The pub was recently extensively refurbished and re-opened at the end of May. Now well worth a visit.
29 Jun 2015 13:04
I'm glad to read that the Harp remains a great pub but am saddened that at least 2 posters found it necessary to quote swear words.
19 Jun 2015 13:24
I agree that at 'busy times' and when sun is shining, you will find many well heeled 'Chiswick types' but that is only to be expected. These people do all congregate at the back of pub by the riverside. But I can report that there are plenty of seats nearer the front of the pub. Overall, this is one of the best Thames-side pubs in London. Well worth visiting.
8 Jun 2015 12:37
I should hope the Red Lion has been refurbished from time to time but I am sure it has not "trebled" in size. Anyway, I have always found it a pleasant little pub when walking from Ealing Broadway to South Ealing.
8 Jun 2015 12:29
The pub has recently undergone a complete refurbishment and you should change the photograph. This is a great pub to have a drink in on your way to Kew Gardens. You can even have a meal there.
22 Dec 2014 11:38
Although it's been a year since I last visited this pub, I just don't believe the poster of 19 April (richw012) saying "rude staff, rude customers". Nonsense, I have always found staff reasonably polite and I don't hang around in any pub full of rude customers.
Expensive? That may be true, though a pint of beer is expensive almost anywhere these days. But this is a terrific pub.
25 Apr 2014 11:38
The Red Lion laid on a special "sausage roll" event last night. It made a nice change. I haven't eaten a sausage roll in years.

The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
The toilets are fine, so if there is a smell it must be the drains. Report it to City of Westminster or Thames Water.

The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
techno12 : sorry to hear about the price of your lager - that is rather pricey, but then you talk of Wetherspoons' price. I know Wetherspoons are unbeatable on price, but I would far rather drink in Fuller's pub any day of the week. I'm lucky (?) as I don't drink much so the price does not impact too much on me.
26 Sep 2013 19:27
Sorry curioushistory, it's a Fuller's pub (since last November).
21 Aug 2013 12:43
What value do cryptic (almost threatening) posts by the likes of Crimson Leo add to this site?
21 Aug 2013 12:38
Greenoberet, If the staff were so horrible with you I should complain to the Management (at Fuller's brewery). I understand they are quite good at investigating customer complaints.
26 Jun 2013 17:22
Booze Allen - you mean that the Express Tavern was closed. It took me a while to realise! The same thing happened to me last week, but that's OK as I love the Bell & Crown
12 Jun 2013 19:01
That is hard to believe MK Bee : 2 inches gap in top of your glass then only filled up another inch ? Do you know how enormous that is?? If true, the Red Lion can go in the Guinness Book of Records as the stingiest measure in the UK.
12 Jun 2013 18:55
Went yesterday with two old friends and we agreed that this is "possibly the best pub in the world". Of course that is very subjective but we felt that by a narrow margin this pub is better than another nice pub across the heath in Highgate.
Good service, good food and a wide choice of ales including 2 guest beers. The old nooks and crannies are marvellously preserved.
12 Mar 2013 16:56
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
this is a brilliant pub in the heart of Birmingham. Huge choice of ales: Fullers, gales and guest ales. The pies are magnificent too. A slight drawback is the price but you do get quality service here and the Government's beer duty escalator is largely to blame for price increases.
8 Mar 2013 19:09
Useless pub because it is constantly crowded and getting to the toilets is an accident waiting to happen (up a narrow spiral staircase). I blame Network rail who are trying to squeeze a profit out of the smallest building...
14 Feb 2013 13:39
A magic little pub, yet they have enough room for pictures of the famous Ealing Studios which are just across the very wide road. Oh and they have some good ales!
8 Feb 2013 19:05
What has happened to the Coach (in Greek Street)? It looks as though it has been taken over by squatters with bizarre slogans hung outside such as "London's first vegetarian pub", "this is an independent pub". It is getting very messy looking. Still, they must be doing something right - the place was packed last night.
13 Dec 2012 11:40
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
I disagree with baxterfish. Fuller's ales are certainly not cheap as in Wetherspoon but nor are they 'expensive'. Fuller's do try to provide a good quality environment in their pubs and the Basketmaker's is a very good example. When me and my mates are in Brighton, we are happy to literally walk up to a mile to get there.
13 Dec 2012 11:35
For me this is one of the best pubs in Lewes - very old and quirky. Small bars. They serve excellent Fuller's, Gales', Harvey's and guest ales!
12 Dec 2012 16:52
The Albert Arms, Elephant and Castle
Hatter - you are too kind. Anyone (even visitors from anywhere in the world) should know that you simply DO NOT go into a pub or cafe with a drink purchased elsewhere. The Albert is fine and does not need rude customers who are quick to affix a political label on people.
12 Dec 2012 16:47
I am puzzled by 1honeydew's comment - can't imagine why the landlord could upset him EVEN if he did assume the person only drank London Pride. The only trouble with the nearby Craft is the crowds; they are worse than in the Old Mitre!
27 Nov 2012 17:41
The Crystal Palace Tavern, Bath
it will be interesting to watch developments here as the pub has been purchased by Fuller's.
