The Old Bell, Old Oxted

Popped in today just after Midday on Sunday for a quick pint and a packet of crisps. I haven't been here for 20 years. Owned by Chef and Brewer chain. Large Car Park to side, smart enough interior with old beams etc. The bar was deserted apart from a couple at a table. Lunchtime diners were gathering in the back area for Sunday lunch. I asked a young lady laying tables in the bar for service. A fairly indifferent response resulted in a further wait before i was served by a fairly expressionless barman who turned up and charged me £5.22 for a very nice pint of Yardbird IPA and a bag of crisps. A good range of other Real Ales were available. I only had the one. Go here if you've loads of money, my wallet is still recovering.
Beer 10/10. Value for money 1/10. Overall experience 3/10.

The Black Lion Hotel, Little Walsingham

Popped in for a quick drink a couple of weeks ago. Three Ales on including Adnams and Woodfords which were good. Tables outside in front to sit at. We will go here again.

The Weavers, Southborough

We tried to have a drink here today ( Saturday lunchtime) but there was no one behind the bar to serve us. I did ask the men in the other bar to the side if anyone was serving. After a couple of minutes waiting we strolled up to The Imperial instead. Pretty hopeless really.

Crown Inn, Middleton

Popped in here Saturday lunchtime for a swift half. Outside paintwork on the pub looks a bit shabby but the two bar areas inside look smart. Large carpark outside. No draught beer on so i had a bottle of Old Speckled hen (half pint ? ) and my other half had a Sprite. £6 what a rip off. No dogs allowed. Limited seating area outside on a decking area with no garden and A47 roadnoise. Food orientated. Friendly bar lady. The ladies loo cistern handle was broken so it would not flush. We won't go back.

The Crispin Inn, Sandwich

Three of us plus the dog went here on a Friday evening in August for something to eat. Friendly barman and interesting food menu. Good range of beers in comfortable surroundings of a traditional old timber framed building. Food was around the £10 - £15 range and served within 20 minutes. I had the Goat meat Jamaican Style curry which was very good. One of our group had a very good fish dish. The Landlord is very keen on his food and came over and had a chat with us about the dishes. The pub was friendly and well run and coped very calmly when a customer felt unwell with a medical condition. Staff had to ask for a First Aider and move people to other tables with a minimum of fuss. The toilets were clean and tidy. We would go here again.

The New Inn, Sandwich

Three of us plus the dog went here on a Friday night in August. We wanted to eat and were told that food was being served although there was a funeral wake group in the bar. After spending about £10 on drinks and crisps and a half hour wait we noticed the table menus being removed. I caught a glimpse of the Chef speaking to the barmaid who i asked if there was food being served. She replied no. Then why waste our time if you know that food is not going to be served ? Remove the Menus and boards outside and tell people in advance. The beer was alright but the music was too loud. We left and had a good meal down the road at the The Crispin Inn. We will not be going back to the New Inn if we can help it.

The Four Elms Inn, Four Elms

Three of us plus the dog went in here last night. Friendly welcome from barman and the few locals in the public bar area. Harveys and Larkins available. Nice pint of the latter. Lovely fire in the inglenook fireplace kept burning whilst we enjoyed our drinks. Other areas of the pub used as restaurant and general seating with more plush furnishings. Toilets clean and tidy. Large carpark outside. This pub deserves a visit if you are passing. Occasional live music. Unpretentious and a welcome in the Public or the Saloon Bar if you are in work/ walking clothes or in smarter attire. We would go back here and try the food.

The Fighting Cocks, Horton Kirby

Three of us plus our dog visited here early Saturday evening. Food is served from 6pm. There was Old Speckled Hen and Doombar Real Ale on. A very nice pint of the latter served by a pleasant bar lady. Pub décor is smart with an Adult only area near the entrance and two rooms around the bar and a conservatory restaurant. There is a bar menu and a restaurant menu which is adequate with blackboard specials. We ordered the Lamb,Steak and the Venison meatball dishes which were served within 30 minutes. Generous portions ,however the lamb was a bit tasteless which was mentioned by one of our group. Our dog was welcomed and was allowed to sit at our feet in the bar area where we ate our meals. The toilets were clean and tidy. Meal prices were about the £10 - £15 range. There is a Car Park alongside the pub. By the time we left at 8pm a few other people had arrived but it wasn't busy. I enjoyed our visit and would go again. Apparently there is a pleasant garden and riverside to enjoy aswell.

