Visited here on a Saturday afternoon, pub 'well, I say pub. I don't actually know what it is and I don't think the landlord does either'. Some kids running about and jumping up and down, lots of Jemima's and Jeremy's with buggies, ordering the whole menu = a long wait for a beer from the one barmaid. Lots of shitty old 'memorabilia' on the wall - meant to look vintage but ends up looking pretentious like a brighton pub. Went over the road after one pint, I'm not a tourist so we left. Not impressed by thai food in an english pub - WTF is that all about?
Nice and quirky but also more expensive than the other locals. Saturday afternoons tend to see an influx of 30-something parents and their "little treasures". Yet to try the food but it smells very nice (Thai menu)
Yeah so me an some of my Chums were celebrsting my recent Nobel prize win in here, when someone dropped a new order LP (1983, limited edition) The staff, all of them were happy to retrieve it an poppped in anOlympic gold medal ta boot. Nice. Weightlifting Moscow1980, for the curious. Which was nice. Just the lttle touches you know. Thst separate the best from the rest
Sunday afternoons always tended to be a time for mothers and toddlers, but in former days there was a lot more room for the buggies!
On 10/07/12, Fridge posted "My initial impression is that the establishment has been changed from a drinkers pub to a meeting place for the young, trendy "yummy Mummys". Let's hope I'm wrong.". I am sad to report that Fridge was absolutely right and on Sunday afternoons at least The stand Up is now a crèche with a bar in the middle.
That said, it is a very popular crèche with a bar in the middle even well after peak lunch time despite the expensive ale. The plus points are that the variety of ale is good and in my experience well kept. I particularly enjoyed the Arundel Queen's Park.
The Thai food on offer is very good and in my opinion, reasonably priced, but there is only Thai food so if you don't like Thai food or just hoped for more traditional fare, you will be disappointed.
This could be a really nice place to be but at certain times it is most definitely a place to avoid unless you want your toes run over by baby buggies and to listen to a chorus of screaming kids.
In short it has been wrecked. Destroyed. Vandalised. A pub I used to cycle 15 miles to visit is not now worth crossing the street for.
I suppose, if you were unaware of this pub's previous, Dark Star, incarnation, you might turn up and think that this is a good, relaxed, welcoming pub with a fine selection of ales. To the rest of us, who knew and loved the 'old' Stand Up, what has happened here can only be described as tragic. It's very hard to explain what's lacking here but the renovation has completely expunged the spirit of the place. There is a dazzling array of pumps at the bar but the first one I chose was off (just happened at that moment apparently) and the second one tasted like it was going off. It cost 3.80 for a pint of ale which is basically theft. In a way, this place has turned into the antithesis of the Dark Star original - the way it looks is now more important than what it delivers. I won't be going back in a hurry.
This used to be a smashing little pub, a real community hub with live music and great beer. Dark Star beer to be precise. And then some kind person decided to stop all that, to discontinue Dark Star's presence, to reorganise the bar, and change the beers, stick a load of meaningless kitsch up on the walls to 'provide character' etc. The result? It isn't a bad place as these things go, but the beer is on the whole undistinguished, the drinks cost about 1 each more than at other Lindfield watering holes, the Thai food ain't bad if you don't mind sitting at a tiny round table to eat it. The place has been made bland and expensive, the clientle has gone from being a true cross-section to mostly the bourgeois young, there's no live music any more, the atmosphere has been ruined. Very sad.
Paid 5.85 for a pint and a half of Biddenden cider at the Brewer's Arms Lewes, and the same for pint and a half of Black Dragon Cider at the Snowdrop Lewes.
So why does a pint and a half of good cider at the Standup cost 6.60?
Shockingly expensive and no longer like a proper village pub. 3 ciders on at our visit. Only Thai food available. We'll be popping into Grape & Grain in Haywards Heath for local cider at 2 pt and drinking at home. I'll have to get the recipe book out and make some scotch eggs...
