This Pub is open again!
Don't know who paddysmudge is / was but his is the wailing, discordant song, of all failed, wanna-be, but ain't got the personality, non-publicans all over this country.
Pubs only get supported when they are run by a real publican who has the talent to entice custom through the door and then give a reason for the custom to return.

We stayed at the Star for five nights last July, after which I sent in a recommendation to B.I.T.E.
Sue, Mick and Matt had not been in place for long then but were already stamping their mark on the place.
The range of real ales (constantly changing) of four or five were all excellent, Mick is a very attentive cellarman and exacts a very high standard, and the bar was well stocked with a wide range of wines, spirits and lagers.
They were blessed with a very capable Chef (Gary?) who consistently turned out high quality food of a broad range of styles and ten months on I've yet to experience a better breakfast.
Sue, always cheerful and helpful, whether in person, over the phone or via email, exacts the same high standards and attention to detail in the bar, restaurant and accommodation areas.

A bit more, (hopefully useful), information about this Pub.
They do not cater for anyone under 14, this is apparently a decision taken based on the size and layout of the place and I can understand the reasoning.
A Freehouse, it is not open Sunday evenings or Mondays (Usually open B/Hols but best to phone and check)
They do not accept Cards
Very much a traditional country Pub.
I was wrong in my last review in saying that most of the tables are set for dining, they are only set-up when reserved, I'm told that drinkers do not get asked to move to allow for diners.
The Dobermann has a relaxed feel, it dos'nt do fast food, but good substantial, genuinely home cooked food which is very reasonably priced.

It's changed hands again!
Been taken over by Gary and Natalie who have resided in the village for a few years, they have experience of the licensing trade and it shows,
Gary understands what being a landlord is all about, realises that they don't call it the hospitality trade for nothing, also seems to understand that success is dependant on the 'Guv'nor' getting his back into it and not on lording it over staff that have been ill trained at best, and that punters like to see & hear someone who has a grasp of his job.
Early days, but they seem to be getting the much needed support (by earning it).
I wish them every success.

A lovely thatched Pub, long and low, (very, very low in some rooms) never had the chance to explore it properly, but seems to do a good trade despite being tucked well out of the way, the beer was well kept and the menu looked interesting but alas only time for a swift pint.

It's changed hands, Linda and Sara have gone and so has the atmosphere they created, open all day, open late at weekends, live music, one armed bandits, pool table, happy hour, no wide screen tv yet (but watch this space?).

Oh dear oh dear!
I was correct in my belief voiced in my previous review, the tenants were new and they did'nt reign long.
Visited again recently and what a disappointment, a huge banner outside announcing new management and inviting all to venture in and take a look.
We had booked a table for a Sunday lunch, how I wish we had'nt bothered, drinks served in glasses streaked with the residue of glass wash, pints (?) served with two inch heads, red wine like ice, a bar top sticky with spilt drinks and food that was mediocre at best, and a young lad serving who seemed to think he was giving everyone a treat, and failing miserably.
Good luck with keeping your Pub open Battisford, you need it.

Set in the centre of the tiny village of Mendham close to the attractive Church this place is now open again.
Somebody appears to be spending some money on it, with new signage and a new bar, both of which are very 'Wine Bar' as opposed to 'Country Pub'.
The sign hails it as a 'Restaurant and Bar' which feels a bit pretentious, whilst the bar is a construction of bricks and white wood, which though it looks well made, does nothing for the ambience and for my taste is out of place in this small semi-detached Pub, maybe when the re-fit is complete it will blend a bit better(?)
Three handpumps on the bar but only one operational, this carrying an offering from the Waveney brewery based at the Queens Head, Bungay.
The chap serving when I visited (Landlord?) seemed cheerful and effecient although I consider 1:50p for a pint of Lime & Soda on the rip-off side of steep but perhaps this caused his cheerfulness.

After being under the same stewardship for several years and having had a good reputation during that Landlords tenure, this large and attractive Pub has had a bit of a rough time of late, However just before Christmas 2007 , a young couple took it on and early signs are very encouraging, The guest beers that I have tried have been of a very high standard, the decor is looking brighter and cleaner, and the menu is enticing though not tested as yet.
Good Luck to them.

