Now called The Castle Tap, real ale from micros as well as craft beer offerings.
27 Jul 2015 23:35
In the Harp yesterday, still a great selection of beers available, I had London Fields Hopspur and Brick Blenhim Black, both good.
28 Jun 2015 08:31
Also there same day as totpotter1 ,and still the same old Harp, although there are a few changes, some good and some not so, the gents and the ladies have been swapped around which is good, for the blokes anyway, on the downside , currently the opening time has been knocked back from 10:00 to 10:30, not a lot of difference but a pain when planning a crawl onward s, every half hour counts, also the famous sausages are no more, and most beers are now £4.10, Hophead was £3.50 , central London prices but a bit of a hike from Binnies day, still this was expected from Fullers, still a very good pub though and the beer and staff back this up.
6 Mar 2015 20:54
Thank you Binnie for some good years in a fantastic pub, two visits today as good as ever, lets hope the Harp can continue to provide more good times in the future.
2 Aug 2014 20:48
A small craft bar tucked away down Sicilian avenue, the range of craft and cask beers available are displayed on blackboards wrapped around a central brick pier, from which the beer is also dispensed, On my visit the beer was very well kept , maybe the modern interior is not to everyones taste ,but I would say its well worth a visit for the beer alone. It can get busy.
9 Feb 2014 09:01
This is one of the best boozers in London, all the beers I've had in here have been in top condition, great service, maybe a little pricey but you get what you pay for.
9 Nov 2013 11:44
This pub for me has been find of the year for me, the beer is always good and with a very good feel about the place its somewhere I will be returning many times.
9 Nov 2012 20:57
A decent enough pub with a good selection of ales available as you would expect from a Nicholson,s outlet, the only gripe would be the served temperature of beer, never had such a cold pint in my life, obviously the taste was hugely impaired.
23 Oct 2012 09:20
An excellent pub ,it doesn't enjoy the historic quality's of many of its neighbors but the quality of its White Horse ales are second to none and at a decent price .
23 Oct 2012 09:11
Now much improved on the beer front,Darkstar beers regularly feature, usual suspects are the house beers,Courage Best and Doom Bar, but the quality is good and consistant, other guests are available.Because of its location it will always be a food driven pub rather than a boozer but its good to see the efforts are made to keep the beer to a high standard and as such is worth dropping by for a pint.
29 Aug 2012 20:35
Called in yesterday with the sole intention of trying some Brodies,in the past I'd found them in not the best condition ,well today they were and I was Impressed first a pint of Citra followed by London Fields Pale Ale ,both excellent, while enjoying the beer I remembered just what a good pub this is .Dark inside adding to the atmosphere and character, its a small single bar which was fairly busy with a few people watching Andy Murray winning his wimbledon semi final on a small telly to the rear of the pub, there three Brodies on plus a guest of Redemption Pale Ale. This is now a definate port of call for me now when in the covent garden area.
7 Jul 2012 08:05
A good real pub agreed, but if Padderborn thinks this is the only real pub in London he/she should get out more.
6 Jul 2012 20:54
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
As good as ever last Tuesday ,a real pub in every sense of the word,no frills just good beer and a good atmosphere, a haven from the surrounding madness.
29 Jun 2012 21:21
An excellent pub that combines a bohemian atmosphere that mirrors the market street outside ,yet retains a feel off a traditional pub that I find rather appealing. The quality of my choice of drink which was East London Brewery, (ELB), Pale Ale ensures this will be a pub I will be keen to pay a return visit to. Has several cask beers available Crouch Vale Brewers Gold and T.T Landlord as well as the ELB and something else that now escapes me ,a range of Belgian beers and what looks like a decent menu makes this a pub well worth a visit.
29 Jun 2012 21:14
Excellent range of ales , had my first taste of Buntingford Galaxy ,full of hops and citrus flavors I hope to find some more soon. I didn't find the large size of the room detracting from the pub at all and will revisit as soon as possible.
27 Jun 2012 19:06
A couple of pints in here yesterday rounded the day of perfectly, had a Darkstar American Pale Ale followed by a Saltaire Cascade both in excellent condition. It was busy as always at this time of day but its never a problem thanks to the extra efficient staff.Always make a point of visiting here as should any lover of real pubs.
27 Jun 2012 18:48
One of the best pubs in Reading, unsurpassed range of beers available on 12 hand pumps arranged by strength.I settled for the low end of strength and had a very nice pint of Loddon Hoppit.
21 Jun 2012 21:41
I didn't realize such a thing as an excellent pint of Doom Bar still existed .
21 Jun 2012 21:31
The Dulwich Woodhouse, Sydenham
Have to agree with Pat on this one, another pub ruined.
17 Jun 2012 08:03
The Coach and Horses, Rotherwick
A pleasantly situated country pub serving Hall & Woodhouse beers ,two small bar areas with additional seating dotted around the front half of the pub,the rear half is set out for dining. Outside seating at the front of the pub and a beer garden at the rear overlooking the Hampshire countryside, however tried a pint of Hopping Hare which proved to be rather flat and lifeless after ten minutes of pouring, so turned to the other offering Badger Best I think, Cant exactly recall as it was even more uninspiring than the first. It dosnt matter how good a pub may look ,if the beers not up to it , its a waste of time. wont go out of my way to revisit.
2 Jun 2012 10:33
Very busy Saturday lunchtime as to be expected pre Farnham Beerex. Decent Shepherd Neame beers , but a bit expensive at 3.60 a pint for a whitstable bay. It remains though one of Farnham's better pubs.
1 May 2012 22:20
I'd take this pub below par than an atmosphere devoid Wetherspoons anyday.
