The Bridge Inn, Whorlton

Deserves to be a lot busier than it was when the wife and I visited. Not a huge range of beer, but well-kept. The food is excellent both in quality and value. It would be a crying shame of lack of business forced it to follow so many other village pubs.
They appear to be trying to organise events - ladies' and men's lunch days, theme nights, car boot sales etc - and hopefully these are supported by the local community.

Church Inn, Chelmorton

A great little place. Off the beaten track, but worth a detour for the good changing beers, great value food and helpful licensees.
Rooms fine, breakfast excellent. A hidden gem.

The Lantern Pike Inn, Little Hayfield

Great to see a no-dogs pub. I've never understood how shops that serve food don't allow dogs, but some pubs that serve meals do.

The Yorkshire Bridge Inn, Bamford

Stayed here recently ... not as good as it thinks it is. The beer's OK, though a bit pricey, but the food was distinctly average, breakfast well below that level. And if you are in to cat-swinging, the rooms are a disappointment.

The Queens Head Inn, Kettlesing

Out of the way ... yes, concentrates on diners ... yes. But well worth a detour. Food excellent, beer excellent, service friendly and efficent. And what's wrong with a red nose?

The George and Dragon Hotel, Kirkbymoorside

Went when it was not busy and me and the missus were ignored for about 5 minutes or more as we stood at the bar waiting to be served. Staff were serving somebody else and others were coming and going, but not one of them said: "Be with you in a minute" or similar.
We left.

The Rose and Crown, Romaldkirk

For "deep", read "very deep".
The Kirk opposite the church is a bit basic, but much better.

30 Nov 2011 14:20

Black Bull, Bishop Aukland

Somebody needs to show the staff how to keep beer.

30 Nov 2011 12:20

The Maltings, York

Not bad, but certainly not brilliant. Pricey ale, stodgy grub, uncomfortable seating, arrogant boss (don't know if he was the landlord, but you get the evil eye if he believes your thought processes include bad language).
Many better within a few minutes walk.

30 Nov 2011 12:17

The Black Swan, York

Great place ... good beer and top food.
The mixed grill is literally massive and could probably feed two.

19 Oct 2011 13:28

The Railway, Marple

Packed with lively pensioners
Generally middle-aged clientele
Not packed with young people - has a generally middle aged clientele - but spotlessly clean

So are us oldies supposed to apologise for going to the pub?
Rampant ageism, but I do like the last one, implying it's clean DESPITE the age of the customers.
By the way, it is a good pub - for all ages.

19 Oct 2011 13:02

Hare and Hounds, Marple

There's a banner outside this place saying it's in the 2011 Camra Good Beer Guide. Either it's a forgery, or there's something very wrong with the criteria for qualifaction.
Hydes Bitter was warm cloudy and flat, and I'm told others weren't good either.
Food well below average, Sunday roast clearly from the freezer.
Never again.

19 Oct 2011 12:22

The Fleece Inn, Haworth

Good pub. Busy young lady behind the bar did very well with good and drink orders coming from all angles, TT beer as good as ever and food excellent.

10 Jul 2011 14:21

Woolly Sheep Inn, Skipton

As good as any town pub I've ever been in. TT Landlord a bit expensive, as the brewery owns the pub, but food was good, room excellent and service tip-top.

10 Jul 2011 14:17

The Rose and Crown, Burwash

One of those "not as good as it thinks it is" pubs proving that looks can be deceiving.
Beer average, food below average and grossly overpriced.

14 May 2011 13:07

The Chequers Inn, Battle

No sign of "foreign" fags or rowdy kids, but this pub appears to be gradually going downhill. Used to be a cracker, but food now is very average and the beer warm and flat.

14 May 2011 13:03

The Castle, Bodiam

Great location ... wasted.

14 May 2011 13:01

The White Dog, Ewhurst Green

Very helpful staff, good Harvey's Bitter and guest, excellent food, 3 good bedrooms at very reaonable price.
Far, far better than the Castle Inn at Bodiam.

14 May 2011 12:48

Three Shires Inn, Little Langdale

Wonderful location, good beer, food fine.
Service ... total rubbish. Get staff who know how to pull a pint and you'll sell more of it.

4 Jan 2011 15:56

White House, Hartlepool

Of course you should have stayed at the rugby club.
The White House is like most of its customers ... all fur coat and no knickers.