Cross Keys, Tunbridge Wells

Popped in on a Sunday lunchtime for a swift half whilst walking the dog.Friendly staff, clean and tidy interior with bare floorboards style. Attractive conservatory and raised patio area overlooking the main road in front.Very pleasant garden with picnic tables at the back.Small car park to the side. Doombar and Harveys on draught. I could pop in again when they have live music on. It should have been busier on a Sunday lunchtime because it was quite pleasant. Our visit today deserves a 8/10.

The Barley Mow, Clifton Hampden

Two of us had a late lunch and drink here on Saturday 16th at about 3pm.There is a large Car Park across the road. The bar had a friendly barmaid and a few drinkers and diners in . Good choice of beer although the weakest was about 4.1% but tasted good . Reasonable menu choices available. We had the gammon steak and the Sirloin Steak which arrived within 15-20 minutes which was brought to our table in the pleasant garden area. I enjoyed it and I would visit again. The pub is part of the Chef and Brewer chain and retains a bit of character.

The Kentish Hare, Bidborough

Three of us plus the dog went here on Friday 6th June at 8.30pm. The pub has been refurbished with the heritage pastel shade exterior paint finish with stencilled detailing. The interior has had similar redecoration treatment and consists of a separate restaurant eating area, which we didn't go into, and the Library Bar. This has a wooden floor and appropriate decor for socialising with tables and chairs and bar stools. Dogs are welcome here. The pool table I seemed to recall has gone. It appears the entrance lobby has an area for muddy boots so walkers are probably still welcome. Both the areas had a few people in. There were three Real Ales on. I had to ask which was the weakest because the clips had no information apart from the name. Biddenden Cider was also on Draught and the bar staff were pleasant and friendly. A pint of Hare Bitter,Pint and a half of Biddenden Cider, packet of crisps and two portions of nuts came to £15.55 . The nuts were a mixture of salted nuts and cashews served in a small pot on a napkin on a saucer. There were no tear off the display and rip open packet nuts here as well as no dry roasted nuts. I was surprised at the cost of this modest round however the beer was very good. The toilets are near the entrance door and were very clean and tidy and the garden is level accessed through the well lit car park. There are picnic benches with parasols in a paved area set in attractive planting. The pub is very smart and I feel that one is paying for it with these prices. The phrase 'style over content' comes to mind when I am served a handful of nuts in this manner. This is quite a lucrative way to sell peanuts. We probably won't be going back here as it's not a village pub anymore. It is more like a select/ designer restaurant and drinking hole. My wallet is still recovering in therapy. Check the opening hours as I think it is closed on Mondays.
The rating I have given this establishment is based on the experience as a pub rather than a restaurant which is what I think people will come here for.

The Cowdray Arms, Balcombe

We went here Saturday lunchtime.Large Car Park.Nice outdoor seating area.Dog friendly.Pleasant attentive staff.Good menu reasonably priced, food arrived quickly, well presented.Guest beers available although we weren't drinking alcohol.Toilets clean and tidy.Part of the English Inns Pub chain i believe.First visited this pub over 25 years ago and it has always been alright on numerous visits.

The Kentish Hare, Bidborough

This pub is now called The Kentish Hare.

14 Jun 2014 22:17

The Nevill Crest and Gun, Eridge Green

The Royal Oak and Castle, Pevensey

We went in here at 6pm on a Sunday. The boards outside advertise the Sunday Roast @£8.95. Unfortunately the food was only served until 4.30pm when we asked. The pub is dog friendly and the bar area has a wooden floor and Heritage pastel shade decor with half anaglypta wallpaper. There was Harveys and another beer on draught. The beer and cider was nice. There were a few people enjoying a drink. The toilets were clean and tidy.We were surprised and a bit disappointed that they do not do food in the evening. We did not stay long as we wanted an early evening meal so we headed off.Our visit is rated as 7/10.