I last visited this very attractive Pub about thirty(+) years ago, when the beer was served straight from barrels behind the bar, it was a real old drinking pub back then, now its a GastroPub and I am in no way intending this detrimentally, we went there to dine and the food was excellent, the service warm, friendly and relaxed, not always an easy effect to create when running around like a blue arsed fly yourself but in this case admirably done, four of us, three courses each, all selections different, all served very smoothly, Great, and all for about 20 a head.
The beer, Adnams, Not bad, perhaps a wee bit too cold and a great shame that they seem to think that all beer needs to be served as though it should have a chocolate flake stuck in the top,(Sparklers, Ugh!) but there, I make no apology for being a certified, grumpy old man.
There appeared to be a good drinking atmosphere at the bar and the bar staff were attentive and helpful, so I will forgive the transgression.
In all a very enjoyable experience.

Pretty Pub, set just off the corner of the main through road, by the Church, extra parking is available just across the street but I think there is a parking area at the rear accessed by a drive to the right of the pub.
The interior is on two or three different levels and tables are used for dining throughout, used to be very good for food and still seems popular but I have not eaten here for some while so cannot judge.
The Adnams range dominates the cask beers on offer and when I visited the Bitter was a lovely pint, Fresh, Crisp and temperature perfect.
They had an impressive list of wines by the glass displayed on a wallboard in the main bar.
The 'Feel' as opposed to Ambience or Atmosphere was that everyone (staff) seemed very absorbed with themselves, to busy to acknowledge the customers, not just myself, I noticed very little interaction of any kind, the service came over as perfunctory, far too functional, no personality, which is a pity because the building is welcoming and cosy.
One word of warning, if you use the front door and if like me you are a 'Big' Lad the door is split in the middle and only half of it opens readily, its a bit of a squeeze.
28 Jan 2008 22:17
This is an attractive, small Pub at the end of of the village, it looks as though it has known better times but the potential is there for it to be really lovely, inside the bar has two areas separated buy open exposed beams and each area has a fireplace, the area directly inside the door has a working woodburner and a wooden floor, the other side is home to a pool table and dart board with a stone flagged floor, the 'L' shaped bar services both areas, choice of three handpumps GK IPA & Adnams Bitter the third offering, Fullers London Pride, marked as the 'Guest' none of which are unusual in this area but a reasonable choice from a small village pub, the pint of Adnams I sampled was Crisp and Clear but a tad to cold for me.
The bar also carried several of the newer tall font style lager dispensers which I felt created a bit of a barrier in such a small place, but the brightness of the Landlady's smile soon shone through.
The resturant appeared very busy but nothing to report this time regarding the food this was a flying visit.
We arrived just as the soda dispense wotsit decided to throw a wobbly and as the driver wanted a soda and something she was forced to wait, but all credit to the young lady serving, despite being very busy she took time to let us know that we were not forgotten and was charming, friendly and very proffesional.
I don't know if I am correct but I had the feeling that the management was new, the interior was quite stark and lacked personality which was at odds with the girl I took for the Landlady, so I look forward to calling again to see how it shapes up.
14 Jan 2008 21:32
Set in the centre of the village, an attractive building yet nothing out of the ordinary.
I rarely go to this Pub, its just out of my orbit but I called in recently.
Despite a bright and friendly welcome from whom I took to be the Landlady, the inside desperately needs some TLC.
The drinkers at the bar were friendly enough but the landlord seemed to be unsure of his role and did not seem comfortable with it, for me he created the impression that he felt he was doing all a favour and I'm not impressed with someone picking holes in the accomplishments of another, I'm capable of drawing my own conclusions!
The bar used to be bright, clean and well stocked under the last incumbents and the food was very good wholesome fare, which was reasonably priced, the last guy always came over as being very professional.
I cannot comment about the food or its cost now, however the bar is not so well stocked.
6 Jan 2008 18:41
Another of those Lovely old Pubs stuck in the middle of the Suffolk countryside which like others of its type often seem to be struggling to survive, despite being in the middle of a thriving village, its had something of a see-saw exsistence for a few years now but still continues to hang in there.
It has just changed hands again, I popped in on Saturday lunchtime and had a top quality pint of Adnams, interior is Homely and comfortable, the welcome was friendly, lets hope its in for a period of stability.
6 Jan 2008 17:36
Together with friends, the wife and myself had a terrific meal on friday evening last, a young team at front of house, pleasant welcome, proper customer service, (Not as common as it could / should be), the meals, we all agreed, were superb, the beer was excellent and the service was faultless despite a very busy restaurant, highly recommended.
3 Dec 2007 21:00