1 May 2012 22:10
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
The Waggon and Horses ,North Hampshire CAMRA pub of the year runner up 2011, North Hampshire CAMRA pub of the year winner 2012. Yet the pub has been omitted from the good beer guide for the last two years , I think CAMRA need to look at their good beer guide voting systems as it currently dosn't make much sense.
25 Mar 2012 22:43
De Havilland Arms, Elvetham Heath
Purpose built pub, built in the last 10 or 15 years or so but nicely done ,looks a lot older.Set out more as a restaurant than a pub , Hall and Woodhouse beers available were Badger best, Tanglefoot and Firkin Fox . I had the fox which was served in a branded Firkin Fox glass. I have to say I was pleasantly suprised by the quality of the beer.As a pub I have in the past only rated it 5/10 but taking beer quality into account i'm upping it to 6.Still not a place I would travel to for a drink ,but if your local its right next to morrisons supermarket so it might have it's use's when you have to go shopping.
23 Mar 2012 14:06
Called in today on my way to catch a train. Sizable one bar pub, dark painted wood and fairly gloomy although interesting look inside, it put me in mind of a large version of a 1940s/50s waiting room in a train station,(not that i'm of an age to remember such a thing). Beer available was to me rather disappointing ,Andwell's King John and Gold muddler, I had the latter which while condition wise was ok I find in my opinion all their beers Iv'e tried to date to be rather bland and uninspiring. With no other choice available it was a brief visit. In summary an interesting pub interior wise but not one I would revisit unless the beer choice changed for the better. only a 5/10 for me.
22 Mar 2012 21:20
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Two guests from Dark Star today, the ever popular Hophead and the stunningly impressive American Pale Ale straight from the barrel. Excellent.
20 Mar 2012 21:12
Another visit today, decent pint of cropcircle, other beers available were ,from West Berks Brewery,Mags Mild, Old Father Thames and D.r Hexters Healer, also Granny Wouldn't Like it from Wolf,Church End's Bad Rabbit, Mole End's Paddy's Tarmac Tipple and Saxon City Dubbonni. The Choice never disappoints. The Hobgoblin closes 31/3/12 and reopens on 3/4/12 under the new name of the Alehouse , a change forced on the pub by Marston's who own the name since acquiring Wychwood Brewery, It will still be the same pub bar the name and a lick of paint. With beer this good and diverse you've got to visit if in Reading.
20 Mar 2012 21:07
Decent enough pub with three hand pumps serving today Green king Abbot , Young's London Porter and Caledonian Dutchman. The Dutchman was in excellent condition. Very quiet given the early hour , only called in while waiting for the Allied Arms over the road to open at 12.00,but I was glad I did , worth a look for a pint.
20 Mar 2012 20:35
Old traditional two bar pub , five hand pumps in the rear bar, didn't check if there were any more in the front bar. Beers on I was aware of were Young's Special,London Pride,Ringwood Best, Hobgoblin and Loddon Hullabaloo, not too bad a selection, I opted for a pint of the Hullabaloo as it was the only beer i'd not tried before, it was very nice albeit at 3.60 for a 4.2 % beer a little pricey as previously commented, however a pub I would recommend and will revisit.
20 Mar 2012 20:19
Nice pint of Maggs Mild today,at 3.00 a pint not bad also. Eight beers available , three from West Berks Brewery and five guests plus several real ciders and perrys, including the awesome Kenny Cramps Double Vision on hand pump. Currently undergoing preparation for redecoration so the walls and ceiling normally adorned with 100s of pump clip badges are currently bare. By far the best pub in the centre of Reading.
12 Mar 2012 19:07
Gaypostman , there is nothing wrong with a negative review if your experience of a pub has not been a good one, indeed on my last visit to the Wenlock the atmosphere coming from the other side of the bar was not great, the beer was reasonable, not great. But why keep slagging it off? If you dont like it dont keep going there, no need to continuously comment negatively.
"There are loads of great, old pubs in London." Why dont you tell us about them instead ? I agree with your only positive review to date , The Royal Oak, lets see more reviews in the positive.
10 Mar 2012 11:47
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
I agree with baxterfish, a pub you should have a look at once for the historic angle, but as stated the beer is rubbish, I made the mistake of going there twice.
29 Feb 2012 19:00
Not been here but to add to the previous two posts how about the Grapes in Wandsworth.
27 Feb 2012 21:07
The Craft Beer Co, City of London
Very lively saturday , good range of beers, I had a pint of Dark Star Golden Gate which was very good, will be back.
12 Feb 2012 11:56
The Pakenham Arms, Clerkenwell
A first visit to this pub and after a very cold ,sub zero walk from the wenlock arms it was a welcome sight.Had a pint of Twickenham Naked Ladies, very good. A choice of 11 or 12 beers, not a bad pub but far from the best of the day, would revisit if near but wouldn't go out of my way.
12 Feb 2012 11:52
Had a decent pint of cumbrian legendary dark stout ,still a good selection of beers available ,still grubby but i'm fine with that.I heard it will be sold and boarded up in April,we will have to wait and see if its true, could have been my last visit which would be a shame.
12 Feb 2012 11:43
A return visit after after a couple of years, nothing had changed which is a good thing. Nothing special but a good honest boozer. Shepherd Neame beers, all in good condition. As two years earlier the the landlord made a point of comming over to our table for a chat, a very likable geezer the only downside to the vist was he said that after being there 33 years he was thinking of chucking it in, that would be a great shame. Hope to visit again and hope the govnor's still there.
12 Feb 2012 11:33
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
Always been busy when I've been in here, today was no exception. The Brewers Gold was in very good shape.Excellent pub.
