Half Moon Inn and Country Lodge, Mudford
I often stay the night here whilst working in Yeovil. It's a nice place with an excellent menu and pretty good beer. The rooms are comfortable and good value. Sometimes the service is a little lacking but it will remain my lodging of choice when in the area.

Ooh, Gamboozler, does Sadie still work there? Does she have eyes like sin. If so, I'm in.

The Rising Sun Inn, Launceston
Hard to find - the sat nav tried to take us down a footpath. So we looked at the map and switched on our brains to figure out where it was. When we arrived, I still wasn't sure since it seemed an unlikely location and the place looked like some old Spanish farm buildings. Anyway, we had a nice lunch here. Beer not so good - a little insipid. Pleasant service and surroundings.

Lovely place in an idyllic village setting on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Dog heaven inside (well, if you like dogs, I suppose). Excellent range of interesting beers and the two I had were both very good. Limited range of food but what we had was very good. Oh,and the staff were very friendly and engaging. So, all in all ... wish we lived closer!

A beer shop that doubles as a small "pub". Excellent range of bottled beers. Superb, ever-changing draught and keg beers (and the odd cider). I've never used it as a pub, i.e. drinking on the premises, and I'm not sure I want to. It's not all that atmospheric or comfortable and, unfortunately, the owner really winds me up (I like all the rest of the staff!)

Dropped in here for lunch. Nice place with good food and an excellent selection of beers from the local Rebellion brewery. Service friendly too.

The Catherine Wheel, Marshfield
Stayed here a few times. The rooms are kind of tired but perfectly comfortable and good value. Food's pretty good and the beer is acceptable (could be a more interesting choice). It's a good looking Cotswold sandstone building and the interior is homely and inviting. I find the service can be unfriendly sometimes.

The Black Horse, West Tytherley
Really enjoyed my visit here for a weekday lunch recently. Good food and beer, and friendly staff all in a charming traditional little pub.
22 Dec 2012 21:00
If I wanted a civilised meal in convivial surroundings, I'd come here again - the food is excellent (great roast beef) and the service tries hard. But that same service is too fussy if you just fancy a pint or three, even though the beer is fairly good.
25 Nov 2012 17:45
Beer & service ok but I didn't like the braying hoards who seemed to want everyone to hear their lack of wit. Nice location.
15 Aug 2012 13:32
Tightest and most restrictive license I think I've ever known. Geezer on the beer served me the wrong drinks. I told him and he scowled at me and studied my receipt (you pay for beer with food ... only one beer per main course ... and then take your receipt to the beer geezer!). Then he wordlessly poured me the right drinks without another word!
Food was ok for a bit of novelty but overall disappointing. And the beers were just about the worst of Germany.
Lovely location though!

The Three Horseshoes, Thursley
This is a lovely place with a particular idyllic garden for a Summer's day. The beer is generally ok but I thought the food was mediocre and a touch over-priced. Placing an order for food was a real hassle but after that the service was pretty good.
Shame about the fake review (gfisher51).
15 Aug 2012 13:23
Disappointed in the beer here. The Bath Ales range is reasonably good but they were all too warm (and the weather's not exactly baking at the moment). Food was much better and reasonably priced. The interior is airy and well-designed, and service is fine.
They've renovated the bedrooms and mine was very attractive and comfortable but they're also expensive ... so I was disappointed to be charged an extra 10 for breakfast (which they don't advertise as being extra on their website), even if it was very good.

The Prince Leopold, Upton Lovell
I enjoyed my stay here. It's an attractive place by the river and quirky inside. A few too many loud opinionated people but maybe I was unlucky with that. Generally good service from friendly young women. Dinner was very good (excellent pork & mash) though breakfast less so. The Butcombe beers were fine if a little unexciting. Rooms are pretty cheap too.