Very attractive 'Long & Low' Pub on the main street through the village, as you step inside it seems very small but this is deceptive, there is a large garden to the rear with a covered patio area and then a grassed area further back from this, the food is very good 'home' style cooking and the portions are decent, the real ales are adequate, there seemed to be an air of suppressed stress from the staff, whether this is normal I can't say but it would have made the visit more enjoyable had they been more relaxed. The toilets could do with a bit more care.
15 Oct 2007 23:08
A fantastic place to go for a truly special meal, the food is excellent, the service is relaxed and friendly, everything is done without fuss or bother, a friend told me that the beer here was not up to much but that must have been in a past life, I'm not a big fan of Green King I.P.A. but it was a real treat here. I can't speak highly enough of this place.
15 Oct 2007 22:27
Visited this one on Friday 6th. July, arrived at 9 to find the place very busy, mostly diners, asked if we were O.K. for food, no problem, last orders at 9:30, had a pint of the house brew from Wolf, Superb, my friend went for the Adnams and found it excellent, Wife had red wine and was offered a reasonable choice, We were alloted a table and menus arrived before we were settled, not rushed to make our selections but our order was taken within about 5 mins, our meals, all different, arrived within 15 mins, all hot, no delays, everything we needed with no drama or fuss, my Cesar Salad with Char-grilled Chicken was excellent.
In all a very pleasant experience, will certainly call again when this way.
They must have read the previous reviews and have risen to the challenge.
9 Jul 2007 19:48
The Coldham Hall Tavern, Surlingham
No matter how good the beer, food or location may be it certainly does'nt warrant a price tag of 2:00p for a pint of very weak lime & soda from a multi pump, glad I said no to the ice!
I can never work out why some establishments think that ripping customers off equates to sound business sense.
Maybe in this case they think that the punters are on holiday so will not bother to check the prices, or as they may not come back again they consider its o.k. to take them for all they can?
Very very Sad.
30 Jun 2007 16:08
This is the genuine article if you are looking for a pretty little country pub, it looks as though it has been a pub for centuries but apparently used to be the village shop or something.
The outside of the building is rendered and has pargetting depicting the poachers stock in trade, hares, foxes, pheasants etc. and is very attractive and unusual.
The inside, on the Sunday lunchtime that I visited, was busy with a crowd who all seemed to know each other, and had a friendly feel to it, Sunday lunches being served looked really appetising and the beer was grand.
The only drawback is that it is well out of the way, however Cratfield is in the rural heart of Suffolk and the scenery is beautiful.
11 Jun 2007 21:06
They had a small beer festival here a few weeks ago, the beer was in good order and the place had a pleasant atmosphere, the beers were not all that common so that made for added interest, I have also sampled the Sunday lunch, very good.
I have only met Mark but am reliably informed that his partner also works very hard to get this pub a good name.
Good Luck to them both.
11 Jun 2007 20:55
Loud and Vibrant (and thats on the nights without a band, (Fridays and Saturdays)) Staff friendly enough, agree with Quinno, last review, Adnams is well kept but a bit cold. Nothing to really set it apart a run of the mill drinking hole.
4 Jun 2007 23:13
Just heard that the Limeburners should re-open on the eighth of June, Hip Hip Hooray, rumour has it that re-opening should be heralded with a big bash, not sure what exactly but great to hear it has'nt been lost forever.
Good Luck to all concerned!
23 May 2007 19:02
Visited here early eve. on a Wednesday a couple of weeks ago, I like country Pubs that are country Pubs and this certainly fits the bill, if you want glitz and bling, try somewhere else, if you are comfortable with the kind of place that feels like someones home (Which it is!)then this is for you, Lovely drop of Adnams, straight from the barrel, friendly locals, the trade in food was busy and although the Landlord was serving both food and behind the bar he did not neglect his bar custom.
Could maybe do with a bit more identity tied into the name, The Sorrel Horse is better known as the Suffolk Punch, the native draught horse of the county.
28 Apr 2007 09:57
Update on Blaxhall Ship, It has apparently been sold to someone familiar with or local to the area and they have said (on Look East or Anglia T.V. news) that their intention is to bring back regular folk nights and to run it as a local again which is very good news and if they do, I for one wish them every success.
I missed the T.V. news item but am told that it all appeared very positive.
7 Apr 2007 11:02
It might get a bit more custom if it opened regularly.
As I said in my last review, it's off the beaten track, if the owners cannot be bothered to open regularly, why should the Punters bother to waste time, effort and petrol attempting to support it, no wonder they claim its unviable, how the hell can any business be viable if it does'nt open for trade.
I can only assume that Jazper who reviewed on 4-12-2006 slipped through a time warp and experienced the Pub as it was twenty years ago.
14 Mar 2007 22:19
Used to be called the Greyhound but that was several years ago now, a small attractive pub, most of the interior is set for dining but the bar is well stocked and if you just want to enjoy a drink you won't be made unwelcome the Landlady is a treasure and theres usually a few drinkers at the bar who are willing include an unfamiliar face into the conversation, Beer is excellent.
14 Mar 2007 20:11
The Limeburners was closed last year (2006) due to subsidence caused by heavy rainfall, its future is unknown but hopefully her days will not end on such a sad note, missed by many.

