The Cotham Porter Stores, Cotham

An excellent pub/cider house- always friendly staff and customers, an excellent array of draft and bottled ciders and the beer is pretty good too (and all reasonably priced). Well worth a visit!

The Scotchman and His Pack, Bristol

Almost always really quiet and I can't see why? Very friendly staff and landlord, reasonable beer, good pool table and a balcony for the summer. It doesn't have Sky Sports at the moment (presumably because it is quiet), but anything on terrestrial is shown on the widescreen and they have a few others dotted about the pub. The only downside is that it is at the bottom of a massive hill, otherwise brilliant and constantly underrated.

Baroque, Bristol

This has now changed to 'Illusions', which has turned a pretty mediocre pub into something brilliant. They have live magic there in the evenings, showcasing amatuers and professionals alike. I've seen some pretty remarkable stuff in there, it's still free to get in and free to watch the show (although you might have to peer over people's shoulders as its understandably popular). They also have a baby grand piano in the corner with a string of reasonably talented people operating it.

There really is no other place like this in Bristol.

The Mardyke, Bristol

Where else can you buy 3 pints of cider and get change from a fiver? As to be expected with this paper thin profit-margin, it's heaving and could do with a quick scrub. Surprising mix of customers, from old men in suits and poppies, to big lads in football shirts, to students spending their soap money on beer. Pretty good and friendly.

The Llandoger, Bristol

Uninspiring and lacks anything to make it stand out from other, similar, pubs in the area. Given it's history, it should be good, but isn't.

The Hatchet Inn, Bristol

Went in for a late drink at the weekend and found a good mix of people downstairs. Upstairs with the pool tables was a bit aggressive, but what do you expect from a pub in the town centre late at the weekend?

The Bristol Fringe Cafe Bar, Bristol

Been a couple of times recently and it's not too bad. Not great, but not too bad. Standard range of beers, standard Clifton prices. They do have Sky Sports, unlike most of the other pubs in the area, so worth bearing in mind.

The Full Moon and Eclipse, Bristol

Went about 6 months ago and the Full Moon (the big one) was closed and only open when hired out (although it sounds like this might have changed). The Eclipse was one of the grottiest shitbins I've ever ventured into. Conversely, the staff were amongst the friendliest I've spoken to in Bristol and the other customers (looked more like hooligans than Goths) were equally friendly. Surprisingly good. Very surprisingly good.

The Famous Royal Navy Volunteer, Bristol

Reasonable pub, good range of unfamilar beers/lagers/ciders, so not sure which brewery owns this place now. Best described as family-friendly owing to a lack of chacter in other areas. Give it a go if you like that 'middle-of-the-road' feel.

Crown, Bristol

Not the prettiest of pubs, but the staff were friendly. Went in looking for a pint, they sold me one. No complaints.

The Jersey Lilly, Bristol

Used to be awesome when it was run by the previous landlord. Inches Stonehouse on tap, a knavish landlord and a lax attitude to chucking-out time combined to make it one of the best on Whiteladies Road. Sadly, the brewery decided to tart it up into a souless, Chav-looking bar - presumably to be more in keeping with the rest of the overpriced, pink shirt-filled dross along the rest of the road. To be fair, it has improved since it reopened and they do run a Steak night on a Thursday (2.99). The final turd in the casserole is their total non-smoking policy though. Come on - it's not July yet!

The Cat and Wheel, Bristol

Walked past this place many a time thinking 'That looks like a bit of a shitbin'. Went in and was vindicated. To be fair, the cider was pretty reasonable and it was friendlier than it first appeared, so it's got the basics right. I'm by no means a fussy man, but even I'm not adversed to the *occasional* scrub down with a bit of soap.

The Albert Inn, Totnes

Quite frankly, one of the best pubs I've ever had the pleasure of visiting. Excellent Guinness, the friendliest and most interesting bar staff I have ever met, an atmosphere that is both welcoming and local and, mercifully, not a tie-dyed T-shirt or flip-flop in sight. Beer garden out the back overlooks the neighbours' gardens, which is a bit odd. It does allow you to sit in the garden and drink beer though, which ultimately is its purpose.

The Bridge Inn, Bristol

Wandered once by accident and honestly think this might be the best pub in Bristol. Small, friendly, well-kept and the barman actually had conversations with the customers and popped back when he could see my glass getting empty. Simply haven't seen another pub like this for years - keep up the the good work!

The Blackboy Inn, Bristol

Good pub, less pretentious than most of the other pubs on Whiteladies and consequently a lot better. Staff and customers are generally friendly, varied and interesting. Take a look when you're tired of brushed chrome and pink shirts.