The Strands Hotel, Nether Wasdale
Little bit disappointed in my visit. The beer range is impressive and I can't fault any individual beer but the brewer is maybe trying too hard. It wouldn't hurt to have a core of two or three traditional beers and save all the experimentation for one or two rotating extras. Perhaps I'm being over-critical here.
Place was a bit crowded with a yahoo-ish bunch of office worker types when I was there, which seemed out of place in a country pub so far from civilisation. Where do they work that they end up drinking/staying in Nether Wasdale?!
My food was disappointing too. My pate and toast came with the blandest "Mothers Pride" white bread toast and the salad was way past its best. Gammon steak wasn't bad though.
Good friendly service.
4 Jun 2012 14:39
Excellent location 'neath the fells. Good service and a reasonable beer range. Food was pretty good too. Let us leave the car in their car park while we tottered round the lake.
4 Jun 2012 14:31
Haven't been here for several years before popping in recently one lunchtime. It's a nice place but was very quiet. Beer a bit bland. My lamb was pretty tasty. Service friendly (& cheeky!)
4 Jun 2012 14:28
The Wasdale Head Inn, Wasdale Head
Stunning location and on a sunny day, sitting by the river is lovely. The beer range is good and the service was ok. Food lets it down a bit. The steak & ale pie is too small and too salty, and the beef medallions were just slices of steak (though a reasonable steak for all that)! Great chips though. Pick the right thing on the menu and it'd be very good, I reckon.
4 Jun 2012 14:24
Excellent range of very good beers but on my visit, the food was disapointing. The baguettes were good but too small. The accompanying salad was tiny and browned well past its best. The service was pretty miserable initially (no welcoming smile or "hello") but they brightened up later. The interior is pleasant but they should lose all the "do this", "do that" signs in the garden.
I'd return for excellent beer but not much else.
21 May 2012 17:53
Bit disappointed with this place. Beer and service a bit mediocre. Arrived too late for food. Fairly nice looking place though.
21 May 2012 17:46
Lovely, characterful place. The beer and service were both excellent. I've knocked a point off for the food range cos. it's limited to small rolls, either with a filling or in a ploughmans. My stilton ploughmans was very good but I really needed more bread to fill me up. One of our group asked to forgo the roll in her ploughmans for more cheese and was rewarded with an excellent and very generous plate of cheeses and salad. So if I'd asked for more bread, I might have got it!
11 May 2012 10:13
Had a good weekend lunch here. From the outside, the place has a bit of chain-pub feel and the inside, whilst perfectly pleasant doesn't really dispel that notion. But while I wouldn't necessarily expect good food or drink from a chain-pub, this place certainly has both. The beer, especially, was excellent with an interesting choice and bags of good flavour. (They also had a mini-festival going on with several extra beers but I don't suppose that happens all the time.) Service was pretty good too.
11 May 2012 10:04
FuzzyDuck says five but I think it's at least double that if you include the punctuation. I reckon slerpy's 12 March post could be set as part of the GCSE English Language exam this year - candydates, rerite this text, corecting the speling and punchewashon.
Here's my best shot ...
"Dementer, you have the right username. Breweries issue a price list; tenancies may be different as the beers are purchased through a Pubco. If you know nothing at all about beer and the pub industry then shut up and ask an appropriate adult sensible questions (and improve your sadly neglected education). I do not live in Croydon so, as usual, you have got everything totally wrong. Well done!"
16 Apr 2012 12:43
This place is a little run down but not uncomfortable. Service is pleasant if a little slow. Very good beer range but my mild was on the turn. Good value roast meals on a Sunday.
16 Apr 2012 11:49
Enjoyed my overnight stay here, being made to feel very welcome. The menu isn't hugely extensive and what there is is maybe a bit over-elaborate but everything I had was good including a really excellent steak. The beer was good enough without being particularly exciting
13 Apr 2012 11:11
Five years since I last visited and it's still a picture of a pub. I'm not a huge fan of Harveys beers but they all seemed in good condition. The menus's not hugely extensive but everything we had was pretty good and fairly priced. The service remains excellent (very fast too considering it was quite crowded).

The Hotel Continental, Whitstable
Not necessarily one of your best reviews imo, Lad.
Could we club together and give the Lad some funds to get around a bit more and review some pubs outside the Whitstable maelstrom?

