The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Sadly, as you can probably gather, the post from Cherrybab below is from a former employee who left us over 3 years ago. She is almost 70 years old but really needs to do some growing up, such a shame.

The Maypole Inn, Yapton

What a cracking pub again, had heard it had gone downhill but on our Coach visit of 4/9/2010 the beers were in cracking form. Could have stayed in the garden far longer but our coach beckoned. Shame will give it longer next time we're passing 9/10.

14 Sep 2010 21:25

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea

Wonderful little pub on the outskirts of Shoreham, mind your head when you walk in though all higher than about 3 foot 6 in.

Let down was the beer though, all apart from the Sussex Best undrinkable. Will put this down to a bad day at the office, we all have them. Still though nice enough pub 7/10

Isn't it 2210 already, feels like I've been here that long, will I be smiling gol (grimace out loud) not bloody likely ;)

6 Aug 2010 02:11

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Ashhowe I being the landlord of this pub I have to admit I have no idea how the scores work on this website. You complain of a low score of 7.2, vote I hope for more than this and we go down to 7.1 Open to abuse but then the rated by numbers haven't changed that much which makes me think someone at BITE HQ has an influence. I love this website and always check when we are going on hliday but I do honestly think scores are manipulated.

17 Apr 2010 01:50

The Evening Star, Brighton

Blah Blah Blah all I ever hear as a fellow publican is the blooming Evening Star in that their Brighton, bloody awful place full of ale drinkers drinking good ale and nothing else. Seriously though Matty and gang keep up the good work, popped in for a quick pint on my 40th and was excellent. 9/10 only losing one mark as coudn't find a seat to sit in and read the paper.

8 Apr 2010 01:21

The Black Dog, Weymouth

Someone was murdered here apparently........about 2-300 years ago.

Popped in for a quick pint whilst waiting for the bus, not bad but didn't see any ale on so if you're after ale I recomend a quick phone call to check.

14 Dec 2009 01:12

The Kings Arms, Weymouth

Popped in one lunchtime as saw the 3.50 deals for food. The fish and chip shop around the corner was charging 6 just for a piece of fish jesus christ. No real ale on, barman was nice and friendly and the 4 portions of Scampi and Chips were O.K, not brilliant but for 3.50 what do you expect. If I lived in Weymouth I would probably use this pub. 7/10

5 Nov 2009 01:21

The White Hart, Weymouth

This is the pub by Debenhams I think. No Real Ales. I asked and the Landlord said when he took over he had 4 on, then 3, 2, 1 and now none due to lack of demand. Decent enough pub for me wanting to get away from the mum and wife shopping but don't expect too much. 5/10

5 Nov 2009 01:16

The Swan, Abbotsbury

Having just done an 8 1/2 mile coastal walk was very very glad to put up my feet at this pub. Not much in the way of real ale on, not to my liking anyway, so had a couple of refreshing pints of cider. Landlord been here since 1966. Decent pub, food looks good but a bit pricey. Reccomend it though as landlord nice and friendly. 7/10

5 Nov 2009 01:07

The Hawkley Inn, Hawkley

Lovely end to our day out at this picturesque little village pub. Good range of local brews on, kept in fine form, a lovely garden and a front porch you can sit at and watch the sun set. Only problem was we didn't have the coach for much longer so had to leave.

27 Sep 2009 15:14

The White Horse Inn, Priors Dean

We left before the music started yesterday but enjoyed the beers and ciders on offer at there festival. Another Idyllic setting and the burgers and O'Hagans hotdogs were well priced at 3 a shot. Would give it a 10/10 but for the rather rude young barmaid inside the pub 7/10.

