Ale was in good nick but on my weekday, early evening visit, it was rather characterless. 5/10.

6 York Brewery casks.
A re-tick for me on a Thursday tea time mainly because I wanted to try York's seasonal ale Snowflake @ 3.7% and it didn't disappoint.
Including the Snowflake there are 4 York Brewery ales, 2 guests and 1 real cider on.
Service on this visit wasn’t as good as the barman barely raised a smile. It was half busy but a bit too quiet for the time of the day.
A nice enough pub but there are better close by.
Tried this pub before open mike started and had a York Terrier £3.15 was a good price and certianly done the trick. It's a stripped pub with the usual wooden floors and stools etc. Nice small garden at the rear. Light and airey bar.
Popped in on Saturday after watching Plymouth Argyle's dismal 0-0 draw at Bootham Crescent. 3 ales from the York Brewery on plus several guests. Had a pint of Centurion's Ghost as well as one from the Tiny Rebel brewery. Sadly the Purple Moose beer went off just as I ordered a pint. Probably the best pub nearest to the football ground if you're going to a match, if you exclude the supporters' bar at the ground.
A York Brewery pub with a range of their own beers, plus guests. The pub is one big room with a conservatory at the rear. York Ales were Yorkshire Terrier, Guzzler, Velo City Off The Wall & Centurion Ghost Ale. Guests were Tring Wild Boar, Downton Route 66 & Amber Ales Delicious Chocolate Orange, which was just as the name suggested!
This is a York Brewery Tap pub. Good range of their beers available and a couple of guests.
I'm not the biggest fan of York's ales as I find them all a bit creamy....the pint of Yorkshire Terrier was no exception, decent but creamy.
This pub appeared in the 2013 GBG but hasn't made the 2014 edition, unsure why but it's not up to the standard of the others I've visited this weekend, decent but not outstanding.
Worth a look if you like York Brewery ales and its in a good circuit location but personally I've been in much better pubs in York today.
Service houwever was excellent.
A nice pub with a friendly staff. Although as there were not too many customers perhaps they were just grateful for someone to chat to! Bare floorboards and a conservatory out the back. The pub is light and airy, especially when compared to the Guy Fawkes pub near the Minster. Had a nice pint of Guzzler. Minster Ghost and Terrier were also available.
Went in here before the football and it was busy with both home and away fans mixing freely. Had a couple of pints of Terrier which were excellent. Shame about the match!
A nice looking central pub where we had Guzzler and Ghost from York Brewery. I do worry that a pub only selling one brewery's beers in city where the choice of local micros is amazing is the right stance to be. Like the Yorkshire Terrier, the other York Brewery pub that we tried, it was dead quiet.
Popped in during a work trip to York last week. The Mare is on a strip alongside some pretty decent alternatives, but I enjoyed my pint of Guzzler and I liked the glass frontage of the place which - similar to the same brewery's Last Drop Inn - creates a light and spacious feel. Recommended.
Busy pub good selection on stuck to Oyster Stout 2 out of the 3 staff were chatty and friendly would make a good local if i lived in York
Mixed clientele of tourists and locals. Part of the York Brewery and has a selection of the Harviestoun (Scottish brewery) beers on: Bitter & Twisted (2.90), Shiehallion (4.8% lager) and Number of the Beast.
A Quality pub. Excellent atmosphere, great choice of beer. What more do you need?
Enjoyed a couple of good pints here last Saturday about 5pm, Centurions Ghost was my favourite. Already quite busy when we left an hour later.
This has the appearance outwardly of a traditional, potentially stuffy sort of pub but nothing of the sort once indoors - the decor was surprisingly light and white, and whilst that doesn't always work, in this context it seemed to be appropriate and there was a convivial, airy feel to the bar area where a genuinely mixed clientele were busying themselves on beginning their Saturday night shenanigans. It was a place where one could happily go as a couple, with mates, or even on one's own as inevitably one wouldn't remain alone for long.
Ale-wise, it was the trusty beer guide that got us here and it was deserved: a thorough spread of sound cask beers (I should say many more enticing and unusual than just Guzzler which can be found anywhere - pint of Plum Porter, anybody?), that went down a treat. Punters and staff were equally friendly and we received the sort of bantered-up reception that one longs to get in say London pubs, but all-too-often leaves the premises without. A couple of packets of scampi fries kept the impending hunger pangs at bay and enabled more quality beer to be quaffed. Sadly we had to move on but had it not been for the surfeit of other worthy pubs nearby needing our attention, all three of us could quite easily have camped out in the 3 Legged Mare all evening, which in itself says a lot.