27 Nov 2012 17:31
Things can only get better now that this pub has been taken over by Fuller's
27 Nov 2012 17:26
I'm sorry to read the recent mixed reviews as I have not been here for a couple of years. It certainly used to be a great pub.
21 Nov 2012 14:29
thanks for reporting back renzarov! I haven't been to the B&C for a while but I was always most impressed by it. I was mystified by those bizarre comments about the pub dog and so on.
26 Sep 2012 16:14
djw
As you say, this is London and Cittie of Yorke is one of its well known pubs. Consequently 4 or more is (I'm afraid!!) is just about the norm for one pint...
6 Sep 2012 17:26
Dear BIT:
I am sorry to say that you still have the wrong position on map for the Coach & Horses in Greek Street and I think posters are still confusing the several "COACH & HORSES" that are located in W1 postal district.
I am sorry to keep on about this but I do love the Coach that is in Greek Street, so I would like to see the confusion sorted...
5 Sep 2012 10:14
Even Belgravia needs "paint covered workmen" - that's why we had PUBLIC bars. This pub definitely has 2 areas, though it might not have a public bar as such - can't remember. What I can say is that this is a typical Belgravia pub : very comfortable, but not snobbish in any way.
21 Aug 2012 12:35
It is always enjoyable to come back to this pub which has a great location facing more or less due South with views of Hyde Park. Ideal place for lunch and one or two ales.
30 Jul 2012 13:09
I am guilty as charged! At my age I confess to finding the spiral staircase a nuisance as I might have to go 3 times after 2 pints. May I raise the white flag and wish good luck to both pubs?
30 Jul 2012 12:42
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Dear DAKING sorry if I sounded as if I was trying to teach you to suck eggs
16 Jul 2012 17:23
Dear tapflaps, this pub has been run by "Scottie" for many years and he's an OK guy. He stars in Youtube videos about real ale. Your loss...
8 Jun 2012 14:37
I have it on good authority that the William is now closed and has been coverted to a Vietnamese restaurant called 'Pho Can Tho'.
8 Jun 2012 14:32
A great little pub with a great choice of ales. A must when in Shoreditch.
7 Jun 2012 17:36
I was pleased to discover this friendly back street local last week with my friends. There is a very good selection of Fuller's and Gales ales. I am looking forward to visiting again.
28 May 2012 13:33
Excellent pub for a railway station : not too crowded as it's on the edge of the bus station so you have to know it's there. Wide choice of Fuller's ales and guest ales. I think you will found that there are far more than 2 Fuller's pubs that also serve one or more guest ales.
25 May 2012 19:17
This pub is very gimmicky, much too small especially when you see all the beers they are seeking to serve. Also some of the foreign ales are ridiculously overpriced. You would be better off at the DORIC ARCH which is actually part of the station outbuildings.
25 May 2012 19:06
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Dear DAKING - real ale should be "flat" because if it is 'real' it will not contain any of the terrible artificial products which cause some beers to have a 'superb' frothy head. The head you get with real ale comes mostly from the movement of beer through the pipes and into your glass. Thereafter most real ale will indeed appear flat.
17 May 2012 18:16
I was pleasantly surprised by how pleasant this pub can be when it's not too crowded (like after 4pm on a weekday!). Enjoyed 2 lovely pints of Seafarer's Ale at about 3.60 a pint.
17 May 2012 18:10
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
re. the price of beer: 4 is a standard price in Hampstead, so 4.15 in Covent Garden sounds about right.
And I am sure the Fullers Chiswick Ale would be well under 4 in the Lamb & Flag?
15 May 2012 13:27
sorry blahkp, but at 23.15 you should not be drinking and the pub could have their licence at risk!
15 May 2012 13:21
From what BobOs said about the tables he/she is talking about a different Coach & Horses, not the one on Greek Street. It does not help that the map SHOWS A DIFFERENT LOCATION...
2 May 2012 13:51
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
I am so looking forward to my forthcoming trip to this pub. It is a rare treat as I do not live in Brighton, but this pub is ALWAYS on my shortlist (of 3) when I am in town. I have never been disappointed.
30 Apr 2012 19:49
I did not find the music too much of a pain, but you have been warned! Very pleasant bar even if beer is pricey. I thought this was a fairly smart place so I might well come again but it's not on my normal itinerary.
17 Apr 2012 19:49
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
This pub is handily located between the North Lanes and the railway station. They regularly provide good food, Fuller's ales, one or two guests and quite a range of malt whiskeys. Definitely my favourite when I'm in Brighton.
10 Apr 2012 13:28
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
How (small c) conservative can you get? Fullers have totally respected the age of the pub in keeping the bar(s) unchanged except for fresh paint and wallpaper. Is there any need for rude language regarding colour of wallpaper? The only drastic change is the toilet which is very modern, but I don't think any customers will mourn the earlier incarnation?
In my opinion, this is still a fantastic pub though it still gets crowded at times.
10 Apr 2012 13:18
The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington
It's not that pricey - this is just off Kensington High Street you know.
16 Mar 2012 17:00
I have to agree with guv2. It is difficult for the pubs in this area to keep trading because the majority of locals are Indian and it seems that they prefer to drink at home (when they are not teetotallers). Fuller's have actually closed several pubs in the area due to lack of customers. I think the landlord (or manager?) is actually doing very well to keep this pub open.