Been here a few times and the Thai food is always very good. Pretty good value for Surrey, especially the three courses for a tenner deal. They do basic pub grub too which is also keenly priced.
What seemed new on my latest visit was a very good selection of beers. There's a pleasant interior and a nice little garden. Service was pretty good though I guess they could smile a bit more.
26 Feb 2012 19:20
This is a great place with really welcoming staff and service and a superb line up of several great beers (Bowman, Dark Star, Triple F, Suthwyk, etc.) and ciders. The food is excellent too. However the food is also expensive and on my visit, the portions were definitely on the small side so I knock a point or two off for that (else I'd give it a 10).
19 Feb 2012 17:57
Always enjoy staying here. It's a pretty comfortable place to stay and the service is always pleasant. Oh, and the food and beer are very good too!
19 Feb 2012 17:52
The White Lion, Hampton in Arden
Stayed a night here and everything was good. Well, we had a problem with heating in our room but it was sorted very quickly. Didn't have dinner but breakfast was fine. Beer is very good and the pub is a pleasant place to hang out
13 Feb 2012 11:41
A great location on the green and by the pond. The interior's pleasant enough too though it sometimes seems grubby. The beer is just about good enough but I advise against eating. It's cheap but every time I've eaten here (not really my choice!), it's been very poor quality.
24 Jan 2012 13:58
Excellent beer, pleasant interior and service. The only letdown was the food but I only had one thing off the menu so hopefully I was unlucky.
24 Jan 2012 10:54
Had a very good group Sunday lunch here in pleasant surroundings. Even though the car park was chocka, there seemed to be plenty of space inside. Actually, now I think of it, they allow customers to park and walk (the pub is right under the South Downs) so maybe folks were out and about. The food was a bit on the expensive side but we all thought it was very good. And the service was excellent even though we messed them around a bit (very attractive staff too ... if that matters ... probably does to them). Unfortunately, two of the three beers available were a bit off so that lowers my rating.
24 Jan 2012 10:41
Hey Dymchurchdaytripper, don't be too hard on Lucyx. We've all been in a few pubs where the beer smelt like the toilets.
I'll get me coat.
5 Jan 2012 12:07
Mixed views on this place. Beer was reasonable and the service was good. However, while most of the food I had was very good, it was very expensive and, for the money, ridiculously small portions. A three course meal left me pretty hungry! Not such an attractive place to hang out either.
21 Dec 2011 12:51
Blubeckers at Gomshall Mill, Gomshall
Had a pretty good Xmas lunch here. The beer is good, if expensive. Nice place too.
21 Dec 2011 12:46
The food for our lunch was pretty good and plentiful. The beer range is a bit dull but my London Pride was in good condition. Fairly nice interior but the service was a little lacking. Not really bad, but the woman in charge had a face permanently like thunder and they made us jump through a few unnecessary hoops.
5 Dec 2011 20:25
Pleasant pub with good beer and excellent service. Food was a little mixed but generally good.
20 Nov 2011 07:43
The Abinger Hatch, Abinger Common
Had a weekend lunch here. It's a pleasant pub and the service was good but the lunch was very poor value. 15 for a roast that was way too small and not particularly good quality (the parsnips reminded me of my youth and not in a good way - very tough & stringy!) We skipped the expensive puddings, reckoning that they too would be greatly over-priced. The beer was ok but also on the expensive side.
16 Nov 2011 11:17
Had a pretty good steak here and the beer is pretty good too. Excellent location and good service.
31 Oct 2011 10:13
The Black Bull Hotel, Coniston
My favourite of the Coniston pubs. The beer range is superb. I had three of the Coniston Brewery beers - The Oatmeal Stout and Infinity IPA were excellent but I found the Winter Warmer rather bland. I thought the food was very good and reasonably priced. And it's a nice place to hang out of an evening.
31 Oct 2011 10:10
Good beer but the service was a bit off-hand and the food is a bit over-fancy and over-priced. Good views but I reckon the Black Bull is rather better.
31 Oct 2011 10:06
Wainwrights Inn, Great Langdale
