlborough House, Oxford

I can imagine this was a proper back street local in its day. Closed and boarded up. As others have said looks ripe for redevelopment.

12 Nov 2008 22:36

Folly Bridge Inn, Oxford

Much more down at heel on the inside then it would appear on the outside. Warm welcome and good selection of Wadsworth beer. Pity the pub was dominated by two TV screens. Oh well, could've been worse - it was billed tp have open mike / kareoke in the function room!

12 Nov 2008 22:30

The Head of the River, Oxford

Beer ok. good selection if you like Fullers. Food poor pub quality. Arrived less than five minutes after ordered, via the microwave no doubt.
Had the misfortune to visit when Bobby George "famous" darts player was making a PA. Not the relaxation I needed after a 3 hour train journey after work.

12 Nov 2008 22:27

The Bree Louise, Euston

Been here a few times under it's previous guiese. Apparently changed name and tact about 10 months ago. Small single room pub with bar all along one wall. Looks like at one time there were several different rooms. Excellent selection of 10 real ales. Bit too stark, bright and characterless. Seems like a mini 'spoons. Worth popping in for a pint while waiting for a train but wouldn't stay for long. Has potential but not sure what I think would improve it. Any suggestions?

29 Oct 2008 21:40

The Hat and Feathers, Manchester

I see this pub has been sold. Hopefully it won't be demolished. Maybe it will rise from the ashes like the nearby Angel/Beerhouse!

28 Sep 2008 19:10

The Sydney Arms, Chelsea

has the look of a gastropub however good for a quiet pre match drink if that is what you want. Three handpumps dispensing sharps doom bar, taylors landlord and adnams broadside, which makes a good change from the limited selection available in these parts. Good music selection.

21 Sep 2008 13:17

The Wellington, Birmingham

The cat is called Wellie!
When I visited she was feasting on Peperami curtosy of one of the customers, who she swiped when he wasn't paying her enough attention!

15 Sep 2008 12:42

The Rope and Anchor, Dunham Massey

To be open by Deckers as a flagship restaurant in March

2 Sep 2008 20:50

Negresco, Manchester

Trendy Bar & Restuarant. Food quite good, as it goes. Very dark inside. Interesting decor - based on the Hotel of the same name, in Nice.

14 Aug 2008 12:50

The Volunteer Hotel, Sale

Big, typical Holt's pub. Good quality beer, popular with the local CAMRA group.

13 Aug 2008 12:49

Sandbar, Manchester

Always popular and a good selection of real ales. Comfortable and unpretentious.

13 Aug 2008 12:43

The Church Inn, Manchester

Looks rough and ready but I got a warm welcome on a recent visit (unlike the Cavendish). Pity they stopped doing real ale a few months ago and only had JW Lees Smooth on offer, which I declined.

13 Aug 2008 12:42

The Cavendish, Manchester

Nearly got lynched on a recent visit. Was asked wy I was "filming" and if I was working undercover for Greater Manchester Police. No real ales, so didn't stop for a drink.

13 Aug 2008 12:40

Royal Northern College of Music Bar, Manchester

Excellent find. Worth going into even if you are not going to a concert, if you can put up with the canteen like setting. Had six real ales on including three from Hornbeam.

11 Aug 2008 18:34

The Ducie Arms, Manchester

Visited again recently. Got served this time, possibly because we followed the bar woman into the pub! Very quiet on a early, wet Friday afternoon, outside term time.

11 Aug 2008 18:32

The Grafton Arms, Manchester

Typical large two room Holts pub. OK if you like that sort of thing.

11 Aug 2008 18:29

The Bowling Green, Manchester

Visited recently. OK, single room pub. Black Sheep Ale wasn't up to much.

11 Aug 2008 18:29

The Bakers Vaults, Stockport

OK pub. Probably good for gigs. visited one week day early evening and was very quite.

11 Aug 2008 18:27

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese Inn, Castleton

Nice pub. Warm welcome. Had the Kelham Island Pale Rider which was above average. Wasn't so keen on the Bradfield Farmers Blonde. Veggie food ok, but not exceptional.

11 Aug 2008 18:21

The Peaks Inn, Castleton

Popped my head in on Sunday and felt much the same as the previous reviewer. Only one real ale on - Black Sheep Ale. Sounds like things have changed there alot recently. I noticed it was up for sale.

11 Aug 2008 18:18

The Cheshire Cheese Inn, Hope

Disappointing. Got a less than warm welcome when visiting on Sunday afternoon. Felt like we were interrupting a private party. Had to ask people to move their chairs so we could get to the bar, even though there was plenty of space, we were looked at with contempt. Beer (Peak Ales, Swift Nick) no better than average.

