Absolutely SHOCKING customer services. Booked the ‘Duck Room’ for our Mothers 60th Birthday. Misunderstand on the costs regarding catering, which to be fair was our fault, but no effort or understanding was to be made by the Management on negotiating on the price for the number of guests. We explained we had a budget, which they clearly didn’t have any sympathy for, we asked if we could cater for 70%, which we were told no. Anyone organising an event knows you never cater for the full guest list!! The thing that annoyed and upset us the most is that it took 3 days of continuous calling by us the customer, to finally get a response and might I just say not from the Landlord, whom refused to deal with the situation. This all being a few days before the actual party! Their response was under no circumstances were they prepared to negotiate and this being on the Wednesday and the party was meant to be on the Saturday has left us with no venue and to be honest up S@#T streak and refusal of returning our deposit either!

IMPORTANT UPDATE Please note that new owners took over this pub at the beginning of 2013, all the reviews posted on this site are experiences received with the previous owners. For a more up to date and fair review of The Springhead go onto Trip Advisor. We have requested several times with 'beer in the evening' that the old reviews are removed and we get ignored, no telephone number to contact them on, very bad customer service. We take pride in our pub and would hate to think that people would read previous owners comments and not visit us. Come and see for yourself, Regards The Springhead

We went to the Springhead for a meal with family who were visiting from New Zealand there were 22 of us but as the pub says they can cater for weddings we were assured this would not be a problem. All the adults ordered carvery and the 4 kids ordered off the child's menu. The carvery was ok but had been out for at least thirty minutes before the pub started to fill up....mainly with our party. After all the adults had finished their carvery the children got their meals and that was after we had told them twice that they were still waiting!!!! And when they did eventually bring the meals for the kids they were wrong ! We asked for the kids meals to be taken off the bill as a) they had to wait 40 mins and b) because they were wrong but we were told they couldn't do that - apparently it was our fault that the kids meals were missed as they had so many tabs for the table - funny how they managed the rest of the pub! WOULD WE EAT HERE AGAIN? DEFINITELY NOT AND NEITHER WOULD WE RECOMMEND IT - all locals from Weymouth bar visiting family!! The Manager hid when we asked to complain directly to him.

I took my family to the springboard pub for the Sunday Carvery. The food was very disappointing, the meat was very dry as if it had been left over from the previous Sunday and the vegetables were cold. The staff were unwelcoming and arrogant. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Being a local and having lived in the village for the last 15 years, I have always used the Springhead. However, since the current landlord and lady have been there I have been appalled at the attitude, service and atmosphere everytime I go in. I have been using the pub for the last 15 years ever since I moved into the Village and this is by far the worst landlord and lady it has ever had. I thought I would give it another chance and visited it recently it was awful, I was greeted by Mr and Mrs Attitude there were children running freely and the Pub was freezing. I will not be going back. I cannot understand why the people who run the pub think it is acceptable to treat their customers in the way they do.

Visited this pub in October 2011 at 6.15pm on a Saturday. What a disapointment there was only one real ale on because nobody had bothered to change the barrel on the other two until we asked!! The pub was cold and I mean cold, we sat there with our coats on feeling very uncomfortable. The Tribute beer was ok but at 3.60 a pint for a very run down and cold establishment I think was very expensive, when better pubs sell it for 15% less.
I think you can guess that I was not impressed, no wonder it is up for sale!!!

Found this remarkable pub by accident. Tucked away in a charming village it is one of the best finds I have come across in many a year. Friendly staff, good selection of ales in great condition, great vibrancy in the bar and fantastic food, all locally sourced. I will be taking B & B in Sutton Poyntz for a weekend just to go back, do some walking in the splendid countryside and to chill out. It narrowly missed 10 out of 10 because I find 3.40 for a pint a bit on the steep side.