17 Mar 2014 00:00

The Beacon Hotel, Langton Green

Went in here on Saturday evening 8.30pm ish.It was not very busy.A few diners at the far end and a few people at the bar and tables who had all dispersed by about 10.20pm.Curious,as the Barman and serving staff were friendly. There was Harveys Best,Dartmoor and another draught beer as well as Stowford Press cider. These were enjoyed in comfortable surroundings with an open fire. We have been here a few times before at different times of year and it is very pleasant. The garden area with its view are popular in the summer. The Real Ales have included Timothy Taylor and other guest beers. The toilets are clean and tidy and there is a large car park. The pub is dog friendly.

3 Feb 2014 14:51

The Grenadier, Hove

Three of us went here one Sunday lunchtime in early December. Unfortunately dogs are not allowed. The bar staff were friendly. There was Harveys Best and Green King IPA on draught. The Harveys wasn't right but was changed to another pint of IPA no problem. We ordered the Mixed Grill,Steak and Ale pie and the Fish and Chips. All were served quickly with condiments and were very good. We sat at one end of the pub in a conservatory area where there were a couple of family groups and some elderly individuals enjoying their food. The centre room has tables and chairs for general use.Not sure about the far end of the pub.The toilets were clean and tidy.I think it is part of the 'Sizzling Pubs' chain. There is seating outside in better weather and a large Car Park.We would go here again.

11 Jan 2014 22:58

The Tiger Inn, East Dean

We went here at Lunchtime today.Friendly bar staff.Wilmington Long Blonde Ale and Cider very good.Generous Stilton ploughmans and tasty Tiger Burger.Dog friendly.Toilets clean and tidy.Very pleasant we'll visit again.

24 Sep 2013 23:15

The Rock, Chiddingstone Hoath

We went here Friday evening 21/06/13 via The Wheatsheaf at Bough Beech which seemed closed.
The Rock is a popular pub on a summer evening with groups outside and inside enjoying a good drink.Dogs are welcome. There was a mixture of customers from suit and tie to tradesmen characters. There were a few diners. The bar staff were friendly. There were two pumps of Larkins Ale brewed locally and another guest ale. There is a garden around the back with picnic tables on a grassed area. Two pints of Larkins, pint lime and soda and three packets of crisps came to £10.40.The Larkins was very good.I can understand some of the other comments about this pub.It can be a little off putting to some people making your way through lively groups around the entrance door and through to the bar.The view to the guest ale pump was obscured by a regular at the bar but i'm sure he would have moved aside for me.We would go here again. It is just the same as when i went here 25 years ago.The stone floor and decor makes one welcome if you had been out walking or in work clothes. The toilets were clean and tidy with soap and paper towels. The car park could fill up quickly.Several cars were parked down the lane.I think this is a proper pub for a proper drink and you just have to mix in.

24 Jun 2013 13:23

The Wheatsheaf, Bough Beech

We were nearby this pub on Friday evening 21st June and wanted to stop off for a quick drink on our way home. Our previous visit was not brilliant three years ago.We drove past and noticed a lack of cars in the carpark and the area unkempt with weeds growing. The doors were shut with no sign of life.I think the pub has closed.
We turned off the main road and made our way to The Rock near Chiddingstone Hoath.

24 Jun 2013 11:19

Mount Edgcumbe, Tunbridge Wells

Three of us went here on Saturday evening 15/06/13.Our dog was allowed in aswell. The Bar staff were friendly. There was Larkins,Harveys Best and Dartford Wobbler Real Ale and Stowford Press? Cider on Draught. All of these were sampled and were very good. The Bar had a good mixture of age groups with some people dining in the other room around the corner. The building has been constructed over one of the sandstone outcrops on Tunbridge Wells Common. This creates the unusual feature of some of the comfy seating situated within cave recesses off the main bar area. The toilets were clean and tidy with good hand washing facilities. For warmer evenings there is outdoor seating around the back.We have been here several times before and it is consistently good.We will come again.

