Only been in once, but I had 2 very nice pints of ale and generally had a nice time. A bit surprised by the low rating really.

I guess it was you lot who whacked the wing mirror on the landlord's car then? I can't really judge the lack of service, but I'd try and start a fight with you if you whacked my car, frankly!

The Vic's always good - proper fires, real ale and whisky, and three cosy little rooms. Top notch! For God's sake don't drink the 'Prince Bishop' ale, because it's one of the most horrible pints I've ever had, and the rest of the people I was with concurred! The next pint I had was very nice though, and I won't hold one bad experience against one of Durham's nicest pubs.

I did the quiz in here last night, and it was rather good, although we didn't win anything! 4 real ales, which were all in good condition. A bit of a trek out of town though! Never tried the food so can't really comment on that. 7/10 for the beer and general atmosphere though.

Teehee, I don't dispute friendly, although I haven't been in enough times to really know, or indeed reasonably priced, but clean?! That's just plain false!

Recently visited the Black Bull again, and had a much less pleasant experience. One of my friends ordered a pint of Bombardier, which tasted distinctly soapy and generally a long way away from what it should taste like! We informed the bar of this, and the very arrogant young manager tasted it (or at least pretended to) and said it was fine, before joking with the other bar staff about our comments. The three members of my group who drink real ale regularly, myself included, all thought that the pint was terrible, and made this clear, yet the pub refused to replace it. We were then rudely asked to leave at about 11:05.
This used to be one of my favourite pubs in Preston, but the ales are often not on form, and the new bar manager seems to be an absolute pratt. I will be much less inclined to visit in the future.

The pub has its own beer festival, which is nice! Good Ale and decent decor, if a bit 'mock-old-fashioned'.

Really nice pub - Good Ale, interesting jazzy music and splendidly dark and dingy. I had a pint of Broadside, which was really good, and refreshingly different to the staple Greene King ales in just about every pub in Cambridge.
Also there's a 'Bar Billiards' table, which I hadn't seen before, and seemed like a really good game, although I'm not certain I understood all of the rules!

A rather horrible scream pub all-told. I once went there in anticipation of meeting friends, before seeing that there must have been about 500 people shouting to hear themselves over crap music, and I just walked out and went next-door.
Not too bad when I went in during the day, though, as they have table football and giant connect 4, which was fun with the pub empty. Still a pretty poor choice of beer, as with every other scream pub though.

Very nice pub with good, cheap food, well-kept ales, and a really nice outside bit. I've been in twice and both times there's been good music on, but incredibly quietly so you can hardly hear it! Got to be better than not being able to hear yourself think in the Graduate next-door though!

Homely atmosphere, friendly enough locals from what I could tell and a good dartboard. 3 real ales on, although there's only so many pints of Greene King IPA and Abbot that one can drink, as GK seems to have a monopoly in that part of the world! Ruddles was on as well, which is a welcome change.

Just got in from a couple of drinks in the Moor Park, and it was quite nice. Not as dingy as the previous comment implies, and although it can get quite smoky when busy, it's not been too bad on most occasions on which I've been there. Lots of locals propping up the bar, but they were friendly enough, and the woman behind the bar was friendly too. Not a great selection of ales, but still deserves a '7' for me.

Went in recently for a meal and a beer. The food was good and reasonably priced, and the beer was pretty good.

Contrary to what has been said, this is definitely a pub rather than a bar. It's got a big 90s music theme, with loads of pictures of Oasis, the Stone Roses, the Smiths and that kind of thing. No real ale but has Boddies smooth, which is ok, and the prices are reasonable.
There's a music quiz on tuesdays and a sport quiz on another night, not sure which. It's pretty quiet during the week but gets pretty busy at weekends.

The Prince Albert, Stow cum Quy
Yeah, it was like that when I went in a couple of months back. Looks in dire need of a facelift - I wasn't even sure it was open before trying the door! There wasn't any good ale either, but most of the other pubs in the area were shut in the afternoon. Seemed very 'localy', although that might just have been the time of day I suppose, and it probably livens up a bit in the evening.

I visited the Angel recently, and a few of my friends have vowed never to return, due to all the hordes of goth people, graffiti and the fact that it's pretty dingy inside.
I felt a bit differently though. Durham has no other pubs like the Angel, and while it might not be everyone's cup of tea, it certainly has character, and if you're into rock 'n' roll (the music was hardly death-metal when I was there), and don't mind the darker, dingier places, then you'll have a pleasant experience. They had Theakston's on tap, and it was quite reasonably priced.

Nice traditional pub, with a good mix of locals and students. Being a student, I've never had any trouble from any of the locals here. When you first go in it gives a bit of a 'local pub for local people' feel, but every time I've been in I've had a bit of a laugh or friendly chat with some of the regulars on the bar, and they're actually quite pleasant in my experience.
The prices, as always with Sam Smith's pubs, are obscenely low for pints (although not so for bottled beer, as I found out to my surprise!), but there is much less selection than in the Swan and Three, with no Hefe-weiss or Sovereign. The draught they do have is well kept, and, although it can get a bit smoky, overall this is a pleasant place to relax with a few pints.

The Lochranza Hotel, Lochranza
A rather nice pub in the village of Lochranza. They have a guitar which you can play, which won me over! Food and ale are both of a good standard, although I can't remember what I paid for the beer when I last went. The food was reasonably priced though.
Another 8/10

Really friendly atmosphere, pool and darts, and right on the seafront, making this a very nice pub. Live music during the summer as well.
The only drawback is the selection of beers, with the only bitter being Tennent's Velvet, although as said before, the Guinness is good if you're into that sort of thing. They stock the Arran ales (which aren't fantastic, but alright) and have a very wide selection of whisky, which redeems it somewhat.

