Regular long time pub-goer, now based in the Ludlow / South Shropshire area who much prefers to drink bitter in traditional old pubs. I've nothing against gastro-pubs (I actually quite like them) unless the food side of the business takes over and squeezes out the drinkers.

The Monument Public House, Newbury
I sometimes come here to watch bands perform at weekends (The Straw Dogs are particularly good!). It's a good crowd, but the place is a bit second rate. The beer is always slightly disappointing and over-priced, but this seems to be a common issue in Newbury town centre.

The Lock Stock and Barrel, Newbury
Nice location, but over-priced beer, in poor condition, served by unfriendly staff. Avoid.

Canterbury Inn, Newtown
Not half as bad as you might expect... in fact it's got some good points, like cheap but decent GK IPA and some good food offers on selected evenings. Pleasant enough staff, but not a welcoming interior.
