Double Smirnoff (50ml) + dash of Coke; £7 here.
£4.50 in the Wetherspoons - across the road, with better service.
To survive (two nearby pubs have closed), this must improve.
27 Jan 2020 15:14
The Yew Tree 'Time well spent', Reigate Hill
'To Let' sign - now outside this Reigate Hill pub, about a mile from J8/M25.
27 Jan 2020 12:53
No weekend music in this pub now - probably because it's always so busy, anyway - with plenty of clubs/music venues nearby.
26 Jan 2020 12:51
Closed for refurbishment during most of December.
But reopened, just before Christmas.
Work tastefully done, the pub looks very well.
And concentrates, largely, on food.
26 Jan 2020 12:45
Tragic and fatal confrontation outside this pub, during the weekend.
26 Jan 2020 12:17
The Green Man of Grantchester, Grantchester
Yes - sadly closed, unexpectedly.
On January 12th - after 175 years.
Rent was tripled by owners.
Was accessible by punt.
26 Jan 2020 08:51
Unlikely to reopen, as planning permission has been granted for conversion into flats.
11 Jan 2020 10:31
Pub is to reopen following renovations - after fire caused by an electrical fault.
11 Jan 2020 09:23
Whyte Harte Hotel, Bletchingley
Seems to be getting very close to reopening - after refurbishment.
11 Jan 2020 09:16
This public house ceased trading about a dozen years ago - recorded on here. What has replaced it is neither of interest or relevant, to a pub site.
23 May 2019 08:07
Now, an excellent establishment selling good beers, wine - and top class Thai food.
Also showing Sky Sports live - and the friendly staff are well organised by Millie, the efficient and charasmatic bar manager.
Only one of two pubs left in central Redhill, where there were many.
29 Oct 2018 14:23
A new governor here, who has had a highly successful personality bypass.
Stands out like a sore thumb, and a fish out of water - with all the charisma of a deaf hedgehog, with piles.
If this bloke smiled, his face would crack. Welcome to Reigate mate!
16 Oct 2018 22:56
Centre for TV sport in Reigate.
And always busy, with good beer and service.
Music at weekends.
30 Sep 2018 10:18
The last post said nothing about the pub in the first and last sentences - then that this brewery pub sold it's own produce!
14 Sep 2018 10:25
Fox - you didn't know this pub went 5 years ago?
Nor the Crown and Grapes (Sutton) in the last couple of weeks.
Keep up - don't post, or go back to prison!
8 Aug 2018 17:32
Posted as closed over 5 years ago on here. Foz finds it hard tp keep up!
Some assistance. The Crown burned down at the weekend - and The Grapes closed not long before.
In 2018!¡
7 Aug 2018 22:32
The fire started in a flat over the pub, and nobody seems to have been hurt. Unlikely to reopen as pubs down this side of the High Street are dying.
Even the Wetherspoons - The Grapes, just up the road - closed a short while ago. All the busy pubs are towards the station, including the remaining spoon.
6 Aug 2018 15:23
Local redneck haunt - run as a club for them.
Was closed for a long time.
The Horsham pub to avoid, if you're not a a redneck.
Init.
4 Aug 2018 13:40
BITE' s most prolific poster - SM. But why does he bother going into Wetherspoons, as the resultant negative post is always the same.
Other beer drinkers don't need to know 'the back door is now closed/not the pub it once was/third rate wetherspoons'.
SM could try harder before doling out advice whilst despising our biggest and most successful pub company ever, though - by no means - perfect.
As all beer drinkers will know! Campaign at this public company's AGM - instead of constantly repeating the same criticisms here.
6 Jul 2018 12:52
Been in this quiet/small boozer a few times, and noticed the pastime of the owner and some regulars - which is to comment on those customers who have just left.
Not in a particularly flattering way, but with much laughter. Sad really.
One local regular - Robert - seems to be the recipient of significant levels of humorous observations.
But he is, by no means, alone.
3 Jun 2018 22:25
Still closed - with latest name sign (Eagles Nest) taken down. Local newspaper says the property will soon become a shop of some kind.
22 Apr 2018 23:39
This pub has been closed for several years - and will never reopen. NO need to tell us it's still closed!
16 Apr 2018 18:36
My last post is incorrect. There was no stabbing at the Sun - sorry.
20 Jan 2018 11:51
Yes - it's an L shaped bar, which limits visibility. But the staff seem to make little effort to serve customers in order. Regulars though - are well looked after!
20 Jan 2018 09:15
Thanks - the pub was posted as closed on here, eight years ago.
Twice.
4 Aug 2017 15:03
Totally agree with the last post - but one.
Excellent country pub, food great.
If you dislike their beverages, go elsewhere - to the last poster¡
1 Aug 2017 22:55
June 26 reopening after major refurbishment - into gastropub.
Will be dog friendly - handy for adjacent Reigate Heath.
Plenty of parking and a beer garden - and on the edge of town, on A25.
