The Beer Engine, Newton St Cyres

What a find ! Setting, food and beers all excellent. I had one of the Daily special meals - cold meat platter - and it came in 5 minutes, excellent value.
The 4.3 Piston ale is chocolatey and addictive !

The Blisland Inn, Blisland

Got this through The Good Beer Guide. Wonderful beer, food, and setting.

The Ryeworth Inn, Charlton Kings

A great pub. No Goff's today, but Hook Norton, St.Austell, and the ubiquitous Greene King IPA.
Tries the first two - very good. Super roast beef meal at only 7. Some enterprising meals on The Specials Board.

The Old Fleece, Woodchester

Didn't eat here, just had a drink. It's cosy inside and the beer range was fair. I'd go back because most pubs in Stroud are poor, but it's nothing special.

25 Jan 2008 20:17

The Old Crown, Paganhill

What a finicky lot your reviewers are. This is the best pub within walking distance of Stroud centre - which is not saying much, I agree ! Standard pub grub, yes, but well cooked and good value, while the 3 real ales are sound. I found the service friendly and prompt. This was early Friday lunchtime. I'd stear clear of most town pubs on weekend evenings.

25 Jan 2008 20:13

The Upton Inn, Upton Cheyney

I agree with the previous reviewer. Although the food is a bit more expensive than some in the area, it is good. What I found odd was that they only do waitress service, which means several minutes wait before you even see a menu ! But as the only Badger ales house this far north it's worth as visit.

Craven Arms Inn, Cheltenham

I was told this pub had changed hands and heard of poor reviews on other sites. I went there last week and found it as good as ever. Manager may have been away but the young staff were very friendly, the food and real ale excellent.

25 Jan 2008 20:02

The Old Crown, Kelston

I fully agree with TWG. Everything about this pub is first-rate.

26 Nov 2007 20:07

The Bird In Hand, Saltford

Very conveniently sited next to the Bristol-Bath cycleway. Good food and excellent pint of Abbey Bellringer. Gets very busy.

26 Nov 2007 20:05

The Fountain, Parkend

One of the best pubs in The Forest for ale and food.

26 Nov 2007 19:55

Fountain Inn, Gloucester

I now withdraw its status as the best in the city. It has been eclipsed by another nearby, its beer range is not exciting nor cheap. Still good for food.

26 Nov 2007 19:50

Dick Whittington, Gloucester

Now probably the best pub in town for real ale selection and food. Very busy before rugby games.

26 Nov 2007 19:45

The New Inn, Gloucester

Past its prime but better than it was for some years. I like its beer range and its prices. For real ale it's in my top 5 in a city poor on real ales.

26 Nov 2007 19:43

The Swan Inn, Tockington

Had a friendly welcome at this pub today, with good beer and food.

26 Nov 2007 19:32

Keepers Arms, Quenington

Went there today after a lovely walk along the Coln. What a find ! they actually serve cask-conditioned Boddington's, and the beef curry was one of the best pub curries I've had. Friendly landlord, and the sort of pub you don't fnd much these days - traditional, comfortable, not tarted up.

15 Nov 2006 21:32

The Railway, Charfield

Discovered this pub recently - I think it must be under fairly new management. I was very impressed by the food, friendliness and real ales. Try it.

15 Nov 2006 21:28

The Old Crown, Gloucester

I take back what I posted last year. The last pint of Sam Smith's Old Brewery I had there was ruined by chilling. The clientele on a Saturday lunchtime were a sad bunch. Not much to recommend it now.

15 Nov 2006 21:18

The London Inn, Charlton Kings

I found myself here unexpectedly and had a pleasant surprise. Excellent value food - and that Jouster beer was good.

15 Nov 2006 21:07

The Falcon, Painswick

Gone downhill a bit since I recommended it. Haven't eaten there, but a friend has and he complained - not something he does easily - and the attitude of the waiting staff was awful from his account.

15 Nov 2006 21:02

The Carpenter's Arms, Miserden

under new management early 2006. Little change - they still serve very good Wadworths 6X and Greene King IPA plus a guest. I recommend their lamburgers !

15 Nov 2006 20:59

The Buthay Inn, Wickwar

It's Ok but nothing special.

