Went to this place for lunch (not for the first time) and we found the food to be dreadful and the lady who served us rude. The fish & chips were OK (no mushy peas) but the liver and bacon was truly shocking - bacon barely cooked, raw cabbage, and strange tasting liver too!! I truly don't know how they can justify their steepish prices. The one good thing to be said for this place is the lovely rural location and large family garden area. Will not return!

The Shortlands Tavern, Shortlands
Passing in the car the other day - couldn't help noting that this pub looked as if it might have closed down. There were old window boxes that hadn't been changed for ages, the blinds were firmly closed, and was in need of a lick of paint or two.

A little pricey perhaps - but it's certainly worth it. If you pay peanuts you get monkeys after all.
26 Jun 2011 14:51
The site looks set to become a Wetherspoons - with the usual late night boozing, and the rest to be expected. Another reason to avoid going anywhere near the high street after about 7pm. Grrrrr!!

Walkabout has indeed been replaced by another rather dubious looking 'establishment'.
15 Aug 2010 20:45
Not any more. As of today it appears Bromley is a Walkabout free zone. Couldn't help noticing when passing in the car this morning. The frontage was in the process of being revamped. Will be Interesting to see what happens.

Went to The Bickley with my Dad for our Xmas get together. The interior is a transformation - a lot of money has been spent on this fine old building - and it looks superb. It had just gone mid-day when we arrived and was already quite busy, but the young bar staff were very friendly, and the service was good. Food was nice, and the portions generous - all be it a little pricey, and my pint of Bombardier was slightly lacklustre. Would like to see a few more REAL ALES on tap too - given there appeared only to be a couple. All things considered though - this pub is a BIG improvement on its former self. Am pleasantly surprised to have to eat my words on this one.

I was about to give them a 0.5/10. Nah - on second thoughts that would be flattering to deceive. A big fat zero from me too.

Can hardly wait.. Still, it may just be what is needed there. I doubt it - but you never know.

One of Bromley's finest shite holes without doubt. A veritable Aladdin's Cave for the Chav element!

Beer is very good here, although I suppose it should be at around 3 for a pint. Never had a duff drink yet (hope that will not be the kiss of death) The staff are now far more pleasant, which ALWAYS makes such a big difference - seeing as they have always been very efficient. The best pub in Bromley high street with out doubt.

With the exception of almost being used as a human sick bag by a lets' say 'well tanked up fellow' in the gents - I still enjoyed my visit to the Freelands Tavern - as mentioned on previous posts it has changed hands. Since my last visit two years ago - it is now much cleaner, lighter and roomy. Two ales on tap, both were well kept and pleasant.

Ye Old Stationmaster, Chislehurst
Was the Bickley Arms for many moons (centuries in fact) before being renamed as the 'Ye Old Station Master' circa 1997. Then it descended into becoming a nasty, dirty dive for the next decade. Re launched as 'The Bickley' - (see under other pubs in Chislehurst) a couple of years ago. Although I haven't been there since its relaunch, friends & family members have, and have been impressed with its newly acquired standards of food & drink. Will pay it a visit one day.

Sadly, I have to agree with the previous posters' comments regarding the indifference of the bar staff. Some of them are bordering on being just plain rude. This is an issue that needs to be addressed IMO. A jolly shame given the Partridge is one of my favorite pubs in the area.

Yes, It really is too bad that decent proper pubs are closing everywhere at an alarming rate. Yet awful crud holes like this still appear to be thriving. No justice at all. Yikes!
13 Mar 2009 17:20
Cant say it comes as much of a surprise. Lasted all of a year - if that. Hopefully the original building, formerly (The Bell) will be sympathetically restored to its former glory one day - It really deserves better than this.
30 Jan 2009 01:09
A notice in the window says it has been closed down owing to a 'criminal investigation'. All looks very fishy indeed! Really doesn't come as a huge surprise though, with this particular watering hole (emphasis being on HOLE)
- Good riddance!! Hopefully it will be replaced with a more civilized hostelry.
16 Nov 2008 20:41
Not a bad little watering hole all- in- all. A touch on the pricey side now though.

Correction:
My comments on 18 July 2007 were intended for The Purbeck HOUSE Hotel which is also in Swanage - not for this establishment. We never even visited or knew of this place! My fault, although admittedly the two place names are very similar.

Still the best pub anywhere near Bromley high street (wouldn't be difficult mind you) Ales are kept nicely -London Pride, Discovery esp. The staff are always efficient, and the tables are cleared/cleaned promptly when customers leave. Solid furniture and plenty of marble lends some class to The Partridge(formerly a bank)

Agree with 'bromleyjon' and his comments about Jane Austen. Had the misfortune of passing this fine old building the other evening. Sadly it was awash with chavs queueing outside and little tartie types hanging out of the windows calling out to their mates on the street below -innit. Such a shame given it's history; once a fine hotel and famous coaching inn - now its just another defaced high street wine bar type. SOS Pleease!