You could hardly find a pub in a more picturesque setting. Despite this our visit was less than memorable.
|
i went with a group of family this weekend (6 adults, 2 children 1 baby). absolutely rubbish. we went to there attracted by the signs at the end of the road, stating live music, great home cooked food, large childrens play park, etc etc. wrong! the 'play park' is 1 tyre swing, a slide and some old rusty monkey bars. the staff were very un helpful, not interested that a steak we ordered 'blue/rare' had no redness at all. the food was all average to cr@P and not cheap. it took ages for the food to come out, and then our tables meals came out spread over 25 mins, the 1st to get their meals had finished by the time the last one got theirs. the lasagne was swimming in grease, the childrens sausage and mash came with no veg, and it was definately a toddlers portion so if you have a child over 3 they'd be left hungry (4 cocktail sauages!!!) do not recommend at all!!
|
Visited this pub out of season. Only about 6 people in a pub designed to take dozens of people. Beautiful setting, but absolutely no atmosphere whatsoever, no welcome and tired, faded decor. (However if you're a film crew looking for a run-down looking 1970's setting - this is the place). Average beer.

this is a beautiful pub in beautiful surroundings. But im affraid it stops there. It would be the ideal location for many occasions if it wasn't for the alcoholic , abusive owners. We have visited the springhead on many occasions and everytime we start enjoying our visit ,the owners a Mr Richard Tredwell and a Mrs Debbie tredwell usually come stumbling through the door in a drunken / abusive stupor. How these characters are allowed to be in charge of a liscenced pub really does make me wonder. They contantly shout obceneties to members of staff and was only on our last visit that Mr Richard Tredwell had a young male by the throat up against a wall. This is disgracfull behavior and i would never recommend visiting to anybody with any sense or morals. This is a real shame as if the right people were in charge it would be a joy to visit.

Oh dear it looks like the landlord has been self reviewing again.....I think we can disregard the last three eh?
|
We have visited this beautifully situated pub many times for their Sunday Carvery. Richard, who owns the pub, cooks the food himself and the roasts are done slowly overnight. As a consequence they are delicious as are all the expected trimmings on offer, including cauliflower cheese and a table full of condiments. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the fire burns brightly in the winter months. The ales on offer are excellent and the other customers congenial (their children always seem to be well behaved!). What more could one wish for?

This pub/restaurant is a victorian building, set in a stunning location - small village next to pond with great views. Worth a visit just for that. Good real ales and wines and excellent food - lots of local stuff. Local beef, pork, lamb, venison, fish, etc. We really enjoyed our meal which was lamb rump for me and sirloin steak for my partner, both were first class. Nice and friendly. Highly recommended.
|
Fantastic Carvery on Sunday. Went there with my wife. We both had the roast pork and roast beef - superb meat and very nice selection of vegetables. Good polite service.
Pub is in a great village location next to the duck pond. Very pleasant. Will definitely be going back.

Me & my partner visited the springhead but wish we hadn`t.We ordered our meal and it arrived very quick as the pub was empty around 1pm.The food tasted ok but for what you pay you would expect better. The ale was good and thats about it.Two meals 1 pint & a coffee cost us 26.00.Not impressed we left to feed the ducks outside which was far better.A few days later we visited the springhead as to see if things were any better but no.We had fish & chips and was told that all the food was homemade etc.The fish was bought at iceland etc and was well cooked that when you put the fork into the fish it shattered. The chips were also out of a store and not cut on site etc. These 2 meals cost us 20.00.To be honest paying 20.00 for fish & chips is not cheap but to get something like what we received was a total waste of moeny. We have learnt our leson & if we visit again it would only be for the ale & feeding the ducks.Whilst we were eating our meal the chap to our right chair leg broke and he fell over, the lady in black behind the bar said i will get you another chair. If you visit the springhead by all means drink the ale & bring some bread to feed the 50 ducks etc and dont forget your sandwiches.Overal we paid 54.00 and come away from here twice wishing we did not eat.High prices and low quality food.

I will have to disagree on comments about this pub. Looking for somewhere different to eat on a night out without the kids, we stumbled on this place. What a beautiful area. The staff were extremely courtious and the food absolutely FANTASTIC!!! We did hear that the chef had moved on and that one of his staff had taken over, and what a delight. This was in August, so of any of you who had meals before, you should reconsider and try again. 10/10

Walked from Osmington & got there at 4:30 to be told we close at 4:00, its a pity they did not deem to put it on their sign at Preston, it looked lovely but we will never know ?