16 Mar 2012 16:56
I concur with most people here who can remember when this was a great classic 'Young's' pub. Why oh why have the brewery wrecked it? There is still one decent Youngs pub in inner London and that is the Lamb in WC1.
27 Feb 2012 15:09
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
great pub in the centre of Birmingham where you can sample most of Fuller's great range of real ales. The interior decor is fantastic as a lot of the luxurious 19th century banking decor survives.
27 Feb 2012 14:57
I have said before (about the Anglers in Teddington) that it's 'horses for courses'. In other words, where there are many children, best to avoid if you want peace and quiet. Conversely, if you have children of your own, do bring them to such pubs. That way, everyone is happy. At least that's the theory.
27 Feb 2012 14:45
Good pub, often crowded. Always pop in here when passing through Waterloo station.
30 Jan 2012 13:06
Thanks for the heads up huntforbeer. I'll give it a wide berth if it's full of undisciplined children.
23 Jan 2012 14:07
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
Dear Browntrout, I have to say your 'horror' is a little overdone. The Lamb & Flag was for many years tied to Courage (a brewery which in the seventies was not noted for being good with old pubs or real ale. Yet Courage's management did not do the pub any harm and Fuller's track record all over London and the south east speaks for itself. Fuller's will keep all that is worth keeping. I'm sure the dear old pub can do with a bit of redecoration.
As for tourists, I think they are already the majority of the clientele and love them or hate them, they do bring money into the country.
And no, I don't work for Fuller's. I just love their ales and I enjoy visiting their new pubs and re-visiting old haunts.
12 Dec 2011 13:10
nice pub - there is always a great ambiance in here and the ales are very good.
29 Nov 2011 14:28
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
Yes do write to Fuller's if you have a complaint - I know from another website that they take complaints seriously. On the question of guest beers, Fullers do have guest beers in a number of their pubs, but ask yourself a question before whingeing that they exclude guest beers:
If you won the Euro millions and purchased a pub free of tie, if a member of your family happened to own a brewery, wouldn't you be inclined to FAVOUR your relative's brewery??
25 Nov 2011 20:21
The Lamb and Flag, Covent Garden
This pub does get packed, it's true but that's the price to be paid for having a historic tavern in central London. Nonetheless this is a great place to enjoy the beers of London's only brewery (Fuller's) and guest beers. I do not know of the iron rule mentioned by guayabera.
8 Nov 2011 12:55
The Euston Tap is in a beautiful small building that was NOT designed to be a pub. They may have a good choice of beers, not all of them expensive, but there is no atmosphere in the place. I much prefer the Doric Arch which is nearby : also in the station.
4 Nov 2011 10:33
MESSAGE TO BITE:
You have the wrong location on your map. Maybe all the "Coach & Horses in London W1 are "wrong". Please note!
14 Oct 2011 18:30
Five of us came here for a late lunch - about 1.30 pm : the food was terrific, perhaps slightly expensive but maybe that's because Hamble is so touristy. My nephew and I had a very enjoyable pint of London Pride. Would definitely come again.
I noticed from the menu that there is a wide chice of breakfast and they offer cream teas!
3 Oct 2011 18:46
The Coach & Horses at 29 Greek Street is now a Fullers pub. It has retained the traditional fixtures left by the former landlord, Norman Balon. Has one or two guest ales and snack food is available.
30 Sep 2011 11:55
Please, please sort out these 'Coach & Horses' pubs - they are in the wrong locations
28 Sep 2011 14:02
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
A great back street pub that thinks it's a gastropub. Don't be put off, they do perfectly respectable pub food at reasonable prices, the beers are wicked and there is a good atmosphere.
22 Sep 2011 20:20
The BITE map provided above shows a pub at a different address, ie NOT in Greek Street. BITE, can you please sort this out? The post code may be right for the location on map!
12 Aug 2011 11:30
graham2, it must have been a very big glass of wine or a very posh wine, because I don't think you could pay much more than 3.90/4.00 for a strong pint - which means you paid over 6 for a glass of wine?
Having said that, this is the Prime Minister's local!
12 Aug 2011 11:17
Isn't that enough bogs? Just go somewhere else if it is so horrid!
1 Aug 2011 16:58
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Monkdawallydahonk,
You are right about the food - it is superb. This has to be the best back street local in Brighton.
28 Jul 2011 17:26
I cannot understand the adverse comments about this pub. It is a nice old building on a fabulous part of the Thames (Strand-on-the-Green) and the landlords have always done a good job. There is a good range of real ales - mostly Fuller's. Food is varied and reasonable.
6 Jul 2011 11:58
Managed to find a seat recently at 7 in the evening! Scotty was very helpful in advising on the strengths of some of the various beers.
A gem of a pub!
5 Jul 2011 12:30
I was not at all impressed by the 'Manager' (if that is what he was) on my last visit with 3 friends at about 2.20 pm. It was fairly quiet and I never mind having to wait my turn to be served. But it was very disconcerting to see said Manager on the phone for a good 5 minutes. During this time, there was no sign from him that he would be with us shortly. I suspected the conversation was 'personal' rather than 'business'. When he put the phone down, rather than come over to us, he simply shouted up the staircase for one of his staff to come and serve us.