One day a flying saucer took off from Brighton and landed in the middle of a West Sussex village called Lindfield. What is this the locals asked, what is this the bar staff wondered as the Flying saucer landed right in the middle of a plot that was called the stand up inn. Lets stick a load of tat all over the walls from the junk shop and photo copy a load of old pictures and stick them over the wall, that should please the village folk. We will have seven real ale pumps but just have three on the go. We will charge town prices to because we have never been here before. It's early days, the Ale is very good (well the pipes are new) but expensive and I do like the place but i am wondering will I like it a few months down the road. The referb is allright but you would have thought that something could have been done about the Gents toilets because they are very small (and they still leak) and not very nice considering they will soon be serving Thai food (oh no). It is nice and lets see what it's like a few months down the line. The Ale is good quality but expensive and a nice atmosphere but I feel it could go in a couple of directions. The Jury is out and if this review is confused I'm sorry because I'm not too sure myself and feel it could settle to be really good or bad and I say that because it does feel like a square peg in a round hole. Time will tell.
It's open (but now only from midday). The bar is now in the centre of the main room, the decor is now very much "Corporate Image" rather than individually quirky and a nasty trip hazard has been exposed after taking down a small protective balustrade. It looks as if the bar is too near the fireplace for a fire to be safely lit in winter, which, given that two of the radiators have been removed, isn't going to make it any warmer. There are now 7 real ale pumps, but only 3 beers were actually on when I called. The only ciders available are Addlestones and Stowford Press. No Perry. Prices have increased more than considerably-4.35 for a pint of Addlestones, as opposed to 3.30 for Weston's Old Rosie in the old pub. Guinness is now available at 4.15 a pint and there are enough lagers available to cater for any amount of lack of taste! The pub now has three doors which seem to be haphazardly open at the landlords inclination-one of these has a high step which makes it unsuitable for people with mobility problems and the other newly available door has a huge gap at the bottom-good in Summer, not so good in Winter. Food (Thai) will not be available for about a fortnight. My initial impression is that the establishment has been changed from a drinkers pub to a meeting place for the young, trendy "yummy Mummys". Let's hope I'm wrong.
OK. I was wrong. The word is that it will open at 1900hrs. Contraindications are that the workmen are still there, on the other hand the windows are being cleaned!
I thought the July 5 opening date was a bit optimistic. Shopfitters, etc. still all over the place.
Possible good news. Pub is scheduled to reopen 5 July, although the shopfitters had better get a move on. Still selling real ales and ciders, and branching out into Thai cuisine. I'm not sure that this is going to work out as another of the village pubs tried it a couple of years ago. It didn't last long. New management will have to work hard, but I wish them well.
Noooooooooooooo ! Such very sad news ! One of my favourite pubs although I will say I always seemed to arrive just after a sought after beer finished. I have such fond memories of this place and spectacular ales even though I've only been a few times. BUGG'RIT !!!! I'm now wearing a black arm band, RIP Standup and thank you so much.
Hmmmmm....sign in the window says "Closed for re-furbishment"
So very sorry to hear that the Stand Up has closed. 4 generations of our family have loved this pub starting with C's granny Lil who was in the darts team in the 1940s. A great blow to the community. Lets hope the premises doesn't re-open as some twee little shop - there are more than enough of those in the village.
stan dupInn believe me, there's nothing more important to us than the team - without them there would be no brewery, no pubs etc and if there is a 'brand' it's nothing without a bunch of passionate people in the team and loyal followers that share your ethos - ours remains brewing beer we like to drink. I'm stating the obvious here, but I guess we're all feeling it right now. Maybe we're better brewers then pub owners, maybe we're not hard nosed enough for that game, but we'll keep working hard on our other pubs and you never know what's around the corner. If the Stand Up taught us one thing it's that the pub is at the every heart of a community, part of its very fabric and to see it go is a great shame to say the least. Not sure what you've heard as to who'll be replacing us, but I hope they'll breathe new life into the place - Sunday night was truly something special. If anyone else has any questions, heard anything other then the news that we were given notice to leave within seven days, I'm happy to chat directly. James 01403 713085 - nothing to hide other than our disappointment.
James, I wasn't apportioning any blame to anyone. I'm merely saddened by the news and hopeful that Dark Star are looking after their employees and not just their brand. There's no doubt that the brewery have done great things for that pub, but you need to remember that it works both ways. You may well have a shiny new 'brewery tap' in Partridge Green, and the untouchable Evening Star, but the Stand Up was a way of life and it was home to people. Look after them. Please.