17 Jun 2013 15:27

Dorset Arms, Lewes

We went here on Saturday lunchtime and sat outside at one of the tables. The Harveys Best and Knots of May Bitter was good so too was the Cider. The barmaid was friendly and the food we ordered was brought to us quickly. The lunch menu was not extensive but we enjoyed three different main courses around the £10 - £12 mark each. The toilets were clean and tidy although the gents had run out of soap. I was disappointed that there was no Harveys John Hop low alcohol bitter available as i was driving. There is no pub car park..The public car park opposite is expensive during the day if you can find a space.Fortunately one of us had a disabled parking badge and there are several spaces available. Our experience today deserves an 8/10.We would go here again.

18 May 2013 22:52

The Golden Galleon, Exceat

We popped in here on Bank Holiday Monday at about 3.30pm.The weather was sunny and the pub was very busy inside and out.We were served after a few minutes waiting in a queue that stretched around the bar. There was Harveys Best and Hoptimus on draught. The hoptimus was very nice. The barman remained cheerful whilst he was working very hard in the circumstances. The serving staff were kept busy.We had a walk and returned a couple of hours later for further refreshments. The same barman was there still serving. He looked hot,i think he looked two foot shorter than earlier. He must have melted a bit .The serving staff remained cheerful including the one we spoke to who was friendly even though she was finishing her shift at 6pm and had had a busy day.The pub is located at a very popular spot for walkers on the South Downs and Seven Sisters Country Park.On a Bank Holiday it is bound to be busy so food orders are going to take longer as i overheard. The pub was coping pretty well. The Toilets were clean and tidy although the soap dispenser had broken under the strain. The Ants on the table outside stood motionless supping the drips of beer from the bottom of glasses. They had had enough. Our visit deserves an 8/10.We will go back again.

11 May 2013 22:30

The Six Bells, Billingshurst

Three of us went here Saturday lunchtime. The car park off the road leads through a gate to the pub garden with benches and tables to sit.The half timbered exterior building sits in this attractive setting. There was a King and Barnes and a Badger bitter on draught. However as i was driving i had a Becks alcohol free lager. The barman was friendly and efficient. The two dogs with us were allowed in although one of our group felt a hint of unwelcome atmosphere particularly from the lady behind the bar who was possibly the landlady. There was a good selection of food which was served quickly. The rear of the pub has a large dining area.We sat just outside this area because of the dogs.We enjoyed desserts and tea/coffee afterwards and stayed here for a few hours. The toilets and hand washing facilities were very clean and tidy.We will not go here again due to the attitude from the landlady whose manner made one of our party feel unwelcome and not relaxed and comfortable. There are plenty of other places we can go to instead so our experince here gets a 6/10.

5 May 2013 22:04

Royal Oak Inn, Staffhurst Wood

We went in here on May Day Bank Holiday Sunday at about 3.30pm.There was no friendly welcome from either of the two barmen, just a warning not to take our dog into one half of the bar where the Landlord's unfriendly Rottweiler languished underneath one of the tables. If i hadn't already ordered the drinks we would have gone elsewhere.
Excellent range of well kept beers, pleasant views from the tables outdoors. The Pub has been extended to provide more of a restaurant area.I haven't visited this Pub for over twenty years. We will probably leave it for another twenty years as one of our group was very put out by the unwelcome attitude of the staff. The pub sign outside says it is award winning. This does not refer to the hospitality and host skills of the staff. The beer was 8/10 but does not refer to any other aspect of our visit.

5 May 2013 20:09

The Kentish Hare, Bidborough

Popped in here New Years Day for a quick pint whilst walking the dog.Wooden floors in Village bar wellington friendly.Dog friendly.Friendly Landlord serving Harveys Best Bitter which was good.Newspapers on the bar.Pub was fairly empty when i arrived but filled up suddenly when a couple of large family groups of walkers came in.I'll pop in again.