12 Feb 2012 11:20
Carpenters Arms, Bethnal Green
Quite busy on saturday lunchtime and very much open. A pub with a good buzz about it,situated on a back street between Brick Lane and Vallance road, its well worth seeking out. The Adnams Oyster Stout was excellent. A must vist pub when in the Bethnal Green area.
12 Feb 2012 11:14
First ever visit to this pub yesterday. Had hopeful expectations having read previous reviews. We were disappointed to find only one pump in order dispensing the nowdays very ordinary Doombar. The explanation was they are in the process of changing beer suppliers and have run their stocks down prior to change over, in the future they will be supplied by Coors, not sure if this is a good idea we will have to see. Dispite the beer shortage the pub itself did look promising basically laid out but rather charming for it ,we were the only customers in there ,12.30 lunchtime but I would imagine when full it would have a good atmosphere. Will try again.
12 Feb 2012 11:01
First pint of day on saturday morning,Dark Star Hophead in excellent condition as usual. This is the best time to come here if you want a quiet drink as it soon fills up and stays that way. A perfect start to a days pubbing, the only problem is dragging yourself away.
12 Feb 2012 10:34
Go to the top 10 pubs by county, click on London, this pubs rated number 4.
Its apparently been closed since 2008! Ridiculous.
14 Jan 2012 12:08
It will certainly need some massive changes to make this place even resemble a decent pub ,good luck to the new owner ,the area is crying out for a proper pub. I will have a look soon and see if I can improve my rating 3/10.
14 Jan 2012 10:01
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Plenty of intresting beers of late,at the moment a few from the new Sherfield Village Brewery, the jurys out on them at the moment, but the Green Bullet was promising. Also Dark star Hophead and the regular Courage Best and Gales H.S.B. the latter always in excellent condition straight from the cask,a quick turnover on the guests means theres usually something on for all tastes and proves their popularity.A small traditional pub, visit if you are in the area.
1 Jan 2012 11:53
Nice setting for a country pub, visited early Dec,not many punters in,beer was very ordinary and quite expensive, would'nt go out of my way to visit again.
1 Jan 2012 11:33
A very average pub with very average beer, wont be bothering to visit again in the near future.
1 Jan 2012 11:24
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
In addition to my last post the landlord/manager/staff we spoke to here and the Royal Oak in St James street, both under the same ownership were both very helpful in surgesting good pubs to visit in the area and info on pubs we planned to visit.Very refreshing and much appreciated.
17 Sep 2011 12:05
Best beer of the day by far,as we expected.Dark star Hophead and Sunburst plus Thornbridge Wild Swan were mindblowingly good. the pub itself is very good if not a bit studenty at times, you could easily spend the day here but would have trouble getting home afterwards.
17 Sep 2011 11:50
Very dissapointing after a good visit to the Great Eastern opposite, more hotel like than a pub,my pint of Hepworths Harvest was flat and uninspiring,at 3.50 a pint i would expect better,my mates pint of Pullman was in similar condition at 3.60. Wont be back.
17 Sep 2011 11:32
A cracking example of a town pub ,a little gloomy inside but that added to the atmosphere. I had a decent pint of otter ale served in a jug,the bluegrass music playing made it a little quirky but was alright by me. The pub was reasonably well attended and was my favorite pub of the day. A definate return visit is called for.
17 Sep 2011 11:20
A proper traditional locals pub,two bars one of which was showing cricket on a large screen. A sprinkling of people in and out on friday afternoon, the beer was decent, worth a visit.
17 Sep 2011 10:57
The Battle of Trafalgar, Brighton
A decent enough stop off after a steep walk up the hill, beers were ok tending to the usual suspects ,but ok. An ok pub nothing more nothing less.
17 Sep 2011 10:49
Now owned by the same people who own the Basketmakers, 8 handpumps with a fairly safe choice of ales Buttcombe ,Harveys ,Otter ,Hopback Summer Lightening, the others escape me at the moment, Iwould have liked to have seen a couple of less usual micros featured but my Harveys was fine.A fairly modern looking interior ,but walls and ceilings adorned with posters of rock and blues stars of yesteryear,Rolling Stones records playing quietly in the background and friendly bar staff made for a pleasant pint.
17 Sep 2011 10:29
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
A pretty good traditional pub,Fullers/Gales beers available plus guests,I had the York guzzler which was ok.I found the background music a bit tedious after a while simpley because jazz is not my cup of tea, that aside its a must visit pub when in Brighton.
17 Sep 2011 09:53
A good place to start a days pubbing,up to 14 ales available also a reasonable breakfast can be had. A pint of St Austell Tribute went down well followed by half a Jaipur IPA, Half? Well it was before midday. Recomended.
24 Jul 2011 13:31
Rammed as expected saturday afternoon and as good as ever.Hophead excellent.
24 Jul 2011 13:17
Just the the kind of pub I like a good selection of Ales available ,worth the trip up the Northcote road.A true drinkers pub, very good.
24 Jul 2011 13:15
Trafalgar Freehouse, South Wimbledon
A good little boozer with a nice feel about it, not as big a place as I was expecting but this is not a bad thing. I had a pint of Ascots Alligator Ale ,not the best of its type but not bad and very drinkable. Nice pub.
24 Jul 2011 13:06
The Nelson Arms, South Wimbledon/Colliers Wood
An excellent tiled exterior to the pub, something worth looking at,unfortunately thats the only positive thing i can say about it. Inside seemed rather souless and the only ale on offer was the rather bland London Pride . I wont plan to return.
24 Jul 2011 12:55
Excellent pub serving Hopback beers,I was hoping cropcircle would be available on hand pump but the choice was G.F.B ,Entire Stout and Summer Lightning, the stout was in very good form.I also tried Downtons Figaro Magnifico which wasnt to bad either.A pub well worth another visit.