15 Nov 2006 20:56

Bear Inn, Bisley

Friend tells me the new management is fine - all the old atmosphere and good ales, with a much wider menu.

15 Nov 2006 20:53

The Vine Tree Inn, Randwick

I used to go here a lot many years ago, so was disappointed to find it closed on Tuesday lunchtime.
Shan't go back, given the beer range. Sadly, most of the pubs within a couple of miles seem to be shut at lunchtimes too.

22 Aug 2005 00:00

The Tunnel House Inn and Barn, Coates

I had had so many good reports of this place, but I was disappointed when I went there. I couldn't even read the menu board, but what I could read didn't meet my taste. It was heaving on a midweek lunchtime and had been modernised so much that the interior has lost its character. Nice location outside, yes.

21 Aug 2005 23:55

The Seven Springs, Seven Springs

I agree that the food is "pile it high and sell it cheap" and the beer range is uninspired. But I'd rate it at 6.

21 Aug 2005 23:50

The Royal Oak, Prestbury

Went there a second time this week and it's still excellent. Their fish pie, and squid and chorizo salad are very well presented. Delighted to find their guest beer was Timothy Taylor's Best bitter - a change from the usual choice of Landlord.

21 Aug 2005 23:48

The Kings Head, France Lynch

Worth finding but easy to get lost in the lanes. Friendly and traditional with fair food and decent real ales.

21 Aug 2005 23:31

The Amberley Inn, Amberley

Went there this week for the first time in 15 years and was very impressed with the location, ambience, food and real ales.

21 Aug 2005 23:18

The Berkeley Arms, Cam

I agree that it is very much a locals' pub but I've never found it anything other than friendly, and I'm not a regular. It's the only pub I'd go to in the area for Glo'ster rugby on Sky TV and I've found the beers fine.

21 Aug 2005 23:13

The Falcon Hotel, Wotton-under-Edge

This pub has regone extensive renovation recently and is a delight to visit. Several areas with great decor, excellent food, including seafood dishes, and well-kept real ales, often Sharps from Cornwall.

29 Jul 2005 20:47

The Old Crown, Gloucester

One of the only 2 pubs in the county serving Samuel Smiths beer brewed in Tadcaster, Yorkshire, though this is now not available as a real ale here. It's a restored Victorian-type pub a few minutes walk from Gloucester cross
and the famous rugby ground at Kingsholm. Well worth a visit.

22 Jul 2005 22:44

The George Inn, Frocester

By the crossroads from Eastington
and Leonard Stanley - only 3 miles from the M5 - this pub was taken over by community enterprise some years ago.It does fine food and well-kept real ales.
Worth the half-hour diversion on foot if you are walking the Cotswold Way.

22 Jul 2005 22:38

The Fox and Hounds, Coaley

A lovely little local that does fair food and always stocks an ale from the local Uley Brewery.
Interesting acoustic music - mainly country and folk - on a Saturday night.

22 Jul 2005 22:31

The Sudeley Arms, Cheltenham

I am reluctant to drink in Cheltenham but I make an exception for this pub. The last time I visited it I was impressed by its atmosphere and its Goff's Jouster beer.

22 Jul 2005 22:27

The Beaufort Arms, Hawkesbury Upton

This was the Glo'shire pub of the year recently and deservedly so.It is unpretentious and welcoming with good value food, ( I recommend its faggots from Chipping Sodbury), draught cider, Wickwar BOB, and a changing guest ale.

22 Jul 2005 22:19

The Golden Heart, Nettleton Bottom

A traditional pub with several rooms and old-style flooring. It serves several decent ales including Timothy Taylor's Golden Best. Suitable for a quiet sup or a meal - though the prices reflect its location between Cheltenham and Cirencester. Bookings for tables come in fast on weekend evenings. Very welcoming to all kinds of clientele.

22 Jul 2005 22:11

The Lammastide Inn, Berkeley

Lost in the Severnside lanes between Purton and Berkeley, this pub is well worth seeking out. Its food is good value, with a unique touch, and it keeps its real ales well - always had a guest ale.

22 Jul 2005 20:57

The Farmer's Arms, Guiting Power

A basic old-fashioned village pub that serves honest-to-goodness food and those wonderful Donnington ales. A must-visit when walking the many local footpaths in the North Cotswolds.