27 Sep 2009 15:10

The Railway Arms, Alton

Very good pub, traditional at front and a new extension out the back. Beer very good and friendly locals. Had a couple of lovely pints of Dark Star Hophead and tried the Strawberry beer, wow, couldn't drink a whole pint at 4.10 but would certainly try a half next time we're in town. Very nice and reasonably priced at around the 2.50 mark. Another 10/10

27 Sep 2009 15:05

The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton

Don't often give a 10 but impressed with our brewery trip here and the friendly service in the pub afterwards. Prices very good at around the 2.30 mark. Idyllic setting with fields in the distance and roses climbing the walls at the front. This is where we had the idea to grow roses outside our pub in Pompey only for the scum to first pinch the trellis and then the roses. :( 10/10

27 Sep 2009 14:59

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Finally got our full list of beers for our Beer Festival Friday 2nd October till Sunday 11th. Will have 6,7,8 on at a time due to space, if you know the pub you know the problems we have with being small. 50 in total, don't think we will be busy enough to go through all 50 but will give it a bloody good go.

18 Sep 2009 01:22

The India Arms, Portsmouth

Pub and restauarant fully up and running now. This pub is now called The Italian Bar & Bistro and the first reports I have heard on the food are promising with several of my customers trying the food in there and loving it. The Carbanara (sp) is especially good apparently. Give it a go.

30 Aug 2009 22:43

Coal Orchard, Taunton

Was having a bit of a McSpoons holiday so decided to give it a go and yep another typical Spoons. Barman was good, food was ping [ping good and the toilets were upstairs. Why do I always waste valuable time looking for the toilets on the ground floor when they're always upstairs.

Not a bad visit all in all with your usual selection of clientele.

30 Aug 2009 22:25

The Queens Head Hotel, Minehead

Very large pub with a very large selection of ales. Didn't have my GBG on holiday with me so we just walked around Minehead trying different pubs. Bingo the best one we found in Minehead by a country mile. Keep it up peoples.

30 Aug 2009 22:02

The Duke of Wellington, Minehead

Very impressive McSpoons probably the poshest one I've ever been in. Typical good prices but absolutely no atmosphere. Pleasant staff who called you sir, wow. Would have given it 10/10 but vowed never to give a McSpoons that so 8/10.

Oh yeah local bums use the benches outside.

30 Aug 2009 21:59

York House Inn, Minehead

Quiet when we went in, didn't see any ale so had a lager. Only after I ordered did I see the 3 ales around the corner doh!!!

The dugout has got to been seen to be believed, big screen T.V with probably 20-30 seats set up in terrace fashion. Live music certain nights, food.

Reasonable pub

30 Aug 2009 21:56

The Hairy Dog, Minehead

Sports bar with lots of screens showing footy. Didn't see any ale.

30 Aug 2009 21:53

The Star Inn, Watchet

Can see why they are CAMRA accredited with a lovely selection of beers on the one I tried from the Cheddar brewery, lovely pint. Holiday season so expected it to be busy but was suprised just how busy for a Tues lunch.

Food portions were large and so was the price. Don't understand why these pubs don't offer smaller portions and more realistic prices. The barman was friendly, lives next door apparently, and I was going to sample another lovely beer only to be stuck behind a customer who seemed to be ordering drinks and food for a coachload. The queue got bigger, the barman didn't panic, but no one else popped behind the bar to help.

One elderly couple left, and after a long wait so did I without another drink, had the steam train to catch so couldn't wait long.

Lovely pub, good barman, fantastic beer but overpriced food and a lack of staff at busy times. Would have been 9/10 for the beer alone.

30 Aug 2009 21:50

The Lethbridge Arms, Bishops Lydeard

Didn't have long in Bishops Lydeard before we had to catch the last steam train back to Minehead so only managed this pub. Cotleigh beers on which I managed to sample 2 1/2 pints of, the landlady was lovely and we talked for some length on the beer tie and how she was struggling to keep the ales so reasonably priced. Saw this pub on a quiet Tuesday afternoon, can't comment on clientele on a Fri and Sat night as landlady mentioned they get all sorts in. Recommend this pub but leave yourself longer than 1 hour.