So much for the Fullers "4 pillars" policy which includes exemplary service!
Other than that, this is a great pub!
5 Jul 2011 12:14
I think some of the reviewers are thinking of a different Coach & Horses - fair enough, there are several in London W1 alone!
This is the pub that was immortalised by the weekly column written by its famous customer, Jeffrey Bernard. Apparently the staff of 'Private Eye' magazine still come here for lunch - in the private room upstairs.
15 Jun 2011 18:42
Charlie Chaplin, Elephant and Castle
This is a dodgy pub. Perhaps the fact that the whole area is being redeveloped has a lot to do with it. I have said before (under other Elephant & Castle area pubs) that there are too many pubs in this area and some should close: this is one of them. That would give the decent pubs (there are some!) a cjhance to survive.
Don't come here unless you like the Wild West saloon ambiance.
15 Jun 2011 18:21
Things will be looking up soon. This pub will be closing shortly for a deep refurbishment and will re-open as a Fullers pub.
10 Jun 2011 18:27
Yes Von Schlieffen. That does not stop me from enjoying Harvey's at the excellent Royal Oak in SE1 !
4 Apr 2011 14:27
The Hereford Arms, South Kensington
I have never been to the Stanhope, but I'm glad if some people have gone elsewhere as I don't like crowded pubs!
15 Mar 2011 12:52
I can only agree with all the favourable reviews : nice area, nice beer and nice decor, etc...
22 Feb 2011 13:51
As this pub gets so crowded, I don't think it madders all that much if the foodservice is strange (or whatever). Expertopinion's aside re. onion was very funny though.
21 Feb 2011 10:39
Kevmac, don't worry; I just said that thing about toffs to wind my friends up in response to someone else's comment. I can assure you we are not stuck-up!
14 Feb 2011 13:07
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Blastbeat, you are welcome to the Briar Rose - I will stick to the very popular Old Joint Stock and the Wellington which is just round the back of OJS.
9 Feb 2011 17:50
The photo is out of date (very old Benskins sign!). Can you please upload a photo with the new Fullers signage?
9 Feb 2011 17:43
I totally agree with Gann that service could be a little bit better - are you listening, O Fullers regional manager?
9 Feb 2011 17:37
The Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark
Great pub this - if you go early you might even catch a glimpse of Niraj who is boycotting Wetherspoons
9 Feb 2011 17:31
The Barrowboy and Banker, London Bridge
Good Fullers pub which caters quite well for the passing trade - this is not a "local's" pub. Step outside and you will get a great view of the Shard (London's tallest building?) which is going up ever so quickly.
9 Feb 2011 17:19
I'm glad to read that this is a bar for the local toffs - so Parky, Big Al, Danny and me will fit in well! Certainly, Dark Star is a great brew.
9 Feb 2011 16:15
The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington
If you have seen recent London Pride adverts on TV, featuring James May, you might like to know that the pub shown in all the daytime shots is the ... Scarsdale!
For some reason, a Pub in Battersea was used for night time filming.
31 Jan 2011 14:10
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Blastbeat - wine glass sizes do vary and a 'large' glass might be the equivalent of 2 ordinary glasses elsewhere. Also, this is the centre of Birmingham, you know!
31 Jan 2011 14:00
Sorry, can't agree with you alebarry. They serve excellent ales in here - the usual Fullers ales and Butcombe!
13 Jan 2011 18:15
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Excellent pub when I last visited, but have they fixed the external frontage yet?
13 Jan 2011 18:12
Whilst I'm sure the food is very good, for me the pub is just the place for a good choice of ales either before or after a good walk on the nearby Hampstead Heath and the Highgate village. One of London's best kept secrets.
30 Nov 2010 14:18
Apart rom the regular presence of shady Medicines inspectors, this is a very nice pub.
22 Nov 2010 11:19
If the owner is as rude as you say, the pub will not survive for very long. Plenty of competition these days!
4 Oct 2010 17:50
Service has perked up a bit here of late, even though it gets pretty crowded at lunch time. I thoroughly recommend a visit if you are in the area.
29 Sep 2010 17:24
Great riverside boozer which is not always too crowded as you really have to know where it is.
Food is OK, but main attraction here is a wide range of Fullers and Gale's ales.
14 Sep 2010 13:09
The Old Bank of England, Fleet Street
Superb building, well worth the visit. And the beer and food are more than satisfactory.
13 Sep 2010 19:01
The Crown and Sugarloaf, Bride's Lane
Excuse me, but this pub is NOT on Fleet Street at all. If you look at the photo, the premises on the LEFT are clearly shown as 30 Bride Lane. These latter premises are close to the corner of Fleet Street.
But of course as John Bonser says this pub used to be part of the Punch Tavern and the Punch Tavern is on Fleet Street. The splitting up of these 2 pubs is the finest example I know of vandalism and greed by whoever. This is a case of 1+1 = 2 lousy pubs
13 Sep 2010 18:54
Shame it will no longer be a pub because this is a building of character.
13 Sep 2010 18:41
If you like your London Pride, you'll get a good pint in here and some pretty decent food. The locals are friendly too.