22 Jul 2005 20:51

The Snowshill Arms, Snowshill

Another gem in the Donnington Brewery holding. I found the beer excellent, and the food good value.

22 Jul 2005 20:45

The Mount Inn, Stanton

This has to be one of the best-located pubs in North Gloucestershire.Follow the signs to Stanton off the Winchcombe to Stratford road (B4632?)and head to the top end of the village past a timewarp series of Cotswold stone cottages. Terrific views of the Malverns in the distance. being one of the 15 Donnington Brewery houses in the area,it is a gem.

22 Jul 2005 20:39

The Black Horse, Cranham Village

A classic country pub. Good range of real ales, and wonderful food. I always chooose their fish pie, and specify a small version at about 7. That's enough for me, and really tasty. Coming out of there at twilight on a summer evening, with the beech woods all around, you could be in the Dordogne in France.Coming from Cheltenham on the A46, turn left after Prinknash Abbey, and fork right for the village. The pub is
in a narrow street on the right in the middle of the village. It has a car park that is to the right of the pub - hard to find, but well worth it!

22 Jul 2005 20:28

The Anchor Inn, Epney

Been in the same hands for many years - good ones ! Wonderful location on the banks of the Severn only a few miles from the Wild Fowl trust at Slimbridge, and 10 minutes from the M5, but it could be another country.good range of food, and one of the best pints of Adnams Bitter in the county,

22 Jul 2005 20:19

The Black Horse Inn, Amberley

Has ben good for years. The recent change of management has improved it. Very good food and a good range of well-kept real ales. Its location is stunning.

22 Jul 2005 20:12

Butchers Arms, Sheepscombe

This is one of a series of Gloucestershire pubs owned by Johnnie Johnston - along with The Falcon, Painswick, and the pub in Andoversford. They all serve great food sourced locally and keep a fine range of well-kept real ales.

22 Jul 2005 20:10

The Butchers Arms, Oakridge Lynch

Under the same management for several years which is always a good sign. Food first-rate, and the real ales.

22 Jul 2005 20:07

The Carpenter's Arms, Miserden

The licensee knows his beers and food. Well worth a visit.

22 Jul 2005 20:05

The Fleece Inn, Hillesley

Went there again today after a 5-mile walk. Lunch was very good, and the Wickwar BOB and Butcombe Bitter were as good as ever good facilities and friendly staff.

22 Jul 2005 20:01

The Falcon, Painswick

A very good pub, especially for food

22 Jul 2005 19:58

The Railway Inn, Cam

Food at lunchtime excellent value, and well-kept beers. One of the best ranges of ciders in Gloucestershire.

22 Jul 2005 19:52

The Pickwick Inn, Lower Wick

This pub has changed hands recently and by local rumour is changing again. In my experience, it is not as good as it was a year ago.

22 Jul 2005 19:48

The Queens Arms, St Just

i agree with their claim in July 2005 to have the best pub food in Cornwall. Beers escellent too. It's in The Good Pub Guide and The Good beer guide.

22 Jul 2005 19:44

The Royal Oak, Prestbury

Found it after a walk on Cleeve Common. What wonderful beer and food.

21 Jul 2005 00:10

The Queens Arms, Breage

Can't believe that this Good Beer Guide listed pub was not on your menu.

21 Jul 2005 00:06

The Queens Arms, St Just

The board outside said "Best food in the area" and in my experience that's justified. Beers also first class.

21 Jul 2005 00:04

The Blue Anchor, Helston

As a lover of low-gravity beers, I was underwhelmed by this famous pub's beers. They all tasted like cider ! Pub itself is a classic. Pity about the beers!

20 Jul 2005 23:58

The New Inn, Waterley Bottom

Can't believe this pub was not already listed , though it is hard to find.A Good Beer Guide regular.First Class beers and excellent food prepared by the licensee.

20 Jul 2005 23:55

The Old Spot, Dursley

My local. Just started doing a fine range of food, prepared by the licensee, not an agency chef. Don't forget that a few years ago it was judged the best pub in England by CAMRA. Always has at least 5 well-kept beers and has frequent festivals.

20 Jul 2005 23:45

Fountain Inn, Gloucester

The best in Gloucester City. I always use it to drink and eat before home games at Gloucester Rugby.