30 Aug 2009 21:42

Castle Inn, Ryde

Think this was the pub I visited, has got a large Liverpool F.C flag up and the racing on. Range of ales O.K if you like Fullers/Gales. Seemed to have the feel of a locals pub to it. Would go out of my way to visit again. O.K

30 Aug 2009 21:27

Fowlers, Ryde

A typical McSpoons pub, cavernous and souless but with a suprisngly good range of ales. Tried a Titanic beer which was very good.

30 Aug 2009 21:23

The White Hart, East Cowes

Very quiet when we popped in for a quickie, a lot better and tidier than when we visited 5 years ago. The back bar has been done up but only one ale on that didn't set the pulse racing. Pool table for those who want one, regulars seemed friendly enough but I would reccomend if you want ale go to The Ship & Castle around the corner.

30 Aug 2009 21:16

The Ship and Castle, East Cowes

Best ale house by far in East Cowes with a very enthusiastic landlord. Very small pub which is rather dominated by the large Sky Sports screen. Bit tucked away by the Red Funnel ferry but worth looking out for. Apparently voted the Islands 5th best ale house. Keep it up.

30 Aug 2009 21:10

The Prince Of Wales, East Cowes

Visited early evening and drank lager as the selection of ales was minimal and I'd worked up a thirst working in my mum's garden. Now doing food which looked good but the menu's were photocopied and were filthy. Put you off the food which as I say did look rather scrummy.

Will go back when I visit Mum again to see if the ale selection is better.

30 Aug 2009 21:08

The Chequers Inn, Rookley

Found a table that seated all 7 of us almost immediately when we came for the carvery a couple of weeks back. Pleasant staff, good range of ale although I didn't try any as was driving. Big garden for the children and plenty of wasps for everyone. Bit on the pricey side though but generally good.

30 Aug 2009 21:04

The Horse and Groom, Ningwood

All I can say is book a table. Turned up on a Sunday lunch at about 12.45 only to find 2/3 rds of the tables with reserved signs on them. A couple reserved for 1.30, yep that's two tables out of action for 90 mins on a busy sunday lunch. 7 of us left without even a drink and went to The Chequers.

30 Aug 2009 20:59

Leopold Tavern, Southsea

The best place to visit in Albert Road if you want a decent pint of ale and the footy. Good landlord and the place my locals go to sample ale and footy. Apparently well recomended.

13 Aug 2009 04:31

The White Horse, Southsea

Now known as The White Horse, picture above confirms it, and has been known as the White Horse for some time. Can't comment on the beer as haven't been there but the landlord who comes into my pub seems a fine fellow.

13 Aug 2009 04:25

The Five Bells, West Chiltington

Last pub on our Dark Star brewery trip on 4/7/09 only cut short by our coach driver wanting to go home. Excellent pub with a landlord who looked genuinely pleased to see us. Lovely setting with lots of greenery so if you're stuck in a city for most of your life this is an excellent place to come and sample good beer at a reasonable price. Just for the location the best pub we visited today. 9/10

6 Jul 2009 18:25

The Evening Star, Brighton

2nd pub after our Dark Star brewery trip on 4/7/09. Never been before but heard the rave reviews from others and wasn't dissapointed. Can't remember what I had to drink by this stage but very impressed. And how many pubs have 2 porn shops across the road. Will have to visit without the wife next time ;)

6 Jul 2009 18:22

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Came here after our Dark Star brewery trip on 4/7/09. Still up to scratch and the weather was nice enough to use there garden. Good beer although the Hophead was slightly hazy due to a barrel change but still tasted lovely. Friendly customers, what more can you ask for.

6 Jul 2009 18:19

The Hampshire Bowman, Dundridge

Excellent buffet laid on when we visited after a Bowman Brewery trip. Probably me but couldn't get on with the Stonehenge beer I had, it was green. Know it's supposed to be green but something in my head said no.

