The Glen Rothay Hotel and Badger Bar, Rydal

Passed on here and on the way from Grasmere to Ambleside. Didn't look anything special from the outside being attached to the hotel but do not let this deceive you. Great choice of local ales on pump and bottles from the Winster Brewery available in bottles to drink in our take out. V friendly with discount for CAMRA members.

Tweedies Bar at Dale Lodge Hotel, Grasmere

Best range of real ales we found in the lakes, spoilt for choice. Legendary Cumbrian Ales, Hawkshead, Barngates and Yates was complimented with a couple of beers from outside the county. Now offering discount for CAMRA members. Also a huge beer garden.

The Drunken Duck Inn, Barngates

Visited whilst walking from Ambleside to Coniston. Good choice of their ales so well worth a visit. Heavily leaned towards diners so we was happy sat in the beer garden with a great view of the Ambleside area in the background.

The Station, Oxenholme

We had walked up plenty of hills, so the 5 minutes upto the pub from the station did not put us off before our return journey home to Manchester.
Healthy number of people in during our Monday evening visit with a mix of diners and drinkers. Choice was Hawkshead Bitter, Timothy Taylor Landlord and Moorhouses Blond Witch. The Hawkshead was a fine pint, I had sampled a number of ales around the Lakes and wish I had chosen this one earlier!

21 Aug 2013 21:25

The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston

Full choice of Coniston Beers. I enjoyed Oliver's Light Ale. Coniston is my fav village in the lakes and it's worth the effort to get here for the ale on offer.

21 Aug 2013 21:18

The Sun Hotel, Coniston

Lovely pub with a fair size beer garden set in a beautiful area. Excellent choice of ales, I went for my personal fav, Loweswater Gold from Cumbrian Legendary Ales.

The Duke William, Staveley

As you cannot edit posts my previous comment should have said no frills!

21 Aug 2013 21:00

The Duke William, Staveley

Called in for dinner for refreshments while on a walking holiday. Healthy competition in the village and the Duke William did not have the choice of any Cumbrian ales on our visit. We had the localish Lancaster Blonde which was of a good quality.
Food choice was more than adequate with a good selection of £5 meals including our choices of steak mushroom and ale pie and cumberland sausage. I'm sure you can find higher quality elsewhere in the lakes if your prepared to pay over the odds and be prepared to wait. Here you get frills and value for money.

Barristers, Blackrod

Call on during the local scarecrow festival. Was good to see the local pubs involved in the weekend. I had a lovely ale from one of the local micro breweries, name escapes me! Bar staff friendly enough, will be a shame if what is said in previous message proves true.

13 Aug 2013 19:26

The Railway, Ramsbottom

Called in for the first time last weekend for food and ale. Billboard outside promoted the food menu, so we made our selections and ventured in. We was greeted by an enthusiastic bar maid. Ales on offer from memory were Timothy Taylor's Landlord, Cumberland Ale and my choice which was Lancaster Blond, and a good pint it was.
Food was of a good quality and decent value for money. Pub was relaxed with mix of day trippers and locals and staff very friendly and professional. Reading previous comments it appears changes have been made fairly recently to how it was run?

13 Aug 2013 19:19

Boathouse, Chester

Perfect location overlooking the River Dee with a reasonable sized seating area. Traditional JW Lees bitter was on offer alongside their relatively new Manchester Pale Ale and Streaker Ale.

22 Jun 2013 19:34

The Albion Inn, Chester

Traditional pub, worth visiting for its unspoilt nature. Lots of world war one memorabilia on the walls, fascinating stuff. In terms of real ale, there was two offerings from the Adnan brewery and we couldn't complain about the quality.

22 Jun 2013 19:31

Templar Hotel, Leeds

Visited this pub for the first time last week and i was impressed. Good mix of customers and busy for a midweek evening. Traditional pub which had a good selection of ales, with seven pumps to choose from. I went for a Kelham Island Brewery ale, well kept. I will now be adding this to my list of go to places in the city.

The Duck and Drake, Leeds

This pub is a favourite of mine when drinking in Leeds. Always has a good selection of ales. Has changed hands a few times in recent years but quality has remained consistant. Always at least a couple of dark ales on offer which gets a favourable report from me. I tried the Hazelnut Porter and Saltaire Blond and both were well kept.

30 Mar 2013 08:59

Palace, Leeds

Now a Nicholsons pub with a good selection of ales. We called on a Wednesday evening and it was very busy. It was a free for all at the bar despite the under resourced staffs best efforts. Service was polite and efficent though, I presume the pub was far busier than anticipated.
Decent atmosphere and our pints were in condition.

30 Mar 2013 08:56

The Gaping Goose, Garforth

Warm, cosy traditional feel to this pub. It had a couple of ales on offer which were average. I tried the Wainwright and my friend a Caledonia Ale. There was a healthy mix of customers when we visited on a Monday evening.

30 Mar 2013 08:51

The Newmarket Inn, Garforth

Very friendly locals and bar staff. It had a couple of ales, I tried the Wadsworth 6X which was in decent condition.