Stan dupinn I have to correct you. The lease had been under negotiation for some time then, out of the blue, notice was served (6 days) everyone to a man and woman at Dark Star was, and remains devastated by this. There's no hard feelings on the decision not to grant us the lease, but the short notice period put Lou and Jo and their team in an awful position. I'd take time to ask them how the brewery looked after them - you may be surprised. For the record, The Stand Up was part of our family and we're gutted. But now isn't a time to look for blame and pick apart the detail in lease agreements. Notice was served on us and we have to support the team best we can - that I can promise we are doing all we can. I don't wish to get into an exchange, simply present the facts. We hope you get the pub the village and regulars deserve.
This is such sad news and my heart goes out to Jo, Lou, all the staff and all the regulars. Hopefully the owner will see sense and keep it running as the best pub for miles, as it has been for years - the heartbeat of the village. It would appear that Dark Star have finally become too big for their boots. They owe so much to the Stand Up for bringing their brand to the people of Mid Sussex, and I hope they have, at the very least, done the decent thing and given severance pay to the staff and managers.
Sadly, this lovely pub will close tomorrow evening. It's future is unknown. This has been brought about by the inability of the brewery and the premises owner to come to an agreement on the terms of a new lease. As a result, with only four days notice, the village has lost its best pub, the two managers are homeless and a total of ten people have lost their jobs. Additionally, of course, a considerable number of vilagers and others from the area have lost their social centre and a large number of local bands have lost a regular venue. Gentlemen, I hope you are pleased with what you have achieved!
Thirstybob, I'll have you know that we invented "quirky" in Lindfield. You only had to look around you and see the other lunchtime customers! As for the Dark Star specials, they usually last about four hours on the pumps so you have to be quick. Never mind about the ham,egg and chips-it's bad for you. Stick to Lou's home made pasties and chili Scotch eggs. Yum!
Popped in for a quick spot of lunch. Interesting cheap and very tasty menu - plenty of choice under 6 (amazing). Beers and ciders were great. Right by the bus stop. Service was friendly. My only disappointment (compared with the Partridge or the Evening Star ) not enough quirky Dark Star specials, and no ham egg and chips ;-)
A pint of Old Rosie cider each here and a homemade scotch egg (one traditional & one chilli) & salad were the perfect antidote to the bland corporate pub in Haywards Heath that we had just been to.
Someone said 'everything a pub should be' and I'll second that......good beer, pretty village location, courteous staff - and it's even got bar billiards.
A spectacular array of real ales, so well worth a visit just for that. It has a 'bar' type atmosphere rather than a country pub, so would certainly appeal to the younger generation. Visited after a recent cricket match and would certainly use it again when I'm in Lindfield.
I forgot to mention the water dish put out for any visiting dogs, which I always think is a good sign in a pub.
It gives me great pleasure to be able to contradict professionalpubcritic and thereby knock his bafflingly negative review off the 1st page. The Stand Up Inn is a lovely pub, with excellent beer and friendly staff. We got off the bus to Haywards Heath early after a day out at Wakehurst Place just to go to this pub and I'm very glad we did. There were 3 Dark Star beers plus guests, 2 ciders and a perry, all on handpump, and the 3 we tried were on good form (also a home-made Scotch egg, which was delicious). I liked the simple, comfortable decor (there is a pretty mural of Lindfield by the window where we sat). Best of all there was no music so we could chat or read the newspapers provided in peace and quiet.
I thought I would check professionalpubcritic's other reviews, just so I could avoid the pubs he liked, but, funnily enough, he hasn't written any. Isn't that suspicious for someone who calls himself 'professional'?
I have to agree with village_drinker, fridge, and spectrumisgreen. "professionalpubcritic" (??!!) is clearly a horrible person in general, not to say a bit of a moron ! The Stand Up may not be the cleanest or freshest smelling public house in the county, but the staff do a damn fine job of selling it's excellent beer and cider. If you want a nice shiny perfumed bar than naff off to Orange Square !
I will also have to say that both the managers have put in such an effort over Christmas. It was a very sad loss of a of a much liked member of staff and the village community who was not just a colleague but a close dear and friend of the managers of the Stand Up Inn.
Through out the festive season I have seen many new faces in the Stand Up whom have also found the place to be worm and welcoming. As a result they are paying more frequent visits and joining in with the friendly lively conversation of the other frequenters of the pub.