The Three Horseshoes, Charsfield
The Horseshoes has been run by Martin and Emma for about two years now and I am biased because it is one of my most frequented Pubs.
Martins beer is always of the highest standard, the choice of guests changes fairly rapidly (too rapidly sometimes), and the selections vary widely in type.
The clientele is eclectic in mix and as the bar is quite small this makes for interesting conversation and banter, a friendly lot though.
Emmas food portions will test the heartiest appetite so be warned if you come to drink don't eat, you won't be able to do both.
A large garden for alfresco drinking in the summer and there's a real fire in winter.
12 Mar 2007 18:23
Hav'nt been here for a while but I get regular updates from a colleague who taunts me with reports of how good the beer is and how Nancy, the landlady, has made yet another cracking selection that is not often available in the area.
The original part of the Pub is a low thatched affair very pretty outside, very low inside, but no worries if you have a headache after visiting, you can be sure it was a low beam and not the beer.
A great little Pub, hard to find but worth the search.
12 Mar 2007 17:45
Found this little Backstreet Gem a few days ago, its just changed hands so its to soon to say what the new landlord has in mind but the beer comes straight from the barrel and when I visited there was a choice of three, if he keeps this facility I wish him all the best.
12 Mar 2007 17:34
Called into this place on a bright Sunday lunchtime at the end of January, a large not unattractive building, the sign beside the A140 said real ales, only had the one (London Pride) but the quality was fine, nobody else in the Pub, the welcome was friendly enough but the staff seemed to be waiting for something to happen but it did'nt, so we left and tried another Pub further on.
12 Mar 2007 17:19
Attempted to visit this Pub a few weeks back, all manner of posters announcing various bands and events outside, but nothing to say that it only opens now and then? apparently its up for sale but this is unconfirmed so watch this space as they say.
12 Mar 2007 17:08
Lovely little country Pub set back from the road with a large car park to the front and a beer garden to the side (and rear?).
Inside there are three bars that are not distinctly separate, and there is a (new I think) resturant behind the left hand bar which looks inviting, have'nt tried the food but the beer is good with a choice of two perhaps three real ales.
Be careful not to trip over the Pub laborador who likes to lie in the sun coming through the windows and door in the morning, and you will recieve a lovely welcome from him but he's very friendly and well behaved.
The walls are covered with racing pictures etc. and a massive pike in a glass case. well worth a slight detour off the A12 to Beccles road.
12 Mar 2007 17:02
Attractive Pub in the centre of a small village, inside the ceilings are quite low, but at six foot did'nt have to duck much, settles and old wooden tables abound giving a pleasant feel to the place, it's quite dark (but not dingy) inside which adds to the atmosphere, three / four ales on offer which apparently change quite frequently, judging by comments overheard, it seems the food is good too, I think there is a garden but did'nt see it this time, although its a little bit out of the way it would be worth a visit.
12 Mar 2007 16:42
Just want to correct my faux pas in my last review, turns out that Sam is in the kitchen the recipient of my thanks for the terrific beer should have been Sara, many apologies Sara.
26 Feb 2007 16:36
I have to say that I am biased here as the Chequers is one of my regulars.
Run by Ron & Deb. for a few years now, when they first arrived Ron went on record as saying that he intended to have a Pub that did food as opposed to a former Pub now Resturant that served beer, He has been true to his word, the beer is always excellent, three or four real ales always available. Mild always available (On draught), not bad for a country pub eh?
The food is great and gets better and better from their young team in the kitchen, good fresh food with sensible portions.
Large patio and a garden at the rear.
26 Feb 2007 16:28