11 Aug 2008 18:16

The Hillary Step, Whalley Range

Always a good range of real ales and bottled beers. I agree with the other comments - too stark and characterless. Guaranteed to suck the life out of me!

7 Aug 2008 13:42

The Bar, Chorlton cum Hardy

Been going since this bar fist opened as a single unit and Chimay and Erdinger were a rare treat!
The longest running of the "new" bars in Chorlton. Always popular.
Food has improved of late and their is always a fine select of real ales. Staff can be a bit surley at times, but that's Chorlton for you!

7 Aug 2008 13:39

Rendezvous, Manchester

This might be called the Overdraft again, judging by the recent photo.

1 Aug 2008 13:43

Mawson, Chorlton on Medlock

This pub is on CAMRAs list of heritage pubs, part 1. Unfortunately they don't serve real ale anymore, so I didn't stay there long enough to admire the pre world war two decor.

1 Aug 2008 13:38

Strawberry Duck, Manchester

Rough, typical Holt's pub.
Was walking along Ashton Canal expecting to find a nice foodie, real ale pub which I'd read an article about it. Never found it and gave u when I got to here!

22 Jul 2008 12:36

The Three Shires, Stockport

Had a nice lunch here on Saturday. I got the impression they've recently improved the menu. Also seem to have a nice area at the back of the pub, good for proper evening meals if they are open!
Good quality Hydes beer on offer.

7 Jul 2008 13:54

The Bay Horse, Manchester

OK pub. No real ale. Do a good Greek style platter. Can get very busy of a weekend evening.

1 Jul 2008 12:55

The City Road Inn, Manchester

I've lived in Manchester for nearly 20 years but have never been to the City Road Inn until recently. Don't know why, maybe cos it's a bit out on a limb. It was very quiet when I popped in on a Sunday afternoon. Think it was father's day, which may account for that. Looks like it has been recently renovated, but still retains a lot of old features. Had just one real on - Landlords but it was a good pint. Worth making the effort to go to.

26 Jun 2008 13:12

The Navigation Inn, Buxworth

Nice pub. Good selection of beer. Bar staff friendly. However food service was slow, arrived cold and chips had a piece of scampy or chicken nugget in them! Not very nice for a veggie. Waitress not interested and hardly apologied.

10 Jun 2008 14:10

Revise, Chorlton cum Hardy

Visited again recently for a gig and have to say the quality of the real ale had definately improved. It was good to see although there was only one hand pump available, it wasn't one of the more run of the mill real ales which was being served

23 May 2008 15:02

The New Oxford, Salford

Excellent pub. Always got a big selection of well kept real ales on. Nice, clean pub with friendly staff and regulars. Well worth the short walk from Manchester city centre.

7 May 2008 13:05

The Trevor Arms, Chorlton cum Hardy

Pretty good for watching football at, despite being a Reds pub! As Scottie says, Kevin the landlord is giving it a go with real ales. Apart from Boddingtons, only ever seems to have one of the two real ale pumps on, whic is usually something quite unusual, but of an average quality and not particularly interesting to taste.

7 May 2008 13:00

The Ape and Apple, Manchester

OK pub. Busy for the Thursday night quiz. Mild unexceptional but the special - Fifth Sense was pretty good.

2 May 2008 14:07

The Crown and Anchor, Manchester

Not your typical Holts' pub, more like a trendy bar down Deansgate. Didn't even have any Mild on when I visited.

2 May 2008 14:05

The Ducie Arms, Manchester

This pub could be really good, but it was a bit of a disapointment for me. Only two real ales on, neither of them inspiring. Not very welcoming - it seemed a bit clique-y.It took me three visits to get a drink here! First time it was closed for no apparent reason and second time there seemed to be no bar staff. After waiting about five minutes, I gave up and left! Oh well, as I work nearby, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt and give it another go sometime.

24 Apr 2008 11:25

Abode, Chorlton

Oops wrong pub - it was Revise!

17 Apr 2008 22:09

Dulcimer, Chorlton cum Hardy

Becoming a favourite of mine in Chorlton. Excellent selection of real ales, often including a mild.
Great value and quality soup and sandwiches too.

17 Apr 2008 22:07

B Lounge @ The Bridge, Deansgate

Three real ale hand pumps but only one - Theakstons Best - was on when I visited.
Vegetarian food average and over priced. Had a reasonable selection but most was unavailable!
Could be good for meat eaters - the Sunday dinner looked ok.
Will give a second chance one day. Maybe.

9 Apr 2008 18:47

Revise, Chorlton cum Hardy

Rough pub/bar.
Doesn't really know if it wants to be a trendy bar or a pub.
Often trying new promotions etc but usually unsuccessful.
Have just started serving real ales; although were off on the day I visited - pipes hadn't been cleaned.
Another customer asked which real ale they were selling and was nearly given an off pint by a clueless bar person, even though the pump clip had been turned around.

