visited here for the second time on the 9th of august as staying with friends in harpenden and have to say what an improvement! firstly it was quiz night so very busy, infact one of the busiest pub quizes I have ever been to, but that aside myself and my partner came here for dinner in june and although the food was by no means poor it wasn't fantastic either, more mediocre, and we felt the presentation was a let down for such a picturesque pub. This time round we both had the lamb which was cooked to perfection and presented beautifully, we were further impressed by this as it was such a busy night. on chatting to the waiter we discovered that there was indeed a new chef. we will definitely be returning and recommending the pub to any friends visiting the area. we were also impressed by the lovely garden areas. willimnot1 - 30 Aug 2011 05:46 |
I really like this pub. Good beer, which is well kept, and the guests usually appeal to me. Tend to be around the 4.0 to 4.3% strength so similar to the Spitfire and Pride which are always on (as well as the Adnams and I think something else too). Fair range of lagers, and at least one cider on draught. Food is better than average pub fare, with a bar menu which is good and a restaurant menu which excites me less. Either of which can be eaten anywhere. A few specials (e.g. pasta of the day) usually appear on a blackboard. I saw a sign outside saying they are now open for brunch on Saturdays, but haven't tried it. Nice enough garden and patio area, and dogs welcomed in certain parts of the pub too. TVs in both bars, and show most sporting things in the smaller bar but only seem to be on in the main bar for major events so not too instrusive. Good quiz on Tuesday nights which seems popular as the pub is overtaken by quizzers. Clientele seems to be a total mix from younger people right through to OAPs and from young couples to generation spanning family groups. It appears to have a good mix of regular visitors, plus the actual 'bar propping' regulars. Would recommend it thoroughly, both for a quick pint, or food. Electric_Jellyfish - 13 Jun 2011 14:27 |
Wide range of beer, which is of good quality. Prompt and efficent service. The only bad things with this pub was the price of the beer (3.35 for Doombar and Side Pocket) and also sometimes they have two different sports showing on the big screens and the jukebox/music playing in the back ground. The last time I went in there was before the refurb and although it wasn't in dire need of being doing up, now it is been tastefully done and no too gastropub-y. IMG1975 - 22 May 2011 19:50 |
Can't believe I'd lived in Harpo around 15 years before I tried the Engineer; now very much my favourite local. Nice atmosphere, friendly and efficient service and a nice garden for sunny days. If they could add an additional guest beer and, perhaps, just add to their veggie menu items a little, then this place woulod be well-nigh perfect. LesP - 3 Oct 2010 14:19 |