24 Jul 2011 12:46
Was its usual efficient self, an easy drinking unpretentious pub with quality beer to be had. Having said that I did find the mild a tad cold but the flavour soon came through as it warmed. Good pub 8/10.
4 Jul 2011 22:55
A lively pub selling good bee? I must mean its got a good buzz about it.
29 Jun 2011 22:22
Always worth a visit if you're looking for something a little different beerwise, often on the stronger side of things. Not everyones cup of tea but I like it. Unfortunately it was pub number 8 of the day and I can't for the life of me remember what I had to drink but do remember it was good.
28 Jun 2011 23:55
Good lively pub serving good bee. St Austell Proper Job was in good form last Saturday. A worthy inclusion on a local pub crawl.
28 Jun 2011 23:28
Not really a destination for the ale enthusiast but an awesome selection of whisky available if thats your thing. Beers on were Bombardier and Flowers I.P.A. The Flowers was ok but not anything special. Worth a visit for the whisky menu.
28 Jun 2011 23:15
Really nice pub, second visit and a bit quieter this time due to the earlier hour, good looking pub from the outside and just as good inside. .My pint of youngs ordinary was as good as its likely to ever be since moving home. A spotlessly clean pub, a friendly landlord who obviously knows what he's talking about, all ingredients for a top pub.Borough 78 is obviously someone with a personal grudge or some kind of nutter. A must visit pub.
27 Jun 2011 21:55
Great little pub tucked away near Waterloo station, 8 handpumps 7 of which were on, I had to have a hophead as its just about the best beer there is in my view, very nice it was too.A real old traditional two bar boozer, as Arnie once said, I'll be back.
27 Jun 2011 21:27
Good as ever last Saturday,Hophead on good form as usual.Pub of the year?Pub of the decade in my book.
27 Jun 2011 21:06
A nice looking old traditional pub,it suffers though in my view from an unimaginative beer range, courage best, hogsback tea, London pride and G.k Abbot. That said my pint of tea was very well kept and very drinkable despite not being my one of my favourites. worth a visit if in Ripley.
4 Jun 2011 10:24
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
The introduction of an extra guest ale seems to be working well, todays guests were Hookey Bitter and B and T Black Dragon mild. Well worth a visit and a worthy runner up in north east Hampshire camras pub of the year.
15 May 2011 21:00
Called in early on sunday lunchtime, as mentioned before the Hop Blossom is a very good traditional pub tucked away from the main street giving it a relaxed feel. A few locals of varying age groups were present giving the bar a bit of life without being to lively. Six handpumps were all in use, this is a Fullers pub so most of their usual range was available, the one guest beer was Joseph Holt ipa.,this was my choice as Fullers isn't my favourite, it arrived in good condition and a full pint to boot, always a good sign. This pub is well worth seeking out if in Farnham
15 May 2011 20:39
Pretty decent pub with plenty of well kept beers to choose from.I'm not sure it as good as it's current number 4 position in the bite chart would suggest, but a good pub none the less. Would return when back in Winchester.
26 Mar 2011 20:53
The Bishop On The Bridge, Winchester
Pleasant enough pub next to the river, rather limited choice of beer being a Fullers pub,but the Seafarers was nice enough. A fairly large pub and very clean, I wouldn't go out of my way to return, but it served it's purpose for an early pint before the beer festival.
26 Mar 2011 20:29
Maltings tells us there are many pubs more deserving of the pub of the year award, if this is true they must be bloody good pubs. Maybe he/she will enligten us soon,as so far the Harp is the only pub Maltings has deemed worthy of comment on bite. All I know is that the Harp ticks every box and is well worthy.
15 Mar 2011 21:28
A restaurant with a bar, not a pub,Doombar and Directors available. Food was good and reasonably priced,I stuck to the wine so can't comment on the beer. I'm only interested in reviewing pubs from a drinking point of view, so nuff said.
27 Feb 2011 08:51
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Correction the previous review should read.
The H.S.B and Ruby Mild were served directly from the barrel.
Oops.
27 Feb 2011 08:24
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Now two guest ales available, good news for real ale fans.So yestedays offerings were Courage Best, Gales H.S.B. ,Rudgate Ruby mild and Thwaites Crowning Touch, the best and H.S.B. being ever present, the other two changing every barrel .The H.S.B.are served directly via the barrel.in
The Waggon serves food lunchtimes mon-sat but remains a traditional drinkers pub, a rare thing these days, certainly in this,an area awash with bland chain pubs and food orientated outlets. There are still some decent pubs of this type in the area if you have transport, the Anchor in Yateley, the Bell in Odiham and the Black Horse in Crookham Village to name three but the Waggon and Horses is the pick of the bunch in my opinion. Well worth a visit.
27 Feb 2011 08:13
I haven't visited the the cask on the last six months so have just had a look at the last few reviews.I was surprised to see my previous, positive reviews have disappeared along with my rating. Why this should be I'm not sure, so I shall reinstate my rating as per my last visit, and hope to revisit early this year and adjust if necessary, hopefully it will be as pleasant an experience as before.
2 Jan 2011 11:10
Good as ever Saturday, Dark star best and hophead and crouch vale brewers gold all in excellent condition, great pub.
25 Oct 2010 20:03
Lively pub, loud music, mostly full of twenty and thirty somethings early Saturday evening,I quite liked the place and would call in again when in the area.
25 Oct 2010 19:53
Good pub full of character, a bit pricey at a tenner for three pints but still well worth a trip.
25 Oct 2010 19:40
An ok pub, unfortunately only had sambrooks beers on yesterday which are not my favourites. But as pubs go it wasn't bad and would visit again
24 Oct 2010 11:49
Busy Saturday afternoon, horse racing on several tvs. No real ale I could see so I had half a fosters and left.
