The George, London Bridge

Delightful pub and clearly very historic, but no excuse for the ludicrously high prices - £4.50 for a pint!!!

14 Nov 2012 16:00

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

A bit disappointed as they seem to have a set of new staff, went in a week or so ago and asked the young lady for a pint of Amstel and was met with a blank expresson, "Whats that, I dont knowi if we sell it?!" Enough said...........

18 Oct 2012 21:34

Colliers Arms, Kings Moss

First time visit this afternoon and certainly wasnt disappointed. Fantastic pub which is in the small village of Kings Moss, on the Lancashire/Merseyside border. Accessible about a mile or so from the Rainford Bypass. Small cosy pub with open fires, a good range of beers on tap and the food was the best sampled for a long while. The landlady was very friendly as were the rest of the staff. My only small gripe (and it is only a very small one) is the size restraints as in some instances you feel too close to the persons sat at an adjoining table, but please dont let that put you off. This is a cracking pub.

Vernon Arms, Liverpool

Definately a worthy candidate for the Dale Street Pub Crawl. Normally a good selection of ales available in two bars (main and rear). The footy is shown here and in fairness its not a bad place to watch it, the barstaff are quick and friendly and you should be ok for a table/seat if you get in handy enough.

17 Jul 2012 17:02

The Pheasant Inn, Hightown

Reading the previous comments I think there has been a change of management in here (unless I went on a good day). We found the staff friendly and helpful, the beer was in good shape and the food was quite good. The menu was fairly limited but this is a beer website so sod the food!
The only thing that shades this pub is the price, I appreciate its in a rural setting in a nice part of Merseyside, but 4.20 for a pint of beer is disgusting!

15 Jul 2012 21:05

The Scotch Piper Inn, Lydiate

Used to be a decent pub and well worth a visit, but called in for a mid-week pint for the first time in about four years and was disappointed.
You get the impression of being an outsider when entering, the beer wasnt up to scratch and most of all the smell..... Yes we know its one of the oldest inn's in the country, but the stench in there was a mixture of wet dog, straw and your grandads socks!!!

15 Jul 2012 21:01

The Bird in the Hand, Knolls Green

Passing through Mobberley and came across this place. Have to admit, was really impressed. Its a Timothy Taylors pub these days and the prices reflect that accordingly. Typical country pub, darts, food served, popular with the locals etc. Bar staff and landlady very friendly and made us feel welcome considering we'd never been in before. Would go as far to say I would definately go out of my way to have a beer in here, really pleasant pub.

19 Jun 2012 22:21

The Barley Mow, Cosgrove

Discovered this place on Monday afternoon as other nearby venues were closed between 3pm and 6pm - thought that practice finished in the 1980s! Only four customers in there, but decent enough beers and has the feel of a locals pub. Still maintain the prices in this area are ludicrous - 9 for two beers and a bag of crisps! Barman wasnt over-friendly, locals were far more accomodating when asking for directions.

19 Jun 2012 22:16

The Sun Inn, Hawkshead

Actually stayed in this room for a night this week an d have to say I cant fault the place or the staff. The ale and food was in great condition and reasonably priced, the staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and the room was great, but this isnt Trip Advisor so we shall skip that part. Of the four pubs in the village, this place and the Red Lion are the best two.

3 May 2012 20:53

The Kings Arms, Hawkshead

Looked great from the outside, nice and comfy once inside, beer was in good condition, the only thing that spoiled it was the miserable landlady/manageress/barmaid, wasnt at all friendly, borderline miserable. I know its hard to smile all day, but people are paying to drink in your pub.

3 May 2012 20:50

Red Lion Inn, Hawkshead

Excellent pub, one of four in the village of Hawkshead. Found the ales in great condition, fair price and the staff and locals alike very friendly. If its a nice day, sit in the beer garden and watch the world go by.

3 May 2012 20:46

The Cavern, Liverpool

Take my advice as a native of Liverpool, by all means pay a visit to the Cavern just for tourist value, stop and have a drink and if a singer is on, take in a song or two. BUT..... Dont stay too long, its dark, it smells, the prices are borderline robbery and the barstaff can be slow. You get the impression the Cavern is clinging on to the whole Beatles reputation by the skin of their teeth, because if this place was anywhere else it would be empty.

13 Apr 2012 15:57

Ye Cracke, Liverpool

Without a doubt certainly in the top three of best pubs in Liverpool. This is a back-street pub that the late John Lennon was famously barred from during his art college days. Nowadays you will find a good range of beers, very friendly staff and a varied selection of patrons who are friendly and chatty. There is a nice beer garden out the back for when the weather is kind enough and the jukebox as other people have said, is one of the best around. Its a good boozer and doesnt attract the scally/arsehole types who can stay around Concert Square and Matthew Street and leave us decent people in peace.

22 Feb 2012 16:30

The Casa Bar, Liverpool

Nice range of European beers on tap, friendly bar staff (including the prettiest Irish girl I have seen in many a day!) and always room to park yourself. Not somewhere you can spend hours and hours, but definately worthy of a few pints before moving on. Incidentally, this part of the city is by far the best for pubs.

17 Feb 2012 15:21

The Philharmonic, Liverpool

Glad to say that after the refurbishment, the Phil has improved a great deal. I said a few years ago on here, the place needed a good spring clean and more enthusiastic staff. Well they done just that. It can still get packed, particularly of a weekend/evening, but regardless of that, I urge ANYONE who is visiting my city to go out of your way and take a look. Probably the best time is a midweek or Sunday lunchtime. If I could say one negative thing, perhaps some of the prices are higher than the norm, but you get what you pay for in my opinion.

