The Old Sun, Harlington

It was ran by Paul and had just become our local but unfortunately we went in on Friday and he seems to have left!! The new people weren't that friendly and had their own "cronies" at the bar and the Guinness they served was disgusting, tasted of Bacardi. Lets hope they're temporary and whoever takes it on pulls it around again. Shan't be visiting for a while despite being 5 mins round the corner from it.

The Jolly Coopers, Wardhedges

Absolutely great food menu with excellent kept beers, small bar at the front with a large restaurant overlooking the gardens at the back - down a narrow lane in the village so don't miss it, absolutely excellent and must go to the loo to look at the "arty" piccies!! Cheered my mother-in-law no end!

The Mail Coach, Bishopsgate

Not a bad place and a decent pint of Guinness with friendly staff. We had food and it was excellent, very big plate fulls. Not too many suits venture in here so it's quite relaxed and you can actually hear yourself speak without having to shout over the top of someone bragging about their stocks and shares!

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

This reopened in July with new owners but the poor service by staff is prevalent and you might die of thirst from waiting too long to get served. Always busy on an evening with bus tours of camera clad foreigners clicking away in your earhole whilst you're trying to get served. Foreign staff who know nothing of the history of the pub either which is a real shame.

The Chamberlain Hotel, Aldgate

Very friendly staff and not that expensive for a hotel pub. Good range of beers too. Would recommend it for a few early drinks after work as it isn't full of suits, drunk or not

Ye Three Lords, Aldgate

Good pint of guinness with friendly staff if you can stand being jostled on a Friday evening with very pissed up suits who obviously owned the place ... or thought they did anyway. Not bad but not the place for a quiet drink on a Friday night.

The Intrepid Fox, Soho

I've heard that a property developer has bought the Fox and is making it into fancy apartments along with around 50 or so other pubs - such a shame!

The Three Horseshoes, Bourne End

Excellent setting with a nice good interior but not many beers to choose from. Staff attentive in the restaurant bit and very good food too. Just watch the canal at the back if you've had a few too many and the resident swan, he's a nasty bugger!

The Golden Bell, Leighton Buzzard

Very busy pub but excellent staff who knew how to serve several people at the same time instead of waiting for the Guinness to settle! Good range of beers and the food was excellent despite being relatively cheap. Very lively place with good atmosphere.

The Anglers Retreat, Marsworth

Excellent friendly pub with a good menu. We hit a busy patch so waited a long time for our food but it was good when it came. Nice garden to the side where you can actually take dogs, not allowed in the actual pub though.

Red Lion, Marsworth

Excellent 17th Century Inn just off the canal. Serves lunches and evening meals with excellent, good portion food (evening meals Tues-Sat 6:00pm-9:00pm) with excellent range of ale and a good cider (headache stuff!). Highly recommend it.

The Only Running Footman, Mayfair

Visited on a Saturday afternoon and were welcomed by a very surly miserable barman as we'd obviously interrupted his TV viewing, we were the only ones in there! Presumably it does a trade in the week rather than at weekends. Wouldn't recommend it at weekends!

20 Aug 2006 15:26

Ye Grapes, Mayfair

One bar girl with a full pub on a hen night, waited ages to get served and then paid 6.30 for a Guinness and a Boddingtons! Nothing amazing really, better to window shop in this area than actually go in anywhere!

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

The refurb has been done well although the bar staff are still very slack when you stand at the far end of the bar rather than in the busy bit. Food was excellent despite not having everything I should have which was stated on the menu and the chicken breast appeared to be the pre-packed kind rather than fresh but as its only just opened I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. I only live next door so no doubt I'll be trying it again soon. The Adnams Best Bitter was good.

The Blue Bell, Nottingham

Saturday afternoon and no-one in whereas Langtrys next door was heaving. Could be something to do with awful staff who were arguing between themselves and messing about in the pub and used quite a lot of "f" words. Real shame, a few years ago it was a good place to be. Would not recommend it at all!

The Salutation Inn, Nottingham

Went on Saturday afternoon - used to be packed all the time but it was empty and the barmaid had obviously forgotten how to smile and speak nicely to customers. Didn't have the footy on either. Has certainly gone down hill over the last year or so. Good ales although the Guinness we had tasted a bit funny.

The Prospect of Whitby, Wapping

DON'T GO - is closed for refurbishment until 10 July 2006!

The Peacock, Tower Hill

A nice friendly pub, a few suits in but other than that a great atmosphere and the pool table upstairs was full. Good Guinness and the barlady, who was extremely friendly, even bought it over to us. Haven't tried the food yet but it looked and smelled good!