13 Jun 2017 07:32
Closed - notwithstanding it's prime central location. Looks very run down.
11 Jun 2017 09:48
Great and alternative venue. Like Four Hops in Reigate.
Both on West Street(s).
Craft ale, at its best.....
28 May 2017 17:57
Punch have applied for planning permission to build two houses in the garden - which would have four spaces in the already small car park.
Locals are not happy and are raising a petition - like the customers of the Limes and Garibaldi, not far away.
However, unlike those two pubs, Punch say the Old Oak will continue to trade - albeit without it's nice beer-garden.
17 May 2017 09:49
Being refurbished by new owners - expected to reopen mid-June.
10 May 2017 13:44
The Honest Cabbage, Kingston Upon Thames
This ceased trading as a pub over 6 years ago - and was posted as such.
Why tell us again 6 years later!?
10 May 2017 13:29
Now sold to a property developer - but may reopen as a restaurant or pub. If it doesn't become a pub again, Dorking will have no pub on the High Street.
3 May 2017 09:57
Now sold to a property developer - but may reopen as a restaurant or pub. If it doesn't become a pub again, Dorking will have no pub on the High Street.
3 May 2017 09:57
Now The OakTavern and Tap. Unusual new strategy, with a large glasscased micro- brewery in the epicentre. Do they expect us to admire the slow brewing production? Massive missuse of space, which could be used so much better. Undoubtedly will fail again - not least because of the high prices, the internal uninteresting manufacturing site and bar persons, who have had very successful personally bypassed.
1 May 2017 17:23
Closing in the middle of May - for residential development.
23 Apr 2017 22:40
Over the past few years, nearby pubs have closed. The Flying Scud, New Inn, Pendleton and Greyhound for example.
Even in Redhill centre - the Eagles Nest and Dragon are no longer trading as pubs; the former being closed, yet again.
Locals like the Garibaldi (on a town's outskirts) are a thing of the past, sadly. Even town centre pubs find it hard - except Wetherspoons.
The Sun (Wetherspoons) in Redhill is by far the busiest pub in the area - and has traded for four hours (every day) before the others even open.
14 Apr 2017 09:54
And WHY might they make that completely erroneous assumption?
11 Apr 2017 18:47
Closing on 18th April - for a few weeks, to facilitate a long overdue refurbishment.
9 Apr 2017 13:34
Almost 9 (nine!) years ago this pub was posted as closed, on here!!!
6 Apr 2017 18:12
Locals have raised a petition to keep this pub open - with 550 names.
5 Apr 2017 09:24
The Granville (Harvester), Ealing Common
Rubble for over 8 years - and posted as such then!
Why post now, about a non-existent property - bored m8!?
21 Mar 2017 12:36
And Wetherspoons don't have music - and have other rules that us customers must adhere to, if we want to frequent them!
13 Mar 2017 08:17
Planning permission application for housing now refused - pub will continue to trade.
21 Feb 2017 10:22
Served by someone who was never behind a bat before, and was short-changed. No atmosphere in the place, and virtually empy. Has seen better times.
31 Jan 2017 16:05
Visited today - when a group of young spaced out individuals, displaying drug symptomatic behaviour, didn't seem to bother anyone.
28 Jan 2017 14:07
No longer a Wetherspoon.
Bought and reconstituted by Stonegate, the pubco.
25 Jan 2017 10:27
Good for sport - but the governor has had a highly successful personality bypass.
22 Jan 2017 10:18
Closed.
Good Wetherspoon move - as their other pub, The Three Fishes across the road - has now taken all it's business.
21 Jan 2017 14:18
The Duke Of Wellington, East Horsley
Closing this coming weekend - for another major refurbishment!
19 Jan 2017 09:15
The Edmund Tylney, Leatherhead
Everywhere is great, good or cheap - says 123.
A standard spoon is the best in town!
Get out more m8.
17 Jan 2017 17:39
Fine restaurant, pub and hotel - under all headings.
Just shortlisted for a national Best Accommodation award.
In a lovely medieval village, less than 25 miles from London.
11 Jan 2017 16:17
Wetherspoons, Victoria Station
Yes - a football match in London (or even numerous concerts/parades and exhibitions/royal events etc.) will affect Victoria pubs.
Commuters, shoppers, international travellers, tourists, residents - see to that. But this Wetherspoon is busy, well run and bright and airy.
And you can see the station train information boards - as well as having pub screens providing similar information on the Wetherspoon pub screens.
Toilets in the station are a nightmare - in terms of locations, turnstiles, cost etc.
But this Wetherspoon has a free/clean gents - just inside the main door. Used by many people who aren't customers.
10 Jan 2017 18:22
New manager, £270k refurbishment and reopened a week ago - after a month.
Good news for locals - with food and music on the way.
16 Dec 2016 09:11
On wide South Street (with ample parking + Waitrose), this pub - with probably the best position in town - is totally underperforming for two main reasons.