2 Jan 2013 16:11

The Sun Inn, Bentworth

We went here 29/12/12 in the early evening. Our two dogs were welcome.Old style cosy beamed pub with open fires.Good range of real ales (about 4 i think).I had "Swift One" my friends had "Timothy Taylor Landlord" and a glass of the house Red wine. All very good.We had booked an early table for food.Good menu including specials and a Gluten free menu aswell. For starters we had the mushrooms, the whitebait and the vegetable soup of the day.For mains we had the burger from the Gluten free menu, the Roast beef and veg in a large Yorkshire pudding and the fish in sauce with prawns. The service was friendly ,quick and efficient. We were asked at least twice if everything was alright by different staff members. The pub was busy. The second sitting of diners arrived at 8pm for our table which we had to vacate.Unfortunately one has to stand at the bar as all the tables are reserved for diners. It would have been nice to continue sitting down to finish our drinks. The prices are slightly higher (£12.95 for the roast Beef) but it is good and well presented with generous portions. It should be noted that The Sun is a Pub that does good food and it is not a restaurant.Pity about the Reserved labels on every table.
There are a couple of Car Parks which fill quickly. The country lane had cars parked along it which showed they were busy.We will go here again if we can book a table.

2 Jan 2013 14:27

The Lord Nelson, Southwold

Went in here 6th Sept in the evening.Popular pub with a good few people in.Dog friendly. The Adnams Explorer was very good.It felt it had a different atmosphere to to Red Lion on the green.

12 Sep 2012 15:57

The Sole Bay Inn, Southwold

We went here in the evening on 4th Sept. The Adnams Topaz Gold and the Adnams bitter was very good.Tables outside on the street.A nice quick pint.
Excellent range of Adnams available.

12 Sep 2012 15:48

The Red Lion, Southwold

We went in here 3rd Sept for something to eat.The Adnams Ghostship was very good so too was the fish and chips.Friendly barman and general atmosphere inside, dog friendly pub.Food arrived quickly.Pleasant young lady bringing out food as we sat outside. Several tables available to enjoy the comings and goings on the green. The toilets were clean and tidy with good hand washing facilities. Our experience this evening deserves a 9/10

12 Sep 2012 15:34

Pier Bar, Southwold

We went here 3rd Sept in the evening.Last time we were here it was like a pub on the pier where you could just go in and order a beer. This time there were lots of people having food.No dogs allowed inside. You were pounced on by a keen waitress before you even got to the bar to view the excellent selection of Adnams available. We enjoyed two pints of the Blonde Beer 'Spindrift' served in a vase type glass. The outside seating area was very pleasant.I wondered if the high cost of the two beers included a waitress charge as they were brought to our table. The beer was 10/10.The pub or should i say restaurant experience was 5/10.

12 Sep 2012 15:21

The Hope Inn, Newhaven

We went here on Jubilee Bank Holiday Monday at lunchtime. We had the Fish and Chips and the Mullet stuffed with cous cous served with red cabbage and carrots from the blackboard menu.We had a half of Wadworths Red white and Blue Ale and a half of the other guest Ale.Both very good and the food good. The bar staff and the Landlady were pleasant. We could sit indoors by the window enjoying the view with our dog sitting at our feet. The pub dog came over to us and made friends too.The toilets were clean and tidy.Another 8/10 from us.

8 Jun 2012 14:15

The New Inn, Uckfield

I went here yesterday for a funeral wake in the function room next to the main bar.I think it may have changed ownership recently. The function room is a reasonable size served from a quaint hatch across the entrance foyer. The anaglypta and half boarded interior decor seems to be freshly decorated. There was Harveys Best and Harveys Hadlow Bitter on draught.I had a pint of the latter at 3 a pint.It was very good. The landlord was friendly. The main bar visible through the serving hatch had a few early evening drinkers in.There is seating outside the front on the road and a car park beside the pub.The Gents toilet is round the back in a separate outbuilding which is charmingly old fashioned - it was probably open air once upon a time. The outside of the pub looks freshly painted and a bit smarter from when i have driven past in previous years.I think this pub has character and will benefit from its revamp as long as is does not go into the pastel heritage shades gastro pub poncification territory. The beer was 10/10.