18 Mar 2009 21:11

The Wheatsheaf, Shedfield

Up to usual standards, excellent beer on stillage, friendly clientele. Keep it up.

18 Mar 2009 21:09

The Osborne, Southsea

Forget my comment below, meant to be for The Marmion. Have asked for it to be removed but Bagpuss and the mice who run BITE don't seem to be at home. The Osborne is now Kingsleys Entertainment Bar BTW, that's all I can tell you.

12 Dec 2008 13:50

The Osborne, Southsea

Very nice locals pub, one which we endeavour to visit when we get out. Nice atmosphere with a good clientele and so differnet to the plastic bars you get in Palmy road. One of these plastic pubs even had a bouncer on the door on a Monday night.A little gem IMHO.

9 Dec 2008 15:56

The Apsley House, Southsea

OK pub with 3 beers on from Hopback when we visited. The owners must have read previous posts about cleanliness as the toilets were fine. All in all not a bad pub with a friendly member of staff.

9 Dec 2008 15:52

The Phoenix, Southsea

Lived in Pompey all my life and only got around to visiting about a month ago with my wife, have been back since. Both visits on a quiet monday night. Lovely pub with a weird set up, the pool table is in the shed. Friendly local talked us through one of the pictures on the wall.

When we get out will endeavour to try this pub more often. Well done.

16 Nov 2008 13:20

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

In reply to ETA, are you sure you've got the right pub as the last two GBG's have not got any food times at all. Also I don't recall ever having a beer on called Copperhead and to be jostled by another customer sounds very unlike this place. Please reply as very interested to find out what pub you did check out in the GBG.

15 Nov 2008 18:23

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Beer Festival coming up this Friday the 3rd October 2008 till Sunday 12th. Those of you that know the pub know we haven't the space to put on a normal beerfest so we will endeavour to put on 40 beers over the week, 26 new to us 14 old favs.

30 Sep 2008 00:23

The Dolphin, Portsmouth

Re-opened apparently, can't comment as haven't been there since my last comment.

28 Aug 2008 01:08

The Farmhouse, Portsmouth

Dined here on a Tues lunchtime and found it fine. Staff pleasant, place was clean but can see previous opinion of pushchairs and chavettes.

Didn't try the beer as driving, Green King IPA and Speckled Hen on offer, stuck to coke, wise choice.

Food was excellent in my opinion if you want lots of it at a decent price, if you want a letuce leaf covered in shite go somewhere else.

8/10 only losing 1 mark each for 1 allowing chavs in and 2 showing the rerun of Pompey losing to Manure on Sky.

28 Aug 2008 01:05

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Answer to previous message. Slake the beer in the jug would not have been there for more than a couple of minutes. We poor a couple of pints into a jug when a beer is particularly lively. Helps us to keep down wasteage and keep the price down to you, having a beer where you waste a 1/2 to the drip tray for every pint would mean a price of more like 3 a pint to the customer. Not good

4 Aug 2008 22:22

The Rose in June, Portsmouth

Last pub visited after our Bowman Brewery trip on 28th June and yes it coincided with the pubs beer festival, howzabout that then. Everthing reasonably priced at 2.50 a pint and when we arrived they were selling off burgers on the cheap.

Excellent beers sampled before I had to sadly depart.

Nice one Paul, I'd kill for a garden like yours.

29 Jun 2008 18:19

The Wheatsheaf, Shedfield

Coach visit here after our visit to the excellent Bowman Brewery. Excellent Skew ale sampled, staff and landlord friendly, even gave Big Baz a free pint just for watering 1 hanging basket. If we hadn't of been on a tight schedule could have spent an entire afternoon here.

29 Jun 2008 18:15

The Hampshire Bowman, Dundridge

Lovely pub when we visited for there beer festival on 28th June however the prices of 3 a pint on everything and 4 for a baquet did seem quite steep. Was told the prices go up for the beer festival and they are not always this expensive.