Inept/untrained staff and no investment. Everything is tired, including the toilets. Certainly, the gents are in a third world state - outside!
Nearby, the two West Street pubs - with their recent refurbishments - leave this tired relic of a pub sadly wanting.
15 Dec 2016 18:04
Decor is good.
Food and service are just average, and prices are on the high side.
Our waiter was less than friendly - and rather inefficient.
14 Dec 2016 10:37
Can't see this place opening before Christmas, or ever.
Over the years, there have been several reincarnations/new names/management and themes - all failed.
Because so many Redhill pubs have closed, it has become a Wetherspoon zone - with The Sun as the only decent pub.
With an enormous turnover, and no real competition.
13 Dec 2016 17:50
The Sportsman 'Time Well Spent', Mogador
Like many rural pubs, this one concentrates on food - although the refurbishment allows it to retain a pub atmosphere.
Part of a local pub group of about a dozen, the place is very busy in the summer because of it's rustic location - and ample parking.
Food is excellent, beer varied. Could be the best country pub in Surrey - get there early.
Dogs and horses are welcomed.
12 Dec 2016 15:45
Yes - and, also, the Irish/Manageress(?) is very pleasant and helpful.
11 Oct 2016 17:44
Jack George Phillips, Godalming
Not a very informative/helpful post from onable - except you know what you get, and he/she likes the pub.
10 Oct 2016 18:13
I share your view on real ale.
When you drink it, you think the bottom has fallen out of your world - then, the world falls out of your bottom!
Gteat pub for all sports.
7 Oct 2016 15:59
Loud Irish manager - who loves the sound of his own voice!
Mediocre, under all headings.
With so much potential in terms of size, location etc.
6 Oct 2016 11:16
Small pub, in a courtyard just off the High Street.
Reasonable spot with newspapers and weekend music.
Beer quality is good, and staff are efficient and friendly.
5 Oct 2016 14:55
Heard there's been licence problems, and that's why the pub is closed.
Very capable no-nonsense governor in charge, during recent months.
The best for a very long time; hopefully, he can sort matters out.
5 Oct 2016 13:22
Right about the staff, always chatting to themselves. We ALL have to know about their other jobs, futures (!) and plans for the evening etc.
Just needs better management.
5 Jul 2016 23:29
Yet MORE real ale advice for Mark, the Well's owner - from Jump! Mark has decided not to bother too much about real ale, as he has in his other successful outlets; get over it and/or go elsewhere!
Regulars (increasing every week) are not bothered - and I, in there very frequently, have seen no demand. Mark's expertise and experience - in many other pubs - has allowed him to see other/better areas of potential.
Should we not just wish him well - and not continue to bombard him (and this site) with unwanted and irrelevant real ale propaganda. Particularly, as these ales are easily found elsewhere in the locality.
22 Apr 2016 09:55
Well Jump - your 'Missing a Trick' advice and real ale blackboard suggestion would seem, to some, an effort to change the owner's strategic/business choices.
Mark has got it right at the Well, something evidenced by the increased trade - without the need for any great real ale concentration.
21 Apr 2016 15:22
Jump - the last poster - thinks the owner should prioritise real ale. The owner, and us locals, don't. Solution - go elsewhere, jump.
20 Apr 2016 10:39
Yes, this pub has improved dramatically under new management - although its nearest rivals (Abbot and Junction) are dire
Best venue for Sky sport in town; also the best music venue.
As well as being handy for buses and trains.
Service is with a smile and the beers are well kept.
18 Apr 2016 16:24
Set to reopen again soon - and will be showing the 6 Nations Rugby. Local couple of experienced publicans, who will concentrate on food.
Although small, the pub has great potential due to its excellent High Street location, affluent Surrey locality and nice beer garden. Good luck to them!
4 Feb 2016 17:57
try and get out more rov, and stay off the white powder
your questions will be answered
but see your Vet soon m8
1 Feb 2016 22:18
The closed status was first posted on here, four and a half years ago...
25 Jan 2016 13:40
Open - and if the full/new car park is anything to go by - doing extremely well.
18 Jan 2016 22:52
Put simply...a pub on Reigate High Street should not be this bad....
Awful, dead and hygiene free.
Owen - the new governor has had a personality bypass.
17 Jan 2016 16:46
The Abinger Arms, Abinger Hammer
This place has been a cookery school for years, Richard. Keep up mate.
17 Jan 2016 12:01
One of the worst pub in Surrey.
Inept management, poor hygiene and beer quality.
Staff are dire, slow - but nor slow enough to short change! AVOID...
16 Jan 2016 11:20
This a modern concept - new and inivative. Won't appeal to older posters, like sleepy - who insisted that trams be reintroduced to his lovely Croydon!
10 Jan 2016 18:04
Well, a year after the last post, things have gone downhill badly. In that time, the place has changed hands frequently - with very poor current management. All those barred elsewhere in Epsom seem welcome - and the calibre of staff and customer is very low. Sad - its right in the middle of town; however, the nearby Wetherspoon has cornered the market.