My favourite pub of this year's trip to the Lake District. Very good beer, food and service. Car park is too small though!
31 Oct 2011 10:03
Very crowded on my Sunday evening trip with a lot of tinies (half-term?). The beer was very good, especially their own mild. Pub is attractive and well located and the service was very good. I guess I think the food is a little mediocre.
31 Oct 2011 09:59
The Carpenters Arms, Burghclere
Had a pleasant weekend lunch here. Drinking the Arkells was nostalgic for me (drank a lot in my Uni days).
31 Oct 2011 09:56
HA HA HA HA HAH AH AHHA HAH HAH AH HAH AH HA HAH HA HA HA
Doughh-boy has visited 113 cities but only ever done one review. HAA HA AH AH AHA AHAHA HHAHA HH HAHA AHAHAAHA, this is too easy.
Pack Saddle at Chazey Heath ... rumbled ... you know it.
I shall never darken your fake reviews again.
31 Oct 2011 09:50
Very nice pub in lovely village just off the A3. There's a good little range of beers but on my visit, they weren't in good condition - rather flat and insipid (and it wasn't hot weather). Even worse, I'm afraid, was the food, some of which was pretty rank. Avoid the fishcakes and the steak and ale pie, both of which tasted very unpleasant. Chips were pretty good though.
It's a shame cos. this is the sort of place, with its lovely location and pleasant service, that could charge more than it does for food. Perhaps they should bump the prices up a bit and invest in better quality ingredients.
29 Sep 2011 13:46
Had a very good Sunday lunch at this attractively simply furnished pub. The food is certainly expensive but was good quality. Everyone enjoyed their roasts and my stilton ploughmans was also high quality and filling. The beer selection is good and the service was pleasant.
20 Sep 2011 13:51
Crown Rivers, Heathrow Airport
Watched England scrape by Argentina here with a very good pint of London Pride. Reasonable place to while away the minutes before your flight.
11 Sep 2011 22:30
Pleasant enough place with reasonable food , beer and service without being outstanding in any department.
8 Sep 2011 13:51
I dunno, PissFlap makes me laugh. I like her gritty obsession with all things toilet-related and I especially chuckled when she gave one pub 1/10 with the words, "the garden centre next door is very good". Not a criterion for marking pubs I've ever thought of using but I applaud her attempt to say something nice about the place in the most trying of circumstances.
8 Sep 2011 12:32
Great harbour-side pub. Can get busy for weekend lunches. Very good menu and food, and good beer. I ordered the cheese to finish off my meal and they brought delicious mountains of the stuff. The biggest chesseboard I've ever seen. I couldn't eat it all and had to stuff some in my pockets for later!
8 Sep 2011 11:33
The Jolly Tanners, Staplefield
Visited during the London Brighton car run last November (can recommend as a very good base for watching the old jalopies trundle by) so this review is a bit late. Lovely pub in attractive location by the village green. Food and beer both very good. Landlord was a bit brusque but this must be one of his busiest days of the year and he did look after us very well so that's gotta be forgiveable.
8 Sep 2011 11:28
Ha ha ha ha nice try, MikeDDD. So, you have the best beer in the world where you come from in Durham but you've never ever posted a review about any pub in Durham or, indeed, about any pub other than this one.
Perhaps it's because no other pub has ever asked you to review it, as you say this one does. Well, I'll ask ... go on, please tell us about the pubs back home.
8 Sep 2011 10:40
Lovely place in the middle of nowhere with extensive sloping garden and very inviting interior. Look out for the cats that occasionally sit on the stools at the bar like true regulars. The beer and service are always good but the food is a bit mediocre.
8 Sep 2011 10:22
The King William IV, Mickleham
A pleasant environment at this smallish pub, both inside and on the terrace with the good views. I too have sometimes experienced the unpleasantness of the landlord but the high quality of the (expensive) beer and food keeps us coming back from time to time.
8 Sep 2011 10:15
The beer and service here were very good on my most recent visit but I once had the worst Welsh rarebit I can ever recall here. Usually, I'll eat just about anything but I couldn't face it. No discernable mustard or other spicing and the cheese was tasteless plastic. Just beneath the cheese was a layer of some lardy/mash like material that was truly horrible. To be fair, this was a year ago. I'm hoping the chef has changed.