8 Sep 2010 18:51
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
Have only just read post by Martinsh about a "greeter". Whilst I can see this would be disconcerting, I am personally pleased to hear they have a greeter because that must mean the pub gets very busy. I have only been able to visit at weekends so far and it was fairly quiet (Saturday afternoon).
1 Sep 2010 15:57
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Dear Bigglesworth, that is a bit technical: "they did not 'flush' a barrel! Presumably this is a brewing heresy ... which loads of pubs indulge in!
1 Sep 2010 15:47
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Absolutely terrific very friendly back street local. Good home made pub food and excellent Fullers and Gales ales and a couple of guests. Probably the best pub in Brighton.
31 Aug 2010 11:55
As Martinsh pointed out, this pub is in the BITE Top 40. That says it all!
27 Aug 2010 10:42
If you ask me DH Parky, roughly 2 out of 5 of the Elephant &Castle area pubs should close because they no longer have enough customers to be VIABLE : Start by closing the William !
26 Aug 2010 14:34
This pub is one of Fullers biggest (the biggest is probably on Fleet Street). Great atmosphere, especially on Friday nights! Sadly Emily Maitlis is not a regular fixture - she once hosted a series of interviews for Newsnight in the pub!
24 Aug 2010 12:19
I agree that this is a splendid pub and although there isn't much room it's usually possible to stand in comfort - this does not worry me and I'm not a young man! Definitely worth a visit if you are in the area.
17 Aug 2010 16:37
The Punch Tavern, Fleet Street
I totally agree with DeptfordDutch : this WAS once a great pub. Now it is only fit for tourists who have lost their way. Don't waste your time coming here.
I cannot forgive the owners who partitioned and sold off about half of the former pub. The bit that's left is a shambles. Disgraceful.
16 Aug 2010 14:13
Why the shouting in the previous review (all in caps)? But above all why such irrelevant material? Can we please stick to serious views about the building, the drink, the people, the pork pies...just say on subject, please.
Many thanks.
9 Aug 2010 12:14
Dear Foghorn, sorry to hear about your experience with the staff. I like your figures of speech to describe them! I hope the Regional Manager will look into this.
Still, the nooks and crannies and seats outside are great if pub is not overcrowded!
9 Aug 2010 12:01
The Rockingham Arms, Elephant and Castle
Error, this is a DH Wetherspoon - frequented at lunch time by many workers from the nearby DH Headquarters building. Also packed with students. Like all Wetherspoons establishments you occasionally get a gem of an unusual ale at low prices but you can also get rubbishy beer.
They do good food too but the customers, be careful. Don't sit on the left hand side as you go in.
6 Aug 2010 12:13
The Elephant and Castle, Elephant and Castle
E&C has been re-decorated recently so it's quite nice and they do nice Thai food for lunch - express menu for 4.50 plus other choices.
What I like most is that this pub does not get as crowded as the nearby Wetherspoons.
6 Aug 2010 12:05
The Mad Hatter Hotel, Southwark
I spent a great afternoon in this typical Ale & Pie House. IT's everything a pub should be.
6 Jul 2010 19:13
The Lye Torng Thai Bar, Southwark
I think the lack of comment since February 2007 paints a story: STEER CLEAR OF THIS PLACE!
6 Jul 2010 19:10
Has recently re-opened. They do Vietnamese food and the landlady is a trained paramedic; this could come in handy if you have too many drinks.
6 Jul 2010 13:20
The Albert Arms, Elephant and Castle
This is one of the better pubs of the Elephant & Castle area so it deserves your custom. I would add that roughly 2 out of 5 of the E&C area pubs should close because they no longer have enough customers to be VIABLE : Start by closing the William and the Uxbridge!
5 Jul 2010 18:54
Strongers,
You should have gone along with DH Parky. Fancy going all on your own, you could have ended up in a concrete coffin!
5 Jul 2010 16:19
This has to be one of the best pubs in Hampstead - located in a quiet area that retains the genuine atmosphere of one of London's lost villages.
2 Jul 2010 20:02
This is a great pub that just goes on getting better. Keep it up Landlord!
2 Jul 2010 19:54
Smashing pub: nice decor and Fullers ales, what more could you want?
2 Jul 2010 19:50
What do you mean the ale choice has suffered? This has never been a free house, so if they are supplying a number of Fullers ales plus Harveys and Butcombe, I would say you are getting more choice than in the average tied pub.
1 Jul 2010 19:36
Pleasant enough pub. I never even noticed the cat, though I don't care for them!
21 Jun 2010 15:53
In my humble opinion, MPs do not come here that often as they now have their own premises next to Westminster tube station in addition to the facilities in the House of Commons. But this is the local for Number 10 Downing Street!
The pub has just recently been re-decorated and looks very smart.
14 Jun 2010 16:56
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Always a great pub, but I did wonder yesterday what on earth has happened to the end of the external wall. It seems to have been bashed with a hammer and chisel by a nocturnal vandal. Either that or a pocket of damp has seeped through. Very surprising as the outside was redecorated in the last few months.
14 Jun 2010 16:53
Excellent pub that is well maintained by Nicholson's Inns. Possibly the longest bar in England (?) good beer, sausages and mash - what more could you want?
Just beware of the PCS union reps!