The Ramblers Rest, Chislehurst
Agree with the last posters comments(on the 7th March)Have been to the RR many times - and the 'vinegar' reference for me is nonsense too.
10 Mar 2008 01:12
Absolutely spot on 'rpadam' - Couldn't agree more with your comments about "anon-o-anus" or whatever his/her name is.
10 Feb 2008 00:44
Always looked like an utter shite hole whenever I passed it. Is now closed methinks/hopes.
8 Feb 2008 01:21
Went there recently and plumped for one of their guest ales - after one sip wished that I had not, because it tasted distinctly of the disinfectant used to clean out the pumps. Still, it was replaced with the minimum of fuss with an adequate pint of old speckled hen. Which rather sums up this pub really 'adequate' Feel it could do with something of a make over though - a bit dated really.

Cosy, welcoming little pub tucked well away from the bustle of Bromley(North) high street. Spitfire and Whitstable ales are excellent (no longer serving Whitstable - alas) but still have a decent range of ales. Unfortunately genuine pubs like this are becoming an endangered species in Bromley.
26 Jul 2007 21:19
Tucked away from the Westerham to Bromley main arterial road route. Only accessible via narrow-ish country lanes going to/from Knockholt (via Rushmore Hill) Very pleasant, quiet location, & the beers and ales are fine too. Unfortunately in recent visits the food standard has fallen. - The commitment is just not there. Real shame, but this place is still well worth a visit.

The Red Lion Inn, Shoreham by Sea
Very pleasant watering hole, and convenient for Shoreham airport which is just opposite. A couple of pilot friends were regulars there when they lived in Shoreham & recommended it. Not too keen on the food though.
23 Jul 2007 00:39
Feels more like you are walking into the basement of a church, rather than a boozer, (never been upstairs)
Anyway beers are cheap & cheerful - nothing too special though. Handy meeting place for West End theatres, National Gallery, & Trafalgar Square et al.
21 Jul 2007 00:38
An honest down to earth sort of boozer. OK if you want a quick pint after work. However, found the manager was rude and arrogant, treating customers & staff with contempt in equal measures. Hope hes moved on.
20 Jul 2007 00:19
Sensational view of Corfe Castle in the distance from the beer garden.
19 Jul 2007 21:12
Stayed at The Castle a couple of years ago, and we really enjoyed our stay. Very eccentric hotel but is full of character. Two separate bar areas downstairs -one quite 'trendy' - more like a wine bar, the other more traditional and comfortable with a good range of beers and ales, food et al. Well worth a visit (along with the Cherub Inn) just up the road.
19 Jul 2007 14:58
Super boozer, in a lovely location. Good ales, and a welcoming atmosphere, real wood fires too. Will definitely return there one day. A real one off.
19 Jul 2007 14:46
Really nice hotel, we enjoyed a very pleasant stay there a couple of years ago, & were always made to feel very welcome. Good food, and large comfy rooms. The bar it has to be said is not one of its finer points however - about a 3 for that.
18 Jul 2007 21:00
Liked this place very much, (found it on holiday in Swanage 2005) Friendly, comfortable atmosphere, and the staff were always pleasant. Excellent range of ales (Timmy Taylors/Ringwood),and ciders in particular. Hope to return there one day.
18 Jul 2007 20:50
Oh dear. What more is there to say.. An Ersatz Wetherspoons, so at least you know what you are going to get.
18 Jul 2007 17:03
The Station Hotel, South Nutfield
Me and my mate used to meet up at this boozer and it wasn't bad back then. Visited it the other day however, and now have to agree with the last poster's comments - what a hole it has become. Characterless & poor beers too. Shame really.
18 Jul 2007 01:17
A bit too yuppie like for me & a tad pretentious. However the staff are efficient, and the beer is fine - all be it a little pricey though.
18 Jul 2007 01:06
The Imperial Arms, Chislehurst
Very much a locals pub. Staff have always been pleasant enough, as have the beers & ales. Could have a wider range of real ales though. Handy if you fancy a Thai meal - given the boozer backs right on to a Thai restaurant, and is also close to the Chislehurst Caves.
18 Jul 2007 00:56
One of Bromley's better boozers. A safe pint - (do a nice pint of London Pride) If you want to avoid all those ghastly chavs on a Friday night! - take refuge at The Partridge. You could do far worse in Bromley...
18 Jul 2007 00:32
The Shortlands Tavern, Shortlands
The Shortlands Tavern is a total hole. Shame, given I live within a stones throw! Scruffy, dingey, sub standard beer, and the 'beer garden' -is basically an extension of the car park. One plus is - they do make an effort with their hanging baskets in the summer -bless.
18 Jul 2007 00:20
The Ramblers Rest, Chislehurst
Lovely little pub. One of the boroughs best. Nice range of beers & ales, - 'Bombadier' is still excellent. Pleasant place to spend a summers evening.
17 Jul 2007 21:01
The Compass, Bromley
Had not been to The Compass for quite some time so I decided to pop in the other evening. Expecting it to be packed to the rafters given it was a busy evening of football fixtures, I was pleasantly surprised to find just the opposite. I plumped for a couple of decent pints of Adnams Southwold Bitter. The Landlady and staff were very welcoming and the service friendly (which is not always the way in Bromley sometimes it has to be said) The usual selections of larger were on tap and just the two of Adnams and Guinness too (i think) as far as bitters/ales. All in all I was pleasantly surprised and would defiantly pay another visit.
