The Prince Of Orange, Ashton Under Lyne

Since this pub has now re-opened, the only beers available when I visited last night were Unicorn and I predict another Riot. The only cider available was boring Strongbow - no Old Rosie or Rosie's Pig, and the guy behind the bar looked at me askance when I asked about them. The "8 real ales" promise never ever materialised and I have a nasty feeling this pub is going to go downhill fast. There were young kids outside banging on the windows and, as usual, hardly any customers. I bet Robinsons wonder why the hell they invested so much money on making the place look so good. There was chewing-gum stuck to the leather of the bench I was sitting on, no music, just Coronation Street on the telly. Very sad to give this place a thumbs down - the Baker's Vaults is a superb place and the Prince of Orange could do with a serious marketing campaign to give it a boost.

The Wheatsheaf, Leyburn

Stayed here for 3 nights recently and found the place to be excellent. The food was second to none, the staff were really friendly and there were 4 local ales on - Black Sheep, Theakstons Best, Jennings Cumberland and Semer Water. Couldn't have asked for a more welcoming and friendly place.

The Wrens Nest, Glossop

If you're looking for somewhere to have a roast and a good pint of real ale, don't bother going to the Wren's Nest. Despite the claims of its designated website, there are no cask ales on at all, although there are two pumps still in situ. I complained about this and the lady behind the bar said they had cask ales on until a couple of months ago and she would bring the website's false claims to the attention of the manager - watch this space. All my friends enjoyed the carvery and the salad and the mac and cheese. Because of the lack of a cask ale, I decided to try an over-priced bottle of craft beer - Three Creatures IPA or something like that, but guess what? Despite it being written about in glowing tones on the menu, they didn't have any of that either. Needless to say, I won't be paying a return visit. There are some great pubs in Glossop, but this ain't one of them.