8 Jun 2012 13:56

The Imperial, Southborough

We popped in here for a quick drink on the Saturday afternoon before Christmas. The pub has been redecorated and our dog was allowed in.The Shepherd Neame Spitfire was very nice which was enjoyed with a couple of large bags of crisps. We will go here again. It was very pleasant.

12 Jan 2012 12:46

The Half Moon, Hildenborough

We popped in here on a Sunday lunchtime in November whilst walking the dogs.We were made to feel welcome. The Otter Ale was very nice. The bar has various seating areas, open fireplace, darts,tv.The toilets were clean and tidy.We would go here again with the dogs because they were contented here aswell.

12 Jan 2012 12:40

The Hope Inn, Newhaven

We revisited this pub on Saturday 5th November at about 1.30pm.We knew the beer was good and that our dog would be welcome so we returned to try the food. There were a few lunchtime customers inside. There was London Pride and Harvey's on draught.I had a nice pint of the London Pride and my other half had a half of the Harvey's.We ordered the fish and chips from the bar menu (9.50) and the Monkfish on pasta (8.50) from the blackboard. This arrived within 15 minutes and we enjoyed this whilst sitting at a table outside on the decking area overlooking the harbour mouth. The fish and chips was served with peas and tartare sauce and was a generous portion. The Monkfish was served with a tomato and herb sauce on tagliatelli and had the appearance of a large starter and not a main course. However the fish had a good texture and flavour.Condiments were brought out to us by the other lady from the bar.I had the Pumpkin Tart with cream and my other half had the mint ice cream for dessert. This was very nice and enjoyed with an alcohol free Becks lager. The Ladies and Gents toilets were clean and tidy with soap and water and a working hand dryer. When we were leaving the lady asked if i had enjoyed the Monkfish
which i had.I thought it inappropriate to tell her in front of her other customers that the portion could have been larger. All in all we had a very pleasant experience of good hospitality in agreeable surroundings so this deserves a 7 1/2 out of 10.

7 Nov 2011 22:20

The Horse and Groom, Rushlake Green

We popped in here on Saturday 15th October for a quick drink at about 6pm.Our dog was allowed in the bar area. There was Shepherd Neame Late Red,Spitfire and Harvey's Best on draught. The friendly barmaid served us a pint of Late Red,Spitfire, half Oranjeboom pint of lime and soda two packs of ready salted crisps and a bag of nuts for 12.20.We sat near the burning log fire which was topped up by the young barman. The pub has timber beams and horse brasses type decor which was not overdone. At one end of the pub looked like a restaurant area. There were food specials on the blackboards which looked tempting. We left just before 7pm and enjoyed our brief stop here.We would like to return and try the food. The beer was good. The gents toilet was clean and tidy with soap and cold water and a hand dryer. The wall mounted water heater did not seem to work. Our experience deserves a 7/10.

17 Oct 2011 13:55

The Hope Inn, Newhaven

We popped in here on Wednesday 28th September at around 6pm.It had been a hot sunny day. There were a few people in the Pub.There was Harveys and Black Sheep on draught. We had a pint of Black Sheep, lime and soda and a couple of bags of crisps for about 4.70 i think. We had our dog with us which was allowed in the bar area. The kind landlord gave us a couple of dog biscuits aswell. We sat outside on the bench. There are also tables outside with a pleasant view across the harbour mouth towards Seaford. This pub is 'under new management' the sign outside said and they were having an opening night on the Friday. We will go here again and try the food.A very pleasant end to a good day on the beach.

