A proper pub...no pretence.Quality ale, atmosphere like it used to be(drinkers drinking and conversing)
Superb!!!

This is more like it....Sort of a modern take on a traditional old school boozer c/o Charles Wells/Youngs.
Not full of pimply teens,or hen-stag do's...quite refreshing really!

As mentioned previously, formally a Indie/Alternative decent hangout now sadly transformed into yet another souless pre-club,kiddies watering hole.
No punters over25,no beer,no hope.....pity!

A game of two halves....
Very much a hotel/lounge/brasserie on one side, yet transformed to a living, breathing proper boozer on the other (Public) side!
Top notch St Austell brews plus a couple of guests, superb food and very welcoming to adults/kids/dogs...unlike somwhere a bit closer to the Harbour....!

Perfectly positioned for the tourist traffic, but also keeps a decent pint...the usual Skinners/St Austell suspects.
Found the welcome very friendly, all in all a worthy pit stop!

My personal spot for a quality pint is top of the steps just outside the door surveying the village and the tourist throng...
Cosy, traditional, just what you would expect really...

Always an enjoyable experience in this slightly dishevelled traditional pub...
All the usual Sharp's range in decent nick, but I do find the 'newish' bar a bit overpowering in the context of the weather worn, comfortable surroundings...

It's a question posed every visit to Looe....always en-mass(wife,mates,kids,dogs etc),but where to 'refresh'!?!
Only family friendly/family sized pub with out the scuzzy holiday element or the 'well worn local' look.(Not a complaint mind-but kids etc don't apprieciate beery charm like moi!)
But I struggle with the fact that the food is okayish and the St Austell is purely average compared to others nearby!
Answers on a postcard please...

Compare this to your aveage 'Spoons....
Yup'it's fairly sterile atmosphere, but it's a stylish conversion and the beer selection and condition is very good. All the Sharp's range, their own Skinner's pint plus a few others....
Food is normal fare, but as a benchmark for what a Weatherspoon's could and should be,look no further....

Back in the day, your choice was here or the Hog's/Druids,for an evening out but six/seven years on...still pretty much the same!
Still a 'studenty' place, beer still ok-Hobgoblin, Adnams and another usually in decent condition.But...if money could/would be invested then should be the alehouse of choice!
Ample outside space, dingy, well worn interior which personally I like...and for which reason alone I'll still pay homage and return everytime I'm let out to play!

I've put this off for long enough...
Compared to my home town's other 'spoons, this is the ONLY choice.
'Tis a bizarre glass fronted office space and wins no beauty prizes and
as pointed out earlier, avoid entirely at night over the weekend, but weekdays, afternoons etc is fine!
Food as you imagine is exactly the same as all chains, bland but fairly ok for microwaved burgers etc.
Beer tends to be more than adaquate...in fact the whole reason I'm adding this scribe, todays gems were Salopian Prohibition and Cotleigh Buzzard plus Westons Cider on draught.Last week was Brentwood Spooky Moon....all were in fine condition, staff knew what they were doing and the punters 'normal'!Belive me it's a relief compared to the usual town flotsam and jetsam...

From the Britannia at one end to the Eagle at the other....don't waste your time with any establishment in- between!
A good pint,Tribute,DoomBar and Rev James on draught, served well.Resonable grub, decent garden, a varied selection of patrons , live music and a Sunday evening Northern Soul bash-all of a better quality than the rest of the area!
I strongly approve....

Probably the only reason to venture 'over the hill' to the land that time forgot... Yes,it seems like an Indian resturant...but,quality beer, nice food and a pleasent ambience...not the usual Medway scuzz pit!
And virtually next door to my kids fav shop(I Dig Dinos)....a total bonus!

The Golden Lion, Putney Bridge
rProper 'match day' pub....decent mix of locals, away fans, office workers and the like.
L.Pride not of the best quality, but saving grace is the large garden....seems to treble the size of the place.
Outside bar and grill a nice touch for avoiding the melee inside...burgers ok for 2,just a pity it's such a larger driven pub...!

The Eight Bells, Putney Bridge
Probably the pub of choice in this area.
As pointed out earlier, can be classed as an 'away' boozer on match days, but locals decent bunch, worth visiting no matter whom you support and as tucked a little bit off track(Between tube and park) keeps the moronic element away!
Think it's a HogsBack Brewery pub,so the T.E.A. is pleasing....