Lovely garden and the extension, which wasn't there last time we paid a visit, was well done and could have been mistaken for being there longer.

An enjoyable visit.

29 Jun 2008 18:11

The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton

Have got to agree with Mr Reasonable below, we turned up in a coach yesterday and the look we got from people sat on the beches outside, had to check to make sure I hadn't grown a second head.

Apart from that a top notch pub, serving good real ales in an idyllic setting. Landlady even agreed to stay open an extra hour for us.Prices seemed reasonable and the elder beer the pots produces is wonderful.

Keep up the good work.

29 Jun 2008 18:04

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Congrats Judy and team on your award, you kept that quiet didn't you.

The Barley Mow, Castle Road, has won a prestigious award for the quality of its real ale. The accolade, devised by Greene King in conjunction with The Publican newspaper, saw the pub beat hundreds of other contenders in the nationwide search for the country's Best Cask Ale Pub.

28 Mar 2008 17:20

The Maypole Inn, Yapton

Alan what to do, do you support Pompey and hope they beat WBA and hence reach the final considering Cup Final day falls on the same day as Yapton Beer Festival, or not.

A nice problem to have me thinks:)

Play Up Pompey

16 Mar 2008 18:23

The Dolphin, Portsmouth

8 beers on when we visited one Wed evening. Tim Taylor Landlord a bit too warm for my liking but decent enough.

22 Feb 2008 14:55

The Sandrock, Boundstone

Last pub we visited on our Hogsback day out before we shot back to catch the England secind half collapse against Wales on 2/2/08. Again beer selection and quality fantastic, efficient member of staff behind bar but why oh why oh why are pubs like this so quiet on a Saturday afternoon. Regulars from my pub who couldn't make the trip, due to Chesterfield beer festival, told me if there is one pub to visit in the area then visit this one. Come on people visit these independent pubs in the afternoon or risk losing them and only having chain pubs to visit.

4 Feb 2008 18:06

The Bat and Ball, Boundstone

3rd pub on our Hogsback day out. Mini-bus dropped us off on main road and we had a very pleasant walk along stream to pub.Again pub spotless and beer good quality. Seemed to be more babies drinking milk than there were adults drinking beer when we visited on a Saturday afternoon. Very family orientated with children's playpen in garden so all in all not a place to visit if you don't like children.

4 Feb 2008 17:55

The Shepherd and Flock, Farnham

Second pub visited after our Hogsback Brewery trip on 2/2/08. Spotlessly clean and well laid out with a good choice of beer. Had been warned that this is the stockbroker belt so it was going to be expensive but still had to do a double take on the menu prices. Beer very good and as we found out later an average price for the area. All in all a very good pub but a bit on the pricey side.

4 Feb 2008 17:49

The White Hart, Tongham

Visited this pub on Saturday 2nd Feb after our brewery trip to Hogsback. Good range of ale on the bar, told that it use to be a rough pub but now vastly improved under new owners. Pleasant atmosphere lunchtime but can't comment on evening trade.

4 Feb 2008 17:39

The Wenlock Arms, Hoxton

On further investigation, strokes chin meaningfully whilst smoking pipe, The Wenlock should disregard the previous 2 comments as our pub has been hit by these two spoilers also. Anonymous posted on our page at 2.24 and then on yours at 2.26 talking about Totty ???. Two pubs in the top five being hit by the same two posters!!!! Conspiracy, come on BITE do something about the spoilers, it ruins this website.

BTW have rated your Pub as Don't Know as have never been there but keep up the good work as you're not one of the top pubs for nothing.

21 Sep 2007 00:48

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

In response to Lord Lucan the website works fine if you're using Internet Explorer however if you're using another Browser, I think Firefox has been mentioned to me, then it does tend to mix up the format of the website. Have mentioned it to the company that did the website for me but am still waiting for a reply. Thanks for letting us know though.