As ever the product that is served is always maintained to the highest standards. With the Dark Star Hop Head and the Partridge (Dark Star Best) many a persons favourite, plus the extensive enjoyable range of guest ails that are on offer for the customer new and old to enjoy. Plus a diverse range of enjoyable Ciders and Perrys
The managers also work hard to ensure that Stand Up contributes to the local community entertainment with the live music on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. Also there is the fortnightly Monday quiz with Pamela.
I would also have to mention the team that the managers of the Stand Up Employ. As them selves are equally committed to the quality of the product and service but also committed to the community spirit of the village, always a pleasure to speak to and bring a smile.
The Stand Up Inn Linfield is a credit to the Dark Star name.
Well said, spectrumisgreen. You might have added that the two managers were both ill over the Christmas period but still working longer hours to cover for the loss of staff. Of course, anyone can have a bad experience in any establishment but as someone who drinks there five days out of seven I can tell you that i am more than content to go on doing so.
I feel the need to defend this pub from the last review. I'm sorry that you did not enjoy the stand up professionalpubcritic. I see you posted your review Jan 1st. It has been a very tough time for the staff and customers of the stand up inn because we lost a very dear friend who worked behind the bar just before Christmas that did have a shockwave with the stafff and customers of the pub. I am a customer myself and felt very sad and I don't know how the staff managed to keep going, they were all in shock as we all were (are).
I go to this pub because it cares about beer, not the food or anything else having said that the pasties that they do look very tempting but I go there for the good high quality beer at a good price. Served by staff who care about what they do and will always let you sample a beer to see if you like it. I have done a review for this pub before and my views have not changed. The best compliment I can give to this pub is that I travel by train and walk two miles on a regular basis to get served a great pint of beer by staff who I have always found friendly and helpfull. I have also noticed in my time of going there that if there is something wrong, they will put it right fast. That is the kind of service that will make me return time and time again. This is a very popular pub which confirms I'm not alone with my veiws. I would say if all pubs were run like The Stand Up, less would go out of buisness. I wish there were more pubs like this one. An example to all.
Absolutely AWFUL staff, no atmosphere, this pub needs new management...FAST if it wants to regain its popularity! Run by a couple of misserable common ladies who look rather unfit to me!. Also, the Toilets smell rather foul and cushions on chairs and curtains are rather grubby. In need of a complete overhaul/makeover. Or better still turned into a "proper" Pub with proper decent staff/management!
still doing what it does so well very well indeed
Great place full of character (as opposed to "characters", thankfully), and plenty of cider options.
There are pubs you would never return to, pubs that are OK and pubs that you would be delighted to have as your local. The Stand Up is one of the latter and seems to have a healthy number of customers right through the day and evening....
A Real Pub! We love this place, it attracts loads of different people from loads of different backgrounds... what a real pub should be. The pub, amazingly, for a tied pub (Dark Star), supports different micro breweries and varied cider/perry producers as well. The thing here is that Dark Star are a great brewery and they believe in choice and all their pubs (all three of them) will sell whatever drinkers actually want... choice. We will always make an effort to visit this place.... brilliant!
Perhaps our dear friend Slerpy should stick to the "delights" of Croydon pubs...........
Slerpy, you're at it again. I have used this pub many times and found it to be superb. Don't you see a common theme here......has it occurred to you that you seem to spend your life antagonising bar staff or making rude comments about them and that's why you so often get on the wrong side of the staff? If you carry on like this you will get thrown out of every pub you visit.
Gosh. What a lot of froth and tattle on this site! This is a nice clean pub with friendly staff and a good selection of well-kept ales. Nothing at all wrong with the place to my rheumy old eyes. Seems that "slerpy", et all, are in some need of a collective lobotomy (or at least good lie-down in a dark room). Get a life codgers.
Oooooooooo it does turn an old dear on when young men get angry!! Could one of you strapping youngsters tell me off for being a naughty girl!!
Jetta - 27 May 2010 17:51 |
I cannot think of a more convivial pub. On my first visit whilst passing through through with a suitcase - nothing marks one out as being different, as not being local - I was welcomed into conversation at the bar with locals of all ages. Even the very friendly barmaid plugged my phone charger in behind the bar. Clearly slerpy is an odd fellow. The Stand Up Inn is everything a pub should be. The beer is immaculately kept and the non-Dark Star guests interesting and thoughtfully chosen. The atmosphere is laid back, whilst not descending into the unhealthy state of pandering to profanity and giving licence to the lager-swilling hordes to do their things which must be unspoken.