30 Mar 2013 08:48

The Mortal Man Inn, Troutbeck

Very handy for a refreshment after the walk from Ambleside. Good selection of real ales and flavoured hot drinks for the tee totalers in your party. A little pricey but a nice old fashioned country pub.

9 Mar 2013 17:18

Queen's Hotel, Ambleside

Rather cold bar area and in need of a little tlc during our mid January visit. Food was average and very plain.
Good selection of locale beers on offer, well kept. Tried a pint of Coniston Brewery Bluebird Bitter and a Yates offering and enjoyed both. As the below opinion, good for a pint but wouldn't be the place I spent an evening relaxing in.

9 Mar 2013 17:16

Hawkshead Brewery Beer Hall, Staveley

Very welcoming bar with full choice of Hawkshead ales. Modern building designed well presenting a comfortable environment. Bar snacks compliment the Hawkshead ales on offer. Well worth a minor de tour from the main route to the Lakes, set in the lovely village of Staveley.

9 Mar 2013 17:11

The Watermill Inn, Ings

Great cosy traditional real ale pub on the main route to Windermere. Many people call in here en route to the Lakes and I would recommend you do too.
Had a pint of Dogth Vadar from their micro brewery and was so impressed I purchased a few that were available in bottles for the road.

9 Mar 2013 17:07

Telfords Warehouse, Chester

100 per cent agree with the previous comments. Outstanding pub in a very pleasant location.
The Weetwood Cheshire Cat was in great form, the friendly bar man stating its very popular with the regulars. Food menu was a little pricey but we decided to stay for food and was glad we did. The food was outstanding and proved good value for money, don't mind paying a little extra for top quality food which was a class above many restaurants I have tried recently. The roast chicken and chorizo rigatoni was outstanding! 9.5/10

9 Mar 2013 10:16

Red Lion, Chester

Nicholsons pub which offers their usually selection of real ale. Lovely pub and well kept ales. Also recommend the Pied Bull next door.

9 Mar 2013 10:09

The Pied Bull, Chester

Cosy pub in the centre of Chester which offers its own ales brewed in it's own microbrewery below the pub. The bar man spoke passionately about the ale and so I tried the Matador which was well kept and an excellent pint. Also sampled a local ale from Red Willow Wreckless which was outstanding. Nice vibe, well worth a visit.

9 Mar 2013 10:07

The Old Harkers Arms, Chester

Very busy when I visited on Thursday evening, appears to be one of the most popular bars in the area. Good selection of ales. I tried the Red Willow Smokeless which I found faultless. Overlooking the canal not far from the station and the Mill Hotel real ale bar.

9 Mar 2013 10:03

The Mill Hotel, Chester

Excellent selection of ales. Stayed in the Mill Hotel for a week on business and to have a real ale bar on site was an unexpected bonus! Bar is open to the public. I tried the Weetwood Bitter which was average, preferred their Cheshire Cat ale that I sampled elsewhere in the city. The bar is lively with mix of locals and hotel residents with a friendly and efficient bar service.

9 Mar 2013 10:00

The Salford Arms Hotel, Salford

As the previous posters stated, a bit mix and match with the decor but I believe its recently changed hands so wait and see how it develops.

Good to see it now offers hand pumped ale and is worth a visit in an area that knows offers great options for the real ale drinker.

11 Dec 2012 18:46

The New Oxford, Salford

Cannot argue with any of the previous posts, this bar is outstanding.
Very friendly staff and a great selection of real ales, by far the best choice in this part of the world. I sampled a couple and they was faultless with some ales ive never seen before.

Good value, high quality pub.

11 Dec 2012 18:44

The Kings Arms, Salford

Surprisingly good selection of ales. I sampled the Greenfields Vanillia Stout which was faultless. Has had a make over from my last visit about 5 years ago. On the expensive side but well worth a visit in an area that has some good quality bars.

11 Dec 2012 18:41

The Eagle Inn, Salford

Gem of a pub, if you like the traditional boozer then this place is a must visit.
Dont let the location put you off, its only a relatively short walk from the edge of Manchester. We was met with friendly banter from fellow customers and the barman.
Had MapleMoon and a seasonal festive ale on pump. My first visit on the 8th Dec, and wont be my last!

11 Dec 2012 18:39

All the below comments are spot on. Cracking little place with 4 ales to choose from on my visit. Nice relaxed atmosphere.

28 Oct 2012 11:49

28 Oct 2012 11:35

The King's Head, Huddersfield

Good selection of ales. Left feeling underwhelmed by the bar staff as I was left waiting while locals came to the bar and was acknowledged immediately while I was served as an after thought. Is a proper boozer and convenient for the train station.

28 Oct 2012 11:33

The Grove Inn, Huddersfield

Great pub, well worth a visit. Has a huge choice of ales and bottled beers. The only negative if you are calling in for one beer is deciding which ale to select!

26 Aug 2011 21:07

Hare and Hounds, Eccles

Beautiful building with a wealth of history attached to it. Sadly its now been converted into a pound shop, well the last time I noticed it was an 89p shop due to a price war with a rival business!! Shame it had to choose this location instead of one of the many empty retail units on Church St.

26 Aug 2011 21:03

Great feel to the place, a traditional Holts house. One of a dying breed, I sincerely hope this pub continues to thrive.