27 Dec 2015 09:34
Kales, why lie on a pub/beer website - and refuse to discuss either. Just other posters, all of whom you have issues with. A spelling course might help - as well as a hobby, job or visit to the pub!
18 Dec 2015 09:14
Mine was the abusive one - to a sad unemployed chap, who has no interest in pubs or beer. Just a habit of boring and insulting posters.
17 Dec 2015 18:10
Seems highly unlikely that the Bulls Head will open in time for Christmas and the New Year. A great pity - badly missed in the Reigate festive period.
12 Dec 2015 10:52
First time here - recently.
Surprised to see a dartboard in a Wetherspoon.
The manager told me its the only one in the entire c1000 pub group.
Demand - was the answer/reason.
5 Dec 2015 22:21
For many of us, the GBG is a blast from the past. The Sun is a better Wetherspoon in terms of food and drink quality - and the staff are friendly. Everything works well under the watchful eye of Tom, the manager.
With a bus stop nearby - as well as a supermarket, bookies, cashpoint and newsagents - its a pleasant spot to pass a bit of time whilst keeping in touch with the world, via the excellent and free Wi-fi.
5 Oct 2015 14:38
On Saturday, one of the two gents toilets was out of order. Fair enough.
But, bearing in mind, it was at the every far side of this large pub and down two flights of stairs - it might well have been a good idea - to place an 'out of order' sign in a more prominent position, (instead of only on the toilet door itself).
This would have saved customers (hundreds of them!) making the trip to the toilet - and down the two flights of stairs, and up again; to begin their trip to the other toilet at the far side of the pub - and down two more flights of stairs.
Our suggestion was ignored and on Saturday, several hundred chaps made this wasted journey. Maybe on Sunday (and later?), as well. Sad that the management are unable to think on their feet.
5 Oct 2015 14:17
A lone trainee barmaid - struggled to serve yesterday. Whilst the governor (50's/specs) chatted with his mates, at the end of the bar.
When he had to, he would quickly go behind the bar (to explain the till), and then resume his converstion outside the bar.
Many waited 10/15 minutes for a drink. Others left.
30 Sep 2015 10:00
River Dart side (though not quite on the water) hotel, with two bars. Adequate - but, like Dartmouth itself, gets far to busy during the summer.
Parking is a nightmare - and, in recent years, a busy park and ride service has been very necessary.
The blue rinse brigade arrive in their hundreds - and the few historic streets and quayside are thronged.
21 Sep 2015 18:09
Rude/low calibre female staff - with zero interest, except in chatting to their mates at the end of the bar. Heavy enough to be prop forwards...
13 Sep 2015 12:42
Most expensive pub in Kingston - for no reason.
Double (50 ml) Smirnoff with a dash of Coke - £7.50!!!
£3 cheaper just down the road, towards the Centre...
30 Aug 2015 20:54
Often quite. And an opportunity for the staff to chat amongst themselves - loudly. Texting is popular with staff too.
Beer/food - good. Like the garden. But could do better overall.
28 Aug 2015 18:21
New management - so the Chelsea photos are long gone.
Just ticking over with very mediocre bar staff, who must have their fag breaks at the side of the pub - whether customers are waiting or not.
People walk in, see nobody behind the bar - and walk out again.
25 Aug 2015 13:42
Gam is now posting about a pub he hasn't been in - since the new management came. And gives an observation of a mate, as well his own imaginations/prognosis for the future. Why not just visit and then review the newly managed outlet?
20 Jul 2015 17:47
Yes - total change of culture. Good refurb, although prices reflect it.
Excellent choice of beers and wine.
I think that food will follow soon; but I didn't see a TV, accommodation option or live music capability.
The absence of the last three is a plus - and the local rufftypes have lost a venue...
6 Jul 2015 15:58
Over the last year on here - one positive post. Fullers' investment has been massive, acquisition cost and refurb - £2/3m.
Yet the place is run by idiots - including a fat/loudmouthed chap who barks orders to staff.
8 Mar 2015 21:41
Prime spot. But the most expensive pub in town.
Geared for tourists.
Down the old back streets, nearby - its quieter and cheaper - for pubgrub etc.
.
8 Mar 2015 21:12
The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common
Plenty of buses through Abinger Common, and nearby.
Daily and almost hourly.
Cider too......
8 Mar 2015 20:54
They have spent a few bob on the Albion - and its pleasant and functional. Great courtyard/stables area. I never knew the pub had stables at the back, but maybe the previous owners didn't either - total pilocks. Future looks good, as long as the dregs don't come back.
28 Sep 2014 22:11
Yes - a fantastic chance for a South Street pub to make a fortune. Next door to a multi-million pound new Waitrose - probably the biggest in Surrey.
Sadly, the management and staff are amateurs - probably don't know they're only holding the place until the obvious refurb, and new operators.
