Warm, cosy traditional feel to this pub. It had a couple of ales on offer which were average. I tried the Wainwright and my friend a Caledonia Ale. There was a healthy mix of customers when we visited on a Monday evening. anybody - 30 Mar 2013 08:51 |
Have been in recently and my experience is in contrast to those below - the beer (Tetley's) was excellent and quick service. Never had a problem with staff or the beer, which has always been good. PapaC - 6 Jun 2011 09:33 |
What a shame. Unwelcoming bar staff (landlady?), downright rude in fact. No eye contact, no 'hello', no smile. And it wasn't just us aging skinheads (with money in our pockets though) that were treated in such a way. Our beer was served to us with no care or courtesy. Admittedly she did at least say 'Thanks' when we paid, albeit begrudgingly. We actually thought that perhaps she mistook us for some other people who had maybe caused trouble at some point. We certainly didn't feel welcome. The beer was awful. Pretty near undrinkable. We had a pint of Thwaites Wainwright and Theakstons Lightfoot. Both were sour, antiseptic tasting wastes of our money. We both left at least a third. We told the bar staff, but she wasn't interested. Just said it was a shame we didn't like it. There may be mitigating circumstances surrounding the attitude and the beer, and if so then I'm sorry for this review. But the bottom line in a real ale pub is the beer, and if it's undrinkable then the pub is going to fail pretty quickly. So, yes what a shame....this pub used to be a fine Tetleys house, and it has the potential to be a superb local. After all, the pub architecture is very appealing (despite there being at least one TV too many), the new decking should be a benefit (although it has become essentially a smoker's shed) and its location in Garforth is ideal. But there is something sadly, badly wrong here. I live in Garforth, and I won't be going back for some time. The George just down the road, despite being modern and more of an eatery, is a far better drinkers experience than the GG. Billyb52 - 28 Apr 2011 12:43 |
Oh dear! Whilst the new owners have not been tempted to knock any walls down, sadly the place has been refurbished in the dreaded 'contemporary' style. I do believe a charming fire place has gone from the Tap Room and flat screens have been installed in every room. Why oh why do people do this and in the process ruin the character of the pub? This was a gem - a genuine community pub with many original features - now it looks like any modern bar, complete with part-tiled floor taverna style. bigjim778 - 31 Aug 2010 11:52 |
This is a gem of a pub which happily still retains its three room layout. It's a former Tetley pub that has some fine 30's features such as internal doors from the days when it was owned by the Melbourne Brewery. Not listed, but it really would be sad if the current owners are tempted to alter it in any major way, as pubs with seperate room layouts are getting quite rare. Always busy, very friendly staff - it's exactly what a 'local' is all about. bigjim778 - 13 Mar 2010 16:55 |