24 Oct 2010 10:08
Really good pub on the old ford road, the kind of place you wouldn't mind to have as your local. Decent shepherd neame beers and a friendly landlord
Excellent.
24 Oct 2010 10:01
Carpenters Arms, Bethnal Green
Nice place ,modern feel to it yet still a pub.Adnams Ghost Ship on and a Trumans beer brewed by Nethergate. Lively place well worth seeking out.
24 Oct 2010 09:24
The Pride of Spitalfields, Shoreditch
Excellent pub close to brick lane, busy for the Saturday lunchtime football match. Very good pint of Brewers gold ,everything a pub should be.Highly recommend.
24 Oct 2010 09:10
Decent looking pub inside, some interesting framed photos of old east London on the walls. The pub was empty at12.30 Saturday lunchtime but I don't think it had been open long. There were several empty handpumps but only two ales available, these were London pride and spitfire, I tried latter which was drinkable but no better than that. Its worth a look but I wouldn't go out of my way to revisit.
24 Oct 2010 08:58
The Porcupine, Leicester Square
Smallish pub next to the tube station, typical nicholsons interior and decent range of beer. Had the harvest pale which was ok but I had much better elsewhere later that evening .Not a bad pub but one for the tourists I feel.
25 Sep 2010 09:43
Great little pub in putney, visited the beer festival yesterday but was a little disappointed with the beers tried, only tested 7 or8 out of many but didn't find anything outstanding, down to personal taste I know but still a very good pub.
25 Sep 2010 09:21
Called ln twice yesterday either side of a visit to The beer festival at the bricllayers arms. Unsurprisingly perhaps the beer here was was better than any I tried in putney. Busy late afternoon but no trouble getting served the staff being as efficient as ever. Remains the best pub in London as recent awards testify.
25 Sep 2010 09:05
visited last month but forgot to post a review , probably because of the number of pubs visited that day. one of my favorite pubs in the area, friendly bar staff, decent beer, all in a good atmospheric setting.I much prefer this pub to the mitre in Hatton Garden going on recent experiences, well worth a visit.
18 Sep 2010 16:33
I have to agree with Henners about the Wandle but you can never have too much Dark Star. Top pub.
20 Aug 2010 23:01
A return visit last saturday. A very nice pub but the Brodies Amarilla while very flavoursom wars very flat. Shame.
16 Aug 2010 22:36
Not bad for a daytrippers pub, my pint of woodfordes norfolk nog was very good. Would revisit if nearby.
15 Aug 2010 21:13
The Bloomsbury Tavern, Bloomsbury
Decent albiet unremarkable shepherd neame pub, good beer pleasant feel but wouldnt go out of my way to visit
15 Aug 2010 20:49
Good looking pub inside and out, no particular problem with the service but the youngs ordinary was nowhere as good as the previous pint of the same sampled in the calthorpe arms earlier. A pub worth a look but the beer quality needs to improve.
15 Aug 2010 20:38
Decent traditional boozer, the Youngs ordinary was as good as i've tasted anywhere in the last few years. Definately worth a visit if in the area.
15 Aug 2010 09:36
The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane
Still worth a vist for a pint or two, charming pub but disintrested bar staff makes it not as welcoming as it once was. Dark Star's moon on the water was ok the other options were hophead and Adnams.
15 Aug 2010 09:16
Perfectly kept Hophead and American pale Ale this saturday, I can honestly say i've not tasted better anywhere. Best pub in London by far.
15 Aug 2010 08:28
Nice feel to the pub but alas in my last couple of visits the beer quality has been poor. Four hand pumps featuring the likes of Doom Bar,Ringwood 49er,Courage Best and Old Hookey recently. I applaud the idea of a choice of beer albeit the above selection not over adventurous, but four pumps is to many if your not shifting the quantity which i suspect to be the case. Of course i may have just been unlucky and caught end of barrels but three different beers over two visits all poor at best,i dont think so. If they sort the beer out this would be a good pub because everything else about it seems fine.
31 Jul 2010 07:23
Supurb Hophead lunchtime and equally good American Pale Ale upon my return. What a pub, never have to wait to be be served , excellent beer and friendly staff, what more do you want.
28 Jul 2010 23:03
Ive always liked this pub, always lively only let down slightly by the run of the mill offerings which on tuesday were london pride, doom bar and tt landlord , it is though well kept. Best pub in soho.
28 Jul 2010 22:40
Good little boozer, eight handpumps with the ony mainstream beer being youngs ordinary, so plenty of interest for the ale enthusiast. Will be back.
28 Jul 2010 22:27
Another attempt yesterday to try to get this pub to work for me but it just dosent. Not over impressed last time so wanted to try again. Just the old fella behind the bar trying his best but with four people waiting one side and another three in the saloon as well as juggling with some toasties he obviously needed some help. As my wait entered six mins plus i cut my losses and left.
28 Jul 2010 22:17
Very quiet tuesday afternoon didnt seem quite as good as i was expecting from previous reviews. Maybe when busier in the evening it has a bit more atmosphere. Will try again.
28 Jul 2010 21:54
Pub that does what it says on the tin. Honest no frills boozer selling a good range of decent ever changing beer. Had a pint of Hophead which wasnt quite as good as the same i had in the Harp earlier but i dont know any where that is. The wenlock remains always worth a visit.