23 Sep 2014 23:03
What a strange post by grumpy - who is 'shocked' at a particular beer being replaced; that decision is entirely the prerogative on the governor.
Nick continues to run his new venture well and, with a wide variety of beers on offer, a visit to this rural establishment is always a pleasure.
30 Jul 2014 12:31
Never been in this place. My comment concerns servingwench's idiotic assertion that a 'pub closed' post is obvious! To whom?
People who haven't passed the particular pub for some time? The 'closed' post is more helpful/informative than most on here.
18 Jun 2014 16:04
I've noticed this also. Not sure about banning children, but these three adults seem to insist on virtually taking over the pub (not only the Red Cross) - and seeing to their child on the counter or at the absolute center of the pub. At peak/after work time! I prefer to go home to see my young one - and not to have an infant being fed (etc.) beside me, at the bar, during my post Ensure calming pint....
6 Nov 2013 10:16
The Royal Oak, Tunbridge Wells
Ivan is something of a fibber, and a bored regular in this pub.
This is a good boozer, friendly staff, excellent beer and hygiene.
But maybe Ivan was in a Freud like mood.....
And should have a chat to himself.
If he can find him.
18 Oct 2013 21:56
No wonder the last poster (but one) said this place was surprisingly quiet on a Friday night. The place has gone downhill rapidly and when I do pass, I now always continue on to Dorking. Pity that a lack of interest or ability has ruined what used to be a half decent boozer.
13 Oct 2013 13:52
Pilgrim, this is not a quiz site. Yes, its open - had three pints there last weekend, top quality. Check it out m8.
11 Oct 2013 21:17
No 'wird women' here now - 7.5 years later. Just about worth a visit if you're in the vicinity, but there are much better establishments in this fine city. At least slerpy doesn't visit!
9 Oct 2013 21:38
Yes. A very bad start. No information. Rude/untrained staff. When the place is open.....
1 Sep 2013 23:25
Waxy's Little Sister, Piccadilly Circus
A large Smirnoff and a dash of coke here is £8.85! 50 ml of vodka, in total. More expensive than the Hilton, Park Lane. Glad I asked for a quote before I walked out.
22 Aug 2013 07:36
All - you the bloke who was asked to leave the Royal Oak in Rusper?
31 Jul 2013 12:18
The Yew Tree 'Time well spent', Reigate Hill
I stop here now and then. Its the last watering hole (on the A217) before hitting the M25. A pleasant place with a handy car park and a good pint of Youngs; newspapers are available.
With regard to the governor (last post), I can confirm his demeanour - but also that he seems to be rarely about. Quite a friendly lady usually serves my pint whilst organising, what appears to be, a busy food trade.
17 Jul 2013 09:46
Clearly, burn147 is the village idiot who has 'forgoton' how to spell. But blokes as thick as him probably never could and just prefer to make fools of themselves on here and in local pubs. Being workshy and unhygienic doesn't help either!
9 Jun 2013 10:06
The bald barman has had a personality bypass - a very sucessful one.....
28 May 2013 16:05
Inarticulate/uneducated posters without syntax or spelling abilities seem alive here.
28 May 2013 15:35
Much improved - well done.
Totally disagree with numpi about Sunday music, though.
28 May 2013 15:32
Dragon - have you ever seen a pool table in any of Wetherspoon's 880 outlets.
Sober up man; they don't need your advice.
24 May 2013 10:51
Reopened last evening after major refurb - looks very nice. Will serve food, other than lunchtimes; worth a try.
24 May 2013 10:09
Kev, like us all, tempest can type what he/she wishes on here. I, for one, agree with the view that TWG goes on a bit (as does TWG, himself, in his last post).
What the Market is missing is atmosphere and trained staff - and the restaurant is rarely busy, as prices remain high compared to the nearby competition.
If this was Reigate's best, I'd pass on the town. But, its not; just the dearest. (Just one example; a pint of Becks in the Market is £3.85; £3.50 down the High Street).
23 Jan 2013 11:23
Yeah....Fox is right. This Chas chap is a bore. He comes in from a building site and takes over. Loudmouth is accurate. His sister is the landlady.
20 Nov 2012 21:56
Those who disagree with surreypub have a vested interest! I don't, but like her/him, I have an opinion and a choice - whether to use this pub or not. I choose the former. The latter should be the obvious choice of surreypub and the articulate enough said. Instead of whinging.
26 Oct 2012 00:49
Yep, only busy week-end evenings. A bit of imagination/flair/enthusiasm is required fast - or the place will soon fold, like The Priory (previous name).
21 Oct 2012 00:04
Not serious beer drinkers? - type for yourself m8! The beer is fine at the JF; will be in there tonight for a gallon or so - and for the excellent Sunday lunch.
20 Oct 2012 15:27
Well'red' - unlike you, Owen is an educated man and able to spell!
But, yes, things will be back to normal soon, and better. This remains a fine pub despite some opinions of others.