5 Oct 2011 11:41

The Black Horse, Rottingdean

We went in here at about 1.30pm on Sunday 5th June. The public bar was empty and i asked the friendly barmaid if we could bring our dog inside and order some food. She said yes.The roast could be ordered after 2 pm because the barman/chef had changed the menu back to the roast because the weather forecast had changed from hot and sunny to cool and wet that day and probably thought the roast more appropriate.I enjoyed a good pint of Greene King London Glory and my partner had a lime and soda and 2 packs of cheese and onion crisps for 5.80.We ordered the lamb roast for each of us and a half of London Glory. The roast was 7.50 per person and arrived within 20 minutes. The portion was very generous and well presented with condiments and mint sauce separate on a side plate. We were asked a couple of times by the friendly barman/ chef if everything was alright which it was.The public bar area had a useful spartan interior with a few tables and chairs on a lino type floor,a cosy low ceiling daubed with nautical maps. There was a dartboard and a shove h'apenney and a doorway to an outside smoking area. The woodgrain effect scumbling was quite convincing on many features. You could feel welcome in this bar if you were in work clothes or walking attire. For the more smartly dressed you could sit in the saloon bar which could be accessed via a doorway from the public bar which passed through a cosy snug seating area or from the street. The Saloon bar is more plush and lighter which is where the toilets are. Both the Ladies and Gents were clean and tidy with soap and hand drier. There were a few other customers here. One couple also had their dog with them. The pub is an old building dating from the 16th Century. It is good to visit a traditional pub with a Public and Saloon bar and a cosy snug.
A similar roast in an overstyled modern image establishment would probably cost 11.95
Our experience today deserves an 8 out of 10.

5 Jun 2011 20:24

The White Horse, Steyning

We went in here on Saturday 30th at 3.15pm for a quick drink.I had a lovely pint of Tully's English Ale which was tasty and only 2.8%.My other half had a half of Cider which was good. Our dog was allowed in the bar area. The pub had a good few people inside and outside. We sat outside at one of the tables. The drinks cost 5.35 which is pricey. The pub looked smart, spacious and modern although i am wary of pubs that get the Heritage pastel shades paint job in satin or eggshell finishes. We enjoyed our drinks and if we were in Steyning again would consider going here to try the food.

30 Apr 2011 21:51

The Badgers Watch, Peacehaven

We went here on Tuesday 26th April at about 1.15pm for a quick drink. Our dog was allowed in the bar area. The staff were pleasant and welcoming .We ordered two pints of the Reverend James bitter at 3.05 a pint which although slightly cloudy was very tasty and two packs of their cheese and onion crisps. We sat outside on the terrace which overlooks the sea. This seating area was clean and tidy. The toilets are upstairs and were clean and tidy with soap and hand drier. There were a few other customers enjoying food. The other beers available were Spitfire and Harvey's Best Bitter. The pub did not look untidy and ravaged even after a Bank Holiday Weekend.

30 Apr 2011 21:22

The New Inn, Winchelsea

We revisited this pub on Friday 8th April at 12.15pm.It was warm enough to sit in the garden. This was well kept and planted with the grass recently cut and several tables available. Our dog was on a lead and enjoyed the surroundings. The barman and his assistant were pleasant and friendly. The bar had a few other customers in.The Greene King IPA was a very nice pint. The food was ordered and arrived fairly quickly. The Abbott Ale was good as well.We ordered the fish and chips which was served with peas and tartare sauce. The portion was adequate. The other meal ordered was the duck breast with a potato, leek and spinach compote. This looked quite small on the large square plate but was filling and tasty. The dishes were on the higher price side as our previous visit last year but nicely presented. The gents was clean and tidy with hot water and soap for handwashing with a dryer. The ladies was in a similar state according to my other half and her friend.I noticed that smokers are catered for with a covered pagoda type shed building with seating across the car park where a couple who had been at the bar had retired to for a cigarette. It is good to see smokers catered for in this manner as it can look bad seeing crowds around the entrance to a pub desperately satisfying their craving amid a carpet of old Filter tips.

The Kings Head, Woodbridge

We went here on 22/09/10 in the evening. The friendly barman served us a very nice pint of Adnams Explorer and Adnams bitter plus a nice half of the Broadside later on.The bar had a good mix of drinkers and a few diners in the other room. The outdoor seating overlooks the town square which is where we sat and enjoyed our drinks.A pint of Explorer,Adnams bitter and two packs of nuts cost 7.50.

The Sole Bay Inn, Southwold

We went here just before 6pm for a bite to eat.The pleasantly decorated bar had a few drinkers and some other diners in.The bar lady was friendly and said we could order our food even though it was not quite 6pm for their evening menu to start .Unfortunately i was driving so i was glad that two lime and sodas were only 1.30.There was a tantalisingly full range of Adnams available,so there should be -I could see the brewery out of the window. The Fish and Chips with salad was about 10.50 and made with Adnams in the batter mix - very nice and it arrived within 15 minutes. The Gents toilet was clean and tidy with soap, water and hand dryer. This pub should be good as it is only a stones throw from the brewery.