Have to agree with everything good said about this pub. It's the first place I choose to visit when in York, mainly to sample York Brewery's ales, especially Guzzler, which is top-class. Well-kept beers and friendly bar staff. An excellent place to be.
This pub has a light airy feel that gives it an almost continental atmosphere, and its frontage is no longer the lurid blue depicted in the accompanying photograph above. Good, friendly, attentive, young bar staff added to the ambience.
On offer was Edwin Taylors Extra Stout from Banks & Taylor at 2.95, York Brewery Scrum Down & Centurions Ghost, Burton Bridge Golden Delicious & Knot Brown Ale. Again, no music but the gentle hubbub of conversation made for a lovely relaxing atmosphere.
7/10.
Visited in December 2010 during the very snowy weather, went in 3 times during our stay (we did not take much persuading), having had the Terrier in a Cirencester pub was keen to try again on its home turf and it did not disappoint - the Guzzler was a firm favourite for my wife. Sampled the Constantine and Centurion Ghost as well.
Staff very friendly on each visit and had time to talk. Excellent atmosphere and well a worth a visit.
Good location for this wonderful little pub. Had a pint of Yorkshire Terrier and stood in the small beer garden with the smoker in our group. There is a replica of a Three Legged Mare (a device used to hang 3 peope at once) at the back of the garden.
Well worth checking out.
Marvellous place. Has the feel of a continental bar, and none the worse for that. York brewery ales, some interesting bottled stuff and Pilsner Urquell on tap, as well as a couple of guest beers. Staff and locals were very welcoming - we were there on quiz night. Nice location too - the West doors of the Minster is just up the street.
I damn well hope you do take my thoughts seriously! Yes...a grand pub, with a well kept range of York brewery and guest beers. Very friendly and knowledgable staff, but also an interesting range of spaces from quiet gloom to a morning sunny spot, where you will hear the Minster bells. True, the place has a non-pub feel, perhaps more continental really...should really be allowed to spread tables onto the pedestrian street, but hey, this is England!
Situated close to York Minster, the Three Legged Mare is one of 3 York Brewery pubs in the City Centre.
Externally resembling a shop rather than a traditional pub, the interior is a not unpleasant mix of traditional and modern, but with an overall feel that is perhaps more continental caf bar than a traditional British pub.
Outside a blackboard tells us that the pub was CAMRA York Pub of the Season in Autumn 2008. It promises us a friendly welcome and - at the date of my visit in late June - was proudly announcing itself as a football free zone.
The main bar contains a number of photos of old York and leads through to a small conservatory and an outside patio. In the conservatory we learn that a three legged mare was a novel form of gallows comprising a horizontal triangle supported by three legs. Its design meant that several felons could be hanged at once. A replica of this may be found in the back garden.
On the real ale front, there's 3 banks of 3 pumps. Beers on from the York Brewery were the usual 4 - Yorkshire Terrier, Centurion Ghost, Guzzler and Constantine. Also on from York Brewery were York Mild plus Wonkey Donkey, the latter of which is promoted as unique to this pub. Guest beers were from Tring and Castle Rock. York Brewery beers were generally priced at being between 2.60p and 2.80p. The Yorkshire Terrier was in good form. The pub is in the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for 2010.
The staff here were exceptionally attentive and helpful and, on my visit, were going way beyond the call of duty in helping a group of irritating and demanding tourists with limited English language skills, find their way to the brewery for one of the brewery tours.
This is a good place in the City Centre for sampling the wares of the York Brewery.
Great location, friendly bar staff, good range of beer, nice decor (more modern cafe bar than traditional pub). Prices were a tad high, but considering the location you can't really complain.
If you've just done the Minster stairs, this is a cracking place to get refreshed!
I prefer bright, clean and airy to dim and dingy, and this pub fits that bill. Excellent choice of well kept ales and good selection of food, though I did not try this. Close to York Minster and the Art Gallery, and well worth a visit.
York Brewery's flagship pub in the city. It's just beneath the Minster in a prime tourist location, and makes the most of it. Inside, the one long room is split into two main areas, the bar at the front and a rear area. It's pretty modern, open-plan with mood lighting and a mixture of seating- somewhere inbetween a bar and a pub. Always packed with a mixed crowd for good reason, as the real ale selection is excellent- 4 York Brewery beers plus a strong showing from Titanic microbrewery on my last visit-all in good form. It's not overly traditional but is worth visitng for the beer range- then you can pop over the road to the highly traditional Sam Smiths pub The York Arms. Will be returning.