Housed in a large attractive building in the centre of the village, one of Green Kings tie's so only GK beer, but this well kept by a Landlord who seems to know what it takes to be a host, the interior is warm and comfortable, floors slope this way and that, creating an impression of slight inebriation before sampling the wares, high ceilinged with wood beams, probably authentic, large fireplace in first bar (unused?) decorated with agricultural/country bygones, the Landlord was formerly a farm manager, so can probably explain their uses if not obvious,
The food is Good Pub fare, (Lovely homemade chips). There are monthly themed nights which are reportedly well supported.
26 Feb 2007 16:01
The Three Horseshoes, Mole Hill Green
I visited this Pub yesterday and where do I start?
Had it not been for a report in the local rag telling that if one of the new suggestions for a second runway at Stansted went ahead then this pub face's being demolished I would not have known of its exsistence, if this proposal go'es ahead then it will be an act of the most dispicable vandalism.
The building itself is a beautiful thatched place set on the edge of the green, plenty of parking to the side and rear with a large garden on the other side, Inside it truly is a real old world place, BUT GENUINE, small rooms with low beams, set on at least two levels, the darts board, which was getting a lot of use, (nice to see), is on a lower level than the bar and resturant areas.
We had a terriffic Sunday lunch, one of the best I have ever had in a Pub,(Thats quite a few), huge slices of fresh roast beef, lovely fresh vegetables and the apple crumble dessert was a dream.
Unfortunately unable to sample the beer on this occasion (GK IPA & Abbott), watching it being pulled it looked bright and crisp.
I would say that this is a place where the guv'nor and his team have really worked out how to make a success of providing really good food for us grockles and retaining a proper pub for the locals without compromise on either side, the resturant was almost full when we arrived and yet when asked if we could eat there was no hesitation, a table was offered immediately and the whole attitude was of relaxed efficiency, the waitress was polite and courteous with a friendly smile despite apparently being the only waitress, and the guv'nor was a true host and last but certainly not least the Barmaid/Landlady, a more genuine smile from behind a bar I have yet to encounter, very proffessional, extremely attractive and worth a trip from Suffolk just to see her pull a pint, all in all a true all around Gem.
(The Pub & the Barmaid)
When considering the apparently bizzare attitudes of some who venture into running a Pub, I say that it would be a crying shame if people like the team at the Three Horseshoes were to lose their livelihood.
26 Feb 2007 15:33
Called into this Pub a few weeks ago, at first thought I had made a mistake, stepped through the door and saw tins of beans, bread and the like, instead of beer pumps, my mistake this really is a community Pub, it has the village grocer's shop adjoined, not a big Pub but more space than appears at first, with a pool table in a separate room,
seemed a really friendly pub and I want to go back again when I have a driver and try some of the three or four real ales they offer, but the price they charged for a pint of Lime & Soda clearly showed that they where not ripping people off (Less than 50p)!
24 Feb 2007 23:59
I had'nt been into this Pub for about twenty years, until last Saturday, not because there was anything wrong with the pub, over most of that time it seemed in general to have a reasonably good name, but it simply was not in my 'orbit', we popped in to, wet our whistles, just before closing time (3:00) and I enjoyed a decent pint of Black Sheep Bitter, one of the three or four ales on handpump.
The only critisism I can make is that it is not by the sea or river which is all this place needs to make it truly exceptional, it has been decorated with what I call 'Nicotine wash', you know, that normally dire attempt to make a pub feel as though it still has the grime of the nineteeth century hanging on its walls, but here 'it works'! on a bright afternoon it gave the distinct impression that Cap'n Blood or Jim Hawkins might get up from one of the settles and order a pint of 'Jamaicy Rum' or some such.
O.K. maybe I'm going a bit far and maybe in Woodbridge it's more likely to be Captain Pugwash or Seaman Staines but you get the picture.