16 Aug 2010 17:31

Rat Race Ale House, Hartlepool

Get a life devmac. They have toilets on trains don't they?
He runs a pub, not a public lav for little girls.
How is he irresonsible and bigotted just because he reserves the use of his bog for customers?
It's people like you who put other people off from going into business.
He's right, he's not there to solve your problems and neither are we. Next time, stay in Seaham ... you deserve each other.

16 Aug 2010 15:20

The Magpie Cafe, Whitby

It's not a pub, but as the name suggests it's a cafe. But a posh one and the fish and chips are brilliant - ideal appetiser for a few pints in one of Whitby's good boozers.

31 May 2010 16:52

Rat Race Ale House, Hartlepool

It's a proper drinking pub - no bar, no loo, no lager, no telly, no music, no frills. The sort of place which is difficult to leave - a swift pint in constant danger of turning into a session.

2 Mar 2010 17:13

The Causeway, Hartlepool

"That's what you get up north".
The froth is for the whippet, or to dip our break and dripping in.

31 Jan 2010 11:34

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Have to agree about prices - they only brew the stuff out the back, and 3 a pint for the bog-standard bitter is shameless over-charging. Had one here last weekend (Oct 2009) before finding better and cheaper beer (shipped in from faraway Stockport) served by friendlier staff at the Crown Inn round the corner.

7 Oct 2009 12:54

Derwent Walk Inn, Ebchester

A good pub, top selection of Jennings ales, and above-average food.

7 Oct 2009 12:52

The Britannia Inn, Elterwater

Still good for its wide variety of well-kept beer, but the bar service is pathetic even when it isn't busy (which isn't often) and the prices for snacks are a disgrace - a small ham sandwich with one cherry tomato and a few pathetic salad leaves was 4.20, but probably cost well under 1 to make.

7 Oct 2009 12:46

The Centurion, Newcastle

And great beer as well. What a place to get anaesthetised before braving the dirty trains.

15 Apr 2009 17:24

The Bacchus, Newcastle

Noisy floor? That's what gave me the headache ... or was it the six pints of Rivet Catcher?

15 Apr 2009 17:21

White Horse Inn, Rutland

Used to be very good, smashing beer and equally good food. Last time, though, the middle-aged head honcho in the food area spent his time loudly slagging off presumably absent members of staff and generally gossiping with two females who clearly were not interested, but afraid to tell him to belt up. Beer still OK, but food mediocre at best. Never again.

15 Apr 2009 17:10

Jackson Stops Inn, Stretton

Not really a pub ... more a restaurant with a bar attached. But very good for all that.

15 Apr 2009 17:06

The Ram Jam Inn, Stretton

Used to be a good stopping place on the A1.
Now, under new management, it's one to avoid - second-rate food, poor beer, poor service.

15 Apr 2009 17:05

The Fox Inn, Temple Ewell

Glad to see this place being appreciated. Found it by accident years ago, and it's still a bit of a hidden gem.

9 Apr 2009 16:44

The Coastguard Inn, St Margarets Bay

Where are some of these reviews coming from? Last time I was there (mid-2008) the food was brill (who orders steak in a place that specialises in fish?), beer perfectly OK and service fine.

9 Apr 2009 16:38

The Lister Arms, Malham

Now a Thwaites house, but still rates highly. Good range of beer, good atmos, and food excellent. Far better than the Buck over the other side of the village.

9 Apr 2009 16:30

The Buck Inn, Malham

Disinterested staff, beer barely drinkable, whisky insultingly expensive (double malt 13, in a chipped glass), they even charged 50p for the printed whisky price list - I kid you not!

9 Apr 2009 16:28

The Yewdale Hotel, Coniston

Upmarket? You must be joking oftenscore6.

9 Apr 2009 16:25

The Crown, Coniston

Not as bad as some say, though where they find dog-rough clientele is a bit of a mystery. Good place to stay.

9 Apr 2009 16:24

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Cashing in on their popularity and they deserve to lose some of it because of that. Miserable staff.

9 Apr 2009 16:22

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

All fur coat and no knickers. No seats in tiny bar, so group of six males sat in "posh" lounge near dining room, and were given black looks by staff for talking and laughing. They lost up to 100 that night ... tough.

9 Apr 2009 16:18

The Robin Hood, Icklesham

Parked up before realising it wasn't the recommended Queens Head. What a treat - beer fine, food outstanding, service brilliant. One of those lucky finds.

9 Apr 2009 16:15

Beamish Mary, Stanley

Not what it used to be. Knocked a wall or two down and in the process of decorating, but some of the character has gone.

9 Apr 2009 16:13

The Filo (First In Last Out), Hastings

THE only pub to go to in Hastings.