Red Lion, Martlesham

We went in here after a walk on Monday 20th at about 2.40pm.The bar area was not busy.We enquired about food and the Barman was very friendly, helpful and attentive advising us on ordering our food where we could sit and if we wanted a tab set up.We ordered two pints of the Adnams Bitter which was very good.Adnams Broadside was also available as well.I ordered the Vegetarian Butternut squash and bean pie with the sweet potato chips and salad. My other half had the Moroccan style lamb burger with sweet potato chips and salad. The food was served within 15 minutes, nicely presented and a reasonable portion. My vegetarian dish was tasty and not a poor substitute for a meat dish.I am not vegetarian. My other half's meal was good too.The friendly barman brought me another pint of Adnams as we were sitting outside. The Gents toilet was clean with soap and water and a working hand dryer. For a Pub Chain this was very good particularly the Barman's attitude as he finished his shift whilst we were there but was still helpful up to his finishing time. His female colleague was also very pleasant when i settled the bill at the end.

The Barley Mow, Friskney

We went here on Wednesday 21st July in the evening. The staff were friendly and helpful even though they were busy. They had an interesting food menu ,locally sourced, including the Ostrich Steak and Grimsby Haddock(not cheap but high quality).Portions were a good size and nicely presented.Soft drinks (Lime & Soda) were reasonably priced as we were driving. The service was quick. The garden was extremely clean and tidy and nicely planted. The Gent's toilet was clean and tidy aswell.Generally very impressed.

Royal Oak, Wainfleet

We went in here Tuesday 20th July in the evening. We found the staff attentive and acknowledged you when you came in.The Batemans XXXB and XB was very nice. The outdoor seating area was very pleasant, clean and tidy and nicely planted. There were a few locals and a couple of other visitors enjoying the surroundings.A much nicer staff welcome here than compared to The Woolpack and The Red Lion in the same village.

Woolpack Hotel, Wainfleet

We went here Sunday evening 18/7/10 and took a while to get served even though they weren't busy. The Batemans XB was very nice. The barman seemed miserable and only had Prawn Cocktail or Steak and Onion crisps which were chucked on the bar in passing after we paid.No food so we left after one drink.Hundreds of cigarette ends outside the front door gave it a shabby appearance.

The New Inn, Winchelsea

We stopped here today 3/5/10 at about 12.30 lunchtime. Both of us did not want to drink alcohol and were pleased that 2 pints of lime and soda were only 1.20.The bar area and tables were clean with a few customers eating. There was a good log fire providing a pleasant warmth as it was chilly today. The bar staff were friendly and we ordered food which arrived within 15 mins. The ham egg and chips was very good with good chips ,good proper carved ham and dark yolked eggs. The belly of pork was nicely done with a sauce and side dish of vegetables. We were brought condiments and asked twice during the meal if everything was alright. After the meal we went through to the games bar area where the decor was smart but less plush and enjoyed a game of bar billiards. There was also a fruit machine and a smart separate darts area with a new board which looked inviting. The gents toilet was clean with hot water and paper towels and soap as was the ladies according to my other half.I would visit here again as the Greene King and Abbott Ales looked tempting. The food was on the higher price side for a pub but well cooked and nicely presented. My other half's portion size was generous and mine was sufficient.

The Wheatsheaf, Bough Beech

I have very occasionally used this pub for nearly 25 years.Last nights visit (23/04/10,8.30-11.30 pm)left me thinking that for non drinkers or drivers the soft drink prices were extortionate. The service was slow and confused even though the pub was not busy. The soft drinks were served from individual bottles which always makes them more expensive and not from a dispensing gun.The pint of Westerham Ales Grasshopper Bitter was very nice and my friend's Biddenden Cider was too. This was a small consolation to those in my party who were drinking soft drinks.Because of this we will find another pub to meet at in future.