20 Oct 2012 10:24
THIS IS not A SITE for ADS - U sad MUPPET. Make your trade like the rest of us!
We (local pubs) are all a lot better - and let our service quality do the talking!
You have a lot to learn and a long way to travel.........
16 Oct 2012 21:46
Yep - food is too pricey. A lot of people are having a beer here and walking the few feet to Cafe Rouge - who are cheaper and don't charge extra for chips and veg.
16 Oct 2012 16:57
Bright agrees with stanzas who wants a pool table in this fine awards winning pub - who's only fault is to be on the small side, a feature of many West End pubs.
15 Oct 2012 10:39
Good pub - if it wasn't for the Basilda Fawlty barmaid, who, some years ago now, had a highly successful personality bypass. She is getting her money's worth!
7 Oct 2012 15:21
yes randolf, knob and plank are misguided. it is up to a pub's owner/management to allow in (or not) who they wish. the same legal principle applies to your home - again, no reasons have to be given.
my local won't serve 'under 21's'
7 Oct 2012 13:24
Why you say that ben and nick worked hard is difficult to fathom, as is most of your post! These guys were never around when it was busy and their management styles/skills left a lot to be desired; if they were any good, Fullers would have kept them!
Fox is correct - some regulars do need pruning. TV Joe and his mates should be first in the queue. With a BITE rating of less than 3, customers' views on this place are clear - and Fullers now must take the opportunity to do what it takes to get a return on their 2m investment.
14 Jun 2012 12:02
Vile and dead pub.....
Good trick. Keep the price list in small print - on the wall behind the bar, unreadable.
Then charge almost 8 for a large vodka and splash.....
In the pub in London Bridge station (nearby), same drink - 3.45.
Illegal?
1 May 2012 21:40
Both JDW's - the Moon and the Grapes are very similar. Same food, drink and staff (who often overlap). Either and both are better than the other Sutton pubs which are very much below average.
30 Apr 2012 10:27
Who/wench - I can read, but you can't spell!. 'Tennet/rummurs/metion' - what are you on/about? As a Redhill resident, I (and many more) will be making my views known to the relevant authorities. 40 police visits to this pub, since last June, is not gossip; read, if you can(!), the court hearing report.
26 Apr 2012 12:56
who/wench - what a wally!
a murder nearby yesterday - ok, you go in to the place; we won't!
unless u have a death wish
and some seem to have one in there.............
25 Apr 2012 21:31
After c40 police visits, this pub's licence is clearly in doubt and, as said before, the freeholder/brewery (Marstons) should step in - and stop putting in inept managers. Complaints to the local authority and the police have been numerous and it has the lowest BITE rating in Surrey. Another chance is not deserved; too many have been given already and this place is likely to follow the Dragon, Greyhound, Scud, New Inn (former pubs nearby) into oblivion.
25 Apr 2012 10:53
This guy Alan is becoming such a bore at various local pubs. An unwashed, unemployed, uneducated fool who has a dog. Don't know how he is allowed anywhere ; he ruins a good after work drink....
5 Mar 2012 21:53
The Stag and Hounds, South Croydon
No Stone - 'cos we're all very happy here in the Stag!
Good beer and company.
When were you in last?
13 Feb 2012 22:02
Fullers are now in situ - with little changes so far, except London Pride. Changes are scheduled for the summer.
13 Feb 2012 10:24
Still boarded up - but has been bought by two local bar operators who are to revamp the place and reopen on a different theme. The town centre location is prime. The new place will not be called The Albion; the name is already down.
7 Feb 2012 11:18
A very lonely place all day. When the staff are twiddling their thumbs, they might clean and paint the place which is looking very tired, inside and out.
6 Feb 2012 01:21
This week, the Surrey Mirror confirms the Fullers' purchase - for 1.8m!
Seems a lot in this market for an under-performing pub taking just 11k a week (the sale particulars said); but they can't do worse that the current owners and staff who made a disaster of this fine pub which must have a gross square footage of about 10,000 sq. ft. in a prominent location. Plenty of potential then...
3 Feb 2012 12:19
Crud, just 'cos you're a beer berk (see your posts of 2/12 & 21/8/11 - too much information!) does not mean you are always right. Are you calling the famous slerpy a liar? I, too, had a Kelham yesterday - and am very glad I'm not a beer expert. Better things to do...
Perhaps, if you had a lie down in a dark room and had a long chat with yourself - you may feel better. And stay off the Double Diamond!
3 Feb 2012 10:09
Staff from agencies or not, just low calibre. Food and beer, mediocre at best - in a pub with the most potential in Surrey. How could Youngs give such a gem to cretins...like Peat, the village idiot (not my words, but those of a Betchworth neighbour!)
Call in around 3pm and see/hear the front bar - just estuary language, with high volumne.