17 Feb 2012 15:18

The Shakespeare's Head, Holborn

Credit where its due, went in for a beer and meal with a six friends yesterday (Thursday 6pm) and it was literally bursting at the seams, once we found a table (eventually) we were served quickly and the food was out in ten minutes. The only downside to the place is the crowds, those of a claustrophobic nature should avoid, and the supervisor/manageress who served me looked particularly miserable.

17 Feb 2012 14:56

The Old Fire Station, Hammersmith

Nicely decorated pub and nice to see they have retained some of the old fire station fixtures and fittings. Was empty when we called in (1pm on a Thursday), but good enough service, staggered at the price - 5 for a pint and bag of crisps!

17 Feb 2012 14:52

The Anchor Tap, Tower Bridge

One of the tower bridge guides advised us to go here and fair play to him, a gem of a pub. Lots of hidden rooms (although one of the taller lads with us nearly took his head off) and good Sam Smith prices. Barman was ok, but not over-friendly and some of the locals eyed us with slight suspicion (it must have been the scouse accents!), but apart from that, great place.

26 Oct 2011 11:30

Ice Wharf, Camden

First time visitor yesterday evening (Tuesday), found it a great place. Managed to get a table overlooking the Lock and ordered some food and drinks for our party of five. Food was very quick considering even though the place was quite busy, but fair play it was really nice grub. Ale wasnt too bad either and we found the staff friendly and helpful. No sign of the aggressive bouncers people mention, but it was a Tuesday night.

26 Oct 2011 11:27

The Buck's Head, Camden

Not a bad pub at all, staff were quick and friendly and a good range of beer available. Lots of people ordering food which shows it cant be too bad, but we opted to eat elsewhere (Ice Wharf).

26 Oct 2011 11:23

The Crocodile, Liverpool

Always a good place to watch the match on the foreign channels, as mattbeer points out, pleasant atmosphere, barstaff and customers alike always friendly. Not a bad place at all.

11 May 2011 16:35

The Grapes, Mathew St, Liverpool

Horrendous place, often too busy, music too loud and barstaff docile. I know I sound like an old fart, but this place should be a tourist trap for the amount of people who visit the area, instead its full of old pissheads and scallies!

11 May 2011 16:33

The Tube 80s Bar, Liverpool

Now extremely busy on weekends, your feet do stick to the floor though, but if you like harmless bottled drinks and lots of 80s retro tunes this place is for you. Normally trouble free and some tidy "young..ish" ladies frequent!

11 May 2011 16:31

Ned Kellys, Liverpool

NOW CLOSED! Gone to the big last orders in the sky!

11 May 2011 16:29

The Old Bell, Fleet Street

Cant fault the place, first time visitor on a Tuesday afternoon, barmaid and customer at the bar very friendly (upon hearing the scouse accents!), ale not too bad.

8 May 2011 21:14

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese, Fleet Street

Spent a long day (and evening) drinking in the area yesterday and have to admit, this was by far the best pub I have been in for a good few years. Had a bit of trouble finding it but well worth it. Sinister, dark, chilly rooms away from the warm sun and bustling crowds...fantastic.
Had a few pints of Alpine which was in great condition, and was delighted with the price (apparently Sam Smiths pubs are the cheapest in the capital).
Having never been before, cant comment on the previous members of staff, but the guy who served us had only been in the UK for five weeks (from NZ), he was pleasant, chatty and new a great deal about the history of the pub. 10/10 for me.

4 May 2011 14:34

The George, Temple

Nice pub, friendly enough staff and beer wasnt too bad at all. We went on a Tuesday afternoon when it was quiet, so I expect this place to get a bit busier during footy or rushour.

4 May 2011 14:26

The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street

Superb building with impressive interior. Good ale, most impressed. Only downside was the price. I know its in a prime location etc, but it was very, very expensive.

4 May 2011 14:24

Pogue Mahones, Liverpool

Best pint of Guinness in Liverpool by miles, friendly staff and a nice mix of customers. Probably the only geniune Irish pub in the city as it is actually frequented by the Irish themselves.

15 Feb 2011 13:36

The Roscoe Head, Liverpool

End of the day, those of us reading these reviews are on this site for a reason - we like our pint, and we like our good pubs. Well, this is one of my city's hidden gems and to be perfectly honest it hasnt been in the Good Beer Guide for near 3 decades for nothing.
Heres hoping the Roscoe never changes!

15 Feb 2011 13:33

The Dispensary, Liverpool

Great pub, nice ales, very friendly staff, good range of Cains in here and well worth a visit if in the area.
Can get busy, but not uncomfortable.

15 Feb 2011 13:30

The Vines, Liverpool

Worth a visit just to see the building and its interior. Quite proud to have such an ornate building in my city. It does get quite full at times, weekends can be a bit boisterous, so I suggest coming in during a Sunday lunchtime or weekday afternoon. It gets a 9 from me for the stunning architecture!

15 Feb 2011 13:27

The Excelsior, Liverpool

Glad to see its back open. This pub is like the Ship & Mitres younger cousin, nowhere near as many beers available compared to its famous neighbour, but if you want a nice sit down with your pint then go here. Friendly staff, nice mix of customers and good enough ale. If your doing the Dale Street pub crawl, then call in for a pint.