Oh dear. It would appear that Slerpy has slerped too many....!! Really, over 2 months and you come back with that crap - get a life. Oh, and by the way, it's not my pub, i just care a great deal about it. Also, customeris is not a word, and trade is pretty damn fantastic actually. I'd love you to come back down and make yourself known "Slerpy" - I'm sure we could have a wonderful conversation, followed by me throwing you out on your arse.
STAN DUPINN has commented on just ONE pub his own!!! I travel widely and review many pubs with honesty. The staff are very rude and this is NOT a pub worthy of a return visit.Being rude to beer drinkers is his way of running a pub, it speaks volumes! Childish outbursts do not help trade, repeat several times a day,it might help you realise that you are the unimportant part of your establishment, the customeris are the important part.
Attacking the staff would involve you having to move from your stool....
Jetta-steady,gal! I should give up the tea and take to the Old Rosie if I were you. As to the fantasies produced by the non-alcoholic bevvy, the tall young man benefits far more, and far more deservedly, from having his buttocks kicked hard rather than fondled and your bosom would come to less harm if you gave it a stiff rub down with a wire brush rather than getting entangled with bearded men at the bar!! Keep taking the chocolate.
I popped in this lovely little refreshment room with my dear friends Dorris and Mable, not being very partial to drink (apart from perhaps a cheeky G&T on her majesty's birthday) we were pleasantly surprised by the options of tea or coffee.
We sat in a lovely little section right, in the window where we could watch the world go by and spy what the neighbours had in their shopping bags. We had the most delicious tea you have ever tasted all topped off with a cute little complementarity choccie on the saucer all delivered by the most tall, slim handsome young man, if I was forty years younger I'd have pinched his rump! More realistically, there is a very handsome older man with the most attractive dark beard whom sits at the end of the bar most days, I often now when I pass the pub stare longingly through the window and wish that I could feel his beard brushing across my bosom...

I didn't have any drinks before arriving at your pub. I was expecting wooden flooring as described by Slerpy just 2 weeks before my visit.
Instead I was disappointed to find carpeting that ruins the feel of the pub and cheap laminate flooring in the dining room section.
I must say mate, you have a strange idea about how to advertise your pub. i.e have a go at the customers on BITE.
Think I'll change the high rating I had awarded to The Stand Up, before your little outburst.
Not entirely sure where Pat or Slerpy were, or how many ales they had sampled before entering The Stand Up, but the place has not been carpeted wall-to-wall since Slerpy's visit. The carpet in the main area of the pub has been in place for several years, and the 'Lloyds Room' still has a wooden floor. Also, in response to Slerpy's comments about the staff, yes, it was a particularly busy day, and yes there was not a lot of room (not the biggest of pubs), however if you continually choose to blissfully ignore people who politely ask for you to please move as they're carrying plates of hot food, then yes, after a while they may turn slightly brusque. This does not mean that the staff are "above their station". Unfortunately certain ale and cider connoisseurs tend to have problems with their hearing ! This is a glorious village pub, which is being managed extremely well with the backing of Dark Star Brewing and a fantastic team behind the bar.
Nice to find a pub with a large choice of Ciders. Black Rat and Thatchers were both very nice. They also serve Belgian bottled beers, so I was simply forced to test a couple of bottles of Zot ... lovely stuff.
Our dog received a lot of attention from the friendly Bar Staff and locals.
The only dissappointment, was that since "Slepry's" comments on 6 March 2010, the bare wooden floorboards have been totally covered by wall to wall carpeting. Which is a bit of a pub crime really.
Still well worth a visit.
