Very expensive cask beer.
Fish though was fresh and had a light batter.
Atmosphere is ok but could be a fantastic pub.
Tip: staff should wear uniforms.

I don't believe it this pub is the same as the Kings Head in Orford charging over the odds on the duty exempt beer! What is it about Orford that they feel they can rip the customer off by charging over the odds? Presumably they rely on customers on holiday who don't really check what things cost and blindly pay the charges. More fool them is all I can say because if a pub is ripping them off to the tune of 75 pence a pint what must they be ripping them off on the more expensive items like food? I shudder to think, oh well another pub I won't be visiting again in Orford!

This is, and has always been, a Pub that time forgot (thank God).
We have'nt been there for a bit due to the shifting bar on the sea approaches but when we last called there was a chart available from behind the bar for a pound from a local who had taken up to date chart soundings to help yachts.
A totally brilliant old, unspoiled Pub!
- WARNING: not to be confused with "The Jolly Sailor'S' " Pakefield, Lowestoft whch is a plastic microwave eatary (look it up)...
Elleven out of ten...

Visited Friday to try the place very dissapointed with lots of aspects of the place, but most of all the food was cold and the first pint of bitter was off. Never again.

Under new ownership the last landlord run the place down with expensive food and beer, the new landlord has changed very little but the problem is they have no idea of how to run a pub. Terrible place shame as it`s in a nice position a good landlord would really do this pub proud. But not this Landlord.

New Manager No menu, No Hot Food, Bar Staff did not understand English (asian) cant believe it but it,s true.

This is a fascinating pub set in the delightful town of Orford. When we visited at Easter, we were lucky enough to be able to enjoy the weather outside in the garden but dont worry if the weather is bad, the interior of the building is charming. The beer was fine with descent service and prices. As with others, I took advantage of a lovely drop of Oyster stout.

A really nice pub. Good Adnams, nice atmosphere, and the filled baguettes were properly filled, with a good dollop of salad as well. About the only thing I could find even slightly wrong is that the open fire was roaring away on a sunny April afternoon so we sat outside.

Excellent pub. Visited on a clear, cold week day in early March 2011 for a pint and some late lunch, and walked in to a very friendly welcome from the young barman - obviously well brought up! The fire in a huge old inglenook at the end of the very quiet, cosy bar was blasting away, which was very welcome given the crisp weather. It looks to be a bit of a 'flagship' Adnams house, in a very good way that is, and as such had things like Oyster and Lighthouse on. Lighthouse went down very well, and it was a shame I was driving.
The staff and chef/landlord were excellent and the barmaid took a particular shine to my mother's rather eccentric dog - the liberal giving of pre-placed chews from a tub on the bar seem to be the order of the day.
[NB: I've given this pub 10/10 for beer, given that's what this site's about. Food was by and large excellent, with a gorgeous grilled cod, but let down to 7/10 by an *exceptionally* hot lemon meringue pie. This was the only blip.]

What a superb pub! Very warm welcome from the owner and staff, serving excellent Adnams beers in tip top condition. I even had a pint changed before I tasted any as the next pint pulled emptied the barrel. So the lady barmaid sought us out and changed my pint! What customer service! The food is excellent, we have eaten here on numerous occasions, including Christmas day lunch and the food has always been very good. The owner is sometimes behind the bar on quieter days, as he does a lot of the cooking, but he is very entertaining when he is. The Fish and Chips are to die for, the home made burgers are fabulous and the calves liver is cooked just right, excellent! A superb pub in a superb location, serving good beer, great food, and a warm welcome. Heaven!

Went here at lunch time with my 5yr old. As others say it is a truly beautiful old pub with lots of charm, nooks and crannies. Ordered food, which unfortunately got lost somewhere along the way - but was quickly remedied by who i think was the landlady - who was very nice and didnt make a fuss especially when I sent it back as the beef sandwich had horseradish sauce on it when we didnt ask for it.
Its a lovely pub and really has far more character than the other pubs in orford

We received such a lovely welcome from the landlord and landlady of the pub. The room we stayed in was perfect, with a Nespresso coffe machine, tea making facilities, TV with freeview and DVD player, hairdryer and all you could need in the bathroom. The food was great, with an extensive menu, to suit all need. My kids loved the food, and the lovely garden and orchard. Just a stones throw away from the quay. A lovely place to visit and stay.

Stayed in Orford and went to this pub twice. The first time we ate; the menu was extensive and varied; good value and delicious. The service is very good. We wanted to move from the large table reserved for us to a smaller one. This was sorted out quickly and with good humour. The pub is an Adnams one, and had three good real ales from their range. There was also a roaring wood stove at one end of the bar and a smaller one at the other, fantastic on a cold night. What is more the pub rambles over three rooms, very atmosperic Fairly busy without being packed, will certainly come back when next in the vicinity.