15 Feb 2011 13:16

Rose and Crown, Liverpool

Used to be the haunt of the local boys in blue from the famous Bridewell opposite, nowadays is frequented by the office types and workers from the magistrates court nearby. Nothing special or different, not a bad pub but not the place that you would go out your way to visit.
Karaoke during the weekend can make the place packed out, but aside from that just the usual barfly regulars.
My advice....stick to the Vernon and the S&M.

15 Feb 2011 13:14

Coach & Horses, Stafford

Not the best pub I have been in, packed, seats ripped and toilets were a bit smelly. Initial barstaff were fine, although the young lady who took over later on had a bit of an attitude issue. Just because she was reasonably good-looking, it doesnt mean every fella is trying to chat you up!
I am sure there is better pubs in Stafford other than this place.

15 Feb 2011 13:04

The Plough, Ipswich

Walked in after watching Liverpool beat Chelsea in Pals opposite, was stunned to be told it closed at 6pm. I know Sundays are different, but 6pm?!

13 Feb 2011 14:05

The Spread Eagle, Ipswich

Was directed here by some locals as the Plough closed at 6pm!? Didnt like it, too crowded with locals watching a band, ale was poor and found it hard to push through the crowds to get too the bar. Bit disappointed after reading the comments on here.

13 Feb 2011 14:03

Isaac's Free House, Ipswich

Not a bad place, seems to be the 'in place' for the locals, everyone seemed friendly enough, though the layout can be a bit confusing - especially if a bit drunk!
Friday night was surprisingly quiet (credit crunch maybe), went back on Sunday and found it full of sailors in uniform pissed out of their skulls and singing sea shanties, the women probably loved it but could be a bit off putting for some......seeing as they do a grand job i'll let them off though! ;)

13 Feb 2011 14:01

Pepper Saint Ontiod, Isle of Dogs

Had arranged to meet my mate here from work after I travelled down from Liverpool. Friday rushour on the underground when your carrying suitcases is a nightmare, but it was worth it to have a few pints in here. Really nice pub, despite being busy with office-types, I never waited more than a few seconds to be served. Reasonable prices, nice bowl of chips to go with my beer....not bad at all!

13 Feb 2011 13:58

The Fire Station, Waterloo

Called in yesterday and found it a very nice place. Conversion is quite good and still retains some of the fire station bay-doors and herringbone tiles that fire stations featured of that era.
It did seem a bit of a upper-class place, and at 4.20 per pint I wont be rushing back in a hurry, but still its definately worth a pint if your in the area.
PS - It got is name as it is the old Waterloo Fire Station, the Great Fire of London didnt start there!

13 Jan 2011 14:32

The Rocket, Euston

Used to be great, but nowadays it gets too packed to be comfortable, getting served is like winning the lottery - 60000/1 chance!
Shame as it was a really good place once upon a time.

13 Jan 2011 14:20

The Euston Flyer, Euston

Its not bad, but must be avoided at all costs during match day. Football mobs from around the country head for here. Ale has always been well kept and a decent enough range.

13 Jan 2011 14:17

The Dolphin, Kings Cross

First time visit last night as we made our way back to Euston station. It has the potential, or maybe has been in the past, to be a good boozer, but we found the atmosphere a bit unwelcoming. Far from hostile, but more of a case of "its a local pub and your not locals". Barman was a bit of a misery, had a game of pool which was tough due to the size of the place, but the ale was spot on - had a nice pint of Pride.
PS - Watch the step in the gents, I nearly broke my ankle!

13 Jan 2011 14:13

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Couldnt find the place! Went down Bull Inn Court from Maiden Lane but only found a building under construction and a load of workmen who didnt know where the pub was!!

13 Dec 2010 22:21

The Chandos, Trafalgar Square

Not a bad sort of place, cheapest round out of all the pubs visited that day. Place was empty when we visited, but the ale wasnt bad and the staff seemed friendly enough. I'd happily go back again.

13 Dec 2010 22:18

The Harp, Covent Garden

Very impressed, pub was packed out but got served more or less immediately. Ale was spot on and the staff very friendly...even found a copy of the Mersey Ale guide on display which is good to see!

13 Dec 2010 22:16

The Lemon Tree, Covent Garden

Visited on the recommendation of this site and a couple of others. Very impressed, although fairly quiet the barman went out of his way to make conversation and the owner also was very friendly.
Ale was spot on albeit a bit pricey, but thats to be expected around this area. I should imagine this place gets a bit packed when more than a dozen people come in!

13 Dec 2010 22:15

Green Lodge Hotel, Hoylake

Enjoyed this place, though in fairness my visit coincided with it being empty and quiet, so cant comment on what it's like when packed.
Really good ale and staff were excellent - well trained and prompt. Ordered food and despite it being quiet, it took a while, however by far the best pub grub I have had on the Wirral in years.
Only complaint I have is the price - 3.00 for a pint is steep, its not London you know!

29 Aug 2010 17:54

Green Lodge Hotel, Hoylake

29 Aug 2010 17:53

Plasterers Arms, Hoylake

First time visit yesterday following recommendations from others. Found it to be a great place, ale was top draw and atmosphere was decent enough.
Had heard rumours of this place being a bit of a "locals only" place, but in truth I found the people to be friendly and pleasant.
Definately worth a visit again.