6 Apr 2008 21:49

Bar 4 Eighty, Chorlton cum Hardy

Never fails to disappoint.
Have recently started selling real ales, like it's sister bar, Revise.
Both extremely poor quality.

6 Apr 2008 21:47

The Marble Beer House, Chorlton cum Hardy

One of the best pubs in Chorlton. Great for real ales; always got some guest ales on, some good some not so good. Would like to see them selling a few more dark beers.

6 Apr 2008 21:43

The Hobgoblin, Brighton

Interesting typical rock pub. Naturally serve a good pint of Hobgoblin.
Would like to know the history of this pub - has some old stained glass windows with ships on them.
Friendly staff and customers. Thought I might feel out of place with my work suit on, but there was an old lady in a wheelchair there too!

6 Apr 2008 21:23

The Lord Nelson, Brighton

Nice friendly pub. Popular quiz night on Tuesday. Good selection of real ales

6 Apr 2008 21:17

The Great Eastern, Brighton

Nice pub. Busy with a young student-y crowd. Good selection of real ales.

6 Apr 2008 21:13

The Battle of Trafalgar, Brighton

Great friendly littl pub. Worth walking up the hill for!

6 Apr 2008 21:08

The Kings Arms, Waterloo

OK pub but nothing special. Adnams average. Bar staff rude.

6 Apr 2008 19:41

The Beltane Cafe Bar, Buxton

Ok Cafe bar / pub. Had a few real ales on and cider. Good food.

6 Apr 2008 19:29

The Yorkshire Terrier Inn, York

Greatly little pub, at the back of shop. Upstairs is like being in someone's house! Good selection of Yorkshire beers

28 Mar 2008 21:28

The Three Legged Mare, York

Great pub with excellent selection of Yorkshire beers. Good blues guitarist when I was there

28 Mar 2008 21:26

The Tap and Spile, York

Nice big pub. Friendly staff. Probably popular with students. Had a good pint of Cromptons Endeavour

28 Mar 2008 21:24

The Old Abbey Inn, Manchester

Good pint of Duchers. Also had Westons Old Rosie Cider on.
Nice little pub. Very quite probably due to location. Better than all the other Kro bars.

28 Mar 2008 13:31

The Prince of Wales, Gatley

oops - correction it's a Hydes pub!

27 Mar 2008 18:00

The Iguana Bar, Chorlton cum Hardy

Mirth on Monday comedy nights are usually very good. Have seen the occasional band here which have been ok.
Prices not noticably expensive; a bi of a lack of variety. No real ales.

26 Mar 2008 13:43

The Prince of Wales, Gatley

Typical Robinsons pub. Firendly atmosphere. OK, but nothing special.

The Horse and Farrier, Gatley

Proper pub. Good selection of Hydes beers. Visited for the recent beer festival and had a couple of good pints, including the Farrier Festival Ale.
Food typical pub fodder.

26 Mar 2008 13:38

Gothic Bar, Gatley

Not too impressed by this pub. Didn't feel very welcome. Not a big fan of Cains beer.
Dominated by TV screens showing darts at the tim I was there.
Interesting building though; pub has a lot of potential.

26 Mar 2008 13:34

Trof The Deaf Institute, Manchester

Interesting building. Popular with posh pretentious students, not surprising as it is near the universities.
Food ok but over priced.
No real ales but plenty of bottled beer.
Clueless barstaff.

26 Mar 2008 13:29

Trof Northern Quarter, Manchester

Very studenty. Very busy. Interesting decor. No draft real but plenty of bootled beers

26 Mar 2008 13:27

Pi, Chorlton

Probably my favourite bar in Chorlton. Nice cosy atmosphere. Friendly staff. And an excellent range of bottled beers plus two hand pump real ales are always available.
I concur with Scottie - the pies & mash (and mushy peas) are excellent value!

20 Mar 2008 13:51

Escape Bar, Chorlton cum Hardy

Pretty soul-less and uninspiring.
Visited recently when there was a Belgian Beer "festivsl" on. Reasonable selection of bottled beers. No hand pumps / real ales

20 Mar 2008 13:46

Hardy's Well, Rusholme

Big spacious old pub. Was empty when I visited recently (think they'd just opended up). Friendly barman and a reasonable selection of beers - Landlord, Bombardier and Websters.
No frills - just a good pub.

