Well done and a big THANK YOU to Blue Scrumpy for posting an up to date review! I'm on my way there next. The Gladstone is well worth a visit too. TonyMitch - 14 Aug 2019 19:47 |
The Royal William was our favourite pub of the day. It was packed with people watching the football on a number of TVs inside and out. Unfortunately, we witnessed a goal, which rather spoilt our visit and the sheer number of people detracted from what looks like it might be a very enjoyable place to visit on quieter days. The ale selection is listed on slates to the side of the bar. Greene King IPA is the regular ale. Guests were Green Jack Albion Mild, Excelsior & Trawlerboys, Nethergate Masterpiece, Mauldon's Micawber's Mild & Mole Tap, Oakham JHB & Star Wing Stain Glass Blue. Ciders are listed on a separate board - Snail's Bank Orchard Dry, Fruit Bat, Strawberry & Lime Cider, Rhubarb Cider & Pig Squeal, Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Two Trees Perry & Burnard's Norfolk Scrumpy & Oaky Dokey. I'd loved to have had more. But, my Norfolk Scrumpy was enjoyable. In fact, these were the first real ciders I'd found in Suffolk on the day. A very good pub that warrants a return visit some time in the future. blue_scrumpy - 2 Jun 2019 17:52 |
After a short stroll from the Kings Arms we arrive at the 2nd & final pub in town to appear in 2016 GBG. On arrival we are met with an empty pub and only the landlord at the bar, he greets us fondly while we peruse the list of ales available that’s pinned up on the wall. Today's selection is from 10 ales with all beers served direct from the barrels which are stored in a cold room directly behind the bar. We stay for several beers and work our way through Mighty Oak’s Flying the flag @ 3.7%, Buffy's Nine X @ a whopping great 10.0% & Nethergates Perle Anniversary @ 4.4% The Royal William is a cracking pub with plenty of character and good banter from the landlord, bar maid and a few elderly punters. The TV was on mute with the radio playing over it, pies & pasties are the food choices and supplied fresh by a local pie maker, served with lashings of pickle…a bargain at £2.50 and a good belly filler. St Georges flags hanging outside the pub as it was St George Day when we visited. Out of the 4 pubs we visited in one day this was by far the best….9/10 for me. lezford - 1 Jun 2016 14:51 |
Great back street pub. Very quiet but received a warm welcome from the landlady who talked us through the many ale options. Pints were all well kept. Locals seemed friendly too, offering recommendations and keeping me up to date with the Ashes. Ale straight from the barrel. Will definitely return when next in the Stow. In the 80's this pub used to serve the best pint of Greene King Abbot in the area, its still a cracking back street local, serving only sandwiches by way of food, but now a free house serving 2 ales during the week and upto 4 at the weekend, all by gravity from a stillage in a little room behind the bar. Long may this fantastic establishment reign..... try also the newly opened Kings Arms right outside the station, 8 local beers, 2 ciders, Brandon and Harwich brewery beers when I visited yesterday.
