Yes - let's get Fuller's out of London and Shepherd Neame out of Kent, too.
17 Feb 2020 11:44
St Austell Brewery is thriving - buying Bath Ales as few years ago, and recently investing millions in its brewing and bottling plants.
It produces excellent cider also, and has a link up with a large cider farm - near Truro.
Beers are excellent - with bottles sold through the UK, via M&S. We need more of these regional breweries, not less.
16 Feb 2020 14:02
Whyte Harte Hotel, Bletchingley
Reopening soon - under new management - their website says.
15 Feb 2020 13:36
Even though your animal may be hygienic and midget like, even talented - rules at the excellent Hood must be adhered to.
Many pubs insist - quite rightly, I think - that only paying human customers be allowed to enter their establishments.
As animals are unaware that their hairs often detach - and they have a natural tendency to slobber, as well as barking during football matches.
4 Feb 2020 08:39
Now reopened after major refurbishment. Looks good - on the A25, between Guildford and Dorking. Predominantly a food pub.
5 Jan 2020 09:53
Badly damaged by fire; cause uncertain; nobody hurt.
Greene King to decide what next - closed for now.
31 Dec 2019 12:17
Significantly you post (again) about a pub you were never in. Unlike me and the other poster vic, and srump - who also sadly commented (initially) on this reasonable establishment, when he hadn't visited it either!
24 Dec 2019 16:26
Trading rather nicely now. After some open/closed type confusions.
24 Dec 2019 16:04
This pub was successfully converted to a veterinary surgery, a decade ago.
And the only customers served there nowadays (mostly) have 4 legs.
Consequently the place is no longer included in any good/bad beer guides.
5 Dec 2019 18:07
The Glan Aber Hotel, Betws-y-Coed
Mentioning 5 pubs in a post (4 not on here), accusing the customers of the one that is, of drug taking - and recommending one of the 4 unknown hostelries, for reasons unknown - all makes for a very unusual/mallard like posting!
18 Nov 2019 17:48
Getting served - in the correct order - is a big problem here.
The L shaped bar (where most of one side can't be seen from the other) doesn't help.
Can become very busy at weekends/evenings - when the serving order becomes virtually random.
18 Nov 2019 08:23
The New House At Home, Bradford
Shut for well over a decade. Why keep telling us that long non-functional public houses are closed - and already posted as such, many times?
17 Nov 2019 17:39
The Grasshopper Inn, Moorhouse
'Open again later in the year' - will not happen! The renovation/refurbished work has ground to a halt, and the building is now in a sorry state. Reopening would need considerable funding, for this closed/former pub - in a rural location.
17 Nov 2019 11:11
The Spotted Dog, Willesden Green
The Dog closed (as posted on here, more than once) 12 and a half years ago!
15 Nov 2019 09:16
Best pub in central Banbury. Well managed, pleasant staff and a historic ambience. Food and beer are top class also - with free wi-fi.
6 Nov 2019 15:11
Joules Cocktails and Wine Bar - as this place is now called - continues to be very popular, opening late five nights a week.
It has a niteclub atmosphere, and is where the young locals congregate - after the other drinking establishments close.
10 Oct 2019 13:36
Stopped being a pub, over 8 years ago. Has been trading as a wine bar called Platform 5.
10 Oct 2019 09:49
I share a flat or a name with nobody. Just dislike posters telling us that a pub is now a synagogue, or whatever - when it's posted on here as closed, years ago (often 10+). Usually more than once! The snarling lady is the worst offender.
7 Oct 2019 17:49
Maybe you should join a history site. What a building that was used as a pub - decades ago and is now demolished, flats, a Tesco or an abattoir - is now, is of little interest to most.
7 Oct 2019 17:20
The After Office Hours, Barnet
It's about 10 years since this pub stopped trading, and closed.
6 Oct 2019 15:04
The Sir Humphrey Davy, Penzance
Yes, this pub has been closed for several years - as posted here., a few times.
15 Aug 2019 17:50
The Yew Tree 'Time well spent', Reigate Hill
The new landlord has unusual views - and signage - about the pub's altered parking arrangements!
14 Aug 2019 17:35
The Crown Liquor Saloon, Belfast
Probably the finest example - in the UK - of an immaculately kept public house, of a bygone era. Owned and looked after by the National Trust.
Gas lit, with snugs, mirrors - and an old world atmosphere. An unmissable place, when in Belfast.
13 Aug 2019 16:15
As the snarling lady frequently says/types - 'still closed' after over a decade. Now a shop (don't know the name!).