Visited last summer. Can't fault the beers at all, not surprising as it's owned by the local brewery! Constantine, Guzzler and Wonky Donkey were all sampled. There was also a new brew to coincide with the Ashes test series available as well as several non York brewery ales. Other than a group of tourists and a few mates of the barstaff there weren't many people present. A light and airey place it was ok but there are better places in York I'd go to first. The name of the pub refers to a device that could hang three criminals at the same time!
Good selection of ales this visit, and we found a table beside the spiral staircase down to the toilets. Both York ales and guests available, and we enjoyed the Summer Wine Treason and York Wonkey Donkey.
York brewery seem to do a very good job with their pubs, this does have a cafe type atmosphere, but it is comfortable and the beers are very decent, with the usual York fare plus guests. I like the place.
Good York Brewery Pub. Nice feel as it is a "new" pub but does have a traditional feel to it.
I'm inclined to agree with the previous reviewer's 'tearoom vibe' comment. It is a light, airy place, the exact opposite of my idea of a cosy pub. A large single room with the bar on the right. Beyond the bar is a conservatory and a small walled beer garden. Nine pumps, serving York and Milestone beers. From the York brewery I saw Terrier, Ashes, Wonky Donkey (the house ale) and Centurion's Ghost. I had a pint of the Terrier, a light, golden beer which was okay, followed by a pint of the Ghost, a porter type beer which was better. It's an okay pub but not one I would necessarily hurry to again.
Almost at tearoom vibe to this pub.A quiet atmosphere and a nice place to watch people walking by.range of beers available.perhaps ideal for an afternoon drink whilst rambling around York,as opposed to a destination pub in the evening.
A York brewery pub which sells their full range (including the unique to the pub Wonkey Donkey) along with two guests.
Was only in for a short while whilst Mrs Quinno disappeared off to the nearby shop for an emergency birthday present but was there long enough to appreciate my pint of Centurion's Ghost, polite service by the barmaid and observe a group of American tourists doing a cheese and ale tasting session.
The interior is nice and new without being sterile and it's proximity to Yorkminster means it's an essential stop if nearby. Cracking place.
The slightly showy demeanour doesn't sit all that easily with what styles itself as a beer-and-beer-only York Brewery house. Hardly matters though, as being such an affiliate means the ale itself is top-notch. Give me the beer garden over the 'tasteful' interior, and that will more than do me
York has many good pubs and because I liked the Wonky Donkey so much I didn't get to see as many of the others as I might.
I was in there on the 25th 26th 27th of Feb although on the last two visits I rationed myself and my wife to two drinks so that we could go on elsewhere.
No music, no TV, just people talking - brilliant.
Oh yes, the beer was topnotch as well, Constantine and Strong Blond being the favourites for me and and draught Peroni for the missus.
In a city full of great pubs, always worth a visit for quality York ales and decent guests.
Late review from November and another pub always on my list for when I visit. Had 2 Steamin' Billy beers both in brilliant condition and at a much better temperature than the other York pub - Last Drop Inn.
From the outside this place looks like a cafe. Inside it is very modern but tastefully decorated with natural woods & some brewing memoribilia. Heavy emphasise on real ales with York Brewery being well represented. I had a few pints of Guzzler & my partner had a fruit beer that was also very good. Well worth a visit.
Reliable pub serving the York brewery range plus a few interesting guests in addition. Bar staff knowledgeable and appear to know and love their beer. Always worth popping in to see whats on offer.
Great pub and fun quiz night. Try the Wonky Donkey- very nicely done!
Good selection of York Brewery ales including some lagers.
Worth a stop in for sure!
Absolutely love this place and will visit it everytime i come to York.
Unusual decor, but works quite well as a venue. A good range of York Brewery beers, as well as some Fruit Wines, which went down well on the Saturday night, but wrote off the best part of Sunday morning !
Great pub with excellent selection of Yorkshire beers. Good blues guitarist when I was there
Great local beers, awful wine selection. (I guess it is a Yorkshire Brewery pub though! What better way to make you sample their brew?)
Another great York brewery pub serving a good selection of guests alongside their own fine beers. Enjoyed a York seasonal and an Oldershaw stout.