28 Jul 2010 21:41
Regarding the ratings of the Harp,Ye Old Mitre and The Royal Oak and their subsequent chart positions as opposed to that of the Jolly Sailor in West Looe, as recently mentioned by Pat Bateman.Yes the three London pubs by nature of their location will have plenty of drinkers through their doors. 444 ,420 and 399 ratings respectivly many of these will not be from locals but people who travel miles to visit these excellent pubs , myself included particularly where the Harp is concerned. I'm sure there has been a few saddos down marking these pubs too but the sheer amount of positiveratings means this has little or no effect. The Jolly Sailor on the other hand achieved it's number 1status from only 35 ratings so when a couple of idiots downmark without leaving a review, indicating they've probably never been there, the slip from the charts is inevitable. It is however just as easy for a pub on so few ratings to rise up the table. This is not an attack on the Jolly Sailor i havent been there so cant comment, the point being the Harp,Mitre and Royal Oak are where they are on merit. p.s I hope this has'nt bored mr Foghorn to much.
25 Jul 2010 07:28
Started our day here and also ended it here on a very hot saturday. Unfortunately the 7or 8 pubs we visited inbetween came nowhere close to being half as good as the Harp. The beer is always in the best condition possible,in this case hophead. The service behind the bar is top notch.why cant other pubs be this good? By far the best pub in london.
12 Jul 2010 00:00
The Carpenters Arms, Marble Arch
A malor disappointment. I was really looking forward to seeking out this pub after reading the positive comments below. Two beers tried and both were undrinkable. Even worse when the first one was returned which had the appearance of mud in a glass, the barmaid held it up to look at she didnt seem to see what the problem was. So opting for somthing else ,this time the harveys wheat beer ,when it arrived it was so sour it would have done a good job cleaning someones oven. Needless to say it didnt get drunk and we didnt go down the third time lucky route. We left and are not likely to return anywhen soon.
11 Jul 2010 23:38
Rather plain small pub , average beer quality. About the only thing going for it was the cheerful barmaid.
11 Jul 2010 23:07
Intresting interior full of old photos of showbiz stars and royalty along with various bric a brac, old bottles ect. The Youngs special was fine, all in all a good boozer.
11 Jul 2010 22:58
One of the better pubs in a day of mostly average or worse pub visits. Nice and relaxing ,decent beerand friendly service. Worth a visit.
11 Jul 2010 20:52
Uninspiring pub, beer not in great shape. Will not be back.
11 Jul 2010 20:38
Probably the best pub in kentish town . Traditional victorian pub ,reasonable beer range although the bass wasnt at its best and the other beer sampled which i forget the name of, somthing dusk i think had good flavour but the temprature was luke warm. A pub i wouldnt mind returning to but given the quality or lack of it in the area i cant see me coming back soon.
11 Jul 2010 20:27
The Junction Tavern, Kentish Town
Visited saturday afternoon and tried a pint of Ringwood Boondogle,i must say i've had better,it was far to warm which seemed to be the case in most pubs visited yesterday. The pub itself was ok with one side for drinking the for eating, however i wouldnt go out of my way to visit again.
11 Jul 2010 20:03
The Southampton Arms, Gospel Oak
Decent no frills pub with a good selection of ales and ciders. Very quiet early saturday afternoon, just the three of us plus a couple of people in the pleasant courtyard garden at the rear of the pub. A few more people had arrived by the time we left ,i would imagine there would be a good atmosphere when busier.this pub has a good feel to and im sure i will return.
11 Jul 2010 19:35
Visited for the first time midweek early afternoon. Its a modern style foody estate pub. Quite large inside, the eating areas are nicely seperated from the drinking areas,so you dont feel your having a pint in a resturant. I was hoping for a more adventurous ale selection, the three advertised were fortyniner, spitfire and directors although the spitfire appeared to be off. I had the directors which was ok but i have had better. Much more impressive was the price at 2.90 , indeed all three were under 3.00. A smart very clean pub but really my kind of place but worth a passing pint, although i would probably keep going and have a pint in a traditional boozer, the Anchor just up the road.
30 Jun 2010 23:56
Good honest boozer, fine range of Harveys beers and the foods pretty good as well.Always worth a visit.
27 Jun 2010 07:37
Average pub with above average prices.Would'nt go out of my way to visit.
27 Jun 2010 07:09
Pleasant pub, low ceiling with ancient wooden beams , very cosy. Four ales on which is good to see, although all run of the mill. Courage Best, London Pride,Abbot and Hogs Back T.E.A. I had a pint of pride as the T.E.A. was just having a change of barrel. I'm not a massive fan of Pride finding it generaly rather bland, but this was well kept and the best i've tasted for sometime. A nice pub i wont hesitate to call in again.
19 May 2010 22:51
A bit better than most pubs nearby but not good enough to make a special trip.
16 May 2010 23:27
Called in sunday afternoon for the first time in many years. Tucked away down a pedestrian alleyway, at one time a narrow road, away from the traffic it has the feel of years gone by, especialy with the lack of any air traffic above due to the volcanic ash, just blue sky, very serene. There was only a couple of people inside,a few more enjoying the late afternoon sun outside. Its a traditional L shaped bar with bare wood floors, this runs into a conservatory type extension and then beyond that a seperate lounge room with leather clad sofas ect. Some pubs have no atmosphere, some need a few people to get it going, this place felt good although almost empty. A Fullers house (not a great fan) it had the full range although there didnt appear to have any Gales. I had a pint of chiswick which was ok. Their guest ale was their own London porter, of which i am a fan, so i had to treat myself to a half, it wasnt the very best ive had, if i was being over critical maybe a degree to cold, but good all the same. I like this pub and will revisit soon.
18 Apr 2010 21:54
Jack George Phillips, Godalming
Not a great fan of spoons pubs in general and this one dos'nt break the mould. Pretty busy as you would expect with the beer festival ale prices at 1.85. But average or worse quality beer combined with ordinary surroundings i would rather spend an extra pound or so and have a pint somewhere more pleasant.