12 Aug 2019 17:32
Only pub in the Redhill area with all the TV sport - on 3 large screens. Town centre location, with small beer garden, and excellent Thai food. Close to station - with efficient and friendly staff.
12 Aug 2019 16:54
Stop your childish name calling, and post only about pubs that actually exist!
26 May 2019 08:29
Dire place, avoided by locals. Transient, loud and untrained staff.
Prices vary dramatically - watch your change too!
Sad really, it has the ideal town spot.
Management is invisible and ineffective.
22 Apr 2019 17:11
The landlady is rarely there these days - and consequently, a very mediocre compliment of staff serve somewhat haphazardly.
Service is slow and frequently out of turn. Could do a lot better, with a pleasant beer garden not being utilised to its potential.
22 Apr 2019 14:42
The Duke of Devonshire, Eastbourne
Mediocre town centre pub, with little to offer. Low calibre staff and average beer and food.
18 Apr 2019 19:04
49 - the last few posters wouldn't agree, as you seem to suggest!
16 Apr 2019 18:05
Yes I would l - but not eight years after a pub was closed, and posted as such.
Why tell us again, and that it's now a kebab shop - or whatever!?
12 Apr 2019 23:22
This site is about trading pubs, their beers and character. Not ones that have been replaced/rebuilt as something else - or demolished.
12 Apr 2019 12:42
Awful place, and badly run. This place has changed hands, more often than my feet.
Different owners/pubcos, with no brains.
With a market outside the door, most days.
Needs investment - and who would do that?
The busiest Wetherspoon in Surrey is 300 yards away...
5 Oct 2016 21:30
Bored staff - albeit with good pub food and ale.
But - don't they (staff) love to chat between themselves!
Very similar to a staff canteen, at times.
26 Aug 2016 22:19
Don't know where you've been, y123 - but this place has been closed for some time!
14 Aug 2016 15:57
Agree, well managed pub.
Sadly a very loud bloke comes in - after we leave work (sometimes, with a whimpering dog) and tries to takes over.
Food is the best in Reigate, and the ale is close!
2 Aug 2016 22:57
Often, when walking into this very small central town pub - you are met with a visually shocked staff member.
A barman/woman who awaits the shift end/start, so there is no greeting.
Joe was good, Ollie has had a personality bypass.
The landlady has lost interest. Food (burgers) are good, as are the beers - but, without a major direction change, the future is bleak...
2 Aug 2016 22:30
Silly comments before.
This is the busiest pub in about 25 miles! Good food/beer, busy, efficient - and in Epsom centre.
Have us residents made the wrong choice/decision?
'eye shud coco'
27 May 2016 22:54
The Blue Ball, Walton On The Hill
Now reopened as part of the Whiting and Hammond pub group - and refurbished to a very high standard. Lovely beer garden, well kept beer and good food.
27 May 2016 12:59
Low quality pub - particularly the customers, who seem to scurry between it and the much better Wetherspoon across the road.
Avoid, far too many rednecks and shouting.
3 May 2016 16:21
Fully agree as a regular in the Well.
Why should anyone dictate (or try to) what beverages are sold, in any establishment?
McDonalds should sell kebabs? No, because they choose not to...
22 Apr 2016 22:34
Good/friendly governor, a Crystal Palace fan - hence the pub's claret and blue colours. Music and TV sport feature, and there is a pleasant relaxed atmosphere.
Beer quality is excellent and food seems to be planned soon. It is clear that this relatively new governor is making the effort, as the pub is now one of Redhill's best.
18 Apr 2016 15:33
tube posts that this pub is closed!
two years after the fact was posted here...odd...
4 Apr 2016 13:17
The William Web Ellis, Twickenham
Absolute disgrace ELP? No, just a normal business practice.
Like hotels and other businesses in the area.
15 Mar 2016 14:06
This lack of common sense (only putting an 'out of order' sign on the actual door of a malfunctioning toilet - often obscurely located on a different floor) is annoying and frequently occurs in Wetherspoons.
People have to make pointless treks - because of the sheer ineptitude of management. Unspecified/closed toilets are a frequent occurrence here at the Shelley.
6 Oct 2015 16:27
There's a little chap called Charlie who drinks here - and loves to hear himself heard.
28 Sep 2015 21:47
Pub is closed for about 16 months now, as mentioned on here. Why post about it?
11 May 2014 08:05
Sadly Ghost - you are too late, although you did apologize.
Today, the idiot who almost brought this pub down has been convicted. Bringing his mother with him to the court! Its in the media today.
For a while, this fine pub had to close.
His comments were fictitious rubbish - but showed how many can be easily duped.
Particularly, when our forces are erroneously brought into a sad scheme...