20 May 2010 10:15
Monkdawallydahonk referred to 4 for a pint of lager. Whilst I cannot vouch for the exact price, I know from talking to the landlord that they have a policy to charge more for lager as this is not a "lager" pub. People mostly come to drink the excellent Harvey's ales and a changing guest ale from Fullers/Gales.
The pub is a jewel in North Southwark (the Borough) and too bad for lager drinkers!
19 May 2010 16:35
I am very pleased with the refurbishment. The red and gold lettering of the pub name has been replaced with the fullers style lettering but in a nice touch, the pub's sign features a painting of the pub with the former red and gold lettering!
19 May 2010 16:27
I'm glad to hear that the Flask has reopened and look forward to getting up there - I live in South West London.
19 May 2010 16:21
John and others - if you want to see a Fullers refurbishment of a pub they have recently taken over, have a look at The Roundhouse in Covent Garden. I'll let you be the judge!
14 May 2010 11:42
I must congratulate the previous reviewer (TWG) : he/she has given a very good account of the 'louche' interior. At first sight, this pub may not appear to be up to much but, like all good pubs it slowly reveals its hidden charms. This is certainly one of the top 3 pubs in Brighton.
13 May 2010 18:12
I do not work for Fullers, but I am a shareholder who has visited most of their pubs (and the brewery!) and I know a lot of 'useless' information about Fullers. I stand by my comments on the refurbishment of the Flask - just wait and see!
5 May 2010 13:22
Dear foghorn,
You have nothing to fear. The Flask is now a Fullers pub and they have an excellent track record in terms of retaining ALL original/historic/pretty (etc - you name it) features whenever they refurbish one of their pubs. I wish you good drinking!
9 Apr 2010 11:57
Thanks for the news that the refurbishment is now complete. I visited a few weeks back when the pub was surrounded by scaffolding and it was raining steadily. I look forward to visiting again!
9 Apr 2010 11:40
In 1971, this may have been the best pub in Hounslow town centre (as opposed to London Borough!) along with the now vanished Red Lion in the High Street, but most of the locals in town have definitely seen better days. It is very sad. There are far better pubs in Heston, Brentford, Isleworth, Chiswick - all part of LB Hounslow!
12 Mar 2010 12:51
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
A classic Brighton pub which I always visit when I'm in town. 8/10 for me.
4 Mar 2010 09:33
Whenever I'm in Brighton, I love to visit this pub : it's clean congenial and serves a fabulous selection of ales.
4 Feb 2010 19:47
This is a great boozer but people must accept that it has a long history of hosting a rock and roll/punk clientele. If you prefer somewhere more 'staid' (for want of a better word) please try another pub in Soho. That's the beauty of pubs, they are all DIFFERENT!
4 Feb 2010 19:43
This has all the potential to be a great pub, but it is hampered by the long standing vacant building site next to (and behind) it!
25 Jan 2010 14:02
The Robert Inn (Master Robert Hotel), Hounslow
This was a great pub when Fullers used to run the Robert Inn and the next door motel as one unit. By the sound of it, the "pub" side is either being starved of investment/management time or worse has been hived off. Either way, it does not sound like the best place for a pint of Pride.
25 Jan 2010 13:46
The Castle, Harrow On The Hill
err, tonyblack,
...I don't think this pub serves Young's!
25 Jan 2010 13:05
The Hereford Arms, South Kensington
This is a good pub for the area, which is swarming with either rich people or tourists. At least, here you will get a nice drop of Fullers ales and a reasonable selection of food. The prices are OK too, given the afore-mentioned presence of rich people.
22 Jan 2010 15:53
Yes, this is a truly wonderful pub. And thank goodness that Fullers, who own the pub, allow a large variety of guest beers to be served!
22 Jan 2010 15:47
The Old Joint Stock, Birmingham
I just love this pub. I recently had a huge pie with chips (have not eaten any pies for years, so found this very enjoyable!) washed down with a pint of Fuller's ale. Terrific pub in my view, but I do concede that the spaciousness might not be to everyone's taste.
10 Nov 2009 13:16
Maybe the Manager has been advised to watch people with a drink problem.
29 Oct 2009 12:34
The Sir John Oldcastle, Farringdon
This is a fine pub. I don't understand all the critical posts. Some people need to remember this is a WETHERSPOONS - the easyjet of pubs where the beer is very cheap - geddit? If you want a more refined pub you have to go somewhere else and maybe pay a bit more for your pint.
29 Oct 2009 12:02
The Still and West, Portsmouth
This is a great part of Old Portsmouth and Still and West has unsurpassable views over the port entrance. I strongly recommend you have a pint in here.
16 Oct 2009 18:39
I have not been to this pub for ages, but am getting tired of reading about lots of children running around. Surely it's "horses for courses". If you like quiet adult pubs, this is obviously not the place for you. On the other hand this is the perfect place for families especially during the summer months.
23 Sep 2009 15:42
this is the jewel in Leeds' crown - in pub terms anyway. As a southerner I just love the narrow lanes off the busy street like the one this pub is on.
8 Sep 2009 18:39
I concur with the good reviews - excellent choice of ales. One of my team kept muttering that this was a "dive" but he is a wind-up merchant!