Haven't visited this pub for a while and on my last visit I remembered it as being emphatically anti-family. Visiting Orford with my children this weekend I was delighted to see they now welcome children (and dogs and parrots). We had lunch there, and the food was excellent without being pretentious- you could still get chips and the kids got ice cream. Staff were friendly and most imprtantly the Adnams beers were in excellent condition.Thoroughly recommended.

Beautiful location, with a lovely garden adjacent to an orchard and overlooking fields and the Ness in the distance. Range of Adnams ales, well kept but rather expensive. Food is tasty, well presented, and healthy portions, and seafood is a speciality. Good value, given the quality. It's nice that the Jolly Sailor is not trying to be a gastro-pub. Rather, it is a nice pub that serves good food. Definitely recommended.

No one-trick pony. Had a great stay this weekend with friends. Both rooms that we occupied were great and well furnished. Hospitality by the owners perfect. Dinner was superb and the breakfast set us up for the day. The Jolly Sailor is a little jewel in Suffolk. Thoroughly recommended.

What a breath of fresh air - new management - and someone who is interesting and interested. My wife and I spent last July in Orford and I had the misfortune to visit this pub. The previous landlord was ghastly - just rude and ignorant. On Friday evening after watching the two fishing boats unload a bountiful catch on the Quay, we walked past the pub and I tried the door. It was locked, but on seeing us, the landlord opened up and poured the perfect pint. He sat with us and talked about his business and empathy with the locality. Great place to sit in front of wood burner and pass the time. I hope it is well supported by the locals and weekenders. Use it or lose it, as they say.

We have just returned from a week in Suffolk and I wanted to tell you about a wonderful pub and bed & breakfast we stayed in the quaint village of Orford. The Jolly Sailor is eqsquisite, it has recently been taken over by a new Landlord and the atmosphere, food and ales are wonderful. We stayed in the Oar room which has been tastefully redecorated with amazaing soft furnishings. We have two dogs and two children and we were all made to feel so welcome. We ate there on two evenings and the food, homemade fish and chips and sea bass made the taste buds go wild.
I would highly recommend this pub.

Ive visited the Jolly Sailor three times on weekend breaks from London and Im so excited that they now have stunning luxury rooms to stay in to go with the fantastic pub downstairs. Between the open fires, dogs, children, laughter, friendly staff and great home cooked food (regardless of what you order) an evening here cannot fail to leave you warm and fuzzy. Ill keep coming back as long as the current management stay put!

Went to this pub weekend 22-24 Nov 08. A huge improvement with the new managers - very friendly staff and customers. Food was excellent. Will definitely go back and would recommend. Dogs welcomed with treats.
|
Visited this fantastic village inn on Monday 3rd November for lunch....very good quality food, a perfect pint (or 3) of Adnams Broadside , a choice of jug or straight glass and an unspoilt rustic bar. Perfect! I'll be back............

The new landlord really is a delight. We had supper there three nights this week and the food was delicious, the service efficient and very friendly. Overall this is a proper pub which welcomes all (including the dog) for a drink or a meal. The complete cross-section of friendly people we met there made our stay in this beautiful part of Suffolk very enjoyable. ps Don't go to the Kings Head, the food was awful and more expensive.
|
This Jolly Sailor is really jolly with its new landlord who appears to delight in serving excellent food, loving kids, dogs, yachties, fisherman and all sorts in between and just being welcoming.
Good real food, look at the new chart/map room and all the other changes.
Look forward to more of the same

This pub has a new landlord now who is much nicer than the last, they have completely changed the menu and the food is lovely, I had the most gorgeous seabass there, it was so fresh and had apparently come from the fish stall on the Quay that morning. They have opened up another room as a restaurant and the place is much cleaner. I would recommend giving it a go under the new management.

landlord dosent seem to know how to smile and realted to the karloffs i believe ugh.... needs lessons in friendly pub management THIS PUB TO BE AVOIDED DONT GO NEAR THIS MAN HE IS AN UGLY ANNOYING FAT REDFACED PIG
|
A lovely old pub, with lots of atmosphere and a delightful character landlady. MUCH more fun than the King's Head. Who wants children in pubs anyway? Few are well-behaved, and most have awful, show-off middle-class parents who think they own the world.

A good pub, well managed ale and decent grub. Staff tend to discourage noisy families, but then this is a pub, not a playground.
|
A propper pub serving first class beer, good service and simple but well cooked food can't ask for more than that!
|
Known locally as the "Miserable Mariner".
Nuff said.
Avoid.