25 Apr 2014 21:34
Guinness here is top class - and the pub is one of the best around. Friendly staff, good food and the Irish Times.
25 Apr 2014 10:31
In there today, not impressed. Bit like a club for the heavily tattooed governor's mates. Think he's doing his best - but will have to do better.
22 Apr 2014 23:40
The Moon Under Water, Colindale
10 posts now from mac - all moaning about the Colindale Moon. And giving advice!
If you hate the place so much, why bother going in?
10 Feb 2014 13:34
Fine around pub. Good to see that old slerpy has stopped his 50+ post campaign. He, thankfully, remains busy down Dulwich way where his zimmer-frame was impounded again.
3 Feb 2014 12:28
The Old House At Home, Dorking
OLD HOUSE At Dorking - is now the name over the door. And I can fully endorse the views of the previous two posters.
A pub that had lost its way has now become a gem. Best in the area, by far.
31 Jan 2014 13:23
London's worst pub, perhaps - under every heading. Hygiene, staff, food and beer quality; all awful. The owners know that because of its proximity to Victoria Station, people will accept lower standards. Needs a visit from Health and Safety people, soon.
The 2+ rating is far too high; -2 would be generous.
30 Jan 2014 11:13
Slerpy - you're still free! We thought you'd been done for tax evasion again, on those houses you 'inherited' in Dulwich.
Is it true that every time you bend your elbow, your mouth opens?
29 Jan 2014 12:15
The Lord John Russell, Russell Square
78, this is my local and, if you look at past reviews - you will see your view is a minority one. WC1 pubs can't afford to cater for people sipping a drink all night. Do that at home.
19 Dec 2013 23:34
Too right tempest. Your last sentence accurately describes the OAP's recent contributions. Steve P should really concentrate on Croydon - where he is a well known (and avoided) bore.
19 Dec 2013 21:16
This pub has turned itself around - and has one of the finest beer gardens in Surrey, overlooking Priory Park cricket ground. Beautiful in the summer - and the food is great too.
About 400 yards west ot the old Town Hall, on the A25. Top class beer and friendly service.
But everytime we call in, after work in the area - a woman (with her posse) virtually changes her baby's nappy on the bar. When all we need is a quiet pint, and go back to do these chores at home.
This lady also tries to utilise the staff and customers as proxy child-minders, on her arrival with a few male mates about 5pm; well timed!
Maybe we should go to the Red Cross up the road, although the sad/uncouth episode has often been repeated there by the same individuals................
21 Nov 2013 21:40
Perhaps your brain?
This is a lovely pub.
In a magic area.
14 Nov 2013 22:16
The place IS thriving - selling food and drink from 8am to 11pm; drink to an even later hour. I'm sure JDW will be greatful for your advice, but with a 250% increase in share price over the last 5 years, about 50% a year, they know what they're doing!
Prices vary on a successful formulaic basis from region to region - based on the cost of stock, transportation and overheads. Your assumptions on pricing are random and inaccurate; for example, you are unaware whether the premises is occupied as a freehold, leasehold or otherwise.
BTW, the premises was not a carpet warehouse and there is no JDW in Dorking. And Corals may just have someting to say about your plans to 'knock-through - JDW, also, would certainly be unlikely to alter the busiest pub in East Surrey.
24 Oct 2013 15:49
The Live and Let Live, Guildford
Steve P/slerpy/retired old chap/Sanderstead - a well known bigot who is avoided by all rational, and those not so, pub drinkers around Croydon.
23 Aug 2013 22:59
A fine pub. Was Slerpy drinking Greensands from the Yoevil brewery? That's what he calls them!
21 Aug 2013 22:35
We know you're getting on a bit now, slerp. But why do you have to insult so many fellow posters. All morons?
1 Aug 2013 10:55
Yes 'loooooooooooooooo' is just a lazy local idiot who flits from one Sutton pub to another and looks down on road sweepers - those of us (unlike him) who work.
30 May 2013 13:58
Dragon66 - there is no need to type twice to make your point, and your spelling needs some attention.
As wealdman says, NO Wetherspoon pub has a pool table.
Or karaoke!
Or a juke box. Or a dart board.
25 May 2013 22:01
Well AL - we hope you've gone back up north, and don't turn up this lunchtime. But, tell us when you're down again - so that we can be elsewhere......
24 Mar 2013 11:10
Your comments were deleted because of your habit of making four posts at a time - but you seem to have learned your lesson! Both vic and I will avoid the Oak this weekend.
22 Mar 2013 12:43
Only local pub with Sky Sport and, with the demise of the Dog and Duck (fire) - the place has become quiet busy again. Proximity to train and bus station helps.
