The Crown and Cushion, Blackwater
Popped in here after a meeting miles from home - so a random drive past, and needed some grub and a pint...
All excellent. 3 ales on incl those mentioned below. Fantastic burger, superb fish and chips, plentiful portions, friendly staff and a convivial busy atmosphere - even on a Tue lunchtime.
Just what the doctor ordered.

Due to re-open soon (June 2009) as a pub / grill / carvery.
Looks promising, and at least it's not being turned into a restaurant / flats / a car park / boarded up hang out for rats and other low life.

Fantastic food - tho I've yet to get past either the pie or the fish and chips in about 4 attempts - really good quality and portions.
Good beers, and nice cosy atmosphere. Little beer garden out back was a decent sun trap (on the day we had sun).
Closed on Sunday PM's annoyingly.

A bit down at heel maybe, but really a nice pub with decent basic food. Beers a bit disappointing (Arkells 2B / 3B only - but good) and lagers (Stella / Carling).
Has some obscure satellite channel for sport so if it's on, it's on here.

The Marlborough Arms, Woodstock
Now called 'The Marlborough Grill' which whilst it's sacriledge to a 14th century coaching inn, it's pretty good. The interior is superb - remaining pretty much untouched, with wood panelling and open fire in winter. Good beers on, tho I forget which now :)

Abbott Ale on draft is good. Nice, clean and bright - if a little modern. Food pretty good too.

It is, as the previous comment says, exorbitantly expensive. I don't really care for my beer on a paper doily if it's going to cost me the price of a small countries deficit.
Nice enough otherwise, but essentially just a hotel with a bar.

Aha. Good work ThomasHenry - been trying to login to update and you've done it for me in the meantime!
Yep - the Royal Blenheim was all looking good when we went in for a few the other night. Dragon Hill and Village Idiot both superb, and 8 others to get through too.
Free wireless on the way, and they will be showing sport on one or two plasma's. Kitchen will also be up and running too soon having chatted to one of the guys there.
Finally somewhere directly in Ox city centre worth going to.

Now re-opened as a Wetherspoons (the Four Candles) after Ronnie Barker's Open All Hours skit. Barker went to school nearby.
Not been in to see how good/bad it is.

Closed, refurb not started, and allegedly re-opening as an obscure restaurant.
Absolutely shocking mis-management of a perfectly good, well located (it's OX1, with a big garden, next to a YHA hostel and the train station), historic old pub. Anyone involved with it's demise should no longer work anywhere in any industry involving food, beer, or service.

Also have lots of local brewery beers from White Horse Brewery. Lovely blokes, lovely beer. Mmm.

Lovely pub. Maximum good beers. Minimum head room. Can get very busy, but lots of outside space with fantastic braziers and marshmallows available for purchase and toasting.
All in all, a pub with a huge amount of heritage, thankfully not ruined by corporate brewery world.
If you're visiting Oxford and don't pop in to at least have a quick half, you've missed out.

A Proper Pub. Good beers, and lots of them. Light comedy touches everywhere. Good food. Far enough out of town to avoid the pleb quota.
2 Oct 2008 21:35
Yeah, not bad. Food is good, if extortionately on a par with most places in Oxford. Nice burgers. Rrrrrrrrrubbish London Pride (which is all they have on draft ale front).

Good pub with fantastic musical history (before Six Continents pi$$ed on it).
Was much better however - has gone VASTLY downhill in the last few months with, from what I can tell, a change of mgmt / staff. e.g. drinking a pint behind the bar at 2 mins past closing is not really recommended in the barmans handbook.

The honey pot is a great little pub, that's fortunately not frequented by mongs.
San Miguel, Becks Vier and Kronenberg on draft.
Excellent Timothy Taylor's Landlord always on, and it has a good turnover so is a great quality pint.
Good food - fantastic 'Build your own burgers', great specials and all for a decent price too (except the beers, which are a bit pricey - poxy breweries, poxy taxes..).

This pub is CLOSED, has been for sometime, and appears that won't change. Looking for sorry for itself as it gently falls down right in the middle of Oxford... the old landlords have taken over The Wheatsheaf on The High, and pretty much used the same approach for it - i.e. loud RATM and lots of beer.

Dire. Last time I was there was for England v Russia(?) and some guy got glassed, which seemed a bit OTT. Pretty ropey, but handy location if you're desperate / can't bear O'Neills up the road and need to see a game...

The Queens Arms, South Kensington
Great pub tucked away down a side street. Cracking beers (Pride, Youngs and Staropramen as I recall - tho things got a bit hazy...) and friendly types. Food pretty good too.

The Hoop and Toy, South Kensington
This place deserves the title of Official Worst Sunday Roast in the country, nay the world. We can't believe the staff had the gall to set it down in front of us after removing 7.45 a pop. Shocking. Avoid.

The Crown Inn, Woodstock
Is now a split pub with a back room with sports/pool table - all nicely done, and a front bar with cracking food, no TV's, friendly staff and good beers. Currently Doom Bar and 2 others.