Not a bad pub this one, close to the Mallaig - Armadale ferry. There's a public bar and a restaurant-type bit. The public bar's a bit small but wasn't terribly busy on either occasion that I was there. Sells the Isle of Skye beers, with Red Cuillin on tap, as well as other bottled ale.
There were a couple of foreign lasses working at the bar that seemed friendly enough but didn't understand phrases like 'Bottled beer' and 'Merlot', which isn't great, but it's quite clean, cosy and friendly, if a little on the expensive side. Good range of single malts as well.
21 Jun 2006 21:16
As has already been said - a scream pub like every other. Not the worst one I've ever been to though, and the upstairs is one of the better late night places (not sure I'd really call it a club) in Preston, with decent-ish music, pool and comfy sofas.
21 Jun 2006 21:04
About the usual for a Wetherspoon's really - a wide selection of ale at a very decent price, can be horrendously busy, but alright when it's not. Not the most cosy of places as it's really big and open, so it's not somewhere to spend a whole evening really, but not bad for a stop off on the way to somewhere else. The Old Black Bull across the road gets my custom more often.
21 Jun 2006 20:56
Nice friendly pub with lots of reasonably priced, well kept ales. Only discovered it recently but it will be a firm fixture in my Preston pub circuit from now on!

I would agree with the majority of posts below really. It's a horrible place and I only ever go there if dragged. Horrendously sticky floor, jam-packed full of idiots. But to be fair, it is a Walkabout - you wouldn't exactly go in there expecting a nice quiet pint of real ale...

(Probably) The best pub in the world. Excellent beer - 6 guest ales which get swapped for a new one as soon as they run out. Good range of bottled beer and whisky as well. Has a dart board (even if it could do with changing) and pool table, both of which are sadly lacking in many Durham pubs. Friendly atmosphere, good bar staff who are friendly but don't take any nonsense, and welcoming to regulars and newcomers, students and locals alike. Top Pub!

Great selection of ales, and Erdinger on tap. Cosy atmosphere, friendly staff on the occasions that I've been in. Splendid little place.

The Black Horse Hotel, Preston
Certainly one of the best pubs in Preston. Good beer (Robinson's - don't know where Theakston's came from)and a cosy atmosphere - top pub.
25 Mar 2006 12:34
The Ale's alright but it's a bit of an irritating place really. I just don't feel that comfortable in there, and the clientelle are either the 'trendy' types or old fogeys! Not that there are many pubs in the close vicinity to choose from, but it only deserves a '5' in my book.
25 Mar 2006 12:30
As someone who walks up Claypath most days, I'm not convinced this pub exists.
14 Jan 2006 02:46
This is a fairly poor pub all told. Some friends seem to swear by the "Scream-burger" but the market tavern is equally cheap and far superior if you're looking for pub grub in Durham.
As expected from a scream pub, beer is not very nice or interesting, and pretty expensive unless you've got a yellow card. I'm a student myself but get irritated by the purely student clientelle here, as i prefer to be in a mixed environment with some locals.
Truth be told, I only ever come here because it's next to the science site for the uni, and even then the victoria's well worth the extra 5 minutes walk.

Nice pub. Shows the footy and always has plenty of good, reasonably priced real ales. Got thrown out once for enjoying the real ales a bit too much actually...
24 Aug 2005 00:34
Not a bad drinking pub in the fantastic village of Woodplumpton. Food's expensive and not much good really. Pool table upstairs is free with a fiver deposit for the balls, and it's like having your own private club up there, which is nice. Always got one guest and 3 resident ales on - currently Ruddles, Theakston and Bombardier. Average prices for drinks. Good atmosphere and generally friendly locals.
24 Aug 2005 00:27
Bland, boring, annoying screens with (usually) crap music videos, inadequately staffed, crap food, 2 for 1 pints of Bodds for students before 7 o'clock :-)
24 Aug 2005 00:20
Good pub, good beers, good beer garden, not too expensive.... One of my favourite Durham pubs.

The Shakespeare Tavern, Durham
Pretty good pub - good atmosphere, usually good beer and a few weird little rooms to explore, especially 'the chokey' - an airing cupboard sized room covered with obscene graffiti. Last time I was there my mate was bargaining for beer mats off the walls to aid his collection by buying the rest of us pints! Never a bad thing...
24 Aug 2005 00:15
It's alright, but the choice of beers isn't great, and being right next to the superior Half Moon, it doesn't get my custom that often really.
23 Aug 2005 23:47
Not a bad pub, but not a good one either. Have been in on quiz night twice and the quizmaster is an arrogant scottish pillock who doesn't even know the answers to his own questions half the time (West Germany winning the first world cup?!). Guinness was nice though and the pub itself was quite pleasant. Bit of a shocker that about getting thrown out though!
23 Aug 2005 23:44
A truly pleasant, friendly public house. Many have been the evenings whiled away in blissful ignorance of the outside world, pint of Guinness, Bomber or the silky Thwaites' Smooth in hand. Good quiz on Thursdays (free sausage 'n' chips!), footy always on for PNE and England.
Top Drawer!

The Swan and Three Cygnets, Durham
Love it! The 1.32-a-pint Old Brewery Bitter is tasty and very kind on the wallet, and it's in a nice spot next to the river.
19 Aug 2005 14:34
Rather a pleasant pub all in all. Good range of guests and do a nice pint of Guinness. Food's pretty good and fairly cheap. Always nice to kick off an evening here with a pint of 80/

The Travellers Rest, Durham
Are you sure you didn't go to the Woodman? I really don't think this pub exists and your description sounds like the Woodman, which is indeed an excellent pub!