The Bell Inn, Bristol

A tasty selection of beers, friendly staff and they even put my peanuts in a bowl for me. Dark and quiet - a bit like a library, but I dare say it livens up later in the evening. Well worth a visit.

The Bay Horse, Bristol

Been a few times now, largely because it's conveniently the closest pub to the Odeon. Not bad, not great. Convenient is probably the best name for it. Friendly staff though.

The Barley Mow, Bristol

Recollections are a little hazy, but I remember 'rough' cider in a pint glass with windows and a handle. Not often you get those any more. Pub seemed a little rough-and-ready, but not unpleasant. Worth a trip if you're not afraid of strong cider.

26 Mar 2007 13:43

The Adam and Eve, Bristol

Pretty good ciders and pretty good food. I vaguely remember a fair range of board games and the like, if conversation is a bit much for you.

Roo Bar, Clifton

Just another Aussie chain pub. Unremarkable and uninspiring. They do run an excellent quiz on a Sunday night (while the students are around) with a 100 cash prize. They even chuck in some bar snacks for you too.

Bar Humbug, Bristol

One there once and liked it, went there again and hated it. Food was pretty dire and overpriced. Beer was reasonable and overpriced. Reminds me of a school canteen. With a bar.

21 Jul 2006 13:58

The Bristol Ram, Bristol

Full of fat businessmen at lunchtime. Beer was very good, but pretty expensive. Tailored to rich, sweaty men in ties with red faces leering at the barmaids. Catch it when it's quieter and it is excellent though.

21 Jul 2006 13:56

The Three Tuns, Hotwells

Seems like it might be a bit rough, but was good and friendly when I was there. Guiness was reasonable and it makes a nice change from the numpty bars in Clifton. The missus was scared though, so probably not going to be back for a while.

21 Jul 2006 13:54

The Bag O' Nails, Bristol

Stopped in on a pubcrawl. Beer was pretty good, but the place is a bit of a shitbin. The missus hated it.

21 Jul 2006 13:50

The White Hart Inn, Bristol

Really nice real ale pub. Patrons seemed quite friendly and the beer was excellent.

21 Jul 2006 13:48

The Artichoke, Bristol

An alright pub. Usually shut whenever I'm passing though. A couple of steps up from a Weatherspoons.

21 Jul 2006 13:45

The King's Arms, Bristol

This is now called Startk Bar and is a bit trendy. They had a poker league running there on a Tuesday night for a while, but I haven't seen it running lately. The beer is good but a bit pricey, the cider is pretty rubbish. They show artsy films there sometimes too. If you're a bit pretentious, you'll really like it here.

21 Jul 2006 13:43

Alibi, Bristol

Trendy bar. Not bad if you like trendy bars. I don't.

21 Jul 2006 12:43

The Beaufort Arms, Clifton

Nice little pub and very friendly. Three or four draught ciders and several bottled varieties. Not going to be everyone's cup of tea, as someone suggested it was a place 'people went to die'. Feels more like a cider house than a pub, but wooden teeth are entirely optional. Pool table is in good condition. Well worth a visit.

22 Feb 2006 17:12

The Highbury Vaults, Bristol

Nice little pub, good selection of beers. Bar Billiards table has not been there during my last few visits, although they might hide it away at weekend evenings. Nice partially covered beer garden. Gets very crowded in the evenings.

22 Feb 2006 16:54

The Old Fire House, Exeter

I haven't been for a couple of years now, but this used to be a superb little pub. Reasonable prices on a good range of beers and very reasonably priced food. The staff were always friendly as were the customers. Sometimes got a little too crowded, but with a pub like this it ought to be expected. Only criticsm would be that it didn't used to open on Sundays.

22 Feb 2006 16:50

The Locomotive Inn, Exeter

Used to live opposite this place and only went in a handful of times. Plenty of good cider, but this has to balanced with the number of middle-aged women lying vomiting in the road outside it.

22 Feb 2006 16:34

The Kings Arms, Bristol

Pleasant enough pub, all the better for being slightly hidden away. Pool table and darts board are still there and the pool table is free on one of the mid-week days. Feels a little too big for its atmosphere sometimes, but well worth a visit.

22 Feb 2006 16:18

The White Bear, Bristol

Too unclean for even my (unhygienic) tastes. A shame really as Id heard good things about the place. Quiz on a Sunday night, although it was cancelled due to lack of interest last time I tried to go. Bar staff seem friendly and the gravity-fed Black Rat cider is worth a mention. Pool table has seen better days. Unfortunately cant really recommend this place as there are far nicer pubs very nearby.