19 Mar 2008 14:02

Welcome Inn, Rusholme

This used to be an interesting little pub. It was near to the old TOTP studios when it was filmed i Manchester many years ago. Up until a little while ago, they had loads of black and white signed photos of the stars of TOTP. Now they are gone.
Used to have several hand pull pubs. Now they are no longer used.
Was made to feel less than welcome on a recent visit, i.e. ignored by the barman, so won't be going there again in the foreseeable future.

19 Mar 2008 13:58

The Salutation, Manchester

Quite a misnomer - possibly one of the rudest barmen I have ever come across. Limited selection of real ales - two hand pumps available, although one was off when I visited.

3 Mar 2008 13:53

The Horse and Jockey, Chorlton cum Hardy

As you can see by the comments, this pub has had it's good times and bad times. Popular with the younger cliental. Has been known to be a bit rough at times.
Popped in for the first time in a while recently, and seems to have improved a little. Selection of real ales available although they were just the usual suspects

3 Mar 2008 13:44

Cord Bar, Manchester

Nice little bar in the Northern Quarter. Decor lives up to the bar's name! Excellent high backed booths. Has a downstairs area where there is often a DJ at the weekend. Good for arty types. Plenty of bottled beersbut no real ales

3 Mar 2008 13:36

The Millstone, Manchester

AKA the Millstone Inn Hotel. Not a bad little traditional pub in the centre of Manchester. Cheap prices. Real Ale limited to J W Lees Bitter, not a favourite of mine

28 Feb 2008 13:25

The Sporting Page, Chelsea

Good pre match meeting place. There are few enough around that side of Stamford Bridge these days with the Ifield, Finches and the Fulham Tup changing names and going up market and the Gunters Arms and Finborough closing.

26 Feb 2008 13:34

Oddest, Chorlton cum Hardy

Excellent bar food; best in Chorlton and most varied I know of. Pity they don't serve real ale

26 Feb 2008 13:30

The White Bear, Knutsford

Very friendly pub. Had Greenalls which you don't often see these days. Good ommlette and chips but avoid the cheese salad!

26 Feb 2008 13:23

The Lord Eldon, Knutsford

Nice friendly little pub. Good real ales. Local CAMRA pub of the season Spring 2008

26 Feb 2008 13:21

Plough, Alperton

grotty old pub. no real ales. Bit of a real ale desert in the area, I guess the Moon on the Water at Wembley High Street is the only option.
Good sized pool/snooker room.
Friendly locals.

26 Feb 2008 13:14

The Golden Fleece, York

Nice little pub, if a little grotty. Good food and excellent real ale. Quite a little find right in the centre of York.

11 Feb 2008 22:09

Brigantes Bar and Brasserie, York

Excellent range of real ales, cider and bottled beers, however this pub is trying too hard - little atmosphere, sirly staff.

11 Feb 2008 22:05

The Black Swan, York

Traditional pub - apparently haunted. Uninspiring range of real ales. Quiet for a Sunday afternoon. Bar staff quite indifferent. Lovely open fire. not much veggie food options.

11 Feb 2008 22:01

Swan With Two Necks, Stockport

Nice little pub. Right in the middle of the pedestrianised Stockport shopping centre; the last pub left in the shopping street. Has recently been saved from threatened closure.

11 Feb 2008 21:23

Bulls Head, Stockport

Almost empty on a Saturday afternoon. Very smelly. Only one handpump real ale - Robinsons Unicorn, which was off when I visited. Didn't stay for long!

11 Feb 2008 21:15

The Railway, Sale

Nice, little typical Robinson's pub. Very friendly staff and customers.

11 Feb 2008 21:10

Swan and Railway, Wigan

Nice little pub; directly opposite Wigan North Western station. Good selection of real ales, friendly staff.
Popped in before a Wigan Athletic match, wearing away colours. No hassle, felt very comfortable.

11 Feb 2008 21:05

The Queens Head, Stockport

Good beer and cider, too. Very busy bar area. Quiet lounge. Friendly customers.

3 Feb 2008 20:06

The Crown Inn, Stockport

Excellent pub. Extensive range of hand pump beers, including real cider. Several different rooms. Homely atmosphere.
Definately worth a visit.

3 Feb 2008 19:57

The Boar's Head, Stockport

Sorry to say didn't get passed the front door. Busy pub. Male dominated. Absolutely stank.

3 Feb 2008 19:35

The Arden Arms, Stockport

Very good pub with interesting interior. Very busy on a Saturday afternoon. Good food including many veggie options. Three Robinsons pumps - Hatters, Unicorn & Tom Cat. Had excellent pint of Hatters.
Worth tracking down.

3 Feb 2008 19:32

Cape, Sale

visited Sunday afternoon. Poor vegetarian food - tasteless veggie burger, veggie cooked to oblivion. No hand pumps. Boddingtons poor.