Hennessys, Tower Hill

Great pub. Went in a Friday night when it was quite busy but the barman, who was already serving someone, took notice and asked what drinks I would like. He then served me immediately after and, because it was Guinness, he brought them over to us. Friendly atmosphere, excellent beer.

The Cock and Woolpack, City Of London

I think there is a new landlady at this pub. Although full of suits at lunchtime it was decent beer and the doorstep sandwiches on fresh bread and home made chips looked good too. Not much food was being left by those eating. Not a massive place but a good out of the way pub not frequented by too many tourists and only the "suits" in the know.

White Horse, Harpenden

Don't go - we went last weekend and its closed. They are completely refurbishing the place, looks like a lot of work left to do but I should imagine they will try and get open for Xmas or at least New Year. Shame, it used to be a good pub with good food. Hope they don't go and make it all poncy and take out the pool tables!

The Engineer, Harpenden

This pub is great. It's a bit out of the way up a hill at the back of Harpenden but its lovely. The drinks are good, they show the rugby (and what a great afternoon we had in there last weekend despite losing to the Kiwis) and they do excellent food too both in the bar and the side restaurant in the conservatory.

Silver Cup, Harpenden

This pub used to be great with an eating bit one side and the pool table and a bar the other with a rather pissed up Landlord who was cool. Went in last weekend and it was awful. The pool table has gone and the pub has been tidied up beyond belief. No longer a proper boozer and no longer somewhere enjoyable to go - it was full of Aussies and Kiwis who thought they owned the place!

The Nell Gwynne, Covent Garden

Fantastic on a Saturday afternoon watching the rugby and the footy scores. The Manager was fantastic (despite being a Palace fan!) and really friendly. An absolute gem of a pub despite the staircase to the loos!

18 Sep 2005 12:23

The King and Keys, Fleet Street

We went in on a Saturday lunchtime to a very mixed clientele and not a gay man in sight(that I could tell anyway)! Excellent Guinness although expensive but the food was marvellous. Be warned if ordering a snack, the portions are huge!

18 Sep 2005 12:18

The Walkabout, Finchley Road

Australian pub, you're having a laugh and at 3.00 a pint for Guinness which wasn't even cold (so much for the Aussies liking cold beer) - most expensive drink all day despite drinking beforehand in central London. Nice to see the no smoking area was kept free of smokers - NOT! Obviously the blond in question couldn't read the 3 signs around her saying "No Smoking". Av been in a few Walkabouts in my time and this was the WORST!

18 Sep 2005 12:15

The Worlds End, Camden

Went into this pub whilst they were showing the cricket on a Saturday afternoon. 2 or 3 people in including a couple of young lads asleep at one of the tables. Was served two horrible pints but we managed to get the foreign barmaid to understand we didn't like them and that she should change them. Absolutely dreary, no atmosphere and locals from what I could see.

15 Sep 2005 13:08

The Kings Arms, Soho

I went in completely oblivious to the fact that it was a gay bar and was made to feel very welcome (s.w.f) although this was early evening on a Saturday. Good pints served too. Nice to look at a few decent blokes, just a pity they weren't interested in me!

15 Sep 2005 13:05

The Blind Beggar, Whitechapel

Yes, go to the Blind Beggar if you want a good East End Pub with a real cockney barmaid and good ale - NOT!! A barmaid who couldn't speak English, 2 pints of vinegar ... oh sorry I mean Directors for 5.80! AND she didn't even have the bloody cricket on. We managed to force down a drink and in that time about 10 people came in, looked around and walked back out again. I think the Krays may be turning in their graves! Absolutely 'orrible!

12 Sep 2005 11:18

The Havelock Tavern, Kensington

Don't bother going - the owners were due to sell in about two weeks (29 August 2005) but unfortunately Jamie Oliver's favourite Gastro-Pub burnt down !?!?

1 Sep 2005 11:11

The Crosse Keys, Bank

At least this is on the CITY pubs which is open on a Saturday evening, was still serving food and was showing the footy. Not bad for the City and had some pretty decent beers on.

25 Aug 2005 13:11

The Bishop's Finger, Barbican

Went in last week, food (try the wonderful selection of sausages) and service and beer were excellent but upstairs was closed for refurbishment and the sign downstairs said that it would be closing soon for full refurbishment. Lets hope they just give it a lick of paint and don't change anything else!

16 Aug 2005 19:04

Turners Old Star, Wapping

Brilliant local with some excellent characters. Nothing fancy, just a proper pub. Was made to feel very welcome by the Landlord and all the regulars. Can't wait to go in when its full of hockey players ;)

15 Aug 2005 15:49

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden

Visited this pub on Saturday, very quiet, beer not very good. Seems to have been taken over since I last went in. Not the standard it used to be anymore I'm afraid.
