A chain student pub with all the associated tedium you would expect. However has a very decent range of beer than you might expect and more worthy of a visit compared to some of the dross around here.

Joined the student set in the downstairs bar last Friday. Very lively! Friendly staff and plenty of good natured young people enjoying themselves, including me : )
p.s. can't remember what the beer was like but it didn't seem to matter.

Went upstairs after the downstairs bar had closed. Very LOUD music and aimed, I think, at the student scene. Enjoyed it all the same and being 'oldies' the wife and I had no problems getting past the door men. The whole of Friargate in which this venue is located worth a visit - a good selection of pubs.

Strewth! How long has Ropey Hall been a pub? It used to be a sort of function suite. I did my A level exams in there in 1970 and we had our leavers' bash there as well. A great do as I remember it. Inspector Fishwick and the local drug plod allegedly came along afterwards, swept the floor and analysed the findings. The band was the ever excellent Little Free Rock. Happy days!

Recently the pub has taken on new doormen; the type to use their power of discretion to disallow people entry into the premises due to reasons that can at first stem from failure to appear an exact likeness to a driver's licence taken three years ago, leading to an inability to replicate the signature on said license perfectly.. followed by the declaration that they just don't like people with "long" hair. As somebody who has been a patron for more than a year, I'll make it noted on this website that the venue has been more than inviting in the past but, as of late, the doormen have been keen to instigate aggresion for their own amusements. It has put me off this particular pub for life.