30 Jul 2009 22:24
The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington
I'm sorry to hear about your experience with the staff, jhlw
All you can do is vote with your feet - try the Warwick Arms?
24 Jul 2009 17:56
I like to come here for a good quality pint and the nostalgia of all the "great and the good" of rock and pop who have frequented this pub over the years.
17 Jul 2009 20:08
I suppose some tourists are unaware that USUALLY in Britain you go to the bar to order drinks and food. But Rex's comments seem to imply that quite a few pubs do table service. Anyway, I quite like the Roundhouse.
17 Jul 2009 20:05
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
really enjoyed myself: had a vegetarian burger with chips and 2 pints of Gales' Seafarers Ale. Smashing pub in a nice part of Brighton.
28 May 2009 18:37
I don't agree with the view that this pub is expensive, given that it is the local for 10 Downing Street! Only Wetherspoons will be cheaper in the area and...no I will not criticise Wetherspoon and their 99p pint!
13 May 2009 19:32
An outstanding pub and it is great that they have unusual guest ales in addition to Fullers.
13 May 2009 19:16
I recognise the food service could be better, but you always get a good pint of Chiswick ale here.
8 May 2009 19:37
I think you will find that Fullers will have the sense to allow a couple of guest beers - I do think however it is unlikely they would be happy for the pub to continue totally as a free house. Some compromise may be necessary!
8 May 2009 19:35
The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington
This pub must have one of the most delightful locations in London. It is just like something out of Mary Poppins: Victorian houses and a lovely private garden on the square. Well worth a visit.
8 May 2009 19:31
The Hereford Arms, South Kensington
Slickwilly says they can't tell a Canadian from an American. Actually that is very tricky sometimes! For all its faults, the Hereford is a nice traditional, if expensive, pub for this part of town. The area is quite touristy but as a Londoner I am happy to visit.
27 Apr 2009 18:38
The Hereford Arms, South Kensington
Natasha paints a very unflattering picture of the staff. Surely they cannot be that bad?
7 Apr 2009 19:50
Great pub. I keep hoping to catch a glimpse of my hero - Kenneth Clarke!
27 Mar 2009 18:35
Milsonman, it is not a foregone conclusion that the Deuchars will go. It appears that Fullers are allowing guest beers in more of their pubs than used to be the case. So they may keep an evolving choice of maybe 1 guest beer.
Let's email the brewery about this!
27 Mar 2009 18:31
The Scarsdale Tavern, Kensington
Archie 50
I have very little sympathy. It used to be enough for a landlord/lady to bellow "time gentlemen please" and within 10 minutes or so the premises would be deserted. When people have had a few drinks (nothing wrong with that of course) it could take a couple of hours to close if one were to be extremely polite and civilised about it. In an expensive restaurant, this is what happens - the more you have spent, the more the staff will patiently wait for you to leave.
27 Mar 2009 18:23
I happened to hear from the landlord last week that Fullers HOCK should be available as a guest beer from about 19 March for a limited period! Some of you might like to know this as HOCK is not frequently available.
16 Mar 2009 18:54
Whitelocks is a gem of pub as many have already posted. Long may it be preserved as an "oasis" in the heart of Leeds!
12 Mar 2009 11:59
A great pub which should come into its own as spring approaches...
2 Mar 2009 17:57
I always love to come here. This is one of the best pubs in Soho, along with the Dog and Duck. Does get crowded sometimes (like when security say "no groups over 3"!!?) but hey you can't have everything.
24 Feb 2009 19:06
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
I love this pub. Can't wait till the next conference when I get to go down to Brighton...
24 Feb 2009 19:00
Yes, I remember the Red Cow (this was when Fullers also ran the nearby Clarendon and the Nashville at West Kensington) - all 3 were "pub rock" venues!
I always enjoy the beers and the Thai food so this pub suits me fine!
20 Feb 2009 12:58
I understand Fullers completed their purchase of this pub on 3 February
19 Feb 2009 19:45
I am looking forward to this pub becoming a Fullers house.
Little known useless information: the Kinks publicist, Marion Rainsford used to live just round the corner from this pub.
4 Feb 2009 19:21
Dear Gann (27 January)
Are you sure you visited this pub? Because by no stretch of the imagination is it located 300 metres from Paddington. The Victoria looks like this pub. And there is probably another RED LION in Paddington!
4 Feb 2009 19:15
The Pilot Inn, North Greenwich
I love this pub but don't often get the chance to visit. It's amazing that there are pubs like this so close to a venue of the size of the O2.
5 Jan 2009 17:45
I have found this a very pleasant well-maintained pub. I would definitely return.
5 Jan 2009 17:41
This pub was recently taken over by Fullers and they have done their usual sympathetic refurbishment. It is a nice country pub with fina ales and great catering.
5 Jan 2009 17:30
Dear Beerintheevening,
Please note that this pub is in Middlesex, not Middlsx. If you must abbreviate it's Middx.
Ta.
26 Nov 2008 19:28
The Still and West, Portsmouth
I don't see how some folks reckon beer quality has gone down here. If you like Fuller's ales you will get a good choice here and I believe the management look after the cellar and the pipes. Also there is usually a Gales beer as well. Very nice pub with a great view of entrance to harbour.