8 Sep 2011 09:53
Bit disappointing to find a pub in such an out of the way village that doesn't have a decent garden. Food, beer and service just about acceptable but certainly nothing special.
8 Sep 2011 09:47
Ha ha ha ha ha, PissFlap, great review. But wasn't that the plot of a Marx brothers film?
16 Aug 2011 16:02
The Inn on the Beach, Hayling Island
Great location on the beach. Good food (huge plate of fish & chips) and service, and pretty good beer.
16 Aug 2011 13:16
The Duke of York, Tunbridge Wells
I wasn't expecting much from this pub given its tourist trap location but the beer was perfectly pleasant and the food was good and good value. Service was very positive & friendly too.
16 Aug 2011 12:21
The location is lovely and the service was very slick. It's a bit of a get-em-in, churn-em-out kind of place. The beer was reasonable but the food was a bit dodgy. The pie was too salty and the broccoli actually made me gag. Somehow, they undercooked the stems but turned the florets into a really unpleasant mush (it was the mush that made me gag).
16 Aug 2011 12:16
Gosh, what a lot of positive comments this year from people who've only ever posted one pub review. Oh no, wait, a couple of them have posted other reviews. Who'd have thunk it, those other reviews were posted around the same time and are all scathing. Goodness me, and those scathing ones are about the local competition to the Pack Saddle.
What do I think of this pub? I've never been there. Was thinking of going but not likely to now since someone obviously feels it's necessary to post a lot of fake reviews! Especially like the one that says, "Will book next time to guarantee a table". Must remember to book.
Apparently, the landlord has a sense of humour and likes to tell a few jokes. David Brent must have found a new job.
16 Aug 2011 11:57
The Queens Arms, Corton Denham
This is one of my favourite pubs. The beer and food are excellent (the latter is expensive). The accommodation is very good (it has character but is also comfortable and has good amenities). The village setting is lovely and the bar area is cosy and traditional. I suppose, sometimes, I think the service is a bit off-hand. I guess, given the location and upmarket nature of this place, I might also expect the kind of problems with haughty locals that others describe. But having stayed here a dozen times or so, I've never had any problems.
7 Mar 2011 12:46
Chuck,
Thanks for that but I'm still not sure. Food good, beer good but, overall, would you say the Clyde is a nice relaxing place to spend the evening or not?
16 Jul 2008 14:55
The Rose and Crown, Rickmansworth
Pleasant location and interior. Good beer. Our Sunday roasts were very good and good value. Service was a bit snippy but they were busy and we did mess them around a little.
7 May 2008 13:43
Great location on the river but the food is hopelessly overpriced, mediocre and comes in tiny portions (3 for a pathetic little bowl of chips). The service was slow but the (Greene King) beer seemed OK.
2 Aug 2007 13:57
On the slightly expensive side but this is a lovely pub in a gorgeous setting. The menu was a bit pricy but it mixed cheaper "bar food" with more ambitious items and all seemed pretty good quality. Harveys beers were all good and the service was excellent and fast.
28 Jul 2007 11:28
Expensive! The beer is excellent and the food was good and well presented but tiny portions. Nice staff and a pleasant location but it didn't feel like a real pub to me. I guess they're going more for the gastropub thing.
28 Jul 2007 11:25
The Cyder House Inn, Shackleford
Felt a bit cheated by the fact that they only had once cider - a fairly identikit commercial one at that (Stowford Press). Food was OK but a bit greasy. Nice guys behind the bar.
28 Jul 2007 11:20
They do a good quality, really good value (6.50), really big Sunday roast here. Actually, that's all they do Sunday lunch but if you fancy a roast, this could be the place to come. Slightly mediocre Greene King beer and it's a bit smoky (not for much longer!) and dingy inside (no garden ... or car park for that matter). Staff were friendly and Rottingdean's a nice little seafront village with the undercliff path to explore, a windmill and nice views.
19 Jun 2007 10:13