Unbelievably BITE is telling me I have made no comment or rating of the splendid Stand Up. I find this staggering as I've been coming to sample its many wares on and off for over a decade, but there it is. I suspect that many users have already made the necessary points about both the wonderful range and quality of cask ales, and the rustic great value cooking. And all served with a smile and in a pleasant environment that manages to successfully straddle tradition with contemporary. Dark Star are enlightened enough to feature a selection of 3 or 4 of their own offerings at the pumps, along with around 3 guests. There is also a bank of pumps dedicated to cider and perry (2 of the former and 1 of the latter on my last visit). All samples imbibed last week were on cracking form and this is consistent with earlier visits. The range of dishes on the menu is not broad. But what there is is cooked very well, using quality ingredients. My beef stew was a delight; beef evidently casseroled for a while as it was tender, and bags of flavour - a little heavy on the sage perhaps but that was a minor criticism. I can also recommend the deceptively-filling pasties - we all like a little pork 'n' cider now and then - especially for 2.50! Historically, this has always been a good boozer - as the Linden Tree with the 90-year-old bird pulling the pints (never knew whether the creaking sound was the pump or her arm!) it was reliable, and in the 19th century it boasted its own brewery (Durrant's). But Dark Star have really brought it to life without ruining the interior and what made it successful in days gone by. Well done folks, and I hope to be back whenever opportunity permits.
A wonderful pub situated very near the large duck pond in one of the south east's nicest villages. the pub resembles a dickensian shop. On entering it has bare wooden board flooring, the bar has an array of Dark Star ales plus several guest ales and three ciders, all of which are in tip top condition. If i have to quibble ( you know I will) the pub was REALLY busy two functions, the one I was part of and another. Due to the congestion the staff got a bit above their station rather brusquely telling drinkers to mind out of the way etc. This is a fine pub but a lesson in common courtesy would not go amiss!
called in for the first time, post daisy. once again cannot fault the ale, but definatly a change in atmosphere in pub. perhaps i just picked the wrong night to go in. will visit soon tho, beer fest at end of feb.
This is one gem of a pub. It has choice and quality as well as a good atmosphere. This is a Dark star pub so you know that you will get a quality pint. I have been here often and I have never had a bad pint of Hophead which speaks volumes. They have Dark Star best and other seasonal Dark Star beers but they have guest beers too as well as a choice of three ciders, Largers and Murphys. It has a small bar which can sometimes be hard to get to if there many people. A very nice pub and well worth a visit.
Crazy Daisy has finally gone. I think everyone will join me in agreeing that she really added to the friendly chatter and encouraged a great atmosphere in the pub; alongside the endless supply of great beer and cider, the charity fund raising, the campaign to save the Lindfield limes, her parsnip chips and Halloween madness? My fear is that Jo and Lou will be more of the same :)
And I'm in training for the next beer and cider festival (August Bank Holiday Weekend)!
best of the 3 dark star brewery pubs - really friendly and comfortable, obviously the ale is superb!
Still on form, still the best real beer drinkers pub in a 10 mile radius. What more do you want from a pub then excellent beers well kept, friendly staff and locals, and cleanliness throughout.
How I wish the stand up was my local. Oi, Dark Star! open a pub in Horsham please!!!
Came here after our Dark Star brewery trip on 4/7/09. Still up to scratch and the weather was nice enough to use there garden. Good beer although the Hophead was slightly hazy due to a barrel change but still tasted lovely. Friendly customers, what more can you ask for.
I visited the pub after it won the Sussex CAMRA Cider Pub of the Year award and wasn't dissapointed. A great range of ciders, coupled with friendly staff makes this a 'must visit'.
A simply-decorated High Street pub in the delightful and pictiuresque town of Lindfield, this pub is indeed a gem and well worth a visit. Not especially traditional inside, the building could easily be converted into a shop but the pub's specialities lie in the beer!
Several hand-pumps of wonderful ales and lagers (no usual lagers here - Dark Star's own Organic). Lunch for 3. Clean toilets. Great place!
ODE TO A MEN'S ROOM
In white wash, pale, gaunt stainless pubs Clubs and late night bars Where bleached sterile colourless colded Folded thoughts neatly stored away Bored away with stilted disinfected clean Entertainment machines, drinkeries and chameleon venues Where you aborb the sharp clean lines Defines, delineates too clearly the contrasts Nothing lasts No, Give me the scars and finger marked doors, Foot worn floors and mascara run paint, Faint lights and shadows, Of the hallowed sacred solitude of the mens room Midnight moon coloured walls, Ill remember just this The colour of Cocoa Mist
Great pub the best of the Dark Star pubs by far. Daisy is now running it and she is bound to make it even better then before
DO NOT PASS THIS PUB BY. What a gem. It's a tied pub belonging to the Dark Star brewery (famed for delicious hophead ale) but also has guest beers from other micros. If you like cider there are 3 of those to choose from two. The girls in charge a great, and so too the barman. I was passing through on the annual London/Brighton cycle ride. Now I have to devise other reasons for going back - once a year won't be enough!