25 Jan 2012 20:22
Agency staff, or otherwise - who really cares? The fact is the staff are fairly mediocre and it is a wonder how Angela Peat (inept, clearly) got such a fine pub, with so much potential, from Youngs. Beer and food are acceptable and a bit over-priced, but no big deal. But to allow, for a long time, a tribe of foul-mouthed idiots free reign is idiotic. Never have I heard one word of vague admonishment! It just doesn't happen in the Red Lion, Royal Oak or Seven Stars (where we now drink).
14 Jan 2012 18:29
Sadly, the last two posters are correct. Drunken louts and an inept landlady don't bode well for this lovely rural pub which has so much potential. Timing is important for visits - when the louts and landlady are sleeping it off. Pity....
9 Jan 2012 15:41
Fanz only makes positive posts for the D&D which, simply, is an estate pub with a clientele which is allowed to do its own thing! Significanly better Redhill pubs are The Sun, Junction and Hone Cottage - all of which serve food and insist on children being monitored. Unlike the D&D...
5 Jan 2012 12:56
JDW spent c1.5m on this fine pub which is well over their normal budget. Aptly called after one of the town's most famous residents, the pub is a gem and compares well with JDW's Opera House in Tunbrige Wells (which still has operas!)
The PC was a cinema and bingo hall and provides visitors with a unique atmosphere reflecting the building's previous uses in another era - and the history of the place is depicted on the walls, and that of Whitstable itself.
Being a listed building made JDW'a work more difficult - as did the asbestos found.
Staff are friendly and the service is excellent. Food and beers are the JDW norm; the ambience is the prime feature, as well as the very high fitting out standards - evidenced, for instance, by the toilets which are probably the best (and cleanest) in Kent!
So pleased are JDW with their creation that they now seek another unit in the town.
4 Jan 2012 14:45
Funboy's points are well made; this place is excellent value for the West End and a pleasant spot. No idea what Bateman is on(!) or about - again...
16 Dec 2011 14:08
Why does boat think that those of us who give an opinion on the D&D only have one pint? This estate pub has a long history of trouble and nothing has changed - although I would agree that the new landlady is working hard to improve things. Boorish behaviour continues unchecked and children often have free reign; it is often almost impossible to gain entry through the smokers outside the main door. Very poor staff are the main problem - they need to be more interested and manage the shouters etc. a lot better.
2 Dec 2011 11:04
This awful pub - and the Dog and Duck in Redhill - are the only sub-three rated pubs on BITE, in East Surrey. And the D&G (an estate pub and home of the male stripper) has a higher rating than The Market which, it seems, can't be given away. All down to an inept management and zero investment.
23 Nov 2011 14:55
Well 'mines' - how do you scan their card when there's no WiFi? No rating left.
23 Nov 2011 14:12
publove should read the other posts.
this pub is closed and boarded up!
5 Nov 2011 16:41
in there tonight - saw a bicycle parked against the counter. no rider. one wheel.
26 Oct 2011 22:46
This barn-like former Magnet & Southern outlet is in an ideal JDW location with a station (bus and train), McDonalds, supermarket, betting shop, dole office - all nearby. But, standards are low in terms of staff/service and hygiene.
Improvements are urgently needed for the Sun to achieve its potential. A 4ish rating is correct.
26 Oct 2011 16:16
known as the kiosk locally, people often have to go outside to turn around.
26 Oct 2011 13:43
No, beerlager is right. This pub is now called The Box Tree (I checked on its website). The box tree grows on Boxhill, very near where this pub is located. Now a fine pub, by any standards; please change to correct name.
15 Sep 2011 16:14
very true, beer. 2363 after one visit in five years knows more about the place than the management!
6 Sep 2011 20:54
Nutfield Priory Hotel, Nutfield
This is a hotel, not a pub. Alcohol is sold only to residents and function attendees. Rather posh.
3 Sep 2011 08:47
The Crown and Sceptre, South Croydon
One negative comment on The Crown in the past 18 months by slerpy and for him to call me, the cellarman, a monkey (just because I am dark skined) is bang out of order.
29 Aug 2011 13:10
Slerpy is an odd chap.
On 23/5, he berates my comments about The Sun - of 23/4. Now, on 23/8, he endorses them!
Nothing has changed recently at the awful Sun, Slerpy - except that we've lost the lovely Emily.
29 Aug 2011 11:58
No....I think randolf7 was talking about a guy called Alan - who has a dog, more articulate than him. Dunno Dawes.....
27 Jul 2011 21:02
What history? This wasn't a very old pub - just badly run, unhygienic and selling vile beer. Bound (and desereved) to fail - just like the Greyhound, New Inn and the Causeway, all nearby.
24 Jul 2011 15:44
Sadly, after the lick of paint, no real change and no food - but same 'regs'........
11 Jul 2011 22:24
To attempt to review a building site in the form of an empty pub which has been closed for business for 3/4 months is, indeed, strange. To say 'it actually works quiet well' when the place is closed for business is simply pure fantasy. As the previous poster says, most of the ingredients which make up a pub have yet to be seen and there would appear to be a stong case for TGW to book a sojourn at the Redhill Home for the Bewildered.
