Canterbury Inn, Newtown

Not half as bad as you might expect... in fact it's got some good points, like cheap but decent GK IPA and some good food offers on selected evenings. Pleasant enough staff, but not a welcoming interior.

The Monument Public House, Newbury

I sometimes come here to watch bands perform at weekends (The Straw Dogs are particularly good!). It's a good crowd, but the place is a bit second rate. The beer is always slightly disappointing and over-priced, but this seems to be a common issue in Newbury town centre.

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury

Nice location, but over-priced beer, in poor condition, served by unfriendly staff. Avoid.

The Boyne Arms, Burwarton

Nice enough place with a pleasant courtyard out the back. The Hobson's Twisted Spire is always in good form and they do a very good lunchtime meal deal.

The Talbot Hotel, Cleobury Mortimer

Not my sort of place, to be honest... GK IPA was on the turn when I went in recently. Maybe OK if you drink lager? Nice building in the centre of town though.

The Kings Arms Hotel, Cleobury Mortimer

Really nice, welcoming pub... nicest place in the town, with an excellent selection of the local Hobson's ales.

Blount Arms, Cleobury Mortimer

Pretty good place with decent beers and home-cooked food.

The Kremlin Inn, Ludlow

I can't believe there's been no reviews of this place for over two years. The beer is top notch, currently Hobsons (a local brewery) Best, Hobsons Mild and a regular guest beer. Owned and run by a friendly couple, Alan and Sue, who also serve excellent homemade food. As already mentioned, Shropshire's highest pub, so fantastic views. Very good quiz night on the first Wednesday of each month in aid of the Air Ambulance.

The Church Inn, Ludlow

Number 2 rated pub on this website... no way! Yes, it's the best pub in Ludlow, but that's not too difficult. It's distinctly average and the food is on the poor side (especially those very disappointing pies). Pubs close to (but outside) Ludlow are, however, truly excellent for the most part. Sorry, but this is an insult to many, many fantastic pubs elsewhere. By coincidence the current number 1 rated pub (The Plough at Little London) used to be known to me before I moved to Ludlow - now that is a great place, so the ratings system kind of works (sometimes). I'm giving The Church Inn 6/10

The Malt Shovel, Barston

I've also been here a few times and I don't think it's really a pub, probably now beyond a gastro-pub and more like a restaurant; nevertheless, I've always found it to be an excellent place to eat. The rather high prices - certainly for this area, at least - mean that I don't come here too often, but save it for special occasions. It's always been fairly busy when I've visited. 7/10

Tipperary Inn, Honiley

I've been here a few times and have always enjoyed these visits. It can be off-puttingly quiet at times, but the beer is always pretty good. The staff are all quite friendly (it appears to be family-run) and the food is better than average. A good place to start a circular walk (can take in Kenilworth Castle), so I can't work out why it's not more popular. 7/10

The Boat Inn, Catherine De Barnes

I've always enjoyed my many visits to The Boat. OK, so it's a Chef & Brewer but it's better than most others and I've always enjoyed what I've had there. It's a quite impressive old building (a former coaching Inn?) staffed by friendly and helpful people in my experience. Although they obviously concentrate on the food side of the business, there are plenty of places to enjoy a drink. Can't remember what I drank during my last visit (London Pride?) but I remember enjoying it. 8/10

Bear Inn, Berkswell

Like the previous reviewer, I don't find the negative reviews typical of my many visits to The Bear. As an almost local (actually Meriden, the next village) I visit here for a meal maybe every few weeks or so and, yes, it's not fantastic but it's usually pretty good and always great value for money - typical Chef & Brewer fare, really. I've only had to complain about my meal once in about twenty plus visits and the offending meal was replaced without question. The biggest problem is the shortage of serving staff, they're hard-working and friendly but can be difficult to get hold of for extra drinks or to even to get the bill. It's a great old building in a lovely rural location with lots of interesting nooks and crannys and does a good pint of London Pride. More for eating in than drinking in though. 7/10

Queens Head, Coventry

I really like this place, but not sure why! Guest beers are regularly updated and are always in good condition. Usually fairly busy but no problem getting served. This pub is in a great location for walking and a board opposite the entrance shows a few circular routes; the Heart of England Way and the Coventry Way both go right past. We've never eaten here (as the the menu is a bit basic) but upstairs, served by a separate entrance, is an excellent Thai restaurant where the drinks orders are served from the QH bar below. 8/10

Bulls Head, Meriden

Interesting looking building with a nice courtyard and - like most places in this area - the beer comes at a reasonable cost (last time I was here I had a rather nice pint of Landlord). However, the interior is a bit disjointed and out of keeping with the exterior and they do appear to want to appeal more to diners rather than drinkers. Sunday lunch is available pretty much all afternoon but, in general, the food can be good, but more often is average. 7/10

George and Dragon, Sutton Courtenay

I've been meeting up with friends here for a while now, usually once a month. The Morland Original last week was excellent and the usual solitary barmaid was her normal helpful, friendly and efficient self. We always have a meal here, but there has been a noticeable decline in both the choice and the standard during our last three visits. 7/10

The Sun Inn, Welwyn Garden City

I often come here after work. The London Pride is usually quite pleasant, but the staff can be a little off-hand. I've never experienced any trouble here, but then I normally visit early evenings during the week. The food is surprisingly good. 7/10

The Speckled Hen, St Albans

Not a particular interesting place, but the beer is OK. For me, the main redeeming feature is the brilliant and well-run pop quiz every Thursday night (which even makes up for the sometimes surly bar staff). 6/10

The Pineapple, Brimpton Common

Great to see this place re-opened. Lovely old building with low ceilings and interesting layout. Good range of beers, but the menu was a little limited on my last visit during April (and then the only meal I wanted was unavailable!). 7/10

18 May 2010 13:12

The Green Man, Sandridge

I often come here for a pint or two after work - the Black Sheep is a particular favourite of mine and is always in good condition. Friendly enough manager/landlord and regulars. Nice selection of ciders available on my last visit. Can't comment on the food. 7/10

18 May 2010 13:07

The Plough Inn, Shustoke

I visit The Plough now and again, usually to have a meal - the bar staff are friendly and helpful. As mentioned previously, the Black Sheep is excellent, as is the Banks's. The food is above average, fairly priced, and I can recommend the homemade steak pie. 7/10