29 Aug 2010 17:50

The Philharmonic, Liverpool

God bless my colleagues in the Fire Service as they worked very hard to stop the fire at The Korova (adjacent) from spreading into the Phil`. It would have been a monumental disaster had this building been damaged / destroyed.
Thankfully, all is well and the "new look" Philharmonic is a vast improvement on what used to be.

2 Jun 2010 11:21

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

Well worth participating in if your taking in Dale Street's finest - The Vernon, The Ship.
Staff really friendly and good at their job - despite being packed with the office crowds at times, you rarely wait more than a few seconds to be served.

2 Jun 2010 11:14

The Lady of Mann, Liverpool

Nice enough decor, pleasant staff and in a prime location (you can sit in the courtyard weather prevailing), however had a pint of Amstel on Saturday and it was very poor, flat as a witches...
To be perfectly honest, your better going in Rigby's next door.

2 Jun 2010 11:12

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

I have reviewed this pub before and still stand by my statement that this is the best pub in the city. Incredible range of ales, beers and the like, especially from Europe. Staff fast and attentive and of course the interior is worthy of mention alone. Upstairs is equally impressive (when open).
The very few bad points if any; it can get uncomfortably packed, especially on a Thursday/Friday from 4pm onwards, although you can say this is due to it's popularity, you will be hard pushed to find a table during these times.
The toilets are too small and if more than three people it gets difficult.
The best time to visit this gem is on a Sunday lunchtime when getting a seat is easy and you can enjoy your surroundings whilst drinking something unique.

25 May 2010 11:12

Crown, Liverpool

Once upon a time this was a decent place to go, a grand majestic building ideal to spend a day / evening imbibing in. Nowadays, oh dear, full of ruddy-faced drunks, smack heads selling bacon and other people who you really dont want to share a room with. The beer is passable, but not great, but the nail in the coffin was a few weeks ago when whilst meeting mates in there (it's next to Lime Street station) I was astonished to see a rat casually stroll in through the door, thus resulting in all hell being let loose! Screaming women, men attempting to catch the rodent and the bar staff looking on perplexed. Quite why the rat had opted to sup in the Crown is beyond me, but I dont even think he would like the beer!

25 May 2010 11:03

Old Mill, Prescot

Closed temporarily last month due to "episodes of disorder" (Police phrase not mine), back open now. Avoid and go elsewhere, beer is terrible, full of urchins who are drunk and aggressive, orange-faced raucous teenage girls and other cretins! Only good points are when its quiet its ok for a quick one, and the bar staff are geniunely friendly people.

25 May 2010 10:53

The Clock Face, Prescot

Best pub in Prescot for ales, quality is great and atmosphere really good. Downside is you need legs like pistons to walk back up the hill into Prescot.

25 May 2010 10:50

The Deanes House, Prescot

Beer is dodgy, place needs refurbishing and a good clean, however on a plus it has a pool table which is rarely used, so if you want a drink and a quiet game of pool - this is your place...as long as you buy something out of a bottle and not on draught!

25 May 2010 10:49

The Grapes, Eccleston Park

Nice big pub which in the main caters for families eating, food isnt too bad albeit fairly limited. Staff over-enthusiastic, especially the old hag of a hostess who insists of screeching like a banshee greetings to regulars constantly, which isnt good for the old ticker when she is stood behind you!
Beer is fair, although slightly overpriced and it only has Sky Sports News which is always muted.

25 May 2010 10:47

McHales, Liverpool

Full of people over 60 who spend their days drinking and getting louder and louder. You know the types, they sing (screech) out of tune songs on the last bus home.
It's actually not too bad on Paddys Day, but apart from that i'd rather drink orange juice at home!!!!

9 Jun 2009 15:23

The Old Post Office, Liverpool

Ashamed to say, as a local - never actually went in here until a couple of months ago. Nothing special, locals and staff friendly enough, though it gets rammed to capacity of Thursday / Friday evening with office workers and workmen.

9 Jun 2009 15:18

The Lion Tavern, Liverpool

Great place to go about 10 minutes walk from the Lime Street / Queens Square Bus Station. Impressive architecture (probably on a smaller scale than the Philarmonic). Gets busy but well worth going to.

7 Jun 2009 14:33

Ye Hole in Ye Wall, Liverpool

Old fashioned boozer hidden away near Rigbys. Friendly enough place, though exactly what you expect from an "old mans pub", dark, quiet and dusty. Worth a pint in there as it's the oldest pub in Liverpool.

7 Jun 2009 14:24

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

Not a bad place at all, can get packed during weekday evenings (office people) but there is a courtyard out the back to sit out and chill. Staff are friendly and attentive and the beer is good. Only downside is the food is too expensive, but aside from that - very good indeed.

7 Jun 2009 14:22

Edward's Bar, Liverpool

Full of orange girls and scallies....avoid at all costs!

7 Jun 2009 14:17

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

Read through my previous comments about this pub and you'll see how much I love it, but unfortunately I went the other day and whilst waiting to get served was disappointed to hear the two barmaids whilst wearing Everton tops talking about Liverpool FC in rather insulting, foul-mouthed terms! It's not nice hearing young girls swear, but they should bear in mind customers stood listening at the bar.

17 May 2009 17:23

The Llandoger, Bristol

Very disappointed to hear the comments about the Trow, came to Bristol for the first time in 2004 and had a great night on King Street - including the Trow!
Can any of you locals recommend anywhere similar - ie good real ales, not too loud and in the city centre?

17 May 2009 17:12

The Turks Head, St Helens

The ONLY real ale pub in St Helens worth going to, great selection of ales and best pint of Hobgoblin i've tasted in many years.