Best bar staff of the York brewery pubs, this pub used to be really smoky so has probably improved no end in light of the ban. Nice selection of guests to back up York brewery's own quality products.
Very well done. Very nice selection of guest ales and very helpful waitstaff. Of course, the York Brewery selctions are excellent! Can get pretty busy given its locale to the Minster, but you can sit outside. Staff frowns on those who wander around the 3-legged mare outside, however, as I found out! They were very polite nonetheless and I resumed with my normal battery of pints afterwards!
Great place. The beer was wonderful and it's a nice place. Well worth a visit.
A town centre pub serving excellent York brewery ales plus guest beers. It can get busy with its location but you can get some reasonable priced food here. Well worth a visit.
Nine handpumps dispense beers from the York Brewery plus guests. Don't expect plush seating and the beers are a touch expensive but you'd expect that in this part of the city. Deservedly popular.
Ah, the Wonkey Donkey - despite being a York Brewery pub it does actually sell an impressive range of guest beers and has an impressive selection of bottles as well (including Chimay, hic!). Better still, despite being in the centre of York and a spit from the Minster, it doesn't get stupidly busy.
Given that it sells a fantastic selection of Belgian (and some German) beer, that's enough to get two thumbs up from me ;-)
One of my favourites in York for an after work pint or two. Quiet, modern and clean, with York Brewery's great beers, and guests.
Clean, comfortable, and friendly efficient service with a great range of real ales. The York Brewerys "Guzzler" and "Stonewall" were in excellent form. You really must visit this boozer whilst in York.
I believe that the pub scenes from The Crying Game were filmed in here,..hence the name...Or was it the Overly Encumbered Moose?,..Oh i dunno,..anyway, yeah good service and friendly atmosphere.
This has to be one of my favorite pubs, known as The Wonkey Donkey the beers is always excellent, not only selling York Brewery beer. Lancaster Brewery Murrays Vanguard?, Eccleshall Slaters as well as Yorkshire Terrier, Guzzler and of course Wonkey Donkey. Bar staff wouldn't stop talking but that was okay a friendly pub, a few pints and the toilets are down stairs so becareful. Theres a piano in the bar does anyone ever play it. EXCELLENT.
Tried a few of the beers here and they were all of reasonable standard. The enthusiasm of the chap at the bar was particularly infectious.I Like the metal spiral staircase-although a few more pints may have brought a few problems....Its great to have an addition,to the already impressive, pubs of central York.
Good range of York Brewery beers (obviously) and a nice and clean pub, enough wear and tear to make if feel homely rather than a sterile chain pub.
The bar staff were really friendly and the beer was excellent (Stonewall). Made us start a mini crawl to the other York Brewery pubs in York..
I think this place has a lot going for it, and for me at any rate consistently serves up great beers and decent food. I wouldn't describe it as sterile. A word to the wise - make use of the disabled lavvy facilities at ground level rather than negotiate the somewhat scary spiral staircase (oooph, nice bit of alliteration there, Ken)
Visited 11 Jun 05. This is rather a clean almost sterile pub, that I would normally keep away from. The BIG plus is that it is one of 3 outlets for York Brewery. Between the two of us, we went through the range, every one was in excellent condition.
My recommendation, and Postiebob isn't wrong, is Centurion's Ghost.
Nevermind the tourists coming in (myself included), what I found amusing was the number of choristers and clergymen dashing in for a quick pint. Maybe a life in the church isn't so bad.
Had a couple of pints of Centurian Ghost ales at 5.4% and 2.40 a pint it certainly hit the spot, friendly but quiet on a sunday afternoon but thats how I like it.
Five adjectives: New, bright, micro-brewry, clean, and nodding-to-tradition
One of two York Brewery houses in central York, and though new this pub still exudes character and offers up a fine variety of hand pumped micro-brews. The name three legged mare refers not to a horse, but to an ancient garrot designed to hang three at a time!
Very friendly; its location a stones throw from York Minster ensures that it will attract tourists, and as an outlet of the York brewery the barkeep was keen to elucidate me about the various homebrews on tap. Deserves recognition - so many of the historic pubs in York play so heavily to the tourist that their charm is compromised. This newer pub is a gem.
A great pub, one of the York Brewery fold, that also offers a fantastic variety of beers both guests on the bar and continentals in bottles. You really can't go wrong in here, simple pleasant interior, friendly staff, and a range of drinks to shame other pubs!!!!