Was/Tried to be know as a 'foodie' persons pub...but,food not really up to par with the local competition.
That said, always serves a local brew...had Nelson 'Pieces o' eight' last visit and Westerham 'Summer Pearle' today plus Biddenden cider and a blast from my past... Flowers IPA on pump!
I must admit I rather like this place,it has charm and character in amidst the housing estate expansion of Bearsted/Roseacre.
Given half a chance it could yet return to it's rightful place as the epicentre of the estate!

The Hare and Hounds, Maidstone
Still a bit rough around the edges, but I've quite warmed to the 'new' image!
The focus is more on 'entertainment' with live bands over the weekends.
Only 2 of the 4 pumps on during my visit,Robinson's Tit for Tat being the pick.
Worth the deviation when the bands are on....

Takes me back to youth, many a misspent evening wasted in here....
Still looking a bit tired and shabby, even after the interior has been turned round and spruced up.Very much still a 'locals' pub...not unfriendly, but still not overly atmospheric.
Only one pump...Bombadier at a pocket streching 3.15 a pint...in fair condition tho'!
Nice bit of outside space for the kids to play in and catch the sun with a beer.
Most confess it was journey down memory lane I enjoyed taking...
5 Jul 2009 18:10
I remember when this 'Mock tudor'Whitbread/Costa coffee/Beefeater/Premier Inn had 'heart and soul'as a community pub....
A restaurant with a bar as an afterthought.Has two pumps both serving Spitfire (In good nick tho'!)to a clientel that consists of business travellers, pensioners and office staff...

The Rifle Volunteers, Maidstone
Like drinking in your Nan's front room...but thats the charm!
Superb Goacher's on offer,Silver Star/Fine Light and Mild plus Hooolies for you Lager boys! Nothing else....
If you can 'enjoy' the ambience you possibly won't find a better pint in town...try for yourselves and keep this establishment alive!
1 Jul 2009 17:19
A pleasing 'green oasis' in the town centre!
Splendid beer garden/back garden affair,Rabbits for the kids,Table Footie for the 'bigger' kids!
Decent pint of Courage Best and Bombadier on pump.
Very handy function room for those social occasions...started to have live music too!
Worth seeking this one out!
1 Jul 2009 17:11
Nestling in the green folds of the North Downs.A picturesque tile and weatherboarded 'restaurant'!
Ideal for walkers and horse people requiring sustinance but as a pub.....I'll let you decide for yourselves!
All Shep's ale off on my visit...MB/Spitfire and Oyster!
26 Jun 2009 11:14
As always full of the dregs of my fair town...
No guests on(As usual!),loads of coming soon pump clips ,but(And this is a biggy...)the Pedigree was remarkably drinkable for 1.75!
Anyway you pays your money, you takes your choice with a 'spoons!
20 Jun 2009 20:22
Nice 'pit-stop' enroute to Hastings.
Charming 'proper' pub with bonus kids play area.(Perfect for my tribe!)
Five pumps, only 3 on when i visited tho'...Sussex,Summer Lightning and Pedigree.
Food usual pub faryre.Sunday roasts come recommended and did look very handsome!
Will pass through more than once or twice this summer....!
14 Jun 2009 21:26
Untroubled by time or change....
Fairly cramped, dingey and walls plastered with horsebrasses and tat...just like a 'real' pub should be!
Harvey's Sussex,Master Brew and Greene King IPA on my visit, resonable quality pint.
An honest village 'local'!
12 Jun 2009 18:40
The Swan on the Green, West Peckham
Pricey,yet stylish food...
Quality own microbrewery ale,Cygnet deffo the pick of the 5 on!
Picture postcard village green/Churchyard location....
One establishment not to miss!
12 Jun 2009 18:32
A pleasant change in the sea of drabness and 'novelty' pubs and bars in Maidstone...
Sampled both the food(Lunchtime menu, usual 'pub' farye.Nicely presented, plentiful and fair priced.) and the ale- Four out of Five pumps on,not the best pint quality ever but 'REAL BEER' in a friendly establishment......
That's all I want!!!

The Red Lion, Weymouth
I can only concur with previous postings...went to get a pint while the 'better half' browsed in Quay.Only the surly landlord eating lunch. No other customers...'No dogs in 'ere' bellowed the Irish brouge over his lunch.Sorry mate! Only wanted a pint outside but in that case I'll move on!