16 Mar 2009 20:22

Glass House, St Helens

Full of local alcoholics, rummies and tramps! On the last three times I visited there has been some kind of scuffle or fight among them. Also, our food was cold when it came - but thats in most Wetherspoons!

16 Mar 2009 20:19

The Nelson Hotel, St Helens

Rubbish, full of local scallies with no teeth, ben sherman shirts, black trousers and white socks!

16 Mar 2009 20:17

The Fly in the Loaf, Liverpool

Cant fault this place at all, always good beer and mellow atmosphere. Staff are outstanding though, never wait to be served, always friendly and more than willing to recommend various ales. Although there is better pubs within walking distance, I would and have happily spend a whole afternoon / evening drinking here!

8 Mar 2009 21:09

Belvedere, Liverpool

Surprised to hear it is getting refurbished again so soon.....interesting

8 Mar 2009 21:04

Bar Ca Va, Liverpool

Mellow and chilled out, great for those Saturday/Sunday daytime drinking sessions!

7 Mar 2009 22:38

Walkabout, Liverpool

Sadly, very sadly, another example of a once great place now turned crap because of scallys and tosser bouncers! It was closed temporarily a few weeks back by the Police due to a stabbing! Enough said.

7 Mar 2009 22:37

The DugOut Bar, Liverpool

Excellent little place hidden away from the main drag, has the biggest range of bottled beer I have seen for a long time and prices very reasonable too!

7 Mar 2009 22:35

Head of Steam, Liverpool

Huge pub that was once a great place to spend a few hours. Sadly, its gone downhill since.

7 Mar 2009 22:34

Crown, Liverpool

Not a bad pub at all, can get a bit packed at times, but one of the cheapest boozers in Liverpool. Handy if your getting on or off a train at Lime Street and dont make the mistake of going to Wetherspoons opposite!

7 Mar 2009 22:33

Richard John Blackler, Liverpool

I'm a local and urge you to avoid this place at all costs. The only thing it's got going for it is.....nothing!
Long, long waits to get served, tables stacked with dirty plates, salt and tomato sauce on the chairs, went with a group of lads a few weeks ago and surprise surprise we all ended up with bad guts the next day! To add insult to injury we were asked by a beggar if we "could spare any change" he them promptly tried to steal the contents of the salt, sauce, vinegar draw until two of my mates (who are bobbies) intervened! Needless to say the staff looked on with blank expressions and no word of thanks/apology. Hand on heart, i've been here a few times and each time its rubbish. Avoid like the plague!

7 Mar 2009 22:30

Blackburne Arms Hotel, Liverpool

You may face a bit of a walk from the city centre to get here, but I promise you its worth it! As stated below, lots of choice both beer wise and food wise and all in great condition. Also, make sure you visit the other locals nearby; Peter Kavanaghs, The Belvedere and The Cracke.

17 Feb 2009 16:14

Navigator, Stoneycroft

The pick of the Wetherspoons in Liverpool, good friendly barstaff who are quick, beer clean and decent and grub not too bad at all. We use this place to start off our daytime drinking sessions!

17 Feb 2009 16:10

The Royal George, Euston

Met our mates off the train and headed for the Doric Arch which was shut, so came here instead. Glad we did, very friendly boozer, barman was a funny fella and was good at his job. Beer was nice and the barman remembered our orders which was impressive. I'd definately come again.

4 Feb 2009 19:39

The Rocket, Euston

First time visitor to the Rocket, very impressed, cheap enough (for London) and good food deals. Plus a couple of pool tables, footy on the box and some nice tunes on the jukebox. The perfect pub? Nah not quite, they took an eternity to serve us and everyone else, and when I went the bogs - a poster told me somebody had been filled in badly in an unprovoked attack over Christmas!! However, going on other comments, it would seem that was the old Rocket, and next time I'm off to London - i'll be back.

4 Feb 2009 19:37

The Bridge House, Paddington

Called into here for a quick pint on our way to the Warwick Castle, the lads at Paddington Fire Station told us the Warwick was the better pub and they werent wrong. It was liking walking into a private function with people looking us like we had two heads (some of us did). Took ages getting served too - so not impressed!

3 Feb 2009 20:33

The Warwick Castle, Maida Vale

Great little cosy boozer recommended by my friends at Paddington Fire Station. Had a pint of London Pride which was decent enough. Managed to get a table as it was quite packed. A bit pricey and one of two of the locals were a bit snooty, but overall - very nice!

Ye Cracke, Liverpool

Has always been a decent place to go, even better if you can get into the `War Room`. The Wobbly Bob is decent in here, and in all the years I have been going in there ive never seen no trouble.
PS - The gents are to be avoided at ALL COSTS.

5 Sep 2008 21:01

Bear's Paw, Warmingham

Was under refurbishment, but suffered a major fire yesterday and was severely damaged.

28 May 2008 14:00

The Waterhouse, Manchester

Went last night (Thursday) for the first time and although impressed with the building and room, service was a bit poor - staff taking too long to serve you - one barmaid chose to chat to her mate rather than serve customers.
Food was warm when it arrived as opposed to hot. Aside from that, Ok - i'd probably give it another chance.

7 Mar 2008 11:54

Belvedere, Liverpool

This is a hidden gem, tucked away in a cul-de-sac off Faulkner Street. Its like walking back into a typical 1960s Liverpool Pub, no nonsense, clean and cosy. Great range of ales available, plus staff very friendly.