Had Sunday lunch here with a group of friends. Great service - they even reserved two tables for us in the restaurant and on the patio so we could choose. We chose the patio, which was very pleasant by a stream (not the Thames!) with ducks and fish. Bar menu was a bit restrictive (they do a sort of 2 or 3 course menu with more choice but we all just wanted one course) but the food was widely praised (ploughmans, baguettes, etc.) My bacon cheeseburger was very tasty, a huge platter and very good value. Only slight negative is the beer. All kept well but it's Greene King mostly, which isn't all that inspiring (imo).
12 Jun 2007 11:16
Very disappointing for me. The bar is rough and I wasn't allowed in the lounge (as a non-resident), despite both being virtually empty. The barman was frightening. One of my beers was off. The food was too fancy and they could have done with a few basic bar meals. I wanted to like this place but it doesn't work for me.
3 Jun 2007 09:12
Had an excellent meal with very good beer here recently. Lovely location. Bit cramped and crowded in front bar and service can be a bit slow.
3 Jun 2007 09:07
The Glen Rothay Hotel and Badger Bar, Rydal
Had an excellent dinner here with very nice beer. Very friendly staff and lovely location.
3 Jun 2007 09:04
Nice little pub in picturesque setting. Squeezed me in for good dinner despite being fully booked. Good beer.
3 Jun 2007 09:02
Completely messed up our visit, allowing our reserved table to be given away to others. And wouldn't let us sit in the restaurant and eat the bar menu. Very poor service. Still, beer was pleasant. I'll never know about the food.
9 May 2007 10:43
The Abergavenny Arms Hotel, Frant
Nice interior and very friendly and helpful staff. My London Pride was in good nick. Had an expensive ploughmans but it was huge and packed with fresh salad, pickles, nice bread, etc. My only disappointment is that the garden faces onto a busy noisy road.
23 Apr 2007 14:48
Nice location and interior. Food is pleasant but over-priced. So were some of the bar drinks (1 for a half of soda water?!). The beer was a bit dodgy on our visit too. So, all in all, a bit disappointing.
1 Apr 2007 23:41
Stopped here for Sunday lunch in a group of over thirty people and they coped magnificently. Excellent beer and the food was both good and good value (chips a funny colour, though!). Nice interior and location.
22 Feb 2007 12:00
The Wheatsheaf Inn, Marsh Green
Good value, wide ranging menu. Good beers. Had a very pleasant Sunday lunch here.
22 Feb 2007 11:52
Reasonable food and beer, very fast service. All round, pretty good.
5 Jan 2007 18:17
Pleasant Sunday lunch here with good beer. Nice staff but the beer garden is, well, just a pokey terrace, really.
27 Nov 2006 14:02
The Prince of Wales, Farnborough
Had a very pleasant Sunday lunch out front here watching some of the planes from the Farnborough airshow (I know, this review is a few months late)! Excellent beer and very nice staff.
27 Nov 2006 14:00
The Duke of Cumberland, Henley
Superb interior and surroundings and beer is pretty good. But the food is overpriced and my Sunday lunch was pretty poor (dry and flavourless). Very crowded at tiny bar too.
27 Nov 2006 13:51
Consistently excellent Fullers' beers but very mediocre food (oven chips?!). Just been refurbished and it's a bit a of a garish cream and dark maroon now. Staff seem generally nice though there also seems to be a fair turnover.
27 Nov 2006 13:40
I quite liked the decor at this place. The food was overpriced (but OK quality) on my visit and the beer was acceptable.
27 Nov 2006 13:32
Excellent beer and very good food on my Sunday lunch visit. Place was packed.
27 Nov 2006 13:27
Had a Sunday lunch here. Excellent roast and reasonable price. Taylor's Landlord was very good. Building looks a little odd (i.e., has character), inside and outside, being an ex-tannery. Staff were very friendly.
27 Nov 2006 13:24
Dropped in for Saturday lunch. Nice staff and pleasant surroundings. Good quality London Pride and acceptable Gales Winter Ale. Very good value baguette meals.
27 Nov 2006 13:21
The Squire and Horse Inn, Bury
Fairly unassuming place but perfectly pleasant, imo. Was here for a Saturday lunch. Can't really report on the beer - didn't try any - but others in my group seemed content. Location is great - underneath the South Downs and minutes from footpaths along the River Arun. Our food was expensive but good and filling. Service was good but perhaps a a little over-fussy.