Excellent house - great beers and friendly welcome. Always a pleasure to visit!
The new landladies are now in charge but, don't worry, this pub and its beer, cider and perry are as good as ever. Food seems to be more widely available, though apparently they don't do it if they're too busy. The Dark Star "Old" was wonderful.
A great pub serving excellent real ales (3 dark Star plus guests) and real ciders. Decor quite mosdern but pleasant enough. Usually quite busy but always very friendly. The bar staff are welcoming and knowledgeable and the locals always seem happy to chat. Little in the way of food but the pasties are well worth trying. Darts and bar billiards for those who want something to do but most people just sit and chat and enjoy great beers and ciders in a great atmosphere. Not to be missed.
It does not get much better than this lovely pub.
well done both of you for making us feel so welcome
Best beer for miles around. Only wish I lived locally as I'd go there more often but daren't risk mixing drinking with driving. Comes as near to perfection as a drinker's, rather than diners, pub as you will find. 5 star. Please open a pub in Horsham!
2nd Cider Perry & Cheese Festival, Fri 26th, Sat 27th & Sun 28th October. Live music 8pm Sunday from the talented Greymatter.
A wide selection of delicious Ciders & Perry's over the three days, with a perfect opportunity to enjoy with a cheese platter.
Don't miss it! See you there Nix & Debs

Greeted by 9 handpumps, DarkStar Hophead, Best & Original, Oscar Wilde, 1648, something at 6.2%, plus 3 ciders including Black Rat. The look is modern, slightly spartan, but there is a bar billiards table or just stand by the bar near all that wonderful beer!
Arrived at 4 on a Saturday afternoon - pub was bustling but not packed, friendly greeting and service, and 3 Dark Stars and a guest ale to boot. Really enjoyed my visit and heartily recommend it.
Additionally, visitors will be pleased with the reasonable beer prices. All [Dark Star] beers were 2.40 a pint last night.
This pub is an absolute gem. I visited for the first time last night, following recommendations here and in Camra's GBG, and enjoyed no less than three exquisite Dark Star beers:
Mild for May - beautifully crafted dark mild - puts most others in the shade
Hophead - requires no introduction
Best Bitter - Delicate smoke and accute bitterness "sing in harmony" in this pint!
In addition, Whitstable Oyster Stout was a great one to finish on.
Pub is spacious and very pleasantly decorated, comfortably lit and has a beer garden. Also note that a range of hot snacks such as sausages in bread and pasties are available - check with pub for times.
Staff are very friendly here and have a great sense of humour, as do the locals - particularly those seated around the bar from 2100-2300 last night. Oh - must not forget the 35g bag of Jonathan crisps! If you were there last night you'll know!
Worthy of a 10/10, and certainly well worth the train journey (and the walk from Haywards Heath).

Fantastic Pub, always a nice friendly atmosphere & great beer festivals, thanks Nikki, hope there will be more beer fests to come

Visited after our Brewery Trip to Dark Star on 24/3/07. Lovely open fire, staff seemed genuinely pleased to see us, no smoking throughout FANTASTIC,Beer fine and wide range of ciders which pleased our one and only cider drinker. Decor a bit too modern for my liking though but apart from that a top notch pub.

I have heard a lot of good things about this pub but i wasnt that impressed when i recently visited.. i thought the service was rude from one guy in particular and it just wasnt a good atmosphere on the night, maybe i should return on another night and check it out again!!!

Dark Star is one of ny favourite breweries so this was a must visit for me and well worth the mile and a half hike from Haywards Heath station to the village of Lindfield, complete with a "wildfowl crossing" road sign as you enter the High Street!. Unfortunately the bus back stops running at 6.30pm but at least it was mostly downhill on the return leg!
The pub has a cosy feel without being too small or particularly old-fashioned. Six handpumps including two guest ales. Dark Star's seasonal Amsinck Black stout was particularly tasty.
Great pub. Another feather in Dark Stars cap.
great pub great beer friendly atmosphere. nice local ale by there own brewery dark star well worth a visit
the beer and pub is so good, when i walk in the door, i have a trouser accident..............its that bloody good !!