5 Mar 2008 11:46

The Bottle and Glass, Rainford

I would go as far to say, that this is one of the best pubs in the area for food and service. Have been here for a number of years and on each occasion found it first class.
Ideal for a group meal or a romantic meal, only downside is sometimes you have to wait a while for a table - we turned up on spec and waited 45 minutes.

11 Oct 2007 08:34

The Golden Fleece, York

Enjoyed a good pint in this pub by nice friendly staff, they even gave a little bit of history of the pub - apparently the most haunted pub in York ! Didnt see nothing myself but certainly wouldnt have the bottle to stay the night there!

28 Sep 2007 15:47

Market Tavern (Lincoln Square), St Helens

Not a bad place, more late twenties/thirty-something crowd, always packed and music pretty decent.

28 Aug 2007 16:31

The Krazy House, Liverpool

Havent been for a few months but one of the best clubs in Liverpool. Four floors of music, cheap ale and very few scallies - mostly students, goths and friendly locals !
Top floor is best, great tunes from the 80s onwards

7 Jul 2007 17:35

The Counting House, St Helens

Good place this, probably the best in St.Helens. Good range of drinks and nice food. Plus this place boasts the most stunning Polish barmaid i`ve seen in many a year... simply stunning !

28 Jun 2007 13:36

Joker's Bar, St Helens

Hell on earth....

Enough said

28 Jun 2007 13:35

Buzbys, St Helens

Its a dump, avoid like the plague unless you like fighting and drinking poor beer out of dirty glasses. Full of local scallies old and young !

23 Mar 2007 12:04

The Ship Inn, Lathom

Delightful, canalside pub which offers a whole host of real ales and good, home-cooked food. Can sometimes get busy, but always assured a warm, friendly welcome.
Dogs are also welcome here.

26 Nov 2006 21:47

Baa Bar, Liverpool

Laid back, mellow, cheap, good music and the best roof-top beer garden in Liverpool - great place this, but not as good as it used to be (is anything these days?)

18 Oct 2006 22:27

Bar Ca Va, Liverpool

Great bar and very mellow, big huge couches to lounge in and sample the tequilia ! Never no aggro, mostly a student crowd and friendly locals.

18 Oct 2006 22:26

Richard John Blackler, Liverpool

Its one to avoid this place, SOMETIMES takes a while to get served, especially of a Saturday daytime when full of shoppers.
However, avoid if any big footy matches are on in the city - the visiting fans always congregate in here as its opposite Lime Street!

18 Oct 2006 22:23

The Vines, Liverpool

The Vines is better known in Liverpool as `The Big House` and is one of a number of grand Victorian boozers in the city (see also the likes of the Phil, the crown, the lion tavern).
I found the ale here quite decent, it is definately worth a stop off on a crawl.

18 Oct 2006 22:20

The Lion Tavern, Liverpool

This is a class pub, ornate and a really impressive interior. Good beer and decent food, i`d say it is definately in the top 5 pubs in our city!

16 Oct 2006 22:28

Thomas Rigby's, Liverpool

Its a good pub this, nice food and great beers. Rear yard is nice for sitting out in. Waitress service for your ale in the back room which is handy.
Downsides - can get packed as the city workers all make a beeline for this place, also can get a bit smokey / dusty sometimes. But overall - good outweighs the bad.

16 Oct 2006 22:17

The Durning Arms Hotel, Liverpool

My dad used to be a Fireman in the station next to this boozer in the 1960s - it was rough as a*** holes then, and is probably the same now (the fire station closed in 1976)

16 Oct 2006 22:11

The Cat and Fiddle, Bootle

Full of office workers from St.Martins House - can get very busy Friday teatime (when all the colars fancy a beer after shuffling paper all day)

16 Oct 2006 22:02

The Boathouse, Parkgate

Good pub, nice views over to Wales from the gardens at rear. Staff pleasant and attentive.

23 Jul 2006 15:39

The Dalli Bar, St Helens

Its not actually a bad place, situated on the main bar strip through St.Helens, it attracts more your late 20s/mid 30s crowd. Can get uncomfortably packed on weekends, but overall its a decent place.

28 Jun 2006 17:38

The Sports Cafe, Liverpool

Dont bother watching the game in here, no atmosphere at all ! TV screens too small, like standing in a batcave - a damp, smelly batcave !

25 May 2006 16:49

The Ship Inn, Haskayne

Voted as Country pub of 2005 by local branch of CAMRA, is an excellent pub although you may struggle to find it if your not a local. Attentive bar staff and beers well kept - my Bombadier was faultless. Only downside is the amount of dogs in attendance when I visited, appreciate that pets can be allowed in pubs, but on this occasion I expected to see Rolf Harris or Barbara Woodhouse, such was the number of mutts at the bar

21 Dec 2005 22:59

The Cock and Bottle, Tarleton

Potentially a decent pub, fair size, attentive staff, nice decor - however...
Upon entering on Friday night, found atmosphere to be quite hostile from locals, who stared at us like we had just landed from Mars! Its one of them pubs, if your local - great, if your from outside the village - your not welcome!

20 Nov 2005 18:30

Pogue Mahones, Liverpool

Ashamed to say, have walked past this pub on numerous occasions and never been inside. Went in on Tuesday and found a gem of a pub. You dont need to be a genius to realise this is a Irish pub. Attentive, well-mannered bar staff, decent pints and plenty of comfy seating with candles. Also, on through the week is good thing where the musically minded gather to have a jamming session together!