My Family visited the Springhead last night. The setting is beautiful and the pub looked really impressive from the outside. However, the inside looked tired and the food was far from impressive! My husband had the Liver and Bacon, which came swimming in pale and fatty gravy, with a huge piece of grey fatty bacon. I had lamb chops which were over cooked and also fatty. The gravy was concentrated and the mint overpowering. The kids opted for pasta bake which in fact was the macaroni cheese with a bit of tuna and peas thrown in with more cheese added. It was very 'gloopy'. It was very disappointing to say the least. When I went to complain, I was amazed when they all looked so surprised that some one didn't like the food. The owner was there and argued that was how you cooked liver and bacon and when I commented on the gravy being so awful he assured me it wasn't bought in and was made from scratch, my point being it was the taste I had a problem with. He told me he was going to take my comments on board but that was how you cooked it! When we left we thought it was typical of the restaurants Gordon Ramsey visited and wasn't surprised to read that someone had already mentioned that in an earlier review! I have given it a one for the lovely setting!!

I can understand the previous posting: The lady serving was rather offhand, almost verging on unpleasant, as if we were in her way. I too experienced this Fawltyesque approach, but found it rather charming once warmed to. Despite the low numbers of customers, the service was tardy, but the food on the whole was worth waiting for. Its not the Maze or the Waterside, but then its not 5 star prices. Great value for money and a good (not too extensive) menu. Just think of the service as quirky rather than rude and enjoy.

Just returned from a weekend away with my family and happened upon this Pub. It is in a beautiful setting with a duckpond out front and a play area and gardens out back. We stopped for lunch and must say we were very disappointed. The lady serving was rather offhand, almost verging on unpleasant, as if we were in her way. The food looked good on paper, although a tad expensive. That said, we were very unimpressed with the food when it arrived. 2 of the orders were incorrect and had to be redone, a cheese omlette turned out to be just an omlette (no idea where the cheese went), and a gourmet burger was anything but. I am sorry to say I would not recommend this.

I'm a bit suspicious of the 2 posts below. Both profiles have only submitted one review, which is a bit fishy.

Beautiful! Lovely old building beside the millpond in very quaint village. Warm welcome and nice to see a real fire. Great food! My husband & I both had the Scallops to start - wonderful! The Chicken dish on the restaurant menu was really nice & the other half thought the pheasant stuffed with wild mushrooms was excellent. Good service too. This was the best meal we have had out in a long time - we'll be back!
|
Brought the familly here last Sunday for lunch.Great Carvery - the rib of beef was first class. There was also pork & turkey which I didn't try, but reports from around the table were very good. Also great veg and big homemade yorkshire puds. Big plates too! Great location & very friendly.
|
Lovely location and sweet, polite waiting staff BUT "sizzling tiger prawns" were hockey pucks swimming in chilli soup - inedible. Main course was average made poorer by strange, bland vegetables (who decided that it was a good idea to boil the tough green leaves of a leek and serve the result as a main vegetable?). Pavlova was white mush with red sauce and a raspberry- no evidence of texture apart from the pips. What a shame..and a waste of a birthday "treat". Not so long ago the food was great so did I just hit an unfortunate night? I hope so...

My family and i visited this pub today and in my opinion the food was horrible, the jacket potato was burnt, they forgot to put a filling on it, congealed beans, cold chips, ham that looked like it had been hacked and liver that wasn't cooked properly. All in all very disappointing and we weren't the only ones to be complaining either and our comments were dealt with by a very rude man who wouldn't accept our views. Awful.

This is a beautiful pub in a stunning little Dorset village, not far from the main road, and well worth the effort. It's an old building next to the millstream - a very quaint atmosphere. The food is excellent. We ate in the cosy restaurant, where the menu included Seafood Tagliatelle, local Venison, and other interesting dishes. The bar menu was more traditional "pub food", but all home-cooked, with a good choice. Really friendly too.
|
We came to the area to visit Monkey World and stumbled upon this little gem. The food was excellent and the ale very good - in our native Yorkshire you have to book a fortnight in advance to eat in the only pub/restaurant of this quality. Pleasant staff and comfortable relaxing atmosphere. Great location - worth getting off the beatne track to find.
|
I spent last week on holiday with my wife & 2 children in the Weymouth area. We ate in various pubs. We returned to eat in The Springhead on our last night - it was the best we had experienced in area.
Beautiful location and friendly, efficient service.
Good quality bar and childrens menu. Ate from the restaurant menu on our second visit - my venison was excellent and my wife thoroughly enjoyed the seafood.
|
Yeah, I've always found the service to be really slooooow - but it's actually amusingly so. There can be 3 kids working behind the bar, all looking at the books or pretending to be busy, and completely ignoring the customers waiting.
The children serving are nice enough, but I much prefer to be served by adults.
The pub itself is ok, food is average, the main problem for me is that the interior looks far to much like a generic family eating chain-pub, especially the restaurant section.
The location however is PERFECT. Just be patient, buy your ales and sit by the stream.