On another subject funny how we manage to get to Number 1 in the top 40 one day and then receive 2 bad comments the next mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm is there possibly a connection.

20 Sep 2007 16:53

The King Street Tavern, Southsea

As a landlord I don't get to get out much so don't make it to many pubs but when I do I try to venture to a couple, the King Street being one of them. A good range of ale on plus unusual lagers, a good pub with enthusiastic??(have I spelt this right) landlord and landlady. Keep it up the area needs more pubs like this.

8 Aug 2007 00:29

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Did I mention that Hole Hearted is named after this pub;)

8 Aug 2007 00:21

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

May I be the first to congratulate Oakleaf Brewery for winning Silver Medal, with Hole Hearted, at the Golden Beer Category at this years GBBF. Hole Hearted, incidentally :), is named after this pub.

The Four Chestnuts, Chichester

Why has this pub only got a 6.4 rating. Last pub we visited on our little crawl only ruined by the fact that Engeeeeerland couldn't score against Israel, rubbish....the football not the pub.

Landlady rushed of her feet, seems to be being let down by some staff who can't turn up on time. Beer excellent food excellent landlady even came up to ask us if we had all ordered food as some couldn't get to the bar and be served.

Clientel of all age groups and all very friendly, no hint of trouble which you may associate with pubs showing footy, Sussex pub of the year 2007, well done.

The Maypole Inn, Yapton

The high point for many on our little jolly to Dark Star and back especially Big Baz who was almost crying when he walked through the door he loves it so much. Think I had a couple of pints of Betty Stoggs but memory starting to fade at this point. Top notch pub, top notch regulars. Visit if you can

The Buckingham Arms, Shoreham by Sea

Good pub when we visited on a Sat afternoon, very busy with what seemed a varied age group of regulars. All very friendly, good pint of Landlord and staff seemed friendly enough. Good to see The Burrell over the road is being knocked down, when I worked in Shoreham 15 years ago the burrell was the place to be seen if you wanted a fight.

The Duke Of Wellington, Shoreham by Sea

Another pub from Dark Star, again beers are top notch but when we visited conversation was kept to a minimum by the TV blaring out cricket commentary accompanied by the landlords impersonation of the umpire every time a 4 or 6 were scored mmmmmm! Not sure if decor has been finished or not

The Stand Up Inn, Lindfield

Visited after our Brewery Trip to Dark Star on 24/3/07. Lovely open fire, staff seemed genuinely pleased to see us, no smoking throughout FANTASTIC,Beer fine and wide range of ciders which pleased our one and only cider drinker. Decor a bit too modern for my liking though but apart from that a top notch pub.

Town House, Southsea

Closed, owners keep on trying to turn it into flats, only amount of time before palms are greased.....who said that...not me:)

The Sir Robert Peel, Southsea

Long Closed, not sure but think it's been bulldozed

The Jubilee Tavern, Southsea

This pub has now closed apparently. The loss of another Pompey pub I'm afraid:(

The Barley Mow, Southsea

Have heard through the grapevine that The Barley is going in to the 2007 Good Beer Guide, well deserved in my honest opinion. Pub been taken over by landlady Judy recently probably the most organised person I've met in the trade, if I was half as organised as Judy I'd be doing well. Well worth a visit:)

The India Arms, Portsmouth

The India is reopening this coming weekend as a Tiffin Bar, small Indian bites apparently. Looks promising from the outside, decor improved dramatically. Well worth a visit just to see the improvement in the place.

The India Arms, Portsmouth

The Hole in The Wall, Southsea

Have been the landlord of this pub now for the last 2 1/2 years and have always used this excellent site to see if we're doing the right things or not. Have never felt the need to post a comment until now though, how did we go from a 9.7 to a 7.1 rating, number 1 in the top 40 to not even in the top 40 overnight. Have seen the new number 1 The Red Lion at Snargate has had the same problem and doubtless other pubs the same.

Please can someone explain as I'm at a loss