13 Apr 2010 20:38
I agree with the last two posters, maybe a little frayed around the edges, but the beers good the customers are fine, its a boozer, if your looking for somthing a bit more sterile find a gastropub or drink in a plastic bubble.
7 Apr 2010 13:40
excellent pub only slightly let down by the limited beer choice(fullers) but well kept, the chiswick is very good. very small but if you visit early you will find some space. best pub in the immidiate area, highly recomended
7 Apr 2010 13:26
This pub as many will know has been shut now for well over a year, yet appears at #60 in the top 100 rated at 7.2. Meanwhile the new Wheatsheaf just around the corner in southwark street rated at 7.4 by 33 is nowhere to be seen. Crazy.
6 Apr 2010 22:53
Ben Crouch's Tavern, Fitzrovia
Is this place still closed as stated, if so why is it still featured in the top 100?
29 Mar 2010 08:52
The Porterhouse, Covent Garden
Visited for the first time on saturday, its got an intresting interior, i quite liked it, particularly upstairs. However i didnt enjoy the beer. The oyster stout was far to cold and had next to no flavour. I'm not likely to revist in the near future although i'm glad i had a look this time round.
29 Mar 2010 00:37
A pub i've been meaning to try for sometime but with the harp around the corner i've been distracted. Im glad i have now put that right. A delightful pub with a bit of a bar feel to it yet still definetly a pub, if that makes sense? Anway i liked it a lot. The hobgoblin i sampled was in fine form. The lemon tree will never compete with its famous neigbour but i will certainly pop in now and again.
29 Mar 2010 00:19
The Ship and Shovell, Charing Cross
Decent pub with a lively but comfortable atmosphere. Both bars were open and well attended. I had a pint of hopping hare which went down well. This pubs always worth a look.
28 Mar 2010 23:35
A short visit saturday on route to the ship and shovell. Had the odd looking stonehenge taste of spring, despite being green it actualy tasted quite nice. I was though rather dissapointed i didnt spot the excellent jaipur ipa tucked away around the corner till to late. Wouldnt go out of my way to come here but the beer was good so worth a pint if passing
28 Mar 2010 23:24
The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden
Nice little old pub hidden away down an alley between maiden lane and the strand. Beer selection was a bit ordinary but my deuchars was fine. Crystal palace v cardiff was on tv with the sound down, theres also a jukebox with a good selection, volume not to loud to intrude nice chatty barstaff. All in all a pleasant port of call. Will happily return.
28 Mar 2010 20:49
The Salisbury, Leicester Square
Called in early saturday afternoon. Good looking pub interior, chose a pint of tribute, service was quick as it wasnt to busy. There is a sign behind the bar saying if you feel the head on your beer is to large we will happily top it up. We'd orderd 6pints they all needed topping up. It was nothing to do with large heads they were short measures, they were happily topped up. I just wonder how many people dont ask. The beer itself was ok apart from being far to cold. This pubs ok for a pint if your into interiors, if its for a drink experience i personaly would'nt bother again
28 Mar 2010 20:27
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
Terrific drinkers pub steeped in history. One of the best in covent garden. Busy at midday on saturday as befits a good pub. Beers were youngs ordinary and special, harveys best and bombadier. I had a pint of ordinary which is getting back to how it was before the wells takeover but still has a way to go. A great pub always worth a pint or two.
28 Mar 2010 11:30
Payed a first visit yesterday, and a first taste of brodies amarilla. I liked both. A very dimley lit inside but this adds an interesting feel to the place. It was fairly busy without being crowded early afternoon. Nice pub, will return.
28 Mar 2010 11:10
The Marquess of Anglesey, Covent Garden
Modern rather souless interior, tried a youngs gold. Didnt enjoy the pub or the beer. Wont be back.
28 Mar 2010 10:11
With out a doubt the best pub in london. Never fails to please. Two visits yesterday as ever fantastic beer (choice of 8), fantastic (but dangerous if not treated with care) cider and perry. And always good service from people who know their beer no matter how busy it gets. The only pub i rate 10/10. Dont miss out pay a visit.
28 Mar 2010 09:49
Noticed this pub has had no reviews to date, i hav'nt been in recently but my memorys of this pub from a visit a year and a half ago were of a decent no frills boozer. The landlord wasnt planing to open till 12 on a saturday lunchtime but let us in and was happy to serve us when we turned up about 11.20. I had a couple of pints of whitstable bay which were fine, the landlord joined us for a chat saying he had been there 30 years or so and that times were not so easy nowadays as any of his old customers died or moved on were not being replaced because the local residents tended to be imigrants where the pub is not part of their culture. It was a good start to our day as we said our goodbyes and headed of on a pub trip around the islington area. A nice pub , nothing extravagant but the sort of place you wouldnt mind as a local if you lived around the corner. I hope its surviving and still the same, i'll have a look next time i'm near.
27 Mar 2010 00:34
Nice to have some T.T beers other than landlord which is everywhere, the ram tam is particulary good. Top pub.
25 Mar 2010 23:07
The Seven Stars, Chancery Lane
Great pub, slightly off the wall but all the more intresting for it. You can feel the history as you walk in. Beers are good often dark star available, well worth a visit.
25 Mar 2010 22:57
Called in last tuesday to watch the football. It's a fairly large pub with plenty of bar space as well as ample seating.Four ales on,london pride, landlord, pedigree and hogs back spring ale.I started with the latter but found it not to be in the best condition so moved on to the pride, this was in better shape although it's not a particular favorite of mine. Whilst it's nice to see four pumps available i would prefer to see a more adventurous choice. Prices are very reasonable for the area, 2.68 if i remember correctly. Not a bad pub for a couple of pints, about the best on offer in fleet, but i probably wouldnt stay for a long session.