My wife and I visited this pub for an evening meal on a Friday evening. It was disgusting. We entered a very dingy scruffy and cold pub. Some of the furniture was falling apart. The only man who seemed to be in charge took our order and informed us that chef had not arrived. We decided to wait, but other people who arrived with us took the better option and left. We wish we had. The food(?) arrived about an hour and a half later. It was awful, some of it burnt and some of it cold and inedible. The staff were not in the least interested in looking after their customers and seemed oblivious to anything but themselves. The location makes this pub popular but nothing else. Gordon Ramsay, we have found for you the ultimate challenge, but I fear that even you would fail. I hope this review is posted and not dumped in favour of better reviews because the pub is not worth it. Absolutley appalling.

Lovely pub in a lovely setting with a stream and ducks over the road and views of rolling hills from the large garden at the back. Sutton Poyntz is very picturesque and ideal for photos!!
We have been here on numerous occasions and always found the food to be of fairly good quality. We recently visited in the summer and the food was delicious, our only complaint being there was not enough vegetables served with the meal - an extremely small portion!! The service was very slow which wasn't too much of a problem for us, however I can see how it could be, especially with young children. The childrens' menu was also good with home cooked choices rather than the usual kids 'junk' food. Waitress was very pleasant and helpful too. Would definitely go back if in the area even though there was a relatively long wait for food.
Food - 8/10 (would have been more if not for veg portion) Service - 7/10 (would have been more if not for the wait) Ambience - 8/10

slow service, over complicated food. the food was good but at a price of falling asleep while waiting, even when we had the bill, it took 20 mins to pay!!!
worth visiting if you enjoy waiting to eat in the dark

I agree with the previous posting. We visited in late July 2007 at lunchtime, while on holiday in the area, on a friend's recommendation. V. nice location, between twee village with stream & ducks at front and open countryside at back. Good play area and tables at rear. Pleasant-seeming bar staff. BUT food took ages to come and was poor. I had an OK crab sandwich, accompanied by a dull salad which, when it was half-eaten, turned out to have slimy, shrivelled lettuce hidden inside it which looked as if it had been retrieved from the compost heap. My wife's salad was gritty. The staff explained this by saying "we grow all our own lettuce" -- as if that was an excuse for not washing it. They agreed my salad was "disgusting" and blamed the kitchen, but argued about knocking money off the bill. We heard an elderly lady ordering a cup of coffee ask if she could have it "not too strong". She was told she must "take it as it comes". This could be a good place but is seriously let down by the failings of the kitchen and service.

Had booked a table for 8.00 on a not very busy Tuesday evening-food order taken promptly, politly and efficiently -but nothing arrived until over an hour later.People on the next table had been waiting longer, they had a young child which voiced its opinion LOUDLY ! No explanation other than a "problem in the kitchen".A pity because the place is in a perfect location, good selection of beers and wine.Let down by poor service and food .Will returnbut only for drinks.

Recently been refreshed (rather than refurbished) and seems to be trying to go a little up-market. The focus is still very much on food but there is a reasonable choice of beers too. The location is great with a duck pond at the front and a view of the White Horse from the garden at the back.

Visited The Springhead, Sutton poyntz, April '05. Lovely to be able to enjoy a drink and a good meal in a totally smoke free pub. About time! Beautiful setting, dog free children's play area, reasonable prices.
|
The Springhead is a restaurant which serves a la carte food cooked from fresh local produce to order. The bar offers a wide selection of wines, and is proud of its status as one of the first pubs in Dorset to introduce a non smoking policy throught its bar and restaurant.