8 Jul 2011 11:10
Food and beer are good here, although the amount of customers (in the lovely Leith Hill area) can sometimes put a strain on service quality. However, overall, this unique out of the way pub is worth a vist despite the virtual campaign by some posters to discredit (giving low ratings etc.) the outlet which is run by a landlady who does it her way. A true and unbiased rating is about 7.
1 Jul 2011 10:30
Yes it is difficult to know when this place is open. I called in today and the young barmaid did'nt know what the new opening hours are - or even what days its open!
25 Jun 2011 23:33
My comment was on this outlet's indifferent service; Mr Slerpy, you don't say whether you agree or otherwise.
I'm sorry but I've no idea what a Freedom Pass is; as far as I know, I'm allowed to go almost anywhere without any type of pass.
23 May 2011 16:26
We all are simians Mr Slerpy - but you are the only one to repeatedly post 'ads' for the Half. A sad habit that had to be addressed.
23 May 2011 15:00
With nearly two dozen 'ads' on here - for the Half - Mr Slerpy (a paid propagandist for the pub) should now just be ignored; shameful really.
23 May 2011 11:38
It does seem to depend which division of Youngs is doing the renovation and I just hope that the Home Cottage will turn out well. The work being carried out is major.
Youngs's have a website, covering all their pubs, where comments can be left about particular establisments. Unlike BITE, they are monitored and I have yet to see a negative view!
23 Apr 2011 11:50
Yes, complacent is the word for the Sun's management (and staff). JDW's formulaic approach often generates this attitude which incorporates boredom; the latter causes a failure to remember even small orders - just made - and to give the right change. Ross and Tom know that standards are not that important in a town where the competition is even more dire and customers are not usually too demanding (when a complaint IS made, the air of incredulity is almost palpable). A pity, because the Jack Firman (the Horley JDW) is in a different league.
23 Apr 2011 11:38
The Old House At Home, Dorking
This pub is being run by a holding company - and it shows!
20 Jan 2011 10:48
It is notewothy that fish has never commented on the Dolphin's beer, food or service quality - but helpfully gives us all advice ('if you don't like the pub, don't go there!')
But this fine site is a forum for all our views - and if the gutter language is acceptable to him/her, fine....
20 Jan 2011 10:39
good refubishment with fine food and offers. beer quality is generally ok and the location is prime with ample car parking. but, as has been pointed out by so many, the front bar crew take all the gloss off.
13 Jan 2011 15:33
When open again, one can only hope for a good/new management (sober!) and that the loud and foul mouthed lout-regulars are barred; a lot of money is being spent and, hopefully, Youngs will seek a return based on better standards - all around.
29 Nov 2010 12:08
A morgue in need of maintenance; but laziness has prevailed for years.
2 Oct 2010 23:43
Gee describes frequent posters as 'wonderful people, with considerable charm' and then sarcastically suggests that they don't have children - just because they willingly comply with pub rules pertaining to them.
His 'Mccann' reference now becomes more sinister - and the comparison between his post of yesterday ('nasty place, even if dying - crawl past, stay away), compared with his of 4am today, implies derangement and/or alcoholism.
29 Sep 2010 10:11
Ratings; (10 is the top one). Starting there.
Subtract :- 1 for low quality beer and food
2 for drunk landlady
2 for lack of management
3 for foulmouthed customers, going unchecked
All these have been well described in previous posts. But...
Add:- 2 for fine location and
1 for olde worlde pub
No, the 5 rating is correct - although, on some occasions, this can hit -1.
28 Sep 2010 12:17
This pub is currently for sale by Fleurets (agents) for 175k with a quoted 11k weekly take!
Something doesn't add up...
7 Sep 2010 10:13
Fin58 has a reasoned view. But to complain other customers is not the answer; it could even be dangerous!
Their presence is obvious and audible to all - including staff and management , paticularly in the afternoons. Until, they go - many of us will continue to frequent the Red Lion.
26 Nov 2009 11:01
The William Bray , Shere Guildford Surrey
Thank you rach and marco. We had a bet that - after the two earlier accurate (but slightly negative posts today), 2/3 more new 'joined today posters' would give maximum 10's. Its an old ploy by mates etc. - but it gives us all a gigle. There's been lots of that on the BITE forums; have a look! Best pub 'in the area'...'I have ever frequented'...You should get out more.
22 Nov 2009 18:42
Clearly, Dolph1967 has a vested interest; his last post said 'the beer is always top notch' - now he says he doesn't drink the stuff!
Tradervic's post is accurate; the pub is still in transition after numerous management changes. For Dolph, to say the food is both 'brilliant & incredible' just reflects his bias and is simply wrong.
Also, tradervic's comments on the 'locals' is spot on.

The Rose and Crown, Writtle
Serious and fatal incident here, yesterday.