21 Mar 2010 00:58
It's quite odd how the vast majority off positive reviews this year have been from users who have only ever made one post. This must be a good pub. Must'nt it?
18 Mar 2010 23:32
Traditional locals pub, nice atmosphere, well kept butcome bitter and courage best, worth avisit
13 Mar 2010 07:40
Decent beer selection but variable quality. I suppose you get what you pay for, i'd sooner not bother. Poor service , luke warm food you need to be desperate to use this place. A poor pub in a poor town for pubs
5 Feb 2010 07:48
A pub with a big reputation for food and beer. 7 beers on when i paid a weekday lunchtime visit, these were pride, fortyniner, TT landlord , hogsback tea, exmoor gold, fff moondance and bowmans swift one. I had the latter which was in great shape. I didnt try the food so cant comment. There was only two other customers there while i was present so a little dificult to judge the atmosphere of the place, its a pretty basic two room pub interior with quite a lot of tables and chairs surrounding the bar area for eating purposes which take away from the pubiness of the place for me. That said its well worth a visit for the beers alone.
26 Jan 2010 23:32
Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street
Historic pub , great interior, cheap beer and unfortunatly rubbish beer . I just dont get sam smiths with such a limited choice i wont be hurrying back
24 Jan 2010 20:09
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Cracking pint of harrier from the cottage brewery this weekend. It certainly got the ex milkman buzzing. There have been some pretty decent guest ales on of late,im looking forward to some more in the future.
24 Jan 2010 19:52
Called in last month, as bars go not bad at all. It was very busy even at 11.30 in the morning . The dark star porter was in fine form. I will return in the summer and try couple in the outside seating area it looks like it could be quite relaxing, room permiting. Well worth a visit.
13 Jan 2010 12:47
Visited on the wednesday before new year . Got off to a bad start arriving just after 11 to find out it wasnt opening till 12. Once inside i started with a mild if i remember correctly by artbrew. One of my companions had the same the other had a golden bitter i cant rember which. None of us were happy with our choice which is very unusual in the wenlock, but the beers were new to us and i supose you cant like everything. The idea of the days trip was to have two or three pints in three or four of our favorite pubs as opposed to our normal one pint in eight or nine pubs on our regular london pub walks. But looking at the remaining ales available , mostly christmas specials as well as the fact we got started an hour late we decide to move on a little bit disapointed as the wenlock has been and still is one of my top five pubs in london. hopefuly this was a minor blip ill return soon.
7 Jan 2010 23:38
First visit for a year, same old problem, stand at the bar to be served and you become invisible , when you reappear another three or four customers have appeared and the barstaff {usually only one} have no idea whos first or last. Its a family friendly pub, great for familys not always for others. The two ales on were Black Sheep bitter and Courage Directors i went for the latter which was in suprisingly good form given previous memories of beer quality, i did have to ask for it to be topped up though. Food looked ok beer was good but i wont hurry back as the service does my head in.
7 Jan 2010 22:03
Visited this pub a while ago with three mates as part of a crawl. Awful place, two bar staff failed to spot the four of us stood at the entrance end of the bar whilst they happily chatted at the far end. we finaly attracted some attention after they managed to serve two seperate people who turned up after us but happend to be nearer to said bar staff. We ordered four pints i went for the tt landlord . Not one turned up anywhere near a full pint , in the worst case there was two inches froth and the inside top inch of the glass was completley dry where no liquid had touched the glass at all. The student type on the other side of the bar failed to spot this while happily taking our money. After the obvious was pointed out to him and a strange blank look in our direction he did his best. The beer was average at best , we drank up and left never to darken the paxtons heads door again.
7 Jan 2010 00:33
A well regarded pub, but its not for me.I feels more like a hotel lounge bar not the sort of place i would like to linger. The beers are from fullers nothing too exciting. The highlight of the visit was the toilets, probably the poshest ive seen in a pub. I wont be hurrying back
6 Jan 2010 23:34
Excellent little mews pub, lots of curios/bricabrac on shelves and scatterd about. The beer is adnams ,not my favorite but ok. I would be quite happy to spend an afternoons drinking here apart from the limited beer choice.I will certainly pay another visit soon.
6 Jan 2010 23:06
The Exchequer, Crookham Village
Called in to have a look lunchtime. Not the sort of place i would go to just for a few beers ,to gastro for my taste. ideal though for a family pub lunch .Nice to see the ales availabe all dispensed straight from the barrel, today these were . Andwells gold muddler, Hogs back advent ale and fullers london pride. I went for the advent which was pretty good. Didnt try the food so cant comment . I wont visit often as its not my kind of pub, but the beers good and may try it for a meal sometime
5 Jan 2010 22:58
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
Visiting this pub regularly as i do i can report this is a good proper boozer. However i have tn say ive been disappointed not to spot any neon clad trollops the surley south african was smiling and although there might be a couple of porkers who use the pub theyre not going to bite you. So dont get all shook up elvisale1 Just enjoy a good pub if you ever return. This is one the best pubs in the south the courage best is an ok standard session beer the gales HSB is excellent and the ever changing guest beer gives extra sometimes intresting choice with the likes of hopback and dark star beers but sometimes predictable ales such as london pride and tea which are ok but widely availably in the area but thats just my opinion its not all about my taste buds .all in all a top pub visit it.
5 Jan 2010 13:12
Simply cant fault this pub choice of 8 ales not all run of the mill but all in top condition. This is my usual meeting place for regular london pub walks and quite often end up here as its only a 15 min walk to waterloo station most of all its a real pub well done binnie sarah and all the staff keep up the good work
5 Jan 2010 12:12
The Waggon and Horses, Hartley Wintney
I'll second that.