27 Oct 2005 13:57

Sullivans Wine Bar, Bootle

Rough boozer, often trouble on weekends, always fighting in or around this place. I would avoid this pub like the plague!

24 Oct 2005 13:46

The Egerton Arms, Chelford

Attractive, traditional country pub located on the Knutsford to Macclesfield road, just outside the picturesque village of Chelford.
Former coach house which now offers a fine selection of ale, including the best pint of Bombadier i`ve tasted in many a year!
Food is reputed to be top draw too!

22 Oct 2005 18:03

The Society Rooms, Macclesfield

Not a bad place, friendly doorstaff and bar workers. Ale wasnt bad, but expected it to be more full on a Friday night. Think everyone else was heading elsewhere.

22 Oct 2005 17:57

Chicago Rock Cafe, Macclesfield

Went in Chicago Rock last night and had the worst pint of beer i`ve ever had the misfortune to taste. Flat as a pancake and very poor.
Not sure where this myth about waiting hours to get served came from though, I got served twice no bother and it was packed.

22 Oct 2005 17:56

The Bowring Park, Liverpool

Recently refurbished, this is a large boozer which is often only a quarter full unless a big game is on. However its clean, friendly and the beer is top notch.

1 Oct 2005 16:51

The Everyman Bistro, Liverpool

Decent place, nice wide-range of beers, and as mentioned nice food. However you will struggle to get a seat / table on Thursdays, Friday, Saturday or Sunday unless you camp there the night before! I`ve always ended up standing.

29 Sep 2005 13:48

Hogshead, Bristol

The only place we found in the entire city of Bristol on a Saturday morning at 12.30pm to show my beloved Reds play, so it will do for me. Got some food which wasnt too bad, pleasant staff.

28 Sep 2005 13:04

The Old Fish Market, Bristol

Large pub which was quite busy on Saturday tea-time. Friendly staff and friendly locals, good range of real ales available - not bad at all !

25 Sep 2005 18:20

The Llandoger, Bristol

Another decent pub in what appears to be a overall decent street for drinking! Huge rambling building which is reputed to be haunted - according to the barman (by who or what remains to be seen). Plenty of real ales on tap and a really nice place.

25 Sep 2005 17:42

The Old Duke, Bristol

Took in the Old Duke last night (Saturday) after a recomendation by locals. Packed to the rafters (sign of a decent boozer) with a jazz band playing. Beer not bad, but was uncomfortably packed and sweaty inside so we sat off outside. Apart from that, not bad at all - i`d go again!

25 Sep 2005 17:40

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol

Being a first time visitor to Bristol, this was by far the best pub we visited (me and my 4 mates). Friendly, clean and a wide-range of ales available. Full of cosy snugs and rooms. Top draw boozer this, and a MUST for anyone visiting Bristol.

25 Sep 2005 17:38

The Hope and Anchor, Liverpool

A decent enough student pub in the back streets near to Liverpool JMU, caters for students (hence always asking if we have a yellow card!) food is fantastic, plenty of pool tables, and being a student gaff - never no trouble !

7 Sep 2005 17:06

Bar Hannah, Liverpool

Inside can get a bit hot and sweaty and crowded, but go outside and sit off (weather permitting) and you have yourself a damned fine bar.

7 Sep 2005 16:55

Scarisbrick Arms, Downholland

Always been a firm favourite of mine, cracking food and very friendly staff. Nice little beer garden next to the canal, this place is crowded with locals on Sunday lunchtime.
However on my list trip last month, interior seemed dirty and one barmaid (could have been the landlady) had a bad attitude !
Still, worth a visit - hope I went on a off day

2 Sep 2005 16:18

Sir Thomas Gerard, Ashton In Makerfield

Although a large place and typically decorated `Wethers` style, this is a `locals` boozer. Being a stranger in here is not advisable, although there is a large number of bar staff on duty.

2 Sep 2005 16:13

Wellington, Eccleston Park

Not a bad pub, nice range of beers and some very nice meals available. Pleasant and no scallies or chavs, what more can you ask for !

2 Sep 2005 11:40

The Ship and Mitre, Liverpool

Spent most of my youth enjoying `exotic` beers and playing pool here every Thursday for several years. Very friendly atmosphere and attentive bar-staff. Sad to see the pool table and original gas lamps go, but still the `Rolls Royce` of Ale Houses in our city!!!

23 Aug 2005 16:13

The Hare and Hounds, West Derby

Pleasant, clean boozer located in the centre of West Derby Village. Refurbished a couple of years ago and now has the modern, wooden floored, pastel coloured look.
Gets very busy of a weekend but plenty of bar staff on duty. Quiz night on Wednesday by the same lady who runs the quiz in the Jolly Miller on Thursday!

23 Aug 2005 16:03

The Ship Hotel, Parkgate

Decent pub but a bit empty, ale good and barstaff very friendly.

21 Aug 2005 19:10

The Wheatsheaf, Raby Mere

Beautiful pub with thatched roof set in the Wirral countryside. However getting served took forever and it was full of very snooty locals. Place seemed quite `clicky` and the carpark was full of BMWs, Range Rovers etc.
Perhaps it was because it was a Sunday evening?

21 Aug 2005 19:08

Slug and Lettuce, Didsbury

Not a bad boozer, fast service although to be honest staff seemed far more interested in messing round than serving customers, drinks a tad too pricey.

