Looked like the regular brew was Doom Bar - needless to say I left that alone. The guest beers however were worth trying: Wild Weather from Stormbringer and Gold Muddler brewed by Andwell. Large area for eating. Food towards the higher price range but cooked well and tasty. fugglehops - 27 Oct 2013 22:12 |
Now much improved on the beer front,Darkstar beers regularly feature, usual suspects are the house beers,Courage Best and Doom Bar, but the quality is good and consistant, other guests are available.Because of its location it will always be a food driven pub rather than a boozer but its good to see the efforts are made to keep the beer to a high standard and as such is worth dropping by for a pint. Stopped here for dinner on our way home from Devon. Nice pub on main road beside a small river (hreat for summer afternoons). Real fire which always goes down well with me. Beer was great. Had a really nice brew from Darkstar called "Expresso", sounds disgusting but actually a very nice dark beer. Food was very good. Proper home cooked. I would say it was slightly expensive as all starters were over 5 and most mains over 11. Would definately go back if I was in the area again. rwjc22 - 10 May 2012 23:57 |
On a six mile circular walk from Winchfield station we decide to take lunch and alcohol at the Crooked Billet. Whereas once the A30 was the premier route in the area it's now more like an overspecified backroad, kind of like how I imagine Route 66 in the USA to be. Consequently the Crooked Billet doesn't get the passing trade that it used to, but ambience wise is probably all the better for it. The pub was packed - the pensioners wing of the local Baptist Church were having their Christmas lunch, so the sherry was flowing and the zimmers were flying. We settled down a safe distance away to enjoy some splendid pints of TEA. Also available was Courage Best, Doom Bar and Boondoggle ( a bit late in the year for summer ale, but never mind). Service was pretty good considering the OAP's had monopolised most of the waitresses. I had Shepherd's Pie with vegetables and it was fine - no "chips with everything" here. The staff welcomed us and said goodbye. All in all a very pleasant experience ramblethenlunch - 16 Dec 2011 16:45 |