19 Feb 2013 09:00
Closed, permanently; the property will be converted soon into 3 flats.
Sad, after nearly 200 years.
It was a good old style pub; but, then, there are few of these left, these days.
25 Jan 2013 22:57
Agree with weald. The problems are clear - no atmosphere, no trained staff and too expensive. Reflected by the BITE rating of 3, about the same as before the c£2m outlay.
23 Jan 2013 11:55
Re-opening as The Market Stores on Monday, 17th September. Fullers appear to be doing a major refrurb.
3 Sep 2012 10:52
Yes, I have numpi. The food was Sunday lunchtime (hic). You don't say anything about the place though; on the fence, like topdog, drinker and 1959?
13 Aug 2012 12:19
Topdog (1959?), another newly joined BITE member - here to put down the Jolly! Clearly, a conspiracy is starting....
I know nothing about the Jolly's history and care less. Neither do my friends, most new regulars at this well run venue. New posters (and 'dinker' - who barely posts about anywhere else) obviously have a second agenda.
Positve posts are greeted with accusations of being employed by the Healys (whoever they might be); the overall rating of 6/7 is accurate.
13 Aug 2012 11:42
Well, I don't know the healys! However, I see that drinker again makes the Cask Marque point and again has a pop at Colin. As usual, we had a most pleasant experience in the Jolly on Saturday night - good food and beer. As mentioned before, bias (and an inability to see/accept the views of others) appears rampant in Weybridge.
13 Aug 2012 08:57
All the staff here have had personality bypasses; the pub is mediocre at best.
12 Aug 2012 20:47
The pub is showing the refurb on facebook - the-market reigate, I think. Looks pretty major and going well.
12 Aug 2012 19:38
Well run Wetherspoon which I visit on some weekday nights; usually, a friendly staff is on duty and the pub is very handy for transport links. Beer and food are of a good standard, with a bookies next door.
2 Aug 2012 10:56
boy - why come on a pubsite and say nothing (which is not to be repeated!)
??
1 Aug 2012 21:57
Was in on Sunday (this morning) for a pre-opening reception for friends/regulars; the place is looking well, with the olde world character retained after the refurbishment. A Youngs/Wells brewery chapie told me the the louts will not be tolerated on re-opening and a firmer management style will be in evidence; this is, indeed, good news.
12 Dec 2010 12:17
No, not dodgy. The RS is nothing special; its barely adequate. But it does stand out on price. A double spirit and mixer is over 6 - more than the Grand Hotel. On Preston Street alone, there are many better and cheaper pubs.
7 Oct 2010 11:22
Well Matt.....I had duck too. Ain't that strange ....you run a very average pub ....beer/food wise. But don't lie.
30 Jul 2009 20:12
The worst bar staff around. No interest whatsoever!
Walked in the other day; the barman saw me as he watched the cricket. Even though it was not a critical time in the game, he continued to watch for over three minutes; then he looked at me as if I was an intrusion.
He then served me. The ONLY thing he said to me was the price of the drink; I will not intrude again.
21 Jul 2009 11:40
The last post is a rare positive one for this former gem - and an inacurate one. Very poor management has been a feature of the Dolphin for a few years now; the low service and beer/food quality has been well described in many previous posts. But, if you like foulmouthed banter, come here and sit at the front table; you won't find many Betchworth people there as we have voted with our feet.........to the two fine Brockham pubs and the Red Lion.
20 Jul 2009 13:08
Double vodka and orange here is 6.10. The exact same drink at the Chequers across the road (a much better pub) is 3.50. We will not be returning.
12 Jul 2009 13:15
This excuse for a pub is now the subject of more negative comment in the forums! A 3.5 rating is far too generous. Staff and beer are disgusting.
20 Jun 2009 10:31
Although this is my first post, I (a Croydon resident/drinker) have been dipping into BITE for some time and have been helped by slerpy's frequent and pragmatic advice on local (and other) hostelries.
The post of arctral - 6 June - should go down in BITE folklore; arctral says that slerpy -
- is a well known troll
- posts under various names
- has bad punctuation
- lives in Surrey; parents in Dorking
- all his reviews are on pubs bewteen Surrey and Dorking
- has never been to the Eagle
- should be ignored
None of this is correct; slerpy is an infomative, helpful and pragmatic poster/reviewer.
One has to wonder (but suspects!) what arctral is.....
8 Jun 2009 11:27
Hammer and Pincers, Widnes
Assailant/murderer found guilty today.
Of killing/stabbing the longterm landlord 21 times.
The amiable manager had been in the pub, for 16 years.
20 Feb 2020 17:37