Give it a 7/10

15 Aug 2005 21:43

Flares, Liverpool

Full of drunken 40+ fools in 70s wigs making a spectacle of themselves, a fair share of scallies too, this place USED to be alright, but its gone down hill

4 Aug 2005 16:28

The Philharmonic, Liverpool

A popular place with theatre goers from the adjacent Everyman, however as said by the sensible people below, this place badly needs a tidy up! It is one of the most famous buildings in our city and is getting left to pot! Managers, brewery - listen to your customers and spend some cash.
Saying that, the gents are still the most spectacular toilets in the country!

19 Jul 2005 22:56

The Augustus John, University of Liverpool

Disappointed, went in today and found it empty, sadly the two pint glasses we were given had greasy fingerprints in them on the inside, the tables were dirty too.
Not impressed, sorry

19 Jul 2005 22:52

Ye Olde Black Bear, Tewkesbury

Returning from the Air Tattoo at Fairford, we stopped off in Tewkesbury for a quick beer, of the three pubs we visited - this was the best by a country mile! Quick, attentive service, nice pint (plenty of real ale available) and a cracking beer garden at the rear.
Top draw!

18 Jul 2005 21:03

Barum Top, Halifax

Went in last night (Saturday) and it looked nice and packed, sadly - bar staff are rubbish! Waited ages to be served and asked for a pint of Mansfield (local ale) and a coke, the lad give my a coke and nothing else, when I asked him where my Mansfield was he promptly told me `we dont sell it` !
Went passed this pub later to see half of West Yorks Police steaming in - and I dont think it was for the cheap ale or food

5 Jun 2005 13:29

The Jolly Miller, Stoneycroft

Famous and popular boozer located on the busy Queens Drive in Liverpool. No trouble getting a seat but always nice and packed. Wednesday night is quiz night hosted by the lovely Cathy! Good food but a bit pricey for the beer - 2.08 for a Fosters. Ideal and reknowned for being a decent meeting venue before moving on!

1 Apr 2005 16:24

Rubber Soul, Liverpool

This is a pretty dodgy place to go, gets jam packed at weekends and full of middle-aged drunken fellas making a fool of themselves trying to `snare` girls. I`m 27 and me my mates wouldnt be seen dead in the place...ladies my advice to you is give it a wide beth

1 Apr 2005 10:58

Walkabout, Liverpool

Not bad for a theme chain pub, mid-week drink offers make this place dirt cheap (2-4-1 etc).
Music is fantastic and varied, goes from Meat Loaf to 80s, 70s back to present.
Can get too packed when footy or rugby is on, so if you want to sit down you`ll have no chance

1 Apr 2005 10:49

Wonder Bar, Liverpool

Full of young scallies, fighting on a regular basis, trouble and the Wonder Bar go hand in hand. Avoid like the plague if you want a good night out.

1 Apr 2005 10:45

Swan Hotel, Huyton

Typical old mans pub which is inhabited by the same people daily. Recently refurbished a few years ago it boasts two bars, a pool table and big screens for sports.
Weekends can be hit and miss, on occasions Saturday night may have a band on, although more often than not it is empty. Sunday from 1.pm is more lively though and a good days drinking can be had.

24 Mar 2005 08:40

Gold Balance, Kirkby

Without wishing to offend the residents of Kirkby too much, this place opened in 1999 in the town centre of a pretty rough town in the suburbs of Liverpool. Thus, it is often packed full of the same regulars who consist of old men in their 50s/60s who park themselves inside all day drinking guiness and travel back and forth the bookmakers!
Being Wetherspoons, food is cheap and good, large selection of real ales available and bar staff are friendly guys. However the toilets are located at the top of a massive flight of stairs to the rear of the pub - not good if your old, disabled or drunk

23 Mar 2005 21:29

Modo, Liverpool

Cracking bar in the heart of Liverpools Concert Square. Plays funky tunes with cool chairs and sofas. This was THE place to go in its prime, however last couple of years its gone to the dogs slightly. Still worth going to, especially mid-week and ideal to take a first date to! ;-)

23 Mar 2005 21:23

Barracuda, Liverpool

Interesting comments about the (in)famous Barra! Lets be honest here, as mentioned - great during the daytime, however come nightime is goes downhill fast, squadrons of scallies roam around looking for trouble (Liverpool English Dictionary `scally` - Lacoste wearing thug)
Horrendous music, shattered bottles on the floor...need I continue

23 Mar 2005 21:20

The Pilgrim, Liverpool

A quality pub located in the shadow of the Anglican Cathedral, this basement boozer is quality. 1950s style booths adorn the walls (as mentioned below) however any poor soul over 14 stone will suffer trying to get in or out! The ale is cheap (I would suggest a pint of Bomber) and if you go on a Sunday evening they have live music!

23 Mar 2005 21:14

Peter Kavanaghs, Liverpool

Tucked away down a side-street can be found possibly the quirkiest pub in Liverpool. Full of eccentric characters and a maze of rooms and snugs, you will not be bored in this pub. Every inch of wall space is filled with photos, posters and signs, the ceiling is adorned with a whole variety of objects, everything from old radios to saucepans!
A very friendly place and A MUST for anyone visiting Liverpool.

23 Mar 2005 21:06

The Flute and Firkin, Liverpool

Although this is a large `theme` type of pub, it is fantastic to watch football in. Situated in the heart of Liverpool`s student area, it does attract that sort of customers, however it is cheap, and friendly.