Can't comment on the food but I think this is one you could have fun in, with the right company.
24 Feb 2007 23:25
Attractive Pub in the centre of the village, visited last about two years ago and intended to go back sooner, comfortable village local, visited again today and although it had changed hands in November last year it appears to have remained a true local.
GK IPA, Adnams Best and Broadside on offer, went for the Adnams, very decent pint, Tried their Sunday roast, excellent!
18 Feb 2007 22:01
This Pub is quite a distance from home, if last Friday night is anything to go by, Boy am I sad about that, toward the end of 2006, news came through that this well thought of country Pub had closed suddenly and that its future looked bleak, (As always when a Pub closes)
I had only been in a couple of times prior to my last visit, but each time it had been well worth the journey, glad to report that the same applies, choice of three real ales, all from different Breweries, intended to try all three but did'nt get past the Wherry, absolutely terrific, smashing young couple at the helm, wish them every success, gave us a warm welcome, Locals friendly, just great, I bet our friends who moved into that area last year will get fedup with us!
18 Feb 2007 21:49
An application for change of use has been made by Adnams, (To housing), application appeared in local paper Week ending 17th./18th. February 2007!??
18 Feb 2007 21:25
We visited the Black Horse on a Sunday a couple of weeks ago, the pub is in the centre of the village, an attractive building that looks more like a house than a Pub, with a large tidy garden.
Arriving at about 12:45, we just managed to squeeze into the large car park, very busy.
I wanted to visit this Pub because it was listed for inclusion in the Good Beer Guide so I was curious, I was not disappointed, the beer was excellent.
The place is very much food orientated, which looked delicious and seemed reasonably priced, and despite the fact that food seems to be the main attraction, several 'regulars' where coming in for a drink and we where not made to feel unwanted in the least, the staff where friendly and polite despite being very busy.
Definately a place I shall return to, but to eat next time.
9 Feb 2007 19:49
The Three Horseshoes, Charsfield
Friendly village centre Pub, Signed off the B1078 Wickham Market Road, Excellent Beer usually Adnams Bitter and a guest, often something a little bit different.
5 Feb 2007 21:13
Visited on a Friday evening in Novemember, Warm and Cosy Pub, Very busy, furnished with comfortable old sofas and chairs, choice of Three real ales, the two I tried, Woodfordes Wherry and I can't recall the other, both seemed a bit tired, nothing actually wrong but lacked that extra zing, maybe they where both nearing the end of the barrel, I would certainly give the pub another visit.
5 Feb 2007 20:56
Visited this Pub late last year, 2006, on a Friday evening arrived about 8:45 x four of us, the place was full, Broad mix of clientele Young and Old, all very friendly made a real effort to let us to the bar find somewhere to drink etc. Barmaid very jolly, The beer (Chas. Wells Bombardier, Cask) very good, Decor fresh, country pub, Seemed the sort of Pub that would be good to have as a local, the food Menu sounded interesting and reasonably priced but was not sampled.
5 Feb 2007 20:44
Happy to report that Lynda, Sam and the Team continue to provide all that the previous reveiwer listed, I visited them last weekend and enjoyed a terrific pint of Woodfordes Wherry (Thanks Sam), also on offer locally brewed Earl Soham Victoria another crackin' pint.
So many beers, so little time!
3 Feb 2007 11:42
The current owners recently had an application for change of use turned down (Jan. 2007) it appears the planning committee did'nt agree with their claim that the Pub was not viable, THREE CHEERS! for Suffolk Coastal Council.
Several years back I used this little gem frequently, a Pub full of history and character and with the right stewardship could no doubt be again, the village of Blaxhall is small and of the beaten track but this pub was always busy despite this, offering good beer, great banter, decent reasonably priced food and regular Folk sessions, as I said a Gem just waiting for someone to polish it back to life.

The Rose, Crowfield
This Pub is currently closed! 20-8-2011