Excellent pub with excellent range of Dark Star ales and one guest when I visited. Friendly welcome and service. Please can Dark Star open a pub in London?!
That's to say: I hope the Festival becomes a regular fixture, not the dropping of pasties... Cheers,
Went to the Cider and Perry Festival last week and enjoyed a fine time sampling what was on offer. My mate thought the single varietal Kingston Black cider was nectar, and I have to agree.
The only downside was when my pasty fell from the bendy paper plate. Luckily, the floor here is so clean I had no hesitation in retrieving it and continuing back to my seat.
I hope this becomes a regular fixture.
Cheers!

Not a review, more of a notice...
I received an email from the lovely people at the Stand Up Inn reminding me of their CIDER, PERRY & CHEESE FESTIVAL.
It's on FRIDAY 27th, SATURDAY 28th, and SUNDAY 29th OCTOBER.
I'm fully intending to try and get to Lindfield for a session, as I said im my earlier review.
Cheers,

Used to occasionally pitch up here when it was the Linden Tree and even then it was a cracking little free house, specialising in excellent micro-brewed ales, dispensed with some effort by the little old lady who used to run/own it! Whilst I was sad to hear of the change of hands, I am looking forward to catching up with the place in its incarnation as a flagship Dark Star pub, for they are a brewer that has yet to disappoint me.
Beautiful! Beautiful beer! Beautiful barmaids! Beautiful Cornish Pasties! Beautiful minimalist decoration! Beautiful warm welcome! Beautiful toilets! Beautiful....
When I heard the Linden Tree was up for sale I feared that it would turn into wine bar or a bistro. Fortunately Dark Star took it over and it is a very good pub indeed. The Dark Star range is always excellent and there are usually two guest beers. On my last visit there were also three real ciders and a perry. The pub itself is very pleasant, much much more welcoming and comfortable than Dark Star's other two pubs.
Superb beer quality and excellent, friendly service. All in all, one of the best pubs I have visited in a long while.
The "Brewery Tap" for Dark Star! Soothingly decorated and kitted out with bare wood tables, this is a place to reflect on how good life can sometimes be. The wonderful bar staff serve a full range of Dark Star beers, AND a couple of guest ales!
The Hophead is the best I've tasted - yes - even better than the Evening Star! The pasties are to die for. Didn't try the chilli & chocolate one, but the ale & beef was gorgeous.
We were made aware of the Cider Festival to be held there at the end of October. Will definitely try to get along.
I agree with the other reviews. Although not a Dark Star fan myself, there are always guest beers, ciders and perry. They also held a very successful beer festival over the August Bank Holiday. Incidentally, it isn't really miles from nowhere-20 minutes walk from Haywards Heath station or,during the daytime, there are frequent buses from near the station. Some even stop right outside the door.
a larger version or the sister pub , evening star brighton. as always, a crashingly superb line up of ale, decor excellent, and barmaids that are very pleasing on the eye. trouble is , its miles from nowhere,so strictly a village locals pub.
Previously the darker and slightly more traditional Linden Tree, the Stand Up has expanded, brightened up, and continues the fine traditions of its sister pub the Evening Star in Brighton.
Excellent range of beer and cider and very friendly staff/management. A must visit!
Not bad at all, this is a very nice litttle establishment located in the heart of the highstreet. Don't expect a banging night out here, but take in the friendly service, contempory decor and cask ales (darkstar brewery). Also reccommended to challenge ypur friends to a game of bar billiards oreven chess, also budvar on tap for the lager drinkers!

The best pub in the area now that Dark Star have taken over. As The Linden Tree it was already a great beer lover's pub but very cramped. Now refurbished and twice the size. I thoroughly enjoyed my first visit. Very friendly service, two excellent pints of Hophead and a rather tasty sausage sandwich. Superb!
I took "apa"'s advice and visited this pub and what a great treat this was. set in a glorious village in Sussex near Haywards Heath, and serving ale at it's very best by the very friendly staff. i shall be definately be returning to this watering hole quite often. you should all go and see what your missing!!
Enjoy Dark Star beers at their very best in a perfect pub in a perfect English village.A very comfortable pub with very friendly staff and locals.Apart from Dark Star beers there are normally three guests on tap plus a couple of ciders.A must.
Sister pub of the Evening Star in Brighton owned by the Dark Star brewery. Good real ale range and a bar billards table.