25 Nov 2008 19:40
Good news about the re-opening. I hope this fine pub is soon back on form as it was 2 or 3 years ago.
27 Oct 2008 20:25
Talking of the 60s, the White Bear was really famous back then. Dave Cousins of the Strawbs used to live across the road in Tennyson Road and made this his HQ. David Bowie and many other stars used to come.
10 Oct 2008 21:00
A rather nice pub, though I must admit I would avoid it if the football was on!
I don't know whether they still have live music in the evening but I saw the Strawbs (acoustic version) in here about 4 years ago!
10 Oct 2008 20:56
The Robert Inn (Master Robert Hotel), Hounslow
This is not at all a soulless pub. On the contrary, it is very friendly and they do good food. It is a pity they no longer serve Fullers ales.
10 Oct 2008 20:52
I totally agree with comments to the effect that this pub is an oasis in Soho. Prices are very reasonable for the West End and the toilets are perfectly bearable for a Jimmy (Riddle).
Re. the comment about a Bob Dylan CD, this pub was in the 60s through to 80s frequented by just about every pop and rock star as it was the nearest local to the MARQUEE Club! Definitely a 'rock history' pub.
4 Sep 2008 13:36
A welcome 'oasis' just off the bustle of Borough High Street, this pub never disappoints with a fine range of HARVEY's ales - I love the Sussex pale.
Thankfully, this is not a gastropub but good wholesome food is available at very reasonable prices. This is my number one pub in Central London.
26 Aug 2008 11:39
Very pleasant pub. Could do with a wider choice of ales but the Fullers London Pride was great.
8 Jul 2008 17:03
The Pilot Inn, North Greenwich
I agree the food could be better for the prices being charged but it is handy for the O2 and the choice of Fullers ales is hard to fault
20 Jun 2008 18:50
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
Fabulous pub, one of the best in Brighton along with the legendary Evening Star. Not too many conference delegates in here. Fullers ales are pretty good and they do Gales Butser and a guest ale.
Decor inside is pleasant traditional but the outside could now do with a coat of paint!
29 May 2008 21:04
Been coming here for years, me and my mates and we are never disappointed. The Harvey's ales are superb and not often found in London. The food is robust traditional British - plenty to eat!
30 Jan 2008 14:42
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
This pub is magic. You can tell straight away when you enter: friendly, clean with fullers and gales ales - and food. What more can you ask for?
30 Jan 2008 14:38
You are always guaranteed to enjoy different ales from the Harveys (of Lewes) stable in this pub. Staff are great and the double decker sandwiches have to be seen to be believed. A treasure of a pub.
8 Oct 2007 18:32
The Still and West, Portsmouth
A superb pub, serving Gales and Fullers ales. Has just been refurbished (again) and the photograph is now out of date. A poster said you will be impressed when the Isle of Wight ferry sails past. You will be even more impressed by the cross channel ferries which sail several times a year! Definitely worth a visit if you go through Old Portsmouth.
8 Jun 2007 14:03
The Basketmakers Arms, Brighton
This is a delightful (albeit small pub). I disagree with the view previously expressed that Fullers will not maintain this pub as well as Gales did. In my view Fullers look after their estate and I am sure they regard this pub as one of their "jewels".
4 Jun 2007 19:12
I went to this pub for lunch today and was not disappointed. Enjoyed beautiful chips (not the frozen so called french fries) with bacon sausage and egg, washed down with 2 pints of Sussex Best ale!
24 May 2007 18:03
This is my FAVOURITE London pub. What is there not to like? A varied selection of locals and people who travel from a few miles away. Good beer and good plain old-fashioned(in the nicest way) food. The architecture is great and the staff are all helpful. Great landlord too!
16 Apr 2007 14:29
As others have said, it's not a bad pub at all given the area it's in. The beer is good and it has a friendly atmosphere
15 Mar 2007 18:20
Excellent ales. And they have now improved the time it takes for a food order to be delivered: used to wait 35 minutes for sandwiches and the pub was not particularly crowded!
15 Mar 2007 13:48
The Albert Arms, Elephant and Castle
Quite a nice neighbourhood pub - ie the locals will notice you but in a friendly manner! Food average but beers are well kept. Good place to spend a lunchtime or an evening.
13 Mar 2007 18:37
St Stephens Tavern, Westminster
Not a bad pub at all when you think it is so close to the Mother of all parliaments and it is visited by so many tourists. I miss the old pub on this site which was SO old fashioned!
9 Mar 2007 15:47
I can only agree that this is a very pleasant pub which benefits from a HUGE garden which is brilliant in the warmer months.
The staff are very efficient at serving good ales (Shepherd Neame) and lunches at reasonable prices. Well worth a visit.
2 Mar 2007 18:51
Cracking pub with a homely atmosphere. Food is good, especially the chicken curry
27 Feb 2007 10:52
This is a magnificent pub right in the city centre. Like several Leeds pubs, it is hidden away in an alley but this only adds to its charm! The traditional pub is a long ground floor affair and they are re-launching an upstairs eating part in March 2007. Do visit, if you are in Leeds.
23 Feb 2007 14:31
The Coach and Horses, Soho
Ghastly place which is in need of new management. I suspect the brewers cannot get rid of the long standing tenant.
15 Sep 2016 11:34
